Jon Stewart Welcomed A ‘The Daily Show’ Guest Who He Claims That Apple Didn’t Want Him To Host

Jon Stewart Daily Show AI
Comedy Central

Back in the fall of 2023, Jon Stewart surprisingly walked away from his lucrative Apple TV+ deal and his burgeoning new series The Problem with Jon Stewart. While Stewart would only say that he felt “hamstrung” by Apple, the two parties reportedly battled over the comedian’s plans to tackle AI. Stewart is not having that same problem after making his triumphant return to The Daily Show.

During Monday night’s episode, Stewart devoted his opening segment to roasting the tech industries’ massive investment in artificial intelligence and/or machine learning. The comedian paid particular attention to the way some tech CEOs danced around the topic of how AI will displace jobs because, as Stewart noted, the unspoken promise that AI will increase productivity without having a “people tax” as one tech CEO said. Stewart accurately joked that he’s talking about employees.

Later in the show, Stewart welcomed FTC chairperson Lina Khan and made an announcement. “I wanted to have you on a podcast and Apple asked us not to do it,” Stewart informed Khan. “They literally said, ‘Please don’t talk to her.’”

Stewart also revealed that Apple was against most of the material in the opening segment. Via Endgadget:

“They wouldn’t let us do even that dumb thing we just did in the first act on AI,” he told Khan. “Like, what is that sensitivity? Why are they so afraid to even have these conversations out in the public sphere?”

“I think it just shows the danger of what happens when you concentrate so much power and so much decision making in a small number of companies,” Khan replied.

Below is a segment like the one AI that Apple allegedly didn’t want Stewart to run:

‘Wheel Of Fortune’ And ‘Surprise Host’ Jared Leto Teamed Up To Make You Miss Pat Sajak (Too Soon) On April Fool’s Day

Pat Sajak previously announced his intention to retire as Wheel of Fortune host. Granted, this will not happen until the end of the current (forty-first) season when he will be replaced by self-professed “terrible speller” Ryan Seacrest. Yet on April 1, the most unholy day of the year, the show took a trial run on proceeding without Sajak, or at least, they pretended to do so. A most random “surprise host” joined the show, and yes, “random” is the key word here.

On Monday night, out popped Jared Leto in a suit with his rock-star hair like it was no big thing. Yes, Pat did swiftly return to the scene, so that we were spared actual Morbius-themed hosting duties, but even though Vanna White and the evening’s contestants played along for a few moments, this was enough to make the world know what it will be like to miss Pat Sajak.

For his part, Leto seemed perfectly game to don the customary game-show host attire and didn’t show a trace of nerves — perhaps he was fresh out of another transformative silent meditation retreat — but we didn’t see him strut that stuff for too long. Once relieved of his temporary hosting duties, Leto took to his Instagram story to toss out a joking emoji and ask, “How’d I do?”

As far as April Fool’s Day jokes go, this certainly wasn’t the worst that the world has ever seen. Still, it was no match for what Michael Che did to Colin Jost in 2023. Man, that was brutal.

Taylor Swift Cryptically Hints She Has ‘A Lot Of Exciting Things Coming Up’ Tied To Her New Album

Last night (April 1), Taylor Swift appeared via video message to accept her award for Artist Of The Year at the iHeartRadio Music Awards. And it wouldn’t be a Swift speech without fans dissecting it for clues. Given she is just a few weeks away from dropping her new album, The Tortured Poets Department, she decided to hint that she has a lot of plans for it in the works.

“We have so many exciting things ahead of us,” Swift said after thanking fans for voting for her to win. “I’m continuing on with the tour and, most importantly, I have a brand new album called The Tortured Poets Department, which comes out on April 19. I cannot wait to share it with you.”

“So, thank you for voting for me for this incredible honor: Artist Of The Year,” she added. “I am so blown away and so thankful and I just can’t wait to keep having fun with you guys because we have a lot of exciting things coming up. Thank you so much.”

Although Swift has allowed fans to pre-order physical and digital copies of the upcoming record, not much else is known about it outside of the tracklist — as a lead single has yet to be released. Here’s hoping Swifties get to hear what it sounds like soon.

Check out Swift’s full acceptance speech above.

The Tortured Poets Department is out 4/19 via Republic. Find more information here.

An ‘SNL’ Cast Member Responded To The Bizarre Claim That The Show Has Never Hired A ‘Hot Woman’

sarah sherman
Getty Image

Maybe banning TikTok isn’t a bad idea after all. Last month, Jahelis Castillo, who goes by @Jahelis on TikTok where she has over 100,000 followers, posted a video where she wondered why SNL has never hired a “hot woman.”

She clarified (a.k.a. further dug her own hot take grave) that she’s “not saying that every single woman on SNL is ugly, it’s just that none of them have ever been, like, hot. They all just kind of have looks that eventually grow on you.”

According to Newsweek, Castillo’s theory is that for a woman “to be considered funny, you have to be more funny than you are hot. And if you’re more hot than you are funny, then it boils down to you just not being funny at all.” Also, she called Jimmy Fallon “a conventionally super hot guy,” compared to Jason Sudeikis, Andy Samberg, Bowen Yang, who are “relatively hot.” Toonces the Driving Cat and Adam Driver’s dead bird were not ranked by their hotness.

Current very funny SNL cast member Sarah Sherman responded to the TikTok on X. “just found out i’m not hot. please give me and my family space to grieve privately and uglily at this time,” she wrote.

Here’s how others responded:

Conan writer Laurie Kilmartin astutely pointed out that “you don’t have to rebut this by listing SNL women that you think are hot,” but also, literally Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Seth Meyers Found What Might Be ‘The Most Deranged Thing’ Trump Has Ever Posted Online

Donald Trump had a very normal Easter. Well, normal for him, a guy who loves to post in all-caps on his rapidly crumbling social media ghost town. “HAPPY EASTER TO ALL,” the former president (and “rich asshole”) wrote on Truth Social, “INCLUDING CROOKED AND CORRUPT PROSECUTORS AND JUDGES THAT ARE DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO INTERFERE WITH THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2024, AND PUT ME IN PRISON, INCLUDING THOSE MANY PEOPLE THAT I COMPLETELY & TOTALLY DESPISE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO DESTROY AMERICA, A NOW FAILING NATION…”

Trump goes 165 words without a period, so I’m going to stop there.

This was only one of 70 times that Trump posted on Easter, as host Seth Meyers noted during Monday’s episode of Late Night. “What’s in the baskets at the Trump family Easter egg hunt, Cadbury meth eggs?” he joked.

After reading the entirety of the post above, Meyers called it “the most deranged thing Trump has ever posted online, which is saying something because he once misspelled his own name. Just put yourself in a place where a friend or loved one sent you a text like this. Would you immediately alert your entire family and urge them to seek help? Or would you write back and say, ‘You’ve got my vote in November!’?”

You can watch the Late Night clip above.

It Turns Out Beyoncé Got Stevie Wonder To Perform On One Of Her ‘Cowboy Carter’ Songs

Beyoncé got music icons contemporary and classic to help her out with her new album Cowboy Carter, collaborating with everybody from Dolly Parton to Miley Cyrus to Willie Nelson to Post Malone. It turns out the roster of collaborators goes deeper than the features: The full album credits were revealed previously and Stevie Wonder is credited with playing harmonica on the cover of Parton’s “Jolene.”

Beyoncé referenced this while accepting the Innovator Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards on Tuesday (April 1). Wonder presented it, and Beyoncé said, “Thank you so much, Stevie, I love you. I love you and I honor you. I want to thank you for making a way for all of us. I’m honored to receive this recognition from you, Stevie Wonder. Whenever anyone asks me if there’s anyone I can listen to for the rest of my life, it’s always you. So thank you, God bless you.”

Wonder responded, “I just want to thank you for motivating the world to become a better place.” Bey replied, “Thank you so much. And thank you for playing the harmonica on ‘Jolene.’”

Looking over the full album credits (again, find those here) reveals some other under-the-radar contributors to the album: Jay-Z, Raye, The-Dream, Pharrell Williams, and 070 Shake all have songwriting credits.

Latto Performed ‘Waterfalls’ With TLC At The iHeartRadio Awards And Fans Are Gushing Over Her Rendition Of Left Eye’s Classic Verse

latto tlc

Latto might be one of the biggest names from her native Atlanta (although she’ll be the first to get really specific and clarify she’s from Clayton County), but she stands on the shoulders of giants. During her performance at the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Awards (hosted by another Atlanta native, Ludacris), Latto acknowledged one of her late forebears with a rendition of Left Eye’s classic verse from TLC’s “Waterfalls” alongside TBoz and Chili. Her performance left fans on Twitter gushing in appreciation — although, of course, a certain fanbase looked less than enthused. However, even the Barbz couldn’t put a damper on the wave of love from the performance, which one accounted noted is a full-circle moment for Latto and TLC.

Meanwhile, with both Latto and Ice Spice in attendance — and no news of an outright fight, as of press time — fans are waiting with bated breath to see if the two rappers set their differences aside to celebrate their mutual successes or… well

Meanwhile, Latto’s got another big performance coming up: This Saturday is the NCAA’s Super Saturday event in Cleveland ahead of the Women’s National Championship Game. She’s racking up accomplishments left and right, and with so many co-signs from legends in addition to her own penchant for supporting up-and-coming artists, they are all well-deserved.

Beyoncé’s cover of ‘Blackbird’ has fans praising Paul McCartney after learning its true meaning

Beyoncé released a new album recently and unless you’ve been asleep for the past few weeks, you’ve likely heard about it. While everyone knew she was going to make a more significant splash into the country music genre, the details of the album were scarce until it’s release. To many people’s surprise it wasn’t simply a country album, it was a genre bender that somehow seamlessly transitioned country, pop, R&B and rap all in one album, Cowboy Carter.

Country music legends like Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton made an appearance, with Parton introducing Beyoncé’s cover of her infamous song “Jolene.” While the spin on that country classic has the internet abuzz over the lyric changes that take the singer from begging to assertively telling Jolene to stay away, it’s “Blackbird” that many can’t get enough of.

“Blackbird” was originally written by Paul McCartney and sung by a little band he was in named The Beatles. Maybe you’ve heard of them. The song topped the charts in the 60s and will likely make its way to the charts again with Queen Bey’s cover of it. But it’s the meaning behind the song that has people talking.

The song was written at the height of the civil rights movement, and that 60s boy band from Britain never shied away from tackling social movements in their music. Fans of Bey’s version of “Blackbird” are just becoming aware of McCartney’s reason for writing the song in resurfaced interviews. The retired Beatle explains he wrote the song about seeing Black girls desegregate schools in the south, and more specifically, The Little Rock 9, a group of Black students that desegregated Little Rock Central High School.

The children brave enough to desegregate all white schools were met with verbal and physical violence. Ruby Bridges speaks about parents pulling their children from the classroom, leaving just her and the only teacher that would teach her.

McCartney reveals in the book, Many Years From Now, by Barry Miles, “I had in mind a Black woman, rather than a bird. Those were the days of the civil rights movement, which all of us cared passionately about, so this was really a song from me to a Black woman, experiencing these problems in the States: ‘Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith, there is hope.”

The revelation of the reason behind the song is evoking emotion and think pieces from Beyoncé fans. One woman shared a clip of the song along with the caption, “Beyonce does everything with such intention. Finding out that Paul McCartney wrote Blackbird to show support to Black women during the Civil Rights movement and Beyoncé decided to add Black country women to feature on the song.”

I already loved Blackbird, and this cover, but knowing this history makes it so much more meaningful, another user captioned her video.

One person wrote in the comments praises, “The Beatles get a lot of hate but they always stood on business! They refused to play segregated shows.”

Another commenter marvels, “Then to have 4 black female country singers trying to integrate into country music and also waiting for their moment to arise as to sing with her, layers on layers.”

Garrison Hayes gives a succinct breakdown of the song, the imagery and the civil rights movement all in one video, which you can watch below. If you were unaware of the original meaning of the song, now you know. One bonus that people continue to note is that it sounds like Beyoncé is singing over the original Beatles track.

@garrisonhayes

Oh, an excuse to talk about Beyoncé AND Black history?? Count me in. Paul McCartney’s inspiration for the song Blackbird was actually the images of “black girls” integrating schools across the American south during the civil rights era. More specifically, he was inspired by the images of the Little Rock 9 in Arkansas, being assaulted and jeered by an angry mob. Beyoncé’s rendition takes this idea of Black girls being free and pushes it to the next level.

PartyNextDoor’s NSFW ‘PartyNextDoor 4’ Cover Is Splits Fans Between Turned On And Grossed Out

partynextdoor

PartyNextDoor is a lot more low-key than his OVO Sound benefactor Drake, but like his fellow Torontonian, he knows how to get people talking. In this case, they are talking about the cover for his upcoming album, PartyNextDoor 4, which has fans split between turned on and grossed out with its NSFW photo.

The photo, which you can view on Party’s Instagram, depicts a nude woman on all fours (heh) from behind, insinuating that it was taken mid-coitus. Her lower back bears a “tramp stamp” tattoo with a number 4. While some fans are celebrating it as an indication of a fully unhinged, hedonistic album on the way, others think it’s so raunchy it has to be an April Fools’ joke.

Party announced the album’s upcoming release date after sharing a pair of singles, “Resentment” and “Real Woman.” The album is due on April 26, over four years since the release of his last album, Partymobile.

Party explained the long delay between albums in an interview with Billboard, ironically blaming it on romantic entanglements, the very thing that fuels his his music’s popularity. “I get into relationships and then music becomes second,” he explained, before vowing, “I think I’m going to take a break from relationships, a long break, and just get back to making music.”

PartyNextDoor is a Warner Music artist. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
