The Celtics Will Reportedly Acquire Xavier Tillman From The Grizzlies

Despite possessing the best record in the NBA, the Boston Celtics have found a way to upgrade their roster as they gear up for a playoff run. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Boston worked out a deal one day before the trade deadline with the Memphis Grizzlies with the hopes of reinforcing their its frontcourt.

Wojnarowski reports that the Celtics are acquiring Xavier Tillman, a fourth-year center who has been a reliable member of the team’s center rotation. In exchange, Memphis will get a pair of second-round draft picks in 2027 and 2030 and Lamar Stevens.

While Boston is going to lean heavily on Kristaps Porzingis at the 5 whenever he’s healthy, Tillman has accrued plenty of playoff experience over the last two years, and should give them another option when Porzingis is off the floor. He’ll join a center rotation that also includes Al Horford and Luke Kornet, although the Celtics are able to use Horford as a 4 or a 5. This season, Tillman has appeared in 34 games with 13 starts, and has averaged six points and 4.6 rebounds in 20.6 minutes per game.

The Grizzlies entered this season with aspirations of going on a run in the Western Conference, but have one of the worst records in the league due to a remarkably unfortunate run of injuries. They currently sit at 18-33, which is the seventh-worst record in the NBA.

The Best Additive-Free Reposado Tequilas Under $70, Ranked

ADd Free
Uproxx

When it comes to delicious and noteworthy additive-free reposado tequilas, ~$70 is the absolute sweet spot. This is a price point that is relatively accessible for people who are interested in diving deeper into their exploration of tequila and love the mellow characteristics of reposado. On the flip side, these bottles can also appeal to seasoned tequila veterans — those looking for a quality bottle to keep stocked at all times.

Today, we’re pointing you in the direction of bottles that are an absolute steal and even introducing some with a depth of flavor that matches up with bottles exceeding $100. that said, I’m going to go ahead and street clear from mentioning a few of the more obvious bottles that have shown up on our various tequila lists in the past. You won’t find Fortaleza, El Tesoro, or Mijenta on this list, but they all deserve honorable mention status. We’ve covered those bottles many times already and they’re well-regarded amongst tequila drinkers, so you’ve probably already heard of them by now.

We want to give some other deserving bottles a chance to shine rather than the usual suspects. Let’s dive into the best additive-free reposado tequilas under $70, ranked from good to great.

8. La Gritona Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Total Wine

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $44.99

The Tequila:

Right off the bat, I love La Gritona’s bottle design. Bottle design never factors into the actual flavor of the tequila, but I always appreciate great aesthetics, so points there. I won’t let it weigh into where I rank this tequila (clearly), but I thought it was worth mentioning.

This tequila is produced at NOM 1533, Vinos y Licores Azteca, from single estate agave that is cooked in stone ovens, roller mill extracted, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and distilled in a steel pot. For the repo, La Gritona ages its tequila for 8 months in used whiskey barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: There are some nice grassy and vegetal characteristics on the nose, which are rarely present in a reposado. As a blanco fan, I appreciate that. Aside from the brighter notes are your usual suspects: roasted agave, a bit of vanilla, and a hint of oak.

Palate: Vanilla and black pepper dominate the palate mixed with a blunt and wince-inducing alcohol flavor.

Finish: A pleasing mix of cinnamon caramel, slight minerality, and oak tannins.

The Bottom Line:

I like the brighter and grassy notes on this tequila, which is a rarity for reposado. But the alcohol bitterness keeps me away from sipping this one. Love it in a cocktail but I wish it was a bit more versatile.

7. Chamucos Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Total Wine

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $54.99

The Tequila:

We shouted out Chamucos blanco expression in our best additive-free tequilas under $50, and while that’s a great bottle for the price, the reposado is where the real magic happens. That probably has to do with the fact that long before Chamucos had multiple expressions, it started with reposado. It’s the brand’s flagship bottle in our opinion.

Produced at NOM 1586, Destileria Casa de Piedra, where it is one of five brands. For this reposado, the agave is cooked in stone ovens, roller mill extracted, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and distilled in a stainless still pot.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: There is a lot of warmth here, rich vanilla, sweet caramel, and cinnamon mingle with caramelized agave. A big whiff will bring out a peppery character and some butter.

Palate: Heavy on the vanilla, cinnamon, and pepper. You’re not going to get a lot of grassy notes or any brightness here, this leans on the dessert side, with some fruity characteristics.

Finish: Earthy and dry with more cracked pepper on the finish, and a sort of lactic, creamy mouthfeel.

The Bottom Line:

Sweet on the palate but dry and earthy on the finish. There is an interesting subtle harshness here that mingles nicely with the more dessert-like tones.

6. TCapri — Tequila Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
TCapri

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $64.99

The Tequila:

We shouted out TCapri’s tequila blanco in our best tequilas of 2023 list, and now it’s time to highlight the reposado expression. This is a relatively new brand on the scene, and a new brand to me (I still have my very first bottle, though next time I crack it open it’ll be gone). The agave here is cooked in brick ovens, roller mill extracted, fermented in open-air vats with natural yeast, and made with filtered volcanic well water at NOM 1584, the famed Tequila El Tepozan.

To reach the repo state, the tequila is aged for 6 months in American white oak barrels before being hand-poured into its bottle.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Underneath the cooked agave I’m getting a slight hint of crushed cinnamon sticks and licorice.

Palate: Melon rinds mixed with zesty citrus and delicate floral notes contrasted by roasted agave and more cinnamon.

Finish: It starts off smooth before finishing dry. This is where the oak really makes its presence.

The Bottom Line:

A relatively new tequila with a bright and natural fruity flavor. Not the most mellow of reposados, but this is a great candidate for mixing into a cocktail.

5. ArteNOM Seleccion de 1414 Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
ArteNOM

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $69.99

The Tequila:

Another light straw-colored reposado (so light your pour will appear clear), this tequila is made using sweet and floral highland agave that is halved and then quartered before being cooked in brick kiln ovens for 36 hours, roller mill extracted, and fermented in stainless steel vats and double distilled in traditional copper pot stills.

ArteNOM is produced at NOM 1414, Feliciano Vivanco y Asociados, along with 37 other brands.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Roasted agave mixed with rich vanilla and floral honey.

Palate: A lot of cinnamon spice and vanilla on the palate, with notes of licorice, butterscotch, and an herbaceous quality that at times leans minty.

Finish: A mix of oak and black pepper with a buttery, almost oily mouthfeel.

The Bottom Line:

Pretty much the sweetest reposado without additives that you’re going to find.

4. Siete Leguas Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Siete Leguas

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $55.49

The Tequila:

This beautiful light amber-colored reposado from Siete Leguas is a must-drink. Hailing from NOM 1120, Tequila Siete Leguas, where it is the only brand in production, this tequila is cooked low and slow in stone brick ovens, roller mill extracted, and aged for eight months in American white oak barrels

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Warm agave notes waft from the pour with an inviting herbaceousness and some zesty citrus.

Palate: More warmth on the palate with some vanilla and citrus notes mingling with oak and the slightest hint of wet grass.

Finish: The finish has this wonderful dry quality to it as notes of oak, earth, and a little eat linger on the tongue.

The Bottom Line:

Very mellow and comforting, Siete Leguas is a sip-worth repo with a very natural and subtle flavor profile.

3. Don Fulano Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Don Fulano

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $63.99

The Tequila:

You really can’t go wrong with any of Don Fulano’s expressions, but if I had to single out one it would be this reposado. Produced at NOM 1146, Tequileña, home of higher-end brands like Cierto and Tears of Llorona, this tequila is made from agave harvested from the highlands of Jalisco that are cooked for 28 to 32 hours, extracted in a screw mill, and fermented in open tanks for 72 to 96 hours.

To reach that repo state the tequila is aged for 8 to 11 months in French Limousin oak casks, giving it that light straw color.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Crushed black pepper tickles the nose with rich vanilla undertones and a strong agave presence.

Palate: Sweet stone fruit mixed with coconut, cinnamon, caramel, and orange zest. It’s almost dessert-like but has a vegetal quality and some herbs and grass keep it from tasting too sweet and overwhelming.

Finish: Soft oak notes with a nice kick of spice on the backend that slowly fades. Once that spice is off the tongue, that’s your cue to take another sip.

The Bottom Line:

A nice mix of sweet and vegetal flavors with a wonderful spicy finish. A great sipper for sure.

2. Volans — Tequila Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Volans

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $65.99

The Tequila:

Another new brand on my radar, Volans is produced at NOM 1579, El Pandillo Distillery. The agave here is steamed for three hours to remove impurities before being slow-roasted for 19 to 22 hours, then rested for 24 to 36 hours before being extracted by a tahona, and fermented in stainless steel open-air tanks. The tequila is rested in used American white oak bourbon barrels for just under a year.

There is a lot of resting going on with this tequila! And considering the wonderful depth of flavors, I’d say it’s worth it. This tequila came incredibly close to winning the top spot in this ranking, but ultimately, because of the higher price here, I had to give it second place.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: A rich mix of caramel and roasted agave with a strong oak character and the slightest hint of wet grass.

Palate: Cinnamon, caramel, and vanilla mingle with lots of minerality, a bit of salt, and wet soil quality. It’s earthy and warm, but rich and luxurious. A real bouquet of experiences here.

Finish: A mix of dessert-like sweetness and black pepper with an oily buttered mouthfeel. It leaves the tongue wanting more.

The Bottom Line:

A wonderful tequila that has a real earthy natural quality to it evenly mixed with sweet and luxurious flavors. A true joy to sip.

1. Tequila Ocho Reposado

Reposado Additive Free
Tequila Ocho

ABV: 40%
Average Price: $54.99

The Tequila:

I’m a big fan of Tequila Ocho’s blanco and añejo expressions, and I haven’t been avoiding the reposado for any other reason than I had yet to get my hands on a bottle. Well, that finally changed this month and it was worth the wait, this is now my favorite expression from the brand.

Produced at NOM 1474, Tequilera Los Alambiques, where it is one of two brands produced, the agave here is cooked slowly in brick ovens, extracted via a roller mill, and fermented in open-air wood vats before being twice distilled in a copper pot before being rested for 8 weeks and 8 days (get it? Ocho) in American white oak, old whiskey and used barrels.

Rich fruits with vanilla and butterscotch. Sweet cooked agave, sweet spice, cinnamon, notes of vanilla, rested for 8 weeks and 8 days in ex-American oak whiskey barrels, translucent amber color, long and creamy finish.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: You get a lot of the oak character on the nose mingling with rich caramelized agave, crushed black peppercorn, zesty orange rind, and earthy rainwater.

Palate: A light sense of vanilla hovers over a green and grassy flavor with hints of warm caramel, rosemary, citrus, and some minerality.

Finish: Dry and oaky contrasted with tropical coconuts and a slight creaminess.

The Bottom Line:

A true pleasure to drink. Wonderful to sip, and complex in a cocktail, this is a bar cart staple, and for the price it punches way above its weight.

Living on a cruise ship just became a real option thanks to a new ‘residential’ cruise line

Imagine spending every day exploring wondrous locations, eating expertly crafted meals, enjoying year-round indulgence … could there be anything better?

Taking a lifelong cruise might sound like something out of a dream, and an unrealistic one at that. But leaving the land behind and adopting a seafaring lifestyle is now more attainable than ever.

By 2024, cruise line Storylines will launch a 741-foot ship dubbed the MV Narrative, a huge vessel containing 547 fully furnished rooms available for purchase or lease.

The cruise will definitely be the stuff of luxury, with its high-end spas, movie theater, yoga sun deck, state-of-the-art fitness center, art studio … it even has a bowling alley, for crying out loud. But being a “residential community at sea,” there will also be things like a library, post office, school and bank.

Perhaps the funnest part—in addition to extended stays in exotic locations—residents will have a say in where the vessel goes. “What a typical cruise line might do in one month or three weeks, we will take three to four months to do,” Storylines founder and CEO Alister Punton told CNN Travel, adding that the residents “have opportunities to have input into where the ship goes next.” These “residents choice” days allow those on board to choose the ports of call.

Is MV Narrative the only residential ship to sail the seven seas? No. The World has offered residential living since 2002, according to The Real Deal. Other lines, like Utopia and Victoria Cruises, also offer an all-inclusive lifestyle.

However, it could be the most eco-friendly. Travel and Leisure noted that the ship will run on clean-burning liquid gas and have a zero-waste farmers market selling local products. “We will definitely be the greenest cruise ship out there,” Punton shared with CNN Travel.

Travel and Leisure states the MV Narrative’s current listing price range from $1 million to $8 million to own, with a small number of 24-year leases available from $600,000, which works out to around $25,000 per year.

Of course, if you were to forgo any homeownership and chose instead to live the life of a nomad, a lifelong cruise could be an even cheaper and more accessible option. Earlier this year, retired couple Angelyn and Richard Burk made headlines by fulfilling their travel dreams of hopping from ship to ship … all for around $36,000. Yep, less than an average mortgage. It’s no wonder why this is such a popular trend for adventurous folks of retirement age.

This might be because people are attracted to having both adventure and the comfort of home, which Storylines provides. “At the end of a long day discovering a new exotic location, they can come home to friends and familiar surroundings and sleep in their own bed,” Storylines co-founder, Shannon Lee, wrote in an email to Travel and Leisure.

What a time to be alive, when you can travel the world and never leave home.

Incredible audio shows what WWI sounded like when the guns and bombs just suddenly stopped

On November 11, 1918, U.S.soldier Robert Casey wrote from the American front in Western Europe:

And this is the end of it. In three hours the war will be over. It seems incredible even as I write it. I suppose I ought to be thrilled and cheering. Instead I am merely apathetic and incredulous … There is some cheering across the river—occasional bursts of it as the news is carried to the advanced lines. For the most part, though, we are in silence … With all is a feeling that it can’t be true. For months we have slept under the guns … We cannot comprehend the stillness.

It was the 11th day of the 11th month, and the war was scheduled to end with a ceasefire at the 11th hour—11:00 a.m. exactly. It had been four years of bloody, brutal fighting in what would later be called World War I. (Ironically, the war that was dubbed “the war to end all wars.”)

The sense of relief at the ceasefire had to have been palpable, and thanks to modern technology, we can get an idea of what it sounded like to have the constant gunfire, artillery shells, fighter planes and bombs just…stop.

The following audio is not a recording, since magnetic tape recording technology didn’t exist in WWI. It’s a sound recreation based on visual “sound ranging” recordings the military used to determine where enemy fire was coming from. Special units placed microphones in the ground and used photographic film to visually record the noise intensity of gunfire, similarly to how seismometer measures an earthquake.

The lines you see in the film below are vibrations from noises at the River Moselle on the American Front, which were interpreted by sound company Coda to Coda using meticulous research on the kinds of weaponry that would have been used and how far away they were, even taking into account the geography of the area.

The result is the sounds soldiers would have heard during the last minute of World War I. Listen:

The little bird chirp at the end really punctuates it, doesn’t it? Beautiful, yet haunting.

The fact that there was an exact minute when opposing forces agreed to lay down their arms and then did so is a bit surreal. If you know you’re going to stop shooting, why wait for a few hours and keep shooting one another? Why not just say, “Stop, we’re done now”? Communication took time and the various forces needed to be informed of the ceasefire agreement, so it makes some sense, but still. The armistice agreement was signed six hours before the ceasefire. In those six hours—when peace had already been agreed upon—3,000 soldiers were killed. Talk about senseless deaths.

Of all the things humans have devised and systematized, war is probably the weirdest. Leaders get into disputes over political or geographic particulars, and then one says, “I’m going to send my people to kill your people.” Another responds, “If your people kill my people, then my people will kill your people.” Then the worst of human atrocities are perpetrated by people who would normally never dream of doing such things to one another until, at some point, they’ve all have had enough of the senseless destruction, the leaders come to some kind of agreement and say, “OK, our people will no longer kill each other. Good talk.”

Of course, it’s all a bit more complicated than that, but at the same time, it’s not. War as a concept is simply stupid and stupidly simple. Humanity in general does seem to have grasped the stupidity of it, as we’ve been making global progress toward a more peaceful world for many decades. But as conflicts ignite and violence explode in certain regions, we feel the tenuousness of that progress, which makes peacemaking skills all the more valuable.

Twenty million people were killed in WWI, more than half of them civilians. Many of them died from famine and disease brought on by the conditions of war. This audio is a reminder that these things don’t just happen—they are choices that human beings make. Destruction and diplomacy are both choices. Retaliation and restoration are choices. War and peace are choices.

We’ve tried choosing war followed by peace, many times over. Maybe we should try choosing peace without having to go through the stupid, senseless killing part first.

Unearthed video shows Tom Jones singing with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, leaving them in awe

Nineteen-sixty-nine was a pivotal year in American culture. The hippies and the counterculture were ascendant, and everything that came before in entertainment was as square as can be.

In cinema, there was the world before and after 1969’s “Easy Rider.” In music, the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair was a defining moment for the new era, and on television, the anti-establishment “Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” divided households over its anti-war stance.

In September of that year, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSN&Y) were asked to play a duet with Welsh singer Tom Jones on his television show and the pairing was a perfect example of the culture clash. Jones was famous for his hit songs “It’s Not Unusual” and “What’s New Pussycat?” and was adept at dodging panties being thrown at him by the adoring ladies in the audience.

CSN&Y had just played Woodstock and were known for the anti-war anthem “Wooden Ships” and “Long Time Gone” about the assassination of Robert Kennedy.

For the performance, Jones and CSN&Y played a rendition of “Long Time Gone,” and what’s impressive is that Jones does not hold back and forced the rest of the band to keep up. Steven Stills, on electric piano, tries his best to match Jones’ bravado on his lines but falls short.

David Crosby has a look on his face of pure awe when he looks at Jones (although he was known for being in “awe” quite often in the days).

Throughout the performance, the hard-to-impress Neil Young seemingly goes from a look of pure disdain to “This rocks.” The performance is an excellent example of music’s ability to bridge cultural divides and bring people together.

‘I’m shaking.’ Woman spots her future husband in a photo years before they actually met

A woman named Jen Chia is having even the most cynical of us reconsidering the existence of fated encounters after finding an old selfie with her husband Jon visible in the background…years before they even met.

On Instagram, Jenn wrote “I’m still shaking looking at this,” sharing a photo taken in Oct 2012, where she appeared to be enjoying a drink at what appears to be a theater.

Behind her we see a bearded man casually standing with a backpack. That man was apparently Jon. Both were completely oblivious to their future significant others.

“We were at the same place but didn’t know each other existed,” she wrote.

Cut to a photo of Jenn and Jon on an amusement park ride, 2 years laters, when they officially met, then to a wedding photo, 9 years after that.

A few viewers linked it to the viral “invisible string theory,” which is the idea that one’s ideal partner is hidden in plain sight, until the universe decides it’s the best time for you both to meet. It’s a concept based on the Chinese mythology that has found new life on TikTok, similar to the ”shoe theory,” though that’s more about fated break-ups.

Whether the timing was part of fate’s plan or not, Jenn agrees that things worked out as they should.

In her vidoe’s caption, Jenn shared, “We met at the right time. If it was before, I don’t think the relationship would have lasted. I was a narcissistic monster, unaware and naive.”

“Took me a year of traveling and being single to reflect and realize my own mistakes. That’s when we met,” she added. “The right person will always find you at the right time.”

In the comments Jon agreed, saying, “So glad you didn’t meet me in the first picture. We were meant to go on our own journeys. We met a few years later at the perfect time 😍”

Proving that these sort of kismet connections are perhaps more common than you think, previously Upworthy covered a similar story of a young woman who was going through old school photos when she discovered her late mother had been her current boyfriend’s kindergarten teacher.

From a purely scientific perspective, there is no irrefutable evidence that fated relationships exist. Still, many of us have felt inexplicably charged by connections and coincidences. Plus, research has shown that having a little magical thinking when it comes to love, like believing something is “meant to be” can help lead to more committed relationships.

Maybe Jenn and Jon are cosmically intertwined. Or maybe they are two people simply in the right place at the right time. Either way, their love story is a fun reminder that life is so often trying to work with us, not against us.

Dave Ramsey is caught off guard by the exorbitant cost of daycare when caller asks for advice

Dave Ramsey is a financial guru who is famous for creating the “envelope method” to help stay on a budget and pay off debt. Churches across America have had him come in and help their congregation with becoming debt free, so it’s safe to say he’s built a solid following.

People generally find his advice really helpful and swear by his methods. But in a recent episode of his podcast, The Ramsey Show, it would appear the price of daycare in America might have proven to be a bit out of his depth. A caller sought Ramsey’s show out for help to figure out how to save money as he and his wife have found themselves in a cycle of borrowing money to make ends meet.

Ramsey is confused when he learns the caller makes approximately $180K a year but the confusion turns to bewildered when the man explains childcare eats up $80k annually.

Once the man adds in student loan payments, mortgage and basic living expenses, the couple struggles. Ramsey nor his cohosts seem to understand how or why the family pays that much for two children to attend daycare. The financial guru even tosses out that the couple should “find free summer camps.” Ramsey’s suggestions were so inaccessible that parents flocked to the comments to tell him that he may need to sit this one out.

The cost of childcare is directly related to the cost of living in the state in which you reside. Generally childcare is cheaper in southern states, but even though this is true, daycare for my child averaged just under $14K per year in the state of North Carolina. This wasn’t the fanciest daycare in the small town we lived in at the time, but it was safe and developmentally appropriate, both things that were important to me and my husband. The price tag was also for one child and did not include extended care hours.

@daveramsey

This couple is spending $80,000 a year for child care. #childcare #daycare #moneytok

But the caller needed extended care and was paying for two children to attend the childcare facility. A 2022 annual report from Care.com reveals that 67% of parents spend 20% or more of their household income on childcare costs. This is staggering when compared to the 7% the US Department of Health and Human Services says marks the affordable threshold.

Care.com ranked Washington D.C. as the most expensive place for daycare, parents of infants pay about $419 per week for one child, while in Arkansas, parents can expect to pay $129 per week for daycare. The idea of free summer camp would be laughable if it wasn’t something families desperately need. But Ramsey must not be aware that there isn’t a such thing as free summer camp unless you qualify for a low income subsidy program. The lower cost summer programs are still pretty pricy, especially if you have more than one child and others only offer child care for a few hours.

It’s no wonder parents had a lot to say, some making their own videos to show the financial consultant exactly how parents spend large quantities of money on childcare.

“Dave Ramsey should get on three-way calls with childcare facilities to find his callers cheaper alternatives,” one person writes.

“Free summer camp?! Where? We even had to pay a few hundred for half-day day camp at the YMCA for my kid,” another commenter questions.

“I’m in Massachusetts and the average around us is $400-500 per kid per week for full time daycare. It’s not affordable,” one mom explains.

@sheisapaigeturner

There is a childcare crisis in our country. The cost of childcare is astronomical. The cost of childcare is typically the biggest financial burden for a family with young children. The cost of childcare is rising at a faster rate than any other expense for families. People like Dave, pretending that this isn’t happening is wild to me because it is documented that this is indeed the cost of daycare. Dave should not be giving advice unless he’s well-versed in the topic. ##daveramsey##childcarecrisis##childcare ##daycare##daycarelife##millennialmom##workingmom

Paige, a mom that lives in Massachusetts took to social media to explain that it did in fact cost $20K-$26K a year in her state to send a child to daycare. In the caption of her video she explains in part, “There is a childcare crisis in our country. The cost of childcare is astronomical. The cost of childcare is typically the biggest financial burden for a family with young children. The cost of childcare is rising at a faster rate than any other expense for families.”

Maybe this is news to Ramsey, but to people raising children outside of rural areas, the cost of the caller’s childcare makes sense. There is a childcare crisis in America and many parents are finding themselves in an insurmountable hardship with seemingly no end in sight.

Video reveals the ‘sneaky’ ways fast food restaurants trick you into spending more money

Even though inflation levels have slowed in the U.S. over the past few months, fast food is one industry where prices keep going up. It seems like there’s nowhere to turn when the places where we used to go to for a deal keep getting pricier and pricier.

According to CBS News, prices at “limited service” restaurants were up 6.2% last year, with America’s most popular fast-food joint, McDonald’s, up 10%.

“Our average pricing level in the U.S. business for the full year will be just over 10%,” Ian Borden, the company’s CFO, stated in an October 2023 earnings call.

If you’re still hoping to find a deal on fast food, Business Insider created a video that shows all the “sneaky” tricks fast-food chains use to get you to spend more than you intended.

Sneaky Ways Fast Food Restaurants Get You To Spend Money

One way they get you to spend more money is by having menus that are a “noisy mess of options and categories” that only highlight a portion of what’s available. Looking for the value menu? That will be pushed to the corner of the menu so your focus stays on the pricier items on its left side.

You’ll also notice that the photos of the items are large, but the price next to them is comparatively small.

“Food pictures, they light up the brain. Particularly when you’re hungry. Large food pictures, for a food company, are key,” Hans Taparia, a professor of business and society at NYU, told Business Insider.

The video also reveals that if you do the math, value meals really aren’t a significant savings.

“If you buy multiple items on the value menu, it won’t necessarily be cheaper than a Happy Meal,” Taparia adds. In the example provided in the video, a McDonald’s Double-Quarter Pounder value meal is only 9 cents cheaper than if you purchased the items separately.

Dying mom creates one last song for her son and it tops the charts

News of the Grammys might be circulating all over the web right now, but that’s not where you’ll hear about this truly inspiring music story.

Thirty-one year old musician and mom Cat Janice had one wish after being diagnosed with cancer: to leave behind a song for her 7-year-old son Loren, so that he could collect the proceeds.

The D.C.-based singer songwriter first noticed a lump in her neck in November of 2021, as she explained on TikTok. Over the next year the lump grew larger, prompting her to visit a doctor who confirmed it was sarcoma.

Janice continued singing and writing songs throughout her chemo treatments and surgery, posting her creations—and her healing progress—on social media.

Despite being declared cancer-free on July 22, 2022, the cancer returned almost a year later. And in January 2024, she posted that her “tumors basically tripled overnight,” leaving her virtually unable to speak, let alone sing, and living in hospice.

@cat.janice #greenscreensticker cannot even believe this happened but I have to keep my head up. I want to leave behind every penny I have for him. Will you please pre save it and stream when it comes out? Hospice has been easier and more time with kiddo but swelling has not stopped 🙁 ❤️❤️ prayers please #cancer #songwriter ♬ Dance You Outta My Head – Cat Janice

Knowing she didn’t have much time left, Jancie teased out one last song, a happy pop tune titled “Dance You Outta My Head,” kindly asking folks to stream it. That way, she could leave her baby boy something when she was gone.

Janice got her wish. “Dance You Outta My Head” blew up on TikTok. People not shared videos of them dancing along to the words, but also offered words of support and empathy.

@kylei.ann I am cryingggg at our spins @Cat Janice ♬ Dance You Outta My Head – Cat Janice

Skier rescues snowboarder buried upside-down in 6 ft of snow, and the GoPro footage is intense

No matter how long you’ve skied or snowboarded or how much of an expert you are, there’s one nemesis on the mountain that poses an underappreciated threat—the tree well.

People may think the main danger of skiing through trees is the risk of running into one. But falling into a tree well is a less obvious, but still potentially deadly risk due to the possibility of snow immersion suffocation (SIS). Essentially, the area around the base of a tree creates snow conditions that are quite different than those out in the open. Air pockets in the snow combined with water vapor rising from the tree base turns the snow into a quicksand-like texture that is nearly impossible to escape from—the more you struggle, the deeper in you fall. Skiers and snowboarders die every year from SIS due to falling into tree wells and not being found in time.

That could easily have been snowboarder Ian Steger’s fate in March 2023 if not for the eagle eye and quick thinking of backcountry skier Francis Zuber.

Zuber had just begun a backcountry ski run with a buddy on Mount Baker in Washington State when a flash of red caught the corner of his eye. Zuber’s GoPro footage shows him stopping and turning to see a colorful snowboard upside-down next to a tree.

“I knew there was somebody attached to it, and obviously they were still alive,” Zuber told Vancouver’s City News. “I shout out to the guy…he can’t hear me, he’s five and a half to six feet into the snow at that point.” Zuber knew he had to work fast.

As the video shows him struggling to make his way back toward the tree through the deep snow, we can hear him muttering expletives to himself and calling out to the snowboarder. At first, we can’t see how Steger is positioned, but as Zuber gets closer and starts digging, it becomes clear that the snowboarder is completely upside-down, with his face buried deep in the snow.

Watch the harrowing GoPro footage Zuber shared on YouTube:

[Warning: This video contains strong language.]

Zuber told the CBC that they estimated Steger had been buried between five and seven minutes, “probably at either a third or just the halfway point of his possible survival time in there,” when he found him. Zuber said Steger hadn’t been snowboarding alone—he was with a group of three other riders who were carrying safety equipment including shovels, beacons and two-way radios—but as we could see in Zuber’s GoPro, getting back up a mountain when you realize someone in your group isn’t behind you anymore is no small or quick task.

Steger and Zuber have since become friends since the March 3 rescue and have even gone skiing together on Mount Baker.

Steger told the CBC he just wants to “enjoy being alive.” Indeed, after a close-call experience like that, every moment you have would feel like a gift.
