Incredibly talented baseball-playing dog makes perfect contact with wiffle ball bat

Dogs have an incredible ability to track moving objects and catch frisbees and balls thrown in their direction. Upworthy even highlighted a dog that caught a home run at a Dodger spring training game earlier this year.

So, at this point, it isn’t that surprising to find a dog that could pass for an outfielder. But we may have found the first dog that could stand at home plate and hit a home run. Meet Pepper, a 7-year-old Australian Cattle Dog who lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

For the past three years, Pepper has trained to hit Daniel Martin’s pitches at a car garage, and her swing is pretty amazing.

“She typically swings when a ball is thrown quickly overhand to her, but will also swing at the ball when it is tossed to her with a hockey stick,” Martin said, according to Yahoo. “Her batting ratio is so good that it clearly isn’t a fluke. When you watch slow-motion video of her playing, she has her eyes on the ball even as it approaches her quickly. She’s very talented.”

Pepper is funny because she swings so hard she’s forced to spin around in a circle (unlike a human, who can take a rip at a ball and stay in the batter’s box).

A big reason why Pepper has been able to pick up the game of baseball is her breed. Australian Cattle Dogs are extremely intelligent. According to Heeler Info, the Australian Cattle Dog is ranked 10th out of 138 breeds in terms of intelligence and can learn new commands in as little as five repetitions.

Who knows, maybe with a bit of training, Pepper could be the first dog to hit a curveball.

Trippie Redd & Roddy Ricch’s ‘Closed Doors’ Video Is A Sweet Bite-Sized Look Into Their More Romantic Sides

Trippie Redd is among the biggest rap ragers, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a soft spot. On his new single, “Closed Doors,” off his new album, A Love Letter To You 5, Trippie teams with Roddy Ricch to show off their more romantic sides. The official video for the track, which was directed by Cole Bennett, is a sweet bite-sized look at the lengths the pair will go to for their special ladies.

In the video, Trippie and Roddy visually shrink themselves down as a metaphor for how they are willing to step out of their superstar personas for their gals. Although Trippie is known for his signature grunge sound, he has no problems throwing himself into the song’s R&B sounds.

Trippee even pays homage to singer Lloyd’s 2004 song “Southside” as Trippie melodically raps, “I done popped a Perky, waitin’ on an Addy / Got us doin’ things we ain’t done before / F*ckin’ you in mansions, crib came with expansions / Doing dirty things behind closed doors / I got you Dior sight / Got you catchin’ feelings, we was so tight / That p*ssy good, I co-sign / We both end up doin’ dirty things behind closed doors.”

This small tribute was a stellar touch on the part of the producers of “Closed Doors,” Igor Mamet, Puku, Niketaz, and OneintheForest.

Roddy Ricch’s verse perfectly aligns with “Closed Doors”‘ theme, with him dedicating his stanza to his better half: “I love the way you deal with a nigga, that’s so anti / Knew it was real when you got my name tatted on your backside / You love my highs and my lows in the worst way / And you make every day I wake up feel like my birthday.”

Watch the full video for “Closed Doors” above.

A Love Letter To You 5 is out now via 1400 Entertainment/10K Projects. Find more information here.

Roddy Ricch is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The ‘Chrisley Knows Best’ Kids Are Getting Their Own Reality Show While Their Parents Languish In Prison

Late last year, the long-running reality show Chrisley Knows Best came to an unexpected end: Its two main stars were sentenced to prison. But the show must go on, and so it will now that the non-jailed portion of the real estate-rich family are getting their own spin-off series.

As per Page Six, kids Chase, Savannah, Chloe, and Grayson — along with “Nanny” Faye Chrisley, aka the mother of imprisoned patriarch Todd — have signed a deal with the Scout Productions, the company behind Queer Eye, to return to the airwaves, sans the family heads. The show will watch as they “pick up their lives” after their parents were found guilty of multiple charges and sent to the clink for lengthy stays.

Last summer, Todd and his wife Julie were both found guilty on various charges of fraud and tax evasion. It took another five months for them to be sentenced, and the judge didn’t go light: Todd got 12 yeas while Julie “only” got six. Both began their sentences back in January. They were first indicted in 2019, but they kept shooting episodes of their much-watched USA Network reality show.

At the time her parents were beginning their prison stints, daughter Savannah, 26, revealed she had already been “talking to a few production companies” about getting the brood back on TV.

Dalvin Cook Is Signing A 1-Year Deal With The New York Jets

The New York Jets have high hopes coming into this summer thanks to a star addition from the NFC North, as Aaron Rodgers is now in town to lead the offense and serve as the best quarterback they’ve had in a very long time.

With how well the Rodgers addition has been received in the locker room and by fans, the team has decided to seek out another offensive upgrade from the same division, with word breaking on Monday that the Jets are signing former Vikings running back Dalvin Cook to a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million.

It appears Cook waited for Ezekiel Elliott’s contract with the Patriots to be signed, setting the market for former veteran star backs at 1-year, $6 million ($3 million base). For the Jets, they add a back coming off of four straight 1,000 yard rushing seasons, including 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns a year ago in Minnesota. The former Florida State standout was released this summer by the Vikings and it was widely assumed he would land in New York for the past few weeks, it was just a matter of getting the details of the contract right. That has now happened and it’ll be interesting to get to watch the Jets integrate Cook into a running back room that unsurprisingly did not want him in town. Still, with Breece Hall working his way back from an ACL injury, Cook will give the Jets a second high-level back, pushing the rest of the Jets RB hopefuls further down the depth chart.

Mom shares why she let her 17-year-old get top surgery. His face says it all.

Top surgery, otherwise known as chest feminization or chest masculinization, is a gender-affirming procedure that changes the looks of a trans person’s chest. For female-to-male top surgery, breast tissue is removed to give a more masculine appearance for transgender males and non-binary people who are assigned female at birth.

This procedure, along with all forms of gender-affirming care, is surrounded by stigma and misinformation, especially when it comes to minors. Many parents fear that a teen could make a severe, irreversible decision regarding their gender presentation, given that adolescence is a time when the whole subject of identity is in flux.

It’s partially fears like this that have resulted in gender-affirming care receiving a wave of backlash in America, even being labeled as a form of child abuse.

However, a mom by the name of Janna, who recently helped her 17-year-old son receive top surgery, sees it as a form of love.

“Why would I ever allow my 17-year-old to have top surgery? Why would I do that? That’s insane. That’s crazy. It’s child abuse,” says Janna in a clip posted to TikTok.

Her reasoning is really quite simple—and something that almost every parent can relate to in one way or another.

“You look at the really, really happy kid who walked out of the doctor’s office today, feeling really great about himself for the first time in I don’t even know how long.”

Janna then put the spotlight on her son Cody and asked what it felt like when he saw his chest for the first time.

Getting instantly teary, Cody replied, “Normal…It finally feels right for the first time.”

Janna’s video is captioned “Cody’s heart is so full right now.”

Janna, who regularly advocates for trans rights, has previously explained in another TikTok that Cody didn’t undergo any surgery until just before his 18th birthday, and that was only after “a lot of meetings” with doctors, therapists and both of his parents since coming out at the age of 15.

And prior to his procedure, Janna encouraged Cody to explore through a “social transition,” rather than a medical one. This basically means experimenting with other forms of gender presentation—changing their name, pronouns, wardrobe, etc.—that feel more fitting to their authentic identity before undergoing any surgeries.

Bottom line: “We are not just sending these kids to surgeons to have body parts removed. That doesn’t happen,” Janna stated.

When parents support their kids throughout their journey, “one of two things is going to happen,” she added. “They’re going to come out as trans when they’re old enough to really make that decision, or they’re going to say, ‘Yeah, I’m not really a boy.'”

“Either way,” she continued, “their relationship with you will not be tarnished because they know that my mom loved me no matter what my decisions were.”

Like every other turbulent and confusing chapter of teenage-hood, the waters are so much easier to navigate (for both the parent and the child) when there is compassion. Sometimes allowing kids to be who they really are is the best gift a parent can provide.

It’s easy to be duped by online hoaxes — so we spoke with an expert at spotting fake news.

“Fake news” is more than just the phrase the president uses to brush aside stories he doesn’t like. It’s a real thing, and something we should all be on the lookout for.

Below is an image of Parkland student Emma González tearing up a copy of the U.S. Constitution that went viral in 2018, sending some corners of social media into a frenzy.

There was one problem, however: It was totally fake.

The actual photo came from a Teen Vogue video shoot featuring her and some of the other Parkland students. In the real clip, González is seen tearing up a paper shooting target.

fake news, Teen Vogue, gun rights, activism

The fact-check was swift, but a lot of damage was done, as the altered image continued making the rounds.

It’s easy to be duped by online hoaxes — so we spoke with someone whose job it was to spot them every day.

At the time of this incident, managing editor Brooke Binkowski wrestled with the importance of truth and figuring out how to stop the spread of hoaxes every day for the highly trusted fact-checking website Snopes.

fact checking, fake news, urban legends, story, news topics

The site, launched in 1994, began as a collection of fact-checks on some of the internet’s early urban legends. Wanted to find out whether or not that story about the killer with a hook for a hand was true? Snopes had you covered. Needed to know whether your favorite brand of bubble gum is filled with spider eggs? The answer was just one click away.

As the site evolved its taken on more serious topics, online hoaxes, and “fake news.” Did Donald Trump wade into the waters of a flooded Texas city to save two cats from drowning after Hurricane Harvey? (No.) Did Barack Obama congratulate Vladimir Putin on his 2012 electoral victory? (Yes.)

Snopes is often cited alongside FactCheck.org and PolitiFact as some of the best, most accurate, and bias-free fact-checking websites in the world, even earning it a partnership with Facebook.

Binkowski spoke with Upworthy about how to deal with increasingly sophisticated hoaxes we all encounter online (and gave us a few behind-the-scenes secrets about how the people at Snopes do what they do best).

The following interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.

Why does the truth matter, and what harm is there in sharing fake stories?

The truth matters because without being able to agree on the most basic facts, there is no democracy. Democracy depends on an informed, educated populace in order to survive. To actively suppress curiosity or obscure facts is to actively suppress democratic norms.

When you share fake or misleading stories, first of all, don’t beat yourself up about it if you were trying not to! We all fall for it. Some of it is extremely convincing.

I strongly believe that the onus should not be on the individual to sift through all the garbage to find good, vetted news on top of every other thing they have going on in their life, as I hear many suggest — that’s why journalism exists. I think people are overall extremely smart and crave information, but without vetted and transparent information, they fall for conspiracy theorizing.

That’s what propaganda and disinformation seize on. If you repeat that pattern across a country, it dramatically erodes these democratic norms. Plus, have you ever tried to talk to a really entrenched conspiracy theorist?

So I would be as mindful as you can about the sources of stories and try your best not to share disinformation — and if you do, I would try to be upfront about it and delete it so that it does not spread.

Right now is a crucial time to be mindful, even though I just said the onus shouldn’t be on the individual. It shouldn’t, but we simply don’t have enough working journalists to go around right now, because our industry has been allowed to collapse in the name of executive profit.

Can you walk us through how Snopes fact-checks a story?

We don’t have any one specific way that we fact-check a story — there’s no real formula for doing so. A lot of what we do is so disappointing when I describe it to people, because it’s not magic. It’s “just” journalism.

I try to give my writers time and space to do the research that they need to do, although sometimes it’s a little difficult when we have “conspiracizing” from all sides. So sometimes, one of us will have to head to the library to pull books or go over to the local university to look through papers on campus.

A lot of the time we do old-fashioned reporting. Our staff is all over the United States and they know their stuff, so I’ll take advantage of that and send them out on the field sometimes. We also, of course, know the repeat fake-news and satire offenders, so that makes it easy, because we can save a lot of time just by noting that they have an all-purpose disclaimer buried somewhere on their site. Sometimes we do photo or video forensics and FOIA requests (not that we get a lot of those answered, hahaha).

We try to be as thorough and as transparent with our work as possible, which is why we have a source list at the bottom of each page and maybe describe our methodology in a bit more detail than we should — but that’s how we all roll.

Which is also why, on a side note, I find the conspiracy theories about us a bit puzzling. We’re really easy to track down online, we list all our sources, and we try to be as open as humanly possible without also being boring about our methodology.

And yet people still think we’re part of a grand conspiracy. I’m still waiting for my check from George Soros/the Lizard People/the Clinton Foundation, though. It’s been, like, 20 years!

…OK, if you’re a conspiracy theorist reading that last sentence, that’s a joke. I already got my checks.

No, no, I’m sorry. I just can’t stop myself.

What can regular, everyday people do to avoid hoaxes and “fake news?”

My best tip that I can possible give readers is this: Disinformation and propaganda classically take hold by using emotional appeals. That is why what Cambridge Analytica did should be viewed through that lens.

One of the more sinister things that I have read that they did, in my opinion (among other things I’m sure that no one yet knows), was track people who were highly susceptible to authoritarianism, then flood them with violent imagery that was invisible to everyone else on social media, so that they were always in a state of fear and emotional arousal and highly susceptible to an authoritarian message.

That’s the type of person propaganda historically targets anyway — those who feel out of step with society and have strong tendencies toward authoritarianism — but now, groups like Cambridge Analytica are doing it faster and more surgically.

If you’re reading, viewing, or listening to a story that’s flooding you with high emotion, negative or positive — whether it’s fear, rage, schadenfreude, amusement at how gullible everyone else is — check your sources. You are being played. Do a quick search for the story, see if it has been debunked at minimum, and/or look for other sources and perspectives.

One of the most noxious things about disinformation and propaganda is that both weave some truth into their lies, which makes the lies much, much stronger.

Something I like to say about political leanings is that the right assumes it has the moral upper hand and the left assumes it has the intellectual upper hand — both are tremendous weaknesses that are easy to exploit.

Don’t let yourself be exploited. Be on guard. Don’t assume other people are sheep and don’t assume other people are morally bankrupt. Propaganda wants you to assume the worst about your fellow denizens; the people who push it out want the basic fabric of society destroyed.

It wants you hating your lovers, your neighbors, your family members, the guy at the store, the lady at the coffee shop. Propagandists want you distrusting each other, bickering, and unable to agree on the most basic facts — because then they can exploit those cracks further and consolidate power in the process.

Don’t let yourself be taken in.

The basic take-aways for the average person? Get your news from trusted sources, confirm it with a second source, check your own confirmation biases, and get familiar with reverse image search tools.

‘Top Boy’ Season 3 Now Has A Confirmed Premiere Date, Which Was Revealed With Some Help From Drake

(WARNING: Spoilers for Top Boy episode will be found below.)

In less than a month, a new season of Top Boy will be available for us to enjoy on Netflix. Earlier this year, the platform revealed that the show’s third season (fifth if you count Top Boy: Summerhouse) would premiere in September. Today, with help from Drake who is an executive producer on the show, Netflix revealed that Top Boy‘s third season will debut on September 7 in a new trailer for the series. This leaves less than a month before fans can enjoy the Top Boy experience for one last time.

Netflix renewed Top Boy for a third season shortly after the show’s second season came to an end in March 2022. That season concluded with a shocking ending as (SPOILER INCOMING): series favorite Jamie (played by Michael Ward) was ruthlessly killed by Gerard “Sully” Sullivan (played by Kane Robinson). Viewers expect Dushane Hill (played by Ashley Walters), who was close to Jamie, to retaliate against Sully in the new season and the new trailer seemed to hint at a face-off between Dushane and Sully. We also see Jamie’s little brother Stefan (played by Araloyin Oshunremi) put on Jamie’s beloved chain, which could mean that Stefan now plays to fill in Jamie’s role in more ways than one.

You can watch the new trailer for Top Boy above.

‘Top Boy’ returns to Netflix on September 7. Seasons one and two of ‘Top Boy’ are available now to stream on Netflix.

Elon Musk’s Plan To Just Show Up At Mark Zuckerberg’s Home Looking To Start A Fight Was Thwarted Because He Wasn’t There

On Sunday, Mark Zuckerberg did Elon Musk a huge favor: He dropped out of the cage fight in which he would have absolutely made hay out of the Twitter/X guy. Zuckerberg probably didn’t do it out of niceness; it sounds like he’d finally grown weary of Musk’s wishy-washy nonsense. But Musk is still game, so much so that he threatened — or joked, who knows with this guy — to visit him at home so he could probably have his butt handed to him.

In a series of exasperating posts on his own chaotic social media service, Musk claimed that he was going to use a test drive for his Tesla self-driving car to travel to Zuckerberg’s house. He added that if Zuckerberg “actually answers the door, the fight is on!”

Musk then further taunted his former opponent, writing, “Zuck thread coming soon about how he would of course love to fight anytime, but blah blah UFC something something.”

Alas, it was never meant to be. Zuckerberg’s team was forced to release a statement about the matter. “Mark is traveling right now and isn’t in Palo Alto,” it read. “Also, Mark takes this sport seriously and isn’t going to fight someone who randomly shows up at his house.”

Musk is infamous for dragging his feet on deals. It took him over half a year to finally buy Twitter, with multiple attempts to wiggle out of the purchase. He was doing much the same with his Zuckerberg fight, including claiming he needed surgery before getting into cage with an actual Jiu-Jitsu champ. It appeared to test Zuckerberg’s last nerve.

“I think we can all agree Elon isn’t serious and it’s time to move on,” he wrote on Sunday on his Twitter rival Threads. “If Elon ever gets serious about a real date and official event, he knows how to reach me. Otherwise, time to move on. I’m going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously.”

Anyway, it sounds like Musk still isn’t taking this seriously.

Noname ‘Is Not Going To Apologize’ For Keeping Jay Electronica’s Verse On ‘Sundial’ Despite An Earlier Backlash

Ahead of the release of her third studio album, Sundial, Noname once again stirred up some controversy when fans protested the presence of New Orleans rapper Jay Electronica as a featured artist on the song “Balloons” due to accusations of antisemitism. In response, Noname threatened to withhold the album, but instead decided to merely delay the single’s release, dropping it with the rest of the album on Friday. That didn’t stop the more motivated detractors from continuing to decry Electronica’s verse, but Noname responded on Instagram, saying she is “not going to apologize for a verse I didn’t write.”

Noname denied being antisemitic, instead declaring herself “against white supremacy,” and allowed that “if you feel I’m wrong for including, that’s fair.” However, she stood adamant that “your disappointment truly means absolutely nothing to me and I say that with love.”

noname instagram jay electronica
Instagram

Jay Electronica has drawn criticism for supposedly antisemitic beliefs due to his membership in the Nation Of Islam. He has also sampled sermons of the controversial leader Louis Farrakhan in his music and lyrically references a trope from the biblical book of Revelation, “the synagogue of Satan,” which had been used in the past to justify hatred of Jews.

Electronica’s “Balloons” verse touches on his association with Farrakhan lines like, “I’m on fire, I’m plugged in directly to Messiah / I run with the mighty ‘Khan as we expose the liars.” And while it seems that some fans would like Noname to distance herself from the elder rapper — who had an affair with Kate Emma Rothschild, who is Jewish, in the early 2010s — it doesn’t look like she’ll be caving to their demands anytime soon.

Norman Reedus Reunites With A ‘The Walking Dead’ Co-Star In An Upcoming Episode Of ‘Ride’

Soon, very soon, Norman Reedus is pretty much going to be taking over AMC Sunday night programming.

Not only will he be starring in the only solo The Walking Dead spinoff thus far, Daryl In Paris (I will never tire of that joke), but he will also star in Season 6 of his travel-reality show, Ride With Norman Reedus. The season premiere will star Norman being groovy alongside none other than Keanu Reeves. The two will ride across Utah (“through the otherworldy landscapes”) and perhaps get brunch together. Actually, that’s the theme of Colman Domingo’s food-reality show, Bottomless Brunch At Colman’s.

Why doesn’t Andrew Lincoln have his own show, Ride Anything But A Horse? I couldn’t answer that question, but I do know that another The Walking Dead star will join Reedus on AMC. That would be Josh McDermitt, a.k.a. “Eugene,” the guy who barely lasted five minutes at the start of the zombie apocalypse, yet he somehow made it through the series finale and was the last person that Rosita wanted to see while she was alive.

In the below clip (not the screencap, obv), Reedus and McDermitt are shown together at Talladega Superspeedway, where Reedus drives a pace car. Sounds about right.

This season debuts on September 10. Prepare to see Johnny Knoxville and Josh Holloway, among others. Here’s the very minimal series synopsis:

Join Walking Dead star and motorcycle enthusiast Norman Reedus on epic road trips around the world.  Each episode features Reedus and a riding companion – a fellow actor, musician, or friend, exploring local culture and seeking adventure on the road.

Ideally, there will be more motorcycle action than NASCAR action this season, but again and please, no Rick Grimes on a horse.

Ride With Norman Reedus returns on September 10.
