All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Best New Indie
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Waxahatchee, Faye Webster, MGMT, and more.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

Infant Island – Obsidian Wreath

Infant Island is the musical equivalent of two glasses of cold brew injected straight into your veins. The Fredericksburg, Virginia, group are one of screamo’s most exciting bands right now, and, while their knack for an adrenaline rush remains as effective as ever, Obsidian Wreath is their most dynamic work yet. Infant Island’s fourth album and first for Jeremy Bolm’s label, Secret Voice, shifts on a dime from the quiet, Greet Death-featuring “Kindling” to the brutal blast beats of opener “Another Cycle.” It’s only January, but Obsidian Wreath will certainly be a contender for one of the best heavy records of 2024.

Naliah Hunter – Lovegaze

Harpist and composer Naliah Hunter excels at building alluring atmospheres. Take a song like “000,” whose electronic drums trail off in a reverb-soaked haze while Hunter’s voice glides in and out of frame, or the centerpiece “Lovegaze,” in which her diaphanous harp arpeggios give way to a hypnotic, halftime groove. Lovegaze, Hunter’s debut album, abounds with moments like these, ones that leave a tangible impact despite their gentle constructions. Across 10 tracks, Lovegaze engulfs you in its mesmerizing world from start to finish.

Waxahatchee – “Right Back To It”

You wouldn’t think a songwriter as talented as Katie Crutchfield would wait so long to write her first love song, but she did. “Right Back To It,” the lead single from her forthcoming album, Tigers Blood, exudes the warmth and intimacy that her music as Waxahatchee always has, whether it’s the grittiness of 2013’s Cerulean Salt or the twang of 2020’s Saint Cloud. In-demand guitarist MJ Lenderman backs Crutchfield with his soothing timbre, conjuring the timelessly classic country duet, and Phil Cook provides a plucky, banjo-led backdrop. It’s a gorgeous introduction to a new era of Waxahatchee, one where the love songs ring as heartfelt and winsome as they ever could.

Jamie xx – “It’s So Good”

It has nearly been a decade since Jamie xx dropped his sole solo album, the electronic masterpiece In Colour. In the meantime, he has released occasional singles, like “Let’s Do It Again,” “Kill Dem,” and “Idontknow,” with no hints at another full-length. Fortunately, they’ve all been utterly incredible, as is the case with his latest offering, “It’s So Good.” Released in conjunction with the new Chanel Coco Crush campaign, “It’s So Good” pushes and pulls with its four-on-the-floor house beat and squeaky, metallic synths. Jamie xx knew what he was doing when he named this track; it really is so good.

The Smile – “Friend Of A Friend”

We are just over a week away from Wall Of Eyes, the sophomore album from The Smile. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood seem perfectly content putting Radiohead on hold for the time being and dedicating their creative focus to this project instead. Alongside former Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, the trio have shared the latest preview of their upcoming record, “Friend Of A Friend.” Its swaying, jazzy pulse evokes the uneasiness of “Pyramid Song” but without the proggy feel. Simply put, it’s wonderful to hear Yorke and Greenwood making music without the burden of a New Radiohead tag.

Rosali – “Rewind”

North Carolina has slowly become one of indie rock’s most prominent hotbeds, home to artists like Wednesday, Indigo De Souza, and Helado Negro, to name a few. Add Rosali to that burgeoning list, a recent Merge Records signee who’s on the cusp of releasing her new album, Bite Down. Rosali Middleman fuses alt-country and folk to create a style that feels equally twangy and gentle, as exemplified on lead single “Rewind.” It’s a gorgeous tune that underlines the beauty found within simplicity, how you’d be willing to relive the past as long as it leads you to present-day happiness. With backing musicians like David Nance and Destroyer’s Ted Bois (plus a glowing endorsement from Dan Bejar himself), Rosali is one of indie’s brightest rising stars.

Faye Webster – “Lego Ring”

On the surface, Faye Webster and Lil Yachty sound like an odd pairing. But then you dig deeper; there’s the Atlanta connection, they’ve been friends since they were both in middle school together, and their voices work remarkably well with each other’s. On “Lego Ring,” from Webster’s upcoming album, Underdressed At The Symphony, Yachty’s warbling, Auto-Tuned vocals evoke the unsteady tremolo of a Wurlitzer. He adds an otherworldly dreaminess to Webster’s equally gauzy strain of indie rock, one in which tragedy and comedy get equal billing. Since 2021’s I Know I’m Funny Haha, Webster has undergone a major breakthrough both in terms of her TikTok popularity (even surpassing Boygenius in monthly Spotify listeners) and indie stardom. Still, she doesn’t appeal to the masses on her new single. Instead, she digs her heels in and sings about Legos.

MGMT – “Nothing To Declare”

Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser are officially three for three. Every single leading up to next month’s Loss Of Life, the fifth album from MGMT, has been great, including its latest, “Nothing To Declare.” Its finger-picked, folky aura is a far cry from the synth-heavy Little Dark Age, but that’s no surprise given the psych-rock leanings of the previous two singles. “Nothing To Declare” shows that the duo is just as adept at cinematic indie-pop as they are at ‘60s-indebted esoterica.

Fat Dog – “All The Same”

When your first single is a shapeshifting, seven-minute epic, there’s no doubt that you’re taking a big risk. Nevertheless, Fat Dog put out the chameleonic post-punk opus, “King Of The Slugs,” last August, and that risk paid off handsomely. After accumulating hype opening up for Yard Act, Viagra Boys, and Shame, the UK duo’s following up on that excitement with “All The Same,” a dizzying, industrial synth-punk tune that condenses the aggression and grit outlined in “King Of The Slugs” into just a few minutes. Even with two songs to their name, these recent Domino signees are here to prove that they’re no flash in the pan.

Helado Negro – “Best For You And Me”

Phasor, the new album from Roberto Carlos Lange, is just a few weeks away now. But Lange has given us one more taste ahead of its release, the delightfully groovy “Best For You And Me.” Its woozy synths and laid-back percussion perfectly complement Lange’s soothing vocal delivery. Needless to say, Helado Negro’s latest single is nothing short of spellbinding.

Jason Kelce Will Reportedly Retire After 13 Years With The Eagles

After a 10-1 start to the season, looking to defend their NFC crown and get back to the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles fell apart to end the year, going 1-6 over their final seven games including a rather embarrassing 32-9 loss to the Buccaneers in Tampa on Monday night in the Wild Card round.

That loss and the way they finished their season figures to make the Eagles take a deep look at their roster to decide what changes they need to make. While there will be personnel and coaching decisions to be made this offseason, one decision has been taken out of their hands as All-Pro center Jason Kelce reportedly told his teammates he was retiring after 13 seasons in the NFL (all in Philly) in the locker room after the game, per Adam Schefter.

Kelce was drafted by the Eagles in 2011 and became a 6-time All-Pro and has a very strong case for ending up in Canton in the not so distant future. He was the leader of the offensive line that has been one of Philly’s strengths for years, and recently became rather famous for his work leading the nearly unstoppable Tush Push in front of Jalen Hurts.

Kelce has also become one of the most famous offensive lineman off the field, as he’s a rare lineman to break out into national endorsement deals and has his podcast with his brother Travis that has blown up over the past year. He will undoubtedly have plenty of opportunities in the media world now that his playing days are finished, so while he may not be playing anymore, one would expect to still see him plenty.

The Eagles now face a real challenge in replacing the best center in football, as a dropoff at that position is expected and the offense was already looking like it was on shaky footing in the back half of this season. That will be a difficult task that will be a top priority for a team with plenty of introspection ahead at other positions as well.

John Oliver Had A Literal Mic-Drop Moment After Hearing An Unfortunate Donald Trump Update At The Emmys

HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver took home two more Emmys on Sunday: Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. But host John Oliver’s moment of glory was interrupted by someone he’s covered many times on the show: Donald Trump.

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Oliver was informed that Trump won the Iowa caucus in a landslide victory. “Thanks very much for taking this magical moment and reminding me that joy is ephemeral, pain is forever. I’m glad I heard it first on ET,” he said. With a heavy dose of sarcasm, Oliver added, “Congratulations to Donald. This is gonna be a fun year.”

Before Oliver gets to work covering the upcoming 2024 election, he’s thrilled to celebrate his eighth-straight Emmy win, a fact he called “ridiculous… It’s weird every time. It never feels less strange to be standing on that stage, looking out at Jon Hamm holding a shiny object.”

Oliver also literally dropped the mic, which you can watch above.

Last Week Tonight has won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series eight years in a row. “I want to thank everyone at the show, especially John [Oliver], Tim [Carvell], and Liz [Stanton] for how much they backed us up during the writers strike,” writer Sofia Manfredi said while accepting the award. “They supported us all, even though a third of us are annoying.”

Dua Lipa recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, where she dished a bit more about what fans can expect from her upcoming third album. While she hasn’t revealed the title, she did drop the lead single, “Houdini,” a few months back — and is continuing to build anticipation.

Here’s everything we know so far.

Is Dua Lipa Releasing A New Album In 2024?

Dua Lipa will likely be dropping her new album sometime in 2024. “This record feels a bit more raw,” she told the publication. “I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom and having fun and just letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad. You can’t change it. You just have to roll with the punches of whatever’s happening in your life.”

When Will Dua Lipa’s New Album Come Out?

There is no exact release date for Dua Lipa’s new album yet.

Does Dua Lipa’s New Album Have A Tracklist?

Dua Lipa’s new album does not have a tracklist yet.

Did Dua Lipa Release A Single For Her New Album?

Lipa released the single “Houdini” from her new album back in November, along with a music video for it.

Will Dua Lipa’s New Album Have Features?

Right now, it’s unclear if her album will have any features. However, during an appearance on The Tonight Show, she did discuss some people she made the album with — even if they’re not full features. “With this new record, I made it with my friends Kevin Parker [of Tame Impala], Tobias Jesso Jr., Danny Harle, and Caroline Ailin, and it was kind of made like a band,” Lipa said.

What Is The Album Cover For Dua Lipa’s New Album?

The album cover has yet to be released.

Will Dua Lipa Go On Tour For Her New Album?

Considering Lipa ended her Future Nostalgia tour in 2022, and took some time to rest since then, it’s possible she could be heading back to the stage after the new album drops. However, no tour dates have been confirmed.

Dua Lipa is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Even Snoop Dogg’s Viral ‘Give Up Smoke’ Ad Couldn’t Save The CEO’s Job From Going Up In Flames

Snoop Dogg Solo Stove
Solo Stove

Last year, “That’s How We Ballin” rapper Snoop Dogg nearly knocked Earth off its axis when he announced he would give up smoke.

For days, the shocking revelation was all folks could talk about. Several musicians, including Meek Mill and Uproxx cover star Coi Leray, vowed to give up weed to follow in his footsteps. However, Snoop wasn’t talking up kicking his love for marijuana. Snoop was simply lending his likeness to the company Solo Stove for their “Give Up Smoke” advertisement. Still, the idea of Snoop no longer enjoying a fat blunt quickly helped the campaign go viral.

However, according to The Daily, despite the ad’s virality, the company saw no “substantial revenue increase.” The outlet revealed that, as a result, Solo Brands announced a significant leadership change. As of January 15, the CEO behind the ad, John Merris, is out and Christopher Metz is in as the company’s new president, chief executive officer, and director of the board.

Interim CFO Andrea Tarbox shed light on the shake-up in a statement. “While our unique marketing campaigns raised brand awareness of Solo Stove to an expanded and new audience of consumers, it did not lead to the sales lift that we had planned, which, combined with the increased marketing investments, negatively impacted our EBITDA,” she said. “We believe there is a significant opportunity for us to build awareness and that these new campaigns will expand our reach and benefit our brands over the long term.”

According to The Daily, the split was mutual.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

ariana grande

This week saw the release of a ton of great new pop music. Ariana Grande delivered the drama in her new single, “Yes, And?” and fans have loved it. Lil Nas X played basketball with the devil in his “J Christ” video. And so much more.

Check out the rest of Uproxx’s Best New Pop Music roundup below.

Ariana Grande — “Yes, And?”

Making a grand return to music, Ariana Grande isn’t holding back on “Yes, And?” — calling out the haters in the process and not caring one bit. If this energy is anything to go by, she is here and taking control of 2024. Her video also pays tribute to Paula Abdul’s “Cold Hearted,” as she shows off her top-notch dancing skills.

Lil Nas X — “J Christ”

Another big release this week was Lil Nas X, who had been teasing his new single, “J Christ.” As he declared, he’s back, just like the savior himself. The video matches the high energy by including lookalikes of famous people like Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran, and more.

Kali Uchis — “Igual Que Un Ángel” (ft. Peso Pluma)

Not only did Kali Uchis announce her pregnancy this week, but she also put out her new record, Orquídeas. Her “Igual Que Un Ángel” collab with Peso Pluma has instantly been selected as a fan-favorite. “When I wrote ‘Igual,’ it felt very complete and I didn’t think that it needed a feature but when [Peso] heard the song, he loved it and he wanted to jump on it,” Uchis opened up about their pairing during an interview with Variety. “I’m always going to encourage people to try something different.”

ITZY — “Untouchable”

ITZY released their new mini-album, Born To Be. One of the highlights among the K-Pop group’s new tracks is “Untouchable,” a larger-than-life declaration of just how good the girls are at killing it. They say it best, pointing out in the anthem that nobody is going to stop them.

Suki Waterhouse — “OMG”

“We started half the song and then put it to the side,” Waterhouse told Rolling Stone about her new song’s creation process, alongside co-writer Natalie Findlay. “We were like, ‘It’s not working.’ And then two months went by and we were back in the studio, and suddenly this chorus came out with this energy around it.”

Reneé Rapp — “World Burn”

Reneé Rapp is embracing the chaos this week, as viewers watch her return to her role of Regina George in the new Mean Girls movie. (It was adapted from the musical Rapp starred in, initially inspired by the 2004 original movie.) “World Burn” finds Rapp embracing her villainous side, as the fiery track is a fan-favorite from the musical (and the movie-musical.)

Meg Smith — “Jesus Christ In A Mini Skirt”

Meg Smith’s “Jesus Christ In A Mini Skirt” finds her embracing a duality within — as she seems to want to adapt to whatever to get a love interest. “I’m sinking in a sea I sworе I’d walk on / And I’m trying to be someone you’d want / All this timе I believed if I could just be / Jesus Christ, then you’d want me,” she vulnerably notes in the bridge.

Alok, Bebe Rexha — “Deep In Your Love”

Alok and Bebe Rexha’s new collaboration finds the dynamic duo building upon the carefree energy and passion in a romance. The two first met during Bebe’s show in Romania and would go on to work on parts of this track in Brazil — a perfect move to tap into dancefloors all around the world.

Residente — “Ron En El Piso”

Residente’s “Ron En El Piso” serves as a reflection of the Puerto Rican performer’s time in music, including in Calle 13. The themes of exploring his past cross over into the music video, which is filled with nods to his time in the group.

Niki — “24”

“The song is essentially my attempt at synthesizing my early twenties, and the many humbling things I have learned up to this point in my life — namely, learning to embrace nuance and the idea that life is rarely ever dichotomous,” Niki shared about her vulnerable “24” in a statement. “Everyone can be many things at once. Of the many takeaways I’ve gathered since turning 24, I think that’s the most freeing one.”

Ted Cruz Received An Earful After Joking About His Cancun Vacation As Texas Gears Up For The Arctic Blast

Ted Cruz
Getty Image

Ted Cruz is getting eaten alive on social media after the Texas senator thought it’d be a great idea to joke about his infamous escape to Cancun while his constituents literally froze to death during a historic winter storm.

Ahead of another life-threatening freeze headed towards the Lone Star state, Cruz tweeted the following along with a GIF of Saturday Night Live parodying the Cancun scandal.

“Texans, with the freeze coming, wrap your pipes, cover your plants, stay off icy roads & keep your family safe,” Cruz wrote. “And, if it gets too damn cold, join me in Cancun!”

It’s safe to say the “joke” didn’t land. Cruz was instantly dragged for the tone-deaf tweet as Twitter users reminded him that people died.

“Feels a bit odd to joke about getting caught going to Mexico while your constituents froze for a week and at least 246 people died but here we are,” wrote one user.

“Yeah it’s hilarious that you were at a Ritz Carlton while many of your constituents literally froze to death,” another tweeted.

“My mom was without power so long that that she had to burn bookshelves and some of her dining room chairs,” a user from Texas wrote. “I was going to risk driving 5 hours to go get her. People DIED and you thought this was appropriate.”

“Wow haha what a funny gag, Ted, hey did you know that people died during all that you cold hearted, absolute f*cking monster,” tweeted another user in what was becoming a recurring theme.

Drake Quoted Method Man And Yasiin Bey Himself In Response To Bey’s ‘Pop’ Comment: ‘Don’t Change Up Now’

Drake drink 2022
Getty Image

Oy vey. We may be three weeks into a new year, but it looks like hip-hop fans are dead set on arguing about the same ol’ bullsh*t. Over the weekend, a clip of Yasiin Bey offering some… regressive takes about Drake surfaced online and the discourse rapidly spiraled into a very tired but seemingly immortal debate about whether or not Drake counts as hip-hop. Bey, who said “Me, you, everybody, we are hip-hop,” on “Fear Not Of Man,” the literal intro of his pivotal debut Black On Both Sides, called Drake “pop,” sparking the whole debate anew, like a Hollywood producer deciding Dracula needs another remake.

Well, Drake — who, it must be said, was a huge fan of backpack rappers like Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) at the outset of his career — addressed the comments with about as poignant a response as one could under the circumstances. Instead of throwing a shot at his one-time hero, he showed just how in tune he is with hip-hop culture, quoting two titans of the culture: Method Man and Bey himself. On his Instagram Story, Drake reposted a clip of Method Man defining hip-hop as such in an old interview:

“Hip-hop is a culture. It’s a way of life, the way you dress, the way you talk, the way you walk. It’s the breakdancing, rhymes, stage show, DJ, mixing and scratching, the wordplay. That’s hip-hop.”

Drake also wondered, “What umi say again?” referencing Bey’s Black On Both Sides hit “Umi Says.” “Lemme shine my light king don’t change up now.”

For what it’s worth, Bey’s comments seem to stem from a common complaint about materialism in rap music that goes back to… well… the ’80s. However, the philosophical schism reached a boiling point in the mid-’90s, leading to the so-called “backpack rap” movement and the emergence of Mos Def and similar acts like Talib Kweli, the Spitkickers crew, and labels like Rawkus, Def Jux, and Rhymesayers gaining prominence among rap heads dissatisfied with the “jiggy” disposition being embraced by hitmakers like Tupac, The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Nas (who, let me remind you, are now all touted as about the “realest hip-hop” you can get).

Whether it’s just old head sour grapes or a legitimate concern about the direction of mainstream rap music (which… come on, man, you been banging that drum for 25 years), let’s all just hope this goes away quickly because there is absolutely no reason to still be pretending liking Yasiin Bey and Drake both is mutually exclusive in 2024.
