Jonathan Majors Is Being Sued For Defamation After Claiming That He’s ‘Completely Innocent’ Of Assaulting Grace Jabbari

Jonathan Majors
Getty Image

Shortly after being found guilty of harassment and assault, prompting Marvel to swiftly fire him, Jonathan Majors booked an ill-advised interview on Good Morning America. Why was it ill-advised? Not only did Majors compare himself to Martin Luther King Jr., but his answers have now landed him in the crosshairs of a defamation lawsuit.

Much like Donald Trump how repeatedly denied sexually assaulting E. Jean Carroll despite being found guilty in court, Majors denied assaulting his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari during his interview with GMA. Jabbari did not take that declaration lightly, and is now suing Majors for “battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution, and defamation.”

Via The Hollywood Reporter:

“Now that Majors can no longer physically abuse Grace, he has resorted to very publicly abusing her reputation. Following his arrest, Majors immediately implemented an extensive media campaign smearing Grace, claiming that he was “completely innocent,” “is provably the victim,” that he “did not assault her whatsoever,” and that “this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital,” the suit reads.

Jabbari’s lawsuit details much of the same domestic abuse that was shared in the criminal trial that found Majors to be guilty of assault. The former Marvel star is still awaiting a sentencing hearing that will reportedly take place in April. He faces a potential year in prison.

The Five Best NBA Draft Prospects In The 2024 NCAA Tournament Midwest Region

The 2024 Men’s NCAA Tournament gets underway across the country this week. There is a four-game appetizer in Dayton on Tuesday and Wednesday before the main event, complete with madness, begins in earnest on Thursday afternoon. Casual observers and die-hard fans will dive in at the same time, following their brackets and the general excitement in the event.

Still, there is another defined angle for evaluation over the next few weeks, and it comes through the lens of the 2024 NBA Draft. The consensus is that the 2024 class is not terribly inspiring in comparison to previous groups, especially when it comes to college prospects, but some players always leap up the board in March and there are plenty of prospects to monitor. We’re going to let you know which players you need to watch as the Tournament begins, and here, we look at the top prospects in the Midwest Region.

1. Dalton Knecht, guard, Tennessee
2. Ryan Dunn, forward, Virginia
3. Kevin McCullar, forward, Kansas
4. Johnny Furphy, forward, Kansas
5. Zach Edey, center, Purdue

Dalton Knecht is about to turn 23 years old, and he was playing Division II basketball a year ago. How on earth is he on this list, you ask? Well, he’s been unbelievable this season for Tennessee. In fact, he’s the highest-rated prospect in the Midwest Region and one of the most prolific scorers in the entire class. He is a big-time shooter with real craft for scoring at all three levels, and there isn’t much concern about Knecht’s ability to at least translate into a potent offensive role player in the NBA. The questions come on defense and with regard to his gigantic one-year jump, but he’s a monster.

After that, there is a trio of potential first round selections in Dunn, McCullar, and Furphy. Dunn is the best defensive player in the country, swallowing up opponents across the positional spectrum. He projects as an impactful defender immediately at the NBA level, but his offense is, to be generous, a work in progress. Furphy has been rising throughout the season as a freshman at Kansas, and he is a dynamic transition presence at 6’9 with the ability to shoot it. On the other end of the age curve on the Jayhawks, McCullar is a wily veteran at the college level who has come a long way on offense, but he’s battled injuries this year and his age might be seen as a weakness at the NBA level, at least on draft night.

And, finally, Edey is, to say the least, a divisive NBA prospect. To be clear, Edey is the best college basketball player in the country. That is very clear, and he is about to earn his second straight National Player of the Year award with hilarious numbers, both in traditional and more advanced categories. At the NBA level, it will be interesting to see how he’s able to hold up in space defensively, and there is a huge range from scouts on Edey, with some viewing him as a potential top-20 pick and others unwilling to draft him at all.

Tyla And Travis Scott’s ‘Water (Remix)’ Video Is Dripping In Sexual Chemistry, Making The Steamy Visual Well Worth The Wait

The jury is still out on what Tyla’s hit song “Water” is actually about. What’s no longer up for speculation is whether the remix featuring Travis Scott will receive an official video. Last night (March 18), the long-awaited visual for the track formerly dropped on Tyla’s YouTube page.

As one of the listed tracks on her forthcoming self-titled album, the pressure was on to deliver something worth talking about, and that they did. The steamy video was well worth the wait. Tyla and Scott’s sexual chemistry is dripping throughout the visual, and that tension flows well into Scott’s guest verse.

“You keep it wet, that’s a real-life challenge / All that ass gotta pour out of gallons / Beauty in the top, keep balance / She in her bag, she wildin’ / You ain’t gotta hide your talent / Even if you did, I bet I find it / You know I’m comin’ from the H / But it’s +27 when I dial in,” raps Scott.

The flirty lyrics referencing South Africa’s international country code (Tyla’s home country) surely make the onscreen tension even more believable. Whether it is all for the camera or a sprinkle of actual romance doesn’t matter. All that matters is the fantasy has been gathered, packaged, and bottled to refresh the audience’s thirst for more Tyla.

Watch the “Water (Remix)” video above.

Tyla is out 3/22 via FAX/Epic Records. Find more information here.

All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Best New Indie
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Waxahatchee, Cola, Hana Vu, and more.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

Waxahatchee – “365”

Tigers Blood, the sixth studio album from Waxahatchee, is officially less than a week away from release. But Katie Crutchfield has shared one last single before it comes out. “365,” in Crutchfield’s own words, “is a song about codependency as it pertains to addiction and relationships with addicts.” The Kansas City-based musician’s latest tune is a slow burn, gradually picking up steam as it inches toward its single chorus. “So when you kill, I kill / When you ache, I ache,” she sings at its apex. It may be one of the quietest songs on the record, but that unsparing aura just makes it all the more hard-hitting.

Horse Jumper Of Love – “Gates Of Heaven”

Last year, the New York trio Horse Jumper Of Love released Heartbreak Rules, a mini-album that eschewed the fuzzed-out clamor that typically permeates their music. They’re back in boisterous action on “Gates Of Heaven,” which includes production from the Asheville-based Alex Farrar, known for his work with de rigeur indie darlings such as Wednesday and Indigo De Souza. This song has been sitting on the back burner since 2015, and it’s finally, thankfully, seeing the light of day.

Adrianne Lenker – I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand

https://adriannelenker.bandcamp.com/album/i-won-t-let-go-of-your-hand

Big Thief frontwoman Adrianne Lenker is only a few days shy of her new solo album, Bright Future. Exclusively on Bandcamp, though, Lenker has shared a gorgeous new EP, I Won’t Let Go Of Your Hand. 100% of proceeds go to the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. These six songs were all recorded, in Lenker’s own words, “the moment they were written.” This new EP, despite it being a collection of sparse demos, captures the filigreed beauty that defines so much of her songwriting.

Gouge Away – Deep Sage

On the Doolittle closer, “Gouge Away,” the Pixies succinctly melded their rowdier tendencies and melodic proclivities into one song. As Black Francis oscillated between quiet singing and shouted yelps, he showed that loud music doesn’t need to sacrifice tunefulness. Poetically, the Fort Lauderdale hardcore five-piece Gouge Away captures that spirit in a modern light. Their third album, Deep Sage, is the best argument they’ve made for that notion yet. From the bursts of noise that punctuate the Sonic Youthian “Idealized” to the shoegaze-adjacent, six-minute closer “Dallas,” Gouge Away demonstrate the versatility not only of themselves, but of hardcore as a genre.

Mount Kimbie – “Empty And Silent”

2024 has seen the return of Mount Kimbie, the English electronic duo that hasn’t released a new record in almost seven years. Dominic Maker and Kai Campos are amending that with The Sunset Violent, which is out next month on the revered Warp Records. On “Empty And Silent,” their new single, they unite once again with fellow Londoner King Krule, and Archy Marshall’s coarse vocals lend themselves nicely to the blissed-out milieu Mount Kimbie have occupied throughout their career.

Cola – “Bitter Melon”

Cola, the Canadian post-punk band that rose from the ashes of Ought, released their debut album, Deep In View, back in 2022. Following up on the momentum that record generated, they’ve shared the one-off single, “Bitter Melon,” a labyrinthine, spellbinding tune that unfolds over the course of six-plus minutes. Hopefully, this new song foreshadows what we can expect next from the Montreal trio.

Hana Vu – “Hammer”

“Hammer” is one of the first songs that Hana Vu wrote for Romanticism, her upcoming fourth studio album. Right off the bat, it showcases new terrain for the Los Angeles-based songwriter. Mandolin strums pervade the mix loud and clear, not as mere garnish but as a primary ingredient. And when the chorus hits, with Vu’s impassioned delivery and enveloping guitars, Vu’s heavy sentiments become your own: “It’s hard to say what the trouble is / I’ll run away ‘til it’s all behind.”

Gustaf – “Close”

Package 2, the second album from NYC post-punkers Gustaf, is imminent, releasing in just a couple of weeks. They’ve gotten seals of approval from Beck, Yard Act, and Wet Leg, the latter two of whom they’ve toured with. It seems only fair to say that they’re poised for a significant breakthrough. “Close,” featuring sharp guitar stabs and a driving bassline, is the perfect thesis statement for Gustaf’s compelling, arty tendencies.

Yeule – “Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl”

I Saw The TV Glow, the highly anticipated A24 film from horror savant Jane Schoenbrun, will certainly resonate with indie heads. Alex G is handling the score, Snail Mail’s Lindsey Jordan is in the cast, and Phoebe Bridgers appears in the movie as her real-life self. Alongside Bridgers and indie-pop songwriter Caroline Polachek, Singaporean glitch-pop provocateur Yeule is also on the OST. Their cover of Broken Social Scene’s classic, memed-to-death “Anthems For A Seventeen Year-Old Girl” subverts the twee milieu of the original by bit-crushing it into an eerie, digital omen. It’s perfect for a horror movie about getting sucked into a television.

Mitski – “Coyote, My Little Brother”

For the Spotify Singles series, indie-pop juggernaut Mitski has shared a cover of Peter Lafarge’s “Coyote, My Little Brother,” which was popularized in the ‘60s by folk singer Pete Seeger. The cover includes Jenny Magaña on double bass and Patrick Hyland, who produced Mitski’s most recent album, the excellent The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We, on acoustic guitar. It’s a spare, beautiful rendition of the environmentalist original.

Here’s Why Jonathan Glazer’s Acceptance Speech Isn’t On The Oscars’ YouTube Channel

Jonathan Glazer
Getty Image

One of the few people at the 2024 Oscars to speak out against Israel’s war on Gaza was The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer. “Right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation, which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,” the filmmaker said while accepting the award for Best International Feature Film. “Whether the victims of October the 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of this dehumanization, how do we resist?”

It was a powerful speech (that led to an open letter against Glazer), but you can’t find the video on the Oscars’ official YouTube page. The immediate assumption is that it’s being censored, but that’s not the case. Indiewire reports that “as part of the distribution agreement between ABC and AMPAS [Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences], ABC has a 30-day window in which it has exclusive clip rights to a pre-determined list of 10 different categories, one of those being International Feature Film.”

It hasn’t even been 10 days since Oppenheimer won Best Picture, so until the 30-day agreement is over, the only ways to watch the speech are by visiting ABC’s YouTube channel or the Oscars website.

Here, I’ll save you the time:

Former Fifth Grader Travis Kelce Is In Talks To Host A Revival Of ‘Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?’

travis kelce
Getty Image

Do you remember Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? It premiered in 2007 (peak gameshow era) and consisted of actual adults being outsmarted by fifth graders in just about every school subject there is, all hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy, who was worthy enough to get the show on Fox. Even Ken Jennings wasn’t safe, and we all know how seriously he takes this stuff.

The game show consisted of guests tacking 5th-grade trivia and ran until 2011, with a fourth season debuting in 2015. Nickelodeon revived the series in 2019 with John Cena, and now it looks like Amazon Prime is trying to get class back in session with a new iteration of the show, this time hosted by former fifth grader Travis Kelce.

Kelce is in talks to host a new version of the game show which would reportedly rely on celebrity guests instead of children. Presumably, real-life children are busy with actual schoolwork, but the celebs might be cool too!

While the gig has not yet been confirmed, this seems to be just the beginning of Kelce’s non-football career. The athlete recently signed with CAA to help him branch into the fun world of various hosting gigs. Kelce also hosts the “New Heights” podcast with his brother Jason. Who knows, maybe he’ll host the Oscars next?

Not bad for a man who just finished his college degree after a decade!! He can teach the youths about perseverance.

Is Trump Throwing Alina Habba Under The Bus Like Rudy Giuliani?

Alina Habba
Getty Image

After failing to miraculously free Donald Trump from a massive judgment against him in the New York civil fraud case, Alina Habba might be getting a view that befalls so many of the former president’s legal team: The underside of the bus.

Perhaps like Rudy Giuliani before her, Habba might soon regret representing Trump after being reportedly left out of a settlement agreement between a waitress and Trump’s Bedminster golf club in New Jersey. Alice Bianco received an $82,500 settlement from the golf course after she claimed to have been duped into a hush money deal after being sexually harassed.

However, the settlement reportedly excludes Habba, which could leave her open to being sued by Bianco. Via The Daily Beast:

Bianco feels betrayed by Habba, who was one of her Bedminster regulars until, her lawsuit says, Habba posed as a concerned friend giving legal advice about how to address alleged sexual harassment by a supervisor—only to abuse that relationship and “fraudulently inducing” her to “quickly agree to unconscionable and illegal terms.”

The alleged ploy, rapidly paced over just two weeks, gave Habba leverage to arrange a hush money deal that would curry favor with the former president and earn her way into his inner circle.

According to Bianco’s lawyer via The Daily Beast, his client is “certainly considering” suing Trump’s latest legal eagle for fraud. As well, Trump himself even admits that being his attorney is a risky proposition.

“Any lawyer who takes a TRUMP CASE is either ‘CRAZY,’ or a TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT,” Trump ranted on Truth Social back in January. “I will make my decision soon!”

Sufjan Stevens Is Bringing The ‘Illinoise’ To Broadway, Where His Musical Will Officially Open Soon

Sufjan Stevens is officially bringing his Illinoise musical to Broadway. The project is based on his 2005 album Illinois and will open at the St. James Theater in New York on April 24. It had previously run at Fisher Center at Bard, Park Avenue Armory, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater, before getting a Broadway commitment.

The musical is being directed and choreographed by Justin Peck, who also wrote it alongside Sibblies Drury. Stevens’ music will be included, in terms of the role his input played in the show. Finally, the arrangements will be done by Timo Andres.

“This project has been ruminating in my mind for nearly 20 years, which makes this moment even more sublime,” Peck shared. “Illinoise is a coming-of-age story that takes the audience on a journey through the American heartland — from campfire storytelling to the edges of the cosmos — all told through a unique blend of music, dance, and theater. On behalf of my team, we welcome this rare opportunity with full hearts.”

The cast will include Yesenia Ayala, Kara Chan, Ben Cook, Gaby Diaz, Jeanette Delgado, and more. Fans will get to experience Illinoise if they’re in New York until August 10.

More information about the Sufjan Stevens-inspired Broadway musical can be found here.
