Will J. Cole’s ‘7 Minute Drill’ Still Be Removed From Streaming?

j cole
Getty Image

When J. Cole titled his new mixtape Might Delete Later, fans had no idea how literal that name would end up being — or how quickly the prophesy would come to pass. Just three days passed before J. Cole declared one of the songs, “7 Minute Drill,” the “lamest sh*t I did in my f*ckin’ life.” The song, built around a halfhearted response to Kendrick Lamar’s fiery call-out on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That,” received a somewhat lukewarm response from the hip-hop community, who questioned the premises of many of its positions on Kendrick Lamar’s musical output along with the wisdom of J Cole chucking those particular stones from the inside of a glass mansion.

After he apologized for the song, are likely wondering whether he intends to withdraw it from streaming completely. And while that wouldn’t be completely unreasonable… it would be utterly horrible optics.

The last time J. Cole got into a simliarly sensational tiff with another rapper was in 2020, when he released “Snow On Tha Bluff” and stumbled backwards into an ill-advised beef with Noname. In that case, he was met with the concise but stern response “Song 33,” as well as disapproval from peers who called him out for distracting from more meaningful discussions at the time. Notably, although both rappers expressed regrets for the short-lived feud, both songs are still on streaming.

Should J. Cole retract “7 Minute Drill” completely when he did not do the same for “Snow On Tha Bluff,” the contrast would almost certainly call scrutiny to his questionable views toward women; some commenters have already noted that he apologized for dissing Kendrick (this after subtly and overtly inviting battle for years) but not for lyrics perceived as transphobic elsewhere on Might Delete Later. On “Pi,” he taunts a straw opponent, “I’m seeing hints of a trans fella / In cancel culture’s vicinity, he’s no killer, trust me / Beneath his chosen identity, there is still a pussy.” Fans on Twitter have rightly noted that this is just the latest example in a pattern of lyrics with demeaning views of queerness (see also: the Born Sinner intro “Villuminati,” with multiple uses of a gay slur).

So, as of now, it doesn’t look like J. Cole plans to remove “7 Minute Drill” from streaming, but there are certainly quite a few other tracks in his discograpy that could also use some pruning and apologies.

Future & Metro Boomin’s ‘We Still Don’t Trust You’: Everything To Know, Including The Release Date, Tracklist & More

Not even an untimely phone hack can stop Metro Boomin or his longtime partner-in-rhyme Future as they prepare for the release of their second joint album in as many months, We Still Don’t Trust You.

Fans fully expect them to pick up where they left off with the first installment of their multi-release project, We Don’t Trust You, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and gave both artists their first non-Drake-featuring No. 1 hit song on the Hot 100 — although it was still technically about Drake, thanks to Kendrick Lamar’s declaration of menacing intent on “Like That.” Will they continue their admittedly vague assault on their frequent collaborator on the next album? We’ll find out soon.

Here’s everything to know about We Still Don’t Trust You.

Release Date

We Still Don’t Trust You is out 4/12 via Epic Records/Boominati Worldwide/Republic Records

Before ‘Community,’ Alison Brie Was On A Failed Sitcom Pilot That Also Starred Jennifer Lawrence

Alison Brie

In the cutthroat world of sitcom pilots, not everything can get made. Sure, one would think that a comedy about a teenage mayor starring Anna Kendrick would be a big hit, but in 2004, there just wasn’t the market for that. There also wasn’t much interest in Alison Brie‘s early aughts comedy Not Another High School Show which could have launched the careers of the future Community star and Jennifer Lawrence, if only Comedy Central picked it up.

Brie was on Watch What Happens Live! with Andy Cohen when she was asked about the long-lost pilot. “This is a real deep cut. I once did a pilot for Comedy Central that didn’t get picked up called Not Another High School Show,” she explained, adding that the show — from the guys behind 2001’s spoof movie Not Another Teen Movie — was supposed to poke fun at popular trend dramas like Dawson’s Creek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. “I played Muffy the vampire slayer, the gag was that I had a huge muff,” she said (this was 2007, in case you couldn’t tell). “I had to go method, which made it really itchy.”

Brie then revealed that Oscar winner and Golden Globe loser Jennifer Lawrence was also in the pilot. “Jennifer Lawrence has one line in a scene where I mistakingly stabbed the janitor, and she runs in and is like ‘someone killed the janitor!’” she added. The good news? The internet was practically made for unearthing those long-lost gems, so you can still watch H. Jon Benjamin calling Lawrence “sweet tits” before his Bob’s Burgers days. It’s a historical relic.

“She was so lovely,” Brie added. “This was so long ago. I remember after Winter’s Bone came out and she was at the Oscars, I was sort of like, ‘I know that [girl], she killed the janitor!’” Lawrence was nominated for her first Oscar after Winter’s Bone was released in 2010, just three years after Not Another High School Show and a small stint on Monk. That’s an impressive resume.

‘Made me smile’: Jimmy Carter’s quote about homosexuality and the Bible resurfaces

Jimmy Carter, 99, was the 39th president of the United States (1977 to 1981). Looking back on his achievements both in and out of office, it’s easy to say that he was a man ahead of his time. He was far ahead of the mainstream when it came to advocating for social justice, human rights, and the environment.

Carter famously installed solar panels on the White House in 1979, only to have them removed by Ronald Reagan.

The former peanut farmer and Navy Lieutenant from Plains, Georgia, was also far ahead of his time when supporting gay rights. In 1976, while running for president, he said he would sign the Equality Act, an amendment to the 1964 Civil Rights Act that would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. “I will certainly sign it, because I don’t think it’s right to single out homosexuals for special abuse or special harassment,” he said.

He continued to advocate for gay rights as president. In 1977, the first gay delegation visited the White House. He also campaigned against California’s Proposition 6, which would have barred gays and lesbians from teaching in the state’s schools and was the first Democratic president to endorse gay rights in the party’s platform in 1980.

It may seem unusual for Cater, a confessed born-again Christian, to be a staunch advocate for gay rights. But he has publicly said that he believes that being pro-gay is wholly aligned with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Carter’s advocacy is in the spotlight once again after a meme featuring his thoughts about Christ and homosexuality from 2012 went viral on Reddit’s MadeMeSmile forum on April 8, 2024.

Jimmy Carter
byu/PR0CR45T184T0R inMadeMeSmile

The viral quote was taken from an interview with the Huffington Post in 2012, during which Carter promoted his book, “NIV, Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter.” At the time, LGBTQ rights were the subject of heated debate in Washington, and President Obama had just “evolved” and began publicly supporting same-sex marriage.

“A lot of people point to the Bible for reasons why gay people should not be in the church or accepted in any way,” the interviewer Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush said. But Carter responded by correctly noting that Jesus Christ never said anything about homosexuality.

“Homosexuality was well known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. In all of his teachings about multiple things—he never said that gay people should be condemned. I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies,” Carter said. “I draw the line, maybe arbitrarily, in requiring by law that churches must marry people. I’m a Baptist, and I believe that each congregation is autonomous and can govern its own affairs.

“So if a local Baptist church wants to accept gay members on an equal basis, which my church does, by the way, then that is fine. If a church decides not to, then government laws shouldn’t require them to,” he continued.

Three years later, Carter shared the same sentiments in another interview with the Huffington Post, this time shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. “I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else and I don’t see that gay marriage damages anyone else,” Carter said.

Jimmy Carter’s belief in gay rights stems from his faith as a Christian, but it’s also in complete alignment with his values as an American. Carter believed that the United States was a “beacon” for human rights, and in his 1981 presidential farewell address, he reminded the nation that the job was an ongoing struggle.

“The battle for human rights – at home and abroad – is far from over,” Carter said. “If we are to serve as a beacon for human rights, we must continue to perfect here at home the rights and values which we espouse around the world: A decent education for our children, adequate medical care for all Americans, an end to discrimination against minorities and women, a job for all those able to work, and freedom from injustice and religious intolerance.”

If Your Music Is Too Fast Or Too Slow, It’s Now Automatically Banned In The Russian Republic Of Chechnya

Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov 2023

Chechnya, a republic of Russia, just made an interesting legal move in terms of music: As NPR reports, Chechnya just announced a ban on music that is not within a certain tempo range. Artists will reportedly have until June 1 to re-write music that’s not in line with the new rule. It’s not currently clear how the new rules will be enforced.

The Chechen Ministry Of Culture announced the ban last week, by the order of Culture Minister Musa Dadayev and with the agreement of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

Dadayev said that “musical, vocal and choreographic” works must be 80 to 116 beats per minute in order to “conform to the Chechen mentality and sense of rhythm.”

Dadayev also said, “Borrowing musical culture from other peoples is inadmissible. We must bring to the people and to the future of our children the cultural heritage of the Chechen people. This includes the entire spectrum of moral and ethical standards of life for Chechens.”

As NPR notes, songs that don’t fit within the specified BPM range include “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston (68 BPM), “Imagine” by John Lennon (76 BPM), “Hello” by Adele (79 BPM), “Here Comes The Sun” by The Beatles (129 BPM), “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift (170 BPM), “16 Carriages” by Beyoncé (127 BPM), and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana (117 BPM).

The publication also notes that this ban will have an impact on a number of genres: “Electronic styles of music like house, techno, and dubstep all tend to have BPMs of over 116, says the audio tech company Izotope, while the average tempo of 2020’s best-selling pop songs was 122 BPM, according to the BBC.”

Azealia Banks Suggested That Tyler The Creator And Lil Nas X Become A ‘Power Couple’ And At Least One Of Them Seemed Into It

tyler the creator

Azealia Banks is mainly known for her incendiary takes on everything from Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter cover to Nicki Minaj’s feud with Megan Thee Stallion, but her latest hot take to go viral is slightly more… romantic(?). While criticizing Tyler The Creator and Lil Nas X for their romantic interests (ah, there it is), she made a suggestion that one seems open to and the other just seems confused by.

“I really think Tyler The Creator and Lil Nas X should get over their obsession with broke white bussy and become a power couple,” she wrote on Instagram. In a caption, she elaborated, “No more white Taco Bell-eating Caucasian twinkery, guys,” which is, admittedly, one hell of a roast. She also took the opportunity to accuse Lil Nas X of jocking her style (ONE hit 14 years ago, has anyone ever seen such a run of semi-relevance behind less?), offer some suggestions for new collaborators, and make vague allusions to the allegations against Diddy — who again, has also not had a serious hit in like a decade. Someone buy this woman a Delorean and the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity it’d take for her to catch up to 2024.

In any event, Tyler seemed amused by her matchmaking attempt, writing, “lmfao what the hell” in response. Nas took things a step further, joking(?), “azealia banks is right! Me and tyler SHOULD f*ck!”

I am sure that there are those in the stan community who would love nothing less than to see her unhinged shipping fantasy come true. Meanwhile, those of us who have business of our own to mind (and lord, how I wish mine did NOT include writing about this nonsense for clicks) will continue to do so while Banks worries about everybody else.
