Lionel Messi Gives MLS Its Best Chance At Becoming One Of The Top Leagues In The World

There’s a Major League Soccer stadium about 15 minutes away from where I live. It’s quite nice, a very comfortable stadium with modern amenities that opened in 2021 and gets filled up for games in the heart of downtown. That stadium is about 10 minutes away from an older stadium, the total dump that used to house the team in an emptier area near the state fairgrounds. That building is a cathedral of American soccer, the first soccer-specific stadium built by an MLS club and site of some of the most well-known performances in the history of the United States men’s national team.

The fact that the team plays in the nice new stadium is, legitimately, one of the most remarkable stories in American sports. A longer read on it is right here but the extreme CliffNotes version: The old owner of the team really wanted to move the club to Texas if he couldn’t get a shiny new downtown stadium, the city and state were really not into the idea of the team moving, the fans were R E A L L Y not into the idea of the team moving, and eventually, through sheer force of will, the fans were able to get a group of investors to buy the club and put up most of the money for the new building.

It is the sort of fairytale story of the power of fandom that should be the biggest sports story in the entire country. Unless you are really in-tune with the goings on in MLS, there’s a decent chance this is the first time you’ve really been made aware of the details of the whole thing.

This story popped into my head, weirdly enough, when it became clear that Lionel Messi is going to play for Inter Miami, one of the newest clubs in MLS and a side whose efforts to lure the greatest player to ever live have gone on for years. MLS is a league that has aspirations of being the one of the best in the world. Despite the fact that its first season happened in 1996 and it’s playing catch-up on leagues that are far more established, MLS wants to be the kind of place that attracts talent to the United States and becomes one of the top leagues on the planet.

For as much as American sports fans like to say they love good stories — the underdog teams, the players that punch above their weight, the examples of fans rallying together to showcase what happens when a community is more powerful than one craven rich dude — the average person wants to watch the best athletes perform a sport at the highest level. Many believe “American” is synonymous with “best,” no matter how many bits of evidence we have that this is not the case.

One of the places where that is generally true is in the world of sports. The NBA, NHL, MLB, and WNBA are all leagues that primarily exist in the United States, while the NFL is the most uniquely American thing that we have. All of them are the best versions of their sports in the world. This applies to college athletics, as well, and in the world of soccer, the United States has the best and most successful women’s team on the planet. How, then, could Major League Soccer — a good league, but one that is generously the 10th-12th best in the world — stand any chance of breaking through in its own backyard?

For the hardcore soccer fan in the United States, it’s been through the league’s rock solid efforts to develop young talent that can play at the highest levels of the sport, whether that comes through the league’s academies, a la Leeds United midfielder Tyler Adams, or by purchasing promising youngsters from South America, developing them, and flipping them to European clubs for quite the profit, a la Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron. For the more casual observer of sports, the path is, and has been, through stars. Over the years, MLS has tried to do a delicate balancing act, as it does not want to have the label of being a retirement league while simultaneously understanding that it’s never getting Kylian Mbappe in his prime to come over here.

The league has seen Carlos Valderrama, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, David Villa, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo, Bastian Schweinsteiger, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all come through its doors. Just last year, Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini both joined Los Angeles Football Club and helped them win MLS Cup. They’re all revered players, some of the greatest of their eras, that generally came at the end of their careers. Many of them made MLS the last stop before they decided to go enjoy the next chapter in their lives.

Save for Beckham and possibly Ibrahimovic, none of them were gigantic names in the American sports consciousness by the time they came over. And in the case of Beckham, while he was a wonderful footballer and the closest thing to Messi in terms of a guy coming over while he could still get it done at a high level in Europe, he didn’t have the same level of bona fides and magnetic qualities that demanded people drop what they were doing and tune in. Essentially, if MLS got a big player, it wasn’t the sort of name that got the average person to think that they could tune in and watch someone special, and if you were a soccer fan, you knew you’d be tuning into someone whose best days are behind them.

In Messi, MLS finally got the superstar who changes every single bit of this equation. He’s not the player he was at the very height of his powers — no one in my lifetime ever will be, and no one in any lifetime that led up to this point has been — but he still has a claim to be the best player on the planet. It is very possible that, when the Ballon d’Or is given out in August, this short Argentinian who plays in MLS is going to lift it. He is, for the first time in the nearly three decade-long history of the league, the biggest star on and off the pitch, the exact player who is worthy of the lucrative, weird, complex, stakeholder-filled contract that he has reportedly received and all the attention that he generated by making this decision. The fact that he is going to a horrible team that just sacked its manager and might be on the verge of making moves that reinforce the “retirement league” thing doesn’t matter. All that matters is Messi. All that matters in the sport is Messi. And Messi is now in MLS.

All of this is to say: For how worthy of celebration all of this is for the league, it’s by no means the finish line. It’s the end of the pursuit of Messi, yes, but it’s the start of what is essentially the three-and-a-half-year sprint that will define how the league is perceived by, well, everyone. The biggest event in the sport, the World Cup, is coming to the United States as part of a joint bid with Canada and Mexico in 2026. It’s the first time the men’s version of the event has happened on American soil since 1994, an event which came under the condition that U.S. Soccer would establish a top footballing league. That happened in 1993, the first MLS game took place in 1996, and 27 years later, we’re here.

A World Cup inherently puts the top domestic league and the soccer culture in the host country under a spotlight. While the 1994 World Cup was an example of what that could be in the United States, the 2026 World Cup is going to be a check-in on what’s happened since then, and whether the aspirations of becoming a player on the world stage is reachable or, if MLS is lucky, here. Back in 2010, when the U.S. was still in the running to host the 2022 World Cup, MLS commissioner Don Garber (who is still at the helm today) had this to say.

“We have a very specific goal,” Garber said. “If we get the World Cup, we want to be one of the top leagues in the world by 2022.”

“If we get the World Cup, we have a 12-year plan,” he said. “And that’s not just by our own measure, but how we’re perceived by the rest of the world.”

Obviously, Qatar got the 2022 World Cup. But still, in 2015, Garber reiterated his belief that MLS had the chance to do something special in the not too distant future, and funny enough, he cited a comment from one of the European stars who came to the league and remarked on his experience.

“When you guys had the LA Galaxy-New York City game and Steven Gerrard came on and said it will be one of the best leagues in the world within 10 years, we didn’t feed him that,” Garber added. “Think of the soccer movement, and all that we’re doing to invest in players and facilities, and becoming a league of choice for guys like Sebastian Giovinco.

“I do believe in 10 years’ time or less, people will think of us like Serie A, La Liga, and hopefully the way they think about the Premier League. If we continue to do things right and stay to our plan.”

You never has as much time as you think, and while the World Cup is far down the road right now, MLS doesn’t have the luxury of being ultra patient in the coming years. If, in a worst-case scenario, the league cannot clear the bar it has set now, with the greatest player to ever live in tow and a World Cup coming, it’s fair to wonder if that will happen any time soon, particularly with the top leagues in Europe throwing around more money than ever.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s unclear where getting a player as great and prominent as Messi fits into that plan Garber referenced in 2015 — how important he is, when on the timeline Garber wanted this level of star to come, if he viewed it as necessary, etc. But nevertheless, Messi’s here now, the player on the planet who is most likely to single-handedly lift MLS to its goal. The World Cup that was so coveted in 2010 because of what could come as a result is on the horizon. Because of all this, the opportunity for Major League Soccer to reach the lofty heights it’s strived to reach for years is more attainable than ever, and if all goes right, the very nice stadiums like the one where I live will be packed full of fans who get to say they’re watching one of the best leagues in the world.

Tom Cruise Told Matt Damon An Intense Story About One Of His More Dangerous ‘Mission: Impossible’ Stunts

If Tom Cruise was a motivational speaker, like the role he played in Magnolia, his advice would range from “don’t be a p*ssy” to “lean into the douchebaggery of it all” to “don’t be safe, be competent.” He’s like an athlete who you love if he’s on your team, and hate if he’s anywhere else. As an enjoyer of middle-aged men performing impossibly dangerous stunts, I cherish any new Tom Cruise tale, like this one from Matt Damon.

“I remember I had dinner with him once, and it was after he did the [Mission: Impossible] where he ran around the building,” he said on Max’s SmartLess: On the Road, referring to the Burj Khalifa sequence in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. “And I go, ‘Can you tell me how that happened?’ And he’s a really intense guy, and he was like, ‘I’ll tell you how it happened!’ I go, ‘Alright.’ And I’m in.” Matt Damon has initiated Tom Cruise story protocol.

“He goes, ‘I’ve been thinking about this shot for 15 years!’ And I’m like, ‘Wow, really?’ He goes, ‘So I go to the safety guy, and I lay it all out.’ Safety guy goes, ‘We can’t do that. It’s too dangerous, you can’t do that. So I get a new safety guy.’ That’s the beginning of his story. And I just go, ‘Stop!’ That’s where we’re different. When the safety guy says no, I’m like, ‘Well, safety guy says it’s not a good idea.’”

It’s worth reiterating: thank you for your service, Tom Cruise, but you do not need to do this. Anyway, stay tuned for Mission: Impossible 8 where Ethan Hawke swims to the bottom of the ocean without a diving tank.

I’ll be there opening night.

Margot Robbie And Ryan Gosling’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel Is Expected To Be An ‘Old-Fashioned Love Story’ Inspired By Hitchcock

Now that Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is out of the way, we can focus on the real prequel everyone is looking forward to: Ocean’s Eleven’s upcoming origin story. Yes, that is happening, even if you originally thought they were kidding or forgot about it. Make no mistake: Oceans 8 is still a great movie, despite what the world wants you to think. But it’s time to get back to the basics, which now include Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the king and queen of Summer 2023.

Jay Roach, known for directing your dad’s favorite movie Austin Powers and your mom’s favorite movie Meet The Parents, is currently developing the Ocean’s prequel that’s expected to begin filming this month. Do you think Robbie and Gosling are sick of each other yet?

Though details have been sparse, Roach recently shared a bit of info about the film with AP. As previously stated, the movie will star Gosling and Robbie, and now we know it will be set in Monte Carlo in the 1960s. Filming is currently scheduled to begin in France, and AP says it will be a “glamorous” take on the original 1960s heist story starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr.

AP News writer Lindsey Bahr confirmed Roach’s vision for the movie through a series of quotes from her conversation with the director. “The Monaco Grand Prix is the backdrop and there’s a big famous shipping magnate who has a yacht. It’s not inexpensive. And I wanted it to be old fashioned,” he told Bahr in a segment from her interview. “Margot brought it to me as a kind of old-fashioned epic love story slash adventure disguised as a heist. It is a heist movie still, but it’s very much a love story. And we were both inspired by Hitchcock, To Catch a Thief but also Notorious. It just wants to be a big, big, you know, cinematic spectacle. We didn’t quite sync up yet on what the right budget for it is.” There are options to consider, like maybe funneling all of the profits from Barbie into this production, but that’s for the higher-ups to plan.

The question on everyone’s minds, of course, is if the world is even ready for that much Gosling/Robbie power after Barbie. Could we really go into another pink paint shortage in this economy?

Roach continued, “Originally there were some questions about whether it would be weird to have (Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling) together again after Barbie. But I think there’s just some pairings you want to see over and over again. It’s such a powerful, powerful duo, you know? And it’s and the suspense of will they come together; will they trust each other enough to team up? That’s romantic.” The same could be said about Barbie, but we don’t really know how that one will play out yet.

Dog gets a neighborhood send off for his last walk after terminal cancer diagnosis

Humans and dogs go together like peanut butter and jelly and any other pair cliché you can think of. We see those cute furry faces and fall in love, excusing their mischievous behaviors because they used their most powerful weapon—puppy eyes. Humans are acutely aware that the time they have with their dogs is short since a dog’s lifespan is usually 15 years or less depending on breed and size.

As they get older, we do what we can to make them more comfortable and start giving them extra treats here and there as a way to make sure they feel special while they’re here. But it’s not just the owners that get attached to family pets. If your dog is friendly, they may be well acquainted with the mailman, the coffee shop baristas or the entire neighborhood, which may make saying goodbye a little more complicated.

A dog named Mellow has been making friends around his neighborhood for several years with his human companion, and recently a note appeared in everyone’s mailboxes with a very important announcement.

Mellow was diagnosed with terminal cancer and would be put down soon. The letter was written from the perspective of the dog and included a map of his walking route.

“I have definitely slowed down throughout the years and unfortunately that is why you are receiving this letter. I was recently diagnosed with lymphoma and will be leaving for doggie heaven in June,” the note reads. “I’m not sure exactly when I will go, but each day over the past few weeks has been a struggle for me to get around the neighborhood like I am used to.”

Mellow goes on to say, “Therefore, while I still can, I will be marching around the neighborhood on Saturday June 3rd from 7-8PM and would love to say goodbye to you face-to-face if you are available.”

Letter to neighbors from Mellow

Kevin, Mellow’s human, put a special treat in the letters and provided an estimate of when the pair would arrive at certain houses. The neighborhood didn’t disappoint. They all came out to give him treats and head pats and to say their goodbyes to the neighborhood’s goodest boy. Kids made signs and drawings for Mellow, and others stopped for pictures with the sweet dog.

In the letter, Mellow mentioned that he would also miss seeing the other dogs in the neighborhood that like to come out and play with him. On his last walk, the old boy looked full of excitement as all the attention was focused on him before he headed home for a more restful few weeks.

“What a beautiful love story. May every dog know that kind of love. As for his owner…my heart breaks with you, but with joy for the great love you shared. May that joy be a comfort to you always” one commenter wrote.

“Oh boy my heart is breaking and I’ve never met you but you sure are lucky to find an amazing dad that loves you this much, I can tell you to say goodbye will be hard enough but your dad is willing to hear so many friends say goodbye as well, not an easy day my friend 😥🐕🦺,” another person said.

Mellow has now not only touched hearts around his neighborhood, but also across the internet. Take your rest, sweet Mellow. You’ve been a good boy.

J Hus And Drake’s Flavorful ‘Who Told You’ Challenges The Status Quo In Favor Of Summertime Fun

At the end of last month, UK rapper J Hus made his long-awaited return with his new single “It’s Crazy.” Prior to that, it’d been three years since he released his celebrated second album Big Conspiracy. In that time span, appearances from J Hus were far and few with the most notable coming through a feature on Burna Boy’s “Cloak & Dagger.” At this point, it’s clear that J Hus is back and ready to reach a new level as he checks back in with his new single “Who Told You” alongside no other than Drake.

“Who Told You” is a fun and flavorful record that will indeed find life in the upcoming summer months. On it, J Hus looks to challenge the status quo placed on the tough guys of the world by asking, “Who told you bad man can’t dance?” Regardless of what his life on the streets may look like, J Hus makes it clear that he can have fun just like the rest of us.

Both “It’s Crazy” and “Who Told You” are set to appear on J Hus’ upcoming third album, which is rumored to be titled Don’t Say Militancy. He explained the phrase in a post on his Instagram page. “Don’t say it, do it,” he said. “Don’t say it out loud. Unless you’re gonna do something, don’t even say, ‘I’m gonna do this if you do this’… Don’t do that.” He continued, “But, if you’re gonna do it, then do it. If not, then don’t say nothing about it. That’s what it means. Don’t say it, but do it, represent it.”

You can listen to “Who Told You” in the video above.

Twihards Had A Collective Freak-Out While Initially Confusing The Grim Pat Robertson News For Being About Robert Pattinson

Pat Robertson and Robert Pattinson are two very different people. Despite sharing the same letters in their first and last names, one is a multimillionaire evangelist who galvanized the Christian right. The other? He’s played a sparkling vampire on screen and once blew up a hotel room microwave with his pasta invention. The main difference between these two men though is that one is now dead.

Thankfully, it’s not the guy who played Batman. But that didn’t stop Twihards from having a momentary freak-out over the possibility that the hunk who once played an immortal vampire had bit the dust.

When news broke early this morning that Robertson — who once blamed gay people for 9/11 — had died at the ripe old age of 93, those quickly scrolling through Twitter confused the creator of the Christian Broadcasting Network with the Twilight actor. Again, these are not the same people. One man claimed Hurricane Katrina happened because of the abortion rate in the U.S. and that travelers could get AIDS from towels in Kenya. The other is a delightful weirdo who’s masturbated on screen a total of four times (so far) and likes to tell fake stories about dead clowns on daytime talk shows.

The world probably won’t miss one of them, but we’d be lost without the visionary who once sold “drugs” (to his friends) that ended up just being sawdust shavings with Febreze on them.

Still, now that we know all is well and Pattinson is safely tucked away living his best oddball life, let’s laugh at our momentary panic attack via these tweets.

Charli XCX Wishes Fans ‘Happy Pride’ With The News That She And Robyn Are Cooking Up Some Collaborations

Charli XCX is perpetually full of surprises. Earlier this year, she hopped on a remix of Caroline Polachek’s “Welcome To My Island,” which instantly went viral. It was revealed last month that she’ll be making her feature film debut in the Faces Of Death reboot.

Today (June 8), she divulged that she’s up to even more exciting things. “me and robyn been making songs in the studio. happy pride ;)” she wrote on Twitter.

In 2018, pop legend Robyn shared Honey, her first album in eight years. In 2020, she won the Songwriter Of The Decade NME award, which Charli was also nominated for. “There are so many good songs written by so many good songwriters over this decade,” Robyn said during her acceptance speech. “Some of them I have had the privilege to work with. Two of them are here tonight and I love them both so much. There are lots of other really talented songwriters here tonight — Christine and Charli, Taylor Swift.”

Also in 2020, V Magazine shared a conversation between Charli and Robyn. Charli said, “I’ll never forget when we were on tour in Australia together years ago…You came over to me at some party where I was feeling really nervous and you said, ‘Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks of you. We’ll have fun together, being ourselves.’”

‘The Venture Bros.’ Movie Trailer Promises Betrayal, Conspiracy, And Lots Of Things Blowing Up

The Venture Bros. — which has been called the best superhero television show of all-time (by me just now) — was notorious for its long breaks between seasons. Fans of the Adult Swim series were accustomed to waiting two or three years between new episodes, with only specials to tide them over. Sadly, The Venture Bros. was canceled in 2020, but it’s being brought back one last in the original movie, The Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart.

You can watch the trailer above.

The whole gang is here: Dr. Venture, Brock, Hank and Dean, the Monarch, Dr. Mrs. the Monarch, Billy Quizboy, my good friend H.E.L.P.eR, and 700 other characters with names I don’t remember because this show has a deep, dense lore. Forget a post-credits scene. I need a pre-movie recap. Here’s more:

The Venture Bros. are back in an all-new original movie picking up right after the events from the shocking season 7 finale! Doc’s latest invention will either bankrupt Team Venture or launch them to new heights, as Hank searches for himself, Dean searches for Hank, The Monarch searches for answers, and a mysterious woman from their pasts threatens to bring their entire world crashing down on them.

The Venture Bros.: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart (you have to say the full title every time) will be available to purchase digitally on July 21st, followed by a Blu-ray release on July 25th. Venture Bros.: The Complete Series is also coming out on digital and DVD on June 13th. Purchase it here.
