Trump Insists That He Was Being ‘Extremely Respectful’ Of Chris Christie With His ‘Fat Pig’ Remarks

Donald Trump, who doesn’t believe in exercise because he thinks a person is born with a “finite amount” of energy and claims to know the McDonald’s menu better than the people who work there, called Chris Christie a “fat pig” during a rally in New Hampshire on Tuesday.

“He’s eating right now, he can’t be bothered,” the former president joked about his GOP rival from New Jersey. He then pointed to a person in the crowd and said, “Sir, please do not call him a fat pig. That’s very disrespectful. Don’t call him. See, I’m, I’m trying to be nice. Don’t call him a fat pig. You can’t, you can’t do that. So now, because you’re not allowed to do that, and therefore we’re not gonna do it, OK? We want to be very civil, right?”

Trump is now claiming he was actually “extremely respectful” of Christie because he was defending him from being called a “fat pig,” you see.

“I was extremely respectful of Sloppy Chris Christie today in New Hampshire,” he wrote on Truth Social following the rally. “During a speech in front of a large crowd of Patriots, somebody shouted out that ‘Chris Christie is a fat pig.’ Rather than acknowledging that, which many speakers would have done, I said, ‘No, No, he is not a fat pig.’ I’m sure Chris would have been very happy with my defense of him!”

Narrator voice: he wasn’t.

Selena Gomez Had A Special Moment With Her Sister And Got So Many Friendship Bracelets At Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’

Taylor Swift continued her The Eras Tour run at SoFi Stadium last night (August 8) and the stars were out: Celebrities like Emma Stone, Taylor Lautner, Austin Butler, Laura Dern, Adam Scott, and Jeff Goldblum were spotted at the concert. Selena Gomez was there, too, and she appeared to have a particularly great night.

One particularly touching video from the show shows Gomez and little sister Gracie sharing a warm hug. As Swift sang “Lover,” Gracie appeared to be overwhelmed with emotion and Gomez sung along with Swift.

Elsewhere, Gomez shared a photo of all the friendship bracelets she got from fellow Swifties at the concert, enough bracelets to cover about half of her forearm. “Thank you to the fans that traded with me,” she wrote on her Instagram Story.

Gracie has proven herself to be a major Swiftie, and luckily for her, her big sister is actually pals with Swift. At an Eras Tour show in April, Gracie and Swift had a gift exchange during the show, with Gracie receiving a hat in return for a friendship bracelet. Upon the release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), Gracie went as far as to dye her hair purple, as Gomez documented in a video.

The Lesson Of ‘Barbie’ And ‘Oppenheimer’ Is There Are No Lessons

There are a lot of people talking about lessons lately when it comes to movies. Specifically, what we’ve seen from the combined box office strength of both Barbie (a movie that’s now made over a billion dollars) and Oppenheimer. There are the right lessons. Oh, then there are those wrong lessons. And who or what is going to learn a lesson. And if it will be one of those aforementioned right lessons or wrong lessons. Lessons! Wading through all the lessons, the conventional wisdom of “right lessons” seems to be somewhere along the side of more original films by great filmmakers. And, I guess, technically, those labels could be used for both Barbie and Oppenheimer, though, you know, Barbie isn’t exactly a brand new character but, for the sake of all this, sure. The wrong lessons seem to fall into the category of making clones of both movies or more sequels and doubling down on IP. Though, the more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that if there’s any lesson to be taken from the success of both Barbie and Oppenheimer, it’s that there is no lesson.

Last week I saw Meg 2: The Trench at a theater on the Lower East Side that I had only been to once before in my life. (But one I’ll never forget: Seeing an early screening of A Quiet Place Part II there on March 5, 2020. The next movie I’d see in a theater of any kind would be May 6, 2021.) As I was in the lobby, waiting to see Jason Statham do battle with a massive prehistoric shark (again), a woman came into the theater by herself wearing a bedazzled “Barbenheimer” t-shirt. She stopped near a Barbie poster, took a selfie, then went on her way. For whatever reason, this knocked me out of my “movie bubble” a bit. No matter what profession you’re in, when it comes to something that involves that profession, you’re only going to come to think of it in terms from that profession. That it must be something that can be controlled or harnessed by the forces of the companies that make this product. That customers for this product are telling something to those companies with their wallets. But, what if they’re not? I started thinking about this from outside the movie bubble.

Remember being “Iced”? If you don’t remember (oh, and lucky you, by the way), back in 2010, basically on command, someone would hand an unsuspecting person a Smirnoff Ice. The person now in possession of the Smirnoff Ice had to kneel and drink the whole thing. Pictures and videos of someone being iced would then be posted on social media. This caused a big spike in people buying Smirnoff Ice. This is what’s happening with Barbie and Oppenheimer. It’s become a cool thing to do on social media and it just happens, this time, to involve movies. Sometimes it does! Like when people started dressing up in suits to see Minions: The Rise of Gru. But it’s too unpredictable and almost impossible to replicate. It’s like trying to predict the phenomenon of planking. (Ken would no doubt be good at planking. And Icing, actually.) Or when people were dumping buckets of cold water over their heads for charity. Chasing trends rarely works out.

I’m sure every liquor company had meetings on how they could replicate “being iced.” I can see, say, a suit at Mike’s Hard Lemonade being like, “Hey, what if instead of being Iced, we tell people they should be Miked instead!” And I’m sure this was met with a lot of pleased executives who all went to work on this project that of course never happened. I promise every nonprofit had meetings about how they, too, could create their own version of the ice bucket challenge. “Wouldn’t it be great if our charity went viral?” Yes, that certainly would be great. But it didn’t happen. And the thing is, most people who work at studios know this. They know the combination of these two movies became a social media sensation and there’s no real way to replicate that. But that doesn’t mean they won’t get orders from some executive who doesn’t understand the randomness of the trends that become popular on social media. Someone, right now, is being told, “Make it happen again” fully knowing that it’s impossible. Like videos of the Harlem Shake, people will eventually find something new. There will be no “Strays Turismo” coming later this month.

Have you ever had a tweet (I’m sorry, an X) in mind you just know will take off, but then you post it (“that’s gold!”) and it gets maybe 15 likes and dies a humiliating death, while something fairly benign that you post later actually does go viral? (To this day, one of my most popular tweets was a picture of a Han Solo bookmark I got off eBay, mailed inside a DVD case for Halle Berry’s Catwoman. No clue why.) My point is that what’s happening right now is almost impossible to actually manufacture. And that’s not to even imply either of these movies wouldn’t have done well on their own without the added plus of becoming a social media phenomenon. And both of these movies being actually good and getting great reviews probably did help extend what’s happening. But people who never go to the movies are going to the movies right now because they want to be part of an online event. With this specific phenomenon, there really aren’t any lessons. It’s like trying to explain why planking was such a huge deal that it became an entire cold open for an episode of The Office. If you love that people are going back to theaters in droves to see Barbie and Oppenheimer, just be happy this time it doesn’t involve having to chug a bottle of a citrus-flavored malt beverage.

Tory Lanez Spoke About Bonding With ‘Friend’ Megan Thee Stallion Before Being Sentenced To Prison For Shooting Her

After years in limbo, the Tory Lanez/Megan Thee Stallion situation has finally reached a resolution: Yesterday (August 8), Lanez was sentenced to ten years in prison for shooting Meg. Before the sentence was handed down, though, Lanez spoke in court.

Meghann Cuniff, a legal affairs journalist who has been closely covering the trial and sentencing, reported, “Lanez spoke for several minutes, asking [Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford] to not send him to prison. He called Megan ‘someone I still care for dearly to this day’ regardless of what she may think of him. He said ‘the victim’s my friend.’ He talked about bonding with her over the loss of their mothers. ‘We both lost our mothers. We would sit there and drink, and drink until we got numb,’ he said.”

TMZ also summarized what he said:

“Tory Lanez addressed the court before he was sentenced saying he wanted a chance, has a son that needs him and to better himself. He asked the judge to allow him the opportunity to prove himself and understood just how serious the charges were against him.

He also addressed the public’s views about him, saying he’s not a monster without sympathy or remorse … and apologized for his mistakes the night of the incident.

Tory said Megan Thee Stallion was a friend to him, and they both bonded over the fact they lost their mothers. Tory took full responsibility for his wrongs, and once again asked for a chance to prove he’d learned his lessons.”

Megan Thee Stallion is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Rihanna Cuddled With Her Son For Savage X Fenty’s Maternity Capsule, ‘Approved By Baby RZA’

In June, Vogue reported that Rihanna had stepped down as CEO of Savage X Fenty. But she’s still the boss. On Tuesday, August 8, the lingerie brand revealed a new line of maternity wear and marked the drop with photos of Rihanna cradling her son, RZA, whom she and ASAP Rocky welcomed together in May 2022.

“Not ur mama’s maternity bras…designed by @badgalriri, approved by baby RZA #SavageXMaternity,” reads the Instagram caption. The campaign was shot by Dennis Leupold.

According to Vogue, the capsule is meant “for moms and moms-to-be,” featuring three bralette styles and a graphic tee with sizes ranging from XXS to 4X and prices ranging from $35 to $60.

“The new maternity capsule is about bringing that confidence and comfort to moms at every stage of their journeys,” Rihanna told the publication. “I want to remind people that you can still channel sexiness and feel good while being a parent.”

Last month, Rihanna served — emphasis on served — as the face of Savage X Fenty’s Sheer X collection campaign, showing off her bare baby bump. She had confirmed her second pregnancy while performing the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show in February.

Rihanna and Rocky have been protective of their firstborn’s privacy. They only shared a TikTok showing the infant in December 2022 because they didn’t want paparazzi to show his face to the world for the first time without their permission. Paparazzi had been lurking around Rihanna, Rocky, and RZA’s cover shoot for British Vogue‘s March 2023 issue.

“It’s the thing you never want to happen,” Rihanna told the publication. “We get to decide as parents when and how we do that. End of story. Throw me to the wolves. Do what you want with me. But he doesn’t have a say in any of this. We’ve been protecting him thus far and you don’t have any consent to be posting photos or selling photos of my child, a minor. Get the hell out of here with that.”

Julio Rodriguez Tricked Everyone Pretending He Missed The Ball After Robbing A Fernando Tatis Jr. Home Run

There are few things you can do in sports that’s cooler than robbing a home run, but on Tuesday night Mariners star center fielder Julio Rodriguez managed to make an already incredibly cool act even better when he tricked the entire stadium into thinking he had missed the ball.

After Fernando Tatis Jr. smoked a ball to center field, Rodriguez went over the wall to try and catch it, but when he came back he had his glove closed looking dejected. However, as he strode back towards the field, he picked his glove up and opened it, with a big grin coming across his face, revealing the baseball.

It’s an incredible bit of showmanship from Rodriguez, and I really want to know if he’s thought about doing this the next time he robs someone or if this was spur of the moment. Either way it’s incredible, but if it’s the latter it’s really an amazing job of playing off the natural excitement that comes from making that kind of play. The best part is him tricking his own pitcher into thinking he just gave up a home run, while also forcing Tatis to do like half of his home run trot before taking the long walk back to the dugout.

Chris Christie Told Trump To Say His Weight Jokes ‘To My Face’ By Actually Attending The GOP Debates

Chris Christie has spent the last two months relentlessly hammering Donald Trump, his longtime pal, with whom he’s very much on the outs. Trump has responded with jokes about his weight. That’s what he did on Tuesday during a New Hampshire rally that was chaotic even for him. But the former New Jersey governor isn’t letting that one slide either.

During the rally, Trump made a reference to Christie, one of many, many people who once worked for him who now hates his guts. “He’s eating right now, he can’t be bothered,” Trump joked.

As the crowd reacted wildly, Trump pointed to one person and told them, “Sir, please do not call him a fat pig.” As the crowd laughed, he added, “That’s very disrespectful. Don’t call him. See, I’m, I’m trying to be nice. Don’t call him a fat pig. You can’t, you can’t do that. So now, because you’re not allowed to do that, and therefore we’re not gonna do it, ok? We want to be very civil, right?”

Later that day, Christie posted the video on Twitter alongside the caption, “If you had the guts you would show up to the debate and say it to my face.”

Trump has vowed not to take part in the GOP primary debates, ostensibly because he’s already killing it in the polls. Others have speculated it’s because he doesn’t to be called out by his rivals. Of course, pretty much none of his rivals have taken a hard stand against him aside from Christie. Even Mike Pence, Trump’s former veep, has kept his criticisms on the mild side, and the big guy almost got him killed.

It would be something, though, if Trump showed up and Christie spent the entire time railing on him. Perhaps having an old friend who knows you way too well basically call you a pussy on national television might make even him snap. But he’s not going to do that because Christie’s probably got his number.

Student cries happy tears after a teacher reminds him that test scores aren’t everything.

When you’re a kid, kind words from a caring adult can make such a lasting impression.

Schools can have so much at stake with their testing results, they often inadvertently transfer that pressure onto the students.

That’s exactly what happened to Indiana third-grader Rylan as he was gearing up for something most kids dread: standardized testing week.

His teacher, who has asked to remain anonymous, gave each of her students a letter and a cookie before the big test. The letter is touching, but it’s the video of Rylan’s reaction to it that really gets me (you’ll see that at the end).

Whether you think the amount of testing being done in public schools is great or if you wish it were reduced dramatically, one thing we can all probably agree on is that it’s important to not send kids the wrong message — that their entire worth is wrapped up in whatever score they get.

The need for kids to hear this stuff is real. School pressures are waaaayyy different from when most of us were kids.

I’ll never forget when I drove my daughter home after results came in from a three-day marathon of fifth-grade testing. Usually she was bubbly and happy on days like these because she often got the highest score in her class and was proud of herself — she worked hard and did her best to beat her own scores and loved feeling like it was paying off.

This time she was salty. Her friend had bested her, and though she congratulated her sincerely and effusively, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that her “winning” streak had been broken.

My daughter exercising her love of learning: on her way to Battle of the Books (L) and learning photography basics (R).

A lightbulb went off in my head. Her self-worth is all wrapped up in this, I realized. This is all she’s ever known as a measure of who she is and where she ranks.

I pulled the car over and we had an instant talk because it was that important. My speech went something like this:

“You know that if you never achieved another thing in your entire life, you would still be loved and valued in our family just for who you are, right? It’d be disappointing if you stopped trying to reach your potential, but even if you did, we’d still love you.
Who you are isn’t proven by your track record of achievements — it’s the moments when you’re sad but are kind to others anyway, when you have a good reason to be a jerk but you choose not to be, and it’s when no one is looking and you don’t have to be a good person but you are anyway.
You will achieve amazing things in your life, and I will always be happy for you when you do, but not because it’s proving anything about who you are. I already know who you are.”

I saw a lightbulb go off for her then too. I hope it was a pivotal moment in how she will orient herself when going after lofty goals throughout her life.

Here’s Rylan and his mom talking about what it meant to get his teacher’s letter.

Hearing and seeing Rylan’s face and his mother’s gratitude as they share the letter is all the proof we need — a little kindness can go a long way.

If you’re not completely sure a kid in your life totally knows how to separate their test scores from their self-worth, this is a great thing to share with them right now.

Harvard psychologist explains how to achieve happiness—and it’s actually simple

Anytime you look at the news, it’s about death, destruction, abductions, natural disasters…

That kind of thing can mess us up. It makes the world look scarier than it is. It’s like wearing the opposite of rose-colored glasses.

Feel like you’ve fallen into the Matrix yet?

It’s time to stop giving awfulness the power to bend our lens. Here’s how.

Shawn Achor studied happiness at Harvard.

When he tells people this, they say: “Shawn, why do you waste your time studying happiness at Harvard? Seriously, what does a Harvard student possibly have to be unhappy about?”

But the crazy truth is, Harvard kids are as unhappy as anyone else. What’s going on in your life — from health, to money, to relationships, to prestige — predicts only about 10% of your happiness.

So … if I had a million dollars … I wouldn’t be any happier?

Shawn’s work flips our understanding of happiness inside out.

You don’t get happy by achieving success. You achieve success by getting happy.

Dopamine, which your brain makes when you’re happy, has one important side effect: It makes you smarter. A positive brain is 31% more productive. It’s better at sales, faster and more accurate at diagnosing problems.

So how can you up your dopamine?

Take two minutes every day and do one of these things:

  1. Write down three new things that you’re grateful for.
  2. Journal about one positive experience you’ve had in the last 24 hours.
  3. Try meditation, to teach your brain to focus.
  4. Use the first email you write every day to praise or thank someone you know. Spread the happy.

And it wouldn’t hurt to disrupt the endless barrage of bad news by sharing this with your friends, right? Everyone needs a little more happiness.

Remember…

Watch Jesse Jackson get a bunch of kids to chant a ‘I Am Somebody’ on ‘Sesame Street’

Sesame Street is a national treasure.

I think we can all agree on that.

Sesame Street invented the idea that television could teach children, not just entertain them.

It taught kids letters and numbers and introduced them to talented and famous people, from Savion Glover to Kofi Annan.

But the curriculum on the Street was always bigger than counting and Weimaraners. From very early on, its creators showed the world as they dreamed it could be. Black people, white people, and furry blue monsters lived in the same neighborhood. At a time when people with Down Syndrome were regularly institutionalized, Jason Kingsley was a frequent guest. Moms breastfed their babies in public, and all anyone had to say about it was, “That’s nice.” The whole neighborhood knew enough sign language that they could talk with Linda. They welcomed a new neighbor with a song about how happy they were to have a new friend.

The most important message Sesame Street sent to its millions of young viewers was this: You matter. You are an important person. You are valuable.

In 1971, a young Jesse Jackson stood on the steps of 123 Sesame Street and got a bunch of kids to chant “I Am — Somebody,” a poem by civil rights activist Rev. William Holmes Borders Sr.

These kids chant a message that we should give to every kid on earth.

Did I say kid? I mean human.

I may be poor. But I am Somebody!
I may be young. But I am Somebody!
I may make a mistake. But I am Somebody!
I must be respected, protected, never rejected.
I am God’s child.
I am Somebody!

So say it loud. And pass it to someone who needs a reminder that they are Somebody.

P.S. Are you dying to learn a thousand wonderful facts about Sesame Street’s origin story? I highly recommend “Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street” by Michael Davis. I’ll never watch the show the same way again.
