Jason Momoa Refutes Any ‘RBF’ Allegations Coming His Way And Promises Emotional Biker Conversations In ‘On The Roam’

Jason Momoa On The Roam
HBO/Max

Aquawho? Jason Momoa is not talking about a certain DCEU (RIP) hero unless someone else brings it up. It’s hard to blame him after enduring a plot that sees Arthur Curry taste pee thrice, and an “I don’t know [him]” vibe emerges in a new Hollywood Reporter interview, in which he declares, “That job’s been done for I don’t know how long” and “I’m out here doing other sh*t.”

That “sh*t” includes an upcoming Max series, On The Roam, where the former Khal Drogo will do a few of his favorite things: ride bikes and (maybe) crush some beers. Actually, the beer might be waiting for another project, which has to do with his excitement to soon direct a Guinness commercial. He also co-directs and stars in On the Roam, and the series promises to go far beyond the usual stereotypical view of bikers as tough dudes who display only tough guy facial expressions. Actually, these dudes will have very “emotional conversations,” and Momoa discussed why the series goes there and also pushed back on his kids’ assertion that he suffers from RBF:

All those men are the most heartfelt, beautiful men. Maybe our faces don’t look like that. My kids are always like, “You have that resting b*tch face.” I’m like, “No, that’s just my stare and my forehead. I’m happy!” If you meet those guys, you’re going to laugh and be accepted right in.

RBF happens to the best and worst of us, my dude. There’s also no word on whether Momoa will reprise his recent “naked bike ride” routine for this series, so you’ll simply need to tune in and find out.

The On The Roam logline calls the series “an eight-part cinematic docu-series following Jason Momoa as he travels the country chasing art, adventure, and friendship through the lens of craftsmanship.” The show debuts on February 8 with two episodes and weekly followups, and the trailer can be seen below.

Now that we’re a couple weeks into 2024, the highly anticipated new album releases are starting to roll in. One of the first of the year is 21 Savage’s American Dream. The album follows 2018’s I Am > I Was as the rapper’s first solo project in six years. If you’re a Spotify user, here’s what to know about when you can stream the album.

So far, Savage has kept info about the album pretty close to the vest. No singles from the album have been released so far and he has yet to reveal a tracklist or any featured artists. He did share the cover art recently, though.

He also unveiled a trailer for his movie American Dream: The 21 Savage Story, featuring Donald Glover and Stranger Things star Caleb McLaughlin playing him at different points in his life.

The ‘Ted’ Reviews Are Mixed For Seth MacFarlane’s New Series That Feels Like A ‘Family Guy’ Retread

Ted Season 1
Peacock

When Ted the movie arrived in 2012, it did surprisingly well at the box office and earned an almost cult status thanks to Seth MacFarlane‘s blend of screwball humor. The sequel, however, did not do as well and made it clear that Ted was a one-hit wonder albeit, a solid one. After that, the franchise quietly went away — until now.

Streaming on Peacock, Ted is an all-new prequel series that centers on the foul-mouthed teddy bear while his best John Bennett (Max Burkholder) is not the strapping Mark Wahlberg, but a 16-year-old high school student trying to navigate life in the ’90s. As for how well this premise works is debatable.

While some critics eventually warmed to the Ted series, the overwhelming consensus is that retreads a lot of the same ground as Family Guy, for better or worse. There’s also an “anti-woke” air about Ted that MacFarlane is definitely aware of and tries to thread a very delicate needle in the process. Whether he pulls it off marks a divide amongst critics.

You can see what the Ted reviews are saying below:

Angie Han, The Hollywood Reporter:

The bad news about Peacock‘s Ted prequel, also called Ted, is that all of its worst instincts are apparent from the jump. For one thing, its premiere clocks in at 50 minutes — not inherently an unreasonable run time, but a baffling one for a TV outing that otherwise unfolds like a half-hour sitcom. For another, that near-hour is front-loaded with the show’s most self-consciously “offensive” material: hoary jokes about derogatory terms and racist stereotypes, all delivered with a smirk that’s daring you, just daring you, to get outraged by any of it. But if you can push past the initial tedium, the good (or at least less bad) news about Ted is that the episodes that follow represent a marked improvement.

Nick Schager, The Daily Beast:

MacFarlane and company rattle off non-stop one-liners, and if a lot of them miss their marks, those that hit their targets elicit genuine belly laughs—and are all the more cathartic for feeling more than a tad wrong. In particular, MacFarlane repeatedly has John extend his jokes with Ted by taking them into bizarro terrain, and it’s there—when logic flies totally out the window, leaving behind only stream-of-consciousness lunacy—that the material is most amusing.

Jarrod Jones, The A.V. Club:

Ted takes us back to the age of Sega Genesis, Married… With Children, the Jerky Boys (ask your uncle), and casual racism. But before you take to social media to itemize all of the series’ offensive malfeasances, don’t bother: The series has installed a failsafe for whenever John’s “Boston racist” father Matty (Scott Grimes) flies off the handle (which is often) or when John’s dear-hearted mother Susan (Alanna Ubach) gently dismisses his tirades, in the form of John’s live-in cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham), who’s here to set things politically correct.

Ryan Leston, IGN:

The jokes in Ted are much of what we’ve seen and heard before – outrage is the name of the game, and a lot of the humor is derived from the worn-out gag of a cute, cuddly teddy bear saying some truly awful stuff. There are punchlines about Jewish people, cannibalism, John Belushi, and even one joke you’ve definitely heard before in the Paul Rudd-Seann William Scott vehicle Role Models. Again, if you’ve watched Family Guy, you know what to expect, and that’s the biggest problem.

Nate Richard, Collider:

Even with only seven episodes, the Ted series does start to wear out its welcome, with the storytelling becoming repetitive and predictable. While it is never boring by any means, one season may have been enough. There’s only so much you can do with a franchise about a cursing, pot-smoking teddy bear who lives in Boston before it becomes tired. The Ted movies aren’t classics by any means, they’re the perfect kind of guilty pleasure comedies that you can just throw on the TV, laugh, and relax. That’s exactly what the series feels like as well.

Ben Travers, IndieWire:

I’m not sure why “Ted” is seven episodes long, instead of six, eight, or 12. I’m not sure why each of the first five episodes is shorter than the last, dropping from 51 minutes to 33, before ballooning back up to the low 40s for its final two entries. I’m not sure why this part of Ted’s (or John’s) story needed to be told, aside from Peacock needing programming and MacFarlane needing to produce something bigger than “The Orville” to justify his $200 million overall deal at Universal. But I am pretty sure that any life wished into Ted a decade ago is all but gone now. And no one seems to give a shit.

Ted Season 1 is available for streaming on Peacock.

Bill Belichick Is Leaving The Patriots After 24 Years, But Wants To Continue Coaching

bill belichick

After months of speculation, there will in fact be a coaching change for the New England Patriots, adding more fuel to the fire of what is already a wild coaching carousel in the NFL.

The team will hold a press conference at noon to make official what was reported on Thursday morning by Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero, and Adam Schefter, which is that Bill Belichick is parting ways with the franchise after 24 years at the helm — a day after fellow coaching legends Pete Carroll and Nick Saban stepped aside in Seattle and Tuscaloosa.

Belichick’s tenure in New England is the best in NFL history, as he won 6 Super Bowl titles (and played in three more), creating the longest lasting dynasty the NFL has seen — with a lot of help from Tom Brady and some all-time great players on both sides of the ball. Belichick’s Patriots went 266-120 in the regular season and 30-12 in the playoffs, a truly remarkable record — especially considering some struggles over the past few years.

As Schefter added, unlike Nick Saban, Belichick is not retiring but will seek out other coaching opportunities, with the Atlanta Falcons (somewhat ironically) expected to pursue the legendary coach for its vacancy.

There have been questions about whether Belichick still has “it” when it comes to coaching a team in this current era. The biggest issue his recent Pats teams had were never being able to replace Brady at quarterback, shuffling between veterans and young players, none of whom could run the offense successfully. Without a quality signalcaller, the Patriots offense has floundered near the bottom of the league in most statistical categories since Brady’s departure. Wherever Belichick goes next, we’ll learn whether that was partially a stubbornness of Belichick to not change how he wants his team to play, or if it was simply an issue of never bringing in the right quarterback.

On the flip side, finding that quarterback will be one of the biggest tasks for whoever comes in to take over for Belichick in New England — both as coach and as general manager. Current defensive coordinator Jerod Mayo and former Patriots player Mike Vrabel, who was recently fired from Tennessee, are the heavy favorites to land the New England coaching job given their ties to the organization. The Pats will have plenty of competition on the market, as they become the eighth team to open up a coaching vacancy this offseason as a quarter of the league will change coaches.

Indie Mixtape 20: @ Stay Innovative On Their 5-Track EP ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, @’

At @ band 2024

What do you get when you combine folk music, hyperpop, and terrible SEO? The answer is @ (pronounced “at”), the musical duo of Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak. But no matter how hard it is to find the band in a Google search, their innovative music has won over indie fans and critics alike.

@’s 2023 debut album Mind Palace Music was written almost entirely remote by sending each other snippets and voice notes via iMessage, resulting in a project hailed for its inventiveness. The band describes their sound as hyperfolk,” which is an all-around accurate description of their music (their new track “Soul Hole” sounds like a hyperpop artist covering Dirty Projectors).

Now, less than a year later, @ are prepping the release of a batch of new songs in the form of the forthcoming EP Are You There God, It’s Me, @, which drops Friday via Carpark. Much like Mind Palace Music, Are You There God, It’s Me, @ seamlessly blends analog and digital elements with lyrics inspired by imagery of AI and computers, like on the trance-like single “Webcrawler.”

Ahead of Are You There God, It’s Me, @, Filipczak and Rose sit down with Uproxx to talk David Bowie, creamed spinach, and dropping acid in our latest Q&A.

What are four words you would use to describe your music?

Filipczak: I’ve heard this one.

It’s 2050 and the world hasn’t ended and people are still listening to your music. How would you like it to be remembered?

Rose: If people are still listening to our music in 2050 then it’s been pretty successful, so however it’s being remembered is just fine.

Who’s the person who has most inspired your work, and why?

Filipczak: The other bandmate, for obvious reasons.

Where did you eat the best meal of your life and what was it?

Rose: I eat the best meal of my life several times a year at an Ethiopian restaurant called Abyssinia in West Philly. I get the Abyssina 2 which is a combo platter and I have never once in my life gotten sick of eating it.

Tell us about the best concert you’ve ever attended.

Filipczak: Sun Ra Arkestra at Fields Fest.

What song never fails to make you emotional?

Filipczak: “Life On Mars” by David Bowie.

What’s the last thing you Googled?

Rose: Creamed spinach.

Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever crashed while on tour?

Filipczak: On a pile of ripped up foam in the same room we played, house show in Richmond.

What’s your favorite city in the world to perform and what’s the city you hope to perform in for the first time?

Filipczak: Baltimore, MD obviously! We’re playing a ton of European cities for the first time next month — we’ve also never played Los Angeles.

What’s one piece of advice you’d go back in time to give to your 18-year-old self?

Rose: “Do not drop 2 whole tabs of acid at once on that one time.”

What’s one of your hidden talents?

Filipczak: Object repair.

If you had a million dollars to donate to charity, what cause would you support and why?

Rose: I don’t really like this question because neither of us have a million dollars, but there’s an active genocide going on in Gaza, and we should all be doing what we can, funds or not, to continue working towards a ceasefire and bringing an end to apartheid against Palestinians.

What are your thoughts about AI and the future of music?

Rose: I want to be careful with this, because I don’t really know much about in which ways AI is on its way to contributing to the future of music. We also have to accept that an AI driven world is coming for us whether we want it to or not. But I think that implementing AI in the elements of music making directly related to the writing or recording would probably flatten the dynamics that come about through accidents and experimentation. Those are the details in music that often end up being most potent in connecting to the listener, and I think that minimizing the space to create those details would be very bad for the future of music. However, if we’re talking about using AI to make DAW processing more efficient that could be useful.

You are throwing a music festival. Give us the dream lineup of 5 artists that will perform with you and the location it would be held.

Filipczak: Wolf Eyes, Black Dice, Chris Weisman, Horse Lords, Bugs and Rats, at the Elk’s Lodge in Cambridge, MA (tried to keep this one fairly realistic / possible)

Who’s your favorite person to follow on social media?

Rose: Right now it’s @jeremyfragrance on Instagram.

What’s the story behind your first or favorite tattoo?

Rose: Not my first, but my 3rd(?) tattoo was done in 2017 by my friend Jen in a bedroom that Stone was subletting in Boston, at this magical house on Union Street. There was a snow storm going on, and Stone was playing through the entirety of Hallowed Ground by Violent Femmes for us on his laptop. I was surprised to find a half hour field recording of that moment about 2 years ago on Stone’s Tascam. The tattoo is of this little creature with horns playing a tom, or maybe eating a salad.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Rose: Rushing to load in on time.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Rose: Flick from A Bug’s Life.

You have a month off and the resources to take a dream vacation. Where are you going and who is coming with you?

Filipczak: This is basically what’s happening with Europe tour next month, so we’ll just shout out our amazing band, Nino Soberon and Nina Ryser.

What is your biggest fear?

Rose: Not finding peace and fulfillment in this lifetime.

Are You There God, It’s Me, @ is out 1/12 via Carpark. Find more information here.

Donald Glover And Maya Erskine Fall In Love (And Dispose Of Bodies Together) In The ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’ Trailer

“Who needs this show?” That was the question posed in an open letter by Francesca Sloane, the creator of the show in question, Mr. & Mrs. Smith. “In a culture heavily inundated with remakes, this was a reasonable reaction. No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie,” she wrote. “But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

Sloane added, “On our show, we go on the journey of seeing these two ordinary people become extraordinary. We watch them become stronger spies but more vulnerable humans. We hope that you laugh. We hope that it makes you feel something. We hope that you enjoy the big swing.”

To go back to the initial question, who needs a sexy, thrilling, funny spy show starring Atlanta‘s Donald Glover and Blue Eye Samurai‘s Maya Erskine? The answer: me. And probably a lot of other people, too. You can watch the first full-length trailer — featuring explosions, admissions of love, and a dead body in a bathtub — for Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith above.

Here’s more:

In this version, two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?

All eight episodes of Mr. & Mrs. Smith premiere on Amazon Prime Video on February 2nd.
