Why Did Kanye West Diss Hailey Bieber?

kanye west
Getty Image

Kanye West is at it again. In a new post on Instagram, the mercurial producer went off on a long list of imagined critics, enemies, and rivals in response to his song “Carnvial” reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Among those names were Drake, Adidas, and even Hailey Bieber. While fans probably wouldn’t be surprised by the first two inclusions, that last name might have raised some eyebrows. After all, to the best of our knowledge, Hailey Bieber is not a rapper with whom Yeezy has longstanding, on-and-off-again beef, nor a multi-billion-dollar apparel brand who cut him off after his wild 2023 comments about Jewish people. So what gives? Why did Kanye West diss Hailey Bieber?

Buckle your seatbelts, this is a wild ride.

The origins of Bieber’s inclusion go back a couple of years, to the beginning (ish?) of Kanye’s latest years-long bout of contentious provocation. In a now-deleted post screen-capped by TMZ, Kanye snapped on Bieber, calling her “nose job Hailey Baldloose” (oof, he can’t even spell “lose”) praising model (and rumored ex-girlfriend) Vinetria after she walked in his “White Lives Matter” shirt showcase at Paris Fashion Week in 2022.

After being called out by Vogue‘s first-ever Black Editor Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, Kanye lashed out at her, making fun of her outfits and saying she “is not a fashion person.” Bieber later posted a photo of Karefa-Johnson on her own Instagram praising the editor, writing, “My respect for you runs deep my friend! To know is to adore you and to work with you is an honor. The most kind. the most talented. the most fun. the most chic.” Meanwhile, her fellow model Gigi Hadid went a step further, calling Kanye a bully.

This was apparently enough to land her on West’s shitlist. He posted a screenshot of a Google search depicting several outlets’ headlines describing Bieber as defending Karefa-Johnson, adding the caption, “Wait, am I canceled again? Justin [Bieber, Hailey’s husband] let me know.” He posted another screenshot of a gossip blog post from 2016 about Hailey supposedly going on a date with his perennial nemesis Drake, writing, “Get your girl before I get mad. You spose to be my friend right?” As evidenced by his most recent post (which has since been edited, because of course the man has no courage of conviction), he clearly still harbors ill will toward Bieber.

“F*ck everybody at the fashion houses that sided with Gabby and Hailey Bieber,” he wrote. Naturally, he makes no mention of the fact that he spent several days attacking her online for the offense of simply disagreeing with him, or that his childish provocations were disapproved of by pretty much any human being with a working brain that isn’t a virulent bigot. So, yeah, in conclusion… Please kick Kanye off social media again. He ain’t learned his lesson and he probably never will.

Ice Spice Fiercely Clapped Back After A Fan Expressed Their Disapproval Of Her 2024 Oscars After-Party Dress

Ice Spice 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
Getty Image

Actors Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Robert Downey Jr., and Ryan Gosling (aka our forever Ken) were the breakout stars of the 2024 Oscars.

However, Ice Spice was the talk of the official after-party presented by Vanity Fair. The “Think U The Sh*t (Fart)” rapper’s barely there black sheer lace dress left little to the imagination. Ice Spice’s garment was only rivaled by John Cena’s naked onstage cameo during the ceremony.

After photos from the party began circulating online, users weighed in on Ice Spice’s look. One user expressed disapproval, writing, “I wish her stylist would try harder… same lace bodysuit back to back.” The jab at the musician’s stylist, Timothy Luke Garcia, didn’t sit well with Ice Spice, so she fiercely clapped back, responding directly to the user.

“Let’s see u b*tches in custom Dolce,” she wrote.

This isn’t the first time users have taken issue with Ice Spice’s wardrobe choices. Back on Halloween 2023, her Betty Boop costume caused a stir. However, she isn’t apologizing for her sexy looks. She doubled down on her fiery response to the fan’s remarks on her Oscar look with a sprinkle of sarcasm. “Sorry for being a meanie,” she wrote. “I was only tryna hurt your feelings because you hurt mine :’P.”

Donald Trump Gave Himself A ‘Ridiculous’ New Nickname That’s Also Extremely Inaccurate

donald trump
Getty Image

The very stable genius has given himself another nickname.

In a late-night post on Truth Social, Donald Trump played all the greatest hits, including ranting about Joe Biden and using more exclamation points than any 77-year-old should. (Maybe he got all riled up by Jimmy Kimmel?)

“Dean Phillips, who just ‘quit’ in his hapless campaign against Crooked Joe Biden, was not very good at his craft, politics. In fact, I would say that he was far worse than the Republican challengers to me, with a few exceptions. I’ll give you those names if you like, but I’d rather get down to the serious business of defeating the worst President in the history of the United States, by far, Crooked Joe Biden!!!” the former president wrote.

Trump saved the best for last, however.

“For the good of our now failing Nation, and in order to inform the American people of what is going on in our Country, we must immediately have a full scale debate between Crooked Joe and Honest Don. I’m ready to go, ANY TIME, ANY PLACE!”

According to Mediaite, this is the first time that Trump has referred to himself as “Honest Don,” despite over 3,000 fact checks to the contrary. It’s not his best work, but they can’t all be as inspired as Lyin’ Ted.

All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Best New Indie
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Wild Pink, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, DIIV, and more.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

Kim Gordon – The Collective

On Sonic Youth’s “Kool Thing,” bassist-vocalist Kim Gordon and Public Enemy’s Chuck D traded words in the song’s breakdown; it signified a collision of two of the most influential voices in alt-rock and hip-hop, respectively. Now, Gordon is making bona fide trap bangers designed to shatter your soundsystem, thanks to producer Justin Raisen’s booming 808s and Gordon’s brash, distorted guitar noise. The Collective, her sophomore solo album, is as vital as any of Gordon’s work in Sonic Youth. At 70, she’s making music far more daring and cutting-edge than some people less than half her age. It would be easy for a legacy artist to fade into the background and rest on their laurels, but an artist as brilliant as Gordon could never fade.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “Wild God”

This August, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will return with their first new studio album since 2019’s Ghosteen. Wild God, if its title track and lead single are anything to go by, is the loosest Cave has sounded in a while. From its frenetic groove to Cave’s spirited performance (including a nod to “Jubilee Street”), “Wild God” is a genuinely fun time. As Cave himself puts it in a press release, “there’s no f*cking around with this record.” “Wild God” confirms that all on its own.

Wild Pink – “Air Drumming Fix You”

John Ross’ music is as vast as the sprawling vistas of the heartland. As Wild Pink, Ross has created highly affecting and poignantly sincere records like 2021’s glossy A Billion Little Lights and 2022’s colossal double LP ILYSM. Freshly signed to Fire Talk, Ross is back with a new Wild Pink tune. “Air Drumming Fix You,” with rich saxophone riffs and misty, ping-ponging synthesizers, is another excellent song from one of indie rock’s best contemporary songwriters.

Jlin – “Auset”

The Indiana-based synth savant Jlin is about to release her new album, Akoma, later this month. “Auset,” the latest single, is another showcase of Jlin at her best. Glitchy, side-stepping drum machines pair with futuristic synth arpeggios that fade in and out of earshot. Her labyrinthine compositions are fit for a sweaty dance floor and meditative introspection in equal measure.

This Is Lorelei – “Dancing In The Club”

Whether he’s making music as one half of Water From Your Eyes or My Idea, Nate Amos adds an experimental, glitchy edge to his work. This Is Lorelei, his solo project, is another outgrowth of the prolific New York artist. Amos is so prolific, in fact, that he simply started giving his EPs pithy titles like EP #32 and EP #33. Surprisingly, Box For Study, Box For Star is his first full-length album under the moniker. Before its release this June, he has shared “Dancing In The Club,” a wildly infectious synth-pop tune with Amos’ heavily Auto-Tuned vocals, swelling strings, and a digitized harp hook.

Dehd – “Light On”

In just a couple of months, the Chicago indie-rock trio will release their new album, Poetry, the follow-up to 2022’s Blue Skies. “Light On,” Dehd’s latest preview of the forthcoming record, is a pleasant tune about reassurance and showing up for someone. Backed by drummer Eric McGrady’s jaunty shuffle and Emily Kempf’s sauntering bassline, guitarist and co-vocalist Jason Balla offers a heartwarming reminder: “Every day, every night, I will leave the light on.”

American Culture – “Let It Go”

American Culture’s latest song captures the contradictions and duality of human nature. “Let It Go” is about searching for a lost loved one and being that lost loved one. It explores the intersection of anguish and hope: the arduous search for a close friend and the warm relief of reuniting with them. Co-vocalists and guitarists Chris Adolf and Michael Stein trudge through heavy, autobiographical subject matter with a relentless, DIY punk spirit. “Let It Go” details Stein’s experiences of getting robbed, becoming addicted to heroin, and being houseless in the tunnels underneath Las Vegas. At the same time, it documents Adolf’s search for Stein, who was a missing person for three months. Alongside Midwife’s Madeline Johnston, the Denver punks light a path forward on their groovy, uplifting new single.

DIIV – “Soul-net”

Just a few weeks after sharing “Brown Paper Bag,” the lead single for DIIV’s fourth album, Frog In Boiling Water, the Brooklyn shoegazers are back with “Soul-net.” It’s a foreboding, slow-paced meditation, and Zachary Cole Smith’s gauzy vocals eventually give way to a synth melody in the first chorus. But it’s still got the reverb-heavy, distorted guitars that we’ve come to love this band for.

King Hannah – “Big Swimmer”

During the first few moments of “Big Swimmer,” the title track from King Hannah’s upcoming sophomore record, Hannah Merrick’s words come lapping in like the gentle, calming rush of water she sings of: “When the river is floating / And the mouth has come to its end / Do you carry on swimming / Or do you jump out and grab your towel?” The Liverpool duo comprising Merrick and guitarist Craig Whittle, following up on their marvelous 2022 debut album, opt for the former. “Big Swimmer,” including guest vocals from indie darling Sharon Van Etten, expands upon the group’s bluesy post-punk with masterful precision. As swaying acoustic guitars and Merrick’s Joni Mitchell-esque vocals fade, there’s a brief pause before Whittle’s electric guitar edges over the horizon like a rising sun. King Hannah, on their latest song, carry on swimming.

Eric Slick – “Anxious To Please”

New Age Rage, the forthcoming third solo album from Dr. Dog drummer Eric Slick, is an unflinchingly silly affair. Take its title, its technicolor, psychedelic imagery, or its deeply unserious ’80s arena-rock pastiche. As a drummer who has worked with everyone from Kevin Morby to (unknowingly) Taylor Swift, Slick has become accustomed to the supporting role. But, as a songwriter and producer, his own voice comes into being. “Anxious To Please,” Slick’s new single, reckons with the self-doubt that comes from always playing the sideman. “Trying hard not to be somebody else,” he sings over kitschy synths and gated drums. With “Anxious To Please,” Slick is wholly himself.

Barry Keoghan Jokingly Reacted To Sabrina Carpenter Trying To ‘Leave With’ Fellow Irishman Cillian Murphy After The Oscars

Barry Keoghan
Getty Image

It’s great to be Irish these days! Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win an Oscar, St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend and the Royal Family is engulfed in controversy. The Irish sure are lucky! Thanks, Ayo.

Nobody is immune to the lure of the Irish, including singer/actress Sabrina Carpenter, the rumored girlfriend of another Irish Prince, Barry Keoghan.

Carpenter joked to Vanity Fair that she was on the lookout for Murphy at an Oscar’s afterparty. “If I see Cillian Murphy, I’m probably gonna leave the party. Probably just gonna leave with him,” she said, clarifying, “I’m not gonna leave with him. I’m just gonna leave at the same time as him so I can see where he lives. So I can, like, follow his car,” Carpenter joked.

Keoghan seemed to appreciate the love for his fellow Irishman, as the actor commented with a four-leaf clover emoji and a hand-raised emoji. “🙋🏻☘”. This is love in the year 2024! A hundred years from now, the world’s most renowned archeologists will struggle to understand the complexity and context of these two emojis. Assuming smart phones still exist.

Luckily for Keoghan (and Murphy for that matter), Carpenter left with the Saltburn actor while wearing his jacket, so she must not have found Murphy after all.

Meanwhile, the delightful children of Ireland are celebrating Murphy’s Oscar win. Hopefully, they will wait a few dozen years to see Saltburn.

Sharon Stone Named The Producer Who Told Her To Have Sex With A Baldwin Brother So His Performance ‘Would Get Better’

sharon stone
Paramount Pictures

Sharon Stone revealed in her memoir that a Hollywood producer pressured her into having sex with a male co-star. “[I] had a producer bring me to his office, where he had malted milk balls in a little milk-carton-type container under his arm with the spout open,” the actress wrote in 2021’s The Beauty of Living Twice. “He walked back and forth in his office with the balls falling out of the spout and rolling all over the wood floor as he explained to me why I should f*ck my co-star so that we could have on-screen chemistry.”

Stone didn’t reveal the identity of anyone involved then, but she has now. The producer was Robert Evans, the actor was Billy Baldwin, and the movie was 1993’s Sliver, her follow-up film to Basic Instinct.

“They expected me to bring home another giant smash hit and they gave me casting approval and they gave me all these approvals, but then when it came time for me to do it they told me it was a vanity deal and I couldn’t have my approvals,” she said on The Louis Theroux Podcast podcast, according to the Daily Mail. “Then they started to try to blame me for their mistakes, and they made terrible mistakes in the way that they hired directors and cast.”

One day, Evans (who also produced The Godfather, Rosemary’s Baby, and Chinatown, three slightly more memorable movies) called Stone into his office and explained to her that “he slept with Ava Gardner and I should sleep with Billy Baldwin, because if I slept with Billy Baldwin, Billy Baldwin’s performance would get better,” she said. “And we needed Billy to get better in the movie because that was the problem. And if I could sleep with Billy then we’d have chemistry on screen, and if I would just have sex with him then that would save the movie, and the real problem with the movie was me because I was so uptight, and so not like a real actress who could just f*ck him and get things back on track. The real problem was I was such a tight arse.”

Stone added, “Now all of a sudden, I’m in the “I have to f*ck people” business.”

Who Is On Trial For Pop Smoke’s Murder?

pop-smoke-getty-full.jpg
Getty Image

It has been over four full years since the death of Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke, who helped popularize the New York drill movement and was the scene’s most well-known face and voice before his murder in 2020. This year, one of the three people accused of shooting and killing the rapper during a home invasion will go on trial; the other two, an 18 year old and a 19 year old, pled guilty in juvenile court last year.

Which leaves Corey Walker, the only defendant to be tried as an adult, who pled not guilty to murder and three other charges stemming from the home invasion. According to Rolling Stone, his trial has been set for July 25 in Los Angeles. His defense lawyer Christopher Darden — who has since been replaced — argued that Walker was not party to the the actual murder, saying he “remained outside seated in the driver’s seat” of his car, which he shared with his grandmother. However, prosecutors say Walker that while he may not have “planned” the crime as his attorney insists, he did “facilitate” it by providing weapons, casing the scene, and serving as getaway driver.

They say Walker remained in contact with the juveniles via cell phone during the robbery and that he researched the targeted item, a Rolex watch the trio later sold for just $2,000. Darden’s failed 2021 motion to dismiss the charges against Walker told his accomplices to defend themselves with a flower vase before resorting to gunplay.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

best new pop ariana grande bleachers laufey
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

This week saw the release of a ton of great new pop music. Ariana Grande made her grand return to music with a brand new album, causing the internet to play the songs on repeat and dissect all the telling lyrics. Bleachers‘ self-titled fourth album also came out, which has both danceable tunes and tracks that could soundtrack a late-night car ride.

Check out the rest of Uproxx’s Best New Pop Music roundup below.

Ariana Grande — “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)”

Ariana Grande waited a few years before putting out a new record with Eternal Sunshine, but the time she’s taken to herself has paid off. If the lead preview “Yes, And?” represented Grande’s carefree attitude over gossip, the follow-up single “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)” is still poppy, but provides more insight into the star’s emotional state during her divorce. As the album was inspired by the movie of the same title, Grande pulled visual inspiration for her latest music video also. In it, she has her memories of the relationship erased, while painfully watching them replay, then fade from view.

Bleachers — “Jesus Is Dead”

“Jesus is dead, and so’s New York,” Bleachers’ lead singer Jack Antonoff declares on one of the highlight songs from the band’s new self-titled album. Throughout the track, he mourns the loss of a particular era of the city. The bands and labels and the music scene he once was familiar with are long gone, leaving him missing it and hoping for a return. It also ends with another killer sax solo, giving the rest of the band time to shine throughout the record.

Laufey — “Goddess”

Laufey’s “Goddess” is the focus track from her forthcoming Bewitched: The Goddess Edition deluxe album — and for good reason. It is probably one of her most powerful songs across her discography so far, as she rejects the notion of being placed on a pedestal. The rising star and Grammy Best New Artist nominee described it as her “most honest” piece of work which she wrote alone at a piano.

“Someone had fallen in love with the version of me they’d seen on stage, just to find that I wasn’t what they projected once I was off stage,” Laufey described in a statement. “They deemed me to no longer be a shiny thing when the glamour wore off, reduced to skin and bone.”

Girl In Red — “Doing It Again Baby”

Girl In Red is just a few weeks out from dropping her new album I’m Doing It Again Baby. Now, she has treated fans to the title track. “I tried to force myself to write some sappy-try-hard meaningful lyrics when really all this song was supposed to be, was the soundtrack of feeling absolutely on the top of the world,” she shared about the process behind creating it.

FLO — “Walk Like This”

After FLO had an incredible 2023, they are turning up the heat even higher for the new year. As the girl group’s first new song in 2024, “Walk Like This” is a fiery and confident anthem that finds the band shouting out their men. They are also slated to perform at Coachella and NYC’s Governors Ball pretty soon, so fans will get an opportunity to hopefully sing along to the catchy jam.

Matt Champion, Jennie — “Slow Motion”

Ahead of Matt Champion’s upcoming debut solo album, he released a new collaboration with Blackpink’s Jennie called “Slow Motion.” The track starts off as a gentle ballad, with Jennie’s voice being the first introduction to pull listeners into their world. Once they’re comfortable there, Champion starts to appear in the background, then as a duet — all while the instrumental shifts to a heightened electronic beat.

Luke Hemmings — “Shakes”

Luke Hemmings from 5 Seconds Of Summer is stepping out for some more solo music. “Shakes” prefaces his upcoming album, Boy, which is set to drop in late April. “It initially started in New York as one of the earliest songs that was written for this,” he told Rolling Stone about more of the backstory and the song’s creation process. “I was experimenting with writing from other people’s perspectives and observing. Almost in a Lost In Translation way, where you’re observing the world and real life seems a bit intense. That’s where the chorus came from.”

Conan Gray — “Alley Rose”

Previous Uproxx cover star Conan Gray is carrying himself through the heartbreak and range of emotions on “Alley Rose.” Written about the downfall of his own relationship, Gray puts his entire heart on full display. “But I swore hands were made for fighting / I swore eyes were made to cry / But you’re the first person that I’ve seen / Who’s proven that might be a lie,” he sings, struggling through the pain and betrayal.

D4vd — “My House Is Not A Home”

D4vd’s “My House Is Not A Home” paints a vivid picture of the pain and heartbreak he’s felt when it comes to feeling distant from his family. He was also struggling after moving to Los Angeles, feeling lonely, and falling in love with people he probably shouldn’t have. He comes to his senses by the song’s closing lines, “The house we called our home has fallin’ to pieces on its own / I know that you’re better off alone / Babe, I could fix you but I won’t.”

Maggie Lindemann — “One Last Time”

Maggie Lindemann recently dropped her new EP, Headsplit, where she dives into all the darker aspects of relationships. On “One Last Time,” she admits she’s “losing track of who I once was” and seems to be admitting that it’s better to let go and say goodbyes than be unsure of her identity.

The Early Reactions To ‘Monkey Man’ Are Blown Away By Dev Patel’s Directorial Debut: ‘Intense As F**k’

Monkey Man
Universal

Monkey Man just pounded a whole bunch of awesome into the face of SXSW attendees. Following a special screening of the film, Dev Patel was greeted with a standing ovation that had the budding action stars wiping away tears after pouring everything he’s got into his directorial debut.

Monkey Man is a passion project for Patel who wrote, directed, and starred in the actioner that is already getting rave reviews coming out of Austin. There’s a reason Jordan Peele scooped up the film and made sure it got the theatrical release it deserves.

“MONKEY MAN is brutally violent, against the villains, but also against the hypocrisy of religion, the tyranny of caste, and the oppression of a corrupt government,” Josh Hurtado tweeted. “Dev Patel nailed it, bloody as hell and intense as f*ck.”

“MONKEY MAN was clearly burning a hole in Dev Patel, and I’m so glad he got it out,” Drew McWeeney wrote.

“Holy sh*t, I never thought I’d see an action sequence set to a Bloodywood song???” Matt Donato tweeted. “Dev Patel comes out swinging, stabbing, and pulverizing in his hard-hitting debut. Dev’s adoration of action cinema shines as clear influences meld with his fiery storytelling.”

“The only thing blocking Dev Patel from being the next James Bond is that he’s such a good director,” Whitlock and Pope wrote. “I just don’t think he’d want to step back from that. But the Broccolis would be nervous about how much power they’d cede by making him writer/director AND star.”

You can see more reactions below:

Here’s the official synopsis:

After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Monkey Man hits theaters on April 5.
