The Trailer For ‘Echo’ Showcases A Number Of Marvel Firsts (And The Return Of Wilson Fisk), Including A TV-MA Rating

Marvel’s next series is venturing where no Marvel show has gone before, to the land of “TV-MA” ratings. Maybe this is the Deadpool effect?

Echo, the upcoming superhero drama, will be the first Marvel series to receive the TV-MA rating for its gore and violence. But that’s not the only Marvel first. The show will be the first superhero series ever to feature a deaf and Native American lead, played by Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo. The character first appeared in Hawkeye.

Brad Winderbaum, the studio’s head of streaming, says that Echo will be darker than the Marvel you’re used to (and maybe a little tired of). “It’s a little on the grittier side for Marvel, and shows the breadth of what Marvel is capable of,” he explained (via The Hollywood Reporter). “It is sort of a new direction for the brand, especially for Disney+.”

The trailer wastes no time showing off that new direction, with Vincent D’Onofrio making his return as Wilson/Kingpin, who now wears an eye patch after being shot by Lopez in Hawkeye. So…there’s some literal bad blood here. The good news? Charlie Cox will also reprise his role as Daredevil ahead of his upcoming new series.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Streaming exclusively on Disney, the origin story of Echo revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.

Echo will also star Caske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Graham Greene, and Devery Jacobs. The show will premiere on January 10th on Disney+ and Hulu.

The Uncancellable Dolly Parton Thinks Cancel Culture Is ‘Terrible’ And Explained Her Decision To Collaborate With Kid Rock

By all accounts, Dolly Parton seems like perhaps the purest soul roaming Earth. The country icon and Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 2022 inductee still uses a fax machine to communicate (as of May 2022) with her goddaughter, Miley Cyrus. Her enduring commitment to philanthropy earned her the Bezos Courage And Civility Award and a $100 million check, promising to “do my best to do good things with this money.” And this May, she released “World On Fire,” the lead single from her Rockstar covers album, about politicians.

“World On Fire” was met warmly because Parton didn’t specify which politicians she was displeased with. In fact, she told Today that the song is about “All of ’em!” But as uncancellable as Parton is, she was on the receiving end of some side-eying when she collaborated with the frequently canceled Kid Rock — most recently of Bud Light controversy fame — on “Either Or” for Rockstar.

With The Hollywood Reporter, Parton discussed everything from turning down the Super Bowl halftime show to collaborating with Rock. She clarified that she and Rock worked on “Either Or” before his latest controversy, but she noted, “Somebody was talking to me the other day: ‘How could you do this [song] with Kid?’ I said, ‘Hey, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock. Just because I love Kid Rock don’t mean I don’t love you.’ I don’t condemn or criticize. I just accept and love.”

The 10-time Grammy winner continued, “Like I said, I had done that before, but I’d have probably still done it, because he is a gifted guy, and that song was about a bad boy; it was about a boy that was cheating and mistreating her. But like I say, I love everybody. I don’t criticize, I don’t condone nor condemn. I just accept them. But anyhow, just because I love you don’t mean I don’t love Kid Rock in that God way.”

This naturally led into a broader question about cancel culture from THR writer Mesfin Fekadu, which garnered yet another empathetic response from Parton, as excerpted below:

“I think that’s terrible. We all make mistakes. We don’t all get caught at it. But also when somebody makes a mistake, it depends on who they are. That’s what God is there for. Now, I happen to believe in God; I’m a faith-based person, so therefore I am able to see it like that. A lot of people don’t, but even still, everybody deserves a second chance. You deserve to be innocent until you’re proven guilty. Even when you’re proven guilty, if God can forgive you, so can I. If God can forgive you, we all should forgive one another.”

More perspective like this is guaranteed to keep flowing from Parton, who “would never retire” and rather “drop dead in the middle of a song on stage someday.”

‘Deadpool 3’ Director Shawn Levy Revealed The Ryan Reynolds Film Will Have A Huge Moment Shaped By ‘Return Of The Jedi’

With Deadpool 3 still a ways off from its May 2024 release (which will most likely be pushed even further back as the SAG-AFTRA strike continues), director Shawn Levy has been opening up about the highly-anticipated film that will officially see Ryan Reynolds‘ Merc with a Mouth join the MCU and bring Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine along for the ride.

In a new essay for Esquire, Levy revealed how he’s been looking back to the mother of all trilogy cappers for inspiration: Return of the Jedi. Levy reflected on seeing the film when it first arrived in theaters, and how he’s never forgotten the emotional reaction to one particular moment:

I vividly remember the scene in which Luke is hiding from Vader in the Emperor’s room and Vader gives the speech that ends with “If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps your sister will.” It was dead quiet. Pin-drop silence. Suddenly Vader has pushed the wrong button. Luke comes screaming out of the shadows and just goes to town in a light saber battle against Vader. The way that felt: The forty seconds of stillness from the audience, then the spectacle and emotion, is seared not just in my eyeballs but in my heart.

“That’s the essence of the blockbuster,” Levy continued. “When the tone is singular, when the themes are resonant, when the experience is connective, when the audience is reminded that the world is far bigger than ourselves, it creates a forever memory. I think that’s beautiful.”

According to Levy, there’s a key scene in Deadpool 3 where he made sure everyone was on board with how this was the film’s big Return of the Jedi moment.

“I pulled up that scene of Vader and Luke on my phone and restudied how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the tempo,” Levy said about addressing his stunt and action team. “The keen Star Wars fan will see the shot in my Deadpool movie that was inspired by a moment that I saw in a theater decades ago. That’s a forever memory. And that’s a treasure.”

Of course, it should be noted that Levy is developing a Star Wars movie of his own for Lucasfilm, and he’s definitely getting in some practice if he’s having Deadpool recreate scenes from the classic trilogy.

Deadpool 3 will slice into theaters on May 3, 2024.

The Top International Flight Deals Between Right Now And Christmas 2023

Well, folks. The holiday season is almost upon us. And other than being in collective denial about the end of another year approaching (how is it almost 2024?!), I think there’s one thing we can all agree on: we need a vacation. Pronto. So in the spirit of giving, I’ve collected the most fire flight deals from the U.S. to Europe, Latin America, and Asia all right here in one convenient place!

Thank me later. Or with a surprise Venmo or whatever.

Flight prices change daily, so click the booking link to get the most up-to-date offers and don’t come for me if it’s gone up! Also, remember to pack light because you’ll probably pay a hefty fee for a checked bag with some of these fares! I’ve been seeing fewer and fewer airlines include a carry-on, too. As usual, the criteria for this list are as few stops as possible and no torturously long layovers. Google Flights is my go-to website for the best flight deals, but be sure to book directly with the airline in the clickable links provided.

One last thing — always check Secret Flying for last-minute and surprise fares. Plus the X hashtag #errorfares.

Tony Hawk Nearly Starred In A ‘Space Jam’ Sequel Called (You Guessed It) ‘Skate Jam’

We were deprived of the Space Jam sequel that we deserved.

On a recent episode of Hot Ones, skateboarder Tony Hawk revealed that Warner Bros. reach out to him in the early 2000s about a skateboarding-themed follow-up to Space Jam titled, yup, Skate Jam. “I think that that’s the one that got away,” he told host Sean Evans.

According to Louder Sound, Hawk was presented with the idea “that it would be Skate Jam, much along the lines of Space Jam, with all the Looney Tunes characters. And then I was going to be the main real person.” Hawk met with producers at a resturant in Los Angeles International Airport, and he was told, “This is happening. Here are the script ideas, here’s the poster.” Hawk recalls thinking, “When is this going to happen?” The answer: never.

Hawk explained

“[They said], ‘When you get back, we’re going to finalize all the details,’ like, that’s set, it’s happening.’ Awesome! I get on the plane, go to Australia. In the meanwhile, they released Back in Action, which was a Looney Tunes film with Brendan Frasier, and apparently it didn’t do the numbers they had hoped. That was supposed to be their way to reintroduce Looney Tunes characters. By the time I got back from Australia, they weren’t even calling anymore. It was gone. It was just gone. It was more like, ‘What happened?! Let’s all meet up again! This is gonna be fun, right?!’ Yeah. Bummer.”

Don’t be mad at Looney Tunes: Back in Action. It’s not as good as a Joe Dante movie with Fraser, Steve Martin, and Joan Cusack could be, but it’s a million times better than Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Maybe Hawk’s new daughter-in-law can help make Skate Jam. You know it would have a sick soundtrack — as long as “Powerhouse” makes the cut.

You can watch Hawk’s Hot Ones episode above.

Earthgang’s ‘Blacklight’ Single Featuring Spillage Village Is A Radically Funky Soundtrack For Unconditional Acceptance

As their name suggests, the duo Earthgang is tapped into their worldly surroundings. This constant connective is often manifested in their releases, such as their introspective single “Die Today” and even on the pop-culture spectrum of “Bobby Boucher.” Their latest track, “Blacklight,” featuring Spillage Village, does the same.

Instead of focusing on themselves, the group uses the funky Nandish “Dish” Patel-produced record to create a radical soundtrack for unconditional acceptance of self.

“I know, sometimes you hate yourself / I know, sometimes you need some help, but, it’s hard to find / Slowly find yourself here in my bed / Confessin’ things while my fingers run through your hair / I ain’t gon’ diagnose you, I ain’t gon’ try to fix you / You could treat this present moment like a real-life Finsta / All the things you did that you could never tell your mom or sister / All that sh*t you pray about that weigh you down, yeah, I forgive you / What gets you wetter than acceptance? You ain’t gotta be no angel in my presence / We all got a past that points to where we headed / Ain’t it funny how your scars all point in my direction,” raps Johnny Venus.

Earthgang implores listeners to embrace themselves beyond their visible flawless but what only a blacklight can detect.

The track is the first offering from the group’s forthcoming project, Earthgang Vs. the Algorithm Vol. 2: ROBOPHOBIA. In a statement, Earthgang shared the inspiration behind the body of work. “There’s so much happening in the world. As we know, our inner state reflects our outer state. This record is for anyone having inner change, a metamorphosis, a period of feeling out of balance while you cocoon for your butterfly season,” read the note.

Listen to Earthgang’s new single “Blacklight” above.

Earthgang is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Author is causing debate over theory that we’ve ‘tricked’ ourselves into loving lobster

Novelist Jason K. Pargin has inspired an online food fight after his video about lobster received over 500,000 views on Tiktok and nearly 6 million on Twitter. Pargin believes that we’ve all been tricked into liking lobster and that people only like it because it’s considered high class.

Pargin is the author of the “John Dies at the End” and “Zoey Ashe” series and the former editor of Cracked.com.

“I don’t think anyone actually enjoys eating lobster. I think they’ve just been convinced that it’s a high-class food for a really specific reason,” Pargin says in his controversial video. He then describes how just a few centuries ago lobster was once used as prisoners’ food and ground into fertilizer.

But after the food developed a reputation for being hard to transport from the coastal areas inland and that it spoils quickly after being cooked, it began to be seen as a delicacy.

“So because it was difficult to mess with and because it had to be shipped live inside the country, away from the coast, it became known that lobster was difficult to obtain,” Pargin says in his video. “And because it’s difficult to obtain, it had to be expensive, and because it was expensive, we decided it was good.”

“You were eating lobster not because you enjoyed it but because you wanted it to be known to all who were watching you that you could afford lobster,” Pargin continues.

His final point was a real blow to those who only eat lobster if it’s drowned in butter. “You know what also tastes good when you dump it into a bucket of butter? Anything,” Pargin says.

The viral video sparked a hot debate on Twitter, where it appears that most people disagreed with Pargin—especially those who live in the northeast and enjoy lobster no matter how it’s prepared. Many had a problem with Pargin framing the argument from the limited American perspective.

Lobster is eaten worldwide and has been enjoyed by countless cultures since the prehistoric era. People enjoy lobster in places where it’s affordable and where it’s considered a delicacy. So that kills his argument that we’ve been duped into enjoying lobster simply because it’s expensive.

But Pargin is entirely correct when he claims that we value things more when they are scarce. In psychology, the concept is known as the scarcity effect.

“Scarcity is a pervasive condition of human existence,” Shahram Heshmat, Ph.D., writes in Psychology Today. “Everyday circumstances of limited resources (money and time) can make individuals experience a sense of scarcity. Scarcity functions like an obstacle to goal pursuit, which intensify the value of goal.”

Here’s what people are saying about Pargin’s videos on Twitter.

Sorry, Jason, history goes way past the 1800s.

Some swear they do not need to drown a lobster in butter to enjoy its flavor.

Many disagreed and shared why they love the cockroach of the seas.

Is lobster really just a butter-delivery system?

Some agree with Pargin that people only like lobster because it’s expensive.

Pargin’s argument makes sense. We value things harder to get, and anything dunked in butter tastes fantastic. But that doesn’t cover the fact that people enjoy lobster around the globe, regardless of its perceived scarcity. In the end, the real winners of this debate are those who don’t like lobster. Right now, a pound of Maine lobster goes for up to $80 a pound. That’s an expensive night out at the local fish joint.
