Animal Collective Are Reissuing The Classic ‘Sung Tongs’ For Its 20th Anniversary And Dropping A New Live Album, Too

Animal Collective was a (perhaps the) defining force in 2000s indie music, and part of that esteemed body of work was the 2004 album Sung Tongs. The project turns 20 years old this year, so the group is honoring the occasion with a fresh reissues. Aside from a rerelease of the album, there’s also a new live album, Sung Tongs Live At The Theatre At Ace Hotel.

The live album recording comes from a 2018 show where Avey Tare and Panda Bear (the only two band members to perform on the album, which was originally credited to just the duo) played the full album.

Both projects come in lovely vinyl editions, too: “canary yellow & ruby red” for Sung Tongs and “neon orange & light green” for the live album.

Listen to the live version of “Kids On Holiday” above and check out the cover art and tracklists for both releases below.

Will There Be ‘A Man In Full’ Season 2?

Man In Full
Netflix

Netflix’s newest drama series A Man In Full is based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Tim Wolfe. After dropping last week, the six episode series has taken the no. 2 spot on the Netflix Top 10 behind the chilling Baby Reindeer. And now it’s even being roped into the Drake/Kendrick beef, so that’s a whole other thing.

The series follows Jeff Daniels as an Atlanta real estate mogul who faces sudden bankruptcy, and subsequently “tries to defend his empire from those attempting to capitalize on his fall from grace.” This seems to be a common problem amongst the rich. Diane Lane, Tom Pelphrey, Lucy Liu, Bill Camp and Cahnte Adams also star, while Regina King directed the pilot.

Netflix has not confirmed if there will be a second season, though the series is being marketed as a “limited series,” which is sometimes a sure sign that the story is complete. But not always! While fans might be holding out for a second season, the story is pretty much wrapped up by the end of the season, and there was no sequel to the initial book, so it seems unlikely.

Even if there is no season two, Daniels called working on the show a “thrill” for the actor. “I’m swinging for the fences,” he told People. “That’s where the fun is for me at this point, and that’s where the challenge is. Can I pull this off? Can he stay believable? Do you care about him enough to hang with him for the entire series? That was the challenge, and apparently I pulled it off.”

‘Would you let your child wear this?’: Mom asks if she’s ‘overreacting’ to a Target dress.

There seems to be a constant war between children’s clothing retailers who want to push the boundaries of modesty and parents who push back, saying they are sexualizing children. On top of that, when young girls believe they are supposed to wear clothes that are tight-fitting and revealing, it’s very damaging to their self-esteem and body image.

“I think it’s one thing that the girls’ clothes are very fitted and small, and it’s another that they’re in such direct contrast to what you find on the boys’ side, and those two things send a pretty strong message about what they’re supposed to look like, dressed to be slim and to be fit,” Sharon Choksi, a mom of two and founder of the clothing line, Girls Will Be, told CNN.

The topic came up again recently when Meghan Mayer, a mother of 2 and a 7th-grade school teacher, posted a video on TikTok about a dress she saw at Target that received over 1.6 million views.

Meghan was reacting to a smock-style patterned dress with balloon sleeves that appeared modest at first glance. But after closer examination, it has holes on the waist on both sides, revealing the girl’s midriff and possibly more.

@thecrazycreativeteacher

Thoughts?

“My oldest daughter and I are at Target and there’s some cute spring stuff,” Mayer started the video. “I am a little bit more conservative when it comes to my kids’ clothing, so maybe I’m overreacting, but let me know what you think of these dresses.”

She added that the dress may be okay for a 12-year-old but was inappropriate in her opinion for a 6-or 7-year-old.

Mayor asked her followers what they thought of the dress. “Like I said, I know I’m a little bit more conservative. I don’t usually even let my girls wear bikinis, but maybe I’m overreacting, I don’t know. Thoughts?”

For reference, she then showed the sizes of the dresses to show they were for kids and then revealed the holes in the sides. “Look at these little slits on the sides of these dresses, right at the hips on all these dresses,” she said.

Most people commenting on the video thought the dress was a bit much for such a young girl to wear.

“You’re not overreacting. You’re parenting properly,” Paper Bound Greetings wrote. “No, no. There is no reason for those holes to be there. They should have pockets! Not holes!” Anna wrote. “I think retailers are trying to mature our kids too fast. I agree with mom!” HollyMoore730 commented.

But some people thought that that dress was acceptable and Mayer was overreacting.

“Unpopular opinion, I think they’re cute,” Dr. Robinson wrote. “When I was a kid in the ‘70s I wore halter tops and tube tops; they were not seen as big deals. I don’t think this is scandalous,” Kimberly Falkowsi added. “Overreacting. Both my girls have the blue and white, you can’t even tell much. It’s not that big of a hole. The dresses are so cute,” LolitaKHalessi commented.

Some commenters told Mayer that she should buy the dress and have her daughter wear a shirt beneath it so it doesn’t show skin. But Mayer believes that would be supporting Target for making questionable kids’ clothing.

“No, I’m not going to buy it and have them wear a tank top with it, because then that’s showing Target that it’s OK,” she told Today.com. “And over time, the cutout will get bigger and bigger.”

Wife has the perfect response when husband introduces her to coworkers as ‘The Housewife’

A husband invited some new coworkers over for dinner and instead of properly introducing his wife, he made a sexist joke that she felt was belittling. The wife, who goes by the name Sadie on Reddit, shared the story on the AITA forum to ask if she responded correctly.

Spoiler alert: Yes, she did.

“My husband invited his new coworkers over for dinner. When they arrived, he introduced me by gesturing at me and saying, ‘This is Mrs. Smith (he didn’t even say my name)…the housewife!'” Sadie revealed.

“I looked at him for a second, then I started laughing hysterically,” Sadie continued. “I then told said, ‘No, honey, I work full time, and YES I still act like a housewife when I’m home because you simply can’t bother to help.’” After Sadie’s remark, the guests stared at the husband, who tried to laugh it off and then changed the subject by asking them if they wanted a drink.

The rest of the dinner was awkward, with the husband and wife exchanging angry glances. After the guests left, the husband blew up at Sadie, saying that she laughed like a “lunatic” and that she ruined “his image.”

“I told him he was wrong to lie about my status and deny my degree, to begin with,” Sadie continued. He said I could’ve talked to him about it privately later but not like this, and making his coworkers think he’s useless.” Sadie asked the online forum if she was out of line, and they responded with a collective no.

People overwhelmingly supported the wife, raising an issue far beyond the fact that her husband was seriously inconsiderate. It’s a big red flag in a relationship when one spouse diminishes or belittles the other in public or private.

“Men who diminish their partners to look better at the office are gross. He only seemed to care about his embarrassment and not yours. I’d be mortified if my husband used a lie that robbed me of my success and accomplishments to prop himself up,” Geranium27 wrote.

“It’s a red flag for the relationship. He doesn’t want a partner who is an equal. He wants a dependent woman who he can provide for completely so he can feel like a man,” RedWanderingLizard added.

Some also noted that it was wrong of him to disparage homemakers.

“He diminished (being a housewife is not a ‘low’ role, but he meant it that way) you in public, you corrected him. In public. As he deserved,” LetThemEatHay wrote.

The viral post received over 24,000 comments, highlighting the idea that belittling your partner is a serious sign of a dysfunctional relationship that should not be ignored.

According to Psychology Today, backhanded compliments, digs and subtle put-downs are attempts by one partner to make the other feel small and themselves feel big. “Although cleverly disguised as a joke or a compliment, these comments may qualify as ‘toxic’ if they sting, cause confusion, and replay in a person’s mind for days, disrupting their peace,” Erin Leonard, Ph.D. writes.

Ultimately, commenters overwhelmingly agreed that Sadie was right not to let her husband’s belittling compliment go unnoticed. By sharing it online, she opened up a meaningful discussion about appropriate humor in relationships. Studies show that it’s healthy for partners to joke around with one another, but when the comments are thinly veiled put-downs and backhanded compliments, it’s no laughing matter.

Beethoven’s 5th Symphony wasn’t made for guitar, but this guy could make you believe it was

Anyone who has tried learning to play guitar knows it’s not as easy as some people make it look. It’s not as visually linear as the piano, requires all of your fingers to do multiple things at once, and until you build up calluses on your fingertips, it can be quite painful. So when someone plays guitar well and with apparent effortlessness, we should give them props. And when someone goes a level (or 10) beyond that, it’s appropriate to experience some serious awe and wonderment.

Meet Marcin Patrzałek, known simply as Marcin, a Polish guitarist who stunned the “America’s Got Talent” audience in Season 14 with his rendition of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony. Clearly, an entire symphony is not a piece written for solo guitar, but seeing Marcin play it might actually convince you that it was.

The way he uses the whole guitar is mesmerizing, and the fact that he arranged this when he was only 18 is really something. Watch:

Despite his early elimination, 23-year-old Marcin has since built a significant online following. His talents have only grown, as has the number of musical genres he’s covered with the guitar.

Check him out doing opera with this piece from “Carmen.”

@marcin.music

When a guitarist joins an opera… #guitar #classicalmusic

How about some blues with a little “Ain’t No Sunshine”…and kittens?

@marcin.music

“Ain’t No Sunshine” on one guitar is out now everywhere 🐱 #guitar #blues #cattok

Audiences find Marcin’s extraordinary guitar skills both awe-inspiring and amusing.

“This man straight up said, ‘If i buy a whole guitar, I’m gonna use the whole guitar.'”

“Bruh the guitar didn’t even know it could do that.”

“Bop it. Pull it. Twist it.”

“How my parents expected me to play on the first day of guitar lessons.”

“Okay I know this is impressive but if you’ve ever seriously tried to play an acoustic you know THIS IS SO IMPRESSIVE.”

“I tried this once but decided to do something easier like astrophysics.”

Many were curious about how Marcin plays high on the neck without plucking the strings. It’s actually a guitar technique called “hammer-ons and pull-offs,” which lets Marcin’s fingers function much like the hammers on a piano do, striking the string to make a note.

But again, Marcin makes it look so easy, combining various guitar techniques into a seamless symphony of sound, all coming from his own fingers.

In fact, he makes it look so easy that there are always comments from people who don’t believe he’s really playing the guitar, despite plenty of videos in which he’s playing live and guitarists in the comments explaining how he’s doing it (and being properly awed by it). If you want definitive proof, you might just have to catch him on tour, though most of the dates so far are sold out.

And if you want to hear or see more of Marcin online, you can find his singles here or follow him on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.

Want To Know When ‘The Bear’ Is Returning For Season 3? (Yes Chef!)

Carmy Marcus Bear
FX/Hulu

Well, here’s some fun news: The Bear will return for season 3 on June 27. Like previous seasons, every episode will be released at once on FX on Hulu. You can watch the release date announcement video courtesy of star Jeremy Allen White‘s Instagram below.

There’s no official logline for season 3 yet, but last December, Allen White teased what to expect.

“I do know in January I’m going to spend a fair amount of time getting together with some chefs. There’ll be a menu set, I believe, that’s going to be for the restaurant in the third season,” he told Variety. “And I know that I’m going to start putting together that menu with different chefs. We all did a lot of preparation before the first season. I went to culinary school and I spent a lot of time in restaurants. And then, for the second season, so much of it was about putting the restaurant together, so there wasn’t that much cooking. But now, in the third season, I think we’re going to go back to that functioning kitchen atmosphere that we had in the first.”

The Bear also stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Matty Matheson.

How Many Episodes Are In ‘Doctor Who’ Season 14?

doctor who
bad wolf/bbc studios

In 2023, Russell T. Davies triumphantly returned to Doctor Who after 16 years, shuffling in a new era for the long-running series.

The upcoming season is set to premiere on May 10th on Disney+, where Ncuti Gatwa will play the fifteenth iteration of the infamous Doctor/alien being. Gatwa first appeared in the 2023 Christmas Special to take over for David Tennant. Gatwa is joined by Millie Gibson as the Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby.

As with any Doctor Who season, there will be some intergalactic travel that will likely be met with minor inconveniences and side quests like dinosaurs or brooding artists. Season fourteen will consist of eight episodes, including one Beatles-centric tale. But don’t expect to hear “Hey Jude.”

Episode one, aptly titled “Space Babies,” was penned by Davies himself. In fact, Davies wrote six of the eight episodes, while fan-favorite Steven Moffat also returned to write his own episode, titled “Boom,” marking his first contribution to the series since 2017. Earlier this year, Moffat confirmed the news, “There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go – so long as I got out of his garden. Working with old friends and a brand new Doctor I couldn’t be happier,” he told The Radio Times. Loki EP Katie Herron also penned an episode in the upcoming season.

New episodes of Doctor Who will drop weekly on Disney+ through June 22nd. Check out the trailer below:

What To Watch: Our Picks For The TV Shows And Movies We Think You Should Stream This Week

doctor who
bad wolf/bbc studios

Each week our staff of film and television experts surveys the entertainment landscape to select the ten best new/newish shows available for you to stream at home. We put a lot of thought into our selections, and our debates on what to include and what not to include can sometimes get a little heated and feelings may get hurt, but so be it, this is an important service for you, our readers. With that said, here are our selections for this week.

15. X-Men ’97 (Disney Plus)

X-Men 97 Rogue Magneto
Disney+

If you’re going to do unadulterated nostalgia, at least make it as fun (and occasionally devastating) as X-Men ‘97. The Disney Plus animated series is a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992 to 1997, and follows the team of mutants as they do mutant-like things. Do we really need to explain what the X-Men show is about? It’s about the X-Men.

Watch it on Disney Plus

14. The Sympathizer (Max)

max

The last time Park Chan-wook directed a limited series, it was The Little Drummer Girl. That turned out pretty good. Now, the Korean filmmaker is back with another excellent addition to his filmography.

Based on author Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer-winning novel of the same, The Sympathizer is described as “an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his new life as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren’t over.” The cast is led by Hoa Xuande and Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr., who plays multiple characters.

Watch it on Max

13. Fallout (Prime Video)

Fallout Walton Goggins
Amazon

Fallout is an adaptation of Bethesda’s behemoth franchise, a story set within the retro-futuristic world that’s captivated console users for years and years. Yes, there are delightful little nods to in-game storylines – Pip-Boys and Nuka-Cola and Radaway, but they either serve a larger purpose or don’t linger for too long, ensuring that the show stands on its own two feet. Long-time gamers should have little to gripe about while those craving better genre fare amidst the streaming glut should come away satisfied. Whether you know its history or not, Fallout is a f*cking blast of a sci-fi show that defies expectations in the most unconventional of ways (and turned Walton Goggins into a sex symbol).

Watch it on Prime Video

12. Knuckles (Paramount Plus)

Paramount+

There’s no Keanu Reeves (yet), but Knuckles should delight the lil’ Sonic fans in your home. The Paramount Plus series has Idris Elba reprising his role as the red echidna from the movies, while the rest of the cast includes Adam Pally, Cary Elwes, Edi Patterson, and Stockard Channing. Over the course of six episodes, Knuckles goes on a “journey of self-discovery as he agrees to train [Pally’s character] Wade as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior.” Is it too much to hope for a Big the Cat cameo?

Watch it on Paramount

11. Baby Reindeer (Netflix)

Ed Miller/Netflix

The less you learn in advance about Baby Reindeer, the better. Just know that it’s one of the most talked-about shows of the year so far, and it’s getting favorably compared to I May Destroy You and Fleabag. Don’t waste your time speculating, as requested by creator and star Richard Gadd. Watch it.

Watch it on Netflix

10. Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix)

Netflix

The latest Neil Gaiman project to be turned into a show is Dead Boy Detectives. It’s a lot of fun. Creepy, but fun. The series follows two sleuths, Edwin Payne (played by George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), who track down the world’s most elusive ghosts and demons. Did I mention that Edwin and Charles are also ghosts? That’s important to know, as is this: co-creator Steve Yockey compared Dead Boy Detectives to “The Hardy Boys on acid.” OK!

9. The Big Door Prize (Apple TV Plus)

apple tv+

Apple TV’s breakout hit The Big Door Prize returns for a second season, which follows “the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious ‘next stage.’ As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked,” according to the official plot synopsis. Chris O’Dowd is back, as is Josh Segarra, in case you’re missing Lance from The Other Two. I know I am.

8. The Veil (Hulu)

The international spy thriller from creator Steven Knight stars Elisabeth Moss and Yumna Marwan as “two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost.” You had me at Elisabeth Moss.

7. Anyone But You (Netflix)

You’ve probably heard about this one. Anyone But You, which has Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell pretending to be the world’s most attractive couple (both on- and off-screen), grossed $219 million at the box office. That’s a massive amount of money for a romantic-comedy. Now it’s on Netflix, in case you want to watch Sweeney sing “Unwritten” to Powell’s naked butt on a loop.

6. Eileen (Hulu)

neon

This darkly comedic thriller from Neon stars a young woman named Eileen (played by Thomasin McKenzie) whose ho-hum life working at a juvenile detention facility is interrupted by her new co-worker, glamorous psychologist Rebecca (Anne Hathaway). The pair quickly bond, but things are more disturbing than they seem…

Watch it on Hulu

5. Hacks (Max)

Hacks
HBO/Max

To quote Kimberly Ricci’s glowing review: “Through a skillful turn from the Hacks writers, the third season does something different than its two predecessors and succeeds mightily. Is the power struggle completely over? No way, but there is no question that these two women are meant to be together, and that they enhance each other professionally. As well, they somehow begin to really connect on a personal level and — wait for it — make each other better humans. It sounds sappy, but it rolls well.”

4. Black Twitter: A People’s History (Hulu)

hulu

Black Twitter: A People’s History is a three-part documentary series from Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny that “charts the rise, the movements, the voices and the memes that made Black Twitter an influential and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life,” according to the official synopsis. Those interviewed include author Roxane Gay, comedian W. Kamau Bell, and journalist Jemele Hill.

3. The Idea of You (Prime Video)

An actually sexy romantic-comedy, what a concept! The Idea of You stars Anne Hathaway as a single mom who attends Coachella with her teenage daughter. While there, she meets Hayes Campbell, played by Bottoms breakout Nicholas Galitzine, the lead singer of the boy band August Moon. The two begin a romance that definitely (wink) isn’t inspired by Harry Styles. The Idea of You is getting rave reviews, as it should: Anne Hathaway rules.

2. The Iron Claw (Max)

the iron claw

Zac Efron gives an Oscar-worthy performance in this A24 drama about the Von Erich family of wrestlers. The Iron Claw, which also stars Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Stanley Simons, Holt McCallany, and Lily James, is definitely worth watching, but fair warning: it’s a heartbreaker. If you were waiting to watch it at home because you didn’t want to ugly-cry in public at a theater, now’s your chance.

1. Doctor Who (Disney Plus)

bad wolf/bbc studios

Doctor Who is separated into two eras: the original run from 1963 to 1989 and the relaunch, which began in 2005 and continues to this day. The new season is the 14th since it was revived, but it’s officially referred to as Doctor Who Season One.” Got all that? If you’re a Doctor Who fan, obviously. But to everyone else who is extremely confused, it’s never been easier to watch the iconic British series now that it’s on Disney Plus with Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Millie Gibson as his companion, the wonderfully-named Ruby Sunday. Is it too soon to dream of a TARDIS at Disneyland?
