There’s a soulful new voice in the Billboard Hot 100 top ten. Teddy Swims might be the newest hitmaker to stake his claim at the top of the charts, but he’s no newcomer. The Warner-signed soul star has been grinding it out for some time as a singer and songwriter, and the recent success of his song “Lose Control,” which reached No. 8 this week, is a testament to both his talent and his nonstop work ethic. So, who is Teddy Swims?

Starting out life in Conyers, Georgia, as Jaten Collin Dimsdale, Teddy first gained popularity as a covers singer on YouTube in the late 2010 (this is how I discovered him), performing songs from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Chris Stapleton, H.E.R. and Michael Jackson and catching a massive wave of support thanks to his distinctive look and incongruously soulful sound (think Post Malone singing Lenny Williams or Jelly Roll doing Teddy Pendergrass). He independently released the single “Night Off” in July 2019, leading to a deal with Warner Records.

Since then, he’s released four EPs — the latest, Sleep Is Exhausting, in 2022 — and dropped his debut album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) last September. He’s also given a slew of well-received television performances on shows like The Kelly Clarkson Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and America’s Got Talent (basically, every talk or music-related show on the air except for SNL, which you kinda have to believe is coming soon).

In January 2022, he also performed on Uproxx’s own The Eye, belting his singles “911” and “Please Turn Green” for the Warner showcase series. Check out his new top-ten hit, “Lose Control,” below.

House fires are devastating for families. In a matter of minutes, you could lose all of your belongings and a place to live, or worse, you could lose loved ones. A family in Phoenix, Arizona, recently found themselves facing the reality of their own home in flames. Claudia Jimenez told CBS News that she woke up trapped in her burning apartment with her two daughters, with nothing to do but yell for help in the hopes that someone would hear her.

The mom’s screams were answered by Joe Hollins, a homeless man who was camping nearby with his wife. Hollins didn’t hesitate to try to find a way to help. With no way out and the fire department still nowhere on the scene, Jimenez had to trust the stranger who was standing below.

“He was right underneath and he was like ‘Yes, throw your daughters out, I’m going to catch them, I’m going to get them,'” Jimenez told CBS.

So the terrified mom did what any mom would’ve done to save her babies—she tossed them one at a time out the window. And just as he’d promised, Hollins caught them. Valerie, who is just a year old, was dropped to safety first, then 8-year-old Natalie made the two-story fall into Hollins’ arms. The family dogs were next out the window before it was time for Jimenez to make the jump.

After some coaxing, the mom made the leap, and Hollins again made the catch, saving everyone in the house. When everything was said and done, Hollins saved the entire family and the dogs. Soon after Jimenez jumped to safety, the fire department showed up to put out the blaze.

Multiple families lost their home that night, but thanks to Hollins, the Jimenez family didn’t lose their lives. In an effort to help Hollins after saving this family, a GiveSendGo was created and people can donate here. A GoFundMe was also created for the young mom and her daughters, and people who would like to help can do so by donating here.

If you ask the hero, he’s no hero at all. He told CBS News that anyone in his shoes would’ve done the same thing. Hollins was in the right place at the right time, and because of his willingness to help, he saved an entire family. You can watch the entire interview below.

It’s quite common for people to fantasize about their wedding day—the ceremony, the bridal party, the dress, the cake—and some people spend months or even years meticulously planning every detail. That’s what happened to one couple who eagerly watched as the caterers who were carrying their wedding cake tripped on their way into the room, sending their cake to an untimely demise in spectacular fashion.

The video, shared by @the.sarik on Instagram, is only about 10 seconds long, but it tells a whole beautiful love story in the reactions of both the groom and the bride.

First of all, hope those waiters are OK. But secondly, staying calm and making the most of a bad situation is a huge character plus, and this groom clearly has those qualities in spades. You can see in the bride’s face that she knows it, too.

“Her eyes show that she knows she got the right guy,” wrote one commenter.

“The way he just called her to eat is just phenomenal,” shared another.

“‘Cake is still cake.’ Yelling at those waiters won’t solve anything, but it can ruin their whole lives,” wrote another. “They know their mistake, and they can be corrected privately. May the reaction of this man be an inspiration to us all, to care for the feelings of other people more than material things.”

“Of all the things that could ruin a wedding day, I’m glad the husband knew this didn’t have to be one of them,” shared another.

When unpredictable things do happen, it’s largely the reaction of the people involved that determines whether they become tragic tales or entertaining stories. If what we saw in the video is any indicator, this couple will be telling their grandkids someday about how the guys carrying their wedding cake tripped and ruined it, and how Grandpa’s response won Grandma’s heart all over again.

Writer/director Alex Garland turned heads in December when A24 dropped the trailer for his new movie Civil War. Given the divisive state of American politics where calls for an actual civil war have become increasingly common, Garland appears to have boldly imagined what such a conflict would like and what it would do the populace at large. The film seemingly centers around a president who refuses to relinquish power, and well, let’s not pretend we don’t know who that sounds like.

Here’s everything we know about the potentially incendiary Civil War:

Plot

The plot details for Civil War are being kept tightly under wraps. Even the official synopsis for the film is extremely vague:

A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.

Not a whole lot to go on, right? Fortunately, A24 released a trailer that offers some clues as to what sparked the nationwide conflict. Most notably, Nick Offerman’s President of the United States is somehow on a third term, which suggests some sort of authoritarian power play that was alarming enough for Texas and California to join forces. It’s a concept that sparked a whole lot of laughs on social media given the states are polar opposites on the political spectrum. (Texas is notoriously conservative while California is overwhelmingly liberal.)

Of course, there could be other factors at play, but Garland is keeping things close to the chest. That said, it’s not like America hasn’t already witnessed a president make a violent power grab (January 6, anyone?), so it’ll be interesting to see whether Civil War gets awkwardly topical or goes in a completely different direction. Is Offerman a proxy for Trump, or something else entirely?

Cast

Civil War stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Jesse Plemons and Nick Offerman. While their roles haven’t been confirmed — not even their character names are available — the first trailer revealed that Dunst plays a seasoned photojournalist with warzone experience, Plemons is a soldier, and Offerman plays the President of the United States whose third term appears to be at the crux of the film’s conflict. Moura and Spaeny’s roles are unspecified, but they seem to be random citizens just trying to survive the war breaking out on American soil.

Civil War starts playing in theaters on April 26, 2024.

2023 was the year of comeback tours. From 5o Cent and Taylor Swift to Beyoncé, music’s biggest names drew in huge crowds during their tours. Another superstar that pulled in massive audiences on the road was “Nasty” singer Janet Jackson through her Together Again Tour, the highest-grossing tour of her career.

Those who could not secure tickets for last year’s tour stop are in luck. On January 16, Jackson announced her decision to extend her run. Beginning in March, Jackson’s performance stint will resume thanks to the 2024 Together Again Tour. On several of the select 43-date schedule, “Hot In Herre” rapper Nelly will serve as a special guest.

It would seem a little sad if Tina Fey was able to pull off a Mean Girls “reboot” without having at least one of the integral players involved, which is why Linsday Lohan’s brief cameo in the movie musical was a nice callback to the original. And while, in theory, it would be nice to assume Lohan would do it out of the kindness of her heart, it turns out she made bank off of appearing in the new movie. And none for Gretchen Wieners, it seems.

According to Variety, Lohan’s half-day of work on the reboot earned her $500,000. Lohan appeared in the film as the judge of the Mathletes competition at the film’s conclusion. She wasn’t the only cameo — Megan Thee Stallion also popped up in a TikTok-style montage, while Emily In Paris’ Ashley Park (who debuted in Mean Girls on Broadway) also had a small role as the French teacher. Get it?! Très Fech!

Even though Lohan has a major payday for her role, the actress was reportedly “disappointed” by one of the movie’s jokes: At one point in the film, Megan Thee Stallion says that “Y2K fire crotch is back,” which could possibly be seen as a dig at Lohan. A source told The Messenger that Lohan was “surprised and taken aback” at the comment when she appeared at the New York premiere of the film.

While the joke was just a quick one-liner, it seemed to be a nod to a 2006 paparazzi video in which actor Brandon Davis, who was tight with Lohan’s ex-friend Paris Hilton, referred to Lohan as a “fire crotch,” among other insults.

Fey, who penned both the 2004 film and the new film, had been open about retiring past jokes that haven’t aged well in the 20 years since the original film premiered. “I was writing in the early 2000s very much based on my experience as a teen in the late ’80s. It’s come to no one’s surprise that jokes have changed,” she told The New York Times. “You don’t poke in the way that you used to poke. Even if your intention was always the same, it’s just not how you do it anymore, which is fine. I very much believe that you can find new ways to do jokes with less accidental shrapnel sideways.” Perhaps we’ll have to see how the “fire crotch” joke lands in 2044.
