Sweet video shows dad get emotional after taking his 3-year-old to the dentist

Parenting can be a little stressful. There’s no checklist for how to do it perfectly.

As the father of two young daughters, Doyin Richards has a lot of experience in that department. Like most parents, he hopes he’s doing it right. And like most parents, he has a little voice in his head that sometimes makes him second-guess his choices.

What if he’s doing it wrong?

On his 3-year-old daughter’s first trip to the dentist, Doyin was pretty worried she would freak out about the treatment. Of course, it turns out that the only person who lost their composure that day was him — when he realized she was totally fine and able to handle things herself.

Which made him realize that despite all his fears, he might actually be OK at this whole dad thing.

Watch Doyin try to hold it together while his daughter is totally chill at the dentist in this episode of “What Dads Do”:

Experts plead with parents to stop cracking eggs on their toddlers’ heads. No, really.

There are plenty of viral videos involving children that are perfectly harmless. Kids are naturally hilarious, and it’s not unusual for parents to capture their wee ones saying or doing something adorably funny.

At Upworthy, we often share cute viral kid videos, like the Italian preschooler who gesticulates like an old Sicilian grampa or the 4-year-old snowboarder in a dinosaur suit or the 3-year-old with incredible moves dancing alongside choreographed dancers. These are kiddos just doing what they do—genuine, wholesome kid moments caught on video.

Sometimes we share viral kid videos that are clearly set up, often with some kind of a positive parenting lesson included. But such videos are a far cry from a viral TikTok trend that involves parents cracking eggs on their children’s heads and recording their reactions.

The “egg crack challenge” involves parents cooking with their little ones—almost always a fun activity for kids—but when it comes time to break open an egg, the parent unexpectedly cracks it on the child’s head instead of the side of the bowl. The child’s stunned/confused/nervous reactions sometimes result in crying, sometimes laughter, and the unpredictable nature of it is what seems to be entertaining people.

But it’s not a harmless “prank”—not when it’s done to a small child who doesn’t understand what’s happening.

I’m not going to share any of the videos here because the whole point is to rack up views and I don’t want to contribute to the problem. But let’s look at this trend from the perspective of a little kid for a moment. You’re just learning about the world, and realizing it can be a scary and unpredictable place sometimes. Your place of safety and security is your home with your parents who provide safety and protection. You’re not sure what you can rely on out there, but your parents are your source of stability and security.

You’ve observed your parents cooking, so you kind of know what to expect. You use a cup to measure. You use a spoon to stir. You crack and open eggs before they go into the bowl.

You’ve never seen someone crack an egg on someone’s head. You’ve been taught that hitting someone, especially on the head, with or without an object is wrong. How do you make sense of your parent suddenly turning and hitting you on the head with an egg in the middle of cooking?

Children don’t process things the way adults do, but even most adults would immediately be like “WTF?!” if someone suddenly used their head for an egg-cracking surface. For a young child, it’s not just a WTF moment—it’s a message: “The thing I thought was predictable actually isn’t. The person I thought was reliable actually isn’t. The rules I was taught don’t always apply.”

It’s foundational-level confusing and could potentially mess with a child’s sense of trust. All for some internet likes.

Dan Wuori, Ph.D., Senior Director of Early Learning at the Hunt Institute, shared some thoughts on this and other potentially damaging parent “challenges,” such as inviting a kindergartener to meet their teacher virtually and having a scary-looking person on the screen.

“The years of early childhood are a time during which trust and attachment are (ideally) formed,” Wuori wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “With love, attention, and responsive caregiving, young children learn that their world is safe. They develop self-worth and self-esteem. These are prerequisites to both learning and healthy development. But the key to developing trust is consistency.”

“And the behaviors in these videos—even if rare and anomalous—serve only to undermine healthy attachment between parent and child,” he added. “They provide children with data points that suggest their parents can be unexpectedly and arbitrarily cruel. They are a violation of hard-earned trust.

“Some will argue that these are just jokes in good fun. They aren’t. They are the deliberate infliction of trauma, however brief, for the amusement of strangers. It should go without saying that this isn’t good for children.”

Pediatric occupational therapist Amanda Mathers shared a TikTok of her own explaining why the trend isn’t a good idea from a child development standpoint.

“You are teaching them that hitting someone in the head, hard, with an object, is acceptable and funny,” she said.

@yourpediatricot

I know as parents you never want to harm your child. This post is meant to educate, for wny parwnts who were wanting to try this, or tor parents who already did this rrend and fan go back wnd have a conversation with their child about what happened. ••• Toddlers brains at this age don’t yet fully comprehend jokes like this and although they may laugh… their brain is thinking “WHAT THE HECK?!” ••• Skip this trend parents, it’ll save you in the long run 🤍 #eggcrackchallenge #eggcrackprank #eggcrackreaction #emotionalintelligence #raisingconfidentchildren #raisingkids #donttrythisathome #pediatricot

She even went so far as to call it bullying, which is a solid point when you consider that some of these videos include children crying in embarrassment, pain or confusion and their parent laughing in their faces. Some might think they’re teaching kids about joking around and being silly, but this isn’t a healthy way to teach that. It’s cruel.

Parents in these videos may not realize how the thing they see as fun might be harmful, which is why it’s good to try to see it from a child’s perspective. But a good rule to follow in general is not to purposefully create an emotional reaction in a child as a way to go viral on social media. Stick to capturing kids just being their normal, adorable, hilarious selves—there’s plenty of entertainment in that.

Michelle Wolf Comes Out As ‘Insufferable’ In Her New Netflix Special ‘Michelle Wolf: It’s Great To Be Here’

Michelle Wolf, also known as the woman who famously roasted Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ eye makeup at the 2018 White House Correspondents dinner, is back for another round of hard-hitting quips and jokey shenanigans with an upcoming Netflix special titled Michelle Wolf: It’s Great To Be Here.

It’s Great To Be Here will feature three half-hour-long episodes, because who actually sits down for a 90-minute special anymore? What are we, made of time? Wolf will touch on hot-button topics, including harassment, dating, and, of course, various political shenanigans. Sarah Huckabee should be warned (and get those makeup tutorials ready).

The comedian previously dropped another special, Michelle Wolf: Joke Show, in 2019, and for a woman with the last name “Wolf” she sure does love making jokes about animals. Before her stand-up stint and HBO special (which earned her an Emmy nom), Wolf was a correspondent on The Daily Show and a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

Wolf’s Netflix talk show The Break With Michelle Wolf was tragically canceled in 2019 after just 10 episodes, but maybe the world just wasn’t ready for Yogurt for Men yet. The time is now!

The three-episode special will drop on Tuesday, September 12th, just ahead of her national tour, aptly titled the Great To Be Here tour. Check out the trailer above.

Ron DeSantis Is Sticking By His ‘Listless Vessels’ Diss Of MAGA Lawmakers, Thank You Very Much

Ron DeSantis has not been having a good time luring Republicans away from Donald Trump. He’s not making his job any better. Last week the Florida governor sat down for an interview with Florida Standard, in which he laid into the MAGA crowd. His team later claimed that he really meant Trumpist lawmakers who’ve called him “RINO,” not the entire movement or anyone who digs Trump. Even that could be seen as risky for someone trying to be the party’s presidential nominee, but credit where it’s due, he’s sticking by his guns.

As per The New York Times, the pudding guy went on Fox News, where he was asked about why he called MAGA congressfolk “listless vessels” who “follow whatever happens to come down the pike on Truth Social every morning.” He clarified that he was speaking about a narrow — if powerful — portion of today’s GOP.

“The people in Congress that I was referring to, that have attacked me and tried to say somehow that I was a RINO, they’re putting entertainment and personality over principle,” DeSantis said. “Our voters want us to stand on principle and fight for them.”

DeSantis’ “listless vessel” bit went viral over the weekend, prompting some to compare it to Hillary Clinton’s “basket of deplorable” line to describe die hard Trump supporters.

Even if DeSantis’ attempts to refine those comments work on voters, he’s still likely alienated the people he was addressing, who have worked tirelessly at their jobs at being complete nuisances who spend their hours on the clock hatching harebrained schemes to rescue their favorite former president from potential jailtime. That said, it’s not like he has much of a chance with that faction anyway.

‘Kendall Roy Parts Ways With Scooter Braun’: The Jokes Are Flying After Multiple Artists Parted Ways With Manager/Taylor Swift-Nemesis Scooter Braun

What’s going on with Scooter Braun? Over the last few days the big time music manager has been losing clients left and right. Reportedly gone from his rolodex are Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, and Idina Menzel. Rumors had it Justin Bieber was vamoosing, too, but both parties have shot that one down (for now). Braun has claimed it’s really just him cutting back on the day-to-day of managing so he can spend more time as CEO of HYBE America. Others have suggested there’s a reason he’s switching jobs. Whatever the case, it’s inspired some hilarious memes on that joint previously called Twitter.

The fun seemed to begin after reports of Menzel’s departure dropped.

Soon people were joking that fictional musicians, from movies and TV, were joining the mass exodus from Braun’s services.

Other characters, however, weren’t leaving but joining Braun’s team.

Some chose real people who were fictionally teaming with Braun.

Some thought outside the box, choosing inanimate objects.

Amidst all the news, Taylor Swift — whose back catalog was infamously bought and sold off by Braun, prompting her to re-record them all — came up.

Everyone was having a good time, and then Braun himself had to get in on the joke.

But it was a good run for a good meme.

The NBPA Will File A Grievance Over James Harden Getting Fined $100,000

The National Basketball Player’s Association is getting involved in the ongoing saga involving James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers. Earlier in the day on Tuesday, the NBA announced that Harden would receive a fine of $100,000 following an investigation into comments Harden made regarding his desire for a trade — in a statement, the league said the fine revolved around “public comments on August 14 and 17 indicating that he would not perform the services called for under his player contract unless traded to another team.”

Now, the NBPA released a statement of its own indicating that it believes the NBA went too far in trying to reprimand Harden.

“We respectfully disagree with the league’s decision to discipline James Harden for recent comments he made, which we believe do not violate the rule against public trade demands,” the NBPA said, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. “We intend to file a grievance and have the matter heard by our Arbitrator.”

Wojnarowski reported earlier in the day that the league believed Harden’s comments did, indeed, cross a line regarding public trade demands. Harden previously called Morey a liar while speaking to a attendees of a basketball camp, then went on to proclaim that he’d “never be part of an organization that he’s a part of.” A few days later, Harden expressed his belief that it was too late to mend fences with the Sixers. All of this came after the Sixers apparently ended their efforts to trade Harden, who requested a move earlier in the offseason.

Wendy’s New English Muffin Breakfast Sandwiches Just Absolutely Changed The Game

The sausage and egg McMuffin is widely considered the king of fast food breakfast sandwiches. It’s so good that almost every fast food brand has tried — and failed — to mimic its magic. It is simply McDonald’s greatest gift to fast food (aside from the fries, of course). So the idea that another brand could ever come along and make a better breakfast sandwich is hard to fathom. In fact, if you told me at the beginning of this year that it would ever happen, I’d have just laughed at you.

Enter Wendy’s, who today just dropped two new English Muffin Sandwiches at locations nationwide. The new sandwiches feature a light and fluffy muffin topped with browned butter and black pepper, a fresh cracked and fried egg, American cheese, and your choice of oven-baked applewood smoked bacon or a grilled sausage patty. Folks, believe me when I tell you this — Wendy’s has just dropped the two best breakfast sandwiches in all of fast food.

I know, I know, it’s incredibly easy to be charmed by something new, but trust me on this one, I’ve ranked breakfast sandwiches, I’ve blind taste tested them, I’m intimately familiar with just about every sandwich on the market. Wendy’s wins, hands down. Here is why:

Wendy’s Sausage, Egg, & Cheese Muffin

Breakfast

Thoughts and Tasting Notes:

Easily the best part of McDonald’s famous Sausage, Egg & Cheese McMuffin is that perfectly toasted English muffin. It’s craggy, airy, and remarkably textural. But when the best part of your sandwich is the bun… how good is your sandwich really? Beat for beat (aside from the muffin), Wendy’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese Muffin is an improvement over what you can get at McDonald’s.

The sausage patty is incredible, it’s tender with a great smokey flavor that has some mild sweetness to it, a heavy emphasis on pepper, and some herbal depth. The combination of fennel and thyme with the savory meat flavor is satisfying in itself, but the sandwich is further elevated by the fried egg that has a good amount of moisture and texture to it, the salty American cheese, and the complex nuttiness of the browned butter which adds some caramel sweetness to each bite.

The muffin is spongier and chewier than the McMuffin, and while I don’t like that quite as much, it helps the sandwich from coming reading dry. Overall, each bite is more addicting than the last. But what really surprises me is the bacon-topped version of the sandwich…

Wendy’s Bacon, Egg & Cheese Muffin

Thoughts and Tasting Notes:

When I ate the sausage-topped version of this sandwich, I was ready to crown a new king in the world of fast food breakfast sandwiches. I generally find sausage sandwiches more satisfying and savory than bacon sandwiches, so I assumed this sandwich was going to be a slightly less delicious version and even considered not reviewing it at all. I’m glad I did because this sandwich is even better.

There is slightly more emphasis on the non-meat ingredients here — Wendy’s bacon is thick but not as thick as a sausage patty — changing the flavor profile slightly, but that allows the flavor of the fried egg, savory brown butter, and salty cheese to really shine. This sandwich is also much smokier and less sweet than the sausage version and helps to add a better crunch and sense of texture, which counterbalances the spongey quality of the muffin.

Overall, the sandwich is very well-balanced. It’s meaty but doesn’t rely on its protein to dominate the flavor. Crunchy and textural, savory, buttery, and slightly sweet — can you tell that I dig this one?

The Bottom Line:

Whether you’re more down for sausage or bacon, one thing is for certain — both sandwiches offer a significantly better eating experience than the mighty McDonald’s McMuffin by focusing on great base ingredients. Wendy’s wears the crown as the new king of breakfast.

Lonzo Ball Told Stephen A. To ‘Stop Yapping’ In Video Disproving Smith’s Claim It’s Hard For Him To Stand Up

Lonzo Ball will spend the 2023-24 season continuing his rehabilitation from a torn meniscus back in January 2022, as he will miss a second consecutive full season with the Bulls due to setbacks in his recovery.

Recently, Ball opened up about feeling bad for the Bulls, noting he felt they’d built a “perfect team” around him to maximize his unique talents, as evidenced by their hot streak to start the 2021-22 season that had them in first in the East prior to his injury. Since, the Bulls have been unable to replace Ball and have struggled, and will enter this season once again facing an uphill climb to crack the East playoff race without Ball’s services.

We have rarely gotten positive updates about Lonzo’s knee over the past two years, and on Tuesday, Stephen A. Smith stated on First Take that he’s heard it’s difficult for Lonzo to even stand up after he’s been sitting down.

There were reports a year ago that Ball still experienced discomfort going up and down stairs, so this certainly didn’t seem out of the realm of possibility, but it did paint a picture of a player that was unlikely to return to the floor. Ball, however, has been emphatic that he’ll make a return to the court one day in the future, and didn’t appreciate this latest update from Smith that he wanted to prove was false. Ball posted a video to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon showing himself standing up and sitting down multiple times using only his injured left leg, while telling Smith to check his sources and to “stop yapping.”

This is now back-to-back days where an athlete has gone on Twitter to shut down a Stephen A. report, as Stefon Diggs did the same on Monday after Smith said he wants out of Buffalo. For Ball, this seems to have been almost a cathartic post to make because he hasn’t really had much positive news to share with the world about his knee, but being able to show himself doing single leg squats in and out of a chair represents the most positive thing we’ve seen from Ball in more than a year. He might be a ways away from being back on the court, but it certainly seems as though his latest surgery has cleared up the lingering pain he’s dealt with and, hopefully, that’s the first step towards him making a full recovery, even if a delayed one.
