It’s Always Time For a Daiquiri With These Riffs On The Classic Recipe

There’s a solid possibility that when you think about a daiquiri, your mind immediately heads to a frozen strawberry slushy or some other ice-filled riff on the classic. And, if that’s your jam, that’s more than okay with us. We’re not here to judge. It’s frozen, refreshing, and highly flavorful when made right. But it’s just not a true daiquiri. At least not the kind of daiquiri Hemingway would have enjoyed.

The classic daiquiri is simple, citrus-driven, and (if we’re all being honest) even more perfect for summer weather than its slushie counterpart. To make a classic daiquiri, you don’t need a high-powered blender. Also, you don’t need strawberries. All you need is rum, lime juice, simple syrup, and ice to shake with. Really, that’s it. Don’t believe us?

Here’s a recipe from our own Zach Johnston proving this from a few years ago:

Ingredients:

2-oz. white rum
1-oz. fresh lime juice
0.5-oz. sugar cane syrup
Lime peel
Ice

Method:

Add the rum, lime juice, and syrup to the cocktail shaker. Top up with ice and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is ice cold to touch (15 to 20 seconds). Strain the cocktail into the waiting, pre-chilled glass. Spritz the lime oils from the peel over the glass, rub the peel’s oils around the stem, bowl, and rim of the glass, and drop the peel into the cocktail. Serve.

While the traditional daiquiri recipe is simple, fresh, and really easy to whip up when your friends text you that they’re on the way and they’re thirsty, the best thing about the daiquiri is its versatility. You can stay true to the original recipe while adding complimentary flavors (without turning it into a cloying frozen beverage).

To prove it, we’ve compiled a list of some of the best, summery daiquiri riffs from some of our favorite bars, restaurants, and bartenders. Keep scrolling to see them all. Maybe you’re only a few clicks from your new favorite daiquiri.

The Gertrude Stein

Shawn Miller

By Shawn Miller, beverage director at Forsythia in Philadelphia

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Smith and Cross Navy Strength Rum
  • .5 oz. bitter melon-infused white rum
  • .75 oz. key lime juice
  • .25 oz. Cherry Herring
  • .25 oz. simple syrup

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients and double strain into a coupe or martini glass. Note: bitter melon can be infused by chopping and deseeding bitter melon and sitting in rum for 2 days then straining.

A play on the Hemingway Daiquiri with a more vegetal and deeply bitter flavor profile. The Cherry Herring adds a fruitier, sweeter note compared with the usual Hemingway Daiquiri addition of maraschino liqueur.Shawn Miller, beverage director at Forsythia in Philadelphia

Salted Daiquiri

Salted Daiquiri
Caroline Patton

By Alex Barbatsis, head bartender at The Whistler in Chicago

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. of Banks 5 Island Rum
  • 0.5 oz. Lime Oleo
  • Small pinch of salt

Lime Oleo Ingredients:

  • Husks of six limes after juicing
  • 500 ml of white sugar

Preparation:

Muddle lime husks and white sugar until a gooey, baby food-like mixture is produced. Let sit covered for one hour. Add 500 ml of boiled water and fully saturate all of the sugar. Let sit for 15 minutes and then strain with a coffee filter. Stir in a mixing glass with ice, strain into a chilled Nic & Nora glass

This is a cross between a daiquiri, a Ti Punch, and a classic style gimlet you might find in a steakhouse. It’s aromatic and strong with a refreshing bright note at the end. The idea behind this drink was to make something that would fit in on a classic cocktail menu or as an aromatic option at a tropical bar.Alex Barbatsis, head bartender at The Whistler in Chicago

Don Johnny

Nicole Schofield, PUNCH Media

By Bolo in Philadelphia

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. El Dorado 12 Year Rum
  • .75 oz. sofrito shrub
  • .75 o. z lime juice

Sofrito Shrub Ingredients:

Equal parts sofrito, champagne vinegar, and sugar, plus a pinch of salt.

Preparation:

Combine ingredients in a shaker over ice, shake, and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with fresh bay leaf.

The “Don Johnny” has the basic bones of a daiquiri, but with a twist that pays homage to the cuisine of the restaurant (Bolo). The herbaceous sofrito combined with the vinegar to create the shrub leads to a very savory taste that isn’t often associated with a tropical cocktail. The nose of fresh bay leaf garnish helps complete the transportation from the bar to the kitchen.Evan Maffiore, Bar Manager at Bolo in Philadelphia

The Danforth Daiquiri

The Danforth

By Devon Tarby at The Danforth in Portland, Maine

Ingredients:

  • 0.5 oz. Singani 63
  • 1.25 oz. Plantation 3 Star Rum
  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • 0.5 oz. Creme de Peche de Vigne
  • 0.25 oz. Demerara Gum

Preparation:

Shake ingredients over ice then strain into a coup. Garnish with a lime wedge.

The Danforth Daiquiri was built to drink very much like a traditional Daiquiri — light, crisp, and refreshing — with a subtle hint of fruit from the addition of peach liqueur. Singani 63 is a critical component of this cocktail in that it contributes a texture reminiscent of biting through fresh peach skin, while also helping to taper the candy-like notes that peach liqueur can sometimes contribute to a drink.By Devon Tarby at The Danforth in Portland, Maine

By Christopher Devern, lead bartender at Red Owl Tavern in Philadelphia

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. Plantation 3 Star Rum
  • .25 oz. Falernum
  • .25 oz. Pisco
  • .75 oz. honeydew syrup
  • .75 oz. lemon juice
  • 4 dashes of rose water

Preparation:

Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin and shake. Strain over ice or up if that’s your preference. Garnish with edible flowers.

This take on a daiquiri is light, refreshing, and floral as it is comprised of Plantation 3 Star Rum, a white blend from Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad, as well as honeydew syrup, Falernum, Pisco, rose water, and fresh lime juice. We’ve garnished it with an edible flower that lends enticing floral aromas of lavender and eucalyptus. The perfect summer daiquiri that will have you wanting to “dew” it again.Christopher Devern, lead bartender at Red Owl Tavern in Philadelphia

Stratus Rooftop Bar

By Patrick Banko, lead bartender at Stratus Rooftop Lounge in Philadelphia

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. Plantation 3 Star Rum
  • .75 oz. blackberry syrup
  • .5 oz. lime juice
  • .5 oz. Wrap and Nephew Overproof Rum

Preparation:

Shake all ingredients and double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with either a blackberry or lime wheel.

This cocktail is a fun riff on the traditional daiquiri while also adding some unique and fun flavors. The blackberry gives the cocktail the perfect summertime sweetness while the Wray and Nephew really assert the fact that it is still a rum cocktail. This cocktail is perfect for those who ask for a strong drink, the traditional rum lover, or the casual summertime sipper.Patrick Banko, Lead Bartender at Stratus Rooftop Lounge in Philadelphia

The Hemingway Daiquiri

By at Lazia at Crossroads Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. white rum
  • .5 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • .75 oz. lime juice
  • .5 oz. grapefruit juice
  • Garnish with a lime wheel

Preparation:

Pour all ingredients into a shaker with ice cubes. Shake well. Strain in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

The Hemingway daiquiri is a great riff on a classic for those who prefer cocktails with minimal sweetness and a bit of a tart bite. Ernest Hemingway spent the better part of 20 years living just outside of Havana, Cuba. He became quite a staple in the country, affectionately referred to by the locals as “Papa” and remains one of the best-known figures in Cuban culture. History tells us that in the early 1930s, Hemingway stopped at El Floridita, a local bar in Havana, and ordered their standard daiquiri. After tasting it, he is quoted as saying ‘That’s good but I prefer it without sugar and double the rum’. That day, the drink was made exactly as ordered and was referred to as ‘Daiquiri Like Papa’ and later ‘Papa Doble’. Years later, the head bartender at El Floridita added maraschino liqueur and grapefruit juice to create the Hemingway daiquiri as we know it today.Megan Anderson, general manager at Lazia in Kansas City

Tomi Lahren Argues (Alas, Not Very Well) That Taylor Swift Is ‘Better Qualified’ To Handle The U.S. Economy Than Most Biden Staffers

The entertainment industry is in a bit of a pickle. There are dueling Hollywood strikes. Even Tom Cruise movies might be (slightly) underperforming. But you know who’s doing just fine? Taylor Swift. Not only is The Eras Tour is a goldmine, but right now she has four (4) albums in the Billboard Top 10. Taylor knows how to make money, so why not put her in charge of the economy, asked a noted far right crank.

As per Mediaite, Tomi Lahren went on Fox Business’ Varney & Co. Monday, where she and host Stuart Varney inevitably spoke about Taylor’s tour. Varney said it was doing so well that “the Federal Reserve is paying attention to it.” After all, her concerts, when they conclude, could wind up generating $4.6 billion for the economy. “Maybe the White House should consider hiring Taylor for the campaign,” joked Varney.

But Lahren wasn’t joking.

“She would be better qualified than a lot of the people currently working in the White House,” Lahren claimed, saying she thought “it would be a great idea.” She pointed out that it’s not just the shows that has people forking over dough. It’s hotels, plane tickets, money spent in the towns in which shows take place.

“So this is a big generator and we should maybe take a page out of Taylor Swift’s book here,” Lahren argued. “She’s got something that people wanna buy and I think that it’s doing great things for the economy. So I think everybody wins in this situation.”

Problem is, Taylor Swift is definitely not MAGA. “She definitely is on the left side of politics, that is for sure,” Lahren admitted. “But all of that aside, she is generating money for the economy and she’s doing it in a way that a lot of people are excited to go see. So again, if there is a spot open, I think in the White House, she could maybe solve a lot of problems there. I think she would do a lot better than some of the other pick.”

So Tomi Lahren thinks Taylor should be in the White House. But did she think any of this through? What kinds of advice would Taylor Swift give to the nation’s leading economists? Maybe she could tell them to… send her back on tour so she can singlehandedly save the economy? Or she could hatch up the brilliant idea that other absurdly popular musicians should hit the road. American taxpayers could even pay her salary, on top of what she already makes as one of the nation’s top musical acts.

Still, better Lahren saying Taylor Swift should hang out at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. than her spouting any of her other odd beliefs.

Gunna Is Bringing ‘The Gift’ To Brooklyn And ‘The Curse’ To Los Angeles For His First Concerts Of 2023

Now that Gunna is officially back, he’s gearing up for his first shows in over a year, booking the Barclays Center in New York and YouTube Theater in Los Angeles for a pair of comeback concerts in September. Presumably, he’s testing the waters for a full-length tour before committing the resources to one — something that some of his peers may want to look into before attempting full-fledged arena tours next time around.

Naturally, Gunna will be performing songs from his new album, A Gift And A Curse, and fittingly themed each of the shows for one half of the album’s title/concept. The New York show, taking place on Saturday, September 9, will be “The Gift,” while the Thursday, September 28 show in Los Angeles will be “The Curse” (ahem, excuse you, sir). If he explains the reasoning behind each selection, it’ll likely be at the shows rather than before; since accepting a plea deal to get out of jail, the Atlanta rapper has made himself scarce online.

Who could blame him, with half the rap world calling him a snitch — regardless of the circumstances of the deal, which so far has only required him to plead guilty to one count of racketeering. While that’s still bad news for Young Thug, who remains incarcerated awaiting trial, Gunna is not required to testify under the terms of his plea. For now, though, rap fans who aren’t worried about all that can look forward to seeing Gunna live on stage again very soon.

Gunna is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Report: A ‘Good Chance’ Mike Breen, Doc Rivers, And Doris Burke Make Up ESPN’s Lead NBA Broadcast Team

When ESPN went through its latest round of layoffs, there were a number of big names that were let go by the sports media giant. On the NBA side, two of the longtime faces of the network’s coverage were laid off, with Jeff Van Gundy and Jalen Rose having their lengthy tenures with ESPN ended unceremoniously.

That means there will be a shakeup to both the NBA Countdown desk as well as the lead broadcast booth for next season’s coverage, and there were immediately a number of names floated as possible replacements for both. On Monday, a report from Chad Finn of the Boston Globe noted that former Magic, Celtics, Clippers, and Sixers coach (and former broadcaster at ABC) Doc Rivers and Doris Burke were a likely duo to join Mike Breen on the call as ESPN’s top broadcast booth next season.

Rivers was fired by the Sixers this offseason and was floated as a potential Van Gundy replacement by Andrew Marchand of the New York Post when word first broke of Van Gundy being let go, with Marchand noting the money left on Rivers’ Sixers deal could make him easier for ESPN to bring in at a lower salary. Burke, meanwhile, has been a favorite in the booth and is one of the best analysts in the business, having previously worked sidelines for the Finals and more recently doing the ESPN Radio broadcast for the conference finals and Finals.

What this report also indicates is Mark Jackson will no longer be part of ESPN’s lead booth, which raises questions about whether he will be shuffled back into a secondary team — one would think alongside Mark Jones, who has occasionally called games with Jackson and is typically partnered with Burke. In any case, this provides at least one good possibility of what ESPN’s main broadcast team will look like next season, while we still wait to find out how ESPN will shuffle their seemingly ever-changing studio show lineup.

Daryl Dixon’s Weapon Of Choice Is The First Thing That Finally Makes Sense About His ‘The Walking Dead’ Spinoff

Finally. Not a lot has made sense about The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon so far, but we’re getting there, people.

To briefly recap, The Walking Dead: Dead City is closing in on its final episode of the Semi-Old Negan and Maggie spinoff’s first season. And on September 10, Daryl In Paris will be on the way to bring us glamorous zombies or something. Only kidding on that last point, but really, not much that has been revealed thus far jibes with what we know about this universe.

For instance, Daryl apparently ended up on a boat and slept his way across the ocean, and he has no idea how he washes ashore in France. Also, no one knows where Dog might be, but he’s not with Daryl. The Internet let slip that Melissa McBride’s Carol has been photographed on the set, but we don’t know if those scenes will be in the Commonwealth or if she somehow ends up in France, too. I’m guessing the former, but we don’t know for sure. Additionally, Daryl ends up riding on a horse without a motorcycle or even a Vespa in sight in preview images, and don’t even get me started on those sadistic nuns teased by AMC.

With all of these questions up in the air, one thing that I have truly wished for is to see Daryl pick up a crossbow again. And hey, finally, AMC has given us some new images that include Daryl with some sort of pistol-crossbow package. Behold.
