Quavo Dedicates His New Album ‘Rocket Power’ To The Late Takeoff And Shows Growth In The Process

The RX is Uproxx Music’s stamp of approval for the best albums, songs, and music stories throughout the year. Inclusion in this category is the highest distinction we can bestow and signals the most important music being released throughout the year. The RX is the music you need, right now.

I guess this is the new normal. Migos, as a group, is definitely gone. The trio’s surviving members, Quavo and Offset, may have resolved whatever bad blood caused the split in the first place (or at least resolved to move forward in the wake of tragedy), but with Takeoff no longer available to offer the third dimension to their music, even a reunion between them just wouldn’t be the same. A few years ago, this might have spelled disaster for both Quavo and Offset as solo artists. This may be harsh, but Quavo’s 2018 solo debut Quavo Huncho just didn’t display the sort of depth to suggest that his artistic output would continue to match his personal charisma for very long.

But Quavo’s latest solo project, Rocket Power, showcases a tremendous amount of growth. Here, he sounds hungry and engaged again, and he has just enough to talk about outside his typical range of wealth and gang talk to carry the majority of the album’s 17 songs. Unfortunately, that “just enough” includes the recent violent death of his close friend, nephew, and bandmate, Takeoff. It feels vaguely icky to attribute his artistic evolution to personal trauma — something the journalism industry does way too much of to begin with, if you ask me — and yet, there are now undeniably added facets and shades to Quavo’s music that weren’t there before.

Of course, in the five years since Huncho, Quavo, like all of us, had a lot of time to sit around, and it could be that he just spent that time sharpening his craft. He also got into a high-profile relationship with a fellow rapper, Saweetie, as well as an equally public breakup. He has, in short, lived a bit, and I think that has always been the primary component of constructing a long-lasting and compelling catalog of albums. The other half of that is, of course, technique. Quavo always came in third among the Migos’ brotherhood in that respect, with Takeoff coming off more practiced, and Offset sounding more wise. The songs on Quavo’s debut just wound up sounding hollow by comparison, and it didn’t help that the album was weighed down by so many guest stars.

On Rocket Power, Quavo pares back the call list, restricting the invites to Atlanta natives. Future makes two appearances, as does the late Takeoff (on one song, together), while the incarcerated Young Thug reminds us why he has such a passionate following on “Focused.” Two younger artists, BabyDrill and the fortuitously named Hunxho, show up on “Stain,” reflecting Quavo’s willingness to pick up the torch once passed to him by Gucci Mane and mentor the next generation of his hometown’s rap talent. Otherwise, Quavo is the sole voice on Rocket Power, which puts greater pressure on him to actually hold the listener’s attention for almost the full 50 minutes. Miraculously, that’s what he does for much of the runtime, although the album is still somehow a hair too long, even clocking in at under an hour.

Quavo manages this feat by employing a new tool in his increasingly diverse kit: vulnerability. He’s always been a bit vague as a storyteller, more prone to setting up pristine tableaus from a rags-to-riches story, but on songs like “Mama Told Me,” he finally provides the connective tissue to fill in the blanks. On “Greatness,” he directly addresses the fate of his band and admits “I don’t got all the answers.” “Hold Me,” while unfolding an otherwise rote “gangsta’s pain” style meditation, lines like “lost my nephew to gunplay and smoke sh*t” lend the song an air of authenticity. It sucks that we can’t necessarily buy such expressions without seeing the physical and psychic damage for ourselves, but that’s what happens when they usually only warrant one or two songs and a couple of throwaway lines amid a non-stop ball-off.

The celebration songs, like “Turn Yo Clic Up” with Future and “Who Wit Me,” have the benefit of Quavo’s gift for writing quirky, inescapable hooks, but the songs worth returning to are the more reflective ones like “Rocket Power.” That certainly says something about when Quavo — or really, any rapper — is at his best. Flexing is fine, but the element that makes us fall in love with these artists, that makes them so intrinsic to the fabric of our everyday lives despite the differences in circumstances with the artists themselves, is their ability to tell us who they are. With Rocket Power, Quavo finally offers a glimpse of the man behind the ad-libs, and gives us more reason to follow along as he keeps Takeoff’s memory alive.

Rocket Power is out now via Quality Control Music / Motown Records.

Deflated Meatball Ron DeSantis Might Have Lost One Of His Biggest Donors To Chris Christie

As Ron DeSantis‘ campaign continues to lose momentum and the Florida governor gets dragged even further into a nasty fight with Disney, one of his major donors has reportedly started to back Chris Christie in the Republican primary.

The former New Jersey has consistently trailed behind in the polls and struggled to escape the single digits, but he has relentlessly hammered Donald Trump at every opportunity. DeSantis, on the other hand, has been more cautious about attacking Trump for fear of angering a MAGA base that will be crucial in the general election.

However, the Florida governor has failed to spark excitement on the campaign trail, and at least one of his biggest donors has started backing the more pugnacious Christie.

Via Tampa Bay Times:

A prominent Ron DeSantis donor wrote large checks to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s presidential campaign and a super PAC supporting Christie’s bid for the White House, campaign finance records show.

Paul Tudor Jones II, a billionaire hedge fund manager who lives in Palm Beach, donated $150,000 to a pro-Christie super PAC, Tell It Like It Is, on June 15. At the end of the month, he also gave the legal maximum of $6,600 to Christie’s campaign committee.

According to the Times, Jones “has been considered one of DeSantis’ deep-pocketed supporters” and donated $1 million to his 2020 gubernatorial campaign. Jones’ donations to Christie have not been disclosed until now, and it’s not exactly the type of news that DeSantis needs at the moment. The Florida governor is set to square off with Christie, a fiery former prosecutor, during the first GOP debate on Wednesday night.

If DeSantis comes out of the evening looking battered, it will not bode well for his campaign.

Fool Me Twice: Fyre Fest 2.0 Pre-Sale Tickets Are Reportedly Sold Out — Godspeed To Whoever Bought Them

In case you missed the disastrous experience the first time, it’s clear people still want to see what Fyre Fest was like — as Billy McFarland’s 2.0 return of the event allegedly sold-out of the pre-sale tickets almost instantly.

There’s still no lineup or no clear details about what Fyre Fest 2.0 will hold, but the “First 100” of the passes opened up to the public for $499, according to a new interview he did with TMZ.

“They sold out very very quickly,” he said.

For those who don’t remember, McFarland was recently released from prison after the failings of the fest’s first run. He also had to pay millions back to investors, after the original festival went horribly wrong. There were even viral scenes of those attending struggling on the island, which sparked a few documentaries.

This time, he has promised that it will take place somewhere in the Caribbean at the end of 2024. The rest of the Fyre Fest 2.0 tickets, if anyone was sad they didn’t get them the first time, will go back on sale at a later date. However, some of the higher ticket tiers reportedly reach above $7000.

McFarland has also teased that he has plans for a Broadway musical as well, so the general public should probably take his ideas as far-fetched by now.

So, if you feel like getting stranded at a festival with no performers and limited supplies just for a viral moment, definitely keep an eye out for the next Fyre Fest 2.0 ticket drop.

Selena Gomez Reacted To A ‘Scary’ AI Video Featuring A Mock Version Of Herself Singing To One Of Her Exes

Selena Gomez has finally reacted to an eerie video featuring simulated versions of her vocals. Even more strange is the fact that the simulation was singing along to a song by one of her exes.

In a video, which was posted long ago by a Turkish fan page for The Weeknd, his 2016 song “Starboy” plays. However, through artificial intelligence, it is a replicated version of Gomez’s vocals singing the song.

“House so empty, need a centerpiece / Twenty racks a table, cut from ebony / Cut that ivory into skinny pieces / Then she clean it with her face, man, I love my baby, ah / You talkin’ money, need a hearin’ aid / You talkin’ ’bout me, I don’t see the shade / Switch up my style, I take any lane / I switch up my cup, I kill any pain,” sings the AI version of Gomez.

Though Gomez and The Weeknd haven’t directly acknowledged each other since their 2017 break-up, even Gomez had to chime in on how terrifying AI has gotten.

She simply commented “Scary” on the video, fans were shocked that she even addressed it.

“no way she commented on a weeknd video,” commented one fan.

But lately, Gomez seems to be enjoying the single life. In fact, she has a new song appropriately titled “Single Soon” dropping this Friday.

Michael Jordan Texted Stephen A. Smith And Made The Case For Why Magic Johnson Is Better Than Steph Curry

Steph Curry made headlines earlier this week thanks to an appearance on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast, “Gil’s Arena.” After being asked if he’s the best point guard to ever play the game, Curry simply said yes, although he made sure to say that the other name in the conversation is Hall of Fame inductee Magic Johnson.

This sort of thing is almost always going to give First Take a few days worth of content, and on Wednesday, Stephen A. Smith and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo went back-and-forth with one another about this. Russo laid out his full case for why he thinks Curry is wrong, and instead, backs Johnson for this title.

Smith, meanwhile, threw a bit of a curveball: Instead of diving right into his answer (he picked Curry), he read a text message that he received at 5:54 a.m. on Wednesday. It laid out why Johnson is the answer, and after he finished, Smith revealed that he got this from Michael Jordan, who Smith claims explicitly requested that he would read the whole thing on the air.

“Good morning, sir,” Smith read. “Although greatest of anything is always a debate, I beg to differ on greatest point guard of all time, with what you said. Magic Johnson is easily the best point guard of all time. Steph Curry is very close, but not in front of Magic. You must define ‘point guard’ to really have a serious debate. Steph Curry is by far the best shooter of all time — yes, his movement has created many shots for his teammates, he’s a career 43 percent three-point shooter.

“But Magic Johnson invented the triple-double,” Smith continued. “Not true invented, but makes it more noticeable in terms of the impact on the game. It’s a point guard stat, to be honest. Magic was the best. We can go on, but I don’t want to take up too much of your time. I know you get the point. By the way — Magic has five NBA championships.”

It was at this point that Smith revealed the text came from Jordan.

“He asked me to read it on the air,” Smith said. “He said I’m not backing up for it, I’m tired of this argument about Magic Johnson not being the best point guard in the history of the game. He is the best point guard in the history of basketball. That is from Michael Jordan.”

Jordan has spoken reverentially about Johnson for decades now, as he idolized the former Lakers star during the early days of his basketball career. Their relationship, particularly during their time as teammates on the Dream Team, was brought up on a few occasions during The Last Dance. It’s hardly a shock that Jordan would take this stance, but for someone who doesn’t usually wade into these sorts of debates, it’s a pleasant surprise that he’d text Smith and lay out his pro-Magic case here.

Melissa Joan Hart’s ‘Worst Day’ Of Her Life Included Nearly Getting Fired From ‘Sabrina’ Over A Racy Photo Shoot

A lot of people say “this is the worst day of my life” but don’t mean it. Melissa Joan Hart truly meant it when she singled out the worst day of her life.

On a recent episode of the Pod Meets World podcast, hosted by Boy Meets World stars Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong, Joan Hart was shown a photo of herself with Britney Spears at the premiere of Drive Me Crazy in 1999. “If you look at my eyes [in the photo], I’d been crying all evening,” she said. In a 24-hour span, she broke up with her boyfriend, lost a role in Scary Movie (“I was supposed to be the opening, vivacious, big-breasted one that’s murdered or something in the beginning”), and learned that she might be fired from Sabrina the Teenage Witch after posing on the cover of Maxim.

“While I’m at the party,” she explained, “my lawyer shows up and goes, ‘You did a photo shoot for Maxim magazine?’ I’m like: ‘Yes, I did.’ They’re like: ‘Well, you’re being sued and fired from your show, so don’t talk to the press, don’t do anything.’ So I get a phone call on my cell phone from my mother, my producer, who was like, what did you do? And I was like, ‘I don’t know, whatever my publicist told me to do at the photo shoot. I did a photo shoot for Maxim!’ It’s Maxim, of course you’re gonna be in your underwear.”

She was accused of being in violation of her Archie Comics contract, which stated that she “would never play the character naked.” But Hart said they “had no ground to stand on,” and after penning an apology letter, she was in the clear.

The best part about the October 1999 cover isn’t the photo of Joan Hart (where’s Salem???). It’s the headline “EXPERT SEX!” with the subhead “order that replacement headboard today!” Maxim was never the same after Big Headboard pulled its funding.

You can listen to the episode below.

Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Boyfriend Lashed Out At Iowa State Fair Attendees As ‘Classless Trash’ For Giving Her The Finger

Another day, another person flipping Marjorie Taylor Greene the bird. This time around, the Georgia congresswoman who’s jockeying to become Donald Trump’s running mate was reportedly photobombed with middle fingers while attending the Iowa State Fair with her boyfriend, Right Side Broadcasting Network Director of Programming Brian Glenn.

Glenn caught the gesture while getting ready to share photos of him and Greene with the crowd, who he thought were all pro-Trump. However, he noticed the rude gesture in the background and lit up the attendees in a recent Instagram Story.

Via The Independent:

“These kids screamed ‘we love MAGA, Trump 2024’ […] They were so happy!” Mr Glenn wrote in a caption of the photo.

A number of viewers spotted a woman holding up her middle finger in the background while a man was sticking his tongue out and doing thumbs down.

“Then I noticed this AFTERWARDS,” Mr Glenn wrote in a caption as he zoomed in on the photobombers. “Classless trash.”

To the surprise of no one, the Iowa State Fair incident wasn’t the first time that someone has flipped off Greene. Back in June, she accidentally shared a video from a Georgia town hall where one of the constituents can clearly be seen giving her the middle finger. Greene posted the clip on Twitter under the impression that it was a warm reception. Not so much.

As for Glenn, he’s also been a source of controversy for the congresswoman. Like most far-right reactionaries, Greene has been drumming up panic over drag queen story hours, which spectacularly blew up in her face when Patriot Takes dug up an old clip of her boyfriend dressed in drag.

“I’m literally lol’ing,” Greene tweeted in response. “@brianglenntv dressed in drag for morning news in Dallas years ago reporting on an upcoming local theatre production and the morons over at Patriot Takes think this is an attack. Brian loves the throwback and is reposting. The left is so stupid.”

Lauren Boebert Is Rootin’ Tootin’ Outraged Over The ‘Absolutely Absurd’ Conditions Of Trump’s Bail In Georgia

“Quiet Republican Lady” Lauren Boebert must not have been thrilled to have posed for a photo op in Rico, Colorado mere hours before Trump was indicted for the fourth time under RICO. The MAGA congresswoman went on to attack the credibility of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, and this move got served right back to her. And with Trump apparently preparing to surrender himself for a mugshot on Thursday and claims that he will “proudly” do so.

Boebert, on the other hand, is steaming mad over the terms of Trump’s bail. Granted, she should probably be slightly pleased that he was granted bail because Willis must know that Trump will almost certainly violate these terms, but nonetheless, the rooter and tooter declared that these rules are “absolutely absurd” during an appearance on Real America’s Voice:

The truth is, they are not just going after President Trump, they are going after We The People, and we cannot allow this to continue… even to go so far as to say that he cannot post on social media? This is absolutely absurd, and I believe that’s probably in conjunction with his interview with Tucker Carlson that is scheduled during the Republican debate that’s going to dominate the airwaves, rather than giving highlight to a bunch of no-name candidates…

Meanwhile, we still do not know whether Boebert has absorbed the 98-page indictment of Trump’s charges in Georgia, but Boebert surely made up her mind whether she read that material or not. Also on Trump’s calendar: a high-rolling fundraiser for Rudy Giuliani. How many people will pay $100,000 per head to attend? We might soon find out.

The Weeknd Hilariously Regretted Letting A Fan Sing Into The Microphone During His Recent Show

The Weeknd is currently continuing his international stops of his After Hours ‘Til Dawn Tour. At a recent show, according to HipHopDX, the Canadian performer was singing “Out Of Time” when he decided to let a fan in the audience briefly take the reigns.

He passed the mic to a woman in the front row and instantly regretted it, as documented in a hilarious video. Her scream was so loud and wild singing along that The Weeknd made a telling face and then took the mic right back, moving instead further down the crowd.

Overall, though, he’s been having a pretty good tour. According to Live Nation UK, he “broke Wembley Stadium’s record for sales with their traditional concert set up with the stage at one end of the stadium with 87,000 tickets sold.”

Last month, The Weeknd also broke the attendance record during his two shows at London Stadium, which reportedly drew in 160,000 fans.

“It’s incredible to see the Weeknd hit this milestone less than halfway through his massive sold-out European run,” Live Nation’s touring president, Omar Al-joulani, praised. “This historic moment in London shows the global fan base he has cultivated over the years.”

Still, with all of those fans flooding to his concerts, something wild was bound to happen eventually.

Beyoncé Has A Special Request For Fans’ ‘Renaissance World Tour’ Outfits During Virgo Season

Beyoncé evidently has special plans for the end of the Renaissance World Tour. Over the course of the tour, the Queen Bey has provided specific instructions to the hive, including a request that they literally go mute following the lyric “everybody on mute” as she performs Renaissance cut “Energy.” But beginning tonight, and for the remainder of the tour, Beyoncé has issued a special request regarding fans’ outfits.

Last night (August 22), Beyoncé took to her Instagram story to ring in Virgo season, and make a simple ask to fans, as her birthday takes place during this month-long period.

She wrote:

“Virgo season is upon us. This tour has been such a joy and as we approach the last month, my birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23 — 9.22! We’ll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night, everybody mirroring each other’s joy. Virgo season together in the house of chrome.

See you there!

Youy B at RWT.”

In between the shows, Beyoncé will celebrate her birthday on September 4.

While the Beyhive isn’t sure what she has in store, or why she is instructing them to wear all silver, we are certainly happy to oblige.
