Monday night’s tilt between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs was one of the more highly-anticipated preseason games we’ve seen in a while. That’s because it featured the NBA debuts of a pair of uniquely skilled big men in Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, and Chet Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick in 2022.

The pair went head-to-head in the 122-121 Oklahoma City win, and while you should always be careful to not take too much away from the preseason, the skills that make both of them such exciting prospects were on display. There were also plenty of moments where the two had to guard one another, and at one point in the first quarter, Wembanyama drove towards the rim while Holmgren was defending him, drew contact, finished a layup, and got the and-1 call.

One angle showed that Wembanyama drew the contact by lowering his head and shoulder and bowling Holmgren over, which caught the attention of the Oklahoma City youngster after the game. Holmgren quote tweeted the highlight and basically said that this happened because Wembanyama headbutted him.

Both of the youngsters played limited minutes. Wembanyama had a slightly longer stint, as he had 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting with five rebounds, two steals, and a block in 19 minutes of work. Holmgren, meanwhile, also impressed in his 16 minutes of action, as he scored 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting with nine rebounds, an assist, and a block.

The pair won’t have to wait long to face off against one another during the regular season, as the Thunder host the Spurs on Nov. 14.

When visionary director Michael Mann delivered the epic heist film, Heat, starring powerhouse actors Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, it quickly became heralded as one of the greatest crime dramas of all time. Now, Mann has confirmed that a sequel, Heat 2, will be his next film after finishing work on Ferrari.

Making Mann’s work easier is the fact that he’s already written the story and published it in the novel, Heat 2, which was released last summer. The book was an “obsession” for the writer/director, and Mann is excited to adapt it for the big screen.

Here’s everything we know about Heat 2 as it makes its way towards theaters:

Plot

Heat 2 will be a direct adaptation of the novel written by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner. Released in August 2022, the book serves as both a prequel and a sequel to the iconic film as it reconnects with both Vincent Hanna and Neil McCauley, who were played by Pacino and De Niro, respectively. Val Kilmer’s Chris Shiherlis also appears.

According to Deadline: “The storyline takes readers back to Chicago in 1988 when McCauley, Shiherlis and their high-line crew are taking scores on the West Coast, the U.S.-Mexico border and in Chicago. At the same time, Hanna is cutting his teeth as a rising star in the Chicago Police Department chasing an ultraviolent gang of home invaders.”

The book also deals with the aftermath of the chaotic bank heist from the original film.

Cast

With Heat 2 focusing on younger versions of De Niro and Pacino’s characters from the first film, there’s already a flurry of speculation of who will get to fill the iconic actors’ shoes. Adam Driver has been rumored to be in contention for the part of Neil McCauley, previously played by De Niro. During a promotional appearance for Ferrari, Mann did not confirm or deny those rumors.

“Perhaps,” Mann told Deadline when asked if Driver is up for the McCauley role. “We don’t talk about that yet. Let me put it this way: Adam and I got along like a house on fire [on Ferrari]. We have the same work ethic – which is pretty intense. We like each other, and we had a great time working together artistically.”

As for the role of Pacino’s Vincent Hanna, the actor already made his choice known back in June 2022.

“Timothée Chalamet,” Pacino said at a Q&A panel celebrating Heat‘s 25th anniversary. “I mean, he’s a wonderful actor. Great looks.”

Release Date

Heat 2 does not have an official release date, but Mann has confirmed to Deadline that it will be his next film following the promotional tour for Ferrari.

The Taylor Sheridan universe is expanding beyond your wildest and most rustic cowboy dreams. Lawmen: Bass Reeves is the latest Western drama from the Yellowstone creator, though this time, it’s a real story being brought to the screen.

Lawmen tells the story of Bass Reeves, one of the first Black U.S. Marshals, and his various internal and external struggles with the intense job. The show stars David Oyelowo as the title character, alongside Donald Sutherland, Dennis Quaid, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, Grantham Coleman, Demi Singleton, and Lauren E. Banks. Here is the official synopsis:

From Executive Producers Taylor Sheridan and David Oyelowo comes the untold story of the most legendary lawman in the Old West: Bass Reeves. Lawmen: Bass Reeves, follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.

This is Sheridan’s latest series, as he has been busy working on various Yellowstone-related properties, along with the three (or four? maybe five?) other projects in the works. The man sure loves working with cowboy boots.

Aquaman is DC’s most fun movie (shout out to the octopus drummer), but it sounds like there was nothing fun about making the sequel. Especially for Amber Heard. Variety reports that the actress, who played Aquaman’s red-haired love interest Mera, was nearly fired from sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom until the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, stepped in.

After the first Aquaman was released to mixed reviews but a robust box office, Warner Bros. and director James Wan “decided to drop the actress from the sequel due to her lack of chemistry with Momoa and sent a letter to her attorney, Karl Austen, informing him of its decision,” according to Variety. Sources say the attempted pink slip was “unrelated” to ex-husband Johnny Depp, who she would soon be involved in an ugly legal battle with, and star Jason Momoa “was not involved in the decision-making.”

Heard wasn’t fired, however, because “her former boyfriend, Elon Musk, had one of his litigators send a ‘scorched-earth letter to Warner Bros. threatening to burn the house down’ if the actress wasn’t brought back for a sequel.” Heard probably felt different about Musk then than she does now, after he shared a private photo of her dressed like a video game character.

Wan has denied that Heard’s role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was “pared down” after her high-profile trial against Johnny Depp, but she’s also not in the trailer much. We’ll found out on December 20, when the sequel finally hits theaters.

Killer Mike’s sixth studio album Michael has been out for around four months now, but true to his independent spirit, the Atlanta rapper is still finding new ways to promote his most personal project to date. The latest is a live studio reinterpretation of standout track “Motherless” remixed by Grammy-winning jazz revivalist Robert Glasper. In the video they shared today, Mike, Glasper, and guest vocalist Eryn Allen Kane perform the tender remix in the recording studio, with Glasper’s gentle keys enhancing the loving tone of Mike’s ode to his late mom.

In a statement about the remix, Mike wrote:

Two years ago I was asked to get on a “Black Superhero” by Robert Glasper. The song was incredible and he’d go on to win a Grammy for that album. My only regret was that we weren’t in the same room together when we made it. So when talks of him remixing “MOTHERLESS” came up it was a no brainer — only this time we wanted to be in studio together along with Eryn Allen Kane.

Someone was smart enough to have cameras there capturing us making this tribute to my mother, Druzella Denise Clonts aka OG Mama Niecy and Rob’s mother, Kim Yvette Glasper. Performing this song is never easy. I wept every night on tour.

The outpouring of emotions has been part of healing. To all those who belong to Motherless Club I pray this helps and to all those who are lucky enough to have their mothers: call them!

Mia Khalifa, the model and former adult film star, was fired by Playboy magazine for making “disgusting and reprehensible comments” after she expressed support for Hamas following its attack on Israel.

“We are writing today to let you know of our decision to terminate Playboy’s relationship with Mia Khalifa, including deleting Mia’s Playboy channel on our creator platform,” the company wrote in an email to users of its OnlyFans-like Centerfold platform, according to the New York Post.

It continued, “Mia has made disgusting and reprehensible comments celebrating Hamas’ attacks on Israel and the murder of innocent men, women and children. At Playboy, we encourage free expression and constructive political debate, but we have a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech.”

Khalifa has posted on X multiple times about the conflict, beginning when she wrote, “If you can look at the situation in Palestine and not be on the side of Palestinians, then you are on the wrong side of apartheid and history will show that in time.” When disturbing videos of the attack began to be shared online, she added, “Can someone please tell the freedom fighters in Palestine to flip their phones and film horizontal.” That post has since been deleted.

She later said of her post about filming horizontally that the “statement in no way shape or form is enticing spread of violence, I specifically said freedom fighters because that’s what the Palestinian citizens are… fighting for freedom every day.”

In response to criticisms about her posts from “magic truffles” company Red Light Holland, where she worked as a consultant, Khalifa replied, “I just wanna make sure there’s 4k footage of my people breaking down the walls of the open-air prison they’ve been forced out of their homes and into so we have good options for the history books that write about how they freed themselves from apartheid. Please worry about your sad little company lacking direction and purpose before you utter my name again. I stand with all people fighting oppression, now and always, do your research before begging for my investment in your little project, I’m from LEBANON, are you insane for expecting me to be on the side of colonialism you fucking weirdo.”

Mike Flanagan will return to his most-frightening form with his next Netflix limited series, The Fall Of The House Of Usher. The streaming horror maestro loves to cast returning actors in new series, and Carla Gugino might be no exception to that rule, but she is exceptional. Here, she stars as the most terrifying aspect of this series that is inspired by (although very different from) one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most beloved short stories. Yet her character does not actually appear in the 1839 source material. Who is Verna?

Let’s start with an easter egg: Verna is an unusual name, for sure, but upon closer inspection, it is an anagram for “raven,” and even a casual Poe fan can appreciate that association. Additionally, her character glides through several scenarios that can be linked to various Poe works. To stay relatively spoiler free here, however, it’s safest to begin with Netflix’s summation that “Gugino portrays a shape-shifter named Verna, whose origins can be traced back to a — let’s just say — very famous Poe character.”

The central siblings of this story — Roderick and Madeline Usher — first encounter Verna decades ago on a pivotal New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, they also helm a pharmaceutical company that manufactures and proliferates addictive opioid-based painkillers. Fast forward to the present, and Roderick’s many children begin to meet graphic and brutal deaths that are more than suspicious.

Gugino also portrays the “manifestation” of “consequence” and the “executor in karma” with some supernatural elements tossed into the fray. The actress described this series as “batsh*t crazy in the best possible way.” That’s an accurate statement, and Flanagan fans shall not be disappointed.

Additionally, the Usher dynasty will likely remind you of Succession‘s Roy family but without the artful “f*ck offs” and with a corrupt pharmaceutical giant standing in for a right-wing news network. Here’s the show’s synopsis:

With the official start of fall in most areas of the United States, outdoor music events are winding down. However, it’s never too early to begin planning next year’s festivities. That’s the precise frame of mind organizers of Sick New World are operating in. Yesterday (October 9), the official lineup for next year’s event has been revealed. Sick New World 2024, which is slated to take place on April 27, will feature headliner performances by Slipknot and System Of A Down.

Although this marks Slipknot’s first appearance at the festival. Last year, System Of A Down was the inaugural closing act following sets by Deftones, Evanescence, and Chevelle. Slipknot took to the band’s official X (formally Twitter) page to share the news by uploading the official flyer with ticketing information.

Other notable acts on the Sick New World 2024 lineup include A Perfect Circle, Alice In Chains, Bring Me The Horizon, Danny Elfman, Swans, Slowdive, and Primus. Last year’s event featured four performance stages. So far, set times and stage assignments have not been shared. On the other, Sick New World organizers have confirmed that the event will return to the Las Vegas Festival Grounds.

Christina Aguilera is getting a new Las Vegas residency, announced today (October 10). The shows will be held at The Venetian’s Voltaire Belle De Nuit venue, starting on New Year’s Eve weekend.

“I look forward to bringing Las Vegas a new show that fuses music, sophistication, and art in ways I have never performed before,” Aguilera shared in a statement. “What I love about the intimacy at Voltaire at The Venetian Resort is how up-close-and-personal I can be with the audience… a truly modern twist on the performance experience.”

The venue has been described as a “seductively cozy” one. Aguilera, according to Billboard, will deliver a career-spanning set. Voltaire’s founder, Michael Gruber, is currently aiming to provide “superstar artist experiences in Las Vegas” — with the “very talent” Aguilera being part of that vision. A few weeks ago, Kylie Minogue also announced that she would be kicking off her first residency at the same venue, performing starting November 3.

So far, Aguilera only has announced shows for December 30 and 31 of this year, but more dates will be revealed this Friday, October 13. While it’s unclear how long she’ll play there, fans should start prepping for early 2024. Tickets for the opening days will go on sale on Friday, with more information that can be found via Voltaire’s website.
