Compassionate interaction between a frazzled dad and his 6-year-old son has people in tears

Anyone who has parented a spirited “threenager” knows how hard handling toddler tantrums can be. Parents often joke about our wee ones throwing down, because laughter is sometimes the only way to cope. But in reality, it can be extremely disturbing and distressing for the entire household when a family member carries on in a way that feels—or truly is—out of control.

Major tantrums can be especially hard for parents who didn’t have good parenting examples themselves. It takes superhuman patience to be the parents we want to be some days, and none of us does it perfectly all the time. When a child is screaming and crying over something irrational and nothing seems to be working to get them to stop, exhausted parents can lose their cool and respond in ways they normally wouldn’t.

That’s one reason a TikTok video of a father and son captured in the aftermath of an epic toddler tantrum has caught people’s attention. Many of us have been in the dad’s shoes before, frazzled and shaken by the relentlessness and intensity of a 3-year-old’s meltdown. And many of us have been in the son’s shoes as well, witnessing a younger sibling’s insanity and our parents’ struggle to manage the situation.

But the way this father and son support one another is bringing people to tears with its beautiful example of emotional regulation, empathy and connection.

TikTok user @mollymikos shared the video, explaining that their 3-year-old had just thrown a 2 1/2-hour tantrum (which she clarified was actually two tantrums with a 10-minute break in between). “We did not have Unicorn Chopsticks and would not go to the store (where they don’t sell unicorn chopsticks….),” she explained when someone asked what the fit was over. Sounds about right. The tyrannical threes are no joke.

So much to love in this video. First, the 6-year-old, whom Mikos describes as “empathetic” and “a deeply feeling kid,” demonstrated impressive self-regulation skills. The way he started taking deep breaths and suggested that he and Dad do some deep breathing together was inspiring. Second, the dad apologized for losing it and explained that they were trying to set a better example as parents, which many parents are far too proud to do. Finally, the kiddo displayed such deep understanding and compassion, it was clear these parents have worked hard to create healthy emotional connections and open communication in their family.

Mikos tells Upworthy that she and her husband have been working hard to break the stress cycles that so often get passed down from generation to generation.

“I didn’t realize how much would be brought up by having children,” she says. “We are working on repairing and changing the way we interact with our children so that they feel supported instead of shamed.”

Mikos says social media has given this generation of parents access to experts, studies and revelations that can help them navigate raising kids with gentle parenting principles. She personally finds inspiration on Instagram from Dr. Becky Kennedy, Janet Lansbury, Conscious Mommy and Eli Harwood. “They’ve changed my life,” she says.

People are loving the example Mikos and her husband are setting with—and for—their kids.

“This just goes to show how much of a great job your doing!!!” wrote one commenter. “Toddlers are hard and the fact your 6yo was able to empathize and communicate shows it.”

“This is why you’re good parents,” shared another. “Your older child can regulate his emotions and is empathetic. That’s amazing at any age and you did that.”

“Not me sobbing at 2 am bc this is the healthiest parent-child relationship ever,” wrote another. “Keep it up 😭😭💕 yall are doing awesome.”

Mikos has been heartened by all the comments on her video. The fact that her husband apologized to their son for losing his patience was particularly moving for a lot of commenters, especially those who had parents who never did that. “Many people have said that they didn’t realize parents could apologize to their children,” she says. “Yes. Please apologize. They need to know we make mistakes, and that we still love them and are constantly trying to do better.”

Apologizing to our kids when we’re in the wrong or when we behave in a way we’re not proud of demonstrates respect and teaches accountability by example. The fact that this dad is comfortable apologizing is likely a big reason why his son has the emotional tools that he does.

Gentle, compassionate parenting may not instantaneously end a tantrum, but it does pay off with big emotional and relational wins in the long run.

Doggo loses his mind with joy when he finds out he’s going to visit Grandma and Grandpa

Eagerly anticipating a trip to the fun and doting grandparents’ house is something we think of children doing, but one couple’s doggo proves that visiting the “grandpawrents” is just as exciting.

In a TikTok video that’s been viewed nearly 30 million times, dog owners Skylar and Deko are nearing the end of a 20-hour drive from Phoenix to Kansas City, Missouri. Their good doggo named Nosh, sits in the backseat, looking out the front window.

Suddenly, Skylar asks Nosh if he wants to go visit Safta and Boppa, the nicknames of his grandparents, and he immediately reacts. You can practically hear him say, “Whut? Grandma and Grandpa? Are you serious?!? OMG, I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!!! When are we gonna get there?!?” only it comes out as a series of squeals and whimpers and sneezy woofs of joy.

Seriously, what did Safta and Boppa do to earn this kind of reaction to their names being spoken?

Watch:

@sky.q

The other video got a “sensitive content warning” because of the end… but why?? 😂 #repost #dogsofttiktok #dogs #australiancattledog #blueheeler #acd #heeler #cattledog

That flop for the belly rub immediately upon seeing Grandpa? And the “I’m so excited to see you I gotta pee” moment? Too much.

“He always reacts like this to his grandparents,” Skylar told Newsweek, “whether it’s been months or only a few hours since he has seen them last.”

She said they waited until they were five minutes away to tell him, and he acted like this for the full five minutes until they arrived. It’s no wonder they waited until they were almost there to tell Nosh where they were going. Can you imagine making him wait any longer?

Skylar shared another video that demonstrates the love between Nosh and his favorite people.

@sky.q

Anyone else’s dog love grandma and grandpa more than anyone else? 😂❤️ #blueheeler #australiancattledog #acd #dog #heeler #cattledog

In case you’re wondering what kind of dog Nosh is, he’s an Australian Cattle Dog, also known as a Blue Heeler. (A real-life Bluey, if you will.) You can see even more videos of his excitement over going to the grandparents’ house on Skylar’s TikTok channel here.

Only child asks her friends what it’s like to grow up with siblings. They showed her instead.

Ahhh, siblings. Sometimes they’re your best friends and other times your living room turns into an MMA octagon over the remote control. If you grew up with brothers and sisters, it’s hard to imagine what it would be like to be an only child. (That’s not to say you didn’t dream about it when your sister stole your favorite shirt for the 30th time.)

But not everyone has siblings, so it can be equally as hard for someone who grew up as an only child to picture what it would be like to have them. Only children also likely had moments where they dreamt of having a little brother or sister, not realizing the literal torment siblings can inflict on each other.

TikTok creator Lonnie IIV recently posted a video of himself with two other friends seemingly out to lunch, when the girl in the group asked what it was like to grow up with siblings. In less than a minute she realized she lucked out being an only child because her two guy friends gave her a crash course in sibling behavior.

In the clip, Lonnie asked if she wanted her drink but then promptly told her she didn’t want it before swirling his fingers around in her cup. This prompted the other friend to throw his balled-up straw paper at her before repeatedly dipping chopsticks into her soup. The woman just laughed and looked seemingly confused at the nonsense her guy friends were displaying. Of course, no sibling experience would be complete without the classic “stop touching me” added for a little pizzazz.

“She got an entire childhood in less than a minute,” one user wrote.

A different user said, “This is so accurate.”

Other commenters started sharing the things they did to their siblings or vice versa. The comment thread was full of childhood sibling…nostalgia? Seems weird to look back on those memories with fondness, yet here we are.

Honestly, my brother used to ask if he could have a bite of my food, and when I said no, he would just lick it before asking again. In turn, when my brothers wouldn’t let me play video games with them, I would pinch my arm until it turned red and run out of the room crying to tell my mom they hit me.

Kids are weird sometimes and thankfully there are usually doses of love in between. But if you grew up with siblings, you’ll likely appreciate the video below. Or it’ll give you flashbacks. It’s a toss-up. If you don’t have siblings, you may feel the need to have us evaluated. We turned out alright…mostly.

Caitlin Clark Leads Iowa To An OT Comeback Win Over Nebraska For Big Ten Title

Caitlin Clark did Caitlin Clark things again on Sunday, scoring 30 of her game-high 34 points in the second half and overtime as she led Iowa to its third straight Big Ten title.

Iowa trailed No. 5 Nebraska 46-35 at the break and Clark had just four first-half points on 2 of 13 shooting. But the soon-to-be top pick in the WNBA Draft didn’t become college basketball’s all-time leading scorer by accident.

Clark got going just 29 seconds into the third quarter, hitting a jumper to pry the lid off the basket. Nebraska still led by 9 with less than 7 minutes to go in the third quarter, but an 11-1 Iowa run capped off by a Clark layup gave Iowa its first lead with 2:17 to go in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Nebraska managed to take an 8-point lead with 2:38 to go, looking like it would win the rubber match in the third meeting between the two.

But Clark had 12 points in the fourth quarter alone and either made or assisted every Iowa fourth-quarter basket, including one of her signature stepback 3s and made a layup to tie it in the closing seconds of regulation to force overtime.

In overtime, the two teams traded haymakers, with made three after made three. Nebraska’s Logan Nissley gave the Cornhuskers a 1-point lead with a late three, but Clark couldn’t let someone take her move as she hit yet another stepback 3 to give Iowa the lead for good with 51 seconds left.

Ultimately, Iowa would pull away for a 94-89 win on the back of 34 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds for Clark, who capped off her Big Ten career in style by leading a comeback win over a very game Huskers squad. Now, the Hawkeyes seem destined for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament where Clark will try to lead Iowa to their first national title.

The tension between Doja Cat and users online has become too much to handle. From the criticism about her rumored boyfriend to being branded a “Satanist,” the “Paint The Town Red” rapper is done defending herself across social media. Yesterday (March 9), Doja announced she was done with the Instagram platform.

Before Doja deactivated her account, she penned a note to explain what went into the decision. “Hey, I’m gonna deactivate because I’m not really feeling this anymore,” she wrote. “You guys take care of yourselves. I like coming here to find inspo and see people being creative. But I just feel like this is getting to be too much.”

She went on to provide examples of what she’s had to endure. “The way I’m spoken to on here and treated makes me have f*cked up thoughts,” she said. “Please watch how you talk to and about people on the internet. Bye.”

Back in July 2023, Doja called out her “Kittenz” super fans for their “silly” support name and demanded they “get a job.” After her statement, many pages dedicated to her were deactivated in protest, and she lost over 250,000 Instagram followers. Since then, users who called her out for past jokes about Cardi B and Kanye West have monitored her online activity.

Rudy Gobert Got Fined $100,000 For Making A Money Sign At Scott Foster

The NBA does not take kindly to players or coaches criticizing the officials, regularly doling out fines to those that choose to go after the referees either on the court or with the media after a game.

That is doubly the case when someone dares go beyond calling them out for being bad and chooses to question the integrity of the officials, as that almost always leads to a heftier fine. The Minnesota Timberwolves should be keenly aware of this after Anthony Edwards got hit with a $40,000 fine for calling the officials “cheating ass refs” after a win over the Thunder earlier this year. However, that message was apparently not fully received by the whole locker room, as Rudy Gobert picked up the heftiest player fine of the year (non-suspension division) for making a money gesture at Scott Foster after he picked up his sixth foul and then calling out refs for possibly being influenced by sports betting after the game.

That was always going to draw a fine and as the league’s statement notes, they took into account Gobert’s history of criticizing referees when handing out the $100,000 penalty. Gobert did get that frustration off his chest but at the cost of a six-figure pay day for the league office, making for a very expensive vent session.

Classy Guy Donald Trump Mocked Joe Biden’s Stutter (After Asking Democrats To Vote For Him)

The Republican Party hasn’t exactly been the party for nice people in a very long time, but it got considerably worse after the guy who mocks people with disabilities took over. Since 2015, Donald Trump has unleashed the dark id lurking inside conservatives, turning childish nicknames and sadistic cruelty into a main feature of today’s GOP. Problem is, Trump’s obnoxiousness alienates a good chunk of the country, including middle-of-the-road folks and milder Republican voters. If he wants to win, he’s going to have make himself a bit more appealing. Alas, Donald Trump is inescapably Donald Trump.

Per Mediaite, the former and possibly future president held one of his rambling rallies in Rome, Georgia, where he tried to appeal to the other side, who may not want four more years of Joe Biden.

“But if you’re a disillusioned Democrat, of which there are many today I extend an open hand, an open invitation, and I ask you to join us on the noble quest of saving our country,” he declared. “Saving our country! Together, we will turn the page forever on the miserable nightmare of the Biden presidency.”

Trump then proceeded to demonstrate the kind of world Democrats would be joining if they went Trump. While trashing Biden’s “angry, dark, hate-filled” State of the Union address, he should he non-hate-filled he was by mocking Biden’s stutter, doing an impersonation of him saying, “Bring the country t-t-together? I’m going to bring it together.”

He also did some “I know you are but what am I?” business to Biden calling him a “threat to democracy.” What was Trump’s response? “No, he’s a threat to democracy. I will tell you. He’s a threat to democracy.”

To summarize: Trump, who’s no stranger to angry, dark, hate-filled speeches, accused Biden of doing what he does, then demonstrated his kindness by mocking a condition he’s had since a kid. And yet what’s Trump’s excuse for his mushy brain?

According To Mark Ronson, Ryan Gosling’s Smash Song ‘I’m Just Ken’ Was Nearly Cut From ‘Barbie’

Mark Ronson Oscars Nominees Luncheon 2024

Tonight (March 10), the biggest hits in film will battle it out at the 2024 Oscars.

Most cinema enthusiasts predict Oppenheimer will sweep the ceremony. However, there’s one category that fans believe belongs to BarbieBest Original Song. At the forefront are Billie Eilish’sWhat Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken” performed by “vocal powerhouseRyan Gosling. The latter earned Gosling his first-ever Billboard Hot 100 entry and Grammy nomination.

But, according to the track’s co-writer and producer, Mark Ronson, the smash hit almost didn’t make it into the movie. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Ronson revealed that the track was on the chopping block. “At that first screening, the song wasn’t working,” he said. “I panicked. The humor wasn’t translating, and Greta [Gerwig] had to fight. The studio asked her how much she really needed it, and she said, ‘With every inch of my body.’ And then there was a big swing.”

Ronson explained that the song conflicted with Gerwig’s vision for the movie. “Ken is ridiculous,” he said. “But Greta’s point was that nobody should ever be laughing at a character. We feel their pain, as crazy as that sounds about a guy wearing a white mink and two pairs of sunglasses. I never wanted to write a song for a cheap laugh. You want something to get under people’s skin.”

Ultimately, the track was tweaked, and the final cut was made, which the Ken collective couldn’t appreciate more. Gosling is set to perform the song onstage at the 2024 Oscars. Find more information here.

Fletcher Cox Announced His Retirement As The Eagles Lose Another Key Figure

fletcher cox

The Philadelphia Eagles will enter the 2024 season needing to replace longtime stalwarts on the interior of both their offensive and defensive lines. On offense, they’ll be in search of a replacement for Jason Kelce, as the future Hall of Fame center called it a career last week in an emotional press conference.

On defense, they’ll have to replace Fletcher Cox, a former four-time All-Pro and 6-time Pro Bowler, who was the anchor in the middle of their defensive line for more than a decade. Cox announced his retirement on Sunday, posting a message to the Eagles organization, his teammates and coaches, and Eagles fans thanking them for everything since he was drafted to Philadelphia in 2012.

Cox was never the biggest in the middle of the line, but had the strength to hold up inside and tremendous quickness that made him a terrific pass rusher from the interior. For his career, he’ll retire with 519 tackles, 70 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, 14 fumble recoveries, and three touchdowns across his 12-year career. Last year, he had 33 tackles and five sacks (along with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery), and while the Eagles have steadily been adding to the interior of their defensive line around him in the draft in recent years, his presence will be difficult to replace.

Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter figure to take on even larger roles next year in Cox’s absence, and will need to prove themselves as consistent impact players if they’re going to replace one of the league’s best defensive tackles. Beyond that, Cox was able to get the line organized and brought a veteran savvy and leadership that will need to be filled in some way, which is easier said than done. While Philadelphia still has ample talent throughout their roster, losing Kelce and Cox in one offseason will be difficult to overcome both on the field and in the locker room, and the Eagles will need some new leaders to emerge from their roster to fill that void.

Madonna Mistakenly Calls Out A Fan In A Wheelchair For Not Standing Up During ‘The Celebration Tour’ Latest Stop

Madonna The Celebration Tour London 2023
Getty Image

In Madonna’s words, she is “lucky” to be alive. Last year, the “Like A Prayer” singer faced a life-threatening medical illness, which left her in a coma for two days. This new look at life makes Madonna’s The Celebration Tour much more sentimental. However, yesterday (March 9), Madonna mistakenly misjudged a concertgoer’s medical condition as a form of disrespect.

During Madonna’s stop at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, she called out a fan for not standing up. In a video shared by Pop Crave, Madonna went to speak with ticketholders in the VIP area. When she noticed that one ticketholder wasn’t on their feet, she demanded that they rise. The fan informed Madonna that they were in a wheelchair. Madonna then went on to apologize for the remarks.

“Oh, okay, politically incorrect; sorry about that,” she said. “I’m glad you’re here.” https://twitter.com/PopCrave/status/1766603640914006388

Users online slammed Madonna for her actions.

“But is it an offense to sit down during a show, though? Like, what if I feel tired,” wrote one user.

“Does it matter if they’re sitting or standing? They paid for the ticket and took the time to be there? Isn’t that enough,” asked another.

“Ok, you shouldn’t be calling people out for sitting down anyway. She’s not the queen of England. Some people are tired or have conditions where they need to sit. You want them to leave altogether,” wrote another.

“This is why I’ve never seen her live. Refuse to,” penned another.
