Katy Perry’s Final ‘American Idol’ Antics Included Batting Beach Balls And Chucking A Pizza Slice Into The Audience

In May 2017, ABC announced its revival of American Idol, and Katy Perry was the first judge attached to the new-look iconic singing competition show. The judges’ table was rounded out by Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, and the trio has remained together for seven seasons. American Idol has been renewed for another season, but Perry’s tenure ended with the Season 22 finale on Sunday, May 19.

Perry performed “What Makes A Woman” from her 2020 album, Smile, and while eating pizza and punching around beach balls from the judges’ table, Perry was showered with a tribute medley of her hits — “Teenage Dream,” “Dark Horse,” “California Gurls” — performed by this season’s top-12 girls. Perry posted a behind-the-scenes video to X (formerly Twitter) showing her tossing a piece of pizza into the audience. “A pizza my heart will always be on the #idol stage,” she wrote.

Perry’s Idol tenure was largely defined by viral moments. She was accused of mom-shaming and was booed, but Bryan defended her. Last April, Perry garnered comparisons to Tyra Banks on TikTok for how she delivered results to Idol contestants, and she recently suffered a wardrobe malfunction. All in all, it’s arguable that Perry’s presence was the most pop culturally relevant aspect of the show.

Perry detailed her plans to depart Idol during a February appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

“I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol,” Perry said. “I mean, I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you what I’m saying, Jimmy?”

The diamond-certified pop star additionally revealed she had “some things planned for this year” and that she’d “been in the studio for a while.” She added, “I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music.”

While American Idol is confirmed to return for a 23rd season, the show has not announced who will replace Perry as a judge alongside Bryan and Richie.

Victor Wembanyama And Chet Holmgren Headline The NBA All-Rookie Teams

The 2023-24 season was a pretty strong one when it came to rookies breaking into the league and finding success. That, of course, was headlined by top pick Victor Wembanyama living up to the hype as the Rookie of the Year (and being a Defensive Player of the Year finalist). This rookie class was also bolstered by 2022’s No. 2 pick, Chet Holmgren, who finally got on the floor for Oklahoma City and played extremely well after sitting out last year with a foot injury.

However, it wasn’t just top picks that impacted their teams, as a number of players from outside the lottery and second round enjoyed strong seasons. That’s reflected in this year’s All-Rookie selections, as the three ROY finalists headlined the squads alongside some lesser heralded prospects who had terrific first years in the league.

All-Rookie First Team

Victor Wembanyama (Spurs)
Chet Holmgren (Thunder)
Brandon Miller (Hornets)
Jaime Jaquez Jr. (Heat)
Brandin Podziemski (Warriors)

All-Rookie Second Team

Dereck Lively II (Mavs)
Amen Thompson (Rockets)
Keyonte George (Jazz)
Cason Wallace (Thunder)
GG Jackson (Grizzlies)

The closest race was for the final spot on the second team, with GG Jackson beating out Trayce Jackson-Davis by one point. Ausar Thompson, Scoot Henderson, and Bilal Coulibaly all also received double digit points in voting.

Dakota Johnson Realizes She’s A (Very Nervous) Lesbian In Max’s ‘Am I Ok?’ Trailer

“Actually, no, that’s not the truth, Ellen.”

With those seven words, Dakota Johnson made talk show history (by becoming one of the first celebrities to publicly call out Ellen DeGeneres on her bullsh*t). But the Suspiria star’s 2019 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show was important for another reason: it’s how Johnson met comedian Tig Notaro, who later asked the actress to star in her directorial debut, Am I OK?.

Am I OK? stars Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno (Devs, House of the Dragon) as Lucy and Jane, two best friends who think they know everything there is to know about each other until Lucy drops a secret: she’s a lesbian. “As Jane tries to help Lucy, their friendship is thrown into chaos,” the synopsis reads.

You can watch the charming trailer above.

“I took my whole coming out late story, and I used that, and I really based it on a real-life friendship with my best friend Jessica [Elbaum], who is also a producer on this movie,” Am I OK? writer Lauren Pomerantz told Entertainment Weekly. “I started writing it as a friendship movie based on our friendship. We had sort of a big fight, and then we’re friends again, but then simultaneously, I was struggling to come out. And so I realized that was the story that I really wanted to tell.”

Am I OK?, which was also directed by Stephanie Allynne, premieres on Max on June 6.

Watch a rescued beaver meticulously build an indoor ‘dam’ out of random household items

The fact that beavers build dams is one of nature’s coolest features. Gathering and stacking tree branches, rocks, grass and mud across a river so they can build their homes underwater is a unique instinct among the animals—and a strong one.

Apparently, it’s so strong that beavers will build dams anywhere, including inside a human’s house using whatever items they can find.

A video shared by Dr. Holley Muraco, director of research at the Mississippi Aquarium, shows a female beaver named Sawyer busily gathering stuffed animals, blankets, Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and more to build a dam in a hallway, and it’s seriously the most delightful thing ever.

Sawyer pauses once in a while to assess her work, which is adorable. And her ongoing struggle with SpongeBob SquarePants’ legs is a must-see.

If you’re concerned about seeing natural animal behavior like this in an unnatural habitat, don’t worry. Muraco explains that Sawyer spends most of her time outdoors with other beavers, but also likes to come in the house occasionally. More on Sawyer’s life story below, but first, behold her adorableness at work:

Sawyer is one of three orphaned beavers Muraco is rehabbing at her home with the help of Woodside Wildlife Rescue.

“Sawyer is one of a kind,” Muraco tells Upworthy. “Very opinionated and, as crazy as it sounds, intelligent. I raised Sawyer on a bottle in our home and then introduced her to Huck and Finn who are a bit older. All three were orphaned separately when their parents were killed. The three were sent to Woodside Wildlife to be raised as siblings.”

Sawyer, Huck and Finn. Perfection.

Muraco says Sawyer started building dams in her kennel as a tiny baby and then moved on to building bigger dams in the hallway. She lives outside with Huck and Finn, but she walks to Muraco’s back door when she wants to go inside to check on things and build a new dam.

Muraco says beavers are very social creatures and do better living in a group, but are also one of the most difficult animals to rehab. They have to spend up to two years with rehabbers, which is how long they would spend with their parents in the wild, and caring for them is challenging due to their complex and sensitive digestive needs. They are also prone to illness and there’s a lot that’s still unknown about vet care for them. Muraco says beavers are also considered a nuisance animal, especially in Mississippi, so it can be hard to find a safe place to release them.

In Muraco’s care, Sawyer, Huck and Finn get ample opportunities to practice instinctive behaviors, which is a vital element of rehabilitation. The ultimate goal is for them to return to the wild once they meet key milestones.

Raising beavers is a lot of work, but Muraco is dedicated to preparing these young ‘uns for life after rehab, both for their own good and for the environment. “Beavers are a keystone species and are often critical for healthy wetlands,” she explains. They are misunderstood creatures and are sometimes killed by people who simply see them as pests, which is one reason Muraco publicly shares her adventures with Sawyer, Huck and Finn.

“We are so excited that people are enjoying watching the beavers and falling in love with this unusual, quirky rodent,” she says.

If anyone wants to support these beaver rescue efforts, Muraco invites people to donate to Woodside Wildlife Rescue.

Clever woman figured out how to get the name and address of the person who stole her credit card

There was a massive jump in credit card fraud in America in 2021 due to the pandemic. According to CNET, fraud involving credit cards jumped 69% from 2020 to 2021, affecting 13 million Americans and costing $9 billion.

In a world where online transactions are part of everyday life, it’s hard to completely protect your information. But, by staying vigilant and monitoring your accounts you can report fraud before it gets out of hand.

A TikTok user by the name of Lauren (@absolutelylauren) from San Diego, California, got a notification that there was a $135 charge on her card at Olaplex’s online store that she hadn’t made. Olaplex sells products that repair excessively damaged hair. Before reporting the charge to her credit card company she asked her family members if they used her card by mistake.

“I don’t wanna shut my card down if it’s just my mom ordering some shampoo,” Lauren said in the video. “Definitely not my two younger brothers, they’ve got good hair but they don’t color it.”

After realizing the charge was fraudulent, most people would have called their credit card company and had their card canceled. But Lauren was curious and wanted to know who stole her information and used it to buy hair care products. So she concocted a plan to get their information. She called Olaplex’s customer service line asking for the name and address of the purchaser to see if it was made by a family member.

“Hey, can you help me with something?” Lauren asked Tanya, the Olaplex customer service agent. “If I can give you the time and date, purchase amount and card number and whatever could you let me know who placed an order?”

Tanya had no problem helping Lauren with her request.

@absolutelylauren

olaplex customer service is top tier 😤 #creditcardscam

“At this point, I’m willingly giving Tanya enough info to steal my card as well — she could have very well taken advantage of me in that moment but she didn’t,” Lauren said. “She comes back — tell me why she gave me the little scammer their full government name and address.”

Tanya revealed that a guy named Jason in a modest suburb in Texas used her card to buy a gift for his wife. “They also did it on Black Friday so at least they got a deal I guess, it was the gift set,” Lauren continued.

Lauren then called her credit card company and shared the information she had on the fraudster. The card company is currently investigating the situation.

One commenter thought that Olaplex wasn’t supposed to share that information with Lauren. “For some reason, I don’t think olaplex was supposed to give that info,” Arae270 said.

“I definitely gave them the option, but I explained that it was an unauthorized purchase, and if the name did not match anyone that I knew that I would just tell them to cancel the order and refund me, I told the girl that they would probably save everyone, a headache!” Lauren replied.

People should use utmost caution before deciding to track down a credit card thief. But kudos to Lauren for being clever enough to track down the person who stole her card information to help the authorities with their investigation. She didn’t put herself in harm’s way and if someone follows up on the tip, maybe they can prevent the same thing from happening to someone else.

Kevin Costner Has Now Issued His Own Looooong Explanation Of How His ‘Yellowstone’ Return Fell Apart

Kevin Costner Yellowstone
Paramount

The fifth and final season of Yellowstone began production this week, while former leading man Kevin Costner is over at Cannes being a different cowboy. But the drama is far from over amongst the former Yellowstone star, who is finally opening up about what went down at the ranch.

Costner had remained mostly quiet about his sudden exit and the drama that followed, seemingly to lessen any confusion for the cast and crew. He told GQ, “I’ve been quiet about the whole thing and I’ve taken a beating out there. My castmates are confused. The crew was confused.” Costner then said that he was, initially, fine with the various delays in production because he had loved working on the series.

“We very rarely started when we said we would, and we didn’t finish when we said we would. And I was okay with that. I really was. I was okay with it, but it wasn’t a trend that could continue for me,” he continued. After the Yellowstone crew announced plans to split the final season into two parts, Costner grew impatient. The first half of season five finished airing in January 2023, and the show was quickly put on hiatus. This caused scheduling issues for Costner’s post-Yellowstone passion project, Horizon, which he starred in and directed. “I said, ‘I have a contract to do Horizon, and I have people and money.’ I think there was a belief that I couldn’t get it mounted, but I didn’t really care what anybody believed.” This is where the messiness got… messier.

After going back and forth, Costner allegedly offered various compromises, but nothing was met, and more drama unfolded. “I said, ‘Well, if you want to kill me, if you want to do something like that,’ I said, ‘I have a week before I start. I’ll do what you want to do.’” As time went on, Costner became less cooperative and more pissed off about the situation. Costner’s “one week” comment quickly turned into a series of headlines claiming he refused to work for more than a week. “Somebody picked up the idea that I only wanted to work one week. And that has been a carryover thing that I have seen in magazines: that I’ve only wanted to work one week,” he told GQ.

This is what hurt Costner the most. “My big disappointment is I never heard Paramount or 101 really come to my defense and say, ‘That’s not true. He was going to do three more seasons.’” Costner said, to him, the truth was clear: “I started off only giving three seasons, ended up doing five and got embroiled in a thing that I don’t feel one person over there ever told the story correctly, ever, about what I had done and what I’ve been willing to do,” he explained. “That’s really f*cking bothered me, that none of them would actually try to set the record straight.”

When asked if he would ever return, Costner says that’s up to Sheridan. “I love that character. I love that world. I am a person that is very script oriented. And if the scripts aren’t there now, I need to know what I am. I want to make sure that the character lines up with what’s important to me too. And that’s pretty simple. That’s just between, again, Taylor and myself. Can we ever get there? I don’t know.”

On the other side of things, creator Taylor Sheridan has addressed Costner’s film. He told Hollywood Reporter last summer, “I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one. He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it.”

Meanwhile, this week in Cannes, Costner received a 7-minute standing ovation after the premiere of Horizon, and he promised/threatened moviegoers with three more installments. So… it might be a good one? Sorry, Taylor.

Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder Absolutely Ended Harrison Butker While Criticizing His Controversial Commencement Speech

Pearl Jam recently began their Dark Matter World Tour in support of Dark Matter, an album dubbed by Uproxx’s Steven Hyden to be Pearl Jam’s “best in decades.” Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder did not have such kind words for Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who has been under fire since giving a homophobic and sexist commencement speech at Benedictine College on May 11.

“You can see the kicker because he doesn’t have the pads because he doesn’t tackle anybody or get tackled,” Vedder said mid-concert at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas over the weekend. “But, you know, he was telling men, ‘Don’t forget to puff up your chest and be more masculine. Don’t lose your masculinity.’ The irony was that, when he was saying that, he looked like such a f*cking p*ssy.”

That last line earned laughter and loud cheers from the crowd.

Vedder continued, “There’s nothing more masculine than a strong man supporting a strong woman. Take that! People of quality do not fear equality.”

As relayed by Variety, Vedder also highlighted Deep See Diver, Pearl Jam’s openers, and noted, “The singer, Jessica, and the keyboard player, Patti, they must not have believed that ‘diabolical lie’ that women should take pride in taking a back seat to their man.”

NFL senior vice president and chief diversity inclusion officer Jonathan Beane released a statement that, in part, emphasized, “[Butker’s] views are not those of the NFL as an organization.” Benedictine College’s affiliated The Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica even posted a statement condemning Butker’s speech.

However, Gracie Hunt, daughter to Chiefs CEO and owner Clark Hunt, support Butker during her appearance on Fox & Friends, as did Tavia Hunt, her mother, on Instagram. Chiefs All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones also posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he loves Butker in response to a Change.org petition calling for the Chiefs to cut Butker from the team.

Rome Odunze On Building A Rapport With Caleb Williams And Why The Bears Won’t Shy Away From Expectations

The Chicago Bears are looking to enter a new era in 2024. After another mediocre season in 2023, the team found itself in a unique position as a team with some talent, but also getting a chance to add two real difference makers at the top of the Draft. That was thanks to trading the top pick a year ago to the Panthers, allowing Carolina to jump up for Bryce Young, and giving the Bears what became the No. 1 overall pick this year to go along with their own pick at No. 9.

After taking Caleb Williams with that first pick, the Bears decided to give him another weapon on the outside, drafting Washington star receiver Rome Odunze with their other top 10 pick. Odunze joins a suddenly loaded receiving corps in Chicago, with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, who Chicago traded for prior to the Draft. With Williams’ abilities as a passer, the receiver trio is looking at it as an opportunity and friendly competition, with Moore saying it’ll be a race to 1,000 yards.

For Odunze’s part, he’s excited to get in the building and learn from a pair of veterans who have played the game at a high level for years. The rookie receiver spoke with UPROXX by phone last week while at the NFLPA Panini Rookie Premiere, and we discussed his whirlwind last month, building a rapport with Williams on and off the field, the process of learning a new playbook, and why the Bears aren’t shying away from the expectations.

You’re at the Panini Rookie Premiere, now, what’s the event been like? And how cool is it to see yourself on a trading card?

Oh, it’s been awesome. It’s been a good experience thus far. You know, just got here last night. This morning, been running around, meeting everybody, and it’s been a good time. To see all the other rookies as well, it’s been special. It’s been awesome. Also, being with Panini, being able to see the process of making the trading card. You know, I haven’t seen the exact rookie card yet, so I’m excited to see what that looks like and hopefully collect all the ones that I can.

What have the last few weeks been like for you since Draft night, learning you’re going to be Chicago Bear, and getting in for a quick mini camp? How are you settling into your new life as a pro?

Yeah, I think that’s exactly how it’s been. You know, it’s just been me trying to settle in with the team, with everybody in the locker room, and the city of Chicago as a whole. So, it’s been a good experience. The support and everything from the organization, from the family has all been good. So, I’m just finding my way, getting settled, trying to find a spot, trying to find my routine in it all. But, taking it day by day and it’s all a blessing. I’m super grateful for it.

You’re now paired with Caleb Williams there in Chicago. What have you been able to learn about him on the field and off the field is is y’all build a connection that obviously you hope will last a long time?

Right, I think I’ve been building the relationship on and off the field. You know, he’s tremendously talented on the field. I think everybody knows that he’s able to do whatever he wants out there with his talent level and the way he studies the game. We’ve been studying plays together. He’s been helping me learn some stuff. And I’ve been giving him my input on other things, so it’s been great. And then just being able to bond with him, grow our relationship off the field as well has been awesome. You know, both coming in as rookies, both finding our place in all of this. So, it’s been a great thing to be able to be alongside of him.

In terms of building that relationship with a quarterback on the field, each one likes a little bit of a different thing in how you come out of breaks and depth on certain routes and those sort of things. How do you try to build that rapport as quickly as possible?

Yeah, I think it just comes through reps, honestly, just continually doing something over and over and over, so you can’t mess it up again. And that’s exactly what we’re doing. Learning the offense together is a good part of that. Building that foundation for each other, so we know the standard on each and every route and how things need to be ran and how the play needs to operate. So to have someone like that back there who’s a perfectionist, who wants everything to be right on the money, I appreciate that because I’m the same way in my wide receiver play. We have those things build off one another and have that collaborative relationship on it.

And what’s the process for you learning the playbook and getting that in hand from Shane Waldron and trying to learn it all? Because you’ll probably be moving around the field a little bit with that wide receiving corps and may be in certain spots, and what’s that process been like early on?

It’s been good. You know, I’m doing all I can. It’s a lot of information that they throw at you, and the offensive playbook in the NFL, every single team, it has a lot of depth to it and a lot of different nuances that you have to learn and remember like the back of your hand. I’m just continuing that process every day. Getting the installs, looking at them, and then going out there and running the routes, making sure it’s translating to the field. Being able to do that with Caleb and all the other vets, it’s coming. It’s a process, but it’s something that I think I’m growing at a good rate. I think learning my position and my role within the offense is something that is still to be determined, but I’m willing and able to do whatever.

You and Caleb are top 10 picks, but you’re coming into a team that has kind of built up its talent on the veteran side as well, especially at your position with Keenan Allen and DJ Moore. What are you excited to be able to learn from those two guys who have been in the league and played at a really high level?

Well to start with, their routine. Just learning their routine, how they’ve been able to be in the game for this long, what they do each and every day that people don’t see on camera, and the big highlight plays on the Instagram and the Twitter, wondering what they do behind the scenes that has led them to be as great as they are. So my first thing is learning those things. Then, when it comes to on the field, all their techniques and different things that they do within the route, I just sit back there with an open mind and soak up all that I can. Because when you watch both of them play, it’s something special, something you can always take one or two notes from each and every route they run. So, just taking a step back and learning from them, whatever I can.

I know a bunch of Bears fans, and this is about as excited as I’ve seen them coming into a season. Caleb has talked about not shying away from expectations, and how important is that in changing a culture and building a winning culture? To not be afraid of talking about wanting to win and wanting to do great things?

Yeah, no, absolutely. I believe in manifestation and putting that energy out into the world and it coming back to you. You can say those things, you can have affirmations in those things and believe in them, but it’s also about putting in the work. You know what I mean? And I think we’re a team, we’re individuals that are willing to say those things and be comfortable with it. Because it’s the reality of the situation. We know we have high expectations. And we believe in ourselves. We believe in our ability. But we match the work ethic with our word. I mean, we match the belief and the words with our work ethic. So being able to do those things with Caleb, I think it is an extraordinary thing to be able to go out there and say that, and also do it as well.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm feat
Getty Image

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Billie Eilish drop the latest Album Of The Year contender and Donald Glover refresh one of his Childish Gambino releases. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

Billie Eilish — “Lunch”

Billie’s pre-release explanation about “Lunch” generated some attention, when she said, “I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina.” Now that the track is here, it’s a clear album highlight with a fun groove.

Childish Gambino — “Little Foot Big Foot” Feat. Lil Nudy

2020’s 3.15.20 was a relatively under-the-radar release for Gambino, in that it’s the lowest-charting album in his discography. He just gave the project another shot, though, with Atavista, a spiffed-up version of the album. He tapped Quinta Brunson for his new “Little Foot Big Foot” video, which adds to Gambino’s legacy of high-effort visuals.

Zayn — “Stardust”

Although Zayn frequently falls out of the public eye, he has been relatively consistent with solo albums since the end of his time in One Direction. His latest LP, Room Under The Stairs, is here, and songs like “Stardust” show off his new country-inspired direction.

Omar Apollo — “Dispose Of Me”

Apollo has God Said No coming out this summer and he teased it a few days ago with “Dispose Of Me.” It’s a soulful slow-burner that shows him navigating the trouble of moving on.

aespa — “Supernova”

Given how successful they’ve been, it might be surprising that aespa doesn’t have a full-length album out yet. Armageddon is set to drop soon, though, and last week’s “Supernova” is a promising taste, a fiery tune merging elements of pop, hip-hop, and more.

NxWorries — “FromHere” Feat. Snoop Dogg and October London

Between his solo work and Silk Sonic, Anderson .Paak is a busy dude. Now he’s thrown NxWorries (his duo with Knxwledge) into the mix, too, as they dropped “FromHere” last week. The Snoop-featuring tune isn’t too stylistically removed from the soulful R&B of Silk Sonic, which we’ll happily take.

Rapsody — “Back In My Bag”

After nearly five years without a new album, Rapsody dropped Please Don’t Cry last week. She’s back in her bag on, well, “Back In My Bag,” a hard-hitting number that sees Rapsody celebrating her return.

Saweetie — “Nani”

Summer’s here and Saweetie is ready: “Nani” is a light, warm-weather tune that Saweetie describes as “a record about empowering yourself to walk through any room you enter feeling beautiful, confident, and unstoppable.”

Chance The Rapper and DJ Premier — “Together”

Chance The Rapper has become a household name since his last album, 2019’s The Big Day, by being a judge on The Voice. He can still bust out a song when he wants to, though, like last week’s “Together,” which sees Chance pleading for a more unified Chicago.

Miley Cyrus — “Psycho Killer”

Miley Cyrus has proven to be fantastic when it comes to covering classic tunes, so she was a perfect artist to contribute to Everyone’s Getting Involved: A Tribute To Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense, which just released in full. She delivers a rendition of “Psycho Killer” here, merging the original’s alternative energy with her distinct pop edge.
