SNX: The Week’s Best Sneakers Featuring The Kobe 6 Protro Italian Camo, Joe Freshgoods’ Latest & More

SNX
Uproxx

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet. Spring has been a weird season for this year in sneakers. We’ve had an inconsistent number of drops since the season started, mostly dominated by Nike. Today, we’re happy to report that this week we’re finally getting big drops from some of the other brands.

Sure, Nike is still taking up most of the spots… but what do you expect on a week where the brand is dropping not one, not two, but three (!) Kobe Protros?

We called it at the end of last year, 2024 shall be the year of the Kobe Protro resurgence, and we welcome it with open arms. Or, you know, open wallets. Anyway, we’ve got a lot to get to, here are this week’s best sneaker drops and where to find them.

Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 1000 When Things Were Pure (Pink/Black)

SNX
Joe Freshgoods

Price: $170

Beloved Chicago designer Joe Freshgoods is back with a new NB collaboration, and like JF x NB collaborations tend to be, this one is kind of a big deal. Unless you don’t consider the return of the New Balance 1000 silhouette a big deal, in which case we’d like to know — what’s wrong with you? All of the best New Balance silhouettes in rotation right now are forgotten classics, so we’re fully expecting the 1000 to follow the same trajectory as the 550.

Mostly because it looks way cooler (no shade to 550 fans).

The New Balance 1000 is built from a mix of open-mesh at the upper with iridescent leather overlays, embroidered details at the heel, reflective 3M foxing, and lace webbing. As is the case with all Joe Freshgoods drops, there is a deep story behind this collection. The name, “When Things Were Pure,” points to the early days of the new millennium when basement parties were the “epicenter of culture” and rap videos served as “our textbooks,” aka (apparently) “when things were pure.”

I always love a deep concept so I don’t have anything negative to say here! The sneaker drops in two colorways, a copper-toned black rendition, and a bright shimmering pink and white.

The Joe Freshgoods x New Balance 100 When Things Were Pure collection is set to drop on April 12 at the Joe Freshgoods webstore.

Women’s Air Jordan 1 High OG Chrome

SNX
Nike

Price: $180

So did Nike intend to drop this one on New Year’s Eve weekend but forgot? This shimmering high-top Jordan 1 demands attention thanks to its cracked Metallic Silver leather upper. The entire upper, including the swoosh, is dipped in this one color with a white tongue, midsole, and laces for some contrast. The sneaker rides atop a translucent outsole and has a plated wing logo for an extra little dose of flash.

The Women’s Air Jordan 1 High OG Chrome is out now for a retail price of $180. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

The sneaker features a smoothed-out patent leather upper with full textile lining, lace tassels, and a chunky jagged outsole. It’s equal parts sneaker and dress shoe.

Air Jordan 5 SE Sail

SNX
Nike

Price: $210

So clean that it almost sparkles! The Jordan 5 SE Sail is a must-pick-up if you’re a Jordan head. Here you’ve got a smooth luxurious leather upper in Sail with a mix of Coconut Milk and Light Orewood Brown accents, giving the sneaker a sort of monochromatic vibe. Contrasting those softer colors are bold strikes of black at the heel, toe, and sharktooth, which is also speckled for that extra little hit of detail.

The Air Jordan 5 SE Sail is set to drop on April 13th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $210. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Kobe 8 Protro Venice Beach

SNX
Nike

Price: $190

The first of many Kobe’s dropping this week, the Venice Beach utilizes the 8 Protro silhouette with a breathable upper dressed in a psychedelic mix of red, yellow, teal, and grey. According to Nike, the colorway is inspired by Venice Beach, Los Angeles, and is a nod to the neighborhood’s streetball scene.

To balance out all the color, this sneaker sports a grey primer base, which keeps the design from looking too out of control. Having said that, I would’ve liked to see Nike just go for it and give us full psychedelia. But hey, I guess that’s what the LeBron line is for.

The Nike Kobe 8 Protro Venice Beach is set to drop on April 13th at 8:00 AM PST for a retail price of $190. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Nike Kobe 4 Protro Philly

Nike

Price: $190

If the bright swirling psychedelic vibe of Venice Beach isn’t your thing, Nike is also taking us east with the Kobe 4 Protro Philly. A nod to Kobe’s hometown, the Philly features a mix of Varsity Royal blue with Varsity Red accents at the collar, outlining the swoosh, throughout the laces, and underfoot.

Of the three Kobe’s launching this week, this one has to be my least favorite.

The Nike Kobe 4 Protro Philly is set to drop on April 13th at 8:00 AM PST for a retail price of $190. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Nike Kobe 6 Protro Italian Camo

SNX
Nike

Price: $190

The last of the travel-themed Kobe’s dropping this week is easily the best. The Kobe 6 Protro Italian Camo sports a snakeskin-inspired upper in camouflage with crimson accents and Zoom Air tech in the forefoot. The colorway is a nod to Kobe’s time in Italy (which he called home for 7 years) and takes its main inspiration from Italian military fatigues.

Of the three this isn’t just the best colorway, but the best silhouette, as the 6 is the coolest the line has ever looked.

The Nike Kobe 6 Protro Italian Camo is set to drop on April 13th at 8:00 AM PST for a retail price of $190. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Adidas Crazy 98 Core Black

SNX
Adidas

Price: $150

Everyone — brands and consumers — seem obsessed with the Y2K comeback, and if you’re not feeling that and want to take things back to the ‘90s, Adidas is letting you do that with this new Crazy 98 drop (you could argue 98 is too close to the new millennium, which, fair).

This sneaker features a mixed leather, mesh, and synthetic upper riding on an EVA midsole with Adiprene cushioning and a classic three-color mix of black, white, and purple. The swirling details along the upper make this sneaker look like a fingerprint to me, which is cool if you’ve always wanted a sneaker that, you know, looks like a fingerprint. Who doesn’t want that?

The Adidas Crazy 98 Core Black is set to drop on April 13th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $150. Pick up a pair at the Adidas webstore.

Ear rumbling is a special ‘superpower’ that not everyone has

There are no two human beings who are exactly alike. One of the funny quirks of evolution is that some of us can do things with our bodies we think are routine, but are impossible for others.

Some people can wiggle their ears, others can’t. Some can wiggle their nose like Samantha from “Bewitched” while others just look really silly when making an attempt.

Not everyone can lick their elbow but most wouldn’t attempt to do so in public.

A Twitter user named Massimo dropped some knowledge about a skill that not everyone has and even fewer discuss: ear rumbling.

Those of us who can do it know exactly what it is, while it’s a mystery to those who cannot.

People who can ear rumble have the ability to control the tensor tympani, a muscle within the ear. Contracting the muscle creates a rushing, rumbling sound that, if flexed enough, can drown out a significant amount of noise.

This can be useful when someone is saying something that you don’t want to hear but don’t want to be rude and cover your ears. It can come in real handy if someone is about to spoil your favorite TV show or if you live with someone who can’t stop nagging.

Some people cannot voluntarily create the rumbling sound but hear it when they let out a large yawn.

There’s a Reddit sub-forum just for ear rumblers with over 60,000 people. Here’s how some of them get rumblin’.

“I just squeeze the muscle in my ears I guess,” — melvinthefish

“When I flex and hold whatever I’m manipulating to do that, I get my rumble,” — ttywzl

“I get a mild rumble just doing the usual flex, but i can make it a bit louder by bringing my top lip up to my nose,” — Willmono7

“The best way I can describe it is I ‘squint my ears,'” —SteeleIT

The muscle exists to mask-low frequency sounds so we can focus on those at a higher frequency. It also works to mute sounds we create ourselves such as eating potato chips or coughing. It’s a way that helps us from becoming annoyed with our own bodies.

Unfortunately, the muscle has a rather slow reaction time so it cannot prevent us from hearing loud sudden noises like a gunshot or a book slamming on the ground.

Massimo’s tweet caused quite a stir on the platform.

Although scientists have known about ear rumbling since at least the 1800s, there doesn’t appear to have been too much research on the topic. We know that some can rumble and others cannot, but it’s unclear how it breaks down percentage-wise or if it’s more prevalent in certain groups.

The good news is that the word is starting to get out and people who’ve been rumbling all their lives suddenly don’t feel so alone.

When Does ‘The Sympathizer’ Premiere On HBO?

sympathizer
hbo

For his first role since winning an Oscar, Robert Downey Jr. plays not one, not two, not three, but four different characters in The Sympathizer.

The HBO limited series, from brilliant Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, and Oldboy filmmaker Park Chan-wook, is described as “an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.” Hoa Xuande is in the lead role, while Downey Jr. plays a CIA operative, a professor, a congressman, and a movie director.

“Even though each of the characters from all of the four have different occupations and they might have different characteristics, in essence it was very important they were faces that represent America,” Park explained about the casting decision, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “So in order to convey this idea very clearly and directly, I came to the conclusion that I’d have one actor portray all these different characters so that audiences can understand clearly.”

The Sympathizer, which is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and also stars Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, and Sandra Oh, debuts on HBO and Max on Sunday, April 14, at 9 p.m. EST.

Shohei Ohtani’s Interpreter Lost Over $40 Million On Sports Betting In 26 Months

One of the biggest stories in baseball this year has been the explosive gambling controversy involving Shohei Ohtani’s longtime friend and interpreter Ippei Mizuhara, who Ohtani alleged to have stolen millions of dollars from him to cover for massive gambling debts.

While there had been some skepticism from fans regarding whether Mizuhara was covering for Ohtani being the one gambling, as the way the story unfolded seemed a bit suspect, a federal complaint against Mizuhara that became public on Thursday details extensively the gambling addiction of Mizuhara and the correspondence via text between he and bookies. The texts to the bookie are truly incredible, with the full complaint available to read here, but some of the highlights include:

  • “I’m terrible at this sport betting thing huh? Lol . . . Any chance u can bump me again?? As you know, you don’t have to worry about me not paying!!”
  • “Fuck I lost it all lol . . . can you ask if he can bump me 50k? That will be my last one for a while if I lose it.”
  • “I’ve just been messing around with soccer, there’s games on 24/7 lol. I took UCLA but they lost outright!!!”

That’s just the appetizer in the complaint, which includes a full rundown of Mizuhara’s gambling activity over the course of 26 months from December 2021 to January 2024 in which he had over $320 million in bets out across 19,000 bets, losing a total of more than $40 million.

The 35966 Records reflect approximately 19,000 wagers between December 2021 and January 2024, and nearly 25 bets per day on average. The wagers reflected in the 35966 Records ranged in value from roughly $10 to $160,000 per bet, with an average bet amount of roughly $12,800. During this period, the 35966 Records reflect total winning bets of $142,256,769.74, and total losing bets of $182,935,206.68, leaving a total net balance of negative $40,678,436.94.8.

He was correct that he is terrible at this sports betting thing, as that’s a staggering negative ROI even considering the volume of bets and amount he was betting. If anything, the federal charges being levied against Mizuhara might have saved him as the complaint shows the booki getting increasingly frustrated as losses piled up and payments were slow, with the bookie at one point noting it might be “out of my hands” soon.

Mizuhara is charged with bank fraud for transferring more than $16,000,000 from accounts that he handled for Ohtani to the bookie.

‘Wheel Of Fortune’ Fans Are Fuming Over A Misleading Puzzle Category That Cost A Contestant $100,000

Wheel of Fortune fans are furious after watching a contestant miss out on $100,000 thanks to a misleading puzzle category. The situation was so bad that host Pat Sajak couldn’t even look the poor woman in the eye. Wheel Watchers are always on the lookout for contestants getting done dirty, and this latest incident was a rough one.

It all went down as Laura Young of York, Maine, made it to the Bonus Round after dominating Wednesday’s episode. However, things went south when Young was told the puzzle category was “Place” before being left with a whole lot of empty spaces as the board read, “_ R _ _ E L / _ _ L _ _ _ _.”

Despite being a self-proclaimed “crazy walking lady,” Young was unable to solve the puzzle, and even Sajak commented that she had “no shot at that.” Things got worse when it came time for Sajak to see what prize she missed. He didn’t even want to show her.

Via TV Insider:

He felt so bad that he told Young to face the other way, which she did, turning her back to the camera. He then showed the envelope to the audience, which contained $100,000.

As the audience groaned, Young turned back around and yelled, “No?!”

Sajak handed her the envelope to look for herself, and she audibly gasped. “Number one, I feel terrible,” Sajak told her. “Number two, no way you were gonna solve that puzzle with the letters you had. Number three, you won $19,350. You did great and were a lot of fun.”

While Young took the loss graciously, Wheel of Fortune viewers blasted the show on social media for categorizing a gravel walkway as a “place” instead of a “thing.”

“I’ve got beef with whoever makes the final puzzles on #WheelofFortune,” Twitter user Nikki wrote. “I’d consider gravel walkway to be a ‘thing’ and not a place. The answers have been whack this week.”

“Gravel walkway is a ‘place’??? Since when?” tweeted Mark.

“A ‘gravel walkway’ is a thing, not a place,” Queen Smashley tweeted. “Get your shit together @WheelOfFortune!”

According to New York’s PIX11, Polo G was arrested on gun charges on April 10 at The Dominick Hotel in Manhattan, according to the New York Police Department. A search warrant was executed at the hotel and the rapper was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a loaded firearm.

The New York Post reports a maid who was cleaning the room found the gun, a Glock. Police were then called to the hotel and found the gun on a loveseat. There was a bullet in the chamber and nine in the magazine.

In a plea for no bail, Polo G’s attorney Stacey Richman said, “This man is 100% serious in terms of his work, in terms of his professionalism. He has absolutely no incentive to flee because he has a career he’s built.”

The rapper was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and hit with a $25,000 cash bail, which he posted. His next court date is June 4, where he’ll be allowed to appear virtually.

Meanwhile, the rapper is currently preparing to release a new album, Hood Poet. The project was originally set to drop in September 2023, but Polo ultimately ended up deciding to delay the project, saying, “I’mma be postponing my album drop ’til further notice. Just getting back on track from a minor setback… it’ll be worth the wait. I promise.”

The First Footage From ‘Gladiator 2’ With Denzel Washington And Paul Mescal Sounds Pretty Great

gladiator
DreamWorks Pictures

Paul Mescal is quietly moving on from playing dramatic and sensitive types to bigger things, like gladiators in a scorching hot ancient stadium filled with people who want to see him die. This was before the Colosseum was turned into a music venue.

Mescal stars in Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator 2 alongside Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. According to Variety, a teaser for the film was shown this week at CinemaCon and it did not disappoint.

The teaser saw Mescal come face to face with a charging rhino, baboons, and, the scariest of all, The Mandalorian. All while looking like the most jacked Irishman you’ve ever seen.

Here are some more takeaways from those in attendance:

There were naval bombardments, political intrigue aplenty, and a pair of diabolical emperors who seem even crazier than Joaquin Phoenix’s unhinged monarch from the first film. Manipulating everything is Denzel Washington’s shadowy operator. He seems to be pulling the strings, intending to use Mescal as a blunt instrument as he looks to steamroll over an empire that’s gone seriously off the rails. “Rome must fall,” he says at one point. “I need only to give it a push.”

Stranger Things‘ Joseph Quinn and The White Lotus’ Fred Hechinger will also star as co-emperors Geta and Caracalla, who are seen “wearing face paint and watching the whole spectacle from their imperial boxes.”

Are you… entertained?

While we don’t have a teaser yet, we can expect to see some footage soon, as the movie hits theaters on November 22. For now, you can watch Russell Crowe in the original flick streaming on Paramount+. Or something else!

A dad dressed as Darth Vader to wake up his son. The kid’s reaction is pure ‘Star Wars.’

Dads are ridiculous. But perhaps, in the world today, there is no dad quite so ridiculous as Rob Lopez:

Photo via Rob Lopez/YouTube.

On a morning not too long ago, Lopez apparently had the following thought: “I’m going to dress up as Darth Vader and wake up my 2-year-old.”

Photo via Rob Lopez/YouTube.

Clearly, the correct follow-up thought is, “No. That’s silly. Why would I ever wake up a 2-year-old. Like, on purpose.”

But not for Rob Lopez. Oh, no.

After suiting up…

…and receiving the mission critical sign-off from his wife.

He grabbed his lightsaber and gave it a go. The results … pretty much speak for themselves (fast-forward to 1:05 for the main event).

There are a couple of things about Lopez’s son’s reaction that we should talk about.

(First, this child is objectively the hardest core human on the face of planet Earth right now.)

He grabs the lightsaber he keeps next to his bed (just in case) and it’s game on, Dark Lord of the Sith. Game. On.

Think about how you would feel, as an adult person, in complete control of your faculties, with a firm grasp on the difference between fiction and reality, being aggressively prodded awake by a six-foot-tall man in a full-body Darth Vader mech-suit complete with voice modulator and terrifyingly heavy breathing.

Think about how loud you would scream and the volume of pee you would pee into your pants.

Meanwhile, this toddler — who is probably no more than three feet tall, groggy and vulnerable, with no cognitive ability to discern this is not the real Darth Vader — didn’t even think twice about taking him on.

Perhaps the most impressive part? At a mere 2 years of age, he’s already learned, perhaps, the single greatest lesson of “Star Wars.”

You don’t defeat the dark side with mad lightsaber skills (although they are fun to show off).

You defeat it with compassion.

…which, in this kid’s case, involves casually grabbing a book and asking Darth Vader to read him a story.

Empathy for Siths — with an assist from curiosity and literacy: That’s a lesson we could all use.

A body temperature expert explains why some people are always freezing

You wear extra chunky sweaters. You’ve never met a mitten you didn’t like. You may even keep a lap blanket at work.

You’re one of those people who is always cold. And you are not alone.

Inside or outside, you just can’t seem to get warm. This characteristic of yours manifests itself in extra blankets, wild heating bills, and enough complaints that you start going hoarse.

But surely there’s a scientific reason as to why some people are always cold, right?

It can’t just be random chance that has doomed you to a life of perpetual shivers. I reached out to an expert to learn more.

Dr. Christopher Minson is a professor in the department of human physiology at the University of Oregon. One of his primary research interests is thermoregulation, that’s how the brain and body interact and adapt as we heat and cool. Plainly put, he is the perfect guy to answer a few questions from #TeamCold.

(This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.)

Upworthy (UP): So what is actually happening in the body when a person gets chilly?

Dr. Chris Minson (CM): In the simplest of terms, feeling either cold or warm means that the temperature “set point” of the body is being challenged by thermal inputs throughout the body, including in the brain, the blood, the spinal cord, our organs, our muscles, and our skin. Part of our brain collects all of those thermal inputs and essentially compares them to what body temperature it wants to hold. So if your skin temperature is lowered, even though the rest of your body is still at a comfortable set-point, you will feel cold — in some cases, cold enough to make behavioral changes like putting on a sweater.

UP: Is there a reason this seems to largely impact women?

CM: The people who feel “always cold” will typically have lower muscle mass relative to body surface area (typically, women and older people). Their actual body core temperature may not really be below normal, but they feel cold because their body is telling them to conserve heat.

There have also been limited reports that women have a higher density of blood vessels at the skin surface, which would make them more sensitive to cold. However, there hasn’t been enough good data collected on this theory to confirm or disprove it.

This also explains a frequent frustrations about women and men in relationships…

CM: A common complaint by women and men in relationships is that women’s feet are often very cold, especially in bed. That goes along with the lower body mass to surface area relationship in women. As their body works to conserve heat, it vasoconstricts blood vessels in the extremities (hands and feet) to keep the core warm. This reduced blood flow results in cold hands and feet in women more than men.

So there you have it: Your brain is simply an overworked project manager trying to keep you alive. But there are a few things you can do about it.

UP: If you are a person who is always cold, is there anything you can do to “retrain” your body, so to speak?

CM: One of the best things someone can do is to increase their fat-free mass (muscle). This will increase overall metabolic rate (although it’s not easy to do.)

Another thing a person could do is undergo cold-stresses, such as allowing themselves to be exposed to very cold temperatures for short periods of time. It sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s been suggested that this could decrease the sensation of feeling cold. An example is putting the shower on ‘cold’ for a short period of time in the shower. Not easy to do, and you would want to build up to a full minute each day, but in some people it can help them to decrease the feeling of being cold.

UP: There are a lot of jokes at the expense of people who are always cold, but at what point does it go from “I’m always cold, and it’s a quirky thing about me” to “I’m always cold and I should probably see my doctor”?

CM: There is the possibility that someone’s perpetual coldness could be caused by abnormally low thyroid hormone levels, and that can be verified with a blood test. That is by far the rarer condition, but taking hormone supplements if medically needed can help. If a person is quite lethargic, has low motivation, and is always cold, it might be worth having thyroid hormones evaluated.

So if you are a lap-blanket wearing member of #TeamCold, don’t fret.

You are strong. You are capable. And unless you have pain or some of the symptoms Minson mentioned, there is likely nothing wrong with you. Our bodies just require different things of us, and yours requires that you have to deal with an overly-air conditioned-society. My sincerest apologies. On behalf of #TeamHot, your next cocoa is on me.
