Lil Durk And Kid Cudi’s ‘Guitar In My Room’ Video Is A Luminous Look At Rap’s Most Influential Signature Sounds

If hip-hop’s 50th-anniversary celebrations have taught fans of the culture anything, it’s just how expansive the music has been. Rapper Lil Durk and Kid Cudi are two shining examples of the genre’s growth. The two sub-section innovators linked up for a new track titled “Guitar In My Room.”

Both the track and its official accompanying video are spearheaded by Cole Bennett. As the second single off Bennett’s forthcoming compilation album, “Guitar In My Room,” is a luminous look at their duo’s influential signature sounds. To open the record, Durk lets listeners into his bittersweet reality.

“I’m in a room with my guitar, I’m tryna prove that I’m a star / But I hate when we keep distance ’cause it’s a difference with response / Keep it natural the first day, we gon’ watch Tubi in the car / Ask me what’s my motivation, I say, ‘The trenches,’ she say, ‘Why?’ / I was takin’ all prescriptions, them drugs / I wanna ask for your permission, don’t judge / Before you ever get a job, get a gun,” rapped Durk.

Cudi shifts the energy from gloomy to litty when it is his turn on the mic. “Caught you in a dream, I hit you with that sauce / If we aim at the moon, no, baby, we won’t fall / She said she miss that feeling / A real n**** that is so appealin’ / Keep it low, baby, I’m not leavin’ / Soakin’ up your glory days slow / If there’s problems, I’ll solve ’em, no lie / You never had a n**** catchin’ all the signs / It’s time, baby, lost in the lights,” rapped Cudi.

Director Lisa Demaine On The Flynns’ Demise And The Family Theme In ‘Power Book IV: Force’ Season 2, Episode 5

(WARNING: Spoilers for the most recent Power Book IV: Force episode will be found below.)

Crown Vic,” this week’s episode of Power Book IV: Force, was a shock, to say the least. Tommy Flanagan’s character, Walter Flynn, is killed off his the episode following his children Vic and Claudia’s plan to ambush him and take him out once and for all. The plan, which was spearheaded by Claudia, wasn’t as successful as she wanted it to be and she also hoped that Vic would be caught in the crossfire. She failed to complete that part of the mission, and she will surely pay for it in the future.

Elsewhere in the season two episode, Tommy Egan is forced to make a tough decision in regards to D-Mac to ensure that his nephew can live out his promising future, something Tommy himself was never able to do. Diamond and Jenard also reconcile their differences, but it only comes after their father passes away. Overall, the theme of family exists heavily in this episode and it’s something that plays out differently for everyone.

Following the episode’s release, we caught up with Lisa Demaine, the director of “Crown Vic.” Demaine discussed the family theme in the episode, the demise of the Flynn family, the authorities’ pursuit of Tommy and CBI, and what to expect in the second half of the season.

There’s a theme surrounding family in this episode as we see relationships with the various characters reach new peaks or a point of no return. What was the specific theme attached to “family” that you wanted to convey in this episode?

The theme was longing. You see it with Diamond when he sees his daddy for the first time in years. The feeling that Isaac and I talked about, where he wanted to be and where I was hoping he could get, was that eight-year-old longing for daddy to show up for him. For Vic, it’s been the longing to be recognized by Walter to not be the little son who’s never good enough. The longing has been really thematic. You see the longing with Kate wanting to be a mother to D-Mac. She’s longing to be the mother she wasn’t to Tommy and to JP — and she thinks she’s finally doing it with D-Mac, until Tommy takes him.

There’s even a moment of longing with Tommy when he is on the phone with D-Mac after he’s been kidnapped and he’s back at the farm and he says, “I’ve got eyes on you everywhere. Don’t you try to escape,” basically. Then, Tommy almost says “D-Mac, I love –” and he stops himself. Tommy almost says, “D-Mac, I love you.” So there’s a longing thematically with the families throughout this episode. Everyone’s trying to belong, no matter if you’re a drug dealer, a fucked up addict who’s recovering, [or] a grown-ass boxer man who’s formidable, but still longs to be loved by your daddy.

The biggest example of the family dynamics that we see in this episode comes with the death of Walter Flynn. What made this the time to say okay, “It’s time to make this happen.” Because his death has always been foreshadowed, but not this way.

I think that we’ve been teasing out a King Lear story with the Flynn family this season and Claudia’s ambitions are palpable. You can feel it, you can see it, she wants to be queen, so building of that. When I got the script from Gary and I read it, I was like, “Are we really doing this? We’re really killing Walter Flynn? Are we?” He’s like, “We’re gonna shock the world, we’re gonna shake the world up.” That’s kind of the thing with Tommy coming to Chicago, and trying to be the kingpin, he’s got to shake it up. I think that was part of it. In order for Tommy and CBI to continue their march towards trying to take over and become the connect, he’s got to start taking people out. The formidable foe of Walter Flynn being taken out, and not even having to be taken out by Tommy, but the blind ambition of his own family, his own children, is such an epic storyline — so Shakespearean.

I was a bit surprised when Claudia was seemingly caught off guard by the revelation that the Flynn family business wouldn’t be for her to take over after her father’s death. Why after all that she’s been through does it still surprise her?

I think ambition is blind and I think Claudia is a bit blinded by her own single ambition of wanting to be on top. Vic has always been a little softer, a little less inclined to want to run it [and] to be the leader. So I think she assumes that she’s really the strong one and she’s really the one who knows this business better than Vic. Vic was always at daddy’s calling, Claudia feels like she can finally step into her own power [and] that she has the ability. So I think her own blind ambition makes her think she can do it and also that Vic doesn’t want it. She just assumes that Vic would acquiesce and she would be queen. I love the scene with [her and] Brendan Doyle because I think Doyle is sweet on her, and I think that if she were not gay, that they might be together because they are attracted to each other. He does it out of the place where he actually likes her and cares about her when he tells her, “You’ll never be queen,” to let her know. Then that sets her up on the next step of her King Lear play.

How much and in what ways at all did Ghost and Tariq’s relationship and the way Tariq grew up inspire the direction for Tommy and D-Mac in this episode?

Not as much as one would think because Tommy really has his own ideas about what his family should be. He started to take D-Mac under his wing when he saw last season how smart D-Mac was, and when he realized that D-Mac was JP’s son, he started to put him under his wing to look out for D-Mac like nobody looked out for him. I think it’s a desire for Tommy to have family, to protect D-Mac, and protect him from the streets like no one protected me. Tommy didn’t have a choice. He feels like D-Mac is smart enough. Tommy can set him up to not have to go on the streets and he’s been trying to do that this season to keep him out of there. When D-Mac goes rogue, he’s just got to shut it down.

Though he looked unfazed by it, what about Diamond’s character made it important to grant him a moment of closure with his father and why didn’t Jenard get that same opportunity?

I think it’s an interesting choice, it could have gone either way. I think it was so interesting to have the big brother have that moment with the dad, especially given in the moment that Jenard is not coping very well. He’s snorting heroin, he’s using on the street, [and] he’s floundering a bit. I think what’s really nice is that big brother getting some closure, gives big brother the ability to step in and start to take care of Jenard. Diamond takes that role on when Jenard shows up and dad is gone, [he says], “What are we going to do D? Pop is gone.” I love the story that Diamond spins. “He loved us, he wished he could have been there for us. You were always the favorite.” You see him stepping into the role of, is it going to be reunification for the two brothers? Will they get back into CBI?

There’s so much family in this episode. When you have family drama and a family rift, can you heal it and how do you heal it? You see that happening through the death of this really angry, not-very-nice man. I mean, Big Syd was Big Syd, he never was what he should have been to these boys. Diamond steps into it to take care of Jenard and that’s why he had the closure with dad that Jenard didn’t.

Like you said, we also see Jenard spiral a bit more in this episode. What would you say that’s most connected to?

These wounds always start deep and young. I think it is connected to the loss of his father [and] never having that. Diamond going away to prison [and] forcing him into a world that maybe he shouldn’t have been right. Jenard was the smart one, he did have the opportunity to do something different. The spiral happens when he and his fear of Tommy, and the jealousy almost of Tommy coming in, and the rift between them develops. He [says], “This white boy is coming between us and you’re picking him over me.” That wound I think that it causes between the brothers is what starts his spiral and his demise. Once he starts using, he can’t keep his game together either.

Throughout the entire Power Universe, we’ve seen the feds come after a series’ main characters time and time again, is there anything different that we can expect with the task force against Tommy and CBI?

I think that Stacy Mark’s ambition to do whatever it takes. She is willing to bend the rules. I mean Bobby, her husband — Chris Tardio, the actor that plays Bobby DiFranco — is like her ambition is in the way with her bending rules to get people to ID and to pointing at pictures when she’s interrogating people. I think that her desire to get Tommy Egan at any cost — you see at the end. “Oh, you’ll give us Claudia Flynn, you’ll give us your sister, but what I really want is Tommy Egan.” She’s willing to let Vic walk – an unknown murderer – to try to get Tommy. I think this task force has more gunpowder in their arsenal than maybe in the past because she is so laser-focused after Tommy. Which means that Tommy has a really formidable foe.

You directed the penultimate episode for this season, and without revealing too much of course, what did you hope to accomplish as a director in what these two episodes contributed to the season?

There’s so much big sort of mid-season finale almost in episode five that we do. I mean, there’s Paula’s death, Walter’s death, [and] Brendan Doyle’s death. The Flynn organization takes a big hit. So when we get to 209, there’s not a lot I can say because there’s a lot of spoilers, but obviously, the task force is closing in and working their way towards CBI and the cartel. I will tell you that people die and that drug dealing is a dirty business. There’s not a lot more I can say. Episode 209 is a very big episode with some really big moments that tie a lot of things together.

New episodes of ‘Power Book IV: Force’ are available on the STARZ app on Fridays at 12:00 am ET/PT and on the STARZ TV channel at 8:00 pm ET/PT.

Will Drake Be On DJ Khaled’s New Album ‘Til Next Time?’

The hip-hop side of the music industry is about to get very busy soon. A slew of rap’s biggest names, from Drake to DJ Khaled to Nicki Minaj, are plotting to release new albums in the fourth quarter of 2023 (or early in 2024) and many of them have been so productive that they’re all featured on each others’ upcoming projects.

Nicki Minaj confirmed that she’s appearing on Drake’s For All The Dogs while expressing her hope that he’ll do the same for her Pink Friday 2. Meanwhile, DJ Khaled, whose albums are always star-studded events, recently revealed that his new album, Til Next Time, is going to have not just one, but two appearances from The Boy.

Will Drake Be On DJ Khaled’s New Album ‘Til Next Time?

As you can see from the video clip above, DJ Khaled seems pretty excited about having two Drake features on his next album. He even holds up a sign announcing the features as he accompanies Drake through the tunnel of an arena.

It’s sweet that Khaled still gets so excited about working with Drake, especially after the duo has racked up such an impressive collection of collaborations over the past decade-plus. While “I’m On One” marks the beginning of their musical relationship, more recently, they’ve teamed up on “Staying Alive,” “Popstar,” and “To The Max,” while they’ve made a habit of semi-trolling each other on social media.

Last November, Drake gave DJ Khaled four luxury toilets for his birthday, while this June, Khaled’s hype video for Drake’s poetry book turned into an inadvertent burn when he noted it was “a sentence.”

Here’s Why The Visual Effects On Gareth Edwards’ ‘The Creator’ Are So Unique

Gareth Edwards’ The Creator is a beautiful film that, filmed on a modest budget, costs around a third of what the typical effects-heavy film might cost these days. An original sci-fi film (rare enough these days, especially one that will be in theaters) about a war between humans and artificial intelligence.

Ahead, Jay Cooper, visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic, takes us through why making The Creator was such a unique experience. Cooper has worked on probably every movie you’d expect – a lot of Marvel movies and a lot of Star Wars projects that you’ve seen. Honestly, maybe The Creator was, for him, just another day at the office? It turns out it wasn’t and Cooper says, the way The Creator was made, with this low of a budget, it could change how movies are made going forward. However, he adds, it would take a director who is, let’s say, eager enough to get out in the world and be “uncomfortable” for an extended amount of time like Gareth Edwards.

From the outside, this movie seems very unique in how it was made. Or for you was this just another day at the office?

I think it’s unique on a number of different levels. The part that’s the most important to me is it’s unique in terms of story, and visual ask. We’re living in a time when there’s not a lot of individual sci-fi movies that are being made.

That’s true.

Then, the other components that are really unique, are in Gareth you have a filmmaker that’s trying to navigate the studio system in a way where he wants to hold onto parts of the independent film structure, the way he constructs the movie, but also has the budget and the resources of a larger film. That part is also unique and really interesting to see. And then in terms of the way that we approached the work, it was also unique in the sense that the way that Gareth partnered with ILM to create the visual effects where he would get as much stuff on set, have incredibly long takes, and then bring all of it back and go, “All right, here’s the frame. How are we going to make this look amazing? What structures can we add here? What is the visual impact to plus this up?”

Gareth mentioned he’d bring footage back from shooting on location and it wasn’t really set up to have effects added, but he would say let’s just add them.

So the goal was, and this was from the conversation that we had really early on, Gareth wanted to have as much time as he could with his actors. One of his actors is very young, and with a very young actress comes constraints on how much time she can be on set. He didn’t want her in a makeup chair for three hours. He didn’t want her to have to wear an appliance that would make her self-conscious. He didn’t want anything that was going to get in the way of her being able to find these emotional places that she needed to go. And so we said, “All right, we’re going to partner with you. We’re going to just put on minimal tracking dots and then we’ll figure it out later.” And that was a little stressful, but we figured that out. And the same could be said for a number of the other components.

Well, does that change things going forward in other movies? If you figured that out and you can just do that now, that seems like a big thing.

Yeah, absolutely. And there’s sort of a difficult trade-off, but I have a feeling it’s something that we’ll probably be asked to do again and again.

What’s that mean, difficult trade-off? Because obviously, this movie didn’t cost as much as a lot of movies, so is it just more time-consuming?

Well, I mean we did some things that were really smart. We did a CG construction of Madeleine Yuna Voyles and a number of the primary actors. So we had a grounded truth for what the topography of their faces were and their heads, which helped us. But a lot of the stuff is man-hours, sort of locking things. And we did some clever things, too. And there were conversations about what parts are easier and what parts are harder and we tried to find a good equilibrium. There were times that we had designs where we were replacing the neck, and then we sort of talked about whether it was worth it to replace the neck even though it was harder to do that.

So again, one of the benefits of working with Gareth and his knowledge as a visual effects artist is that we were able to talk through some of these points and say, listen, this is really hard. This is a lot easier but gets you 80 percent of what you’re looking for. And so we tried to find opportunities where if it previously it was a ten on the difficulty scale and we took it down to a five, but it was still an eight on the visual scale. You know what I mean?

So you’re trying to look for opportunities throughout the entire film where we can maximize visual impact with lower costs because ultimately that’s what it really is. Everything, all of these things – it’s people’s time, ultimately. That’s where it all sort adds up to. And that extended to which robots we were replacing. That extended to which cars we were replacing. It also extended to technique.

One of the things that we talked about a lot was that, normally in visual effects when you’re doing environment work, the temptation is to replace everything with a 3-D model. And that 3-D model goes and gets textured and lit. There are places where we’re cheating, where it’s really 2-D artwork that we’ve pasted back there. And so these are techniques that he’s very familiar with. His work on Monsters, and earlier in his career, and he was advocating for these things. He’s not advocating for the most expensive technique. He’s advocating for how to get the largest amount of visual impact while keeping some money in the tank for more and more shops.

Well, speaking of visual impact, there’s one scene that stands out for me of just a terrifying scene and sure looked expensive…

I can’t wait see what you’re saying? I’m really excited about this moment. What’s the one that had the impact?

The bomb robot running at full speed at people. It’s just, that guy is terrifying.

So the G14, so that’s funny, because that robot leaving the tank was an incredibly simple set. There was an actor on the day that, obviously, all your framing decisions are based on doing that. So we had an actor on the day. And then there was a lot of work with Chris Potter in London to get that walk cycle or that run cycle working. Yeah, it’s cool. It’s cool work. There’s no doubt about it. It’s really fun.
So explain to me in layman’s terms why a movie that costs three times as much as this one, I can walk out and think that kind of just looked like a cartoon. And I can watch and this movie that didn’t cost that much and was gorgeous. How does that work? How did that happen?

I think a lot of that success is owed to Greig Fraser, Oren Soffer, and Gareth.

Well, I already spoke to all of them, it’s time for you to take some credit on this. too.

Well, here’s what I’ll say. In visual effects, you kind of are standing on the shoulders of other departments. And if your production makes choices that your movie is going to be shot entirely on the back lot, for example, and you’re going to tense the entire environment in blue, that is one kind of look. And if you make the choice that no, no, we’re going to be uncomfortable and we’re going to shoot in eight different countries in 80 different locations?

So there’s a level of discomfort that comes with it, and that’s the thing that Gareth is willing to put himself through. And I don’t think it’s that other movies aren’t, it’s just that he believes so strongly that the look is better if you go to these different locations. You wait for the right time of day, you shoot really long, uninterrupted takes so you come back from set with just hours and hours of footage. There’s a natural beauty and a natural realism that’s embedded in these locations that becomes the cornerstone of our work.

Well, let me ask you, you said he believes this is the way to do it. Is he right?

I mean, to me, I think it’s all about the kind of movie you want to make. And the movie that you want to make…

So if you want to make a gorgeous movie, he’s right?

No, no, no. I wouldn’t even say “gorgeous movie.” I think I’ve worked on gorgeous movies that…

Well, of course you have. You know what I mean. For every gorgeous movie, there’s one that’s not.

I think I’m getting to what you’re asking, which is, if you want a movie that feels like it’s got connective tissue with Apocalypse Now and Baraka and these almost travel log films? Like The Thin Red Line? This is kind of the approach that makes sense for me. And I love that. And I think there’s a lot of movies that do a certain amount of travel, also, that also have similar scope, but they may not be sci-fi or may not be just sort of visual effects films in that sense.

After the screening I was at, a friend of mine said, “I can’t remember the last time I watched a sci-fi movie that looks like it was shot on planet Earth.”

Yeah, it does. It absolutely does. And it’s a lot of time in the van and a lot of time at different locations and a lot of different countries. And that is his super strength as a filmmaker is finding out a way to squeeze in massive amounts of production value with a very small footprint. I think that extends everywhere.

Can this change how movies are made going forward? Or is the answer yes, but you’d kind of need a person like Gareth as director?

I think there’s a leap of faith that has to be taken. There’s a level of discomfort that comes with that, right? There’s a level of discomfort that comes with it’s going to be 15 people and not having all the trappings of a large movie. And you have to be comfortable with those drawbacks. Gareth is a very talented guy. He knows what things he’s giving up when he does those things and is able to do it. And the studio, they came along for the ride. I mean, I think there was probably some discomfort there where the idea of like, no, no, no, we’re going to shoot all this stuff and then we’re going to figure it out afterwards.

Mike Lindell Is Huffing And Puffing About The Collapse Of MyPillow Because His Creditors Launched An ‘All-Out Attack’

“Life moves pretty fast,” as a wise character named Ferris Bueller once told the world.

Not too long ago, MyPillow guru Mike Lindell was reportedly wandering the White House freely and without an escort. These days, he’s melting down in depositions and unable to get his phone back after it got swiped by the FBI in a Hardee’s drive-thru.

Lindell now suggests, although he could simply be trying to drive donations, that MyPillow is on the brink of full-on extinction. This week, he dropped two relevant claims, including telling Steve Bannon (via Newsweek) that American Express dropped his long-standing million-dollar credit line “down to $100,000, just cripples MyPillow” for “no reason.” He then raged that this is evidence of an “all-out attack on MyPillow.” Also this week, he groused to choke-out fan Alex Jones to blame Fox News more MyPillow chaos because they settled their Dominion Voting Systems lawsuits, which led to vendors and creditors freaking out on him. From Raw Story:

During a Thursday interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Lindell explained how his company had spiraled downward after retailers stopped selling his merchandise and Fox News made a “dirty deal” to settle a lawsuit with Dominion Voting Systems. Lindell is also facing a lawsuit from the voting machine company.

“When that happened, I had vendors get very nervous, and banks get very nervous about my bills,” he recalled. “They’re calling me up. I said, no, that doesn’t even go into court ’til next year.”

It’s not great, but that’s what happens when one devotes one’s entire existence to attempting to overturn democracy while worshipping at the MAGA altar. Lindell was once perched atop his MyPillow empire, and now, he’s claiming that it’s about to all come clattering down around him.

‘Gen-V’: The Biggest Losing-It Reactions To That Sex Scene In The Season Premiere

(Spoilers for Gen V will be found below.)

School’s in for the kids of Gen-V and if fans thought the supes on The Boys were f*cked up, they clearly weren’t ready for what happens when raging hormones mix with mutagenic super serums.

The first three episodes of Amazon Prime’s highly anticipated spin-off dropped on Friday, introducing us to a cast of younger, even more troubled individuals with god-like powers and no earthly idea how to use them for good. And sure, guts were spilled, blood was spattered, and a girl Rick Moranis-ed herself so that she could livestream a cage match with a gerbil, but all of that is just background noise. What really got fans buzzing in the show’s season premiere, “God U,” was, naturally, a penis. A very large penis, relatively speaking.

After episodes like “Herogasm,” and that montage of Homelander literally banging Stormfront to death, genitalia shouldn’t still have the ability to surprise us when it pops up in Eric Kripke’s debauched superhero-verse. But somehow, the team behind Gen-V surpassed expectations, giving us one of the weirdest, most aWTF sex scenes we’ve seen on TV since … well, the season three premiere of The Boys. There’s less cocaine as Cricket (Lizzie Broadway) purges herself to half her size in order to fulfill a creep’s kink, but watching her hang onto a magnified d*ck like it’s one of those punching bags in gym class that the kids would wrap their bodies around to see who could stay on the longest is an image that won’t fade from our brains anytime soon.

And it sounds like Twitter feels the same. Here are some of the best reactions to the cringiest sex scene we’ve seen on TV in some time.

Is Ice Spice An Industry Plant?

To a casual observer, it seems like Ice Spice has gone from being relatively unknown to one of the biggest stars in hip-hop practically overnight. “Munch (Feelin’ U),” her breakout single, only came out a little over a year ago, and since then, the Bronx-born rapper has been featured on songs with Taylor Swift and the soundtrack of the biggest movie of the year.

For some people, all of this has happened too quickly to be organic and there’s only one explanation for Ice Spice’s rapid rise to stardom (other than, y’know, a lot of people liking her music); she must be an industry plant.

Growing more popular than ever over the past few years, “Industry plant” is the term leveled at entertainers who seemingly have it too good, too quickly (it’s related to “nepo babies” without the family connections). If ever an artist starts to receive a lot of really high-profile looks in a short amount of time without a history of putting out a lot of music prior to their big breakout moment, it’s assumed that shadowy forces (usually major labels) have cooperated to make it so.

It’s an accusation that’s been thrown at any number of artists who seemed to get popular in a hurry, from Chance The Rapper and Cardi B to Flyana Boss, Lil Nas X, and HER — usually by folks who arrived late to the hype train, once it had already left the station.

Is Ice Spice An Industry Plant?

No. Come on.

Whether Ice Spice’s rise was 100 percent organic or due to the machinations of label reps behind the scenes, she wouldn’t be where she is today without tons of fan support. People are streaming her songs and buying tickets to see her perform; brands recognize the platform she now has and are taking advantage.

(And anyway, if a label is pouring resources into helping to increase awareness of an artist under its umbrella — that is LITERALLY THE LABEL’S JOB. That is what they are supposed to do and what they have always done. Just because it doesn’t always work doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. For every one success story are dozens of flops labels also spent a lot of money on. People just like Ice Spice. It’s not the end of the world. Relax.)

Ice Spice herself addressed rumors of her industry plant status in a new interview with Variety saying, “A lot of people have thrown that in my face — like ‘Oh, I’ve never seen anything happen so quickly. She needs to be studied,’ or ‘She’s a plant. I just let people believe whatever they want to believe, to be honest. I don’t really mind all the rumors. At first, I did, but now I’m at a point where I understand that just comes with this lifestyle.”

In any event, I have a theory of my own. If you spend enough time checking the timelines and profiles of the folks calling Ice Spice — or any successful artist — an industry plant, you WILL find a link to a SoundCloud or Spotify page with some mediocre music and less than 1,000 plays. Because the real reason anyone believes in that particular conspiracy theory is some good, old-fashioned “why not me”-flavored sour grapes.

How Does Little Cricket Activate Her Powers In ‘Gen V’?

(Spoilers for Amazon’s Gen V will be found below.)

The Boys spinoff Gen V stays true to its gory and raunchy roots. The series debuted with a fiery episode (and two more) that left viewers realizing that it’s best not to get attached to characters too fast.

One exception, hopefully, would be Emma Meyer/Little Cricket (Lizzy Broadway), who is still standing, although she might wish otherwise. Her powers will remind fans of Termite, and Little Cricket’s work got dirty, fast.

That wasn’t the worst of it. Emma had a hookup scene and found that her beau had been crushing on her, but really, he was interested in her ability to shrink down to less than one inch in size. And he asked if she could do that for him while they did the thing. Soon enough, fans got a load of one of the season’s many dong shots, which turned into some impressive WTF stunt work. Cue Cricket hanging onto a prosthetic penis for dear life while the dude asked her to confirm that he was so big. Then came the ball stomping request. It was nuts. She should have climbed into an orifice and taught him a lesson.

That didn’t happen this time. Yet what is worth noting is how Little Cricket activates her powers to shrink down to itty bitty size. It’s one of many characters on this show whose powers manifest through very uncomfortable and possibly triggering mechanisms. Cricket purges the contents of her stomach in order to shrink. It’s a stark and sobering metaphor, and as with everything to do with this franchise, it’s handled with pitch black humor. We see Cricket kneel in front of a toilet and beginning the purging process, and before we know it, the show hits us with the sex scene. Only The Boys could get away with this.

Long live Little Cricket. She had better not get squished.

‘Gen-V’ Season 1, Episode 1 Recap: Ranking All The WTF Moments

Class is in session for the suped-up adolescents of Gen V.

The young adult spin-off of Amazon Prime’s diabolical superhero experiment The Boys takes its world — where exceptionally powered heroes have proven to be exceptionally heinous jerks — and adds a touch of mystery, some raging hormones, and an exploding body or two. The end result? A gory, volatile, absolutely addictive college drama that manages to answer the question of its own existence without leaning too heavily on the original storyline imagined by Garth Ennis, Eric Kripke, and company.

That’s not to say that Vought and The Seven are missing from the world of Gen V. Early on, as the show’s protagonist Marie (Jaz Sinclair), a woman who wields ribbons of her own blood Indiana Jones-style, escapes a correctional facility to attend the supe training institute known as Godolkin University, we see their influence. Everyone from Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligot) to A-Train (Jessie Usher) and The Deep (Chace Crawford) have graduated from this place, honing their skills with courses in crimefighting and personal branding in order to monetize their genetic anomalies. And, in the timeline of the bigger Boys universe, Gen V is situated just after the events of season three, which means fans of that show can expect cameos from names like Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and former Vought CEO Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie).

But even as it borrows elements from Kripke’s flagship, it always seems in on its own joke. There’s an irony in a show, famous for skewering the franchise-ification of comic book stories, franchising its own superhero-verse. Gen V knows that. It’s laughing at itself, along with the rest of us, while still dropping bodies and bloodying the walls and lobbing magnified d*cks in our faces every chance it gets.

And to celebrate this irreverent debauchery, we’re recapping this season via a leaderboard ranking, not unlike that of Godolkin itself. Instead of heroics, we’re taking stock of the wildest, most WTF moments in each episode because yes, using your supernatural abilities for good is cool but do you know what’s cooler? Burning your teacher to a crisp and shrinking yourself so that you’re small enough to cage-fight a hamster named David Caruso.

Here is where our f*cked up leaderboard sits after episode one’s “God U.”

7. Andre’s Murderous Pick-up Line

A charming slacker with daddy issues and a healthy disgust for corporate branding, Andre Anderson (Chance Perdomo) instantly ingratiates himself to Marie when the two witness a strange escape attempt featuring an erratic student and a human swat team that hints at a bigger mystery to come. Of course, Andre could care less about secret experiments conducted in underground facilities dubbed “The Woods,” he wants to get high and f*ck – in that order. Unfortunately, that means that, while chatting up a girl in a club a few of the students have snuck into, Andre’s ecstasy-addled brain decides using his powers to shape a coin into a delicate bird before flying it into another patron’s cup is a surefire way to score. Maybe it would’ve worked if that guy hadn’t bumped into him, but try telling that to the girl currently bleeding out on the dance floor as Ofenbach’s “Body Talk” blares through the speakers.

6. Golden Boy’s Hot Hug

Luke Riordan (Patrick Schwarzenegger) might have the personality of undercooked rice but he launches a fiery rebellion towards the end of the show’s premiere after a cocaine binge reveals secrets he just can’t live with anymore. We’re still not sure what those secrets are, or what Professor Brink (Clancy Brown) did to the kid that convinced him to do his best Johnny Storm impersonation while the two were wrapped in an embrace but the old man probably deserved it.

5. Cricket’s Hamster Heavyweight Bout

Some freshmen deal with the crushing expectations and debilitating uncertainty of college life by throwing themselves into clubs, making friends, and passing out on sticky fraternity floors. Not Little Cricket. Real name Emma Meyer (Lizzie Broadway), Cricket is capable of shrinking her body to around half an inch in size and she makes use of this weird ability via her Youtube channel where she delights fans by wrestling her pet gerbil, David Caruso, in order to psyche herself up for the bullying she’s about to endure on campus. Go to therapy, Cricket.

4. The Purge

Speaking of needing an intervention, one of the darker moments in the show’s season premiere centered around Emma’s ability – its inherent uselessness to its wielder and its potential to be exploited by shallow-minded creeps. You see, Cricket can’t just shrink on command, she must empty the contents of her stomach, purging herself in a bathroom stall in order to achieve her “ideal” size. Who said metaphors were dead?

3. Golden Boy’s Golden Shower

No, we’re not referencing a weird sex thing – although we wouldn’t rule out the possibility on a show like Gen V. Instead, our top three ranked WTF moment focuses on Luke’s surprisingly swift turn to the dark side. After killing Brink, Golden Boy believes he has no choice but to silence Marie before she can reveal his part in the professor’s death. A chase ensues, fellow supe Jordan Li (London Thor and Derek Luh) attempts to save her, and eventually, Andre has to talk his friend off the proverbial cliff. Luke simmers down long enough to apologize before reigniting and going out in a blaze of glory while everyone records his meltdown on their phones.

2. Marie’s Killer Period

The transition from girlhood to womanhood is brutal, bloody, and horrifying – but it’s never looked quite like this. Marie’s rite of passage turns hellish when her latent powers manifest. As if hemorrhaging from your vagina wasn’t terrifying enough, Marie discovers that her blood is sentient, responding to her call and acting out when she’s stressed or scared. It accidentally slashes her mom’s throat, hurls shards of tile into her dad’s skull, and leaves her an anemic, murderous mess on the bathroom floor. Somehow, we just know Fiona Apple would love this.

1. Cricket’s Shrink Kink

Purging yourself to hang off a random guy’s d*ck is one thing, but Cricket takes self-loathing to a whole new level in a scene that will likely break the internet – or at least the minds of fans who haven’t seen that “Herogasm” episode yet. Not only is this guy pressuring her to shrink herself in order to offer him pleasure – and him only because, let’s face it, wrapping yourself around a man’s penis when it’s the size of a Sequoia tree isn’t doing it for anyone – but he has the gall to order her to stomp on his sack while she holds on for dear life. One slip, one wrong foot placement, and it’s over for this girl.
