Stephen Colbert Went To Town On New House Speaker Mike Johnson For Believing ‘Early Humans Had Dinosaurs As Pets’

As Stephen Colbert fans know, the late night comedian spent years teaching Sunday school, so he had a lot to say when new Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said that the Bible represents his view on “any issue under the sun.” Not only that, but Johnson has direct ties to the infamous Creation Museum, which has some interesting stances on the age of the Earth.

As a Christian fundamentalist, Johnson actually thinks that humans and dinosaurs lived together despite fossil records to the contrary, and Colbert had a little fun with that belief

“Yes, many early humans had dinosaurs as pets ― it’s right there in The Book of Hanna-Barbera,” Colbert joked before reading a passage from the holy tome. “And the Lord spake to Hezekiah: have thou a yabba dabba doo time, a dabba doo time, we’ll have a gay old – wait, not that part!”

Again, as a devout Catholic, Colbert knows The Bible and he peppered Johnson with all of the things he’ll need to do to live a literal life according to the Bible.

Via HuffPost:

“Being biblically faithful is not easy for a guy from Louisiana ’cuz now he has to give up shrimp, crab, oysters and barbecue pork,” he said. “And I’m sure he’s gonna miss his wife when she has to be cast out of town during the time of her blood, only to be allowed to return when she brings two turtledoves to the tabernacle for the priest to sacrifice.”

However, the late night host noted that if Johnson truly is as Biblical as he claims to be, it should be a boon to the Left.

“If the Bible is his worldview on any issue, I don’t know why progressives are nervous,” Colbert said. “He’s clearly gonna ask the rich to sell all their possessions and give the money to the poor.”

You can watch Colbert dunk all over Johnson at the 5:03 mark below:

SZA & Drake’s ‘Slime You Out’ Collaboration Might’ve Been Sabotaged, Or So The Singer Questioned

Apparently, Nicki Minaj isn’t the only woman in music harboring resentment toward Drake over his latest solo album, For All The Dogs. Minaj’s long-awaited and frequently teased track with her Young Money alum didn’t make the final tracklist, so she dropped her own freestyle over a song that did appear. On the other hand, SZA’s collaboration with Drake did.

However, yesterday (October 30), in a sit-down with the Wall Street Journal, SZA questioned if Drake was back up to his Mean Girls’ Regina George-ish ways. When discussing “Slime You Out” with journalist Hunter Harris, SZA theorized that Drake might’ve sabotaged her.

“I just handed in the first draft to Drake, and he’s putting it on his album. I’m scared because I handed in the second vocals, and he didn’t use that. And now I’m like, ‘Are you trying to sabotage me?’ I know that’s not true. I literally know that’s not true, but that’s how bad I feel about my first draft. When things come from an effortless space, I almost can’t enjoy it,” said SZA.

Although she was sure to clarify that she was overthinking the scenario, fans online have verbalized their disappointment in the track. That certainly could’ve triggered SZA’s perfectionism. In June, SZA admitted to “punking out” of a guest appearance on Lil Tjay’s “Calling My Phone Remix” because she didn’t feel she could add anything to the record.

Does Metro Boomin & Future’s Album Have A Release Date?

Metro Boomin has had a busy year so far, but fans have been looking forward to one project as much as any other. Although he’s produced for the Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse soundtrack, a new Young Thug album, and even a symphony orchestra, what fans really want to know is when Metro’s new album with Future is coming. Future and Metro have a long working history that goes back to the Atlanta rapper’s second album Honest and includes smashes like “Jumpman” with Drake, “Mask Off,” and most recently “Superhero (Heroes & Villains)” from Metro’s latest album Heroes & Villains.

Well, I’ve got some bad news and some good news for those fans. The bad news is that the album does not yet have a release date. The good news is that per Metro’s last update, the joint album will be his top focus for the rest of the year. In an interview with Complex, he said, “My blinders on tunnel vision. All I can see right now is me and Future’s album. Nothing else until that’s out. When it’s a [release] date, the world will know.” This could also, of course, be bad or good news for ASAP Rocky fans, since Rocky’s album purportedly has heavy input from Metro; either this means that album is done or it’s on hiatus while Metro finishes his joint project with Future.

In the meantime, Metro and Future have been teasing the project all year, with Future calling it the “album of the year” in January and Metro playing an unreleased song during a set in June. That could bode well… after all, there are only two more months left in 2023 for it to earn the distinction Future bestowed (although he didn’t say which year, perhaps giving him some cushion for 2024.

Seth Meyers Was Blown Away By Taylor Swift Writing Her Own ‘Perfect ‘SNL’ Monologue’ Her First Time Hosting In 2009

Seth Meyers appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show yesterday (October 30), where the pair got to discussing Taylor Swift hosting Saturday Night Live back in 2009 — as Meyers had been a cast member at the time, and eventually, hosted himself too.

Specifically, Meyers praised Swift’s opening monologue, where she famously mocks some of her exes with a creative song and just an acoustic guitar on stage. He also revealed that she came up with the idea for it entirely on her own, and pitched it to him and Lorne Michaels.

“It really speaks to what a force of nature she is and the depths of her talent,” he shared. “But here’s a 19-year-old who is, again, nobody is really helping out. Nobody gave her a manual on how to do it. And yet, she came to us and said, ‘I wrote a song for the opening monologue.’ And I remember saying, ‘Oh God, that’s great.’ And she said, ‘Can I play it for you?’”

“She sings this song which is not only a beautiful song by a beautiful singer. It’s a perfect SNL monologue, fully formed,” Meyers added. “And it was, to this day, I’ve sort of never had a moment like that where someone brings you a fully gift-wrapped present and it’s exactly what you needed it to be.”

Check out the clip of Seth Meyers talking about Taylor Swift’s SNL monologue above.

Is ‘Lawmen: Bass Reeves’ An ‘1883’ Spinoff?

Paramount+ is firmly in the Taylor Sheridan business, and that’s readily apparent by the deluge of series from the prolific Yellowstone creator. Up next is Lawmen: Bass Reeves, a new anthology series whose first installment will focus on the real-life marshal played by David Oyelowo.

However, just because Lawmen is a Sheridan production, that doesn’t mean it’s connected to Yellowstone or its wildly popular 1883 spinoff. According to Lawmen creator and showrunner Chad Feehan, there was talk of linking the two series, but ultimately, it was better for Lawmen to stand on its own.

“There was conversations about a tie into 1883 before I was hired, and when I was hired I was given the freedom to craft the most compelling story that I could alongside the other writers,” Feehan told TV Insider. “I was given the opportunity, if there was a place to tie it to 1883, that was OK, but there was no obligation to do so. And so, we landed where we landed, which was our story takes place from roughly 1862 to 1877. And Bass primarily operates in [Native American] territory, which is modern day Oklahoma and Fort Smith, Arkansas. And so it didn’t feel natural or organic to bring in any of the 1883 characters to the story.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

From executive producers Taylor Sheridan and David Oyelowo comes the untold story of the most legendary lawman in the Old West: Bass Reeves. Lawmen: Bass Reeves, follows the journey of Reeves (Oyelowo) and his rise from enslavement to law enforcement as the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Despite arresting over 3,000 outlaws during the course of his career, the weight of the badge was heavy, and he wrestled with its moral and spiritual cost to his beloved family.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves premieres November 5 on Paramount+.

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Future Islands, The Gaslight Anthem, Wild Nothing, Katy Kirby, and more.

The Gaslight Anthem — History Books

This is one for the history books: The Gaslight Anthem are back. It has been nearly a decade since their last LP, 2014’s Get Hurt, and History Books is a stark reminder of why we all loved this band in the first place. From the heart-on-your-sleeve opener “Spider Bites” to the mordant shredding all over “Positive Charge,” the New Jersey rockers come back swinging.

Wild Nothing — Hold

Wild Nothing’s Jack Tatum hails from a certain era of indie-pop, a class including the likes of Beach Fossils, Deerhunter, and Real Estate. On Hold, his first album since 2018’s Indigo, the dream-pop musician, newly a father, sounds once again rejuvenated. “Dial Tone” recalls the filigreed melodies of 2012’s Nocturne, and “Alex” re-contextualizes Britpop-esque guitar in a shoegaze setting. It’s been a while since we’ve heard from him, and it’s encouraging to hear Tatum reinvigorated.

Future Islands — “The Tower”

Samuel T. Herring is a very busy man. From guest starring on a Billy Woods and Kenny Segal album to making his acting debut on the Apple TV+ horror series The Changeling, it’s astounding that he still has time to make music with his synth-pop band, Future Islands. Recently, they announced their forthcoming album, People Who Aren’t There Anymore, slated for release this January, alongside a new single: the glossy, fun, and relentlessly catchy “The Tower.” It also marks their first time working with mixing engineer Chris Coady since 2014’s Singles. If “The Tower” is any indication, then the new-wave revivalists continue an impressive streak.

Katy Kirby — “Table”

2021’s Cool Dry Place was a remarkable debut from the Nashville singer-songwriter Katy Kirby. It felt warm, inviting, and lived-in, demonstrating a poetic aptitude that belied the disarming simplicity of the music itself. After sharing the lovely “Cubic Zirconia” back in August, the new Anti- Records signee is about to share her sophomore offering, Blue Raspberry, this January. Kirby describes its new single and closing track, “Table,” as an anomaly, one that points toward a light at the end of the tunnel that is her “god-haunted past life.” Citing artists like Andy Shauf and Lomelda as key points of inspiration, Kirby is shaping up to release an early highlight of 2024, and the brief yet arresting “Table” is surefire evidence of that.

Grandaddy — “Watercooler”

If you like pedal steel and Californian indie rock, then chances are you’ll be really into Grandaddy’s new single, “Watercooler.” Braintrust Jason Lytle has stated that the forthcoming Blu Wav, a linguistic nod to the album’s blend of bluegrass and new wave, will include a lot more pedal steel. In that light, “Watercooler” is the perfect thesis statement.

The Serfs — Half Eaten By Dogs

On “The Dice Man Will Become,” the penultimate track from The Serfs’ Half Eaten By Dogs, the Cincinnati post-punks operate in a newly ferocious mode. Whereas most of their songs exhibit an icy, frigid aura, laden with synths and echoey vocals, The Serfs stomp forward at a blistering tempo. It’s among the most exciting pieces of music The Serfs have created to date; it’s a major departure from the rest of Half Eaten By Dogs, an album that meets the middle point between accelerated post-punk a la Deeper and sterile, gothy synth-rock in the vein of The Sisters of Mercy. Across this new record, The Serfs put their artistic growth on full display, showcasing their range and finesse alike.

Charly Bliss — “I Need A New Boyfriend”

Charly Bliss is back with their signature power-pop panache, albeit with a slight twist on their new single, “I Need A New Boyfriend.” Conjuring the zeitgeisty, sugarcoated delivery of groups like 100 Gecs and the How I’m Feeling Now milieu of the other Charli, “I Need A New Boyfriend” is an enthralling new step for the consistently great Brooklynites.

Kurt Vile — “This Time Of Night”

On a new split single featuring Aussie indie songwriter Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile covers Chastity Belt’s 2017 track “This Time Of Night.” In a press statement, Philly’s king of twang fondly recalls meeting Chastity Belt on Halloween 2015 in Amsterdam, and he felt that they were soul mates. As a celebratory gesture marking the 10th anniversary of Chastity Belt’s career, Vile’s cover of “This Time Of Night” is the ultimate gift.

Ragana — Desolation’s Flower

When you think of Olympia, Washington, you might think of indie bands like Sleater-Kinney, Beat Happening, or Bikini Kill. For a city that’s actually rainier than Seattle, the city’s most famous artists don’t quite reflect the dreariness of its environment. Ragana, the black metal duo comprising the mononymous members Coley and Maria, make music that feels as dark as their hometown’s skies. From the eight-plus-minute sprawl of the title track to bleak yet melodic “Winter’s Light Pt. 2,” Ragana’s debut for The Flenser, Desolation’s Flower, is a paean to unforgiving gloom.

Year Of The Knife — No Love Lost

2023 is the year of the Year Of The Knife. The Delaware quartet mixes metal and hardcore in a way that feels like seamless, miraculous alchemy. After surviving a near-fatal car accident as they were heading from Salt Lake City to Colorado Springs to play a show, they had to take time to recuperate and prioritize their health, especially front-woman Madi Watkins, who entered a medically induced coma. Consequently, they had to cancel their remaining tour dates and the rollout for their new album, No Love Lost. Fortunately, the album speaks for itself. With its combination of piercing screams, crunchy riffs, and battering drums, Year Of The Knife proves their mettle.

Matthew Perry’s Ex-Fiancée Looked Back On Their ‘Complicated’ Relationship With A Beautiful And Emotionally Gutting Tribute

The late Matthew Perry‘s life saw a series of incredible highs as well as lows, both of which he detailed in a 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing. One of those sets of highs and lows, presumably, arrived with his relationship, engagement, and breakup to literary manager Molly Hurwitz. Their romance lasted from 2018 to 2021, and upon breakup, Perry admitted, “Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them.” He had previously called Molly “the greatest woman on the face of the planet,” and the two were together while Perry recovered from his 2018 hospitalization, during which doctors gave him a 2% chance to live.

Understandably, Hurwitz didn’t speak out about Perry’s death immediately when the news broke over the weekend, but she did take to Instagram on Monday with a moving tribute about Perry’s rediscovery of his comedic brilliance. She also hinted at their complicated relationship with a nod towards her experience with Al Anon and Perry’s struggles with substance abuse:

He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was. And he really was very talented.

As the Friends reunion was approaching, we rewatched the show together. “F*ck, I was so good!!!…See what I did there???” We rewound and studied scenes. Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.

But, I obviously knew that man in a very different way, too. While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known. No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Al Anon, an invaluable resource for those who love someone struggling with this destructive disease.

Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace.

Hurwitz also posted a striking photo of Perry’s shadow, and there’s no mistaking that silhouette. As well, Perry’s Friends co-stars have also broken their silence on their family member’s passing. However, Perry’s own recent words made clear that he’d like to be first remembered for something other than the long-lived 1990s TV show that made him a household name.

A Taylor Swift Fan’s Viral Halloween Display Has Tombstones For Her Exes And Other Spooky Easter Eggs

Today (October 31), in celebration of Halloween, many procrastinating music lovers are putting together last-minute looks of their favorite entertainers. One of the most searched costume ideas is for “Sweeter Than Fiction” singer Taylor Swift. Some Swifties will head out to the local AMC movie theatres to catch the ticket special of Swfit’s The Era Tour concert film. A Boston-based die-hard supporter is offering an alternative plan for the evening.

CBS News local affiliate station WBZ reporters stopped by to peek at the Taylor Swift fan’s viral Halloween display. Outside of the Beacon Hill brownstone, the resident crafted several spooky easter eggs, including tombstones for each of the musician’s exes for the public to laugh at.

Although the accent pieces, such as the golden snake to symbolize Swift’s 2017 Reputation album and cascading blond wigs hanging overhead, the grave markers took the cake. Swift’s rumored ex-boyfriends, Joe Jonas, Calvin Harris, and Jake Gyllenhaal slants, can be found in the fan’s romantic graveyard. Just for safe measures, the fan crafted a mark for Swift’s current boo, Travis Kelce.

The couple is currently on good terms based on how quickly their romance has sprouted, but just in case things go sour, the fans left a message on the tombstone that read, “Will I be your endgame?” There’s no bad blood from the fan, of course, just cautious optimism.
