Zendaya Opened Up About Her Ongoing Struggles With Anxiety: ‘I Tend To Isolate Myself’

Zendaya has already starred in two major blockbusters this year alone, and it’s only June. But while the actress’ major success over the past few years might make it seem like she is on top of the world, she’s just like one of us regular folks and sometimes gets afraid to leave the house! Who among us can’t relate?

The Challengers star opened up to Vogue about misconceptions people have about her. “I think sometimes people assume that because of what they see of me, maybe I’m a certain way,” she began.

But despite her impeccable work ethic, the actress revealed that she also struggles with anxiety. “But when I’m not working, I tend to isolate myself. My therapist, family, and friends will tell me, ‘You need to get up and get out,’ and I never want to—but when I make myself do it, I realize it’s actually kind of nice. I’m less anxious. I have to really be intentional about taking care of myself. I’m learning to be more responsible for myself and for my own body and looking after it all.”

When asked about how she copes, the actress revealed that walking her dog and taking things one step at a time has helped her the most. “Sometimes it’s just getting out of bed, telling myself, ‘We’re facing the day: we’re taking a shower, we’re putting on real clothes, we’re seeing some sunshine.’ I try to set little challenges for myself.” These challengers are very unlike the ones shown in Challengers, but that’s for the best!

For now, Zendaya says she’s shifting her focus to breathwork to help cope with her hectic life. “I’m just learning the importance of breathwork and meditation now. I’ve been living on a set and working since I was a kid, but it’s never been something that was accessible to me. I was just going, going, going, going, going. I feel like I’ve been holding my breath for a very long time.”

She’s not the first actress to get real about anxiety in the spotlight: her boyfriend Tom Holland has been open about his mental health struggles and often takes social media breaks to protect himself against “spiraling.” Both superheroes and tennis stars need a break sometimes.

Kaytranada And Childish Gambino Fall For A ‘Witchy’ Girl On Their Groovy Collaboration From ‘Timeless’

Kaytranada’s new album Timeless is out today featuring collaborations with Rochelle Jordan (“Lover/Friend“), Channel Tres (“Drip Sweat“), Dawn Richard, Tinashe, Anderson .Paak, and more.

On one standout track, “Witchy,” Kaytranada taps Childish Gambino in full, 1980s lover boy crooner mode, to recount his experiences being bewitched by a woman with whom he finds himself falling in love. Kaytranada reportedly began teasing snippets of the track as far back as 2022, sharing them to his Instagram Story and playing it at shows, leading to fans calling it “2:15 AM,” due to an early lyric in which Glover sings, “Magic / It’s something special in the moment / It’s 2:15 up in the mornin’ / I’m talkin’ to you, but I’m really tryna hold your hand.”

Both artists have made notable returns after relatively quiet periods — although neither really went away. While Timeless is Kaytranada’s first album since 2019’s Bubba, he’s stayed busy, producing projects for IDK and Aminé. Meanwhile. Gambino, who recently released Atavista, an updated version of 3.15.20, after spending the past few years focusing on screen projects like Mr. And Mrs. Smith and Swarm.

Timeless is out now via RCA Records. You can find more info here.

Boston’s Defense Flexed Its Muscles In Its Game 1 Win Over Dallas

The Boston Celtics‘ offense came out of the gates in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals on fire. The numbers were undeniable: They shot 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) from the field, a scorching hot 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) from three, and nine of their makes were assisted in the first quarter. Kristaps Porzingis came off the bench and looked as good as you can after missing a month-plus with a hamstring injury, and was gigantic as the Celtics went from trailing the Dallas Mavericks by one point to opening up the largest lead after one quarter (17 points) in NBA Finals history. Outside of Jayson Tatum turning the ball over three times, everything was clicking.

And then, over the final three quarters of the game, the Celtic offense came back to earth a bit. From the second quarter on, Boston’s three-point shooting fell off — they only went 9-for-27 (a 33.3 percent clip) for the remainder of the game — and by the time they wrapped up a 107-89 victory, they team only posted an offensive rating of 115.1. All the caveats about one game vs. an entire season go here, but an offensive rating of 115.1 would have been 16th in the league this regular season, nestled right in between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

To be clear, Boston’s historically good offense (which had an ORtg of 122.2 this regular season) did more than enough to win on Thursday night, and the game state the rest of the way was largely determined by how well it performed in the opening 12 minutes. But the reason they won Game 1 so convincingly revolved around their performance on the other end of the floor. The Celtics’ defense was nothing short of magnificent from start to finish, as they did a brilliant job dictating the terms of engagement against a good but flawed Dallas offense.

The Mavs could not get much of anything going — their 89 points were the fewest they’ve put up in a playoff game this year. Their seven made threes and 27 attempts from deep were their second-lowest marks in a single game during the postseason. While Luka Doncic put up 30 points, Thursday marked the first time in his playoff career in which he only had one assist — his previous low in a single playoff game during Dallas’ run to the Finals this year was five.

The thing that makes Doncic such a special basketball player is not his relentless ability to score, although that is certainly a part of the equation. It’s his ability to make his teammates better just by how he gives them the basketball. Guys like Doncic (or LeBron James, or Nikola Jokic, or any of the special playmakers that we’ve seen in the league over the years) are able to use their gravity and their ability as passers to get ball into the hands of their teammates in the exact spot — both on the floor and in the shooting pocket — that they want. Doncic’s passing opens things up for his teammates, who hit shots, who open things up for Doncic, which leads to a cycle that overwhelms opponents.

Boston’s solution to this: Take away the stuff that the Mavs want on the other end of Doncic’s passes. The point has been made, over and over again, that Joe Mazzulla wants the Celtics to win the math game, that he understands three points is worth more than two points, and as a result, they attempted more threes per game than anyone else in the NBA this season. Jason Kidd also understands this, as Dallas was second in attempts per game on the year. The Mavs especially place a premium on getting guys like P.J. Washington and Derrick Jones Jr. looks from the corner — Dallas led the league with 11.3 attempts per game from the corner. A remarkably high 65.5 percent of Jones’ three-point attempts this postseason come from the corner, while that number is 57.8 percent for Washington.

Again, when those guys hit those shots, the court becomes larger. There is more space for Doncic and Kyrie Irving, which opens up more space for themselves and for the lobs to Daniel Gafford and Dereck Lively Jr. that have become such a threat this postseason. Instead, Boston just cut their water off entirely — as a team, the Mavs went 1-for-3 on corner triples, and you can read a very good breakdown of how they did that via Joe Viray of SB Nation right here. Gafford and Lively combined for four total field goal attempts — they made all of them, but two were putbacks, one came off of a Doncic pass, and one came off of a pass by Washington. Beyond the fact that Doncic only had one assist, Tim MacMahon noted that Mavs players only shot 1-for-6 off of shots he got them — if Luka Doncic is only able to generate six shots for his teammates, Dallas has absolutely no chance to win this series.

Mixed with the fact that Boston’s defense smothered Irving — he went 6-for-19 from the field, missed all five of his attempts from three, and did not have an especially good time against the duo of Jrue Holiday and Derrick White — we witnessed a defensive masterclass from the Celtics, one in which they were happy to let Doncic get his as a scorer and nothing else really worked. It’s the unique problem Boston causes teams, and is why they were second in the league in defensive rating. When they are all locked in, the six guys they lean on the most (White, Holiday, Jaylen Brown, Tatum, Porzingis, Al Horford) all range from “very good” to “elite” on the defensive end of the floor. There just aren’t a ton of places to consistently attack, and even Sam Hauser was able to get the better of Doncic at one point in the game.

Trading for Holiday and Porzingis wasn’t viewed as an especially big risk because of how well they fit into the Celtics’ existing infrastructure, and while we saw that pay off all regular season, Porzingis’ injury in the first round meant that it had been a minute since we saw exactly how good the Boston defense is at its absolute best. Game 1 of the NBA Finals was not just a reminder, it was an emphatic statement that the Mavs have quite the uphill task ahead of them. Doncic and Irving are two of the league’s best problem solvers, and it’s certainly possible that they’re going to find something to exploit between now and the start of Game 2. But if they can’t — or, if they can but Boston has an answer for it — the Celtics defense is going to lead the way to a championship.

YG’s NSFW ‘Shake’ Video With Kaliii And Stunna Girl Is A Beach-Bound Booty Buffet

YG knows how to play the hits. With his new project Just Re’d Up 3 on the way, the Compton rapper has been getting back to basics with singles custom-made to turn up the function. First, there was “Knocka,” which hearkened back to the party-ready anthems of his debut album, My Krazy Life. Then, there was “Weird,” which some fans interpreted as a Drake diss (it wasn’t). Today, YG delivers the third single, “Shake,” which features Kaliii and Stunna Girl, along with a beach-bound, borderline-NSFW music video.

The song and its video both feel like callbacks to YG’s 2017 single “Pop It, Shake It” (the original version) from the uptempo beat and instructive chorus to the raunchy, booty-filled visuals — which, to be fair, are significantly tamer than the older video’s. Still, try not to watch “Shake” at your desk if you work in an office, or face some potentially awkward conversations. Also, sorry, but Kaliii and Stunna Girl don’t actually appear in the video, although based on some of their own output, they would fit right in. They also spit some very aggressive, but technically impressive verses.

You can watch YG’s “Shake” video above.

Just Re’d Up 3 is due in July via 4 Hunnid.

Nicole Kidman Has A Promising Update For ‘Big Little Lies’ Season Three

big-little-lies.jpg
HBO

Good news for fans of Nicole Kidman’s wigs and Young Sheldon: Big Little Lies season three is definitely a go.

Kidman has been steadily leaking information and talking it up for months, much to the dismay of Reese Witherspoon. But now it seems like it’s really coming together.

Witherspoon and Kidman reunited for a Vanity Fair interview, where Witherspoon said “This one has already said too much,” referring to Kidman spilling the beans about the future of the hit HBO drama. Kidman responded, “I got excited! We need to shut up. There’s a whole thing about how you should never talk about something until you’ve done it because if you talk about doing it then it’s the dopamine hit of doing it and you feel like you’ve done it. It’s a scientific study,” she explained.

Despite the scientific study, Kidman did not shut up. In fact, she revealed that Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty is hard at work on the story. “We’re moving fast and furious. Liane [Moriarty] is delivering the book. We’re in good shape,” Kidman revealed.

While the show, based on the book of the same name, was initially supposed to be a limited series in 2017, a second season was released in 2019, with the entire main cast returning for more drama. Plus Meryl Streep!

We can thank Kidman’s daughter for the uptick in interest. Earlier this year, she said that her daughter wasn’t satisfied with Celeste’s ending. “My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, ‘Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,’” Kidman told Elle in March. “She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise.’” Maybe we will finally see the infamous ice cream throwing scene that was taken from us.

A Phish Fan Was Reportedly Banned From The Las Vegas Sphere After Smoking A Bong At The New Venue

The Sphere in Las Vegas
Getty Image

In a move that’s equal parts hilarious and outrageous, the Las Vegas Sphere has banned a man from the venue after he posted of video of himself doing a bong rip at a Phish show that went viral online (no, it wasn’t Uproxx’s Steven Hyden, although you gotta admit, that’d be even funnier). While t’s absolutely ludicrous to book Phish to perform anywhere in the world and expect their fans to not show up and get baked, the venue does have a pretty strict policy, and as it turns out, he did kind of bait the operators into a response.

According to Rolling Stone, the fan, who refused to give his real name, posted the video to his Instagram account, @acid_farts, ahead of a 4/20 Phish concert at the Sphere. In the caption, he wrote, “First bong hit to ever be ripped in the @spherevegas @phish Somebody call @guinessworldrecords 4/20/24.” He declared himself the first to take a bong rip at the venue — which probably isn’t true, all things considered.

While his fellow fans and followers were clearly delighted by his rebellious display, apparently, the Sphere’s management was not. Mr. Farts made plans to see another stoner favorite band, Dead & Company, at their ongoing residency at the Sphere, but after he attempted to purchase the tickets online, he says he was sent a legal notice by FedEx a few days before the show notifying him of his ban.

“I opened it up, and there was this letter saying you’re banned from going to the Sphere,” Mr. Farts told Rolling Stone. “I was like, I’m literally leaving for the Sphere right now.”

In addition to the Sphere, Mr. Farts is also banned from several other venues operated by the Sphere’s ownership group, including Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, the Beacon Theatre, the Chicago Theatre. He appears to be taking the ban in stride, although he seems down about never getting to see The Rockettes. With that said, there’s something a little tragic about what this says about the corporatization of art (seriously, if you’re booking Phish and Dead & Co., this sort of thing kinda comes with the territory) and about the degradation of privacy thanks to technology.

And yes, there is already a “free @acid_farts” comment campaign.

‘The Boys’ Showrunner Has Addressed How ‘Gen V’ Will Navigate Chance Perdomo’s Death In Season 2

Chance Perdomo Amazon Prime Video
Brooke Palmer/Amazon Prime Video

Chance Perdomo tragically passed away earlier this year in a motorcycle accident while en route to Gen V‘s second-season production. The 27-year-old rising Chilling Adventures of Sabrina actor portrayed Andre Anderson, a popular Godolkin University student who was clumsy with his developing powers but figured prominently into the overall story. Following Perdomo’s death, the show put the brakes on production while producers revealed that Chance’s role wouldn’t be recast, and The Boys showrunner (and Gen V executive producer) Eric Kripke is now revealing how plans are proceeding to continue without Perdomo.

That could prove to be tricky, given that Chance’s character was present in the season’s final moments with his fellow Supes as they found themselves confined to a hospital-like setting that could be The Woods. Yet although the character was alive and well, Kripke and the other producers decided to write the death of Andre Anderson into the second season’s beginnings. How that will be folded into the existing story remains to be seen, but Kripke believes that this was the appropriate line of action, as he told TV Line while also addressing the sadness of the situation:

“First, it’s just so unbelievably tragic, and my heart goes out to his family. We’re not trying to replace him because we can’t. We’re playing the character’s death on the show. So it’s very heavy and it’s really emotionally difficult for the cast. And we’re just trying to honor Chance as best we can.”

Gen V did proceed with filming a few weeks ago in Toronto with a likely 2025 release window. Meanwhile, The Boys‘ fourth season will premiere on Prime Video (Amazon) beginning on July 16.

Is Glen Powell’s ‘Hit Man’ Based On A True Story?

Hit Man
Netflix

Richard Linklater‘s latest film Hit Man lands on Netflix this week after a brief stint in theaters that was paired with Glen Powell being disgustingly charming in various promotional interviews.

In Hit Man, Powell portrays Gary Johnson, a part-time police staffer who begins to work undercover to catch the real criminals. The film is very loosely based on Skip Hollandsworth’s 2001 Texas Monthly article of the same name in which the real life Gary Johnson worked undercover as a hitman in Houston.

While the story is inspired by Johnson, Linklater told Netflix that much of the plot is a fictional, exaggerated version of the story. The director said, “The real Gary did slight disguises, but not to the extent that we see in the film. I was like, ‘Should we really do a Russian accent?’ But Glen just pushed all of that to the max, and I love how it came out.”

When it comes to the real Gary, Linklater managed to meet with him a few times while writing the film. “He was just the most nonplussed guy,” Linklater told Vanity Fair. “We would talk about baseball or something, but he was a man of few words actually.” In 2022, when the film was nearing the end of production, Linklatter reached out to Johnson again, before learning that he had died.

Linklater also wants it to be known that unlike the Powell’s character, the real Gary did not actually kill anyone. Let’s keep his legacy clean.

Hit Man is now on Netflix.

BIA Shines Over The City In Her Pulsating ‘Lights Out’ Video With JID

BIA clearly has a pretty good rapport with the Dreamville Records team. Back in 2022, she and J. Cole teamed up on her song “London,” with both rappers coming out of the collab with complimentary comments about each other. Now, she’s linked up with Atlanta-bred Dreamville standout JID fo the pulsating, inspirational track “Lights Out.”

The overall vibe of the track is very 2007, with an anthemic beat/chorus structure that finds BIA extolling her perseverance. “When the light’s out / Still can see me shining, I’m a lighthouse,” she croons. Meanwhile, in her verse, she cites her prior collab with Jermaine, boasting, “First rap bitch you know that went back and forth with Cole.” On the second verse, JID comes in hot — as usual — opening with a callback to an ATL classic from T.I. and quickly launches into his signature tongue-twister flow.

The song appears on the Bad Boys: Ride Or Die soundtrack (one of two from BIA) alongside tracks from 21 Lil Harold, Becky G, Black Eyed Peas, Flo Milli, ScarLip, Sean Paul, and of course, Will Smith. The soundtrack is out now via Epic Records, and Bad Boys: Ride Or Die is out now in theaters.

The Most Anticipated Hip-Hop Tours Of Summer 2024

most_anticipated_hip-hop_tours_1024x450_
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Summer’s here, which means a whole slew of summer tours from your favorite artists. From Childish Gambino to That Mexican OT, there’s a tour for practically any hip-hop fan’s taste. There’s even a little old-school flavor, courtesy of Missy Elliott (sorry, guys, but it’s true — Missy’s old school now).

Here are the most anticipated hip-hop tours of summer 2024.

Childish Gambino — The New World Tour

Donald Glover’s most recent work as Childish Gambino hasn’t fallen under the umbrella of hip-hop in the strictest sense, but considering the bulk of his early work consisted of beats and rhymes, there’s a pretty strong chance that he’ll dip into those catalog hits. Not to mention, he has a string of featured artists he can call on such as Chance The Rapper and Young Nudy.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

French Montana — Gotta See It To Believe It Tour

Fresh off the release of his new mixtape, Mac & Cheese 5, the Bronx rapper has tapped fellow New Yorkers Fabolous and Fivio Foreign for his Gotta See It To Believe It Tour. Kicking off in August and running through the month, it’s a short tour that will stick mainly to the regions closest to his home base.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Future & Metro Boomin — We Trust You Tour

Their albums We Don’t Trust You and We Still Don’t Trust You may have turned the hip-hop world on its ears, but it seems they aren’t finished just yet. Although the tour is promoting their new albums, they have enough collaborations to make it worth the price of admission even without them.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Ken Carson — Chaos World Tour

Playboi Carti fans took a blow earlier this year with the cancelation of his Antagonist Tour. But fans of his label, Opium, still get the chance to catch at least one of the artists billed to open on that tour in Ken Carson’s Chaos World Tour. And hey, maybe Carti himself will put in an appearance.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Megan Thee Stallion — Hot Girl Summer Tour

Yes, I know. Megan’s tour has been in full swing for the past two weeks. But the bulk of the tour is set for the month of June… and hey, hey, look around. Dates coming up include her hometown show in Houston, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Turn up with Meg and her opener GloRilla before she heads to the UK and Europe in July.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Missy Elliott — Out Of This World Tour

My personal most-anticipated tour of the summer is Missy Elliott’s Out Of This World Tour with Busta Rhymes. The Rock And Roll Hall of Famer hasn’t played shows for a few years (which is an understatement), but she’s proven that she’s a consummate performer who doesn’t have a speck of rust on her.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Nicki Minaj — Pink Friday 2

Nicki Minaj just announced the second North American leg of the ongoing tour for her new album, which picks up in September — still technically summer — and runs well into the fall after she returns from Europe.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

Rob49 & Skilla Baby — Vultures Eat The Most Tour

Rob49 was on last year’s XXL Freshman cover, and Skilla Baby is more or less a shoo-in for this year’s list (if XXL doesn’t drop the ball in a truly epic way). That makes their joint tour this summer (which technically kicked off over the weekend) the best chance to see them early.

You can find dates and ticketing info here.

That Mexican OT — Live In Concert

June and July give breakout star That Mexican OT — and his openers Maxo Kream and Drodi — his second headlining tour since his breakout in 2023. With a new album, Texas Technician, he’ll have plenty of new material despite the relatively tight turnaround since his last spin around the block

You can find dates and ticketing info here.
