People kept telling me to watch ‘Bluey.’ I still was not prepared.

I have a confession to make. I’m 48 years old, my youngest child is in high school and I can’t stop watching “Bluey.”

For the uninitiated, “Bluey” is a kids’ cartoon from Australia aimed at 5 to 7-year-olds. It’s been nearly a decade since my household has seen that demographic, so when people kept telling me I should watch “Bluey,” my reaction was basically, “Yeah, I’ve already done my kiddie show time, thankyouverymuch.”

Then my almost-15-year-old started watching it just to see what the fuss was about. And as I started tuning in, I saw why people love it so much. I figured it was going to be a wholesome show with some good lessons for kids, and it is.

But it’s also laugh-out-loud hilarious.

As I got sucked deeper and deeper down the “Bluey” hole, I also saw why so many adults say the show is healing their inner child. It doesn’t just have good lessons for kids; some episodes are a masterclass in creative, engaged, positive parenting. Now I’m hooked, along with the rest of my family of 40-somethings and young adults. We even have favorite episodes that we rewatch, for goodness sake.

So what is it that makes “Bluey” such a beloved show for all ages?

The kid actors are fantastic. Seriously, so darn funny.

The children who play 6-year-old Bluey, her 4-year-old sister, Bingo, and their various cousins and friends are outstanding. Their voices are cute, but they’re also top notch comedians.

One of my personal favorite bits on the show is when the kids pretend to be grannies. Here’s a clip with Bluey, Bingo and their cousin, Muffin, pretending to be grannies at their neighbor’s yard sale.

It gets even funnier when the “grouchy granny” encounters an actual, real-life grouchy granny who wants to buy the granny mobile and haggles with her. (We’ve watched this episode four times. It only gets funnier.)

The parents teach lessons through imaginative play

The clip below shows how Bandit (Bluey and Bingo’s dad) creatively uses a unicorn puppet to drive home the importance of good manners and personal care habits when Bluey won’t stop chewing with her mouth open.

Using characters that struggle with whatever a kid needs to learn is a great way to help drive home a lesson. And doing it with silliness and creativity makes the learning process both enjoyable and effective.

Also, the parents’ love for each other shines through in the show in adorable ways.

The parents share their own learnings along the way

Bluey episodes are short—the full episode below is less than 7 minutes—and it’s amazing how much they can squeeze into them. Here, Bluey’s mom teaches Bluey not to compare herself to others by sharing her own comparison story from when Bluey was a baby, which also includes a lesson for the parents who may be watching as well. It also tugs right at the heartstrings at the end.

I’m just consistently amazed at how well the show executes on every level.

It’s therapeutic—literally.

For folks with positive childhoods, the show is nostalgic and comforting. For those with tough childhoods, the show can feel healing. And for people who raising their own kids, it can be a resource to help them be better parents.

My colleague (and Licensed Clinical Social Worker) Jacalyn Wetzel says she recommends “Bluey” to clients who are having a hard time with parenting.

“When parents of young children mention that they’re struggling with being able to emotionally regulate through their child’s tantrums, outside of talking to them about ways children express unmet needs, I often recommend the cartoon ‘Bluey,'” she says. “Bluey behaves very much like a typical preschooler, which sometimes means she accidentally pushes buttons or does something wrong. The way her parents interact with her in those moments are great examples of acknowledging a child’s emotions and responding with kindness, understanding and age appropriate terms.”

The show includes real-life parenting moments that can be hard to navigate, so she encourages parents to watch how the parents interact with Bluey and Bingo. “Parenting doesn’t come with a handbook but ‘Bluey’ is helping those that maybe didn’t have the best example of it growing up, and that’s special,” she says.

It’s just a near-perfect show in almost every way. There’s even some silly potty humor if that’s your jam. (See what I mean? A little something for everyone.)

You can watch full seasons of “Bluey” on Disney + and find clips and some full episodes the “Bluey” YouTube channel.

The Best New Hip-Hop This Week

The best new hip-hop this week includes albums, videos, and songs from Bas, Flo Milli, Sexyy Red, and more.

We’ve made it, y’all. The year is almost over, and although that means the release of new music may slow to a trickle in coming weeks — from major labels, at least — there will still be new releases in hip-hop, which has always done its own thing.

To start the week, Sexyy Red released the ratchet “Free My N****” video from her Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe) (more on that later):

Baby Keem shared the trailer for his The Melodic Blue film:

Lil Wayne linked up with reggae legends Buju Banton and Shabba Ranks in the Book Of Clarence cut “Hallelujah Heaven“:

And Flo Milli told listeners to “Never Lose Me“:

Here is the best of hip-hop this week ending December 1, 2023.

Albums/EPs/Mixtapes

Antha Pantha — Feline Season

Antha Pantha

The Harlem rapper made her impressive debut on longtime friend ASAP Ferg’s EP Floor Seats a couple of years ago and follows up with an impressive debut album today. Ferg makes two guest appearances as does HuntDawgg on the previously shared single “Brick By Brick.”

AZ — Truth Be Told

az truth be told
AZ

The Brooklyn rap vet has been incredibly productive in recent years — perhaps he’s making up for the slow pace of his releases during ’90s. In any case, fans of the classic boom-bap sound will be more than satisfied with this outing, which features fellow longtime rap mainstays Fat Joe, Pharaohe Monch, and Mumu Fresh.

Erica Banks — Real Rap B****

Erica Banks

The Dallas rapper has been on a mission over the past couple of years to prove her rap bonafides. It’s safe to say that she’s done that many times over, but hey, if you’ve got a good thing going, why stop now? Although Banks doesn’t appear to be completely clear of her record label (unsurprising, given… you know), she’s remains laser-focused on her lyrical mission with some help from fellow rising stars Gloss Up and K Carbon.

Sexyy Red — Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe)

sexyy red hood hottest princess deluxe
Sexyy Red

The recent practice of immediately follow up a successful project with a “deluxe” edition that could be a whole new project of its own might be questionable to some, but fortunately, it delivers 11 new tracks of hip-hop’s latest it-girl’s raunchy rhymes. Can’t be mad at that.

Singles/Videos

BabyDrill — “Watchin Now”

BabyDrill has been on a roll lately. The Young Nudy-affiliated Atlanta rapper has raised his profile with some big-name collaborations, linking up with The Kid Larry, Latto, and Quavo in recent months. Here we’ve got a new single from his upcoming project ScoreGod, with a muted nihilistic overview of the city’s trap scene.

Bas — “179 Deli” Feat. AJ Tracey

The Queens rapper steps outside his comfort zone on the latest single from his upcoming album We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re F*cked Up, adopting the popular Jersey Club sound with his own usual soulful twist.

Erick The Architect — “Shook Up” Feat. Joey Bada$$ & FARR

The Flatbush Zombies mastermind is following in his bandmate’s footsteps, preparing to release a new album, I’ve Never Been Here Before. Although the wide-ranging tracklist promises a variety of sounds, here, he sticks to a soulful, introspective lane befitting his role as the thinker of the crew.

Latto, Flo Milli, Monaleo, Maiya The Don, Mello Buckzz — “All-Women Cypher”

It’s not technically a new song, but it’s hard to overlook XXL‘s latest take on one of the publication’s fan-favorite features. There are no weak links here, just a fine display of the lyrical talent the modern generation of female rappers possesses. Pull this up next time some jerk tells you “women can’t rap.”

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Will There Be A Second Season Of ‘Justified: City Primeval’?

Justified City Primeval
FX

Justified, also known as the crime show that helped Character Actress Margo Martindale secure her first Emmy, was a pretty successful show for FX. The series was led by Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens and his spiffy cowboy hat, and it ran for six seasons before wrapping up in 2015. And then, in true Peak TV fashion, the show was revitalized for another story. It’s just how these things go now.

FX’s Justified: City Primeval, based on Elmore Leonard’s crime novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, premiered in July with favorable reviews and an even larger cowboy hat, making the show a success. The limited series ended on a high note, but Olyphant is open to returning again, hopefully alongside Walton Goggins.

Showrunner Michael Dinner told Variety that there is still a possibility for more Justified, and everyone else is on board. “It’s really up to FX and what their needs are,” Dinner said. “Tim [Olyphant] would like to do it, Walton [Goggins] would like to do it. If we have the opportunity to do one more rodeo, it’d be awesome,” he explained.

Not only would it be awesome, but it seems like the principal cast is interested, including Goggins and Olyphant. We are one step closer to that Santa Clarita Diet revival we’ve all been waiting for.

The Worst Own Goal You’ll Ever See Came In The German Second Division

germany own goal
Twitter

There is no crueler moment in sports than scoring an own goal. Initially, there’s the shock of the ball hitting the back of the net. Then, there’s an overwhelming sense of confusion that you’ve done the one thing — putting the ball in your own net — that you wanted to prevent. Finally, there’s a lasting shame that you’ve completely changed the match with one unlucky touch. An unfortunate Hamburg SV goalkeeper during a 2. Bundesliga match against FC St. Pauli suffered all three stages of an own goal when his defender played an unassuming ball back to him and he scuffed it into his own net.

Scoring an own goal while your back is to the goal and you’re trying to play a ball forward should be impossible. So while this keeper, whose name is Daniel Heuer Fernandes, may feel bad about the own goal, he can take solace in knowing it was the own goal of a lifetime. From a separate angle, you can see he was betrayed by poor field conditions that caused the ball to take a small bounce right before he strikes it.

A subpar pitch can make even the best players look pedestrian. However, the St. Pauli fans in the stands had to wonder how the opposing keeper managed to strike the ball backwards into the roof of his own net, particularly considering that Heuer Fernandes is legitimately one of the best goalkeepers in all of Germany with the ball at his feet. This wider angle shot makes the goal look like it should be on a Looney Tunes reel.

Although this own goal put Hamburg down 2-0, they managed to respond with two goals of their own to get out of there with a 2-2 draw. The clip will live forever, but at least the keeper can take the result as a consolation.

Macaulay Culkin And Catherine O’Hara Shared A Sweet ‘Home Alone’ Reunion At His Hollywood Walk Of Fame Ceremony

When Macaulay Culkin learned he’d be honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he knew exactly who he wanted to introduce him: His Home Alone mom and Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara. The actress was delighted at the opportunity and was immediately firing jokes when asked about her ceremonial duties.

“As a very neglectful fake mother, I’m very glad that he’s given me another chance to show up for him,” O’Hara quipped before gushing about what it was like working with Culkin on the hit film that instantly skyrocketed him to fame.

Via Variety:

“I’d seen him in ‘Uncle Buck’ with dear John Candy and thought, ‘Where did this beautiful little boy come from?’” she recalls. “He was most obviously gifted with a beautiful face, but he was also a really natural actor. He was so relatable and real.”

Working with him as a co-star, O’Hara marveled at how Culkin fully and seemingly effortlessly embodied his character. “It was as if this real boy, Kevin, was surrounded by actors and just went along with it for the fun.”

What impressed O’Hara the most is how Culkin never sought the spotlight even after becoming the biggest child star on the planet.

“He was cool, he was a kid, but he was the reason it was this hit. How many adults have ever been subjected to that kind of adoration?” she told Variety. “He never seemed he was in show business to build a worldwide fan club.”

The Fun Police At AMC Issued A Very Specific List Of Guidelines For Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ Film Screenings

beyonce
Getty Image

Sorry, BeyHive, but if you’re going to catch a screening of Beyoncé’s new movie Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, there are some rules you’re going to have to follow. Knowing how the singer’s fans went all-out to see the actual tour concerts on which the film is based, AMC Theaters wants to keep screenings enjoyable for those who just want to see a movie without the extras (those party poopers).

On its website, AMC has posted a “What To Know Before The Show” page encouraging theater attendees to dress up and show their Renaissance spirit, but also requested some decorum.

Obviously, the theater chain doesn’t want viewers taking photos or recording during the movie (which will undoubtedly happen anyway), but also notes that if parts of your outfit might block the screen, such as headwear, angel wings, or other accessories, you should take them off. Also, because it is a musical film, AMC appears to be okay with singing and dancing along, so long as the exits remain clear and other guests aren’t being prevented from seeing the screen.

The film is almost as long as Avengers: Endgame with a runtime of two hours and 48 minutes, so AMC recommends planning those bathroom breaks accordingly (and, it should go without saying, rationing the extra large soda). To see the full list check out AMC’s guidelines here.

When Does The ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ Finale Come Out?

Squid Game The Challenge
Netflix

There was a time when Netflix was against releasing anything in batches. Instead, they wanted you to consume several hours of media in one sitting. Slowly but surely, this became maddening and overwhelming, so they started releasing things in two parts, so you can be overwhelmed twice over a few months time frame. Now, Netflix is going even further by dropping things in three parts. What’s next?! A weekly TV show?!

Squid Game: The Challenge is the game show based on the popular gorey drama series Squid Game, also known as Netflix’s biggest asset right now. The gameshow features nearly 500 players participating in challenges and competitions, all in the hopes of taking home $4.56 million. The show became controversial during filming, leading some contestants to actually seek compensation over various injuries. But…the people are watching it, so it will likely get a second season.

The first five episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge were released in the beginning of November, with the second batch landing on Netflix earlier this week. Episode 10, the finale, is slated to drop on December 6th.

Meanwhile, season two of Squid Game is currently in production, so maybe we should just let that be the only Squid Game we need.

When Will The Detroit Pistons Get Another Win?

cade cunningham
Getty Image

The Detroit Pistons are putting together a season of losing the likes of which we haven’t seen for some time in the NBA. After a 2-1 start, Detroit has lost 16 straight games, successfully pulling off No-Win November by losing every single game all month and now head into December with fans wondering when they’ll see another win. Vibes are not great in Detroit, where Monty Williams has questioned his team’s desire to get better. They have been particularly terrible in the fourth quarter, blowing a few chances at wins.

Part of the problem the Pistons now face is they are playing so poorly they are now on the radar of every team on their schedule. Typically, bad teams don’t have the focus of the top of the league, and that is why we often see some very weird regular season results where the worst teams beat the best. The Pistons nearly pulled one of those wins off at the beginning of November, when they blew a fourth quarter lead in Milwaukee against the Bucks.

However, every team the Pistons play is now determined not to be the team that snaps their losing streak. That makes it far more difficult on Detroit, because they won’t have as much of a chance to sneak up on a team and get a random win. On top of that, as we saw in the tank matchup of the year earlier this week between the Pistons and Wizards, the worst teams in the league see Detroit as their opportunity to get a W, and will send out their best lineups to ensure that happens — Washington rode with a veteran-heavy rotation against Detroit, simply to snap their own losing streak.

Bojan Bogdanovic’s return (which was supposed to be Thursday but then got scrapped) should help some, but this team is still a mess and they might need some help in the form of a rest advantage night to get it done. With that in mind, I wanted to look at the Pistons schedule to figure out where a possible win could be, and below I’ve highlighted the three best chances for the Pistons to end their winless streak in December.

Vs. Cavaliers (Dec. 2): It’s possible Detroit can snap their losing streak in their first game of December, as they face a Cavs team that doesn’t seem to be firing on all cylinders, just lost to Portland, and has rumblings of some locker room discord. The problem is, that Blazers loss should wake up the Cavs and have them ready to get right against a bad Detroit team. I’d give Detroit a 25 percent chance here, maybe 30 percent if Bojan actually plays.

Vs. Grizzlies (Dec. 6): This might be the best chance for the Pistons to get a win this month. Both teams will have three days off between games thanks to the In-Season Tournament, so we will be getting them as fresh as can be. I don’t know how much that helps Detroit, but maybe some rare in-season practice time can help them figure some stuff out. Memphis is very bad right now and will still be missing a lot of key guys when this game happens. We’ll call this a coin flip game, which is about as good as it gets for Detroit. The problem is, if they don’t win this one, the stretch following that is very tough with: Pacers, Sixers, Sixers, Bucks, Hawks.

Vs. Jazz (Dec. 21): Utah will be on a road back-to-back, having played in Cleveland the night before, meaning this is the first real rest advantage spot for Detroit and it’s against a bottom-half team. If they haven’t gotten a win by this point, they’ll on a 23-game losing streak at this point and this figures to be another coin flip spot. If they don’t get this one, it’s likely not until the calendar flips to 2024 that they get on the board again, and the 2011-12 Bobcats’ record might be threatened.

It Looks Like A Bhad Bhabie Baby Is On The Way As Her New Photos Seemingly Confirm She’s Pregnant

Instead of catching “Campy” rapper Bhad Bhabie outside, based on her latest announcement, she was spending her time in more intimate ways. Today (December 1), Bhabie revealed she’s pregnant with her first child. Without much detail, the viral personality posted two selfies on her official Instagram page, where her baby bump was on display.

In the comment section, followers congratulated her on the exciting news. Some even injected humor into their well-wishes by pointing out that she would need to change her stage to Bhad Mhommy.

Bhabie did not share any further information about the pregnancy, but based on her only other upload, many assume that the unborn child’s father is her boyfriend and fellow rapper X Game LV. The pair have been spotted together several times, including at a few industry events and basketball games.

In April, the pair made a piece of their love permanent with matching tattoos. For Bhabie, this would be her very first child and their first child together. However, in a post shared on LV’s official Instagram, he revealed that he already has a young son from a previous relationship.

With the 20-year-old preparing for motherhood, this could be the end of her OnlyFans journey.

Bhad Bhabie is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
