Man lists 8 not fun, but very important things you need to start doing as an adult.

Who among us hasn’t come into full adulthood wishing they had known certain things that could have made life so so so much easier in the long run? Choices that, if made, ultimately would have been much better for our well-being…not to mention our wallets.

But then again that is all part of growing older and (hopefully) wiser. However there is something to be said about getting advice from those who’ve been there, rather than learning the hard way every single time.

Thankfully, a man who goes by @johnfluenzer on TikTok has a great list of things young people should start doing once they become adults. Are any of his suggestions fun, cool or trendy? Not at all. But they are most definitely accurate. Just ask any 30+-year-olds who wished they had done at least four of these things.

John started off by saying, “welcome to being an adult. Maybe you weren’t told this by your parents, but this is through my trial and error.”

Listed below are the eight vital things to maintaining a healthy adulthood, that most of us have no idea about until well into adulthood.

1. Getting an annual doctor visit.

annual checkup

This is the bare minimum amount of visits one should be making, according to John. He recommended more if you “have more medical concerns.”

2. Dental visits. For a yearly cleaning at the very least.

dentist near me

“Keep in mind that a $300 cavity can turn into a $1,500 root canal, which can then turn into a $2,000 crown on top of the $1,500 you just paid, so it’s better to just pay the $300 or whatever it is for a cavity, and just get it sorted,” he explained.

As someone with this exact experience (ignored a cavity because she didn’t want to pay $300, only to pay $1500 years later, even with insurance) I can ruefully confirm.

…as can others, judging by the comments sections to John’s video.

“I didn’t go to the dentist for 8 years and now I need a root canal. Learn from my mistakes people,” one person wrote.

Seriously, no amount of flossing and avoiding sugar can make up for a professional cleaning and checkup, folks.

Last note on this subject—John mentioned that if you couldn’t afford to go to a dentist, to check for nearby dental schools that can often perform necessary procedures at a fraction of the cost.

Though he specifically mentioned dental schools in Canada, that is also an option in America. Things I wish I had known as a 20-year-old…

3. Next up, John suggested that if you are sexually active, to get checked for STDs/STIs.

std check, std clinic

“If you’re uncomfortable with your GP, or you don’t have a GP, go to a sexual health clinic…. Just go get tested — it’s better to know,” he said.

4. Get vaccines. “Be up on your vaccines, not just your flu shot.”

vaccine near me

“We’re talking Hep A/Hep B, and also if you’re under 25, get your Gardasil 9. It’s three shots. It prevents the cancer-causing HPV,” he explained.

And while he mostly discussed the free health care options found in Canada, HPV vaccines are covered by most insurances in the US. Plus there are other potentially free/low cost resources, such as the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program for those under 19.

5. Then get a PEP, aka Post-exposure prophylaxis, if you had a “risky sexual encounter” and are worried about having contracted HIV.

pep near me

For this one, time really is of the essence. The sooner a PEP is taken, the more effective it is at preventing HIV, and must be taken within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV.

Gotta say…list time 3-5 seem particularly important, as many young people are not given thorough sex education.

6. Rent. Everyone’s favorite.

rent prices, apartment near me

John explains that especially in a housing crisis, “your rent should be the first thing you take care of every month.”

“It comes before everything. Now maybe if you have kids and they need to eat, of course, that’s important,” he added. “But a roof over their head is way more important and you do not want to give landlords any excuse to have you evicted. Pay your rent and pay it on time.”

7. Hold onto that cellphone as long as possible.

cheap cellphone, lowering cellphone bill

“I know we all want the new cell phones.Keep your phone as long as possible, OK?” he said. “I don’t care if it’s any iPhone 10, iPhone 8, keep it for as long as possible. Especially if you’re under no contract—you have so much freedom.”

Instead of getting a new phone, John suggested switching providers every month to get special deals and save “$40–50 bucks a month,” which, as we all know, really adds up.

8. Only have one streaming subscription a month.

netflix, hbo, showtime, hulu

This one was admittedly “controversial,” John shared, but in his point of view, it’s a no brainer.

“You don’t need Netflix, Disney, Hulu, whatever… you don’t need them all the same month. January do Netflix, cancel. February do Hulu… All of these different apps, they let you save watchlists, right, like ‘My List.’ And if you cancel your subscription and you restart it two months later, your list is still there. So just save stuff, only pay for it once a month, and try to save some money,” he suggested.

What a wake up call, right? But other hardened adults couldn’t help but agree with John.

“This is very good advice, can confirm (unfortunately) as a fellow adult lol,” one person wrote.

Others appreciated how he took the time to share this list to help younger people avoid some pretty disheartening setbacks.

“I love people like you so much, just her to help others in life. People like you are so important because you didn’t have to make this video but you did.”

You can’t always trust what you hear on TikTok, but John’s advice is sound. What most life hacks seem to have in common, other than a healthy blend of common sense and 20/20 hindsight, is that it puts some form of security at the forefront—not necessarily instant gratification. Fun is so important, but as anyone with experience will tell you, peace of mind is priceless.

Woman offered $200K to sell her dog explains the reason behind her decision

For most dog owners, their pooch is a member of the family, best friend, confidante, and loyal protector. They would never dream of giving their dog away to anyone, let alone selling their pet. However, what if the offer was $200,000?

A TikTokker named Alexis Elliott says she received a “legit” offer of $200,000 for her Doberman pinscher puppy, but refused because she wouldn’t dream of selling her dog.

“Someone offered us $200K for our puppy, and I told my husband ‘absolutely f*cking not,’” the TikToker said. “Would you guys sell your dogs for $200k?” she asks later in the video. “Like, that is my baby! That is my baby. I birthed her. That is my child. Like there is no money, I would not sell her. But it just got me thinking, like, I wonder if people would have taken that 200K?”

After posing the question, Alexis received a lot of responses. Surprisingly, many of them would entertain the $200,000 offer.

Warning: Video contains strong language.

“In this economy? Yes.” one user wrote, and people agreed with them, giving the comment over 8,000 likes. “I would absolutely, without even thinking about it, LMAO,” Maee G added. Others thought that it was morally right to take the money. “It’s a crime to not accept 200k,” Lana said.

One woman tried to alter the deal. “Not my dog but the husband, absolutely,” a user wrote.

About the same number of commenters said they would never sell their dogs, even for $200,000. “A lot of you in these comments don’t deserve a dog,” Adero_77 wrote. “Omg never. The thought of my dog being confused and feeling abandoned breaks my heart,” Julie added.

“One time, someone asked my brother if he would sell his puppy. My brother answered, ‘No, I’d rather have an empty wallet than an empty house,’” Tracy Laguna wrote.

One person responded to the video with a funny clip of their dog waiting on the curb with a suitcase. “For 200k, damn!” I am Yelitzii captioned the video.

@iamyelitzii

#stitch with @Alexis For 200k damn 😂

Some believe that if their dog went to live with someone with $200k to spend on them, it would probably be living in a better place. “If they’re offering $200k they can clearly provide him a better life than I can! This is best for both of us,” Clutch Grabs wrote. “Listen, with that type of money, me & my dog would live our best lives… separately,” Jasmine added.

Those who said would never sell their dogs because it would cause them distress are correct. “Yes, your dog will miss you when you give them away,” Preventive Vet wrote on its blog. However, dogs can adapt to a new family situation. “It is normal for a dog to grieve the loss of their previous family and go through an acclimation period in their new home,” the blog continues. “While they may miss you, if they are in a caring environment and their needs are being met, they will do well.”

Fans are begging Jack Black for a Britney spears album after covering ‘One More Time’

No one knows why Jack Black and Kyle Gass, aka Tenacious D, decided to randomly cover a Britney Spears song. All we know is it rocks.

And they don’t cover just any Britney Spears song. They covered “Baby One More Time.” A quintessential part of the Britney Spears canon.

But it was so good—in that distinct blend of goofy and epic that only Black and Gass can conjure—that fans are begging the duo to create an entire “album of covers.”

In the video, which has been viewed over 20 million times on TikTok and spread all over various social media platforms, the Black sports a matching t-shirt and short set with a flaming phoenix (very rock-n-roll) as energetically lip syncs to his own vocal performance of the iconic pop tune.

Meanwhile, Gass plays the perfect hype man in the background.

@jackblack

Tenacious B! 🐼

♬ original sound – Jack Black

Needless to say, viewers were pleased.

“Something I never thought I needed and here I am loving this 🥰,” one viewer wrote.

Another added, “why does everything Tenacious D touches come out so much better.”

And, of course, fans were begging for more, especially in the form of an album.

“A full album of covers please.”

“I would love an album that’s just jack black covering early 2000s white girl music.”

“I’d love a pop goes punk-esque album of Tenacious D covering random 90s pop songs.”

“A Tenacious D cover album would be the greatest thing to ever happen.”

One person even suggested Tenacious D play the next Super Bowl HalfTime Show…which is clearly the greatest idea of all time.

People love Jack Black for his ability to always put his own delightful personal spin on things. He’s certainly not afraid to be big, bold or outrageously silly, even in moments that normally demand decorum. He’s so attuned to his inner child that it helps bring out the playful spirit in everyone. Plus, he’s one hell of a talented musician. What’s not to like?

Meek Mill Was Reportedly Involved In A Car Accident And Claims It Was Supposedly Due To A Manufacturing Issue

Over the past few months, Meek Mill has tried to keep his head down. When the “Too Good To Be True” rapper made a public appearance, it was to raise awareness for probation reform through his nonprofit organization (Reform Alliance) or to tease a reunion with his former Maybach Music Group labelmate, Wale.

But as he prepared to reenter the spotlight, Meek faced a few unfortunate circumstances. Yesterday (March 1), Meek was reportedly involved in a bad car accident, which he claims was due to a manufacturing issue.

In a post on his Instagram Stories, Meek uploaded a photo of the frightening crash. “God telling [me] don’t crash out for the busta,” he wrote. “Imma listen, sh*t knocked me out, LOL. GMC. The whole brake pedal slipped off my first time driving SMH.”

While Meek should be celebrating the release of his latest EP, Heathenism, he has to tend to both his physical health and mental well-being. Meek’s reference to crashing out is seemingly in response to his string of posts on X (formerly Twitter) to shut down claims made in a new lawsuit that he was involved in a sexual relationship with Diddy.

Meek Mill has denied the remarks made in the filing.

Heathenism EP is out now via DreamChasers. Find more information here.

Meek Mill is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

The Official Cause Of Richard Lewis’ Death Has Been Made Public

richard lewis

Last week Richard Lewis — legendary comedian and Larry David’s frequent argument-mate on Curb Your Enthusiasm — passed away at the age of 76. At the time it was revealed that the cause of death was a heart attack, though it had also been known that he’d been suffering from Parkinson’s. Now more details have emerged.

The Blast got their hands on a copy of Lewis’ death certificate, which revealed that he died of a “cardiopulmonary arrest.” According to the National Library of Medicine, that’s a “cessation of adequate heart function and respiration.” It is also known as a cardiac arrest.

A secondary cause of death was also revealed: Parkinson’s disease, which Lewis battled for many years (though he only made his struggles public last year).

Lewis’ passing caused an avalanche of tributes from friends, colleagues, and fans alike. Social media was flooded with not only those but endless, hilarious clips of him getting into it with David on Curb, as they frequently did over the nearly quarter-of-a-century he spent appearing on the show.

On Thursday, two days after Lewis’ death, Joyce, his wife, used his Twitter/X account to address the outpouring of love.

“Thank you for your loving tributes,” she wrote. “He would be beyond thrilled and so touched, as am I. In response to the many queries , I know Richard would appreciate donations in his memory to the Los Angeles based charity or the charity of your choice.”

David himself posted a particularly gutting (and very singular) tribute to his longtime pal. “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” he said in a statement. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob, and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

Style Watch: The Fits You Need For Final Days Of Winter & The Early Days Of Spring

Style Watch
ALD/Randolph/KHY/Supreme/Uproxx

Welcome to Style Watch, your one-stop shop for all the fits to elevate your wardrobe. Winter is on its last legs, and while the spring season is fast approaching we still have some cold days ahead of us. So to help gear you up, we’ve collected our favorite layer-able pieces out now that’ll help you get through the final days of winter (especially if you have a ski trip planned) along with a lot of transition gear as the weather changes.

Spring-centric collections are already dropping at Supreme, Palace, Aimé Leon Dore, KHY, Randolph, DGK, and more — so there is plenty for you to sort through, whether you’re chilling in the PNW or basking in the sunshine of Miami. Let’s dive into all the best fashion drops happening right now.

Supreme x The North Face — Spring 2024 Collection

Style Watch
Supreme

Price: Varies

You can always count on Supreme and The North Face to produce gold when the two labels join forces. The latest collection features jackets, bags, tops, crewnecks, and other layer-able essentials that’ll have you all geared up for the late winter/ early spring season.

An obvious highlight from the collection is the two-toned split Taped Seam Shell Jacket, which features a 3-layer poly shell, full zip closure, and a camo-pattern design. It looks like what would happen if Supreme, TNF, and BAPE joined forces. BAPE wasn’t involved but think of how dope this piece would’ve looked if they were!

Something to consider Supreme, you’re welcome for the suggestion.

Shop the Supreme x The North Face Spring 2024 collection at Supreme on February 29th at 11 am EDT.

Arc’teryx — Focal LT Hoody

Style Watch
Arc

Price: $400

Vancouver high-end outdoor label Arc’teryx is back with a new collection of men’s and women’s wear dubbed “Veilance.” The concept behind the Veilance collection is a merging of mountain-wear tech-focused design with modern urban aesthetics for a collection that looks at home both on the mountain and in the city.

We love the Focal LT Hoody with its bright yellow colorway. The jacket sports a softshell build made of recycled nylon with an exposed front zipper, taped seams, an adjustable hood, and articulated patterning that allows for greater movement while still supplying you with warmth and comfort for those harsher cold conditions.

It’s a nice balance between tech-focused performance and style and a showcase for what the brand does best.

Pick up the Focal LY Hoody at Arc’Teryx.

Aimé Leon Dore — Mesh Moto Long Sleeve Tee

Style Watch
Aime Leon Dore

Price: $95

Teddy Santis’ Aimé Leon Dore just launched its latest collection for the spring season which consists of statement jackets, trousers, bowling shirts, loafers, jackets, and accessories, in the brand’s signature minimalist aesthetic. But one piece in particular, the Mesh Moto Long-Sleeve, jumped out to us because of how much of a departure it is for the label.

The moto-inspired t-shirt features a cotton mesh build with screen-printed logos and artwork across the body and arms. It captures the loud and busy look of the moto aesthetic, without all the leather, offering a casual interpretation of the style. The t-shirt drops in two colorways, a loud orange version, and a more subdued white and blue take.

Pick up the Aimé Leon Dore Mesh Moto Long Sleeve Tee at the ALD online store.

KHY — Drop 004

Style Watch
KHY

Price: Varies

Kylie Jenner’s KHY label dropped its fourth collection on Wednesday, February 28th. The highly anticipated collection continues the brand’s sleek body-hugging silky aesthetic with a collection of flexible and lightweight tops, bottoms, and dresses in three monochromatic colorways including black, white, and beige.

There is a certain minimalism to this brand that reminds us of Yeezy brand. That shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but we wonder when the Kardashian/Jenner’s will move beyond the shadow of Ye’s signature aesthetic.

Drop 004 is broken up into three sub-categories including Sleek Stretch, a collection of body-contour pieces, Mesh Stretch, a collection of lightweight sheer pieces, and Suede Stretch, a collection of stretchy fabrics brushed in a soft suede-like texture. All three of the collections feature similar silhouettes and designs, allowing you a small level of customization based on personal preference.

The collection exudes luxury but none of the pieces hit the $100 mark, so we’re loving the cheaper price point here.

Shop KHY’s Drop 004 here.

Palace — Spring 2024 Drop 5

Style Watch
Palace

Price: Varies

London skatewear brand Palace is well into its spring 2024 release schedule with this Friday bringing in the fifth drop in the series. For the latest drop, Palace is putting a special focus on outerwear and layer-ables with a collection of water-repellent jackets, hoodies, and velour sets.

The collection also has a handful of graphic t-shirts in various colors, hats, and vests. Highlights include the Cordura Nyco RS Jacket, which drops in three colorways, sports a water-repellent build with embroidered details, and the brand’s Triferg arm branding.

If you’re already a fan of Palace you’re going to love the new collection, if you were hoping the brand would change it up a bit, keep hoping. If it ain’t broke right?

Shop the fifth Palace Spring 2024 drop on the Palace webstore on March 1st.

Haven — Rove Packable Jacket GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER

Style Watch
Haven

Price: $491

Looking for a jacket that’ll have you equipped for the final days of winter but still looks fashionable and flattering? Haven’s Rove Packable Jacket is your best bet.

The jacket features a polyester build and is equipped with everything you need to keep warm and dry including a durable three-layer GORE-TEX shell, protecting you from wind and water while still being lightweight, with a relaxed fit, dual front zip, multiple hidden pockets for you to lose your phone in, and an ergonomic adjustable hood.

But this jacket isn’t called the “packable jacket,” just because it’s lightweight, it’s also, as the name implies, packable. You could fold up the entire jacket into its own pocket, which makes it a staple for pretty much any trip you take ever. I’m not saying we need more clothes that can fold up into their own pockets, but it’s nice to have and we’ll certainly take them when they come if they look this good.

Pick up the Rove Packable Jacket GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPED at Haven.

Urban Outfitters — Kimchi Blue Ballet Mini Skirt

Style Watch
Urban Outfitters

Price: $29.99

If you’re living in a warmer climate and are already feeling the spring vibes, UO has got you. The Kimchi Blue Ballet Mini Skirt is cute and spring-ready featuring a wrap silhouette, adjustable tie, layered hem, and an a-line silhouette.

The skirt is available in three colors including solid lilac and a black and neutral iteration with a graphic print of jewelry and heirlooms. With its bows, lace, and ruffles, this skirt edges gently into the coquette aesthetic.

Pick up the Kimchi Blue Ballet Mini Skirt at Urban Outfitters.

Out From Under Sweet Dreams Pointelle Baby Tee/Pant

Style Watch
Urban Outfitters

Price: $29/$45

Loungewear is just as important as outerwear, so if you’re looking for something to wear around the house that still flatters, the Out From Under Sweet Dreams Pointelle set is for you. Both pieces from the set are constructed from 100% cotton, with rosette detailing with a slim-fit silhouette. The top sports a cropped cut and a scooped neckline, while the bottoms are mid-rise with a kick-flare and Capri length.

Be warned though, the set has a semi-sheer quality to it so if you’re going to step out of the house for a second in the set, you might want to throw on a big coat.

Pick up the Out From Under Sweet Dreams Pointelle set at Urban Outfitters.

EDITOR’S PICK: Every Other Thursday — Double Snap Hoodie

Style Watch
Every Other Tuesday

Price: $114

New. Favorite. Hoodie.

My god, I’ve been over-wearing this. The scripted logo is delicate and unobtrusive. The double snaps allow you to make it warmer on cold days or loosen it on warmer ones. The stitching, seams, and fabric are all sturdy.

Here’s a sorta weird compliment that is actually really important: A lot of heavier hoodies are so thick and stiff that they sort of… make the wearer look thiccc. This hoodie doesn’t have that problem. In fashion talk, it still has a nice drape to it.

I love this and I’ll be styling it with jeans or chinos all spring.

Pick up the Double Snap Hoodie from Every Other Tuesday here.

EDITOR’S PICK: DGK Breeze Puff Jacket

Style Watch
DGK

Price: $200

I bought this jacket late in the winter. Perhaps because I live in Southern California and we really don’t track the seasons here. Still, I’m telling you to buy it now because 1) you might go skiing, 2) I have no idea how cold it is where you are, and 3) I can’t imagine a jacket this cool coming along very often.

I mean… this thing has a fleece-lined detachable hood! It’s green outside and cream inside! And that almost shimmery finish? It’s because the jacket is actually made of very fine corduroy.

It’s puffy without being unwieldy and stylish without screaming “I try too hard.”

I know you’re not really in jacket-buying mode right now but I also can’t really imagine loving a jacket quite this much next year. It’s possible but… not likely. And I’m not the only one digging it. I wore it on a recent ski trip and was complimented left and right.

Trust me, it wasn’t because of my skill on the mountain.

Pick up the Breeze Puff Jacket from DGK here.

EDITOR’S PICK: Randolph x W’Menswear — C-9 Para-Parka

Style Watch
Randolph

Price: $400

We’ve covered Randolph’s sunglasses a whole lot in the past — top to bottom, it’s my favorite brand — and if I lost my trusty pair of tan Sportsman today, I’d buck up and buy another tomorrow. Every time I wear them I feel like freaking Paul Newman.

So I was thrilled to see the brand venture into the style game with this lightweight “parka” that’s perfect for spring. Especially when I saw the cut and colors of this “parka.”

Randolph’s skill has always been found in the details. This featherweight jacket is no different. The look is simple but stands out and pairs easily, the zippers and fabric feel sturdy, and (according to my lady, who I bought this for) it’s deceptively warm. I didn’t spring for the matching hat, but I did get the glasses — which feel perfect for this spring as blend vintage and modern in a way I just love.

I’m not sure if Randolph is dropping more clothes but if they do, I’ll be ready.

Watch Joe Manchin Lose His Sh*t When One Of His Critics Calls Him A Nasty Name

joe-manchin-top.jpeg
Getty Image

For years Joe Manchin has been the Senate’s second most annoying Democrat. Or is it a toss-up? Kyrsten Sinema may be a terrible dresser who’s voted against a minimum wage hike and a motion that would have codified abortion rights nationwide. Manchin, on the other hand, makes a show of being a thorn in Joe Biden’s side and supporting policies that harm his constituents. One of them involves an environmentally dodgy pipeline, which so angered protesters that they called him a nasty name — and got a nasty respose.

Per The Daily Beast, the environmental group Climate Defiance posted a video of them confronting the West Virginia senator at an event at Harvard University. They’re angry over the continuing construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline, which runs through his home state, cutting through the Apalachin Trail. One protester accused Manchin of having “sold our futures and got rich doing it.” Manchin nervously laughed through it, but when the young man called him a “sick f*ck,” the fake smile dropped and he got right up in his face.

What appeared to be one of Manchin’s security detail intervened, but instead of calming things down, he took it next level, throwing the protester to the ground.

Later in the video Manchin tries to get the protesters to “sit down” for a civil chat, but they refused, accusing him of having “received more funding from fossil fuels than any other senator.” Eventually they chanted “protect our futures, not your profits” as he tried unsuccessfully to ignore them.

The pipeline cleared regulatory obstacles and lawsuits last summer. Manchin celebrated the move, claiming it would create jobs. A number of environmental groups, including the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, have opposed it, saying it could lead to soil erosion, landslides, gas leaks, and weaker water quality.

Manchin is used to pissing off people in his own party, and he usually keeps things cool. If you want to see what it’s like when he loses it, check out the video above.

Here Is Nicki Minaj’s ‘Pink Friday 2 World Tour’ Setlist

Nicki Minaj Pink Friday 2 World Tour 2024

Nicki Minaj is one of the most visible rappers in the game. While you can often catch the “Big Foot” rapper posting online to her millions of followers, seeing Minaj live isn’t as simple. Ever so often, Minaj will sign on to headline a music festival (hi, Dreamville Fest and Rolling Loud California) but those are rare occurrences.

However, thanks to her Pink Friday 2 World Tour, the Barbs worldwide will have the opportunity to catch Minaj when it stops in a city near them. Yesterday (March 1), the 56-date run kicked off in Oakland, California. Although the opening acts are still pending, attendees have shared what has been hashed out, including the working setlist.

Continue below for the full setlist (according to Setlist.Fm), the remaining tour dates, and the official tour poster.

‘Dune’ Director Denis Villeneuve Reveals The Character He Was Extremely Sad To Lose For ‘Part Two’

Dune Thufir Hawat Stephen McKinley Henderson
Warner Bros. Discovery

Dune: Part Two is a very, very long movie. And yet there are still key things missing from the book. Alia, Paul’s sister, is never born (though she’s visible as a fetus and, briefly, as a very famous star). Paul never teaches the Fremen the Weirding Way. A major character we won’t reveal is offed in a different fashion. And where’s Thufir Hawat, the Mentat played in the first by Stephen McKinley Henderson? Thufir is one of the survivors of the Harkonen assault on House Atreides, and yet he’s nowhere to be seen in Part Two. There’s a reason for his absence, says director/co-writer Denis Villeneuve.

“One of the most painful choices for me on this one was Thufir Hawat,” Villeneuve told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s a character I absolutely love, but I decided right at the beginning that I was making a Bene Gesserit adaptation. That meant that Mentats are not as present as they should be, but it’s the nature of the adaptation.”

The Mentats, for those who forgot, are basically human computers, because computers are outlawed in the distant future of Frank Herbert’s Dune. Remember, the original novels take place long after a war between humans and computers, who had enslaved the former after they gave them too much power. But that’s certainly not relevant to anything happening today.

Anyway, we live in an age when fans bristle at when any adaptation changes anything from the source. So kudos to Villeneuve for making some changes, and for acknowledging that you can’t keep everything.

“When you adapt, there’s always some kind of violence toward the original material,” Villeneuve said. “You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices.”

There’s another major change from the Herberts, involving Zendaya’s Fremen warrior Chani. But that’s for another article.

Fun fact: Dune: Part Two runs some two hours and 45 minutes, covering the second half of the novel. But in the far battier David Lynch version from 1984, the same events are plowed through in under an hour. And yet Lynch still found room for Thufir, Alia’s birth, a lot of Weirding Way action, and a silly but cool death for one of that major character we mentioned.
