The ‘After The Bite’ Trailer Wants Humankind To Learn Humility In The Face Of Nature (And Sharks)

At exactly the same moment in the After The Bite trailer where it’s natural to think, “Oh, right. Like Jaws,” a voice jumps in to remind you that it’s frivolous to get distracted by the Jaws-iness of the situation.

The documentary from director Ivy Meeropol chronicles the aftermath of a deadly shark attack, listening to the voices of the community, and extrapolating out to the bigger climate picture of why so many sharks are in the waters in the first place.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“A 2018 fatal shark attack on a boogie boarder in the town of Wellfleet, Massachusetts rocked visitors and residents in the idyllic summer community of Cape Cod, forcing them to respond to the encroachment of apex predators. With the numbers of sharks increasing every year, After The Bite explores the far-reaching repercussions for this beach community when rapid changes in the natural world begin to clash with a cherished way of life.

After The Bite is a deep dive into how one coastal community is renegotiating their relationship with our rapidly changing environment. The changes are numerous: warmer waters, species interacting where they never had before, along with the rapidly increasing numbers of the shark’s favorite prey, the North Atlantic gray seal, whose population has rebounded since seals were protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.”

With perspectives from lifeguards, conservationists, fishermen, journalists, paramedics, town residents, activists, and scientists, the documentary has every sharp angle covered.

After The Bite hits Max July 26th. Just in time to make us rethink our summer choices.

Tupac’s Decadeslong Murder Investigation Continues After Las Vegas Police Served A Warrant In Nearby Henderson

For the past 25-ish years, the murder of Tupac Shakur has remained hip-hop’s great unsolved mystery. But despite being nearly three decades old, the case has apparently never gone completely cold. Las Vegas Police recently sent out a press release notifying journalistic outlets that a warrant was served in nearby Henderson.

The statement reads, “LVMPD can confirm a search warrant was served in Henderson, Nevada on July 17, 2023, as part of the ongoing Tupac Shakur homicide investigation. We will have no further comment at this time.”

There’s not much to make of, there. After all, while the (possibly paired) murders of Tupac and friend-turned-enemy The Notorious BIG have been biopic inspiration and gossip fodder for the past 20 years, most of what’s out there has been speculation. The killings remain a subject of fascination largely due to the levels of celebrity involved, and the fact that two hip-hop icons were embroiled in a bitter war of words at the time of their deaths.

But much of the mythmaking has taken place after the fact; in 2021, Fat Joe claimed he’d worked with BIG on an album full of Tupac disses — a narrative subtly supported in 2022 by Busta Rhymes. Diddy also compared Jay-Z to the two late rappers. Meanwhile, FX recently aired a documentary about Tupac’s mom that generated a fair amount of buzz.

Ultimately, though, if police really found anything incriminating, they’d likely lead with that.

‘The View’s Whoopi Goldberg Took A Selfie With A 91-Year-Old Fan While The Panel Argued Over Miranda Lambert

The View had a very animated panel discussion on Tuesday morning as the co-hosts tackled the latest controversy surrounding Miranda Lambert. The country music star recently made headlines after she scolded fans for taking selfies during a performance at her Las Vegas residency on Saturday night.

While new evidence has come to light that shows the selfie-takers were being pretty obnoxious, The View panel was notably divided on who was out of line: Lambert or the fans. Sunny Hostin argued that she’s “going to take as many selfies as I want if I paid $757 for tickets,” which did not go over well with Whoopi Goldberg.

Via Entertainment Weekly:

“You know what? Stay home,” the Oscar-winning Ghost actress said. “If you’re going to spend $750 to come to my concert, then give me the respect of watching me while I do my thing, or don’t come.”

After Hostin said that she likes to keep memories from concerts on her phone to rewatch, Goldberg got up from her moderator seat and said, “Turn on the television, girl.”

However, Goldberg then did something that completely contradicted her argument. In the middle of the panel discussion, the co-host got up out of her seat and walked off camera to the surprise of the panel. “I’m leaving y’all,” Goldberg said as she headed into the audience for a surprise twist.

“I want to take a picture with this marvelous woman, who is 91. So, we’re going to do a selfie. Just me and you,” Goldberg said while posing for the photo. “Will you push that button? We’ll be right back.”

Payless Shoes made up a fake luxury shoe brand and fashion influencers totally fell for it

Have you ever heard of Palessi shoes? It’s a luxury shoe brand that only sells its shoes in pop-up events in upscale malls. But if you want to buy these shoes, you have to be one of the chosen VIPs, since shopping at Palessi is by “invitation only.”

Palessi looks like what you’d expect a luxury pop–up to look like, with a sleek, modern feel and each shoe being highlighted in its own lighted space. And the shopping experience does too, with young, hip, model-gorgeous employees dressed to the nines showing off the unique, stylistic features of each shoe before casually mentioning their $645 price tag.

If you’re one of the fashion influencers invited to shop at this new luxury shoe store, you wouldn’t bat an eye at that price. After all, the Palessi brand means something, and that’s the going price for a high-quality, luxury shoe, right?

Right. Except Palessi isn’t a real brand, and that $645 pair of shoes actually cost $35 at Payless.

Yes, the exact same pair of shoes.

The Palessi pop-up was a real social experiment run by now-defunct Payless ShoeSource in 2018 to make a point. “Luxury” items are far more about perceived value than actual value, and it’s not that hard to get people to buy into a brand simply through presentation and a hefty price tag.

All Payless did was create the Palessi “brand,” including a website and social media pages, and then invite a bunch of fashion influencers to a pop-up grand opening. The influencers were wined and dined them and then sold Payless shoes as “Palessi” with a markup of hundreds of dollars.

One influencer said she would pay $400 for a pair of sneakers she was shown.

Another influencer said, “I can tell it was made with high-quality material.”

Watch how they reacted to finding out they’d been duped into believing Payless shoes were a fancy, luxury shoe brand.

Does this mean that all shoes are created equal? Not quite. But it does mean that how much we perceive something to be worth can be a far cry from what it’s actually worth, and it’s not terribly difficult for companies to convince people to pay far more than they should for an item simply through effective marketing.

Not to mention, so much of the justification for buying expensive brands is that they are of higher quality and will therefore last longer, but since fashion preferences change so quickly, is that longevity even worth paying for? While comfort and style may be worth paying for, is it really worth a thousand percent more to buy a luxury brand? Especially when the people who are supposedly in the know can’t even tell the difference?

Troye Sivan Has Thoughts About The Criticism His ‘Rush’ Video Faced Over Lack Of Body Diversity

Towards the end of last week, Troye Sivan dropped a thumping new single, “Rush.” He also shared a video for the track, a fun video full of dancing and intimate moments. However, the video drew some criticism for a lack of body diversity. As one Twitter user put it, “I adore Troye Sivan, but this ‘Rush’ video is making me feel some type of way. It seems like a case study on how white gays choose to view queer people as a whole. There’s not a single fat person in the entire video. Just white twinks and chiseled bodies.”

Now, Sivan has shared his perspective. He responded to the backlash in an interview with Billboard published today (July 18), saying, “I definitely hear the critique. To be honest, it just wasn’t a thought we had — we obviously weren’t saying, ‘We want to have one specific type of person in the video.’ We just made the video, and there wasn’t a ton of thought put behind that.”

He added, “There was this article yesterday, and they were talking about [the lack of body diversity], and in the same sentence, this person said ‘Eat something, you stupid twinks.’ That really bummed me out to read that, because I’ve had my own insecurities with my body image. I think that everyone’s body is as beautiful as it is, including my own, and it just sucks to see people talking about other people’s bodies.”

Chloe Bailey Celebrated Her First Carnival With An Impressive, Booty-Baring Mas Costume

Carnival is a worldwide tradition going back hundreds of years involving music, parades, and revealing costumes, called mas (short for masquerade). And if there’s one star who loves revealing costumes, it’s Chloe Bailey. The In Pieces singer recently attended the celebration in St. Lucia (her godmother’s home country) and shared her cheeky mas costume online. Like many costumes, it’s an elaborate display of feathers, beads, and jewelry — in this case, the feathers are orange, violet, and magenta — arranged on a skimpy swimsuit with a huge headdress to match. I think Chlöe’s swimsuit here is technically a one piece, although that piece leaves very little to the imagination.

Chlöe is currently between legs of the North American tour for debut album In Pieces. The first leg of the tour wrapped up in May and she’s apparently taking a little break before the second leg of the tour begins in August with her performance at Sol Blume Festival. During the tour, she reunited with her sister Halle Bailey to perform songs from their album Ungodly Hour for the first time since Halle began filming The Little Mermaid. Halle recently teased that the sisters were “not finished making music together,” suggesting that now that the press for The Little Mermaid is winding down, they might reunite for a follow-up to Ungodly Hour.

DDG Accepts His Role As The Villain On ‘Maybe It’s Me’

When I listened to “Famous,” the opening track off DDG’s latest EP release, Maybe It’s Me, for the first time, it felt like reading the artist’s diary. The first lines left me feeling like I shouldn’t know any of this — but I couldn’t put it down.

In “Famous,” the Pontiac, Michigan rapper describes being insecure about his relationship with his girlfriend Halle Bailey. He raps, “The hardest thing I ever did was fall in love with a famous b*tch,” exposing the feelings of jealousy that he felt while she was promoting her film The Little Mermaid, and shares some of his fleeting thoughts of sabotage. While some folks would take those secrets to the grave (the backlash he’s receiving showing exactly why), he’s taking the toxic vulnerability path of Drake and Future. The overall arching theme of Maybe It’s Me is DDG embracing being the villain.

“I feel like my last project is basically, me going from playing the victim to me being the villain,” DDG told Uproxx the day of the EP’s release. “Accepting the role as a villain.” In an interview with DDG as he shopped for jewelry on Rodeo Drive, the controversial rapper detailed his TikTok-favorite single “I’m Geekin” and the controversy surrounding “Famous.”

Why do you think that people have started to not like you?

I honestly don’t know, to be honest.

Is it surprising for you?

To be real. It used to be, but now it’s kind of whatever, it is what it is. It’s just the internet. I see a lot of artists get hated on.

When I first heard “Famous,” the first thing I wanted to know was if Halle heard it before you put it out.

Yeah, she heard it.

She was okay with you putting it on the project?

Yeah. It’s just music. Sometimes I exaggerate situations purposely for the sake of the song. I think I’m going to just stop trolling. They can’t handle my humor, so I’m gonna just chill, drop music, and let it ride out.

You recently mentioned in a vlog how you wanted to start taking music more seriously and stop making the kind of videos you’re known for and on “Hard On Myself” you say: “Doin’ videos on the ‘net, but I’d rather just rap / One day, I’ma take that leap of faith and just focus on that.”

What’s holding you back from taking that leap of faith, outside the YouTube money?

It is just like – that’s how a lot of people might fall off in a way. They try to abandon what they are, where they got solid, for something that could work out or couldn’t. But, I just really want to do music. I’m just passionate about it. I ain’t tripping on no money or no shit. I just want to see how far I can do the music stuff.

I also want to also talk about the sound of the project because some of the songs like “Rizz” and “Rambo” sound like the early SoundCloud rap era. Is that what you were going for?

Nah, I wouldn’t say that vibe. I’d say I just got a few songs that are more specifically for performance. Then I got some songs that are more experimental, like the “Famous” song. It’s like a UK garage/hip-hop beat — a new sound that I was trying out. You got the slow joints, but the ones that were hyped are for performance.

“Hard on Myself” is nice. What made you record a song like that? Do you have more songs like that?

I don’t. That’s the only song I made like that. That’s where I feel like I am seeing what people like. They like that intellectual, lyrical, slow melody vibe. I feel like since the wintertime coming up I need to get something out for that time. I’m just locking in on that sound.

Since the internet jokes that they can’t name five DDG songs, what are five songs people should add to their playlist to get to know who you are musically?

I would say “I’m Geekin,” “Treat Me Right,” “Stay in My Circle,” “Impatient” and “Elon Musk.”

Tell me what it was like when you linked up with Luh Tyler for the first “I’m Geekin” remix.

That was lit. He’s a cool dude. It was dope. Good vibes. We got in the studio before. He hit me up to hop on the remix and sent me his verse back ASAP. It was like two days.

How did the “I’m Geekin” remix with Bia and NLE Choppa happen?

Choppa told me he wanted to get on it and then my A&R sent it to Bia. But, we are all cool though.

When Lady Gaga posted a TikTok to “I’m Geekin,” was that expected?

No, that was definitely the most unexpected thing.

You have a tweet that says female rappers are winning. Which five are you checking for right now?

I’d say Bia, Cardi B, Latto, Coi Leray, and Nicki Minaj.

Considering the song “Pioneer” and your journey so far, would you say you are creating your own kind of blueprint?

Yeah, I would say so. I feel like what I’m doing is extremely difficult. That’s why it hasn’t been done at my magnitude yet.

In a past interview with Uproxx, you said you wanted to know what it felt like to be Drake, Lil Baby, 50 Cent, and Diddy. You said, “I want to know what it feels like and I’m chasing that experience.” How close to that do you feel like you are?

I don’t know. I feel like I’m pretty far. I don’t look at any of my accomplishments and be like, “Oh, I’m getting closer.” I feel like my success has no limit. It’s hard for me to gauge how close I am to anything. I feel like when you get older it’s like, in the music industry especially, you don’t want to rap your whole life. You want to be able to have a catalog where you can also do other sh*t.

Is there an album next or will there be a third installment to this It’s Not Me It’s You, Maybe It’s Me, toxic series?

No, I’m working on the album. I’m going to put out a real album with a good amount of songs. One solid consistent sound. I have been talking to OG Parker about a Die 4 Respect 2 project. That might come about at some point.

Maybe It’s Me is out now via Epic Records.

Julie Bowen Is Team Sofía In The Sofía Vergara/Joe Manganiello Divorce

It’s been a brutal week for celebrity relationships. Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez have seperated. Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello are getting divorced. Tom Brady and Kim Kardashian are maybe seeing each other, which is good for them, I guess, but terrible for society at large. So let’s focus on Vergara and Manganiello.

The Modern Family and Magic Mike XXL stars are done after seven years of marriage. “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives,” they said in a statement provided to Page Six. If you were hoping to be Vergara’s cheerleader during this rough time, you’re too late: Julie Bowen beat you to it.

“This is what single and 🔥 looks like!!!❤❤❤❤❤,” Bowen, 53, commented on a series of Monday, July 17, Instagram photos of Vergara, 51, in a formfitting one-piece bathing suit. Vergara captioned the snaps from her trip to Italy: “Last days of vacay! Even when u r so hot I love u Ravello!!! 😁😁.”

Bowen (who’s holding out for Harry Styles) previously complimented Manganiello on being a “caveman” around Vergara (“It’s sexy! I love it. She’s so strong, and so [used to] calling the shots all the time, and then you see them together and there’s a part of her that kind of melts”), but times have changed.

If Vergara starts seeing someone new, Bowen knows a great first date spot.

Alex Jones Says There’s A ‘95% Chance’ Democrats Will Distract The Masses From Trump’s Jan. 6 Indictment With ‘A Meteorite’

When Alex Jones and Roger Stone get together, you know you’ve got the top minds of MAGA-world working at full power. Nothing is going to get by those two, and in this case, that involves Donald Trump revealing that he received a target letter from Special Counsel Jack Smith for his involvement in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capital and various other attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

According to Jones, the Democrats are obviously going to plan some sort of false flag attack to distract the masses from Trump being indicted for the third time even though most Democrats want people to know that the former president in a constant world of legal trouble.

Nevertheless, Jones told Stone that he’s convinced the Dems will probably do something involving “a meteorite” as they so often do?

Via Raw Story:

“That’s why you agree that minus them doing a false flag, these attacks on populism and who we want and our president won’t work,” Jones said. “I’m just saying, how else are they going to do this when it’s destroying them and get away with it?”

“I don’t see how else, another war, a power outage, a meteorite, how do they change the subject from the persecution of who we want and who our president is?” he added.

Jones also suggested the Democrats would stage a “false flag” to make Trump supporters look bad.

“I’d say 95% chance, truck bombs, mass shootings, blamed on Trump, blamed on you, blamed on me,” Jones said. “I would say right after he’s indicted.”

Wrong, Alex. The Democrats are going to specifically blame you for the meteorite. You shouldn’t have trifled with space, man!

Is Travis Scott’s Egypt ‘Utopia’ Concert Canceled?

Travis Scott’s upcoming fourth studio album, Utopia, has the world talking, as it’s his first full-length album in five years. It’s also his first since the Astroworld Festival tragedy of 2021. Scott plans to make his comeback in Egypt, where he would perform Utopia in full at the Giza pyramids.

There were reports, though, that the event would not go on as planned due to cultural concerns from the Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate. However, Live Nation now says that is untrue, telling Pitchfork, “There have been no changes to Travis Scott’s show in Egypt; any reports to the contrary are false. We can’t wait to celebrate ‘Utopia’ with you in Egypt!”

The Egyptian Musicians’ Syndicate issued a statement this morning (July 18) noting that portions of Scott’s performances may not fall in line with traditional Egyptian and Arab customs, and they will therefore not grant Scott the necessary permits for the show. That said, it’s not clear if the group actually has the authority to cancel the performance.

You can read the full statement from Dr. Mohamed Abdullah, an official spokesman of the Musicians’ Syndicate, below (via Egypt Today).

“Regarding the concert scheduled to be held on 28th July at the Pyramids area in Giza by American rapper Travis Scott, the Musicians’ Syndicate, as the entity responsible for issuing licenses for music and singing concerts in Egypt, in coordination with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture represented by the Censorship Authority for Artistic Works and the Ministry of Labor, emphasizes the necessity of considering security aspects and obtaining approvals from the relevant authorities as a top priority when organizing concerts. This is to ensure the safety and protection of the audience.

While the Musicians’ Syndicate has welcomed various art forms and concerts in recent months, it has set conditions and regulations to safeguard the customs and traditions inherited by the Egyptian people.

As the Musicians’ Syndicate is part of the fabric of our beloved country, it works towards its stability and security and rejects any tampering with the societal values, customs, and traditions of Egypt and the Arab world. After examining social media opinions and feedback, as well as the news circulating on search engines and social media platforms, which included authenticated images and information about peculiar rituals performed by the star during his performance, contradicting our authentic societal values and traditions, the Syndicate’s president and board of directors have decided to cancel the license issued for hosting this type of concert, which goes against the cultural identity of the Egyptian people.”

Utopia is out 7/28 via Epic. Find more information here.
