All The Best New Indie Music From This Week

Best New Indie
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Indie music has grown to include so much. It’s not just music that is released on independent labels, but speaks to an aesthetic that deviates from the norm and follows its own weirdo heart. It can come in the form of rock music, pop, or folk. In a sense, it says as much about the people that are drawn to it as it does about the people that make it.

Every week, Uproxx is rounding up the best new indie music from the past seven days. This week, we got new music from Dehd, Mandy, Indiana, Porches, and more.

While we’re at it, sign up for our newsletter to get the best new indie music delivered directly to your inbox, every Monday.

Mandy, Indiana – “Idea Is Best”

The debut album from Mandy, Indiana, I’ve Seen A Way, was easily one of the best records that came out last year. Ahead of their appearance at Coachella this past weekend (and this upcoming weekend), they’ve dropped the one-off single, “Idea Is Best.” Like the Manchester quartet’s proper full-length, their latest single is an industrial, clubby banger.

Gift – “Wish Me Away”

After forming right before the pandemic took hold of the entire globe, the New York five-piece Gift hunkered down to craft what would become their debut album, Momentary Presence. The group’s 2022 album mixed post-punk, kosmische, psych-rock, and dream-pop, and they’re further honing that sound with “Wish Me Away,” their new single and first for Captured Tracks. As TJ Freda’s vocals glide over hazy guitars and driving drums, you can only hope that Gift is more than a momentary presence themselves.

Caribou – “Honey”

There hasn’t been a new Caribou album since 2020’s Suddenly. Although its architect Dan Snaith released the wonderfully fun Cherry under his Daphni moniker in 2022, Caribou has been out of commission for a while. The Canadian electronic musician, however, has resuscitated the Caribou name for the bass-heavy, dancefloor-bound “Honey.” It’s a reminder of what Snaith does best: concocting absolute bangers.

Bonny Light Horseman – “I Know You Know”

Since their self-titled 2020 debut, Bonny Light Horseman have quickly established themselves within the folk canon. Their first record displayed their interpretations of folk staples, and 2022’s Rolling Golden Holy saw the trio write a suite of original material that stood alongside the traditional classics they covered on its predecessor. Now, Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman are on the cusp of their biggest statement yet: a double album. Keep Me On Your Mind/See You Free, their first for Jagjaguwar, captures a consistently great band at their zenith. On “I Know You Know,” Mitchell’s, Johnson’s, and Kaufman’s disparate voices coalesce into one. Like the best Bonny Light Horseman songs, their latest exudes the comfort of long-lasting companionship.

Porches – “Rag”

“Rag” starts off the way many Porches songs do: Aaron Maine’s distinct vocals, a thumping drum beat, melodic electric guitars. But then the chorus comes, and it becomes something else entirely. Maine channels rambunctious ‘90s alt-rock, waves of distortion and boisterous cymbal crashes overtaking the mix in the vein of the Pixies’ tried-and-true, quiet-loud formula. The end result is a fun new direction for the prolific indie-pop musician.

Dehd – “Alien”

Dehd are often at their best when Emily Kempf’s and Jason Balla’s voices interlock. On the chorus of “Alien,” their latest single, Kempf and Balla each sing their respective lines, the rhythms of each rising above or below the other. Even with Balla’s mellow guitars, Kempf’s gentle basslines, and Eric McGrady’s hushed drumming, the dual vocals in the refrain lend it a sense of urgency. It’s a pleasing contrast and a harmonious union all at once.

I. Jordan – “Round N Round”

I. Jordan has been in the UK dance scene for a full decade now, and while they’ve released EPs and singles at a consistent rate, they’re only just now about to share their quasi-eponymous, full-length debut. I Am Jordan is a distillation of Jordan’s signature styles and motifs: skeleton-rattling low-ends, pulsating house drums, and kinetic footwork BPMs. Their latest track, “Round N Round,” showcases the multidimensionality of Jordan’s artistry, how they’re capable of lighting up the dancefloor just as much as inducing thoughtful introspection.

Still House Plants – If I Don’t Make It, I Love U

On a Still House Plants song, everything is subject to change. The UK trio, with its shrewd blend of post-rock, slowcore, and noise rock, creates works that are never fully set in stone. Anything is liable to occur at any given moment, whether it’s the waves of guitars overtaking Jess Hickie-Kallenbach’s crooning vocals on “M M M” or David Kennedy’s light, subtle shifts in drum patterns over the course of “No Sleep Deep Risk.” And it’s that precise unpredictability that makes their new album, If I Don’t Make It, I Love U, so enthralling. It’s an exercise in musical malleability, demonstrating how even the slightest of changes can have seismic effects.

Sour Widows – “Cherish”

“Will you love me through this,” Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson sing in “Cherish,” the lead single of Sour Widows’ forthcoming debut album. Rounded out by bassist Timmy Stabler, the Bay Area indie rock trio follows up on their 2021 EP with Revival Of A Friend, out in late June. The nearly six-minute “Cherish” underlines the importance of supporting your loved ones even at their lowest moments. As Sinaiko’s and Thomson’s vocals intertwine, that sense of unconditional love becomes tangible.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross / Boyz Noize – Challengers (Mixed)

Alexander Ridha, the electronic producer who goes by Boyz Noize, was tapped by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross themselves to remix their score for Luca Guadagnino’s new film, Challengers. Featuring nine remixed tracks from the original score, Boyz Noize filters Reznor’s and Ross’ celestial strain of electronic composition through his own techno-centric milieu on the aptly titled Challengers (Mixed).

‘SNL’ Star Heidi Gardner Was ‘Shocked’ The First Time She Saw Ryan Gosling And Mikey Day As Beavis And Butt-Head

Heidi Gardner is only human. If she turns around and sees handsome goofball Ryan Gosling dressed up as Beavis from Beavis and Butt-head (as opposed to all the other Beavises out there), she’s going to laugh.

And not be able to stop laughing.

One of the highlights from SNL‘s viral “Beavis and Butt-Head” sketch, starring Gosling and Mikey Day as two fellows who bear a strong resemblance to the animated idiots, is Gardner’s inability to regain her giggly composure after she breaks. She discussed what happened during an interview with Vulture.

“Time moves so fast or so slow when you’re off the rails with something on the show,” she said. “I was thinking to myself, You need to recover from this. I had coached myself for so many years to not break. Being a perpetual people-pleaser rule follower, it was nice that I broke the rules — unintentionally, of course. I can’t help what I saw, but people were okay with it. Not only okay with it but encouraged it. That’s all the feedback I’ve gotten since.”

There was some thought online that Gardner saw Gosling and Day “in character” for the first time during the live show, but that’s not the case. “When I looked and saw Mikey in the dress rehearsal, I lost it. I was shocked. I’m thinking about it right now and laughing. I recovered and tried to tell myself in between dress and the live show, you can’t laugh like that again,” she explained. At least she wasn’t the only one: Gosling lost it, too.

Now imagine if Gardner turned around and she saw this:

You can watch the sketch above.

Jack Antonoff Is Heading To Broadway, As He’s Providing The Music For The New ‘Romeo + Juliet’ Show With Rachel Zegler

A new Romeo + Juliet adaptation is heading to Broadway this fall, with a star-studded cast to match. Rachel Zegler and Heartstopper‘s Kit Connor will play the two main characters after teasing the news on social media. Jack Antonoff will be making his Broadway debut as well — by making the music for it.

Not much else is known about the show yet, including a specific opening date. However, another adaptation of Romeo And Juliet opened recently on London’s West End, with Tom Holland as the lead — but the two are not connected it seems.

“Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy now belongs to a new generation on the edge,” the press release read, according to Variety. It’s also worth noting that Sam Gold will be directing the musical, following his run leading An Enemy Of The People starring Jeremy Strong — so there are high expectations.

“With the presidential election coming up in November, I felt like making a show this fall that celebrates youth and hope and unleashes the anger young people feel about the world they are inheriting,” Gold shared in a statement.

The outlet added that additional casting and a theater location for Romeo + Juliet will be unveiled at a later date.

For now, check out the official announcement of the upcoming Romeo + Juliet show opening on Broadway below.

Common’s Inexplicable Leather Jacket In ‘Silo’ Has Finally Received A Definitive Explanation

Silo Common
Apple TV+

“Why aren’t you watching Silo?”

It’s a valid question that has been posed by our own Jessica Toomer. The series should not only appeal to sci-fans and those who have gobbled up Hugh Howey’s Wool, Shift, and Dust but also those who adore Graham Yost’s (Justified) showrunning style. The impending second season has been filming for several months, so we should hear about a release date soon. What does matter is that Rebecca Ferguson has been teasing the “incredibly intense” and “wet” happenings to come (behave, people) after Juliette leaves the silo that she has always called home and then discovers more silos over the hill.

Ferguson recently sat down, along with Yost and co-stars Tim Robbins and Common, to drop more hints during a Deadline-hosted panel. And finally, we are really receiving an in-depth discussion about Common’s Inexplicable Leather Jacket in the series.

As silly as that sounds, this is a thing that has troubled not only viewers (because that leather jacket looks so out-of-the-ordinary alongside the functional clothing of the silo) but also readers, since Sims is not specified as wearing a leather jacket in the books. The issue has perplexed Redditors, who have not only asked, “Someone, anyone, please explain Sims’ jacket to me…” as well as “Where did Sims get a shiny new leather jacket?” but also, importantly, “Where’d my man find a whole ass cow?” Another Redditor admitted, “This has troubled a lot of us.”

The thing is, yes, there are cows in the self-sustaining silo, but the leather jacket still seems impractical, and Deadline’s Lynette Rice decided that Common should answer for this oddness. As Rice inquired, “He’s got the very cool outfit on, the leather… he oozes cool… why is that?”

Common’s first reaction: “I think just because I’m cool.” He then elaborated:

“No, just kidding… this was some of the best material I’ve ever read… and then I started to look at Sims… he could have just been a heavy, but they wrote him that he wasn’t just a heavy. He was fighting for something that he believed in, but he also had some dimensions to him. So I have to say [about] Sims’ style, I gotta give it up for Charlotte [Morris], who is our costume designer.” [Morris and Graham generated] “ideas with who Sims would be… and I just kinda put on the outfit and started to breathe it. I just did my inner work.”

And does he field this question on the street? Yes:

“People do ask me why am I the only one in the silo in a leather jacket, and how is my head, like, always shaved, every day, and I’m like clean cut, and everybody’s grimy and stuff. But like I said, Sims is kinda cool.”

There you have it. Silo‘s first season can currently be streamed on Apple TV+.

The Infamous Knicks Recruiting Video For LeBron Featuring A Sopranos Reunion Has Been Unearthed

In 2010, LeBron James became the most coveted free agent in NBA history to actually put his services on the open market. James rather famously allowed teams to try and recruit him as he was searching for the opportunity to win the first championship of his career.

Staying home in Cleveland was certainly on the table, but Miami, Chicago, and New York all loomed as significant suitors for James. The Knicks, many thought, were a frontrunner for LeBron, hoping he would finally be the superstar that chose New York. He ultimately chose to join the Miami Heat, winning two titles in four years, but the Knicks were unquestionably in play, as he and Dwyane Wade considered joining forces in the Garden.

In the 14 years since that summer, there have been rumors and rumblings about a pitch video the Knicks made for LeBron that featured a reunion from The Sopranos for James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, along with other New York luminaries trying to convince James to join the Knicks. Finally, that video has been found thanks to Pablo Torre on his show, Pablo Torre Finds Out, and he had Knicks fans Jason Concepcion and Rob Perez watch it with him in a very funny episode that can be viewed in full above.

The part most people will want to see is the Sopranos portion, which they clipped for Twitter and features Tony and Carmela in witness protection in New York City, trying to find Tony’s friend LeBron a new place.

This is, believe it or not, the high point of the pitch video, which has aged like milk with the likes of Donald Trump, Harvey Weinstein, and Rudy Giuliani all pitching LeBron on how great New York is. Spike Lee, Willis Reed, and Clyde Frazier don’t show up until close to the end of the 10-minute long video, and much of it looks like a mediocre New York Tourism advertisement rather than a star-studded free agency pitch. It’s a truly unbelievable video and LeBron choosing not to join the Knicks makes even more sense after watching it.

When Will Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ Stream On Max?

Civil War Nick Offerman President
A24

Alex Garland’s new movie, Civil War, has been racking up rave reviews and it just had A24’s biggest opening weekend ever. The film plunges audiences into a modern-day conflict on American soil as the states of Texas and California break off from the rest of the country to stop a tyrannical government.

While Civil War is best seen in a theater where the surround sound and giant screen puts you right in the middle of the action, sometimes you just want to watch a movie at home on your nice comfy couch. As for when Civil War will start streaming, we got you covered.

When Will Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ Stream On Max?

Considering Civil War just opened in theaters, the earliest it would arrive on Max is the end of summer. A24 re-upped its exclusive streaming deal with Max, so keeping a close eye on what’s been happening with The Iron Claw gives us the best guess on Civil War‘s release window. The A24 film starring Zac Efron hit theaters in late December, and it’s still not available for streaming on Max as of this writing. According to Forbes, it won’t arrive on the service until late April or early May, which is about a four-to-five month wait.

If Civil War follows a similar strategy to The Iron Claw, it won’t start streaming on Max until late August or early September. So, it’s going to be a bit.

However, The Iron Claw only had a 45-day release window before it was available to stream on VOD services like Apple TV+ or Prime Video. It’s too early to tell if that strategy will hold for other A24 releases, but if Love Lives Bleeding hits VOD in late April or early May, then the 45-day window is a safe bet. That means Civil War will be available on VOD in late May or early June.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.

Civil War is now playing in theaters.

‘Inside Out 2’: Everything To Know About The Pixar Sequel Including The New Emotions And Concept Art

inside out
pixar

Inside Out is one of Pixar’s most popular movies. It’s the studio’s second highest-grossing non-sequel ever and was nominated for two Oscars, including a win for Best Animated Feature. The film also has a strong theme park presence in Disneyland, the home of Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind and Bing Bong’s Sweet Stuff candy shop (love and miss you, Bing Bong).

It’s a favorite among child and adults alike. But what about moody, in-the-throes-of-puberty teenagers? Well, Inside Out 2 is for them — and about them. (Kids and adults will like it, too).

In the upcoming months, we’ll have a lot more on Inside Out 2, including an interview with the director and producer. But for now, here’s everything to know about the Pixar sequel, including plot details and the release date. Be sure to stick around to the end to see some adoringly animated concept art.

Plot

Inside Out ended with Riley accepting her new life in San Francisco and the emotions in her head — Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger — working together as a balanced unit. The sequel is set roughly a year later and catches up with Riley as a now-teenager who’s off to spend the summer at hockey camp. But then: puberty hits. Uh oh. Joy & Co’s harmonious way of doing things is upended by new emotions: Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment.

Will so many emotions be able to coexist in one teenage girl’s mind?

The Inside Out 2 team, including director Kelsey Mann, producer Mark Nielsen, and writer Meg LeFauve, felt it was a natural fit for Riley to enter adolescence in the sequel. “We read a lot of books and spoke with psychologists about what happens to the teenage brain — the expansion of their minds at that time,” explained Nielsen. “It became clear pretty quickly that there would be a lot of potential for entertainment with a new group of Emotions coming in and disrupting the core five that have just hit their stride in figuring out how to work together.” He added, “There are definitely more complex Emotions that come with being a teenager.” Anyone who was ever a jerk to their parents for no reason when they were 13 is silently nodding along.

I recently visited Pixar HQ in Emeryville, California, and watched the first 30 minutes of Inside Out 2. The sequel wastes no time in re-establishing the personality dynamics from the first film in clever ways, while successfully introducing the new characters — especially Anxiety. Maya Hawke, of Stranger Things fame, is perfect casting as personified worry.

“I’d zeroed in on the idea of Anxiety being a major character,” said Mann. “It’s something that really starts to appear as we become teenagers — we can all relate. I remember doing a lot of research early on about what happens in our brains at this age that triggered this idea of a wrecking ball coming through Headquarters — a bunch of workers piling in and tearing everything down. It’s a renovation — that’s kind of what it feels like to be a teenager. It’s chaotic.”

To make sure the chaos was accurate, a braintrust of actual-teenage girls, dubbed Riley’s Crew, was put together while developing Inside Out 2. They were all between the ages of 13 and 19, “and every four months we would show the movie to them and we would meet with them and have a notes session and get their thoughts on like the characters, Riley’s relationship with her friend group, what’s going on with them emotionally, and does that resonate?” explained Nielsen. Mann added, “That group was incredibly helpful. And man, did they give great notes. They gave sometimes greater, better notes than the people who work here. They were fantastic with it. They treated it like an assignment.”

Based on what I’ve seen, they understood the assignment.

Cast

Amy Poehler returns from the first movie as Joy, as does Phyllis Smith as Sadness, Lewis Black as Anger, and Diane Lane and Kyle MacLachlan as Riley’s parents (don’t worry, “hot dad” Mr. Andersen still has his mustache). Tony Hale and Liza Lapira replaced Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling as the new voices of Fear and Disgust, while Riley is now played by Kensington Tallman.

The new emotions are voiced by Maya Hawke (Anxiety), Ayo Edebiri (Envy), Adèle Exarchopoulos (Ennui), and Emmy winner/wrestler Paul Walter Hauser (Embarrassment). The rest of the cast includes Lilimar, Paula Pell, Yvette Nicole Brown, June Squibb, Pixar good luck charm John Ratzenberger, and in a very funny scene, Ron Funches as Bloofy and Yong Yea as Lance Slashblade.

Release Date

Inside Out 2 comes out on June 14.

Trailer

Inside Out 2 had the biggest animated trailer launch in Disney history with over 157 million views in its first 24 hours of release, including a whopping 78 million from TikTok (would you believe Anxiety is a hit on there?). That shatters the previous record set by Frozen 2 (116.4 million). “We are thrilled so many people have tuned in to check out the new trailer for Inside Out 2,” said Pete Docter, who directed the first Inside Out and is now Pixar’s chief creative officer. “When the first film came out, we knew that by telling a story where we could see our emotions — those little voices inside your head — there would be so much more to explore than we could possibly fit into one film.”

You can watch the trailer below.

All The Best New Pop Music From This Week

zayn sabrina carpenter dua lipa best new pop
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

This week saw the release of a ton of great new pop music. Dua Lipa is beating a man at his own game, as she shared her latest single from her summer-themed upcoming album. Sabrina Carpenter treated fans to another catchy pop anthem, just in time for her set at Coachella. Maggie Rogers and Girl In Red returned with brand new records. And so much more.

Check out the rest of Uproxx’s Best New Pop Music roundup below.

Dua Lipa — “Illusion”

Dua Lipa is preparing to lift our moods this summer with her Radical Optimism album. While it’s still a few weeks away, she dropped “Illusion” as the latest preview — a confident anthem that finds Lipa continuing to take charge of her love life, without letting any toxicity confuse her. “‘Illusion’ was the first song Caroline, Danny, Tobias, Kevin and I worked on together, and it really broke the ice for the record,” she shared. “It’s about knowing what you’re getting yourself into but staying for the hell of it. The joke’s on them, it’s the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won’t fall for an illusion.”

Sabrina Carpenter — “Espresso”

Just a few days before her Coachella set, Sabrina Carpenter had a fun new hit on her hands with “Espresso.” The catchy pop track plays on the ways Carpenter is pulling and maintaining an addictive relationship, complete with a surf-inspired music video. Of course, she added it to the performance in the Californian desert, giving the crowd just enough time to memorize the words.

Maggie Rogers — “If Now Was Then”

Maggie Rogers is back with her anticipated album, Don’t Forget Me. The record finds Rogers operating on a higher level of songwriting — on top of already being clearly talented in the field. One of the highlights is “If Now Was Then,” where she heads back to her old NYC stomping grounds and feels nostalgic seeing younger kids in the same places. Specifically, she remembers a past love and wishes she could go back in time to change things.

XG — “Undefeated”

“Ain’t no rivals, ain’t no rivals / They can try, but they’re never ever slowing me down / On arrival, this is my show / Crossing my heart, they know we are / Undefeated,” XG points out on their confident anthem about the girl group wrecking the competition — and showing off their skills in the process. If you’re looking for something to lift your spirits, this is it. The release is tied to the video game Valorant.

Zayn — “Alienated”

Zayn lets his vocals shine on center stage with his latest “Alienated” single, from his next album, Room Under The Stairs. Lyrically, it finds him struggling with the feeling of being alone — and allowing fans who feel the same to find comfort in it. “This is my favorite album that I’ve made to date, mainly because it comes from a place of sheer honesty and vulnerability,” Zayn shared. “I wanted each song to feel as if it was just me sitting beside you telling you how I feel, singing directly to you. It’s raw and stripped back and the type of music I always hoped to make.”

Peso Pluma, Arcángel — “PESO COMPLETO”

Peso Pluma performed his new “PESO COMPLETO” collab with Arcángel from the massive stage of none other than Coachella. The video taps into a wild level of extravagance, as the two are surrounded by bikini-clad women and lots of cash to show off. They even manage to fight some sumo wrestlers through it all.

Girl In Red — “I’m Back”

Girl In Red finally dropped her new I’m Doing It Again Baby! album, giving fans lots of jams to listen to this weekend. “I’m Back” opens the record, providing an update about the singer’s mental health — and how she is in a much better place. To set the tone for the rest of the project, it is a very hopeful and optimistic track.

Willow — “Bigfeelings”

After a string of singles over the past few months, Willow is teasing more of the new album that she has on the way with “Bigfeelings.” Ahead of Empathogen, she described that she wrote the vulnerable track “during a week where I was coming to terms with my own emotional patterns that I hadn’t known were there. Musically, it has a darkness and complexity that reflects what we all experience in our own minds. The song is about accepting those intense feelings that you have no idea what to do with.”

Suki Waterhouse — “My Fun”

Suki Waterhouse, who was also at Coachella over the weekend, recently released “My Fun” as part of a double single drop — her first few pieces of new music since welcoming her daughter. This track is all about feeling carefree, while also acknowledging a love that she’s found. “Love me like I love my fun,” Waterhouse adds in the chorus.

Hailey Orion — “Angry Woman”

About a month after Hailey Orion first released “Angry Woman,” she gave it another boost by dropping the lyric video for it. The moving song is about Orion finding and maintaining her inner strength, no matter who or what tries to knock her down. Although this release isn’t necessarily from this week, it’s still well worth checking out.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
