The ‘Deadpool 3’ Trailer Revealed A Significant ‘Loki’ Connection And A Buttload Of Marvel Easter Eggs

Deadpool 3 Trailer
Marvel

As anticipated, Marvel unleashed a trailer for Deadpool 3 during the Super Bowl, and it was the madcap first look that did not disappoint. Now titled Deadpool & Wolverine, the wild preview introduces Ryan Reynolds‘ Merc with the Mouth to the MCU where he promptly gets to work declaring himself as the Marvel Jesus. The studio could desperately use a hit after a rough 2023, and Deadpool could very easily be the Messiah that Kevin Feige is looking for.

As for how Deadpool makes the jump from the Fox movies to the MCU, that was just one of the many surprises tucked into the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer. It turns out Deadpool will get snatched up by the Time Variance Authority from Loki, which is an interesting twist. However, instead of dealing with Tom Hiddleston’s Trickster God or Owen Wilson’s Mobius, Deadpool’s handler will be Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen.

Based on the trailer, it appears that the TVA is very concerned about the state of the Sacred Timeline, which seems to be colliding with the Fox universe. (An event that was heavily hinted at in The Marvels.) For some reason, Deadpool is “special” and will play some sort of role in alleviating (or exacerbating) the fallout of whatever reality-shattering event is happening.

In the meantime, the multiversal shenanigans gave the filmmakers a chance to litter the Deadpool 3 trailer with Easter eggs, and Marvel fans had a blast trying to catch them all. We’ll break down as many as we can below:

Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom is a major Marvel villain that MCU fans are hoping will appear sooner rather than later, and take over as the next Big Bad now that Kang is being quietly sidelined follow Jonathan Majors’ conviction. That fan fever has led to wild speculation that the figure below is Doom, but honestly, we not put money on that one.

Could Doom show up in Deadpool 3? Literally anything is possible with this movie, so we’re not ruling it out. It just probably isn’t this dude.

Secret Wars

While we’re not entirely sold on Doctor Doom being spotted in the trailer, that is very clearly an issue of Secret Wars lying next to Deadpool as he waits to get stabbed by Wolverine. That particular issue is from a Secret Wars series from the mid 2010s that saw Doom basically become an all-out God as he saved the collapsing Marvel Universe by crushing it and building a new one with the help of Doctor Strange and Molecule Man.

Considering Avengers: Secret Wars is the next big Marvel event movie, Deadpool 3 is putting some significant cards on the trailer with this tiny little Easter egg.

Cassandra Nova

While Emma Corrin’s role in Deadpool & Wolverine hasn’t been officially confirmed, the overwhelming fan theory is that she will be playing Cassandra Nova. As the twin sister of Professor X, Cassandra is a wildly powerful psychic who can do some serious damage if allowed into the MCU. This screenshot of the back of what is presumably Corrin’s head, seemingly confirms her role as Nova.

Patch

Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine is no secret and has been heavily touted by Reynolds. More excitingly, Jackman will finally don Wolverine’s yellow spandex suit from the comics, and judging by the trailer, he may be rocking a few other looks from the comics, too. Most notably, his tuxedo look when working undercover as Patch.

Pyro

Last seen in X-Men: The Last Stand, Aaron Stanford is back as Pyro, which is a neat little cameo that further cements the theory that Deadpool & Wolverine will go buck wild smashing the Fox X-Men films into the MCU.

‘Moon Knight’ Ice Cream Truck

While the Fox films will clearly get a lot of love, the Deadpool 3 trailer also had some MCU Easter eggs including the ice cream truck from Moon Knight:

And, Of Course, A Deadpool Easter Egg Inside Your Deadpool Trailer

In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, one of the TVA screens is showing the pre-recorded speech of Deadpool accepting an Emmy for Welcome to Wrexham because Ryan Reynolds was too busy filming, well, Deadpool.

Deadpool & Wolverine pegs into theaters on July 26, 2024.

Did Usher Get Paid For The Super Bowl Halftime Show In 2024?

usher super bowl
Getty Image

Nope. Usher didn’t get paid for his stellar Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, no matter how good it was.

Stars who perform the Super Bowl Halftime Show are usually given a budget with which to stage the show so they aren’t coming out of pocket, but they also don’t get a check at the end of the night (or up front) as they would for a normal concert.

So, why do they do it? Because, simply put, it’s an opportunity to get their faces and work in front of the biggest television audience in pop culture today. For instance, going into this show, some fans were actively questioning whether Usher was someone who should be doing the Super Bowl, wondering if he was “big enough” for TV’s biggest moment.

Now, after the performance, not only have those skeptics largely been converted, but many of them will also be checking out Usher’s catalog, or checking for him in the future. To paraphrase Shaq: They weren’t familiar with his game, but they are now.

In the past, stars have seen enormous streaming increases as curious viewers do their research, including Dr. Dre, Rihanna, and even Spongebob Squarepants. So, even if Usher didn’t get paid, it’s still extremely worth it, as those streaming bumps can result in big payouts when those royalty checks roll in. The Super Bowl is one time that getting paid in exposure is worth just as much as a check.

Who Performed With Usher At The Super Bowl Halftime Show?

Usher has been a premier showman for decades now, so it’s not surprising that he put on quite the performance for his Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show yesterday (February 11). Some surprises, though, came via the guests that Usher recruited to join him on the field. So, let’s run through who Usher performed alongside for his big moment (aside from the hundreds and dancers and backing musicians who were also involved).

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Alicia Keys

Usher started off solo, performing at least portions of “Caught Up,” “U Don’t Have To Call,” “Superstar,” and “Love In This Club.” Then, Alicia Keys emerged as the first guest, playing piano as she and Usher sang “If I Ain’t Got You” before transitioning into their chart-topping 2004 duet “My Boo.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Jermaine Dupri

Next was “Confessions Part II,” which featured an introduction from Jermaine Dupri.

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: HER

Usher ran through “Nice & Slow” and “Burn” by himself before HER played guitar (and absolutely shredded) on “U Got It Bad” and “Bad Girl.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: will.i.am

Immediately after HER was will.i.am’s turn, who emerged for a quick portion of “OMG,” his and Usher’s No. 1 hit from 2010.

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Lil Jon

Then it was onto Lil Jon, whose distinctive gravely yell introduced a snippet of his and DJ Snake’s “Turn Down For What.”

Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show: Ludacris

Lil Jon stuck around for the next song as the performance headed into the finale. “Turn Down For What” transitioned into “Yeah!,” so naturally, this was Ludacris’ turn to pop up.

A ‘Jeopardy!’ Producer Explained Why Ken Jennings ‘Won The Job’ Over Mayim Bialik

Last December, Mayim Bialik announced that she would no longer host Jeopardy!. “For all of you who have supported me through this incredible journey and to the fans, contestants, writers, staff, and crew of America’s Favorite Quiz Show, thank you,” she wrote on Instagram at the time. The game show’s executive producer, Michael Davies, has finally opened up about why they decided to ditch Bialik in favor of Ken Jennings.

According to TVLine, Davies told reporters during the Television Critics Association winter press tour over the weekend that Bialik was “a superb host,” but in the end, “Ken really won the job.” Following the Mike Richards fiasco, hosting duties were split between the former The Big Bang Theory actress and Jennings, “but over the past two and a half seasons, what we’ve heard a lot from our television stations and other interested parties is they were looking for more consistency, they wanted a single host,” Davies explained.

In a May 2023 interview, Davies had stated that there was “zero difference” in the ratings for Bialik-hosted episodes vs. Jennings, adding that there were no “absolute” data that points to one being more popular than the other. “I back both of them,” he declared at the time. “I go to the studio every day and try to make both of them better at hosting the show and make a better program environment around them. They have my full support.”

Here’s an idea: let the accidental dirty gesture lady host the show. She’s earned it.

Glen Powell Is The ‘Tornado Wrangler’ In The Completely Absurd (And Cow-Free) ‘Twisters’ Trailer

Twister starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton as married-but-estranged storm chasers in the 1996 blockbuster that pulled in $241 million at the box office. Most people, I would suspect, recall the irritated cow flying through the air more than anything else. Oh, and also that Oklahomans were portrayed as, well, idiots. The not-a-sequel followup, Twisters, appears to be missing both elements, although there is a livestock-shaped piece of billboard that goes flying by in the early moments of the above Universal Pictures trailer.

The movie also hails from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and you know this movie is going to be even more dramatic than the original because it’s called Twisters after a pair of “twins” chased by the crew. Also prominently figuring as the “Tornado Wrangler” is movie star Glen Powell, star of Maverick and that romcom where he and Sydney Sweeney pretend to hate each other. Whereas Daisy Edgar-Jones (Fresh, Under the Banner of Heaven) portrays an ex-storm chaser who is terrified to get back in the game.

The real-world twist here is that the massive twisters depicted in this movie generally (knock on wood) do not hit Oklahoma these days. That pattern has largely shifted east, but of course, it’s fun to put an Okie twist on a Glen Powell character. From the synopsis:

Edgar-Jones stars as Kate Cooper, a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew, the more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives.

Twisters (hopefully) slams into the box office on July 19.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm
Getty Image/Derrick Rossignol

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Usher have his biggest week in a while and Kacey Musgraves make her big return. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

Usher and Burna Boy — “Coming Home”

Usher just had a milestone moment with his first Super Bowl Halftime Show, but let’s not forget that the performance was preceded by Coming Home, his first new album in six years. The project kicks off with the title track, a Burna Boy collaboration that opens the album with a smooth groove.

Latto — “Sunday Service”

Apologies to our vegetarian readers, but Latto is slinging beef on “Sunday Service.” It’s clear she’s taking shots at some of her rap contemporaries here, seemingly including Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj.

Kacey Musgraves — “Deeper Well”

While Musgraves’ Grammys album teasers may have been overshadowed by Taylor Swift’s big album announcement, Musgraves’ first preview of the album. Days after the show, she shared “Deeper Well,” a folky slow-burner that sees her reflecting on love and getting older.

Conan Gray — “Lonely Dancers”

Gray has been on a real ’80s kick with the singles from his upcoming album Found Heaven and it’s been fantastic. The latest is “Lonely Dancers,” another dose of retro-leaning synth-pop that has perfectly acclimated to the current music climate while keeping a loving eye on the past.

Noah Kahan and Brandi Carlile — “You’re Gonna Go Far”

One of 2023’s biggest breakout stars has kept the momentum going into 2024 with Stick Season (Forever), an expanded version of his latest album. Included on the new tracklist is a link-up with Brandi Carlile on “You’re Gonna Go Far,” on which Carlile’s harmony vocals prove to be a perfect accompaniment to Kahan’s lead (and her own verse kicks ass, too).

GloRilla — “Yeah Glo!”

GloRilla has enjoyed quite the rise over the past couple years and the Grammy-nominated rapper knows it, as she demonstrates on “Yeah Glo!.” The tune is full of confidence, seeing the rapper understanding her place in the rap landscape and life.

Maggie Rogers — “Don’t Forget Me”

Last week was a strong one for new beginnings, as Maggie Rogers also announced a new album, Don’t Forget Me. While Rogers kicked off her Surrender era in 2022 with the big pop lead single “That’s Where I Am,” the Don’t Forget Me title track sees Rogers more in folk-inspired singer-songwriter territory this time around.

Caroline Polachek — “Butterfly Net” Feat. Weyes Blood

Polachek has her deluxe Desire, I Want To Turn Into You (Everasking Edition) dropping in a few days, and among the extras included is a new version of “Butterfly Net.” Weyes Blood contributes to the fresh take on the otherworldly tune, taking it to an even more elevated place.

Kaliii — “Bozo”

Recent Uproxx cover star Kaliii had a big 2023 thanks to her viral hit “Area Codes,” but we’re onto 2024 now, and she’s still delivering with songs like last week’s “Bozo.” The tune is built on a sample of Keyshia Cole’s “Love” and sees the rapper weaving a tale about infidelity and moving on.

Faye Webster — “Feeling Good Today”

Following her fun Lil Yachty collab, Webster is continuing the rollout of her upcoming album Underdressed At The Symphony. She unveiled “Feeling Good Today” last week, and it’s a quick 90-second number that offers a relatable slice of life and look at her mindset, with lyrics like, “I’m feeling good today / I ate before noon,” and, “I got paid yesterday / I’ll probably buy something dumb / Because I am pretty childish.”

Billie Eelish (Not A Typo) And Doja Catfish Prove Nickelodeon Clearly Had The Most Fun Super Bowl LVIII Broadcast

Billie Eilish Super Bowl Nickelodeon
Nickelodeon

Jim Nantz and Tony Romo are two of the best in the business when it comes to football broadcasting, which is why they were tasked with calling Super Bowl LVIII for CBS this weekend. So, all due respect to them and everybody else involved in the CBS broadcast, but Nickelodeon’s Super Bowl coverage was so clearly the most fun way to watch the big game.

Need proof? Take a look at the celebrities who were in attendance on the Nick broadcast. Offering some shots of CGI fish characters made to look like famous folks, Nick showed off aquatic music stars like Billie Eelish, Doja Catfish, and Herring Styles in the Bikini Bottom stands, along with other celebs like LePrawn James, Clamuel L. Jackson, and Fin Diesel.

Nick had a ton of fun beyond that, too. “Sweet Victory” finally made its first appearance at the big game. On top of that, SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star were on hand to provide in-game commentary, alongside Noah Eagle and Nate Burleson. At one point during the game, the camera cut to Leonardi DiCaprio in attendance, and Tom Kenny (voicing SpongeBob as he has since 1999) had a great quip: “Leonardo DiCaprio, 25. That was about his dating history,” a perfect reference to this classic SpongeBob scene.

Beyoncé Launched Her Country Era During The Super Bowl With Two New Singles, ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ And ’16 Carriages’

Music is always a huge part of the Super Bowl, but that was especially true this weekend. Post Malone, Reba McEntire, and Andra Day sang pre-game; Kaskade was the in-game DJ; Usher crushed it with his halftime show; and Taylor Swift was in attendance to watch the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime.

Then there was Beyoncé, who decided to make the big game her moment by announcing new music with a commercial. Not only did she tease “Act II,” but she also dropped two new songs, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.”

Both tunes indicate that “Act II” is Beyoncé’s country era. “Texas Hold ‘Em” has a bit of a “Home” by Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeros energy but with more twang, meaning it’s a jaunty and catchy folk-leaning number. “16 Carriages,” meanwhile, is more of a slow and dynamic country ballad. While neither song sounds like most of what Beyoncé has done lately, she’s a pro and she sounds as comfortable in this space as one might expect from a performer of her caliber.

Renaissance, Beyoncé’s previous album, is sometimes referred to as Act I: Renaissance, so it remains to be seen what the full title of “Act II” is (or if it does just end up being Act II). Whatever the case, it appears to be coming out soon.

Listen to “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” above.

Teenager creates eye-opening videos that shatter stereotypes surrounding autism and girls

The most recent data shows that about one in 68 children in the U.S. are affected by autism and boys are four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is marked by communication and social difficulties, sensory processing issues, and inflexible patterns of behavior. Almost everything that researchers have learned about the disorder is based on data derived from studies of boys.

However, researchers are starting to learn that ASD manifests differently in girls. This has led many girls to be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

“The model that we have for a classic autism diagnosis has really turned out to be a male model,” Susan F. Epstein, PhD, a clinical neuropsychologist said according to Child Mind.

“That’s not to say that girls don’t ever fit it, but girls tend to have a quieter presentation, with not necessarily as much of the repetitive and restricted behavior, or it shows up in a different way,” Epstein added.

Stereotypical ASD behaviors may also get in the way of recognizing the disorder in girls.

“So where the boys are looking at train schedules, girls might have excessive interest in horses or unicorns, which is not unexpected for girls,” Dr. Epstein notes. “But the level of the interest might be missed and the level of oddity can be a little more damped down. It’s not quite as obvious to an untrained eye.”

Girls with ASD are usually better at hiding their autistic behaviors, so they suffer in silence.

Paige Layle, a 19-year-old eyelash technician from Ontario, Canada, has autism but because she’s a social butterfly, most people don’t realize she has the disorder.

“I get that a lot, that because I’m good-looking, nothing can be wrong with me — so I want to show that mental illness is diverse,” Layle told BuzzFeed.

To help people better understand how autism manifests in girls and women, Layle has made a series of videos on her TikTok page.

“I decided to start making videos because of an audio that was going all over TikTok that was making fun of autistic people. I hated it. I feel like many people don’t understand how many people are autistic,” she said.

Layle’s videos are eye-opening because they shatter some big myths about autism and show how difficult it can be to live with the disorder, especially if you don’t know you have it.

@paigelayle learn more about autism! 🙂 i get many questions every day to make more vids about it, i will continue to show you guys! #feature #fup #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound – paigelayle

In the first video, she explains how the initial research done on autism was only on boys or men.

“Girls usually end up showing different traits than guys do. Which is why it can take us years to get diagnosed. I was 15 when I got diagnosed and that’s considered early for a girl.”

She also explains that girls often are diagnosed later because they are better at hiding autistic behaviors.

“This is something we call masking. Masking is basically just being like a really good actor.

It’s where you take traits that everyone else is showing and start portraying them as yourself. It’s like a lot of copying going on. … In your mind you don’t think you’re copying. You think that this is normal and everyone feels the same way you do.

You basically feel like an alien and you’re really good at hiding that. Which is why I don’t seem autistic.”

In part two, she discusses the idea of being high-functioning.

@paigelayle no such thing as high/ low functioning autism!!! it’s just how YOU perceive us. not about how we’re affected. #feature #featureme #fup #fyp ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“Get high-functioning and low functioning out of your vocabulary. It doesn’t help anybody. I know you may think that saying ‘Oh like you’re high-functioning’ is compliment. It’s not a compliment. It’s also like a reminder that I’m just masking, and it’s so hard.

Masking is the most exhausting thing in the world… ‘High-functioning’ is basically a label that you can use to be like ‘Your autism doesn’t affect me that much.’ But I’ll tell you that everyone you think is high-functioning is greatly affected by their autism.”

In part three, Paige discusses common autistic traits that girls have.

@paigelayle more on special interests later ☺️ #feature #autism #fyp #fyp #featureme ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“I am overly social. I give way too much eye contact. I’m really good in social situations. It’s also very common for girls with autism to have other mental disabilities or mental disorders as well. I have seven and one of the main ones is OCD.

All of these mental illnesses stem from having autism. But OCD, anxiety, and depression are very common, especially in girls. Just the feeling that the world needs rules for you to understand it. That’s why a lot of autism special interests include things like anatomy, the human body, psychology, just figuring out how the world works is our way to figure out how to live in it.”

In part four, Paige discusses the topic of masking.

@paigelayle ahhh masking. can’t live with you, can’t live without you. #feature #fup #fyp #featureme #autism ♬ original sound – paigelayle

“When you’re in the autistic closet and you are not known to be autistic yet … you like subconsciously know that you’re weird and you don’t know how to act or how to be.

It’s like the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you wear your hair, like your mannerisms. Like everything you say. Everything you think. Everything you think that you enjoy. It’s all what you are accustomed to from your peers.

I’ve been diagnosed for four years and I’m still trying to figure out who I am and what I actually like to do. You just get to used to creating this mask that when it’s like ‘Hey, you can take it off,’ It’s like what the frick is underneath it? I don’t know what’s going on.”
