Antony Starr Heartily Disagrees With Jack Quaid On Who Would Be Standing After A ‘Homelander Vs. Superman’ Fight

The Boys Homelander
Amazon

Jack Quaid voices Clark Kent/Superman in Adult Swim’s My Adventures With Superman series. He also portrays Hughie on The Boys, which will soon return for a fourth season of rip-roaring Kimiko action and f*cked-up Homelander shenanigans. And that sets the stage for a very nerdy difference of opinion between Quaid and Antony Starr, who appears to have a healthy sense of humor about portraying Homelander, and that’s probably necessary to embody such an abhorrent being. Starr does give Homelander credit for his own (loathsome) self-preservation tactics, and that’s why he wasn’t afraid to contradict Jack Quaid’s take on a Superman Vs. Homelander hypothetical.

Screenrant recently spoke with both actors, and Quaid of course stuck up for Superman in a fight, but in response, Starr insisted that “Homie” would manage to throw down and win in the worst way:

“Oh, really? Is that what he thinks? Here’s why Homelander would kick Superman’s ass. There’s no Kryptonite factor, and Homie would fight so dirty. He’s the [type to go], ‘Oh, you got me!’ as he goes down and then comes up and throws sand in your eyes. He’s a dirty dude, man. Whereas Superman is always like, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t do that. Oh, there’s innocent children that might get hurt.’ Homie’s going to human shield himself with the kids.”

Them’s fighting words, and that’s fun. Social media, however, does not believe that Homelander’s laser eyes are any match for Superman’s sheer strength. Naturally, the argument is being taken far too seriously, and it’s not as though we will ever actually find out the answer to this question, since WBD and Amazon probably will never agree to a crossover. Has somebody asked James Gunn about his opinion, though? Feels like that’s the next natural step here.

The Boys‘ fourth season debuts on June 13.

People are raving about how much easier it is to read with ‘bionic reading’ font

Reading is a fundamental tool of learning for most people, which is why it’s one of the first things kids learn in school and why nations set literacy goals.

But even those of us who are able to read fluently might sometimes struggle with the act of reading itself. Perhaps we don’t read as quickly as we wish we could or maybe our minds wander as our eyes move across the words. Sometimes we get to the end of a paragraph and realize we didn’t retain anything we just read.

People with focus or attention issues can struggle with reading, despite having no actual reading disabilities. It can be extremely frustrating to want to read something and have no issues with understanding the material, yet be unable to keep your mind engaged with the text long enough to get “into” what you’re reading.

But what if there were a font that could help you stay focused? That could help you not only read faster but better retain what you’ve just read?

That’s what the creators of Bionic Reading claim is possible with their font tool.”Bionic Reading revises texts so that the most concise parts of words are highlighted,” the Swiss company’s website reads. “This guides the eye over the text and the brain remembers previously learned words more quickly.”

Give it a try:

The gist is that our eyes don’t need to focus on the entire word because our brains can fill in the rest for us. By bolding the first part of the word, we’re more quickly able to move from word to word.

“Bionic Reading aims to play a supporting role in the absorption of volume text,” states the website. “We see technological progress as an opportunity for all those who want to increase the pleasure of reading in a noisy and hectic world in a focused way and without distraction.”

While there are no studies cited on this method of reading, there are plenty of anecdotes about it being helpful. The example shared by @WhattheADHD on Twitter got people’s attention and many people responded with enthusiasm at how much easier the bionic reading text was for them to read.

“This is amazing! I have ADHD and I didn’t even realize that I was having trouble fixating when I read,” wrote one person. “My eye latches right on to the bold face. Can’t wait to try reading a book again. It’s been all audiobooks for a while.”

“It’s incredible how reading this feels like finally unlocking 100% of your brain,” wrote another.

However, not everyone was impressed or thrilled with the sample. Some people said that they had a harder time reading the bionic text or that it distracted or slowed them down. Both positive and negative responses came from a diverse pool of people. Some who described themselves as neurodivergent said that they loved it and some said it was harder. The same went for people who said they were neurotypical, so it’s hard to say who this tool may specifically help the most. Everyone’s brains work differently, and different people will find different things helpful.

Bionic reading might be a game-changer for some, but it’s not the only tool of its kind. There are speed-reading programs that train you to stop reading each word and allow your brain to read visually instead of auditorily. There are also various methods of making reading easier by adjusting how your eyes move across the text.

For instance, check out this “space reading” technique:

Bionic Reading has a free text converter on its website that you can use to try out its font changes. A YouTube clip from the company also shows possibilities for how the font can be adjusted to individual preferences, making more or less of the initial letters bolded.

And again, if this doesn’t work for you, then it’s probably not made for you. For people who struggle with reading, something like Bionic Reading could make a huge difference.

Three cheers for technology being used to help people overcome difficulties and make learning easier and more efficient.

Pennsylvania home is the entrance to a cave that’s been closed for 70 years

Have you ever seen something in a movie or online and thought, “That’s totally fake,” only to find out it’s absolutely a real thing? That’s sort of how this house in Pennsylvania comes across. It just seems too fantastical to be real, and yet somehow it actually exists.

The home sits between Greencastle and Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, and houses a pretty unique public secret. There’s a cave in the basement. Not a man cave or a basement that makes you feel like you’re in a cave, but an actual cave that you can’t get to unless you go through the house.

Turns out the cave was discovered in the 1830s on the land of John Coffey, according to Uncovering PA, but the story of how it was found is unclear. People would climb down into the cave to explore occasionally until the land was leased about 100 years later and a small structure was built over the cave opening.

The idea was to make it accessible to visitors and use the cave as a tourist attraction, and the small structure was eventually built into a two-story house. But it was closed to the public in 1954 after the land was purchased for limestone mining and it remained closed for nearly 70 years. (In the words of Stephanie Tanner, “How rude.”) Sometime during that 70-year closure, the home that contains the cave was purchased by Dara Black, and in 2021, it reopened to the public.

Currently, the home is occupied by Black, but to gain access to the cave you can simply book a tour. The best part about booking a tour is that you only have to make a donation to enter. It’s a pay-what-you-can sort of setup, but since someone actually lives in the home, you can’t just pop in and ask for a tour. You have to go during the “open house” times available.

According to the Black-Coffey Caverns Facebook page, they treat the tours truly as an open house, complete with snacks and drinks. There’s a waiting room area where people can chat and eat their snacks while they wait for the tour to start. They also offer cave yoga once a month. According to Uncovering PA, the tour takes about 45 minutes to complete and there are about 3,000 feet worth of passageways.

Imagine living on top of a cave and just taking strangers on a waltz under your floorboards essentially. It makes me wonder if the house is quiet at night or if you can hear echoes of the cave sounds while you’re trying to sleep. From the Facebook page, it appears that the cave doesn’t have any lights, but there were pictures with some Christmas lights mounted to the cave walls. Otherwise, you have to use flashlights.

Hopefully, no mischievous children decide to play hide and seek or you just might have to call in a rescue crew. Literally. But what an unbelievable “pics or it didn’t happen” kind of story to tell. It’s not every day you run into someone that has a door that leads you to an underground cave.

If you want to see what a cave tour looks like starting from the outside of the house, check out the video below:

Holocaust survivor shares how he evaded Nazis as a boy by hiding in the woods for 2 years

Maxwell Smart, born Oziac Fromm, was 9 when World War II began in 1939, turning his life upside down. He was from a Jewish family in Buczacz, a small city in Poland, now part of Ukraine.

The Nazis occupied the region in July 1941, and one day, a notice was given for all Jewish men ages 18 to 50 to register for labor camps. They were separated into professionals (teachers, doctors, lawyers) and tradespeople. The professionals, including Smart’s father, were taken to a nearby hill and shot to death.

The rest of Smart’s family was forced into a ghetto and in 1943, when it was cleared, they were violently loaded onto a truck, but his mother wouldn’t let him join them. Instead, she urged him to run.

“I was angry. I said: ‘What do you mean you don’t want to take me? You are my mother,’” Smart told The Guardian. “This saved my life,” he said. Smart removed his Star of David armband and went to find his aunt and uncle, but a German officer stopped him before he could reach them.

“He takes out the gun, points it at my head and he says to me: ‘Tell me the truth, are you a Jew?’” Smart denied that he was Jewish and somehow, the officer believed him. His aunt and uncle paid a local farmer, Jasko Rudnicki, to hide Maxwell in the forest with his wife and 2 boys at their mud hut in the forest. But after his aunt and uncle were killed and authorities began to question Rudnicki, Maxwell was forced to live in the woods.

Before Maxwell went into hiding, the farmer taught him basic survival skills, such as what to eat, how to build a fire and trap a rabbit. Rudnicki allowed him to sleep in his barn at night when it was cold. “I built a bunker in the woods but was very lonely,” he told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Maxwell lived off of tree bark, half-eaten rabbit corpses and worms to survive. Occasionally, he would stop by Rudnicki’s hut for some milk or a piece of bread. He was 13 years old, alone and hiding in the woods from Ukrainians and Nazis searching for Jews. The only time he felt safe was when it was raining.

“It was a sport to kill a Jew,” he told The Guardian. “[Your typical Nazi] is not going to go in the mud and get dirty and filthy; he is doing it for happiness, for enjoyment. So when it was raining, I knew I was safe.”

Eventually, Maxwell found a friend in Janek, a boy of around 10, who had been hiding in the woods with his parents before they both disappeared. The boys became friends and lived in the bunker together. “He shared my sorrows, he shared my problems,” he told the BBC.

However, their friendship was short-lived. One day, the boys heard gunshots and after they investigated, found the bodies of several Jewish people on the other side of a river. They saw something moving amongst the dead bodies and after crossing the river, found a baby in a dead woman’s arms.

Soon after, they found the baby’s aunt in the woods, who took the baby into her care. Smart would later be reunited with the baby, Tova, in a TV special, “Cheating Hitler.” Sadly, after crossing the cold river, Janek became sick and died. “That was the biggest loss of my life. This young little boy was such a help to me to survive the war. My mother was gone, my sister was gone, my father was gone. I somehow accepted it. I still cannot accept Janek’s death,” Smart told the BBC.

A few months after Janek’s death, Smart visited Rudnicki and learned that the Nazi occupation was over and that he was free. “It was April 1944, I was almost 14 years old and I finally felt no fear. I was a human being once again,” he told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

In 1944, he successfully joined a group of Soviet soldiers, accompanying them through Romania and Hungary. In 1948, he relocated to Canada via the War Orphans Project, a refugee resettlement program overseen by the Canadian Jewish Congress. After relocating to Canada, he changed his name to Maxwell Smart to leave his tragic past behind him and focus on his new life. He chose the name years before it was popularized in the 1960’s James Bond parody, “Get Smart.”

He would build a successful real estate career while pursuing his lifelong passion for art.

After 70-plus years of keeping his harrowing experiences during the war to himself, Smart shared his story in the book “Chaos to Canvas” published in 2018 by the Azrieli Foundation. In 2019, he appeared in the documentary “Cheating Hitler: Surviving the Holocaust,” which ran on the Discovery Channel.

Smart’s story of survival was recently made into a film, “The Boy in the Woods.”

Selena Gomez has become a titan of business with Rare Beauty, so much so that Time just named Rare of one the 2024 TIME100 Most Influential Companies. Gomez has been taking care of business in her personal life, too, as she has happily discussed how much joy boyfriend Benny Blanco adds to her life. Pre-Blanco, though, Gomez was feeling so “alone” that she made a plan to have children on her own.

In the Time interview, Gomez explained, “I was alone for five years, and I got really used to it. A lot of people are afraid of being alone and I probably tortured myself in my head for like two years being alone, and then I kind of accepted it. Then I came up with my plan, which was I was going to adopt at 35 if I had not met anyone.”

Then she met Blanco. Gomez revealed she initially thought of him has a friend and even had him set her up with somebody. When the two went to a party to meet the mystery man, though, Gomez realized she was into Blanco.

She also spoke about how her experiences have led to her being cautious and how Blanco is different, saying, “I know what people can do to people I love. My own fans, who I adore and feel like have shaped who I am, will say the most hurtful things to me about how I live my life. But he has the strength in him that none of that noise fazes him. It’s really impressive, and I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon.”

Kids in 1966 shared their predictions for the year 2000 and it’s fascinating to see now

The idea of predicting the future has been the subject of countless books, movies and televisions shows (and is basically the basis of all gambling). Outside of a few uncanny instances, no one can tell exactly what the future holds, especially for the world at large. But people sure love to predict it anyway.

The BBC shared a video compilation of kids in 1966 sharing what they imagine the year 2000 would be like, and their predictions are fascinating. After five or six kids share, it becomes clear what some of the most pressing concerns of the 1960s were. Some kids thought we’d have bombed ourselves into oblivion. Others believed we’d be so overpopulated we would be packed like sardines and wouldn’t be able to build houses anymore.

Not all of the predictions were so dark. Some kids had some hilarious predictions about cabbage pills and robots. Others thought we’d have better cures for diseases and less segregation among the races, which we have.

Watch what these young folks envisioned nearly 40 years into their future—now more than 20 years into our past:

Thankfully, the year 2000 wasn’t as dire as many of these kids imagined it would be. In fact, hearing these predictions might even make us feel pretty good about how humanity has fared in the past 60 years.

How about the kid predicting the future of automation? Or the kid who said people would be regarded more as statistics than people? Or the one who predicted animals being kept in buildings instead of grazing so they could produce more?

And hey, props to the kids who didn’t predict an overpopulated nuclear hellscape. It can be hard to see negative news and not think the world is on a downward spiral. But if nothing else, seeing that these kids’ doom and gloom predictions didn’t come true is pretty heartening and a good sign that our own future may not be as dark as it sometimes appears.

Bill Skarsgård Details His ‘Gross’ Portrayal Of Nosferatu In Robert Eggers’ Upcoming Remake

bill skarsgard

Even though he’s been a clown, a killer, and soon enough a crow, Bill Skarsgård had not ventured into vampire territory until recently. It only made sense that he would eventually get to that side of the supernatural neighborhood, especially since his brother used to hang out there all the time.

Skarsgård (Bill, the younger one) will lead Robert Eggers’ upcoming gothic horror remake Nosferatu as Count Orlok, a haunting vampire who becomes obsessed with a young woman, played by Lily-Rose Depp. Nicolas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe also star.

The film has been in the works for years, and Skarsgård has been interested since the beginning because of Eggers. The actor told Esquire that he fought hard for the role because “you get a crush on someone — you can’t stop thinking about that person. I’ve only had it a few times, but that was so true with Robert. It was like, ‘Whatever this guy does, I just want to be a part of anything that this guy is making.’” And thus, he went after Nosferatu.

Even though he might not be the Edward Cullen of vamps, Skarsgård explained that his Nosferatu is a different kind of creepy. “He’s gross,” he said. “But it is very sexualized. It’s playing with a sexual fetish about the power of the monster and what that appeal has to you. Hopefully you’ll get a little bit attracted by it and disgusted by your attraction at the same time.”

The actor also revealed that the role took a lot out of him, probably because of the whole evilness part. “It took its toll. It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me,” he said.

Unlike his Pennywise debut, his Nosferatu look won’t be revealed just yet, though he reportedly spent six hours every day in makeup and prosthetics. Skarsgård said, “I do not think people are gonna recognize me in it.” Maybe it’s a good thing, considering the aforementioned grossness.

Nosferatu is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25.

Wilco Announces ‘Hot Sun Cool Shroud,’ A New EP That Serves As A ‘Cousin’ Addendum

Akash Wadhwani

Wilco has announced a new EP, Hot Sun Cool Shroud. The six-track project will arrive in conjunction with Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival, set to take place at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts.

The album follows 2023’s Cousin. Following the release of Cousin, Wilco lead vocalist Jeff Tweedy revisted material for the album the band recorded, but didn’t finish. He once again collaborated with engineering mixer Tom Schick to produce the six new songs.

“It’s fun to have something new to release at Solid Sound,” Tweedy said. “This year we’re putting out an EP with a summertime-after-dark kind of feeling. It starts off pretty hot, like heat during the day, has some instrumentals on it that are a little agitated and uncomfortable and ends with a cooling breeze. There are tracks on Hot Sun Cool Shroud that are more aggressive and angular than anything we’ve put out in a while, and a song about love melting you like ice cream into a puddle of sugary soup. All the pieces of summer, including the broody cicadas.”

Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Will Go By A Different Name In ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’

Joker 2 Folie A Deux Lady Gaga Harley Quinn
Warner Bros.

How will Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn be different than Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn or Kaley Cuoco’s Harley Quinn or even Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League‘s Harley Quinn? Well, for one thing, she won’t go by Harley Quinn.

In a recent interview with E! News at the premiere for her Gaga Chromatica Ball concert film, Lady Gaga discussed playing the latest big-screen iteration of Dr. Harleen Quinzel in Joker: Folie à Deux. “My version of Harley Quinn is Lee,” she said. “In many ways, I think this will be a very different Lee for people and I’m excited for people to see the story we want to tell.”

I get why Arthur Fleck would want to go by Joker. But Lee should have stuck with Harley (unless it’s a tribute to Lee Pace, then I understand).

“My version of Harley is mine, and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters, and I don’t want to give anything from the movie away,” Gaga told Access Hollywood, also at the Gaga Chromatica Ball premiere. “I think it’s really something you have to experience in the theater. This film has music. It has dance. It has amazing acting in it. I loved working with Joaquin [Phoenix]. I loved working with [director] Todd [Phillips]. What I will say is that I’ve never done anything like I’ve done in this movie before, so it’s all going to be completely brand new and really fun.”

Joker: Folie à Deux opens in theaters on October 4.

We Finally Know How Carmy Will Drive Everyone Up The Wall In ‘The Bear’s Season 3 Trailer: ‘The Vibe’s Weird!’

Last week, FX released a stress-filled teaser trailer for The Bear, which confirmed that there would be no rest after a successful second-season Family and Friends night at the overhauled eatery. A full trailer has now surfaced, and every indication is that this show will still have you on edge and loving every moment. Also, there’s been no secret about Carmy’s ability to get on everyone’s last nerve, but now, we know how he’s going to do it.

The extremely good news: Richie is still wearing suits. He’s also calling out the “scribblings of a madman” coming from Carmy.

The bad (but still good for us) news: Carmy might push everybody too far. His nonexistent emotional regulation (poor Marcus and his donuts) always left open the possibility that he’d eventually drive every chef up the wall. In this trailer, however, we’ll see how he’s getting that job done with the chefs feeling increasingly uncomfortable before Fak crows, “The vibe’s weird!”

There’s more. Carmy and Natalie have a loan to pay back with a self-induced short turnaround, and Uncle Jimmy is calling. Yet the dude in charge of the kitchen appears to be alienating even Sydney (with an unsettling Docusign agreement) and crushing morale with fine-dining perfectionism, and ugh, Claire still hasn’t fully walked away from a guy who has no room for romance in his head. Are you repelled but still intrigued? You’re not alone.

Pressure is on from every direction, and this place might blow. The synopsis reveals that Carmy will push his crew “to the highest level, all while doing their best just to stay in business. It’s a losing battle every single day,” and guess what? “Carmy pushes himself harder than ever, and demands excellence from his crew, who do their best to match his intensity.” Here’s more:

Their quest for culinary excellence will propel the crew to new levels and stress the bonds that hold the restaurant together. As the team grows in size, each member will strive to reach a greater level of service within their role. In the restaurant industry, you’re never on solid ground, and with that ever-changing landscape comes new challenges and opportunities. Our chefs have learned that every second counts, but this season we’ll find out if they have what it takes to make it to tomorrow.

The Bear returns on June 27.
