Rainn Wilson uses ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Kung Fu’ to explain the need for a ‘spiritual revolution’

If we were to ask who should write a book about the individual and collective spiritual journey of humankind, Dwight Schrute from “The Office” would likely be wayyyy down on the list.

But the actor who played Dwight Schrute is a different story.

Rainn Wilson may have gained his fame playing a quirky, cantankerously loveable paper salesman (and Assistant to the Regional Manager), but outside of “The Office,” he’s spent much of his time publicly exploring “life’s big questions.” He founded the media company SoulPancake for that very purpose, he’s gone deep with guest host Reza Aslan and fascinating guests on his “Metaphysical Milkshake” podcast, he’s now on Peacock with “Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss,” and he has shared his perspectives on life, faith and humanity through various writing and speaking venues.

So it’s perhaps not surprising to see him writing a NYT Bestseller, “Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution,” exploring how we can transform humanity for the better by focusing on the problem-solving benefits of spirituality. And since we’re on a mission to highlight books that bring out the best in humanity, it’s also no surprise that we chose Wilson and his book for our inaugural Upworthy Book Club author chat.

“My thesis is that the world needs a transformation,” Wilson says. “The way that we are doing things is wrong-headed and upside down. The way that every system works is based on the worst of humanity—it’s based on competition and aggression and one-upsmanship and survival of the fittest.” A spiritual revolution, he says, is about replacing those systems with ones based on our higher human nature, which “seeks not to be self-interested, but other-interested, that is altruistic and compassionate at heart, and seeks to create a better world and better communities.”

“So a spiritual revolution is a reimagining, a reenvisioning of how we’re going to interact with each other at a foundational level,” Wilson says. “That has to do with cooperation, community, collaboration, consultation…all of the things that bring us together, that unite us, that make us whole, that connect us. These are what I would call the ‘divine attributes’ of being a human being. This is the higher-level humanity stuff.”

The funny thing is his opening statement for this thesis isn’t necessarily what one would expect from a book about spirituality. Rather than diving into holy scriptures or the ancient wisdom of history’s great spiritual thinkers, he starts his book by talking about two iconic 1970s television shows: “Star Trek” and “Kung Fu.”

Wilson explains how the premises of these two TV shows tie into the global spiritual revolution he advocates by offering us examples of what it looks like for humanity to transform itself as a whole (“Star Trek”) and for humans to transform themselves individually (“Kung Fu”). Wilson says we all have a role to play in these two parallel spiritual paths of personal and collective transformation.

Wilson is upfront about the fact that many of the ideas he shares come directly or indirectly from the Baha’i Faith, but he pulls from a diverse range of faiths and other spiritual sources as well to make his case for a spiritual revolution. He posits that we’ve “thrown the spiritual baby out with the religious bathwater,” and that while people have tragically used religion as justification for all manner of cruelty and injustice, there are fundamental spiritual truths common to the major religions that can help us through this needed transformation. With chapters like, “The Notorious G.O.D.,” “Religion, Schmeligion,” and “The Fabulous Foundations of Faith,” Wilson fearlessly (and often hilariously) delves into ideas and understandings about spirituality and the divine in a way that respects people of all beliefs. Even atheists and agnostics will find a welcome message here, as there is room for disagreement on the details even as we focus on what unites us.

Reviews reveal that Wilson has managed the seemingly impossible—to talk about religion and spirituality in a way that unites people of various backgrounds around a common cause:

“I am NOT religious or spiritual by any stretch of the imagination. Rainn Wilson addresses the topics in his book with the precision & care as to not offend, yet enlighten all with ideas and thoughts as to how we can all work toward achieving a better culture and environment for the youth of today. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would. A must read for ANYONE with children, especially between the ages of 2 & 18 years of age. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!” – SLMSLC

“If you’d told me years ago I’d be reading a book on spirituality from Dwight from The Office I’d have called you crazy. Of course that would have been before I knew anything about Rainn Wilson other than his hilarious character from The Office. I’ve since learned about his desire to explore life’s big questions and his SoulPancake project. Right from the start of Soul Boom Rainn admits he’s not an expert in spirituality and says you may very well not agree with all he says, in fact since he is pulling lessons from quite a few different religions/spiritual belief systems, he doesn’t expect readers to agree with it all and merely encourages you to keep an open mind, take what you want from the book and leave the rest. While he repeatedly discusses his own religion, Baháʼí Faith which focuses on unity and teaching the worth of all religions, he isn’t preachy about it, doesn’t insist his is the only way, and I definitely appreciate that. He tackles serious issues but does so in an entertaining, enjoyable, and thought-provoking way.” – Amazon Customer

“Thank you Rainn Wilson for writing this book. The world seems to be on a path towards glorifying fear and division, and we need books like this to present unifying lessons and values. Service to others, loving one another and explaining the necessity of spirituality in our daily lives. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone seeking a better life, a better world, and the unity of all mankind.” – Saeedeh

“I don’t say this often, but I do think this is a “must read” in that it is part of a bigger conversation being carried out in real-time in our society (and the world), and this is “An Idiot’s Guide” to the basics of the topic. This world is…challenging. Physically, mentally, socially, and…yes…spiritually. Rainn Wilson (yes, THAT Rainn Wilson) posits the theory that perhaps spirituality (however you shape it) has the answers we need to those challenges. He seeks the solutions to what he calls the “global pandemics” of racism, materialism, climate change, unjust economic systems, nationalism, and sexism–solutions that he believes lie within us as humans, if only we can access them. This is his Spiritual Revolution. He approaches the subject as an adherent of the Baha’i faith, but demonstrates a good working knowledge of the tenants of many other of the world’s major religions. He also honestly examines from those varied perspectives some of the big questions in life, such as death, a higher power, purpose, suffering, etc. But he does it in a clever, witty, approachable way–a dry tome this is not! I can almost hear his voice reading it and I may very well get the audiobook so I can hear it for real. His prose is very expressive. What he did was make me think, about how we can individually seek inner tranquility and also collectively seek solutions and revolutionize how we live this thing called life.” – Debra

There’s Actually An Explanation For The Video Of Colleen Ballinger Supposedly Wearing Blackface And Singing Beyoncé

After facing grooming allegations and backlash to her widely derided apology video/song, Colleen Ballinger (also known by the name of her character, Miranda Sings) appeared to be facing another controversy. An old video from 2009 resurfaced, in which Ballinger sang Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” during a live show, wearing blackface-like dark makeup all the while. Things weren’t as they may have seemed, though.

A video from the same show shared by TMZ offers a different perspective. The clip includes some of the “Single Ladies” performance, as well as the song before it. In the video, Ballinger sang a song with Oliver Tompsett, star of the Wicked musical. So, she wore green makeup in order to emulate the Wicked Witch of the West character from the show. After the song, Ballinger quickly changed into her Beyoncé outfit and didn’t take the time to remove the dark makeup from her face. So, it was the fast pace of the between-songs transition that, when taken out of context, caused confusion.

As for the grooming allegations, they come from a HuffPost investigative report from June, which featured fans coming forward with “screenshots of their private communications with Ballinger to evidence claims that she ‘groomed’ them throughout their adolescence.” One fan alleged that “Ballinger would bring up sex during their conversations back when he was still 14 or 15 years old.”

What ‘Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny’ Has That ‘Crystal Skull’ Doesn’t

Over the long weekend, I received many text messages that were different iterations of, “Should I see the new Indiana Jones movie?” Having seen it three times now myself, my answer was, “Yes, you should.” The primary concern seemed to be rooted in that nobody was in the mood to sit through something even remotely like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull again. And after the initial reviews from Cannes,* It’s understandable why people might think this was the road we were headed down again.

(*For whatever reason, the Cannes crowd did not enjoy Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at a percentage that is far different than the people who saw it anywhere but at Cannes. I’ve been at festival screenings before for big movies and they can be a risky proposition. The cast is usually there, it’s exciting, no one has seen the movie before, which usually results in over-praise. Then, after, we watch the Rotten Tomatoes score slowly start coming down as the film plays outside that initial festival. Dial of Destiny has been the opposite. (I am not a fan of how we judge movies by Rotten Tomatoes scores, but it’s the way the world works.) At one point it was in the high 30s. Now it’s hovering around 70 percent. This is unusual. (I saw Dial of Destiny on June 7th, so after the initial Cannes reaction, but before the wave of good reviews came in. So for about a week I felt like the one lone person saying, “Hey this is pretty good!”)

Anyway, I also got a lot of texts, after they saw the movie, that they very much enjoyed it. Unlike Crystal Skull, it’s a satisfying adventure. (I enjoy being vindicated.) Last week I wrote about why I still can’t get on board with Crystal Skull (even though I’ve tried) and I was curious, using specific plot points from Dial of Destiny, how the latter movie avoided the mistakes that Crystal Skull made. So, yes, obviously there will be spoilers from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny going forward.

Well, okay, first of all, Archimedes’ Dial actually does something. For the life of me, I still can’t tell you what the Skull does. If you look into its eyes you zone out a bit? Then, later, it turns into a living being, frowns, then leaves. In Dial of Destiny, there’s actually a payoff! They go back to 212 BC! Whatever a complaint of Dial of Destiny might be, not having a payoff isn’t one of them. You may not like the payoff, but there’s certainly a payoff.

And also, let’s not forget Indy’s “buddy” Mac betrays him, what, three times? Why would Indiana Jones keep hanging out with this guy? The new supporting characters in Crystal Skull are all … not great. Mutt is in a different movie. As stated, Mac betrays Indiana Jones multiple times throughout the film. And Oxley just kind of mumbles the whole time. Great. In Dial of Destiny, Helena Shaw is a real character. It’s interesting she’s in it for the money (at least at first) and doesn’t want to get bogged down in morality after watching her father go mad obsessing over the Dial. Speaking of her father, Bas is also a great character who we completely understand why Indiana Jones would consider him a friend. Bas even risks his life to try to save Indy in the scene that’s set in 1944. Dial of Destiny is actually filled with great new characters.

And speaking of characters, like the Skull, I still can’t tell you what Irina Spalko’s motivation was. Something about unlocking the power of the skull? I think? What those powers are, no one seems to quite know. Now, I do know exactly what Jürgen Voller’s motivation is. What he wants to do is a pretty audacious plot point, but I have no question whatsoever what he wants to do and why he wants to do it.

My favorite line in Dial of Destiny is a severely injured Indiana Jones, half delirious, half giddy, tells Jürgen Voller, “Your calculations are wrong!” Then adds, “I don’t know where we’re going, Jürgen, but it sure as hell ain’t 1939!” (My second favorite line is Indy, annoyed, “You weren’t forced to drink the blood of Kali!” Indiana Jones is, once again, the smartest person in the room and knows what’s going on before anyone else. In Crystal Skull, Indy just looks kind of confused the whole time, like us. Finally, wrapping the whole thing up by guessing the inter-dimensional beings sought knowledge as their treasure? I mean, sure, most of us do like learning things, but that’s a disappointing ending to an Indiana Jones movie.

In Dial of Destiny, because of the loss of his son, Indy has a real emotional arc with a terrific payoff. Having seen it a few times now, director James Mangold really milks the scene where Indy says he’s staying in 212 BC. It goes on so long, the audience truly believes this is how it will end for Indiana Jones and, every time, Helena’s punch gets a roaring applause. We are led to believe Marion Ravenwood was the one who couldn’t be consoled, but the whole time it was Indiana Jones who was so overcome with grief he’d rather die in 212 BC from a gunshot than face his own reality of booze in his morning coffee followed by some day-drinking at his local pub. It’s pretty heartbreaking. But we need to feel that heartbreak to get to that perfect ending of Marion asking Indy, “I heard you were back. Are you back?” A scene so good, nothing in Crystal Skull comes remotely close and I could make a case that this is the most emotional scene out of all five movies.

Olivia Rodrigo Cried In The ‘SNL’ Dressing Room Before Her Debut Performance On The Show

Olivia Rodrigo may seem effortlessly put-together since the instant popularity of her debut album Sour. However, the star, who just announced her sophomore record Guts and released the single “Vampire,” revealed in a new interview that she’s not as unafraid as fans may think.

In a profile for Vogue, journalist Jia Tolentino shared that Rodrigo was so nervous for her Saturday Night Live performance — which was her second performance ever — that she cried in the dressing room. The story reads:

“The first time she ever performed her own songs live, it was at the BRIT Awards; the second time, it was on Saturday Night Live. She tells me that she had never been more scared in her life than she was in the dressing room, that she was literally crying from nerves. And still, that night, she crushed it — ably managing a stage whose tricky acoustics flummox veteran acts all the time. ‘She’s a professional in everything she does,’ says Carole King. ‘She’s been a professional for a long time.’”

In that same article, Rodrigo divulged a lot of unexpected details about herself, like that her first internet passion was reading Harry Styles fan fiction and her celebrity crush is actually Bruce Springsteen.

Report: Damian Lillard Would Have Been Interested In Joining The Warriors Before The Chris Paul Trade

The Damian Lillard sweepstakes continue on unabated, as Lillard wants out of Portland and prefers a move to Miami, even though the Trail Blazers don’t seem to be all that interested in whatever the Heat can put on the table without bringing in another team. As such, reports indicate that Portland’s front office is willing to look around and see if what they can get from other teams.

It stands to reason that the Golden State Warriors aren’t able to get in on the Lillard sweepstakes, as the team already pulled off a big deal this summer by acquiring Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards for Jordan Poole. But apparently, if they waited to make a Poole trade, Lillard would have been very interested in heading to the Warriors, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.

“They had another choice: They could have waited for Dame,” Shelburne said. “Dame is from the Bay Area, I know he was interested. If he got to the point where he was gonna ask for a trade and the list was given, the Warriors initially would have been on that list. But I think now it’s not possible, right? Because of the moves they made, they sort of locked in. They could have waited, I think they did a smart thing by trading for Chris Paul when they did, preserve that optionality, plus they get a really good player.”

Lillard, of course, is from Oakland and maintains deep ties to the Bay Area, and if he wants to compete for a championship, a good way to do that is to join the team that has won more of them over the last decade than anyone else. Even though it stands to reason that Poole would have presented a lot of the same problems that Tyler Herro apparently does in talks between the Blazers and Heat, Golden State could have theoretically sweetened the pot with guys like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, if they wanted to go in that direction. But in the end, this is nothing more than an NBA what if … unless the Warriors, by some miracle, can somehow figure out a way to acquire Lillard.

The ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ Trailer Hopes You Like Jammin’ Too

Directed by King Richard‘s Reinaldo Marcus Green, One Love gives Bob Marley the biopic treatment, looking into a compelling life marred by war and buoyed by the hope for peace while head-bobbing to a ridiculous soundtrack.

The film stars Kingsley Ben-Adir (The OA, Peaky Blinders) as the Reggae icon with Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) as his wife, Rita Marley. From the look of the trailer, the biopic focuses almost entirely on Marley’s adult life and career throughout his rise to superstardom, following the aftermath of an assassination attempt, and into his defiance in the face of death. Naturally, there’s a ton of concert footage with Ben-Adir swinging dreads and blasting some of the best songs written in the 20th century. This is one of those biopics where the star doesn’t really look like the person they’re portraying, but the performance will hopefully make us forget.

It’s an excellent contrast: the chill vibes of the music, the sometimes melancholy lyrics, and the real-life tragedies.

Bob Marley: One Love is slated for release in January 2024, but based on the subject and the personnel involved (and the fact that we’re seeing this trailer right now), don’t be too surprised when it’s released in a few theaters at the end of 2023 for awards eligibility.

Even Former Trump Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany Is Defending Hunter Biden From White House Cocaine Accusations

As the former White House press secretary to Donald Trump, current Fox News personality Kayleigh McEnany was a prominent fixture in the former president’s administration. So, it’s notable that McEnany refused to entertain accusations that the cocaine found at the White House belongs to Hunter Biden, who’s been the target of several jokes from right-wing figures since the scandal broke.

While appearing on Fox & Friends on Thursday morning, McEnany pulled from her White House experience to explain to viewers how the cocaine was most likely found and why Hunter isn’t a potential suspect.

Via Mediaite:

She explained that the area is “heavily trafficked” and that the cocaine was likely “discovered rather quickly” because Secret Service officers watch the area.

“So it couldn’t have been there for days and days,” McEnany said. “It had have been there for — I would say — minutes before someone took notice.”

Considering the narcotics were most likely found quickly after the holiday weekend and in an area trafficked by visitors, McEnany said that’s enough evidence to let Hunter off the hook.

“For it to be Hunter Biden, he left on Friday, he was at Camp David. There’s no way,” McEnany said. “It’s inconceivable to think cocaine could sit for a 72-hour period, so I would rule him out at this point.”

Of course, McEnany’s stance is the complete opposite of her old boss. Trump has not only alleged that the cocaine belongs to Hunter, but he also said it belongs to President Joe Biden, too. Oh, and he also called Jack Smith a “crackhead.” Because it’s always a great idea to publicly insult the special counsel who’s already indicted for you mishandling classified documents and is still investigating your involvement in the January 6 attack. That should end well.

Audible ‘Breakthrough’ Alum Sasha McVeigh Delivers A Swaggering Rendition Of ‘Black Label’ On ‘The Eye’

Audible has something great going on with its new series, Breakthrough. Breakthrough takes the popular idea of a singing competition show and brings it to the audio-only format for the first time ever, letting artists’ voices and personalities shine brighter than anything else. The two-part finale debuted recently, so if you’re only just hearing about Breakthrough, you can go binge the whole thing now. (Read our introduction to the series before you do that, though.)

The audio-series featured five contestants, among them being Sasha McVeigh, a British singer who moved to Nashville to break into the country music industry. About a week after her Breakthrough season wrapped up, she dropped her first single since the show, “Black Label.” Furthermore, she’s just performed it for The Eye.

The Eye is our performance series in which up-and-coming artists take to an intimate studio space to deliver a rendition of a song in one take, with just one camera and one microphone. For her turn in the studio, McVeigh gave a charismatic performance of her country-rock stomper, in which she’s feeling self-assured about her backroad-friendly lifestyle.

The track starts, “Got an SUV, circa ’96 / My guy’s in the shotgun ’cause he don’t drive stick / Not trying to get hitched: I drive one / Not trying to get rich, but I get it done.” McVeigh delivers those lines and subsequent ones with a swagger and confidence that make it easy to see why she was given a shot on Breakthrough.
