Adrianne Lenker Surprise-Releases A New Six-Song Project To Benefit Palestinian Children

Today (March 11) brings a pleasant surprise for Adrianne Lenker fans, as the Big Thief leader just released I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand, a new six-track solo project, on Bandcamp. Proceeds will benefit the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

In her Instagram post announcing the collection, Lenker explains:

“Everything I think to say feels like it is less than a micro-fraction of the power that is needed to convey the message. I can’t express how sad and angry I am about this ongoing violence towards Palestinians. The killing must stop. The need for a ceasefire is beyond urgent. Permanent Ceasefire Now!

Today I’m releasing a new collection of songs I cherish, which were recorded in the moments they were written. You can purchase this record on Bandcamp, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.”

This comes after Big Thief had an Israel-related controversy in 2022, when they announced (and later canceled) concerts in the country, which is where band member Max Oleartchik is from. Lenker addressed that situation in a new New York Times profile published today: As Stereogum notes, Lenker acknowledged it was “naïve and not thought out” to announce concerts in Israel and expect to not face criticism.

Listen to I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand here.

Adrianne Lenker’s I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand Tracklist

1. “The Music”
2. “Feel It All”
3. “Fangs Lungs Ankles”
4. “I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand”
5. “Relief”
6. “Someone To”

What To Expect At The Texas Eclipse Festival — A Conversation With Founder Mitch Morales

texas eclipse
TEXAS ECLIPSE/MERLE COOPER/UPROXX

Mitch Morales has never seen a total solar eclipse. But that hasn’t stopped him from planning one of the world’s most anticipated parties of the year to spot one — the Texas Eclipse Festival.

“I remember I was sitting at the computer and I looked up when the next total solar eclipse would be, not knowing that it was going to be in Texas,” Morales told Uproxx. “The last time there was a total solar eclipse in central Texas was in the 1300s.”

As if witnessing a solar eclipse wasn’t exciting enough, Morales has layered on a once-in-a-lifetime experience — where creativity, music, art, space, and technology converge in one massive celebration. His Texas Eclipse Festival is slated for April 5th-9th, just 45 minutes North of Austin, Texas.

With 40,000 attendees expected, Reveille Peak Ranch will turn into a mini city for five days as it welcomes in a highly curated crew featuring visionary pioneers, leading space and technology experts, science and wellness thought leaders, renowned visual and interactive artists, and of course, global music icons. Serving as a global community hub, the event will feature over 300 programs spanning captivating experiential art installations, mesmerizing music performances, space exploration, cutting-edge technology, futurism workshops with pioneers in web3 and AI, and more.

“It’s probably one of the most memorable things that you’ll ever experience, this natural phenomena….I wanted to make sure that the location was perfect for this type of event,” Morales said. “[Reveille Peak Ranch] is an incredible property. It spans over 1,300 acres, 60 miles of hiking trails, and elevated hilltops for optimal viewing of the eclipse. The local community is super supportive and the owner is amazing. The property is right on the center line, within the overall path of totality. If you’re going to have the most magical moment in your life, would you rather watch it for a minute or would you rather extend it for as long as possible to over four minutes?”

Texas Eclipse
TEXAS ECLIPSE

Spanning seven music environments – SKY, EARTH, MOON, SUN, LONE STAR, ECLIPSE, and ETHER – Texas Eclipse will be soundtracked by an eclectic mix of the world’s most prominent artists, including Barclay Crenshaw, Big Gigantic, Bob Moses, CloZee, The String Cheese Incident, All:Lo Collective (Park Breezy, Pheel, Tf Marz, Thought Process), Treavor Moontribe, Lee Burridge, Subtronics, Tipper, Tycho, Vulfpeck, Desert Hearts, LP Giobbi, Tiga, Desert Dwellers, Mark Farina, Vincent Antone, Hamdi, Ivy Lab, Of The Trees, Zeds Dead, and many more. The stages are designed and built by the festival’s network of global partners: Symbiosis (repping California), Re:birth (Japan), Strawberry Fields (Australia), Earth Frequency (Australia), Bachstelzen (Germany), Beloved (Oregon), Origin (South Africa), Meadows in the Mountains (Bulgaria), Bass Coast (Canada), Ometeotl (Mexico), DisQo PereZoso (Costa Rica), and Cosmic Convergence (Guatemala).

On the space and technology side of things, Texas Eclipse will host 11 astronauts to talk about the wonders of space and the achievements of human exploration, representing every flight provider –NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and Space Perspective. They’ll be joined by Dr. Peter Diamandis, Dr. Bruce Damer, Cosmic Perspective, and more.

TEXAS ECLIPSE
TEXAS ECLIPSE

Texas Eclipse will also explore the depths of human consciousness with an impressive lineup of thought leaders and visionaries. The festival will celebrate the 38th anniversary of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) with a collaborative and immersive educational experience. Additionally, mycology expert Paul Staments, integrative medicine leader Andrew Weil, environmentalist Adrian Grenier, and more will host curated workshops and panels onsite.

Concluding with yoga, movement, and immersive visual programming, the festival has enlisted the likes of transformative artist Amanda Sage, renowned visual artists Alex and Allyson Grey, futuristic creator Android Jones, immersive art collective Meow Wolf, visionary artist and storyteller Hannah Muse, breathwork specialist Michael Brian Baker, and more.

We had the opportunity to talk with the man behind Texas Eclipse’s cosmic vision on his inspiration and ethos behind the event. Read the full conversation below.

TEXAS ECLIPSE
TEXAS ECLIPSE

What is your recipe for creating an incredible festival centered around a celestial event?

There’s been a long history of these gatherings. They’ve been happening all over the world, specifically because they are so rare. Every couple of years you’ve got this occurring on a different continent so there’s this community that’s built up. That’s been probably one of the cooler parts is trying to continue on that tradition and tapping into those networks. That’s why we have our ‘global collaborators’ to cultivate a global curation of this event.

Can you speak on your own individual inspiration and ethos behind Texas Eclipse?

It’s so weird that we haven’t been to the moon or we haven’t landed and stepped foot on the moon since the ‘70s. You look back at the ‘60s and ‘70s and the geopolitical climate and what’s happening in our country, and there’s a lot of similarities between then and now. It feels like this spirit of exploration and expansion of possibilities into a new age for all of us. A new age of opportunity and excitement and working together.

This is very much about celebrating where we’ve come from and bringing a bunch of people together in this current moment, even if it’s only for four minutes. It’s about sharing a collective human experience together within the cosmos. We’ll all looking up to the stars and these celestial bodies together, evoking the idea of, “Where are we going?”

TEXAS ECLIPSE
TEXAS ECLIPSE

So… where are we going?

We are going to space, we are going to the moon and Mars, and furthermore, we’re going into these digital worlds that we’ve built ourselves. And so it’s going to be an incredibly interesting and dynamic time over the next couple of decades. It’s my belief that if we’re going to succeed and overcome these huge challenges that we are going to face as a civilization then we have to figure out a way to work together more and not be so divided. The idea of bringing these people together to celebrate all of this and the amazing things that we’ve been able to build is, I hope, an inflection point for more of that same thing.

What will the eclipse experience be like for attendees?

The sky starts getting dark around noon when just barely the moon goes in front of the sun until first contact. Fourth contact is where it fully departs, around 3 pm. The entire totality experience is about three hours long. Since there’s so much diverse programming happening throughout the weekend, we’re really trying to reserve the space for people to just appreciate it the eclipse. We want to make sure that people have outlets for the energy and the observation process that they’re going to be within. There will be a big group meditation and an indigenous elder from the area to hold and call upon ancient wisdom and traditions during the eclipse.

TEXAS ECLIPSE
TEXAS ECLIPSE

The programming for Texas Eclipse is unlike anything the world has ever seen. What are some of your favorite highlights that attendees shouldn’t miss?

We’re programming an extremely diverse music lineup spanning rock, jam, electronic, spiritual folk, world, and more. What I’m most excited about is the space programming. I think we’re putting together one of the most diverse lineup of speakers that any event has seen, especially outside of a space conference. We’ll have 11 astronauts who have been to space, with the majority of our space program being female-owned.

We’ll have representatives from NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin, Virgin Galactic, and Space Perspective to hold educational workshops. I’m excited to get a glimpse and learn from them on what is going to happen over the next couple of decades and the timeline for us being a multi-planetary species. It’ll be pretty cool to see people walking around in spacesuit costumes and then people walking around in actual space suits that they’ve worn to space.

Don’t just go for the music. Go to learn, to explore, to be a human, and connect with other humans.

A limited amount of ticket packages are still on sale for Texas Eclipse, including general admission, VIP, glamping, and hotel packages. For tickets and additional information, visit the Texas Eclipse website.

How Ryan Gosling won the Oscars without actually winning an Oscar

At the 2024 Academy Awards show, Ryan Gosling managed a pretty incredible feat—winning the entire Oscars without taking home a single award with his performance of “I’m Just Ken.”

Throughout the show, the songs that were nominated for Best Original Song were performed, with two songs from “Barbie” bookending the night. Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas performed first, making everyone cry with the hauntingly gorgeous “What Was I Made For.” But it was Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” spectacle that had everyone laughing, singing along and wondering how on Earth we got to this iconic cultural moment.

Let’s face it—the entire idea of Ryan Gosling playing a classic Ken doll in a movie about Barbie sounded pretty goofy from the start. And yet the combined genius of the movie’s creators and Gosling’s abject refusal to phone in anything not only made it work, but earned the actor widespread praise and a nomination from the Academy for Best Supporting Actor. Throw in some cheesy-on-purpose songwriting and an over-the-top embrace of its own absurdity, and we get one of the greatest Oscar moments ever.

First of all, if you missed it (or just want to witness it again), here’s Gosling’s performance in all its sparkling pink glory:

Naturally, the standing ovation performance got people asking questions about “the man behind the tan,” and we’ve got answers:

Q: Who was the woman Ryan Gosling was sitting with, the one he put the cowboy hat on?

Gosling is married to actor Eva Mendes, but that woman sitting next to him definitely wasn’t her. It was actually Gosling’s sister, Mandi Gosling. Gosling and Mendes keep their relationship much more private than most celebrities and rarely make appearances together, even at major events like the Academy Awards. Gosling often brings his sister, with whom he has a close relationship, to accompany him on the red carpet.

(Mendes was there to support Gosling, however. She posted an Instagram standing outside his dressing room with the caption, “Always by my man.” But she wasn’t dressed in a designer gown and didn’t sit on the main floor with the other Hollywood stars. For some, their arrangement might seem strange, but it seems to work for them.)

Q: What’s the necklace that Gosling kissed during a camera close-up?

A: All signs point to the necklace he kissed being an “E” for his wife, Eva. (See? all good.) He wore a necklace that looked like the Barbie “B” but with an “E” instead at the “Barbie” movie premiere. A sweet little shout-out to his wife of 13 years and their two kids during the performance.

Q: Why did the staging of “I’m Just Ken” look familiar?

A: The pink sparkly suit, pink gloves and tuxedoed backup dancers wasn’t just a “Barbie” thing. The whole performance was an homage to Marilyn Monroe’s performance of “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” We could talk about the metaness of this staging choice for days, but suffice it to say it worked.

Q: Was Ryan Gosling really singing or did he lip sync?

A: Oh, that was all him. You can tell by the minor imperfections here and there, which simply made it real and didn’t take away from the impressiveness of it all. Gosling’s easy charm, charisma and comfort on stage are really something to witness, and frankly he put on a better performance than a lot of actual singers do when they perform live.

Q: Has Ryan Gosling always been this engaging as a stage performer?

A: Well, yeah, pretty much. The Canadian actor got his start young, being recruited by Disney as a Mouseketeer all the way back in 1993. Enjoy this little historical tidbit of adorable little Ryan Gosling from the CBC:

Some people are born with the gift to entertain, and that certainly seems to be the case with Ryan Gosling. Not to take anything away from his hard work, of course, but it’s the dedication to craft combined with that all-elusive X factor that makes a genuine superstar, and Gosling just keep on proving that he’s got it all.

A mom mentioned she played the fiddle so the bar band handed her one. She totally shredded.

The devil may have gone down to Georgia, but it appears he took a detour to a bar in Nashville and possessed a middle-aged mom on his way down there.

In a TikTok video that’s been viewed 5.5 million times, Olivia Reeth’s daughter shared that her family had gone to the Whiskey Bent Saloon in Nashville and was watching the Moonshine Outlaw Band perform. Her mom told the band she played the fiddle, and mid-song, the fiddle player decided to hand his instrument over to her.

You kind of have to wonder what the guy was thinking. Did he imagine she’d be able to keep up with the band? Did he figure she’d play a few bars and then hand it back?

Whatever he was picturing, it almost certainly wasn’t what she ended up laying down.

Mom might as well have said, “I’ll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, dude” because she came prepared. In hindsight, her whipping off of her scarf was the sign it was all over, but who’d have known?

Watch her shred that man’s fiddle and see how he reacts:

@skootbutt123

#nashville #whiskeybentsaloon #fiddle

The best part is when the guy pretends to boot the band’s fiddler out of the bar. And then Mama got sassy with it! Absolute legend, making her skills appear effortless as she walked around the room. Didn’t even take her coat off. Looking like she walked in off the street, which she basically did.

The woman’s daughter shared that her mom is classically trained and that her dad was the one who introduced her to country and bluegrass music. They both play in two bands, Coconut Radio Band and Barney’s Bullet.

Seriously impressive talent. And you gotta love the respect the band’s fiddle player gave her, despite her basically stealing his soul. What a fun exchange between musicians who clearly love what they do and love to share it with others.

A-ha’s stripped-down, slowed-down performance of ‘Take On Me’ is a must-see

According to NPR—and the ABBA blaring from my young adult daughter’s headphones—we’re in the midst of an 80s music revival. As a Gen Xer who came of age in the 80s, I think most of that decade should stay locked in a time capsule, but there are a few songs that have managed to remain timeless despite the synthesizers and bad hair.

A-ha’s “Take On Me” is one of them. Despite its consummately-80s sound, the song with the famous sketch animated video is still enjoyable (if not a little earwormy—good luck once it gets stuck in your head).

But a lesser-known 2017 arrangement of the song is actually, miraculusly, even better. A-ha performed “Take On Me” for an MTV Unplugged Summer Solstice album, and it’s significantly different than the original. The Norwegian band filmed the performance live on the island of Giske, dropping the electric piano as well as the tempo for a stripped-down version that has become a fan favorite. As of this writing, the video has 97 million views on YouTube.

“Take On Me” is one of 17 songs in the unplugged performance, but naturally the most popular.

“We’ve talked about this idea for so many years,” guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy said. “And in many of our concerts we’ve also played some acoustic songs. But if you consider that we don’t use much technology at all when we write the songs, the idea of an entirely acoustic show makes total sense. Playing all these songs now in their acoustic versions is like returning to their origins.”

Watch and see how the slower tempo and simple instrumentation creates a sadder, more haunting version of their biggest hit.

“The fact he’s still got such a good voice after decades is incredible,” wrote one fan.

This is music at its purest form. No light show, distortion pedals, autotune and massive audiences. Spotless,” wrote another.

“By far the best version of this song that I have ever heard. It totally transforms the song when performed like this,” shared another.

Another commenter made a poignant observation:

“The original version is like a soundtrack for a man living in the fast-paced life in the 80’s all cool and hip. This one is like when the same man grows old and saying farewell to the fun memories of his youth.”

And another summed up what most people feel seeing this:

“One version makes you dance and the other version makes you cry.”

Dad challenges his Gen Z daughter to figure out 3 things about a U-haul truck

David C. Smalley, a comedian and podcaster, regularly gives us some generational humor by exposing his 19-year-old daughter Talissa to relics of the past. You know, things like CDs, phonebooks, remote controllers…feeling old yet?

Recently, Smalley challenged Talissa with navigating a standard U-Haul storage truck. She had to 1) unlock the door 2) roll down a window and 3) start the engine.

For those of us who grew up before the 90s, this might sound like the easiest challenge ever. But apparently, for Gen Z, it’s like being asked to maneuver a horse and buggy.

Despite growing up in a key fob generation, where simply pressing a button on a tiny remote controller could magically open doors, Talissa aced unlocking the door with a key.

Next, she was understandably baffled over the amount of physical labor required to simply roll down a window.

“Are you serious? They haven’t updated that?!” she exclaimed while doing the tedious hand-cranking move we all know so well. “Are you kidding me?! I would not do this every time.”

She definitely had a point on this one. Electronic windows have been the standard for decades. Is U-Haul just sentimental or what?

Having checked off two of the three tasks, Talissa then had to start the car—which proved to be the biggest challenge of all.

Looking on the center console, where she’s used to seeing the ignition button, Talissa found the airbag and radio (two foreign objects in their own right) but no way to start the car.

Finally…success! Talissa found the ignition hiding behind the steering wheel.

“I’m not going to make it explode, am I?” she joked as she turned the key and celebrated her victory.

Watch below. Hearing Talissa ask if the radio is a “fidget game” is entertainment in itself.

It’s always fun to see the ways in which different generations navigate the world through fashion, slang, entertainment, dating, food, the list goes on. But technology, which continues to evolve at a rapid rate, always feels like the biggest culture shock.

And unlike bell bottoms, outdated tech rarely makes a comeback. So once the more energy efficient, more convenient appliance becomes mainstream, its predecessor is forever obsolete. Unless of course you count the cool, hipster folks hanging onto vinyl for the superior sound quality.

Speaking of vinyl, Talissa was also previously challenged by Smalley to work a record player, to equal hilarity:

@davidcsmalley #daughterissues #daughterpod #genz #genx #recordplayers #vinyl #talissa ♬ original sound – David C. Smalley

Somehow, seeing how far we’ve come through the look of bafflement from the young ones is the only thing that never gets old.

Enjoy more fun interactions from Smalley and Talissa on TikTok.

Saquon Barkley Is Signing A Three-Year Deal With The Eagles

saquon barkley

The running back position has been considerably devalued by NFL teams over the last decade-plus, to the point that it’s exceedingly rare for a back to become a top pick or get a highly lucrative free agency contract. Saquon Barkley, who the Giants took at No. 2 overall in 2018, is looking to accomplish both of those feats as he finally got a chance to enter free agency this year after spending last season on the franchise tag in New York.

Barkley was able to put together a second straight season where he stayed mostly healthy, an important thing for the star back to show other teams after spending much of the 2020 and 2021 seasons on the shelf. Facing loaded boxes a year ago, Barkley still rolled up 962 yards on 247 carries (3.9 ypc) and six touchdowns, a dip from his production in 2022 but understandable given the Giants dreadful quarterback situation, particularly after Daniel Jones went down with injury.

As for what teams would be interested in Barkley, he didn’t have to look far from his current home in New York, as their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles swooped in to land the star back. According to Adam Schefter, the deal guarantees Barkley $26 million and has an average annual value of just over $12 million for three years (with some escalators and bonus clauses).

Barkley, for his part, seems excited to be joining a contender in Philly.

The Eagles saw their top back from last year leave earlier in the day, with the Bears signing D’Andre Swift, but replace him with Barkley to bring even more dynamism to their backfield. Barkley and quarterback Jalen Hurts will give opposing defenses headaches with their ability to run downhill and the Eagles option game figures to be a nightmare to deal with. Barkley, when healthy, is also a terrific screen back and the Eagles are big fans of throwing screens (to the frustration of their fans at times), so his fit certainly seems snug in Philly.

Kirk Cousins Will Join The Falcons On A 4-Year Deal (UPDATE)

kirk cousins
Getty Image

UPDATE: Per Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Cousins will get $180 million from the Falcons, but only the first two years of the deal are fully guaranteed.

EARLIER: Ever since he became a full-time starter nine years ago in Washington, Kirk Cousins has been remarkably consistent. He has never been among the NFL’s elite, but he’s sat comfortably in the “good” category of quarterbacks for nearly a decade. You can pencil Cousins in for north of 4,000 yards, ~30 touchdowns, and ~10 interceptions just about every season (with some margin for error).

That’s not going to win any MVP awards, but it is better than most teams get out of their quarterback position on an annual basis. For that reason, even coming off of an Achilles injury eight games into this past season, Cousins was the hottest quarterback name on the free agent market. While many teams at the bottom of the league will look to the Draft in April to solve their quarterback issues, those in the middle looking for an upgrade figured to take a long look at Cousins, giving him some serious leverage to land another big contract coming off of injury.

Minnesota wanted to bring Cousins back, but they had competition, namely from the Atlanta Falcons who are desperate to upgrade their QB spot after watching Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke effectively cost them a playoff berth a year ago. And on Monday afternoon, media reports about Cousins heading to Atlanta were confirmed by his agent, who announced that he will sign a 4-year deal.

Cousins will turn 36 before the 2024 season and is coming off of an achilles tear, so the financial terms here will be especially interesting. Regardless, the Falcons went out and got an upgrade at QB for new head coach Raheem Morris as they look to break a 6-year postseason drought.

The Green Bay Packers Will Sign Former Raiders Star RB Josh Jacobs

josh jacobs

The Green Bay Packers are looking to build a contender once again in the NFC North after the emergence of Jordan Love over the course of his first season as starter in 2023. By the end of the season and the playoffs, Love looked like a top-10 QB in the league as Green Bay appears set to once again seamlessly transition from one longtime starter to another after trading Aaron Rodgers to New York.

A lot of the Packers success last year coincided with Aaron Jones returning to form and good health, as having a dynamic rushing attack opened things up tremendously for their offense. That seemed to turn on a light bulb in the Green Bay front office coming into this offseason, as they looked to bolster their running back room with A.J. Dillon becoming a free agent after a down year. Jones and the Packers are headed into the final year of his deal, and while the Packers are looking to re-sign him coming off of such a strong close to the season, they have gone out and added another star back in free agency in a bit of a shocker, landing former Raiders standout back Josh Jacobs.

The financial details of the signing aren’t known yet, and will obviously be important to how positive this signing is for the Packers. Jacobs is a year removed from leading the league with 1,653 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns in 2022, but last year he was not able to replicate that success, rushing for 805 yards in 13 games before ending his season due to a quad injury. The Packers will hope his down year was more a product of a training camp holdout and a Raiders offense that didn’t have much going for it at the quarterback position, and that Jacobs can regain his form on a consistent basis in Green Bay. If the Packers do bring Jones back as well on a new deal, they would figure to have one of the top running back tandems in the league to alleviate pressure from Love and create a dynamic offense capable of hurting a defense at every level.

For the Raiders, they’ll now turn to Zamir White as their lead back but will have plenty to address on offense as free agency continues and the Draft nears closer.
