Europeans are admitting these 15 everyday American conveniences feel like a ‘luxury’

Even though European countries and America are roughly on the same level regarding development, there are still some stark differences in their ways of life. Americans may look to Europe and feel a bit jealous over their free healthcare systems and more laid-back approach to their professional lives.

But Europeans who visit America are also in awe of some of the everyday things that Americans take for granted, which seem to be luxuries.

A Reddit user named Prof_XdR asked Europeans on the AskReddit subforum to share the everyday American things that they believe are luxuries, and the question received nearly 13,000 responses.

Clearly, Europeans admire many things about the American way of life.

Here are 15 of the best responses to the question: “Europeans of Reddit, what do Americans have every day that you see as a luxury?”

1. Disability access

“Disability access everywhere. I can go to any place — theater, store, office, school, whatever — with confidence that I’ll be able to navigate fine in my wheelchair. They’ll have ramps and/or elevators.” — 5AgainstRhoneIsland

“Of all the things in this thread, the disability access is it IMO. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was an absolute game changer, and European countries and the EU as a whole should be embarrassed for not having something like it.” — Jedrekk

2. Climate changes

“You can pretty much choose to live in any climate you like when you live in the USA and still be in the same country. You like 4 seasons: Move to the Northeast. You like the humid ocean climate – move to Seattle. You like dry warm weather – move to Los Angeles. You like deserts, move to Arizona. You like warm and humid weather – move to the Southeast.” — DachauPrince

“I work as an ecologist and the amount of biodiversity in California is insane. I’ll do biological surveys a few hundred miles apart and see so many different plants and animals at each site. I’ve even done work at sites fairly close to each other (sub 50 miles apart) and will still find stark differences between sites. It’s a magic state for wildlife biologists.” — Skinsnax

3. Big kitchens

“Big kitchens and big refrigerators/ freezers. Even in my student apartment, we had a pretty good-sized kitchen. I was dating a Czech girl and her parents came to visit. When they went to my apartment for dinner, the mom was just amazed at the size of my fridge. They were amused when I dumped the scraps in the sink and turned on the garbage disposal. They’d heard about it but had never seen one.” — Granadafan

4. Square footage

“The massive houses, a special room just for your massive washer and dryer units, 2 car garage, basically you have tons of space.” — Howiebledsoe

“The size of your homes in places like Utah and Texas. There’s a dedicated room for everything. Kids playroom that isn’t the living room or the kid’s bedroom, walk-in pantry room, a laundry room.” — mcnunu

5. Free refills

“As an American, it’s so easy to take this for granted. Similarly, getting free ice water in the US as well is something I often forget isn’t exactly a thing in many other parts of the world.” — Gaveuptheghost

6. National parks

“There’s just human development on virtually every inch of large parts of Europe. So even when there are parks, they’re not always as untouched as American parks. And the population density in large parts of Europe means you see a lot more people in the parks. America has national parks that are so untouched and massive that you can really be alone if you want to be.” — CactusBoyScout

7. A/C

“Americans pump it all summer long.” — Websurfer49

8. Two peaceful neighbors (Mexico and Canada)

“Remember, the world’s longest undefended border is between Canada and the United States. That says something about our relationship.” — Dervishler

“We Europeans both love and hate each other in ways that Americans will never understand. But basically, not being French should be enough.” — TitanFox98

10. Big schools

“My high school just had a pool, 3 gyms, an agricultural barn with stalls for students to keep the animals they were raising to show at the rodeo, a few labs, a theater, a full-size kitchen that was used for the culinary classes to share (not the cafeteria), 3 tennis courts, 2 soccer fields that were also used for football practice, and a football stadium with a Jumbotron. At the end of the year, the culinary classes would cook breakfast for the graduating class.” — Elephantepiphany

11. Free bathrooms

“As an American who lived in Europe with little kids, this was frustrating. My wife found an app of free public restrooms in Europe.” — QuotidianPain

12. Mexican food

“Real Mexican food. We have Mexican restaurants in my home country, but the owners are usually not Mexican and it’s just not the same. Now, I’m living in Japan and it’s the same problem… Mexican food is so delicious.” — punpun_Osa

13. Supermarkets

“Enormous supermarkets with abundant choice. I always feel like I’m in Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory when I enter one. There’s so much stuff!” — Better protection

14. Big showers

“This stands out – I have two really great friends (an expat woman and her husband) that live in the UK, and when I went to stay at their first place together, their shower was like a 2-foot-wide plastic shield outside of the bathtub. I had to stay so close to the wall, so I didn’t spray water all over the bathroom.” — IGNSolar7

15. Money

“There’s a huge gap between the volume of physical/material stuff Americans count as normal and what Europeans consider normal. An American home might have three TVs versus one, six or seven rooms full of furniture instead of two or three, extra small appliances added all the time like air fryers and espresso machines, new PCs and phones every couple of years because of constant upgrade marketing … the American perception that there’s not enough money is partly down to the giant volume of things Americans regard as minimum equipment.” — AnotherPint

“In effect, when you account for wages and cost of living, luxuries (which usually have similar prices around the world) are proportionally cheaper for Americans. They make up less of their wage and, therefore, make less of a difference. Standard of living is completely different for a working-class American because they can afford luxuries people from working class in other countries can’t.” — ltlyellowcould

NewJeans Wants YouTube To Reveal The Identity Of Somebody Making ‘Defamatory’ Videos And Asked A Federal Court For Help

NewJeans is asking a federal court to find and reveal the identity of a person who has allegedly posted “false and defamatory videos” about them on YouTube, according to Rolling Stone. The K-pop girl group filed an ex parte application last month after submitting a criminal complaint in South Korea. However, the case could not move forward without the poster’s identity.

The band’s lawyer originally attempted to get the person’s information from Google informally, but it did not work. The publication obtained the court documents that claim that the YouTuber goes by @Middle7 and has over 12,000 subscribers. They claim the user has “as many as 33 defamatory videos” about NewJeans, which have been viewed millions of times.

In NewJeans’ ex parte application, they note that @Middle7 allegedly “engaged in name-calling or other mocking behavior” against them, “all of which constitute defamation and/or crime of insult under the laws of the Republic of Korea.”

The outlet points out that the laws in South Korea do not take kindly to virtual harassment. Even last year, K-pop group IVE similarly had a lawyer get a name of a YouTuber making “false statements” through the US court system, and they were able to win a civil lawsuit in South Korea.

Only time will tell how NewJeans’ filing plays out.

Billy The Puppet Regrets To Inform You That ‘Saw XI’ Has Been Pushed Back A Year

saw-billy-the-puppet-social-featured.jpeg
LIONSGATE

There is nobody quite as hardworking as Billy the Puppet, who has been crafting his elaborate death traps for nearly twenty years. It’s the kind of work ethic that Chucky dreams about. But maybe he’s working too hard, and that’s why Lionsgate has pushed the latest Saw installment until next year.

Saw XI was originally supposed to hit theaters this September, but Billy has some disappointing news about that. “You’ve all anticipated my return asking when I may appear before you once more but anticipation is a funny thing,” the world-famous puppet said in a new video, adding that his team is working on “new traps to razor-sharp perfection.” Get it? He added, “You should expect nothing less. These traps will be made all the better with just a little time. The clock is ticking.” Unfortunately, the clock isn’t ticking fast enough, as the installment was pushed to September 26, 2025.

Luckily, there is some good news for horror fans. Lionsgate announced at CinemaCon that Jason Blum is set to revive The Blair Witch Project, the movie that invented awkward camera angles. The company recently opened a Blair Witch-themed escape room in Vegas, which sounds a lot like a Saw trap. Here’s hoping for a collab!

LeBron James Broke Down His Legendary Chase Down Block Of Andre Iguodala

In his 21-year career, LeBron James has been part of some iconic moments in NBA history, but no one individual play stands out more than his chase down block of Andre Iguodala in the 2016 NBA Finals.

That plus the Kyrie Irving three pointer that followed it are the indelible moments from the Cavs stunning championship comeback, with Mike Breen’s “BLOCKED BY JAMES” becoming one of the NBA’s iconic calls. On the latest episode of James’ Mind The Game podcast with JJ Redick, the two discussed LeBron’s prowess on chase down blocks by having him break down that play — and the role J.R. Smith played in that block that LeBron thinks goes under the radar.

As LeBron explains, he asks his teammates to do two things in a situation where he’s trailing the play and they’re the one back. The first is to not foul the guy on the break, even in a 2-on-1. The second is to make them alter their layup a little to slow down the timing and give him an extra second to get there before the ball can get to the backboard. Smith did both of those things, being an obstacle but not fouling on the 2-on-1 and then sliding over to make Iguodala do the extra clutch on the ball before going up for the layup, allowing LeBron to fly across the lane for the biggest defensive play of his career.

It’s cool hearing LeBron talk about this because, while a lot of it is the result of his insane athleticism and innate ability to read and react, it’s not entirely a play borne out of spontaneity. He drills in his teammates what to do in that situation to give him the best chance to make the play, and in the biggest possible moment, that paid off for the Cavs to get them a championship.

Kim Kardashian’s Sister Called Out Her Latest Bikini Photos For Being Extra ‘Thirsty’

Kim Kardashian has moved beyond thirst traps. She’s now posting “thirsty” traps. The American Horror Story: Delicate star shared photos on Instagram from her vacation in Turks and Caicos. “Cake Boss,” she wrote as a caption. In one picture, she’s turned away from the camera while posing in a bikini; in another, she’s pulling a white tank top over her head in the water.

Kardashian’s sister Khloé poked fun at her bikini photos, writing in the comments section, “OMG the thirsty caption is gold.”

This teasing comment comes after her other sister Kourtney Kardashian poked fun at the pair for a photo Kim posted of the trio on their vacation on April 7. In the Instagram photo, Kim and Khloé were snapped lounging on the beach in racy swimwear while Kourtney was seen in minuscule form on a lounger in the background. Kourtney reposted the photo on her Instagram Stories, writing in response, “I love taking pics with my sisters!”

Earlier in the week, Kardashian’s AHS: Delicate co-star Dominic Burgess described what it was like filming his first on-screen sex scene with her. “I was nervous and body-conscious, and to find out my first sex scene is going to be with an icon known for their beauty was a lot,” he told Variety. “But there was a great intimacy coordinator who asked what we felt comfortable with, and the director was John J. Gray, who I worked with on Feud — and Kim was wonderful. It ended up being a really pleasant experience.”

Vince Staples Doesn’t Approve Of Streamers Using Drake And Kendrick Lamar Beef To Promote Themselves

vince staples

Ever since his debut, Vince Staples has been reliable for offering a unique viewpoint on the issues facing hip-hop. With seemingly everyone in the genre focused on the possible feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, he unsurprisingly had a skewed take that pointed out a huge problem when it comes to the business of selling rap beef.

Noticing that Spotify had begun running billboards in Times Square reading, “Hip-hop is a competitive sport,” Vince censured the streamer in the latest episode of the Joe Budden Podcast. When the host called the Long Beach rapper and asked about the supposed dispute between Drake and Kendrick, Staples called out both Spotify and the rest of the cast.

“We either with the coonin’ or we not, bro,” he said. “Once n****s get mad, we got billboards from streamers talking about ‘Hip-Hop is a sport’, but we ain’t never seen a billboard from a streamer that said ‘give that n**** his publishing back.’” He also made several salient points about the adoption of hip-hop in pop music and tech while cutting out as many of the craftspeople involved as possible. Naturally, those goofs argued with Vince, making fun of him for “always being on some cerebral sh*t,” but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s right.

Queen Of The Random IP Margot Robbie Is Making A ‘Monopoly’ Movie For Lionsgate

Barbie Movie Margot Robbie
Warner Bros

Following the billion dollar success of Barbie, Hollywood studios quickly made a mad dash to develop every toy and game product they could get their hands on. One of those rumored properties was a movie based on the classic board game Monopoly, and Lionsgate seems to have locked down a key ingredient in making Barbie a box office behemoth: Margot Robbie.

According to Variety, Robbies’ LuckyChap production company is actively working on a narrative for a live-action movie based on Monopoly. (There’s no word yet on whether Robbie will also star in the film or just serve as a producer.) Naturally, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson is thrilled to work with the production team behind Barbie, the biggest hit of 2023 that had a strong presence at the Oscars:

“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” Fogelson said. “They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care, and join Monopoly with a clear point of view. We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”

The Monopoly news arrives on the heels of yet another seemingly random project for Robbie. LuckyChap is also producing a live-action movie based on the popular video game series The Sims. However, Robbie will not star in the project. She’ll simply serve as a producer for the film from Loki writer and director Kate Herron.
