It’s the side of extreme weight loss rarely seen, but that’s why it’s needed

Matt Diaz has worked extremely hard to lose 270 pounds over the past six years.

But his proudest moment came in March 2015 when he decided to film himself with his shirt off to prove an important point about body positivity and self-love.

Matt had lap-band surgery in 2009 at age 16.

Through the course of his weight-loss journey, Matt became passionate about promoting body positivity for people of all shapes and sizes.

weight-loss journey, obesity, social media

To stay motivated, he started sharing his journey on social media, posting before-and-after photos, answering questions and giving support to followers, and even sharing his meals and favorite workouts. Six years later, Matt is down over 270 pounds and is a very active voice in the online body-positivity movement.

But in all his years of sharing his story, the one thing he’s never done is showed what his body looks like after 200+ pounds of weight loss. So he uploaded the video above to show his followers his true self.

body image, viral videos, photos

selfies, shame, extra skin

self love, self care, self esteem

fear, public shaming, insecurity

Shortly after he posted the video online, originally to Tumblr, it quickly went viral and garnered thousands of shares and comments from people around the web. I was one of the thousands touched by the video, so I reached out to Matt to find out more about what motivated him and what he hopes others can take away from his story. Here’s what he had to say:

Why was it so important for you to post this video?

“I’m a really big advocate for self-love and body positivity. I think it’s important that we learn to love the bodies we’re in, even if we don’t necessarily like every little thing about them. However, in the time I’d been writing and talking about it, I’d never actually shown my excess skin to anyone. It felt dishonest somehow, to others and to myself. I couldn’t tell others that I wanted them to love themselves and keep myself hidden away and ashamed of my skin.”

“I know what it feels like to hate your body, and to be depressed about it, and I never want anyone to feel that way again. So, if making myself vulnerable can help one person, why not?”
— Matt Diaz

What’s the response been like? Anything particularly unexpected?

“I think that putting any opinion on the Internet will garner a certain amount of negativity and cynicism, but I haven’t seen anything like that at all. I’ve read every comment and message since the video has gone up, literally thousands, and they’re all so thoughtful.

A really surprising side-effect were the number of transgender people who’ve thanked me saying that they understood my struggle, even though their body-related insecurity grew from different roots. I’d never even begun to [think] of what that must be like, and the fact that my message could help even though my problems began somewhere else is really incredible.”

What advice or words of encouragement do you have for someone who’s struggling to love their body?

“I know it’s difficult, especially when you’re starting out. I want you to remember that you are not the problem, certain aspects of society are the problem. You’ll constantly be told that you’re too heavy or too tall to be attractive, or you’re not masculine or feminine enough, or that your skin isn’t the right tone or your hair isn’t the right color, and these people are always always always wrong.

Luckily, we’re slowly starting to see these ideas get phased out by modernity. Plus-sized, un-retouched models are getting more attention in major brands, more attention is being put on the alternative scene for high fashion, it’s becoming clear that these negative ideas are not going to last, though it’s going to take a while.”

Understand that to love yourself is to contest the negative things that were put into your head. Every smile, tattoo, bathing suit, and crop top is a small revolution. Tell yourself you’re beautiful every day, and I promise you will be.
— Matt Diaz

Watch video below:

Matt’s story is a personal one, but it’s one we can all learn from.

I think the most important thing to take away here is that self-love takes time and is different for everyone no matter what they look like. It’s also worth noting that for Matt, losing weight was an important part of his journey, but that might not be the case for everyone. Even so, our society has such incredibly high and unrealistic body standards that even many of those who do work to lose weight end up feeling uncomfortable or being shamed for not having “perfect bodies” once they’ve lost weight.

There’s no such thing as a “perfect body” because everyone is different, which is what makes us beautiful and great! I’m glad there are people like Matt in the world who are not only willing to share their stories but also to inspire others by showing that body confidence comes in all shapes and sizes, and that everyone deserves to feel good about who they are. Here’s hoping Matt’s inspiring words can help others begin to love and accept themselves, no matter where they’re at in their journey.

Drive-thru worker at Chick-fil-A rescues customer’s daughter from choking on a coin

Every parent has made that split decision to grab a quick lunch or dinner by pulling into the nearest drive-thru. You’re going through your mental check list of all the tasks you have left to complete when you realize it’s been a few hours since you’ve fed your tiny human. So instead of switching stations in your brain to mentally flip through what’s in your cabinets, you pull into a fast food place and call it dinner.

Most people aren’t expecting a life changing experience while in the drive-thru but for one mom, it was. Liliana Leahy pulled into the Chick-fil-A drive-thru to grab lunch when her daughter started to choke. Leahy explained that she panicked when her daughter struggled to breathe and was unable to communicate what was wrong. The mom began began screaming.

“So I started like screaming, like hey help me. Somebody help me. My daughter is choking. Just panic,” Leahy tells 11Alive.

Thankfully, the scared mom’s screams were answered by a Chik-fil-A employee who jumped into action. Mia Isabella Velez saw the little girl was choking and got the 3-year-old out of the car to do the Heimlich maneuver. It took about three tries before the large coin came flying out of the girl’s mouth. Velez is only 18 and just recently moved to Georgia from California, but that day she just happened to be at the right place in the right time.

After the incident took place, the little girl just wanted an ice cream. It was well deserved. What a scary situation for everyone involved.

‘Did You Not Realize You Were In a Cult?’: Whoopi Goldberg Straight-Up Asked A Former Trump Loyalist The Big Question

Former Donald Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson stopped by The View on Tuesday morning to promote her new book, and Whoopi Goldberg got straight to the point when it came to asking why Hutchinson didn’t leave the MAGA White House sooner.

“Did you not realize you were in a cult?” Goldberg asked as Hutchinson reflected on her time working for Trump. Co-host Sara Haines added to that point. “Look at church cult leaders,” Haines said. “You read these books about the slow degradation of tearing down the individual to build the leader. It happens. It’s a mind… thing.”

Of course, leave it to Joy Behar to go there. “Were there daddy issues?” she asked Hutchinson. “I mean, a lot of these people feel like they have daddy issues. … But a lot of them are following Daddy. Like, ‘Tell me what to do, Daddy.’”

Despite the daddy jokes, Hutchinson didn’t avoid the question, according to Mediaite.

“I can’t speak for other people on that but I will say, yes, he is charming,” Hutchinson admitted. “He has that personality that can bring you in. But it’s more about the power of Donald Trump’s movement. And Donald Trump wasn’t just born yesterday. He didn’t just appear in 2015.”

However, the former Trump aide sees much more clearly now after realizing it was not her job to stop the former president from making terrible decisions.

“He’s a grown man and he made decisions to overrule our democratic rule of law,” Hutchinson said. “And it is not the staff around him. So looking back and upon reflection, I should not have felt that way. But I felt that loyalty to him still because I wanted him to still be surrounded by good people. And I thought that I could be a decent voice around him.”

Conservatives Are Having A Complete Meltdown Over ‘Homely’ Taylor Swift Hanging Out With Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift once sang, “Loving him was red / Burning red.” Now it’s the people in red hats who are burning with hatred for her after she was spotted cheering for Travis Kelce during the Kansas City Chiefs game over the weekend. The Hall of Fame-bound tight end appeared in a Bud Light commercial and is pro-vaccines, so even though he keeps his politics to himself, that’s still enough for the right-wing media to flip out about their budding relationship.

The Federalist co-founder Sean Davis wrote on X, “Taylor Swift is dumb and her music sucks.” He also shared a Federalist article that claims Swift’s popularity is a “sign of societal decline” and that her music is “utterly defined by self-obsession rather than introspection.” The writer does, however, think “All Too Well” is a good song, so credit where credit is due.

Roger Kimball, a columnist for the Trump-backing American Greatness and the American Spectator, shared Davis’ feelings about Swift’s music and added, “Also, she is homely.” Juanita Broderick, who once accused former President Bill Clinton of rape and who is now an unabashed Trump supporter despite the dozens of women who have accused him of sexual misconduct, reacted to an old video of Swift denouncing Trump by saying, “Who gives a F what Taylor Swift thinks?”

Tomi Lahren is still a fan of Swift’s music, but not her “leftie liberal braindead” politics.

Lahren made those comments for OutKick, the website run by Clay Travis, who had the worst take about Swift and Kelce — until Nick Adams came along.

Adams is either a performance artist in his greatest role as an “alpha male” master troll. Or he’s just a moron.

CBS And ‘Yellowstone’ Might Have A Little FCC Trouble Coming Thanks To Beth Dutton And Her Frequent Smoke Breaks

If there is one thing they love on Yellowstone (besides those cowboy hats and family drama) it’s lighting up a quick cig during stressful moments. The hit series has been dominating streaming services for so long, but now that it has made its way to prime-time cable, it’s a whole new rodeo.

Yellowstone had its primetime debut on CBS last week, and while fans are excited to see Kevin Costner on cable, the FCC is a little less than excited, particularly about Beth Dutton and her cigarette breaks.

The Federal Trade Commission’s Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act prohibits “any advertising of cigarettes and little cigars on radio, television, or other media regulated by the [FCC].” Unfortunately, Beth Dutton is not one to refuse a cigarette. Kelly Reilly, on the other hand, hates those fake cigarettes.

While Yellowstone was previously only available streaming online, a recent report found that streamers are extremely guilty of promoting cigarettes and smoking, as shows like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black brought the use back into the mainstream.

While CBS hasn’t cut out any of the smoking (they did retract some of the cursing!) they might have to if they don’t want to be fined by the FCC, or be forced to come face-to-face with some viewer complaints. Maybe for the next season, the Duttons can introduce nicotine patches? Assuming there will even be a next season.

Jayson Tatum Gave Kevin Hart One Of His Son Deuce’s Jerseys To See If It’d Fit Him

Jayson Tatum is getting set for his seventh season with the Boston Celtics, as the former No. 3 overall pick has become one of the NBA’s premier stars, making the Celtics a perennial contender in the East. That said, this year’s team looks a bit different with Kristaps Porzingis in town and Marcus Smart and Grant Williams now gone, as the organization looked to change course a bit after falling flat in the Eastern Conference Finals a year ago.

Like many NBA stars, the weeks leading into camp are also about getting out and doing the media rounds, and Tatum made a stop in on the season premiere of Kevin Hart’s “Cold As Balls” show, where the comedian can’t actually get in the cold tub right now after tearing his abductors trying to race someone. Tatum discussed the new-look Celtics and how it’s both exciting to have Porzingis and a hopefully more dynamic offense and sad going into the season without Smart and Grant given their importance to the team in previous years.

However, prior to all of that, Tatum had a present for Hart, bringing one of his son Deuce’s jerseys for Kevin to try on in hopes it would fit.

Kevin Hart’s commitment to doing bits about how short he is can get tiresome to some folks, but this is a pretty good one from Tatum and the jersey does fit Hart upsettingly well. The best part is Tatum trying to put it on Hart and being reminded of how he gets Deuce dressed in the morning. Hart, who is a diehard Sixers fan, plays along and tries to insist later that the Sixers (who are dealing with the James Harden mess) will stand in the Celtics way of a title, to which Tatum dryly replies “will they?”

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

This week saw the release of a ton of great new pop music. A ton of artists returned with stellar new albums, including Kylie Minogue bringing the heat on Tension and Slayyyter keeping the party going on Starf*cker. And even with that, there is still so much left to choose from — adding to an already record year for music.

Check out the rest of Uproxx’s Best New Pop Music roundup below.

Zach Bryan, Noah Kahan — “Sarah’s Place”

Zach Bryan surprised fans with a brand new EP titled Boys Of Faith, and it also features some standout collaborations. One of which is Noah Kahan on “Sarah’s Place,” where the two reflect on memories of someone they no longer see, but still keep loosely in touch with. While fictional, there is still a bit of emotional reliability to it that most can understand.

Shakira, Fuerza Regida — “El Jefe”

Shakira’s new “El Jefe” collaboration with Fuerza Regida finds her struggling with the stresses of daily life, including dropping her kids at school. However, some are suspecting there’s a layer of a diss track, as she mentions the name of her nanny who discovered her ex’s affair.

Kylie Minogue — “Green Light”

Kylie Minogue returned with her album, Tension, and fans have a ton of thoughts — as they’ve been excitedly waiting for it. “Green Light” arrives later into the record in terms of tracklist sequencing, but it continues the danceable, mesmerizing vibe to keep the night going. While others started slower or opened with a more robotic instrumental, this one feels more disco-inspired.

Fifty Fifty — “Lovin’ Me – Live Studio Version OT4”

Fifty Fifty is already honoring their successful year in a special way, as they dropped their The Beginning compilation EP. It includes several versions of their hit “Cupid,” including the Sabrina Carpenter remix and a sped-up version. However, it’s their live studio takes, like of “Lovin’ Me,” that slow things down and show people just how vocally talented these girls are.

Bleachers — “Modern Girl”

Believed to be the lead single from their fourth album, Bleachers’ “Modern Girl” is a carefree jam session that also namedrops the band members in the lyrics, making it a fun, personal touch. The track also appears in the new season of Sex Education.

Slayyyter — “I Love Hollywood”

Slayyyter’s “I Love Hollywood,” from her new album, Starf*cker, finds her fully leaning into the high-glam mentality. With inspiration from Y2K pop stars like Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, and more, she takes the vibes to another level — going on an extensive shopping spree, smoking in a limo, and more.

Kim Petras — “Confession”

Kim Petras also put out a new surprise record titled Problématique. “I got so many diamonds and rings / I don’t need more material things / But lately you’ve been all in my dreams,” she reveals on “Confession,” a romantic spin about rejecting the expensive lifestyle.

Holly Humberstone — “Into Your Room”

Holly Humberstone is approaching the release of her Paint My Bedroom Black album and has treated fans to another strong preview with “Into Your Room.” Blending her unique electronic beats and emotional lyricism, she takes part of the blame for being the downfall of a relationship.

Chappell Roan — “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl”

In the music video for “Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl” from Chappell Roan’s The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess, she takes the part of an “alien tourist” as she wanders around Los Angeles. The song itself opens with an entertaining narration of a bad date that Roan went on.

Troye Sivan — “Got Me Started”

Troye Sivan already had the internet talking after his “Rush” release, and his “Got Me Started” follow-up is just as addictive. The neon-themed music video matches the club-ready vibes. It also samples Bag Raiders’ “Shooting Stars,” of which Sivan shared, “I’m over the moon about the opportunity to sample that track because this song is iconic to me.”

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
