‘Hit Man’s’ Adria Arjona On Being The Killer Rom-Com’s Wild Card

Adria Arjona
Merle Cooper

Glen Powell may be the headliner of Richard Linklater’s killer Netflix rom-com, Hit Man, but Adria Arjona is it’s secret weapon. While her co-star tries on caricatures like clothes, swapping wigs and accents, donning fake teeth and artificial scars to earn his “last great movie star” status (he does and is, by the way), she’s got the more difficult job. As Madison Masters, an alluring young woman trapped in an abusive marriage, Arjona slyly winks at that most recognizable of noir tropes: the femme fatale. She’s not the first bloodthirsty client to enlist the services of Powell’s Gary Johnson, a philosophy-teacher-turned-undercover-fake-hitman, but she is the most hopeless amongst the line-up, so sympathetic and morally grey that audiences will likely spend the near-two-hour film questioning her true motives.

“I wanted her to be this woman that you didn’t really know what she was going to do next,” Arjona tells UPROXX. “When we first meet her, she’s in this really dark place. She doesn’t really know where she stands or who she really is.”

It’s that ambiguity that makes Arjona’s scenes with Powell so electric. Well that, and the pair’s undeniable on-screen chemistry. Once Gary – who dons the suave exterior and deep V-necked uniform of a hit man named Ron for his first meeting with Maddy – convinces his mark to give up the murder-for-hire business and simply cut ties with her toxic ex, lines are quickly crossed. Meet-cutes turn into smoldering hook-up montages that singe the screen and bare-bodied bathtub soaks that double as romantic confessionals. Every seduction is tinged with deception, no one’s motives are completely pure. And yet, while it’s easy to root for Gary (and Gary-as-Ron) because the veil has already been pulled back on his id and ego, Maddy is a glaring unknown. She see-saws between desperation, terror, and a morbid curiosity about her new boyfriend’s chosen profession.

“She’s constantly reinventing herself and creating a fantasy, for herself and also for Ron,” Arjona explains. “She’s like, ‘I wonder what he likes.’ I think that makes her very unpredictable because that can shift, you know? When you read someone, you’re like, ‘Oh, he doesn’t like that, he likes this.’ It’s not stemming from a place of security, it’s very dependent on somebody else, and it just made it so much more fun to film as well.”

Arjona isn’t new to the expectations of Hollywood. She’s enjoyed the highs and lows that come with starring in everything from star-studded heist flicks – Triple Frontier and 6 Underground – to Marvel bombs (Morbius) and Star Wars success stories (Andor). She judges every potential project based on how nervous it leaves her. The more she questions if she can do a thing, the greater the possibility she’ll say yes. Whether it was a coffee meeting that went hours overlong or simply the thrill of working with one of her idols in Linklater, the actress was drawn to the questions the Netflix comedy mulls. Are our personalities set in stone? How well do you really know a person, or even, yourself? It’s something Arjona’s faced often, in her life and line of work. When she was younger, she traveled constantly with her dad, Guatemalan singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona, growing up in Mexico and Miami, staying close to her mother’s Puerto Rican roots before moving to New York.

“You’re constantly sort of shifting,” she says. “When I go home to Puerto Rico, it’s very different than when I go home to Guatemala. It is a different accent. Your body moves differently. You do have to sort of mold yourself. I am so grateful that I had the childhood that I did. I think it’s the reason why I’m an actress. I got the gift of being able to meet and have memories and experiences with so many different people from all over the world, different social classes and economic backgrounds and different languages. That really helped me.”

Maddy is a bit of a chameleon as well, soft, meek, and scared one minute, urging her lover to gun-down her ex in the middle of the street the next. She’s flawed, maybe even a bit unhinged, and when Gary begins to suspect her ulterior motives, Arjona’s comedic timing is unleashed. Powell might ooze charisma, smoothly commanding the screen, but Arjona is a live-wire, constantly throwing curveballs with her facial expressions and physical mannerisms that hint at the wild animal caged behind the persona Maddie’s presenting – to Ron, to the police, and maybe even to herself. These two, as Twitter would tell you, match each other’s freak, an easy thing to do when you’re acting opposite Powell.

“You just want to watch him,” she says of her co-star. “He’s incredibly talented and charming. He’s a writer, he’s a producer, he’s smart, he’s intentional. He shape-shifts and creates different characters and they’re all believable. I think looking at him, people think, ‘Oh, this is who Glen Powell is,’ and everybody is so wrong. He could be just about anything. I really don’t think there’s anything Glen Powell can’t do.”

She quickly amends that statement though, pointing out a gag early in the film that pokes fun at his character’s fashion sense.

“I do know. Wear jean shorts. Not his thing”

Hit Man is streaming on Netflix now.

Caitlin Clark On The Discourse Around Chennedy Carter’s Foul: ‘It Stinks How Much The Conversation Is Outside Basketball’

caitlin clark
Getty Image

Like many athletes who make the jump from college to the pros, Caitlin Clark has gone through growing pains during her rookie campaign in the WNBA. After winning a ton of games and posting gigantic numbers during her time at the University of Iowa, Clark is still trying to find her way at the start of her career in the W with the Indiana Fever. And while she’s been at the center of attention for some time due to her collegiate success, Clark has seen that amplified as a professional, most notably after a hard foul by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter that eventually got upgraded by the league to a flagrant 1 and led to some pretty wide-reaching discourse about the foul itself, Clark, and the state of WNBA coverage.

Ahead of the Fever’s game against the Washington Mystics on Friday night, Clark got asked by Christine Brennan of the Washington Post about the “controversy and conversation” around that game against the Sky, and what she felt about the discourse surrounding that moment. And while she did discuss the incident with Carter, Clark took a step back and looked at the big picture, as well.

“I’m not on social media, so I don’t see a lot of it, but you would be surprised,” Clark said. “Like, I still have my TV on in my house, and I’m watching sports, like, you’re still aware of it and you still see it. Other than that, my focus is basketball. Sometimes it stinks how much the conversation is outside of basketball and not the product on the floor, and the amazing players that are on the floor, and how good they are for their teams, and how great this season has been for women’s basketball, going from college basketball to, now, the WNBA. Some of the crowds are unprecedented and had never been seen before. The viewership’s amazing.

“But, yeah, I try to block it out,” Clark continued. “I don’t have social media on my phone, I don’t go on it, I don’t see a lot of it. But I don’t really think it’s that different from when I was in college. Everybody’s gonna have their opinion, everybody’s entitled to their own opinion. That’s just what it is, and I think you just gotta be focused on what’s in your locker room, what’s in your organization, how your teammates feel, how your coaches feel. And for me, that’s my focus, but also, I have a job to do at the same time. So, that’s where my focus remains.”

Clark is averaging 15.6 points, 6.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.3 steals a night for the Fever. While she has struggled to consistently find her shot and with turnovers, she leads the team in minutes, points, assists, and steals per game.

Nick Cannon Has The World’s ‘Most Valuable Balls’ After Insuring Them For $10 Million

nick cannon
Getty Image

Nick Cannon’s penchant for proliferation is a popular butt of a great many jokes, but it looks like the former standup comic is turning his ultra-productive private parts into a joke of his own. According to TMZ, the father of 12 recently took out a $10 million insurance policy on his testes.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Cannon said, “Haters say it’s time for me to stop having kids and put this super sperm to rest, but I’m doubling down on these valuable balls and my future kids.” The stunt appears to be a marketing ploy for an organic soap company called Dr. Squatch, which sponsored the insurance policy. In the promo part of his statement, Cannon joked, “Shoutout to Dr. Squatch for giving my balls the credit they deserve and hooking me up with the protection I need to keep this family tree rolling.”

Here’s the commercial, in which Cannon receives an award for “Most Valuable Balls”:

The jokes about Nick Cannon’s ever-growing collection of kids began in 2021, when he still had just seven of them, after Kevin Hart took out a bunch of billboards in Atlanta, LA, and New York giving out Nick’s phone number to call for “fatherhood advice.” The next year, Hart sent Cannon a vending machine full of condoms — which he apparently never used, because he had another three on the way by the end of that 2022.

His 11th child was born, fittingly enough, on November 11, 2022, while number 12 arrived in December, the 12th month. Cannon has since been asked about or remarked on his “super sperm” a number of times since then, even creating a fake game show to find the mother of lucky #13 (with Kevin Hart in tow, no less). Even Nick’s brother has joked around about having to Google his kids’ names (as the child of a parent with nine brothers and sisters, this disappoints me).

Cannon seems to be taking all the attention — and the ludicrous number of jokes at his expense — in stride, and as long he’s taking care of all those kids and not hurting anybody, it all seems in good fun. But still, he may want to consider Andy Cohen’s vasectomy suggestion — if only to keep the value on that insurance policy as high as it is.

We Tried Ice Cube’s Jack In The Box Munchie Meal – Is It Worth Ordering?

ice_cube_jack_in_the_box(1600x500)
Uproxx

There are two types of celebrity fast food meals. Some bring something genuinely new or interesting to the table, and then there are the blatant cash grabs. The former is always a welcome addition to the menu, especially because you don’t necessarily have to be a fan of the celebrity in question to enjoy said meal. The latter drives me up a wall. Fast food is getting greedy, and while there is an argument to be made that in some cases the scale and consistency of fast food can sometimes justify its rising price point, that argument rarely applies to celebrity meals.

These so-called celebrity meals usually consist of combinations of already existing foods, repackaged and sold with some promotional artwork and an inflated price. It’s not rocket science.

So when we heard Jack in the Box was launching a new Ice Cube-themed Munchie Meal, it gave us pause — mostly because of the price, $12. This year, more and more people are opting to eat at restaurants or higher-end fast-casual chains instead of the classic fast food chains because for a few dollars more you get more bang for your buck. So any fast food chain that has the audacity to sell us an expensive celebrity-themed meal better come bringing the goods.

While we’re skeptical, we’re cautiously optimistic considering we loved Jack in the Box’s Snoop Dogg Munchie Meal. The Snoop Dogg Munchie Meal was so well-thought-out that we named it the best fast food celebrity collab during last year’s annual Uproxx Golden Bag Awards. Will the Ice Cube Munchie Meal live up to its predecessor? We tasted it so you don’t have to. Here are our thoughts.

Ice Cube Munchie Meal

Dane Rivera

Like the Snoop Dogg Munchie Meal, this thing is huge, there is enough food to share with another person, you’ll just have to fight over who gets what. Inside you’ve got a Chick-N-Tater Melt, a Jack Taco, seasoned curly fries, Mini Churros, and a small Spite. Each meal is also supposed to come with an Ice Cube Emoji sticker — mine, unfortunately, did not.

What made the Snoop Dogg Munchie Meal work for me was its connection to the artist. Snoop Dogg is music’s biggest pothead, weed gives you the munchies; the meal came with a brownie, weed brownies are a thing — you see what I’m getting at here. The Munchie Meal felt like a tribute to Snoop Dogg before he even teamed up with Jack in the Box, so a meal with his co-sign just feels right. The Munchie Meal line’s connection to Ice Cube is a bit less elegant.

Which is to say, there is no connection. Ice Cube has a song called “Jack N The Box” with this gem of a line “Ice Cube/ Motherf*cking head so big they call him ‘Jack ’n the box.’” But whatever, we’re not mad at JiB for reaching out to Ice Cube over this throwaway line. If JiB wants to represent West Coast So-Cal rappers, who am I to stop them? As a fellow native of Los Angeles, I’m hardwired to like this stuff.

That said, ultimately all that matters is the food.

Dane Rivera

The centerpiece of the Ice Cube Munchie Meal is the Chick-N-Tater Melt. The sandwich consists of a fried chicken patty topped with shredded cheddar cheese, Swiss-style cheese, bacon, white cheddar sauce, ranch, and a hashbrown all stuffed into a croissant-style bun. I know this sandwich is a fan favorite, and it’s been over a year since the Chick-N-Tater melt was last on the menu, but… I’m not seeing the appeal here.

The sandwich is a medley of salty and buttery flavors, but it lacks balance. Its weakest aspect is the protein. The bacon is thin and lifeless, and the chicken patty is so heavily processed that at times I wondered if I was eating chicken at all. Luckily, there are aspects of this sandwich that work. The crunchy texture of the hashbrown and its buttery flavor pair well with the salty mix of cheeses, while the ranch provides a rich savory finish. But that’s not enough to make a sandwich work in my opinion, so while I wouldn’t go as far as calling this sandwich “bad,” I can’t call it “good” either.

In addition to the sandwich, you’ve got curly fries, which are always good and feature a wonderfully addictive flavor that combines onion powder, black pepper, and garlic. A Jack Taco, which isn’t going to win any blind taste tests, but it hits the spot when you’re under the influence. And for dessert, you’ve got Mini Churros, which taste like, well, you know, churros. I’m not mad at any of the sides in this dish, it’s the sandwich that failed to win me over.

The Bottom Line:

The Ice Cube Munchie Meal is… fine. As a Cube and West Coast hip hop fan I wanted it to be better, but for me, it failed to deliver and live up to last year’s Snoop Dogg Munchie Meal. If you’re already a super fan of Jack in the Box, particularly the Chick-N-Tater Melt, I’d say this is worth the pickup. But if you haven’t been to JiB in a while, the Ice Cube Munchie Meal isn’t a reason to go.

SNX: This Week’s Best Sneakers, Feat. The Kobe 4 Protro Girl Dad, Air Jordan 6 White and Black (Reverse Oreo) & More

kobe_snx(1600x500)
Uproxx/Getty

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet. June is off to a great start regarding sneaker drops, this week we’re just shy of the full list of 10. Now that we’re halfway through the year we can sit back and reflect on the year in sneakers and it’s been a strong one so far. Almost every week this year sneakerheads have been hit with some pretty hard decisions. There are just too many great drops to cop.

This week brings a couple of notable brand collaborations including Nike and Di’Orr Greenwood as well as Converse and Carhartt Wip. On the non-collab front we’ve got new Nike Air Force 1s, New Balance’s latest 990v4, new LeBrons and Kobes, and what is obviously the highlight of the week — the Air Jordan 6 Reverse Oreo.

There are a lot of great sneakers to get to, so let’s jump into the best drops of the week, and where to buy them.

Nike SB Dunk Hi Decon x Di’Orr Greenwood Turquoise Blue and Firewood Orange

Price: $145

Nike has linked up with Di’Orr Greenwood for rich and colorful take of the SB Dunk. Born and raised in the Diné Bikéyah Navajo Nation, Greenwood pays tribute to the artistic community of her upbringing with a sneaker that combines the rich colors and celestial interests of that community.

The sneaker features a plush suede upper with a colorblock design, custom insoles, and reflective celestial details across the Swoosh and toebox. With all its intricate details, it’s the sort of design that you can really get lost in.

The Nike SB Dunk Hi Decon x Di’Orr Greenwood Turquoise Blue and Firewood Orange is out now for a retail price of $145. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT.

Converse CONS x Carhartt WIP CTAS Pro

Converse

Price: $100
Converse as teamed up with Carhartt WIP for a workwear take on the classic Chuck Taylor All-Star Pro. The sneaker sports triple-stitched detailing for
added durability, a two-tone design, and suede paneling.

The durable rebuild is made with functionality in mind. Designed to handle all the abuse that comes with skateboarding along with the elastic tongue straps for a more secure fit, CX foam sockliner cushioning, and extra grippy CONS traction rubber outsole.

Rounding out the design are co-branded details throughout, and a classic Carhartt colorway.

The Converse CONS x Carhartt Wip CTAS Pro is out now for a retail price of $100. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Converse CONS x Carhartt WIP One Star Academy Pro

Converse

Price: $95
If you’re not feeling the Chuck Taylor, Converse’s second most popular sneaker, the One Star, is also getting the Carhartt treatment. Like the All-Star, this sneaker features triple-stitched detailing, co-branded logos, the same three-tone colorway, and a fit that has been optimized for street skating.

The Converse CONS x Carhartt WIP One Star Academy Pro is out now for a retail price of $95. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Air Force 1 Black

Nike

Price: $140

If you’re in the market for an all-black AF-1, now is your chance to cop a fresh pair. What sets this one apart from other AF-1s is the perforated leather upper. That should drop the weight of the sneaker just a bit, while providing an airier fit that is perfect for the rising temperatures of summer.

Rounding out the design are vibrant Royal Blue insoles.

The Nike Air Force 1 Black is out now for a retail price of $140. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike

Nike LeBron XXI Metallic Gold

Nike

Price: $210

LeBron and Nike linked up with The Shop for a special Metallic Gold take on the LeBron 21. The sneaker takes inspiration from the ripples and fabric of a velour durag with a brilliant shimmering Metallic Gold upper with black and white accents, with a zebra pattern outsole.

The sneaker rides on a Zoom Air unit for a bouncy fit. It’s an interesting design for a basketball sneaker, it looks elevated, refined, and luxurious, and yet you could play ball in a pair. That can’t help but remind us of the concept of the Air Jordan 2. Which is our way of saying, the Air Jordan 2 is still underrated and was ahead of its time!

The Nike LeBron XXI Metallic Gold is set to drop on June 7th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $210. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Kobe 4 Protro Girl Dad

Nike

Price: $190

This is, what, the sixth or seventh Kobe drop of the year? Keep ‘em coming Nike! As the name would suggest, this is a Kobe 4 for Girl Dads. The phrase is printed on the inner tongue and was inspired by the bond between the late Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi. It’s a bit bittersweet, like all of the Kobe releases this year.

The sneaker is dressed in a bicoastal green upper that matches the color of one of Kobe’s favorite meanies and sports a mix of premium materials across its build. Rounding out the design are chrome heel clips and an icy outsole.

The Nike Kobe 4 Protro Girl Dad is set to drop on June 7th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $190. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Nike Zoom Vomero 5 Lime Green

Nike

Price: $160

If last week’s Royal Blue Vomero 5 wasn’t doing it for you, how are you feeling about Lime Green? The sneaker exudes summer vibes with its bright green mesh upper and synthetic black-to-white overlays. Over the tongue is a bright pink stripe and pink insoles, which are a nice touch and point of contrast against the upper.

Reflective details at the heel and toe are rounding out the design, for enhanced night visibility. Though let’s be honest, everything about this design enhances visibility, you couldn’t miss these sneakers if they tried!

The Nike Zoom Vomero 5 Lime Green is out now for a retail price of $160. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like Flight Club.

New Balance Made in USA 990v4 Hi Lite With Deep Ocean

New Balance

Price: $209.99

Yo Nike, take note of what New Balance is doing. This is how you do lime green! This 990v4 comes out of NB’s Made in USA line and sports a white mesh upper with faded lime suede overlays, over an off white midsole with touches of black at the outsole and branding.

The Hi-Lite joins New Balance’s Summer 2024 Seasonal Collection, which as far as we’re concerned, may be the best collection of designs the brand has
dropped all year.

The New Balance Made in USA 990v4 Hi Lite with Deep Ocean is set to drop on June 7th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $209.99. Pick up a pair at New Balance.

New Balance

Air Jordan 6 White and Black (Reverse Oreo)

Nike

Price: $200
I genuinely feel bad for all the sneakers dropping this week because no matter how cool a release, it’s not the Air Jordan 6 Reverse Oreo. This colorway is legendary. First released on the Air Jordan 4 in ’99, the sneaker has long been a coveted collector’s item, and now it’s coming to the Air Jordan 6!

Because this pair isn’t a collector’s item, you won’t feel any guilt about wearing them until they fall apart. Could you do the same if this was an actual Jordan 4 Reverse Oreo? I mean, I know what I would do! The sneaker sports a leather upper over a speckled midsole with a translucent outsole.

The Air Jordan 6 White and Black is set to drop on June 8th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $200. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app or aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

Will There Be A Third Season Of ‘Your Honor’?

your-honor-post.jpg
Showtime

Showtime’s legal drama Your Honor wrapped up its second and final season last year, but after dropping on Netflix, the series is finding a whole new audience. Who could have predicted this?

The series stars Bryan Cranston as a New Orleans judge whose son accidentally becomes involved in mob-related murder. Hunter Doohan, Hope Davis, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Michael Stuhlbarg also star.

While Showtime confirmed in 2022 that the second season would be the last, if the series gets enough momentum and interest, it would not be that far-fetched for Netflix to order another round of episodes. We’ve seen it before! But for now, the two seasons are all we get.

In March 2023, showrunner Joey Hartstone addressed the idea of a third season. “It’s definitely above my pay grade,” he said on Tales From Yaya. “You know Season 1 ended and we thought that was going to be it. Obviously, there was a Season 2. I think the hope is always that a show will be successful and well-liked by its audience enough that there can be a future somehow. It’s not my call but I would be happy to see it continue.”

On the other hand, the show wrapped up Cranston’s storyline, but he does have interest in returning to produce a different storyline. “I’d be very interested in producing that,” he told Deadline last spring. “I don’t know about being in it because my guy’s back in prison.” When has the idea of prison been enough to stop Cranston’s characters? Or even Cranston himself?

Your Honor is now streaming on Netflix.

2 Live Crew’s Brother Marquis’ Cause Of Death Has Been Revealed

The cause of 2 Live Crew rapper Brother Marquis’ death has been revealed, days after his passing was announced. According to the Chief Deputy Coroner at Etowah County Coroner’s Office, Dantez Robinson (via TMZ), Marquis, whose real name was Mark Ross, suffered a massive heart attack, confirming that there were no foul play or other substances involved.

Mark’s death was announced on Monday (June 3) by the official 2 Live Crew Instagram account. “Mark Ross AKA Brother Marquis of the 2 Live crew has passed away,” the announcement read. Shortly afterward, tributes to Brother Marquis began pouring in from other hip-hop luminaries, including his bandmate Luther Campbell, aka Uncle Luke. “My Condolence goes out to the Family of Brother Marquis and so many of his Fans from around the World after learning his passing,” Luke wrote. “We took on so many fights for the culture made Great music together something I would never forget.”

Those fights included legal battles over freedom of speech in hip-hop, encompassing disputes over “obscene” subjects and rap’s right to parody popular culture. Their third album, As Nasty As They Wanna Be, was declared obscene in court, only to have a court of appeals overturn the verdict, while their song “Pretty Woman” was the center of a lawsuit over copyright infringement of Roy Orbison’s hit “Oh, Pretty Woman.” The 2 Live Crew version was deemed a fair use of the original, with Orbison’s publisher withdrawing an appeal of the suit and settling out of court.

No one noticed what this woman was staring at when they chose her for their label

Lately, art history majors have become something of a pop culture punching bag. Not only has the phrase become short-hand for “unemployable in today’s economy,” they’ve also been ridiculed by President Barack Obama on national television.

But will the gentle art of aesthetic study finally get the last laugh?

Middle Earth Organics is known for their organic pasta sauces, each label featuring a famous Italian painting.

While this would normally be an NBD, the painting they chose for their tomato and porcini mushroom sauce has been stirring up controversy online.

art history, art, culture

The woman in the painting above is not staring with intense concentration at a pot of delicious, simmering sugo.

The image is “Judith Beheading Holofernes,” a painting by Caravaggio. Judith, seen above, is not making an al dente delight. Judith is cutting off some dude’s head.

As 11points.com noted, “That unfortunate painting selection could’ve been avoided if they’d just hired an art history major.” You heard it here folks. Pasta sauce companies: the future of global arts employment.

Men try to read the most disturbing comments women get online back to them.

Trigger warning for discussion of sexual assault and violence.

A recent video by Just Not Sports took two prominent female sportswriters and had regular guys* read the awful abuse they receive online aloud.

Sportswriters Sarah Spain and Julie DiCaro sat by as men read some of the most vile tweets they receive on a daily basis. See how long you can last watching it.

*(Note: The men reading them did not write these comments; they’re just being helpful volunteers to prove a point.)

It starts out kind of jokey but eventually devolves into messages like this:

reporters, news, human resources

These types of messages come in response to one thing: The women were doing their jobs.

Those wishes that DiCaro would die by hockey stick and get raped? Those were the result of her simply reporting on the National Hockey League’s most disturbing ordeal: the Patrick Kane rape case, in which one of the league’s top players was accused of rape.

DiCaro wasn’t writing opinion pieces. She was simply reporting things like what the police said, statements from lawyers, and just general everyday work reporters do. In response, she received a deluge of death threats. Her male colleagues didn’t receive nearly the same amount of abuse.

It got to the point where she and her employer thought it best to stay home for a day or two for her own physical safety.

The men in the video seemed absolutely shocked that real live human beings would attack someone simply for doing their jobs.

broadcast news, female reporters, discrimination

Most found themselves speechless or, at very least, struggling to read the words being presented.

hate speech, slander, sexualization

Think this is all just anecdotal? There’s evidence to the contrary.

The Guardian did a study to find out how bad this problem really is.

They did a study of over 70 million comments that have been posted on their site since 2006. They counted how many comments that violated their comment policy were blocked.

The stats were staggering.

From their comprehensive and disturbing article:

“Although the majority of our regular opinion writers are white men, we found that those who experienced the highest levels of abuse and dismissive trolling were not. The 10 regular writers who got the most abuse were eight women (four white and four non-white) and two black men. Two of the women and one of the men were gay. And of the eight women in the ‘top 10’, one was Muslim and one Jewish.

And the 10 regular writers who got the least abuse? All men.”

harassment, feminism, culture, community

So what can people do about this kind of harassment once they know it exists?

  1. To start? Share things that make people aware it’s happening. Listen to the Just Not Sports podcast where they talk about it.
  2. If you know someone who talks like this to anyone on the internet, CALL THEM OUT. Publicly, privately — just let them know it’s not OK to talk to anyone like this.
  3. Don’t stop talking about it. Every day, the harassment continues. Don’t let it linger without attention.

There are no easy answers. But the more people who know this behavior exists, the more people there will be to tell others it’s not OK to talk to anyone like that.
