‘Bridgerton’ Season 3: Everything To Know For The New Season Including The Release Date & Cast

Bridgerton Season 3
Netflix

Bridgerton‘s second season brought the need for smelling salts in equal proportion to the first outing, which was actually a surprise considering the show’s newfound Duke-less state. The show is gearing up for the third round of corset-bound adventures based upon Julia Quinn’s book series and plenty of (thank you, John Oliver) “jizzing in blankets.”

Following a diversion into Queen Charlotte’s past, the show has reemerged in the “present” (19th Century Regency era) to take on yet another Bridgerton’s son’s journey towards marriage. It’s been quite a wait for viewers, so let’s work through what to expect from the third season, other than Anthony Bridgerton and his wife, Kate, still ^^^ getting it on together.

Plot

Yes, there will still be too many lookalike Bridgerton dudes to tell apart from each other. Here’s Anthony once more with Edmond, and even though these two don’t look like twins (like the rest of them), those genes are strong.

Bridgerton Season 3
Netflix

The main focus of this season will be Colin Bridgerton’s push-and-pull courtship of Penelope Featherington.

Bridgerton Season 3
Netflix

Of course, Penelope also sits in grave danger of being outed as gossip queen Lady Whistledown, and Eloise Bridgerton (who knows about this ruse) will surely give her grief over this duplicity.

Bridgerton Season 3
Netflix

Expect Penelope, however, to grow wary of waiting for Colin to decide that he loves her, so she will take her chances elsewhere in the dating pool. We can predict that Colin will then realize what he’s missing after relegating Penelope to “friends only” status so that he can perhaps attempt to “rake across the continent” like the Duke once did. The show has revealed that Colin will have gained some “swagger,” and for some reason, he’ll also determine to help Penelope in her courtship quest. Good luck with that via the synopsis:

[W]hen his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly. Complicating matters for Penelope is her rift with Eloise (Claudia Jessie), who has found a new friend in a very unlikely place, while Penelope’s growing presence in the [town] makes it all the more difficult to keep her Lady Whistledown alter ego a secret.

Cast

Tons of Bridgertons and Featheringtons will take center stage this season.

Granted, the former is always front and center, but Ms. Penelope Featherington will move from background gossip and maneuverer to the central courtship story. She will, of course, be portrayed by Nicola Coughlan with Luke Newton returning as Colin Bridgerton. As well, Simone Ashley (Kate Sharma) and Jonathan Bailey (Anthony Bridgerton) will continue to work their onscreen chemistry.

Also returning will be Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown along with Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton), Harriet Cains (Philipa Featherington), Bessie Carter (Prudence Featherington), Will Tilston (Gregory Bridgerton), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Ruth Gemmell (Violet Bridgerton), Hannah Dodd (Francesca Bridgerton), Polly Walker (Portia Featherington), and so many more.

New characters will be portrayed by Daniel Francis (Marcus Anderson), James Phoon (Harry Dankworth), and Sam Phillips (Lord Debling).

Release Date

Netflix has been edging into the split-season format, which might not be the ideal format for bingewatchers, but it seems to be working out for Netflix since they are favoring this approach more often lately. As such, viewers can expect the first four episodes of this season to arrive on May 16. The second chunk of four will follow on June 13. Then, it’s probably onto planning for the next Bridgerton dude’s clumsy courtship since Season 4 is already greenlit.

Trailer

No trailer has materialized yet, but Netflix damn well knows what they are doing with this teaser.

Bridgerton will get hot and bothered again in May 2024.

Why Are T.I. And Tiny Harris Being Sued?

t.i.
Getty Image

A woman who claims that rapper T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris drugged and raped her in 2005 has filed a new lawsuit against the couple after at least one previous case was dismissed. In 2021, the couple was accused of sexual assault by a lawyer representing 11 people who claimed to have been victimized by the couple or their entourage; criminal investigations were urged but not pursued, as the statute of limitations had passed since the alleged incidents took place.

However, under California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover Up Accountability Act, a one-year “look-back” window to file lawsuits a one-year “look-back” window to file lawsuits in cases of alleged sexual abuse with expired statues of limitations was instituted, and although it expired this year, some cases were allowed to be filed on Tuesday (January 2) due to the holiday. According to Rolling Stone, this Jane Doe plaintiff, an Air Force veteran who says she was around 22 or 23 at the time of the alleged incident, filed the 15-page lawsuit late Tuesday.

T.I. and Tiny have vehemently denied the allegations for the past three years, with T.I. even addressing the suits on the 2021 track “What It’s Come To.” In a statement, they continued to deny the accusations, writing, “This plaintiff has been threatening to file this lawsuit for THREE years. For THREE years, we have emphatically and categorically denied these allegations. For THREE years we have maintained our innocence and refused to pay these extortionate demands for things we didn’t do. For THREE years, we’ve maintained the same position while the claims in this story have changed time and time again. Our position is clear. We are innocent of these fake claims, we will not be shaken down, and we look forward to our day in court.”

Noted Curser Of Texas Sports Teams Ted Cruz Is Sick Of People Blaming Him For Texas Sports Teams’ Spectacular Failures (Due To The ‘Ted Cruz Curse’)

Ted Cruz
Getty Image

Ted Cruz showed up to Monday’s big Sugar Bowl game sporting the burnt orange collars of the Texas Longhorns. They lost. The Washington Huskies beat the Longhorns 37-31, and Cruz was promptly blamed for the outcome.

The Texas senator has a history of showing up to sporting events wearing a team’s color, only for said team to lose. There’s already a name for it, the “Ted Cruz curse.” Naturally, the thin-skinned politician did not appreciate the curse going viral, again, and he lashed out at the media.

Via Ted Cruz on Twitter:

To all the dishonest press hacks blaming me for the Longhorn’s heartbreaking loss, ok—if you give me the WINS I’ve cheered on too!

-Astros World Series 17 & 22
-SEVEN consecutive Astros ALCS
-UT 06 Rose Bowl victory over USC
-A&M beating Alabama in 21
-Rockets 94 Finals win

Of course, it doesn’t help his case that isn’t the first time the senator has had to deny the existence of a Ted Cruz curse in recent months.

Back in October 2023, Cruz flew off the handle after social media blamed him for the Houston Astros losing home games that Cruz attended. Fans even went so far as to beg him to stay home during a major game that could put the Astros in the World Series. Cruz still went, and you’ll never believe what happened.

The Astros lost.

Great American Barleywines To Drink This Winter, Ranked

Pure Project/3 Floyds/Sierra Nevada/ Real Ale/istock/Uproxx
Pure Project/3 Floyds/Sierra Nevada/ Real Ale/istock/Uproxx

If you didn’t know it already, a barleywine isn’t a wine at all. Instead of being a grape-fermented drink, barleywine is a strong ale that is made from barley. They’re usually fairly high in alcohol (between 6%-12%) and loaded with malty sweetness, dried fruit flavors, caramel, and gentle spices. Not only are they great warming beers for the winter months, but they also cellar well for year-round sipping.

There are two mainstream types of barleywines these days — English and American. The English style is maltier and sweeter and is the originator of the style. It was called “barley wine” in that the alcohol content was often as high as wine but made with grains, so a beer. The American style (like with many of our craft beers) is known for its higher hop content for the most part. The latter is the style of barleywine we’re focusing on below.

It’s time to find some to drink. Keep scrolling to see eight of our favorite American barleywines ranked on overall seasonal aroma and flavor.

Read The Top Beer Posts From The Last Six Months:

8) Tampa Bay Moose Killer

Tampa Bay Moose Killer
Tampa Bay

ABV: 10%

Average Price: $13 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans

The Beer:

You’re not likely to find any moose in Tampa Bay (or anywhere near there unless it’s at a zoo), but you can find a barleywine called Moose Killer. First brewed back in 1995, this winter classic is known for its mix of sweet malts and bold bright hops.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose, you’ll find a ton of vanilla, toffee, dried fruits, and candied orange peel. The palate is centered around raisins, caramel candy, freshly baked bread, light spices, and a ton of floral piney hops. The finish is a nice mix of boozy sweetness and gentle bitterness.

Bottom Line:

This is a great barleywine for drinkers who prefer a little extra oomph when it comes to hops in their dark beers.

7) Sierra Nevada Bigfoot

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot
Sierra Nevada

ABV: 9.6%

Average Price: $15 for a six-pack

The Beer:

There are few American-made barleywines more well-known than Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. Available January through April, this iconic beer is brewed with Caramelized and Two-Row pale malt as well as ale yeast. It gets its classic hop presence from the addition of Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is all raisins, dried cherries, candied orange peels, caramel, and pine needles. Sipping it reveals a complex palate of bready malts, sticky toffee pudding, orange peels, raisins, light spices, and piney, floral hops. The finish is lightly bitter, warming, and pleasantly boozy.

Bottom Line:

There’s a reason Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is so beloved, it’s a masterful barleywine and one you can get (almost) everywhere.

6) Real Ale Sisyphus

Real Ale Sisyphus
Real Ale

ABV: 10.5%

Average Price: $7 for a 22-ounce bottle

The Beer:

In Greek mythology, Sisyphus is doomed to push a rock up a hill only to have it fall back down for eternity. The beer made in his honor is quite a bit less tiresome. It gets its name thanks to how much work was put into its creation.

Tasting Notes:

Aromas of sweet caramel, candied orange peels, dried fruits, and light spices fill your nostrils before your first sip. The palate is filled with notes of toffee, licorice, orange peels, plum, vanilla, and gentle floral, piney hops. The finish is boozy, warming, and memorable.

Bottom Line:

This is a great take on the American barleywine style. It has a nice balance of sweetness and bitterness.

5) AleSmith Old Numbskull

AleSmith Old Numbskull
AleSmith

ABV: 11%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

San Diego’s Alesmith is well-known for its IPA prowess. It should come as no surprise that it brewed a “West Coast Style” barleywine. While it carries the usual sweet caramel malt profile, this memorable brew is tempered by the addition of plenty of hop aroma and flavor.

Tasting Notes:

There’s a ton of bready malts, caramel, dried fruits, and a burst of pine needles on the nose. The interesting flavors continue on the palate where orchard fruits, caramel, vanilla, raisins, and pine take center stage.

Bottom Line:

While American barleywines are known for their hop presence, this is one for the true hop heads. If you enjoy IPAs and want to try a barleywine, make it this one.

4) Pure Project Forgotten Brilliance

Pure Project Forgotten Brilliance
Pure Project

ABV: 12.3%

Average Price: $15 for a 500ml bottle

The Beer:

This popular beer was crafted to bridge the gap between classic English-style barleywines and hoppy American barleywines. It’s brewed with Maris Otter and English Crystal malts as well as Cascade and Stra hops.

Tasting Notes:

A lot is going on with this beer’s nose. There are aromas of candied orange peel, light herbal notes, almonds, caramel, dried fruits, and light pine. The palate continues this trend. There are flavors of almond cookies, orange zest, pepper, toffee candy, fresh bread, and dank pine. The finish is boozy, warming, and pleasantly bitter.

Bottom Line:

If you’re a fan of English-style barleywines and you want to give the American version a try, this is a great gateway beer.

3) 3 Floyds Pillar of the Beasts

3 Floyds Pillar of the Beasts
3 Floyds

ABV: 13.7%

Average Price: $16 for a four-pack

The Beer:

This isn’t your average barleywine. But 3 Floyds doesn’t do anything “average”. Pillar of the Beasts is a barrel-aged barleywine with a twist. It’s aged in ex-bourbon barrels for more than a year and flavored with in-house-made salted caramel.

Tasting Notes:

Breathing in the nose, you’ll be treated to aromas of sweet bourbon, oaky wood, vanilla beans, toffee, raisins, and lightly piney hops. Drinking it reveals notes of raisins, dried cherries, salted caramel, molasses, biscuit malts, oak, and floral, piney hops, The finish is lightly hoppy and ends with boozy warming whiskey.

Bottom Line:

This is one for the whiskey fans. It has everything American barleywine fans love, but it’s turned up to 11 by aging in bourbon barrels.

2) East End Gratitude

East End Gratitude
East End

ABV: 11.5%

Average Price: Limited Availability

The Beer:

This limited-edition barleywine from the folks at Pittsburgh’s East End Brewing Company is released each year to celebrate the brewery’s anniversary. It’s bottle-conditioned, making the beer in the can or bottle slightly different each year.

Tasting Notes:

Orange peels, toffee, raisins, caramel, vanilla, figs, and herbal, earthy hops abound on the nose. The palate is a symphony of butterscotch, raisins, candied orange peel, wintry spices, figs, and light piney hops. The finish is a nice combination of hop bitterness and malt sweetness.

Bottom Line:

As balanced flavors go, it’s difficult to beat the appeal of East End Gratitude. Everything is where it should be. We can see why this is an annual treat for brewery fans.

1) Fair State Zoomie Catcher

Fair State Zoomie Catcher
Fair State

ABV: 10.2%

Average Price: $15 for a four-pack

The Beer:

When Fair State set out to make this beer, they wanted to pay tribute to the popular Pacific Northwest-made American barleywines by crafting a balanced beer that had all the sweet caramel malt flavor from its English cousins and the piney floral hops from the American version. They did just that.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is a decadent mix of vanilla, caramel candy, dried fruits, and floral hops. The palate continues this with a flavor profile of Werther’s original, brown sugar, gentle baking spices, raisins, dried cherries, vanilla beans, and a nice kick of floral, herbal hops at the very finish.

Bottom Line:

This is a sublimely balanced beer. You’ll have a hard time finding a better interpretation of the American barleywine style than Fair State’s Zoomie Catcher.

Maine’s Can’t-Miss Breweries To Visit This Winter

Maine Breweries
Allagash/Oxbow/Maine Beer/iStockphoto/Uproxx

Maine is much more than “vacationland” and the home of Stephen King, it’s also a beer-lover’s paradise. According to the Maine Brewer’s Guild, the state is currently home to more than 165 breweries and brew pubs. This means it’s a great place to take an early winter road trip to sip IPAs, lagers, stouts, pilsners, and all kinds of innovative, exciting beers.

Portland, Maine on its own rivals Portland, Oregon, in terms of great breweries per capita. If you simply visited that coastal city alone, you’d get to enjoy the likes of Allagash, Shipyard, Bissell Brothers, and more. But if you spend some time traveling around the state, you’ll do more than visit some of the cities mentioned in classic horror novels, you’ll enjoy award-winning beers from breweries like Baxter Brewing, Tributary Brewing, and the iconic Maine Beer Company.

The best part? If you live in the northeast (or you don’t mind a flight or two), Maine is easy to get to and even more fun to drink your way through. Keep scrolling to learn a little more about eight of our favorites.

Read The Top Beer Posts From The Last Six Months:

Baxter Brewing Company – Lewiston

Baxter Brewing Company
Baxter Brewing Company

Baxter Brewing Company opened in 2011 to craft well-made Maine-made IPAs while still paying tribute to the West Coast IPAs (and their hop varieties). They’ve branched out to other styles since then, but the IPA is still the top dog. Visit The Pub at Baxter — located at the historic Lewiston Bates Mill right next to the brewery — for a large tap list of rotating beers and great food like poutine, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and banh mi.

What To Drink:

While Baxter makes many noteworthy beers, it would behoove you to try its flagship Stowaway IPA. Brewed with almost 500 pounds of hops, it’s known for its balanced flavor profile featuring a ton of piney, floral hops as well as a healthy malt backbone.

Lone Pine Brewing Company – Portland

Lone Pine Brewing Company
Lone Pine Brewing Company

This Portland-area brewery first opened its doors in 2016. In the years since it’s gained a major following in the New England (and beyond) beer community and is now one of the largest craft breweries in Maine. Like many breweries, it started when high school friends Tom Madden and John Paul began home brewing and eventually decided to open a brewery. While there are various offshoots, the main facility is in Portland. This is where you’ll find their small batch pilot system, an outdoor beer garden, and 24 taps featuring a rotation of IPAs, stout, lagers, and other beers.

What To Drink:

While you can’t go wrong with any of the beers from this renowned brewery, if you want to get the most out of your experience, you’ll try Oh-J. This New England-style double IPA is known for its juicy hazy body and massive kick of citrus and pine.

Bissell Brothers – Portland

Bissell Brothers
Bissell Brothers

Bissell Brothers is a big name in the Maine beer world. Known for their innovative and envelope-pushing brews, Bissell Brothers Portland taproom is a great place to grab a bottle, cans, a growler, or relax with a pint from one of the 20 taps.

What To Drink:

Bissell Brothers is well-known for its Swish, a hazy juicy New England-style IPA. But after you try that one, we suggest grabbing a pint of its Lux Pale Rye Ale. This Mosaic pale ale is known for its tropical fruit flavor and gentle rye spice.

Maine Beer Company – Freeport

Maine Beer Company
Maine Beer Company

If you did a poll to find the most well-known Maine-based breweries, it would likely be a toss-up between Allagash and Maine Beer Company. The latter — located in Freeport — has been brewing award-winning beer since 2013. As with many breweries, its story begins with two brothers who had a passion for brewing and decided to open a brewery. Take a trip to the sprawling tasting room to try some of its more iconic brews like Dinner IPA and Peeper (its first-ever beer) and enjoy a mouth-watering pizza.

What To Drink:

No trip to Maine Beer Company is complete without trying its most famous beer: Lunch. This New England-style IPA is named for a well-known Finback whale. This balanced IPA is known for its mix of sweet caramel malts as well as candied orange peels, grapefruit, and floral piney hops.

Tributary Brewing – Kittery

Tributary Brewing
Tributary Brewing

Tributary Brewing, which opened in 2014, got its name from the tributaries, saltwater marshes, and tidal rivers scattered throughout Southern Maine. The brewery was founded by husband-and-wife duo Tod and Galen Mott. Tod is best known for creating the recipe for the wildly popular Harpoon IPA — one of the most successful craft beers of the last generation. Visit the Kittery tasting room for a flight or a few pints of its rotating list of seasonal and year-round beers.

What To Drink:

If you’re going to be in Maine, you might as well enjoy something from the ocean, right? Tributary’s Oyster Stout is a can’t-miss beer with its flaked and malted oats as well as Heron Island Oysters added to the boil. It’s loaded with roasted malt, chocolate, and a lightly briny flavor.

Allagash Brewing Company – Portland

Allagash Brewing Company
Allagash Brewing Company

There aren’t many Maine breweries more well-known than Allagash Brewing Company. This Portland staple was opened in 1995, at the height of the first real national “craft” beer boom. It’s well-known for its award-winning Belgian-inspired beers. Visit its flagship tasting room for a rotating list of taps as well as lobster rolls, beer brats, burgers, grilled cheese, and even whoopie pies featuring Allagash North Sky Stout cakes with Irish cream filling.

What To Drink:

You’re going to want to enjoy a fresh pint of its iconic Allagash White. We’d also suggest a pint of Allagash Tripel. This 9% ABV golden ale, made to taste like traditional Belgian abbey ales, is known for its mix of dried fruits, honey, and a crisp, dry finish.

Oxbow Brewing Company – Newcastle

Oxbow Brewing Company
Oxbow Brewing Company

Opened in 2011, Oxbow Brewing Company is a small farmhouse brewery situated in Newcastle. While many of the big names can be found in urban Portland, Oxbow opted for a more rural vibe. That hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the most popular breweries in the state. While it has several offshoot sites, visit the original location and take a walk around the farm before stopping into the taproom or beer garden while enjoying rotating drafts and seasonal brews as well as Belgian-style frites (fried in duck fat!).

What To Drink:

If you’re going to visit a rural farmhouse brewery like Oxbow, you need to sip a farmhouse ale, right? Well, Oxbow’s Farmhouse Pale Ale is worth the trip alone. This hoppy, fruity, and crisp farmhouse ale is like a mix of a Saison and a pale ale in all the best ways.

Fogtown Brewing Company – Ellsworth

Fogtown Brewing Company
Fogtown Brewing Company

If you’re already planning to go to Maine to visit the popular Acadia National Park, you’d be remiss if you didn’t stop at the nearby Fogtown Brewing Company in Ellsworth. Opened in 2017, the brewery is known for its high-quality beers, a mission of sustainability, and mouth-watering farm-to-table menu. Visit the tap room and bar garden to imbibe a rotating list of brews while enjoying wood-fired pizza and other fare.

What To Drink:

Fogtown Night Nurse is an award-winning 7.1% ABV American stout that definitely should be on your “must-try” list if you find yourself at Fogtown. Brewed with organic oats and dark chocolate malts, it’s known for its palate of roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee, as well as its creamy mouthfeel.

Repeat Pretend-Italian Adam Driver Sounded Off On The ‘What Is It With Italy?’ Subject: ‘Who Gives A Sh*t?’

House of Gucci Lady Gaga Adam Driver
Universal

Adam Driver has had many fantastic roles in his career: boyfriend to Lena Dunham, husband to Lady Gaga, and ex-husband to Scarlett Johansson. But when he’s not playing a sulking boyfriend or space son, he’s playing Italians, and he thinks it’s weird that everyone has been asking him about it.

“So many people have been like, ‘How many Italians… ?’ I’m like, it’s just kind of worked out that way,” Driver recently said on the SmartLess podcast. Driver is currently starring as Enzo Ferrari in the sports biopic Ferrari.

Even though he knows people are talking about it, Driver doesn’t think it’s weird. “But I’m like, you know, it’s Ridley [Scott] and it’s Michael [Mann] and they’re in my mind some of the best filmmakers. Who gives a s**t that it was two Italians back to back?” This is also what people were saying about The Super Mario Bros. Movie last year.

Driver isn’t mad about being typecast as an Italian, but he doesn’t know why people keep bringing it up. “I’m surprised how much it comes up. It’s like, ‘You have a thing,’ and I’m like, ‘It’s two! It’s two Italians!’ It’s just two. The press isn’t a place where you have a nuanced conversation,” he added. Does Driver even know that there is an intensive internet campaign to get an Italian-American in Star Wars? Probably not! Because there isn’t one…..yet.

But Driver says that it’s about the plot and not about the Italy of it all. He continued, “That seems like a hard idea. Like, ‘What is it with Italy?’ I mean, it’s less to do with Italy, although I like it. It’s more about Ridley Scott and Michael Mann and the projects themselves. Italy is not the first thing on my mind,” he added.

It sure should be on your mind, Adam!!!! Without Italy, we would never have Martin Scorsese or his TikToks. Think about that!

Where To Watch The 2024 Golden Globe Nominees For Best Picture

Barbenheimer Diaries
Merle Cooper

The Golden Globes are back, just in time to kick off one of the most chaotic and bizarre awards seasons we’ve seen in a while. From reschedule-Emmys to shows with no host, nothing’s really certain this year (except that Oppenheimer and Barbie will likely be battling for all the big categories). Still, there are some terrific movies nominated in both the Best Picture – Drama and Best Picture – Comedy races so, if you’re filling out your ballot, here’s where you can watch them before the show airs on Jan. 7th.

Oppenheimer
Universal

Oppenheimer (Rent/Buy)

Christopher Nolan’s riveting historical biopic scored a handful of nominations at this year’s awards ceremony with critics praising its cast, direction, and masterful score. Currently, the only way to watch Cillian Murphy stare despondently as he invents a weapon that will help humanity destroy itself is via your wallet. The film is available on demand, or you can copy Nolan’s preferred viewing method and buy it on Blu-Ray.

Here’s our review:

In the end, JFK was about Jim Garrison’s quest to uncover the truth, if there actually was a hidden truth or not. Oppenheimer shares that DNA (and style and structure) with Nolan’s fixation on the truth about J. Robert Oppenheimer. As Emily Blunt’s Kitty Oppenheimer tells her husband, “Will anyone, ever, tell the truth about this?” Christopher Nolan has obviously accepted this question as his charge.

Killers of the Flower Moon
Apple TV+

Killers of the Flower Moon (In Theaters/On Demand)

Martin Scorcese’s lengthy epic chronicling the tragic true story of the Osage people will soon find its streaming home on Apple TV+ — for now, you can see it in theaters or buy it on demand. That means, before Lily Gladstone, Leonardo DiCaprio, and/or Robert de Niro take home trophies for their performances, you’ll be able to watch as they steal, murder, and get revenge on one another in 4K.

MAESTRO
NETFLIX

Maestro (Netflix)

It took Bradley Cooper six years to learn how to conduct an orchestra so that he could make this biopic about legendary composer Leonard Bernstein but, thanks to Netflix, you don’t have to wait nearly as long to stream it. The film is already queued up on the platform so dissect Cooper’s podium technique (and his prosthetic nose) all you want.

past lives movie
a24

Past Lives (Rent/Buy)

Celine Song’s bittersweet love story broke our hearts when it landed in theaters last year. The film follows Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), two sweethearts separated in childhood who reunite years later. As of now, the only way to cry hysterically while watching Lee give a masterclass in acting is to rent or buy it via Apple or Amazon Prime.

zone of interest
a24

The Zone of Interest (In Theaters)

Jonathan Glazer directs this eerie nightmare about Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his quest to build the ideal family life next to the most notorious concentration camp in Germany during the war. Unsettling and thought-provoking, the film has already earned Oscar buzz, but the Golden Globes are its first stop on the awards season circuit. Catch it in theaters now, and likely on Max when that window ends.

Anatomy of a Fall
Le pacte

Anatomy of a Fall (Rent/Buy)

This French courtroom drama stunned critics when it won the Palme d’Or and the Palm Dog Award (yes, this is a real thing) at the 76th Cannes Film Festival last year. In it, Sandra Hüller plays a novelist accused of killing her husband. Whether she did or not is less interesting than how director Justine Triet presents the case. The best way to stream this thriller is via on-demand.

barbie
warner bros.

Barbie (Max)

The summer blockbuster that launched a worldwide shortage of the color pink is finally streaming on Max so get ready to have the most iconic lines from this soon-to-be Greta Gerwig classic etched into your brain. “Do you guys ever think about dying?” Only when we imagine a world in which this movie doesn’t rack up all of hardware come awards night.

Here’s our review:

I truly wonder if Mattel signed up for “shrewd, biting, and hilarious cultural commentary about their product.” Or, if they even realized, of course, that’s what they were going to get with Gerwig and Baumbach involved. To the point, throughout the film’s running time, I just kept thinking to myself I can’t believe this exists and I can’t believe they got away with it.

Poor Things Emma Stone
Searchlight Pictures

Poor Things (In Theaters)

This delightfully quirky, strangely feminist coming-of-consciousness story from Greek Weird Wave ambassador Yorgos Lanthimos is still playing in theaters. But then again, wouldn’t you want to watch Emma Stone frolick and f*ck her autonomy on the big screen? It’s her performance, plus that of Mark Ruffalo as an enamored sleazy lawyer that could upend the Golden Globes this year.

Here’s our review:

Emma Stone gives the performance of a lifetime in this. The best word I can give here is “fearless.” She does a lot of things in this movie that a lot of actors would never do.

American Fiction
Amazon MGM

American Fiction (In Theaters)

This comedy, based on a novel by Percival Everett finally gives actor Jeffrey Wright the kind of leading man material he deserves. As Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a novelist fed up with stories filled with outlandish Black stereotypes who decides to write one of his own out of spite, Wright is sympathetic, funny, and insightful in equal measure. You’ll likely be able to watch this one on Amazon Prime before the Oscars but for now, it’s only in theaters.

The Holdovers
Focus Features

The Holdovers (Peacock)

Paul Giamatti plays a grumpy professor tasked with babysitting a group of troublesome students with nowhere to go over the Christmas break in this heartwarming comedy teeming with nostalgia and some terrific performances from Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Catch it on Peacock before it competes for some major awards this season.

Here’s our review:

The other night I had dinner with a friend who saw The Holdovers and it quickly became one of their favorite movies of the year. What’s interesting is he said he was shocked by how good it is, even though he went in expecting it to be good.

May December (Netflix)

Whether Todd Haynes’ loose interpretation of the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal is a comedy or not is still up for debate. There are certainly some hilarious moments in the film, most notably Julianne Moore’s obsession with hot dogs. But what’s undeniable is how good everyone is in this, from Natalie Portman who plays an actress preparing for a career-defining role to Moore’s sexual predator in denial, to Charle Melton’s heartbreaking portrayal of the boy she took advantage of. Check it out on Netflix now.

Air (Amazon Prime Video)

Remember Air? The movie about Michael Jordan that’s not really about Michael Jordan but instead, about the Nike sneakers Michael Jordan made popular and the white guys who pitched those sneakers to Michael Jordan before Michael Jordan was the Michael Jordan? Yeah, we’re surprised it’s here too. But it’s available to watch on Amazon Prime Video in case you want to catch Ben Affleck wearing the worst wig in cinematic history.
