Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
The life of a touring artist isn’t for the weak. As most fans and musicians are aware, artistic preservation demands a break from time to time to make space for re-centering, writing, and relaxing. With that, it only made sense when globally recognized Americana and world folk ensemble Rising Appalachia announced that they’d be taking a creative sabbatical from the road to work on new music.
With several weeks into their global travel rest, frontwomen sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith have announced their upcoming album, Folk and Anchor. The project will see the group release an all-new collection of thoughtful reimaginings of cover songs spanning the likes of Bob Dylan, James Blake, Erykah Badu, Beyonce, and beyond. Due out May 17th, Folk and Anchor will showcase the group’s eclectic style, inviting old and new listeners into a rich musical journey.
“We grew up immersed in a musical family, and our songwriting and performance has been deeply influenced by so many Americana genres over the years,” says Leah Song.
“We wanted to create a body of work where all those influences could be showcased under one roof…As folk musicians, we have always been inspired by public music that is not our own. Along with songwriting, we have always played tunes and traditionals from Appalachia, Ireland, and beyond. With this album we were inspired to branch out and do our spin on some different styles of music, ranging from pop to folk to soul. The artists we chose to cover are both contemporary favorites as well as people we grew up listening to and adoring. It has been a treat to sit back in Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC and work on these renditions of beloved songs.”
With a month out from the full album release, Rising Appalachia has released the first single, “The Bones.” Originally recorded by Maren Morris and Hozier, the new single is accompanied by a music video that sees the group harmonizing in their hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.
As Leah and Chloe continue settling into their artistic rest in the mountains of Asheville, they have compiled a personal travel guide to this little Appalachian city. From breweries to mountain hikes, scroll down to see personal recommendations ahead of the group’s Summer Solstice Soiree at Salvage Station on June 8th. Tickets and additional information can be found here.
Best Place To Caffeinate In The Morning: Dobra TeaHouse
We love Dobra TeaHouse for its ambiance and tucked away coziness. Their tea selection is divine and worldly and the cafe is a perfect place to quietly reflect or work on a project with a warm mug of herbal sweetness. Try the Shakti-tea!
How To Spend A Proper Afternoon in Asheville: Our Favorite Independent Bookstores
We are usually out and about in the woods around these mountains more than in town, foraging or cold plunging or taking in the splendor of birdsong in the green hills. For town we can get lost in Malaprops Bookstore for hours on end in literary bliss, perusing their immaculate selections of fiction novels or how-to books. We are big supporters of independent bookstores. Firestorm is also an amazing one over in West Asheville.
Best Place To Grab A Bite To Eat: Zambra
Zambra is our go to. Incredible tapas, underground aesthetic, low lit and romantic, great wine selection. We also love Benne on Eagle for its incredible brunch menu.
Best Brewery In The 828: The Wedge
The Wedge! Always and forever old school. We love them because they are the original brewery in Asheville. The iron work around the brewery is incredible and the river arts district is steezy and pleasing on the eye for an artist.
Favorite Hiking Trails: Craggy Gardens/Shining Rock
We are sneaky about this and won’t share our favorite so as to keep the trails we love quiet…however…some more well known ones we love are Craggy Gardens during the autumnal season and the hike up to Shining Rock via the Art Loeb trail. There are so many great trails in every direction of this mountain region. What a treasure to spend a day in the woods.
Best Place To See Live Music: Salvage Station
Salvage Station for outdoor live music…kudos to our sound engineer Scarekrow that runs sound there. It’s right on the river which is a sweet spot to listen to music in town. They have ample parking and it’s an old salvage yard so it’s rustic and charming. We also love the Grey Eagle for more intimate shows. They are a staple of the Asheville music scene and have been for many years, so it’s important to support businesses who have been here for a long time amidst the insane growth of this town. Lastly, the LEAF Festival is a gem of a music and arts event here and we have been going since we were babies.
What Do You Want People To Know About Asheville?
We recommend Asheville city council and residents to help this town grow smart and not fast. With so many people moving to the area, there is a high need for bike lanes, affordable housing, and water management to name a few. There are tons of good people working on these agendas locally so get involved if you love living in this town!

The first reviews for Challengers are being served, and the critics are absolutely enthralled by the new film from director Luca Guadagnino thanks in no small part to Zendaya.
Based on the reviews, Zendaya thrills in her first proper lead role that wildly combines the world of tennis and a hot and sexy love triangle that spans years. If you’ve been bored of Hollywood’s seemingly puritanical turn as of late, Challengers flies directly in the face of that trend and continues Guadagnino’s track record for delivering horny cinematic delights.
Zendaya is the linchpin. Her work here, on the heels of Dune: Part Two, cements her status as a born Movie Star. She moves with the decisive ferocity of a warrior on the court and the floating grace of a ballerina elsewhere. (The use of slo-mo is ravishing.) Holding closeups with the effortless command of an old-school screen siren, Zendaya registers every coolly assessing glance, every flicker of apprehension, every darkening moment of disappointment or anger while seldom surrendering Tashi’s composure, even in the rare moments when her control falters.
Each member of Challengers’ core threesome is down to get dirty. Zendaya, in her first proper leading role in a film, is the best she’s ever been, free from insipid Marvel scripts, Dune’s nonsensicality, and Euphoria’s melodramatic histrionics. Here, she can operate with more subtlety, and it’s a joy to watch what she can do with all of Tashi’s power. It is, however, Mike Faist and particularly Josh O’Connor—whose charisma and sex appeal will leave knees weak on the way out of the theater—who command most of the film. While Challengers is very much about sex and desire, it’s just as much about the intensity that two men can have with one another.
Another filmmaker might have subtracted himself in order to foreground the story, whereas Guadagnino goes big, leading with style (and a trendy score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). In keeping with the athletic theme, he does all kinds of wild things with the camera, including a composition framed from the umpire’s perspective mid-court that zooms along the net to find Tashi in the crowd. Occasionally, she and other characters smack the fluorescent yellow balls directly at the screen, making us flinch in our seats. By the end, “Challengers” has assumed the ball’s POV — or maybe it’s the racket’s — as Guadagnino immerses audiences in the film’s climactic match.
Challengers is a far cry from Wimbledon, and Guadagnino couldn’t give less of a shit about who comes out on top at the end. On the contrary, the “Call Me by Your Name” director was likely turned on by the sensual backspin of Justin Kuritzkes’ script, which subverts the typical stakes of each match in order to focus on the animating thrill of wanting something with every flooded sweat gland on your body.
In modern studio movies, as R.S. Benedict put it, everyone is beautiful and no one is horny. All of which makes Luca Guadagnino’s sweaty, panting sports-and-sex romantic drama Challengers feel like a thumbed nose (or a raised middle finger) aimed at American Puritanism and an increasingly sex-negative culture. Challengers is a sharp and snappy movie, full of big emotions expressed through fast-paced dialogue in some scenes and through silent, sensual physicality in others, all shot with creative verve and aggressively in-your-face energy. Everyone in this movie is chasing sex and success, and conflating those things with each other in unashamedly provocative ways.
Zendaya, O’Connor, and Faist play off each other charmingly, particularly in the flashbacks when their characters are younger. Those scenes are lively and jocular and the three actors bring into them combustible chemistry. In one long seduction scene, Guadagnino and his three actors manage the kind of long, sexy kiss that hasn’t been seen on screen since Alfred Hitchcock prolonged Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck’s kisses to satisfy the censors in Notorious.
Zendaya’s Tashi is an intimidating presence, both on and off the court. She navigates her role with a compelling mix of strength and sophistication, and portraying Tashi as a catalyst in Art and Patrick’s lives giving her the role of attractor, antagonist and trickster. Her performance is physically convincing and emotionally resonant, highlighting her character’s strategic mind and complex emotions. O’Connor and Faist bring a palpable chemistry that transcends simple rivalry, suggesting a deeper, almost symbiotic relationship shaped by years of friendship and competition. Their interactions encapsulate the film’s central premise that love and rivalry are not mutually exclusive but are instead two sides of the same coin.
Challengers opens in theaters on April 26. You can watch the trailer below.
Civil War, the latest film from Ex Machina and Annihilation director Alex Garland, has a reported $50 million budget. That makes it A24’s most expensive movie ever, besting Beau Is Afraid‘s $35 million budget. The Ari Aster film didn’t do great at the box office (even though it’s a very good, at times great film), but Civil War is off to a strong start.
Civil War earned $2.9 million in Thursday previews. It’s expected to finish the weekend around $20 million, although, according to Variety, “some estimates are as high as $24 million and as low as $15 million, but even that would break the A24 record.” The current record-holder is Hereditary with $13.6 million.
An opening in the upper range could also unseat Warner Bros.’ Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, which has been No. 1 for the past two weeks at the box office.
Godzilla and Kong have nothing on Jesse Plemons.
Here’s the official plot synopsis: “From filmmaker Alex Garland comes a journey across a dystopian future America, following a team of military-embedded journalists as they race against time to reach DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House.”
Civil War, which stars Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and Nick Offerman, is out in theaters (and IMAX screens) now.
Drake’s got some “F*ckin’ Problems” lately. His most immediate appears to be that half the rappers who appeared with him on that song in 2013 seem to hate him now — or at least, that’s rap kayfabe these days. Drake’s feud with Kendrick has turned into a full-blown ambush, with ASAP Rocky and The Weeknd joining the festivities on Future and Metro Boomin’s new album We Still Don’t Trust You. Drake’s the Toranaga of hip-hop’s version of Shogun and at this point, it looks like Future is Kazunari, leading the rest of the regents against him.
However, unlike the Japanese feudal lord in that show, it could be argued that Drake’s brought a lot of this on himself. For instance, ASAP Rocky probably wouldn’t have thrown shots in his “Show My Hands” verse had Drake left well enough alone on his most recent album, For All The Dogs. In multiple songs — “Fear Of Heights,” “Virginia Beach,” and “Another Late Night” — he makes subtle references to his prior relationship with Rihanna and drops digs at Rocky for ending up with her in the end. Rihanna and Rocky share two children together and have been rumored to be either engaged or married for the past year. Drake also seemingly alluded to Rihanna during his tour for the album earlier this year.
On “Fear Of Heights,” Drake sings, “Why they make it sound like I’m still hung up on you? / That could never be / Gyal can’t ruin me / Better him than me / Better it’s not me / I’m anti, I’m anti / Yeah, and the sex was average with you / Yeah, I’m anti ’cause I had it with you / Okay, I’m auntie like your daddy sister / Auntie like a family picture / And I had way badder b*tches than you, TBH / Yeah, that man, he still with you, he can’t leave you / Y’all go on vacation, I bet it’s Antilles.” Which… come on, man. Do better.
It was all good just a couple of years ago, too. Drake was popping out at ASAP Rocky’s shows in 2019 and gifting him $150k chains in 2020. However, after Rihanna and Rocky went public with their relationship in 2022, Drake unfollowed the pair on Instagram, passive-aggressive millennials’ official signal that “we can’t be friends.” And Drake is nothing if not passive-aggressive.
Rocky appeared to hit back at Drake earlier this year as well, with fans interpreting lines from his verse on Kid Cudi’s album as shots at the Canadian certified lover boy. If 2 Chainz comes out of the woodwork to smoke his “No Lie” collaborator too, Drake’s going to need an intervention. Maybe Post Malone or somebody can be his John Blackthorne.
Even though everyone knew that Ryan Gosling would parade around the Oscars stage as Ken, he had to at least pretend that he wasn’t going to do it. After Barbie was the biggest movie of 2023, the era needed to be bookended by one powerful performance, though Gosling claims he was hesitant to take on the task, initially giving them a “100% no” when asked.
“There’s a lot of ways that could go wrong,” Gosling told host Jimmy Fallon during Thursday’s episode of The Tonight Show. Gosling is set to host Saturday Night Live this weekend ahead of his latest action flick The Fall Guy.
But who cares about that, let’s talk about Ken.
Gosling was allegedly nervous about receiving bad reviews for his number. “Imagine the reviews I would have had if I’d have The Roots,” Gosling joked, referring to Fallon’s in-house band. Fortunately, Gosling did end up performing and received glowing reviews, particularly from your friends at Uproxx:
(Ryan really liked that one.)
Surprisingly, not everyone loves his goofball antics. When asked about his daughter’s reaction to the performance, he joked that they don’t really care. “Dad’s Kenning again,” he said. “I mean it was their interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken that sort of started all of this.” Gosling previously mentioned that his daughters haven’t even watched the film and likely won’t. Who really wants to see their dad Kenning all the time? Not all kids could handle seeing their father like that. Except maybe Francesca Scorsese.
The Preferred Parking for Coachella 2024 can be accessed by Ave 49 or Monroe St. — but NOT Hjorth St. Once you’re parked, take a photo or drop a pin and enter the festival through the north entrance. No parking entry will be allowed after 10pm and the lot’s open from 11am to 2am each day of the festival. If your car is still there after that, it might get towed, so don’t try to park overnight. Parking attendants will be checking wristbands for entry, so make sure everybody in your car is wearing one. There are no vehicle in-and-outs, so dropping off and picking up should be done at the appropriate lot (2A Camping Companion Parking). The nearest charging stations are at Walgreens (for Level 2) and Torre Nissan (Fast Charging), so make sure to fill that battery before you park.
As a bonus to encourage carpooling, if your car has four or more people and is decorated for CARPOOLCHELLA, you could even win free VIP for life! Click here for more information.
Captain America: Brave New World made a big splash at CinemaCon as Marvel started building the hype machine for the fourth Captain America film, which will see Anthony Mackie fully embracing his role as the iconic character.
Brave New World will also see Harrison Ford make his Marvel debut as a hard-punching United States president, who’s hoping to see Mackie’s Sam Wilson live up to the mantle of Captain America as a new threat emerges.
Here’s everything we know:
Plot
Thanks to a recent appearance by Marvel Studios at CinemaCon 2024, we now have a little bit of an idea on what to expect from Captain America: Brave New World. Picking up after The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson has now fully risen to the challenge of becoming the new Cap after Steve Rogers gave him his shield in the final moments of Avengers: Endgame. However, Sam already has his work cut out for him. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford) is now the President of the United States, and instead of an adversarial relationship, Ross is trusting Sam with the biggest task of them all: Forming a new Avengers team.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Brave New World will once again head heavily into the espionage world, but Mackie promises the film will be “10 times bigger” than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
“This movie is a clear reset. It really reestablishes the idea of what this universe is and what this universe is going to be,” Mackie said. “I think with these movies, you’re getting a clear, new branding of what Marvel is headed towards the same way they did with Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”
Perhaps most importantly, Brave New World will give Mackie a chance to seek revenge on Tom Holland, who mocked his Marvel co-star for not having his own film.
“I’m going to make sure that Marvel makes him come to the premiere, and then I’m going to sit him next to me, and I’m going to watch him watch the movie,” Mackie joked to EW.
Cast
Captain America: Brave New World will see Anthony Mackie reprise his role as Sam Wilson, who officially assumed the mantle of Captain America during the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Disney+ series also introduced Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), who became a new version of the Falcon in the comics and will do the same in the film. Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) will also appear in Brave New World after being revealed as the first successful recipient of the super-soldier serum in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
From there, Brave New World leans surprisingly heavy into the world of the Hulk. Harrison Ford will officially take over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following the passing of Willam Hurt. Liv Tyler will also make her MCU return by reprising the role of Betty Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson will finally get a chance to play The Leader after his transformation into the classic villain was teed up all the way back in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
Release Date
Captain America: Brave New World was originally set to hit theaters on May 3, 2024 before the SAG-AFTRA strike delayed the film to July 26, 2024. However, shortly after the strike ended, Brave New World saw its release date get pushed back even further as Marvel added a new writer to the film and scheduled a round of reshoots for Spring 2024.
Captain America: Brave New World is now set to land in theaters on February 14, 2025.
Trailer
There is no trailer for Captain America: Brave New World as of this writing. However, Marvel did share a batch of First Look photos with Entertainment Weekly on the heels of the studio’s 2024 CinemaCon presentation.
Coachella 2024 starts today! With a headlining crew consisting of Doja Cat, Lana Del Rey, No Doubt, and Tyler The Creator, and the recent addition of Vampire Weekend, there are plenty of reasons to be excited for the fest, even as the splintering of music scenes may have inspired more than a few “who is thats” when the flyer was revealed.
If you are headed to the California desert this weekend, you can check out Uproxx’s packing guide here, set times here, and confirm the concert start time for today here. If you plan on ridesharing from your hotel, we’ve got that information below.
According to Coachella’s website, the rideshare stand will operate at Ave. 49 and Monroe St. from 11am to 3am Friday through Sunday (or Monday, I guess, if you’re a late leaver). There will be a yellow path to and from the festival, with shade and phone charging at the stand. Coachella’s site wisely warns that the highest wait times will be right around the end of the show each night at 12am to 2:30am when the bulk of the crowd starts to leave. (But seriously, you shouldn’t plan on missing those headliners’ shows; check out our reviews of Doja Cat and Tyler The Creator’s tour concerts here and here, respectively).
Sure, your home theater is tricked out, has a “pause” button, and has no line to the bathroom, but does it have those novelty popcorn buckets? Nope, those are an in-person treat only, which is only a solitary reason why Mean Girls and Beyoncé’s Renaissance viewers headed to make fetch happen in multiplexes. Whereas the Dune: Part Twodisgusting sandworm bucket nearly stole the show and inspired an SNL skit about getting more bang for your buck in the lost-virginity realm.
Well, you (allegedly) ain’t seen nothing yet. At this week’s CinemaCon, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige teased the heck out of the next MCU Phase, which we’ll unofficially refer to as “Deadpool’s R-Rated Ass Revives The MCU.” That’s the hope, at at any rate, and although there was no sneak peek at the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine popcorn bucket, Feige revealed that there will be such a thing, from which overly salty, buttered goodness shall spring. What will this collector’s item look like? It will be disgusting, of course.
Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier duly reported that “[w]hile some are unintentionally gross, this one will be intentionally gross. #CinemaCon”
Feige confirms that there will be a Deadpool 3 popcorn bucket. And that while some are unintentionally gross, this one will be intentionally gross. #CinemaCon
And ComicBook’s Brandon Davis echoed the sentiment while adding, “Deadpool & Wolverine is getting a popcorn bucket which will be intentionally crude and lewd. #CinemaCon”
As for an actual peek? Nobody is showing the trinket off yet, but we can only assume that this could be a variant on Deadpool’s Bea Arthur fixation or the first-movie sex montage. Perhaps something suggestive with a chimichanga. There gross possibilities are truly endless, but we won’t have to wait too long to find out the details.
Deadpool & Wolverine arrives on July 26.
