What parents can do to prepare for if their teens express suicidal thoughts

Editor’s Note: This story discusses suicide. If you are having thoughts about taking your own life, or know of anyone who is in need of help, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a United States-based suicide prevention network of over 200+ crisis centers that provides 24/7 service via a toll-free hotline with the number 9-8-8. It is available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.

A teen expressing suicidal thoughts can be terrifying as a parent. There’s not really a handbook for it and sometimes you’re not even the first to know. Teens are at a unique stage in their lives, stuck between adulthood and childhood. They’re trying to figure out their place in the world while navigating massive hormonal changes, more challenging work at school, social group pressures, and adults constantly asking what their future plans are.

When you add in the extra layer of sexual orientation outside of heterosexual norms, teens can feel immense pressure they’re not fully equipped to handle on their own. But because of their stage of development, secrecy is fairly common, even if you have a close relationship with your teens.

So this can sometimes mean that by the time they’re coming to their parent with a problem, they’ve exhausted all of the resources they have. But there are things parents can do in an attempt to help their teens prepare for suicidal thoughts if they pop up.

Everything a parent can do essentially revolves around having open, honest conversations about suicidal thoughts. Parents often try to steer their kids clear of upsetting information or anything that may seem like it’s encouraging an undesirable behavior. But kids are smart and we have to trust them to make the choices right for them based off of the information they have.

Normalizing suicidal ideation as something that some people have can help kids feel comfortable to open up with their parents when they experience them. Passive suicidal ideation is something that many people experience, which can be things like hoping you don’t wake up in the morning or wanting a tragic accident to occur. But they can also look like someone saying they don’t want to be here anymore or that life would be easier without them.

Parents should have a firm handle on when suicidal thoughts are passive and when they’re active so they can impart that knowledge on their children. Passive suicidal thoughts doesn’t mean hospitalization, in most cases it means the person would benefit from therapy as there is likely some underlying mental health condition.

Active suicidal ideation is when a plan is in place. This doesn’t mean it’s months out. A plan for suicide can come together quickly and impulsively, especially if there’s a inciting event like failing an important test or someone threatening to send a teen’s inappropriate pictures to everyone on Snapchat. Sextortion has claimed the lives of several teenage boys over the past few years, many of them popular, student athletes with good grades and a strong friend group.

Talking about suicidal thoughts and what to do in the event of having them can help save their lives. Parents can also reassure their children that there is nothing they can do that would make you stop loving them. Bring sexting out on the table to let them know people make mistakes and that you’ll always be a safe person to come to if someone is threatening to expose inappropriate pictures. No judgement.

Does that mean you need to agree with them sending inappropriate photos? No. But when they’re coming to you in a bind, judgement needs to sit in the backseat until your child is safe. The lesson is already learned and nothing you do or say will drive it home more.

Outside of talking about it openly, discussing the different types of ideation and reassurance that you’re a safe person if something big happens-parents should make sure their kids store crisis numbers in their phones. Because they’re teens, they don’t always come to parents first, so parents making sure kids have crisis numbers stored is that extra layer of knowledge that it’s okay to seek help.

Storing multiple options can be beneficial. 988 is great for crisis phone calls, 741741 is a crisis text line, 1-866-488-7386 is a crisis line for LGBTQ youth and 678-678 is their text option. Even if you don’t think your child is a member of the LGBTQ community, it’s still beneficial for them to have access to this number whether it benefits them directly one day or if they pass it along to a friend.

If there’s ever a time when your child comes to you with an active plan for suicide, you can take them to the nearest emergency department or crisis center. Many psychiatric hospitals will assess people without them being assessed at the emergency department first if they have a bed available, which you can find out by calling ahead. If the crisis is acute and it’s not safe to transport your child, you can call 988 and they will work with local emergency services to pick them up.

Talking to teens about suicide isn’t a fun conversation but it has to be had. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among people 10-24 years olds, having the conversation and checking in frequently is imperative to ensure teens have the knowledge to keep them earth side as long as possible.

Drew Barrymore draws controversy after bringing her talk show back during industry strike

Drew Barrymore’s signature brand of empathy has come into question for the 11,000 members of the Writer’s Guild of America currently striking after she resumed production for her talk show.

Both the Writer’s Guild and the Screen Actor Guild, otherwise known as SAG-Aftra, have yet to reach fair negotiations with major studios and streaming companies like Disney and Netflix, and because of that, productions have come to a halt. And productions that continue to work while struck (with a few specific exceptions) are considering violating the strike rules, aka “crossing the line.”

And yet, Barrymore doubled down on her decision, writing on Instagram that she previously “made a choice to walk away from the MTV, film and television awards because I was the host and it had a direct conflict with what the strike was dealing with which was studios, streamers, film, and television.”

“To be clear, our talk show actually wrapped on April 20th so we never had to shut down the show,” she continued. “However, I am also making the choice to come back for the first time in this strike for our show, that may have my name on it but this is bigger than just me.”

In her statement, Barrymore argued that “we are in compliance with not discussing or promoting film and television that is struck of any kind. We launched live in a global pandemic,” suggesting that she was within strike regulations.

Unfortunately, it’s a little more complicated than that. Luckily TV writer David Slack, who’s worked on shows like “Law & Order” and “Magnum P.I.” explained it all in a very concise thread on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In the thread, Slack explained that Barrymore’s show is technically covered under both unions—SAG and the WGA. So while, yes, under SAG’s current contract, as long as she doesn’t promote struck shows, there’s no violation…the same cannot be said for her show under its WGA contract.

“While Drew Barrymore is not a WGA member, her show employs WGA writers who are currently out on strike,” he wrote, noting that they create those popular “opening monologues, jokes, and interviews” that seem so spontaneous.

By going back on the air without her writers, Drew Barrymore is 100% ensuring that *someone* — either herself, one of her non-writing producers, or all of the above — will be doing the writing work that WGA writers normally do.

In other words…the decision is “absolutely” violating the WGA’s strike rules, according to Slack.

It’s hard to tell if Barrymore’s choice to continue prediction is a result of misinformation (it’s near impossible to be 100% literate for just one of the two unions, let alone both) or if this is intentional for some reason. Either way, it certainly has ruffled feathers.

And it’s hard to not wonder if there was a better way to go about resuming production in a way that actually does support the writers.

By comparison, during the 2007 Writers Strike, which lasted 100 days, Conan O’Brien also continued to host his show. However, O’Brien used each episode to highlight how necessary writers with absolutely absurd and mundane shenanigans, like the lackadaisical tribute to his facial hair, and the ever famous attempt at spinning his wedding ring for 47 seconds.

Of course, as Slack pointed out, even that wouldn’t fly under the current contract. Hence why Barrymore’s show will be having picketers outside until the foreseeable future.

It almost goes without saying that it’s oversights like this—in addition to other sins—that have left the writers feeling the need to advocate for themselves. But it’s a big reminder that virtually anything you see on a television program that you enjoy, is because a writer provided you a service. And they deserve compensation for it.

NSYNC Reunited For The First Time In A Decade At The 2023 MTV VMAs

Millennials got their whole lives tonight thanks to the 2023 MTV VMAs, which saw the phenomenal 2000s-era boy band NSYNC reunite for the first time in over a decade. The fabulous fivesome were introduced by VMAs host Nicki Minaj to present Taylor Swift a Best Pop Award for her song “Anti-Hero.” Swift seemed just as shocked as anyone to be receiving the Moon Man from Chris Kirkpatrick, JC Chasez, Justin Timberlake, Lance Bass, and Joey Fatone — especially all at once. “I’m having trouble pivoting from this to this,” she joked, gesturing at the pop heroes then at her award.

That wasn’t the only thing she got from them, either. “Thank you for the friendship bracelets,” she continued, referencing the popular trend, which has seen fans and others trading the bracelets at her concerts. Even NFL player Travis Kelce tried to shoot his shot, putting his phone number on a bracelet that he never actually got to give her. That didn’t stop him from eventually getting another opportunity, leading to the two stars “hanging out.” Fellow singer Halsey also claimed to have made no fewer than 50 of the bracelets to share. It looks like this is a trend that’s going to keep growing.

Cardi B And Megan Thee Stallion Brought Out A Tropical Revue For Their 2023 VMAs Performance Of ‘Bongos’

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion took inspiration from Copacabana-style revues for their performance of “Bongos” for the 2023 MTV VMAs. The set came in directly from commercial with nary an introduction in sight. However, the two feisty rappers didn’t really need one; Cardi and Meg wore matching blue and green bodysuits, surrounded by Carnival-themed dancers and palm trees, delivering a decidedly toned-down performance from their controversy-inducing “WAP” performances.

It’s not like they needed the controversy to fuel big streaming numbers for the dembow-influenced hit. After the success of “WAP,” the two rappers’ reunion was hotly anticipated by fans, and with Cardi spending over $2 million for the Malibu-shot music video, it’s already accumulated millions of views across platforms and will surely land somewhere in the top ten on next week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart.

After the song’s release, Megan praised Cardi for being consistently supportive over her troubled last couple of years. “This space that I’m in mentally, I’m not foolin’ with too many people that don’t give me good vibes, good energy,” she said. “I have creative boundaries. And Cardi is somebody that I want in my space, in my energy, so it’s so easy to work with her because she got the vibe, she got the energy, I want her in my space.”

Olivia Rodrigo Performed A Fiery Mash-Up Of ‘Vampire’ And ‘Get Him Back’ At The 2023 MTV VMAs

Olivia Rodrigo‘s sophomore album Guts just came out, and what better way to bring it to life than with an invigorating VMAs performance? She was the second performance of the night, following Lil Wayne.

In a pink two-piece outfit, she sang the first Guts single “Vampire,” an emotional ballad, while sitting by in grass by a set-up of a lake. As she gave a poignant performance, the pyrotechnics became concerning; a fake tree fell, the pop star was directed off the stage, and the curtain was drawn. However, don’t be fooled — it was just the dramatic segue into her bombastic rock-tinged anthem “Get Him Back.”

About “Vampire,” Rodrigo previously said, “I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me — almost like an out-of-body experience,” she said in a statement. “It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”

The ‘Drew Barrymore Show’ Mess Has Resulted In Her Being Removed As Host Of A Prestigious Awards Show

Since bowing three years ago, The Drew Barrymore Show has racked up a lot of goodwill. Its host could be described as “chaotic good,” her earnest, kooky enthusiasm resulting in both bizarre moments and surprisingly strong interviews. A lot of that enthusiasm has seeped out in the last two days after it was announced the show would be returning without its writers, effectively crossing the WGA picket line. The move has already resulted in some unpleasant theatrics. And now Barrymore herself is already seeing the consequences of her and her team’s actions.

Per Vulture, the actress-turned-morning talk show host was supposed to host the 74th National Book Awards. No more.

“In light of the announcement that The Drew Barrymore Show will resume production, the National Book Foundation has rescinded Ms. Barrymore’s invitation to host the 74th National Book Awards Ceremony,” the National Book Foundation announced in a tweet. “Our commitment is to ensure that the focus of the Awards remains on celebrating writers and books, and we are grateful to Ms. Barrymore and her team for their understanding in this situation.”

The ceremony is set to go down on November 15. Currently it’s unknown who will replace the person who dressed up as the villainous robot doll from M3GAN to terrorize the film’s human star.

Elon Musk Had A Disastrous Meeting With Rudy Giuliani Where He Realized He’s A Loon — Back In The Year 2000

People often talk about how far Rudy Giuliani, once “America’s Mayor,” has fallen. But what if he was always bad news? After all, Jan. 6 wasn’t the only time he whipped up a crowd into a violent mob. One of the stories in Walter Isaacson’s new bio of Elon Musk highlights a disastrous meeting the future Tesla/Space X/X guy had with Giuliani, which ended with him declaring him a weirdo. The meet-up didn’t happen a couple years ago. It happened in the year 2000.

The Daily Beast teased out a bit from Isaacson’s Elon Musk, in which his subject, then CEO of PayPal, went to New York to meet with Giuliani, hoping to hire him as a “political fixer.” Giualini, who was in his penultimate year as mayor of New York City and not long from becoming beloved for the way he handled the September 11 attacks, did not impress him.

“It was like walking into a mob scene,” said Michael Moritz, a PayPal investor who joined Musk on his trip. He said he was “was surrounded by goonish confidantes. He didn’t have any idea whatsoever about Silicon Valley, but he and his henchmen were eager to line their pockets.”

Giuliani, Moritz claims, demanded a 10 percent stake in PayPal, which obviously would have made him wealthy beyond his dreams. Judging from how he’s doing these days, that obviously didn’t happen. Instead, Musk saw right through him, saying, “This guy occupies a different planet.”

Perhaps one can imagine an alternate timeline in which Musk wasn’t quickly turned off by Giuliani’s chaotic energy, and the two became pals. Maybe Musk never would have been kicked out of PayPal, and never used the earnings he’d acquired there to form Space X. But a Giuliani-Musk team-up doesn’t sound much better than the crap timeline in which we’re all stuck.

Doja Cat Was Basically Topless For Her Spiderweb-Inspired 2023 MTV VMAs Look

The MTV VMAs are tonight and one of the most anticipated moments is Doja Cat’s performance. The star is still hyping up her forthcoming album Scarlet, whose infectious single “Paint The Town Red” became the first rap song of the year to take the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The “Demons” singer posted her revealing pink carpet look on Instagram. She’s draped in a spiderweb dress that lets everything hang out — no bra, no pasties. She’s also covered in glitter, truly glowing. She also shows off her tattoos this way, as well as eye-catching jewelry that climbs from her fingers up her wrist.

The look goes with the Scarlet album cover, which depicts two spiders. About the record, Doja said in an interview a few days ago, “One thing that I wanted to mention was that I have music that came out — these three songs came out, these were the first three songs I made during the period that I was making music,” she said. “And then there’s a second half where I went to Malibu and I made all this music in ten days. That half is very different from the first half.”

Scarlet is out 9/22 via RCA. Find more information here.
