Is ‘The Fall Guy’ Movie Starring Ryan Gosling Based On A TV Show?

gosling fall guy
universal

Despite what Keanu Reeves may want you to believe, stunts are not for the faint of heart! It’s not an easy task to be thrown around like a sack of flour, but somebody’s gotta do it, and that somebody is normally a stunt guy.

Ryan Gosling plays the titular Fall Guy in The Fall Guy, the upcoming action flick co-starring Emily Blunt. Gosling’s The Fall Guy is based on the TV show of the same name that ran from 1981 to 1986 and followed Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stunt man who also worked part-time as a bounty hunter.

In the film, Gosling plays his own iteration of Colt, who is tasked with going after the leading man after he goes missing. All of that sounds cool and all, but the real story here is that The Fall Guy managed to break a record for the most amount of cannon rolls in a row.

Producer Kelly McCormack told Entertainment Weekly that the film is a “love letter” not only to the stunt guys of the ’80s, but Hollywood in general. “It’s a love letter to stunts. It’s a love letter to cinema. And it’s actually a love letter to crews who make cinema. Coming out of what we’ve experienced this year, this is the time to do it. It’s just this big love fest,” she said.

The Fall Guy slams into theaters after ricocheting off of a burning building on Friday, May 3. You can watch the trailer here.

Nothing Embodies Stagecoach In 2024 Better Than Post Malone

post_malone(1024x450)
Philip Cosores / Merle Cooper

Stagecoach Festival is a country music festival. Full stop. It’s not difficult to come to that conclusion, based on everything from the horse and boot iconography, the “Mane Stage,” the giant Yellowstone installation that takes over the entirety of Coachella’s Gobi Tent, and, of course, the attendees dressed in their finest denim, hats, and buckles.

However, the lineup might make an observer give pause. While the top of the bill has never strayed too far from its moniker as “Country music’s biggest party,” over the years, the rest of the lineup has evolved to the broadest definition of country imaginable. And we’re not just talking about Diplo, who has had his own stage for many years now for country fans who also want to dance. This year’s festival offered appearances from seemingly non-country acts like The Chainsmokers, Marshmello, The Beach Boys, Leon Bridges (Texas!), Wiz Khalifa, Nickelback, and, most importantly, Post Malone, although he did play a set of country covers.

If you don’t understand how all of this fits in at a country festival, you probably aren’t talking to people who would actually attend a country festival. Purely anecdotally, I didn’t need to leave my hotel room to get an impression of what the modern, young country fan is interested in. My neighbors, between the hits of the weekend’s headliners (Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert, and Eric Church), shuffled in songs by Jack Harlow and Kings Of Leon. For many, country music’s appeal is as much about the good-time vibes and broad emotional signifiers as it is about region, politics, and arrangements. And while some older generations might be put off by this, the change feels similar to Coachella’s evolution, where both are trying to reach a younger audience on their own terms.

Philip Cosores

Post Malone, one of contemporary music’s most loveable stars, embodies this perfectly. Though he first emerged through the world of SoundCloud rap, Posty has proven to be good at most things he tries. His own original music has veered into a genreless mélange that reflects the omnivorous tastes of many young music fans, while he’s proven to be adept at everything from Nirvana covers to acting. As a proud Texan, it’s not surprising that he would also slay as a country cover band, curating a set of radio hits that felt like a rowdy bar with a great house band or jukebox.

Sure, the weight of Beyoncé rumors might have been too heavy for some to fully enjoy the set. But, bringing out guests like Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, and Dwight Yoakam helped bridge any divide that might have been caused by booking the same guy that headlined the area’s Rolling Loud edition just a month earlier. Posty sounded great, but more importantly, he seemed to be having the time of his life. And, likewise, so did the audience, dancing with partners to the songs of George Strait, Alan Jackson, and Vince Gill.

Philip Cosores

In fact, maybe most surprising was that the weekend’s other breakout star, Jelly Roll, didn’t pop out at some point. Lord knows Jelly couldn’t resist several other surprise appearances, including slots with Willie Nelson, Ernest, and Nickelback. Jelly Roll also has a hip-hop background and face tattoos, and signifies that artist’s of Posty’s ilk can find success in the genre that likely would not have welcomed them a decade ago. But these days, the name of the game is less about tradition and more about having a good time with friends. This was best represented by simply walking across the polo field ahead of Ernest’s set, when “Sweet Caroline” blasted from every speaker. Everywhere you looked, you could see people singing along unabashedly, not worrying about looking cool. It’s a moment that would never happen at Coachella or Governors Ball, not because the reaction would be different, but because of what those festivals represent.

Stagecoach is not about representing an ethos these days, but about showing people a good time in any way that they’ll respond to. And if that could be summed up in a single artist, Post Malone fits the bill better than anyone.

Stephen A. Smith Claims Devin Booker Wants To Join The Knicks Even Though ‘I Haven’t Spoken To Him’

The Phoenix Suns are about to enter quite the offseason. After getting swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, Phoenix has to figure out how to navigate a situation where they have a crazy amount of money tied up in three players (Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant) and next to no draft capital that can be used to improve the roster. For a team that entered the year with hopes of winning a championship, this is just about the worst-case scenario.

Finding a solution is going to be very difficult, so naturally, folks are going to hop onto the trade machine and try to throw together deals involving their stars. And on Monday’s edition of First Take, noted Knicks fan Stephen A. Smith indicated that he’s heard that Booker has his eyes on a move to New York, although it comes with a major caveat: He has not discussed this with Booker.

“From what I’m being told, I don’t know if it’ll ever happen, Devin Booker wants to be in New York,” Smith claimed. “That’s what I’m being told. That’s what I’m being told. Now, he might deny it. I haven’t spoken to him. I’m just telling you, the scuttlebutt in the NBA circles is that brother wanna be in New York. So, if you’re Phoenix you got at least two people, probably three, who are all getting paid about $150 million combined, don’t wanna be there.”

Emotions are always high after a playoff exit, particularly a high-profile one, but it’s again worth mentioning that Smith concedes he hasn’t talked about this with Booker. And after Sunday night’s loss that marked an end to their season, Booker’s comments to the media sure made it sound like he’s ready to run things back in Phoenix.

“Hopefully everybody is feeling the same type of hurt,” Booker said, per Baxter Holmes of ESPN. “I have to be better. Kevin has to be better. Brad has to be better. Coach has to be better. We’re the leaders of the team. We can’t be out there unprepared.”

Blue Ivy Carter And Beyoncé Will Bring Their Mother-Daughter Dynamic To ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,’ A New Trailer Reveals

Blue Ivy Carter held her own as a dancer on Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, and she must have really enjoyed working with her mom — who wouldn’t when your mom is Beyoncé? — because the two are joining forces again for the Barry Jenkins-directed Mufasa: The Lion King.

The 90-second trailer released on Monday morning, April 29, featuring Beyoncé voicing Nala and 12-year-old Blue Ivy is voicing a brand-new character, Kiara, Nala and Simba’s daughter. According to the YouTube description, the prequel movie centers on Rafiki “to relay the legend of Mufasa” to Kiara, “with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick.” Donald Glover reprises his voiceover role of Simba, and Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa.

“A buddy of mine, Matthew Cherry, made the short film called Hair Love that Blue Ivy did the audio book of,” Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly. “Starting this project and just having that in the ether, I was like, ‘Is it worth a shot? Would Blue Ivy want to do it? Would Beyoncé want to act opposite her daughter? Is it too close to home?’ But once we put the question to them, they both responded with enthusiasm.”

Jenkins added, “What’s crazy is we made the film, and then the Renaissance tour happened, and I think Blue really grew up over the course of that tour. So the Blue Ivy you see in this film, it’s like a time capsule, this very, very, very young stage of her life, and she got to share it with her mom. So, I thought there was some synergy. It could be beautiful.”

Metro Boomin Called Out A Fan For Quoting Drake’s Diss Track At A Recent Show

Hip-hop fans have been having a field day with the ongoing feud between Drake and seemingly the entire rap world. Including Kendrick Lamar, ASAP Rocky, and more, the war was prompted by Metro Boomin and Future’s two collaborative albums, We Don’t Trust You, and We Still Don’t Trust You. And just like in Drake’s feud with Pusha T some years back, his fans have come to his defense at his rivals’ live shows.

In a video going viral on social media, Metro overhears a fan yelling out lyrics from “Push-Ups,” the diss track Drake dropped in response to the producer’s provocations. The fan shouted the line, “Metro, shut your ho ass up and play some drums,” between songs, to which the producer replied, “I heard that.” The fan can be seen jumping up and down in celebration:

It’s not the first time Metro has been trolled by the “Push-Ups” line. Shortly after releasing the song, Drake hired a drumline to play outside famed Atlanta club Magic City, sending a video of them playing to Metro via his (public) Instagram Story.

Metro is going to have plenty of time to work on his responses to future incidents, as he and Future are gearing up to go on their We Trust You tour beginning in July.

When Will ‘Challengers’ Be On Streaming?

Challengers
Amazon/MGM

When will the sexiest movie of 2024 be available on streaming? It’s going to be awhile. Challengers, director Luca Guadagnino’s critically-acclaimed tennis movie starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor, finally opened in theaters on Friday and made $15 million over the weekend at the box office. That’s a solid debut for an original R-rated drama, one that should continue to do well thanks to strong word-of-mouth buzz (and a killer score).

Challengers was distributed in the United States by Amazon MGM Studios, and it will eventually wind up on Prime Video. But as of now, there’s no streaming debut date. But once it’s on there, likely some time during the summer, something tells me one scene will be watched more than any other.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

From visionary filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor) — his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win?

Challengers is out in theaters now.

What Are The Must-See Shows For May 2024?

bridgerton-s3-2
Liam Daniel/Netflix

Last month’s chaotic TV vibes came in with a Walton Goggins/Timothy Olyphant reunion photo and out with Goggins minus a nose as The Ghoul on Amazon’s Fallout. He’s come a long way since The Shield, but while Goggins (who is seemingly everywhere on TV these days) ducks down in Thailand to film The White Lotus, a smattering of other series will arrive to distract us.

Now, get ready for something completely different. A neo-Western sci-fi series, some Star Wars action, lust-filled vampires, and too many corsets will take us through the month.

Here are the must-see shows for May in order of appearance.

Hacks: Season 3 (Netflix series streaming 5/1)

Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder’s push-pull dynamic takes on new shades this season, and they’ve never been better together as Deborah and Ava. The power struggle isn’t quite over, but that’s part of the appeal, as is the sexier aura of this season. The show also dives deeper into the soul of The Comedian, which isn’t always pretty but is consistently entertaining and breezy as hell. Oh, and Vegas also returns as a character while the show’s supporting actors continue to charm the hell out of the audience. Win win win win.

Tales of the Empire: Season 1 (Disney+ series streaming 5/4)

The Mandalorian and Ahsoka crowd will want to pencil in this series that follows antagonist Morgan Elsbeth, who will be pushing forth with a plan for vengeance. Additionally, ex-Jedi Barriss Offee will be adjusting to change, and General Grevious will let his freak flag fly (in as chaste a way as possible).

Dark Matter: Season 1 (Apple TV+ series streaming 5/8)

Jennifer Connelly and Joel Egerton star in this trippy series (and Apple TV+ is currently the master at these stories) about a man who is kidnapped and somehow ends up in an alternate reality. Not only is this development (adapted from a Black Crouch novel) an inconvenient pain in the butt, but he’s apparently got to fight the villainous form of himself who wishes to destroy his family. Not ideal.

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School (Max series streaming 5/9)

The cast of the Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin series returns for this new season, which puts them into an even deeper hell: being required to wake up every weekday morning on summer break for school. The Archie-Verse series is also (of course) tied to the original Pretty Little Liars, and as these characters are once again terrorized, we can expect more easter eggs and official connections to make themselves known.

The Chi: Season 6 Part 2 (Showtime series streaming on Paramount+ 5/10)

The Showtime series plans to test every character with nobody immune from becoming collateral damage. Thus far this season, risks and rewards are juxtaposed with relationships and loyalties tested. Business ventures and partnerships will likewise bleed into other parts of life, and in the end, all-out war will break out on the South Side of Chicago.

Interview With the Vampire: Season 2 (AMC+ series streaming 5/12)

Get ready for this show to dive away from the movie’s origin story of Armand in a WTF way, but we shouldn’t expect strict continuity in a series where Louis the vampire lives in sunny Dubai. Additionally, both Louis and Claudia must reckon with what has been done to ultimate toxic undead-guy Lestat de Lioncourt, but hopefully, the campy aspect of this series will keep itself alive even if Lestat is looking like hell (and Louis will likely still be unable to resist him). Also, let’s hear some Guns ‘n’ Roses sometime soon?

Bridgerton: Season 3 Part 1 (Netflix series streaming 5/16)

Colin Bridgerton will now take his turn in the spotlight after breaking Penelope Featherington’s heart and now offering to help her choose a suitable suitor. This series has thus far remained largely faithful to Julia Quinn’s novel series, so you probably know how this will turn out for the long-term friends. The Lady Whistledown moonlighting escapades might lend enough spice to keep things slightly unpredictable, however. Also, newlyweds Kate and Anthony can still get it (with each other).

Outer Range: Season 2 (Amazon Prime series streaming 5/16)

Now that Josh Brolin’s Royal Abbott has put his true “time traveler” identity out there, get ready for this neo-Western series to lean even harder into its sci-fi trappings. As viewers recall, the reappearance of “the void” coincided with the arrival of the mysterious Autumn (Imogen Poots), and the chess (and poker) game that followed kept everyone on their toes. Before that season ended, another family member dove into the hole, and Autumn’s true identity is now under the microscope. Will Cecilia really put up with all this BS? Who knows, but she might push Royal right back where he came from.
