Tyler Adams Discusses The USMNT At Copa America And Why Soccer Is ‘In The Driver’s Seat For Social Change’

The United States men’s national team kicked off its Copa America slate earlier this week with a 2-0 win over Bolivia. A Christian Pulisic banger off of a corner kick in the opening minutes of the game put the U.S. ahead on their South American opponents, while Folarin Balogun doubled the lead just before halftime with a left footed strike that found the far corner.

Picking up three points in the opening game of a tournament is always gigantic — while there is no guarantee that the Americans make it to the knockout stage of Copa America because of this, having to chase points to make up a deficit in the second and third game of group play is never ideal. Just as gigantic: The game was the first start Tyler Adams has made for club or country since March. Adams, who captained the side at the World Cup in 2022, is coming off of an injury-plagued year professionally. Despite receiving a move from Leeds United to Bournemouth last summer, Adams was only able to appear in three Premier League games (one of which came as a member of the starting XI) for the Cherries due to two hamstring surgeries and back spasms.

The engine at the base of the American midfield, Adams tells Uproxx Sports he’s feeling good after starting, playing the first 45 minutes, and getting subbed off at halftime. He didn’t look particularly rusty against Bolivia, either, as he buzzed around in the midfield, kept the ball moving, and got himself involved in duels and defensive actions. It remains to be seen how large of a role he will play in the team’s remaining group fixtures against Panama on Thursday evening and Uruguay on Monday night.

This summer is the unofficial start of a gigantic, two-year stretch for soccer in the United States. Copa America is taking place on American soil this year. The men’s and women’s teams will be represented at the Olympics in Paris, while the United States will co-host the men’s World Cup in 2026 alongside Canada and Mexico. Amid all of that, Adams says it would be “pretty foolish” of the USMNT to do anything but focus on what’s happening right now, and put forth good performances in a tournament that is taking place under some rather unique circumstances.

“It’s great that we’re hosting Copa America, but it’s a CONMEBOL tournament in America, it’s not a CONCACAF tournament, it’s not a U.S. tournament,” Adams tells Uproxx Sports over Zoom. “Some of these games, when we play some of the bigger South American teams, they’re gonna have 90 percent of the stadium full. So, it’s obviously always interesting to play in home soil and not feel like a home game. But that can be a glimpse of what the World Cup will be like, we don’t know. So, I think it’s great to have this little pre-run, but I think we’re more focused on our performances in this and how we can develop, rather than necessarily just the results or not.”

Ahead of the USMNT’s second game in group play against Panama, we caught up with Adams to discuss his partnership with Allstate, the ability soccer has to bring people together, the game against Bolivia, finding his voice as a leader, his thoughts on Thursday night’s game against a familiar foe, and more.

What do you have going on with Allstate?

We started an amazing partnership this summer, and our first addition to that partnership was opening up a mini pitch in Detroit. For me, and just where I’m at in my career, starting these partnerships that are a little bit more about how can we grow the game and help communities rather than the lucrative aspect is always super important to me. So, we obviously worked hard, not only with each other, between myself and Allstate and my team, but also with Black Star, who finds these underserved communities in cities that need resources and access to things, especially through soccer. So, the mini pitch that we opened in Detroit was going to be the first of three, we’re going to do another one next year and one the following year in 2026 in the lead-up to the World Cup. And, yeah, I’m really excited about the partnership.

What was interesting to you about getting on board with this? Because I’ve always thought more mini pitches all over the place just makes a ton of sense, so I was very glad to see that this is happening.

Allstate

I actually worked with the U.S. Soccer Foundation previously, it was super important to me to open up a couple of mini pitches in my hometown, because it’s exactly like you said, just these things popping up everywhere is gonna give people the idea of playing soccer, which just isn’t the norm in the U.S. I obviously have played in Europe now for six years, and anywhere you go, there’s soccer fields, real soccer fields, and I don’t think we have the luxury of putting real soccer fields everywhere. I think mini pitches are a great start, because they’re easy to install, they’re durable, they can get beat up, doesn’t really matter. But, this gives young players the technique and technical ability they need. But also, it’s just another game that keeps kids actives, and off the streets from doing something else. So, through the U.S. Soccer Foundation, obviously, we put them in and I’ve done it before. And when I talked with Allstate about it, they loved the idea.

I’m interested in soccer as a way to spark widespread social change. Tons and men’s and women’s players are vocal about using the game as a tool for good, we’ve literally had wars paused in the past because of soccer. What is it about this sport specifically that you think has such a unifying and optimistic nature about it?

The bottom line is, it’s the only global sport in the world, it’s the only sport that is played in every single country, no matter where you go. Basketball isn’t played in every every country, baseball is not played in every country. Soccer is literally the only sport that’s played in every single country in the world. And I think that this unites people in a common way — people love to be entertained and go to games, the culture of supporting a team and having something to stand behind. Based off of your religious beliefs, you support certain teams — in Scotland, between Celtic and Rangers. There’s always something to support within soccer. And I think that you see the most diverse ethnicities in soccer, nationalities, you can be of any color, any race, any age, and have an opportunity to play soccer. And I think that’s why it’s so attractive to so many people. And when you just look around the world, and how many places it’s united people, it’s in the driver’s seat for social change, in general.

The phrase “change the way the world views American soccer” has followed you guys around for years at this point. Is this sort of off-field stuff part of it? Or have you always viewed that more as a purely a matter of how we play the game?

I think it started as a way that when we get out on the pitch, what are we trying to achieve? What are we trying to do? What’s the bigger picture? And I think that within the cycle, which has been almost five years now, everyone’s worked towards this common goal of how can we kind of just live by this? When I look at my personal life and what I’ve tried to do, or Christian Pulisic’s personal life and what he tries to do, giving access to all these kids, and being role models for a lot of these kids, is going to help drive that, as well — not just through our play, our play is obviously going to have a huge effect, because people are going to be attracted to the style of play and us winning games and results and all these things. But in general, being good people and doing the right thing and being good role models off the field is hugely important.

I think that’s a good lead into where you’re at right now. And now that you’ve had a few days to chew over and get past the Bolivia game, what’s the vibe like among the guys after getting the three points? Has it been a little more joyous knowing that first one is taken care of? Has it been more businesslike? Or has there not really been a big change among the group?

When we entered tournament phase — so, after playing that game against Brazil, we had a couple days off. And when we came back into camp, and then we we started up in Dallas, the mentality of the group completely changed. It was tournament time. You get that feeling that, not that there’s more pressure on the line. But just we have something a lot more to play for. Friendlies are great, but a friendly is a friendly, these games aren’t friendlies anymore, and it was great to get the three points and start though the tournament opening like that. But the bottom line is, we look at it in a business matter. We checked off game one, we’re headed into game two, and we can’t look past game two yet. So yeah, it’ll be a great opportunity to get another three points tomorrow. But again, it’s gonna take everyone’s focus, the depth of the team, everyone’s playing a certain role at some point within this team. And yeah, we’re looking forward to it.

It was your first extended run since I believe March 30. What were your thoughts on how you played, how you’re feeling today, and just generally, this process of getting back to the point where you are able to get out there and start for club or country?

I feel good, I’m in a good spot, I’m comfortable. In the game, I was obviously comfortable, played well. The connection between myself and other midfielders, the chemistry that we have, is unlike any other team I’ve played. So, I’m always comfortable in that team. And yeah, it’s about building durability, robustness again, which takes time. Being out as long as I was out previously, previous to March, it just takes time. And I’m patient with that, gotta be patient with myself. But quality doesn’t go away, so I was comfortable in that game.

You hear all the time about athletes suffering an injury and having the game taken away from them, and it’s always surprising to me just how much harder that part sounds than the physical rehabilitation. And I guess I’d like to know how do you remain positive in the face of all of that?

For me, it wasn’t really a big deal. Of course, I want to be playing every game, I missed the game and my teammates and supporting them and whatnot. But that time period that I went through, being injured all the time, and just trying to get the body right and the mind right. I had my son, as well, and to be honest with you, it was the best thing that obviously ever happened to me in general, but it couldn’t have even been better timing for that. I don’t think, at one point, that I missed the game during that time period, just because I was spending every single moment with my son. So, not many athletes get to spend the first five months, every single day, with their kid. And those are moments that I’ll never be able to get back. So I’m very grateful that I got got to spend all those moments with him. And yeah, he kept me focused on the bigger picture, which is life, and now I’m able to do what I do again, and I’m enjoying it. So it’s good.

Something that interests me about this U.S. group is how long you’ve all been together, whether that’s with the senior team or with the youth national teams. And when you think back on all the moments you guys have shared together, is there one specific one that you’re most proud of? Or brings you the most joy when you think back on it?

There’s so many moments that we’ve gone through together. I mean, I’ve known some of these guys for 10-plus years now at this point, and I think it’s special that we get to continue to represent our country together. But I would want to say it’s probably after we didn’t qualify for the 2018 World Cup, that first camp after we didn’t qualify, so many of us young guys got called up to that camp. And I remember getting called up to that camp, and everyone was so dependent on the first performance after that camp. How were all these young guys going to look? Are they ready for it? Are they good enough? What’s the future gonna look like?

And I think we all stepped into a role not really knowing what to expect — grateful for the opportunity, of course, but not really understanding the roles that we might play in today’s U.S. Soccer organization. And I think that we can all say that we did a pretty good job, and there’s a bright future ahead for all of us. But we want to continue to represent the country in a good way. But that first game after not qualifying for the for the World Cup, playing in Portugal against Portugal, an amazing team, obviously that was gonna go on to do big things in that World Cup. It was special stepping on the field with a bunch of young guys, getting a decent result, but I think everyone saw that there was potential in our group.

I’ve been watching the national team forever, and from basically the moment you broke into the team, I’ve always been struck by how you’re always talking, you’re always directing traffic, you’re always keeping tabs on everything that’s happening on the pitch. Was there a moment where you felt like you found your voice as a leader with the national team? Or do you feel like this has just always been the default mode for Tyler Adams?

I would say, yeah, it’s always kind of been default mode for me. I think it’s more, I talk to a lot of people, obviously, because I want the best for them and I want the best for our team. But as a competitor, I know that if I’m organizing, if I’m helping people, not only am I keeping myself focused in the game and what I need to be doing to make sure I’m doing everything right, but I know that by helping players and organizing and putting them in the right positions, it’s going to give our team the best chance to win. So, I always absorb information on the pitch, and being in the center of the field, obviously, you see things in a 360 view. So, I think just from a young age, just being a younger player that was always playing up and being around good leaders, I’ve always absorbed that information and how they led, but I continue to do that. I’m just a competitor at heart. I want to win no matter what. And if I can help that by talking and getting on guys and sometimes being the bad guy, I have no problem doing it.

My last question is about your next game in Copa America. Bolivia and Uruguay aren’t teams you guys play all that often. But Panama is a CONCACAF team. Do you guys anticipate that level of familiarity will make anything around this game different from those two? Whether it’s more physical, whether it’s more tense, or whether it’s easier to maybe settle in and play your game, knowing the opponent the way you guys do?

I actually think if anything, it’s going to be be a negative, I think it’s gonna be even harder. I think that having played against a team so often, you might predict what they’re going to do, and then they might do the opposite. When you predict playing against Uruguay, you have kind of an idea from watching games, like, this is the way they’re going to play, this is their identity. I think Panama is very flexible in the way that they play — they can play with five in the back, they can play with four in the back, they can play man to man. But we’ve had some really tough games against them. They’re an athletic team, they’re a direct team. And I think that the intensity in this game is going to be even a notch higher than our first game. So, I think mentally, we need to be prepared to come in with it, with the intensity and the level and the energy. But yeah, at the end, we need to let our quality show, but it’s not going to be able to show without bringing the intensity to this game.

How easy is it to not get caught up in a game that’s a little bit more intense, and just keep that win and we’re through mindset for the entire 90 minutes?

I don’t think our mindset is to say win and through. It’s going to be based off performances, we need solid performances from every single player on the field to get the result. That’s the bottom line. And when we when we start to think about, let’s get a win and the result, and you start to chase that result, we lack performances. And we’ve seen that in the past — we take that example from Colombia, and a learning curve, where I think we were too focused on, like, let’s get a win and set an example of what we need to do in Copa America. No, we need to focus on each individual performance. Because when we do that, we perform well as a team. And we know we’re gonna be able to compete with anyone, and that that was the example against Brazil. So, we want to stay on that trend, continue to work on that, continue to improve some things from the first game, which I think we still could have done a lot of things better, and then go from there.

Teresa Weatherspoon Is Instilling A Winning Culture With The Chicago Sky

teresa weatherspoon sky fever june 2024
Christina Jones

CHICAGO — After being named the Chicago Sky head coach last October, Teresa “Spoon” Weatherspoon took in her new home on an architectural boat tour. She looked up at buildings built decades apart, co-existing and not in competition with one another, and saw her blueprint for the culture she wanted to instill within the Sky.

“There’s a rich history here — rich, rich history and sports history,” Weatherspoon told Dime before the Sky’s triumphant 88-87 comeback victory over the Indiana Fever at Chicago’s Wintrust Arena last Sunday, June 23. “We don’t want to compete against it; we want to complement it. There’s a lot that we want to be a part of. The Chicago Sky want to complement the sports history, and how do we do that? Between the four lines, compete, play hard, go out and win every single day to represent this organization and this city in the right way.”

Chicago has warmed quickly to this year’s Sky (6-9). Weatherspoon, a Hall of Famer and six-time All-Star WNBA icon, received a standing ovation when taking the floor for the first time as the head coach on May 7, a preseason game against New York, but she is far from the only new face. After a February trade sent Kahleah Copper to Phoenix, Diamond DeShields and Dana Evans are the only players remaining from the 2021 team that won the franchise’s first WNBA championship. The foundation of the Sky’s rebuild was solidified by drafting center Kamilla Cardoso (No. 3) and forward Angel Reese (No. 7) — affectionately known as the “Skyscrapers” — in April, which immediately sparked an uptick in merchandise and ticket sales.

“They’re here,” Weatherspoon said about what would become the team’s third sold-out game this season that drew 2.3 million viewers on ESPN, the most-watched WNBA game in 23 years.

Christina Jones

The palpable electricity coursing through Wintrust Arena couldn’t possibly be translated through a screen, however.

“I know I have a lot of little girls look up to me,” Reese said by the Sky’s bench during pre-game warmups. “All of these people here are coming to see all of us, so knowing that my voice and my impact is leading and continuing to use my platform is what’s important.”

One fan named Shakira Miller traveled from Louisiana to see Reese. She wore a custom graphic tee with three versions of Reese in a Sky jersey printed on the front. Miller grew up hooping and dreaming of playing at LSU, so she lives vicariously through Reese. Now, she teaches P.E. and sees Reese’s impact in her school gym every day, with her students wearing one leg sleeve like Reese (who took inspiration for the look from the back-to-back WNBA MVP, A’ja Wilson). “She’s making a difference wherever she goes,” Miller said.

Another fan named Andre hung a No. 5 jersey over the rails, as he’s done before every Sky home game, hoping for Reese’s signature and mere seconds of her time. “She’s just been a really big influence for the city of Chicago since being drafted,” he said. “Her charisma and personality makes the total package that you want in a player, and I think it’s a perfect fit to help us rebuild and get back to where we were in 2021.”

Sunday’s battle with Indiana — Reese competing against Fever rookie and No. 1 overall pick Caitlin Clark, and all that their proximity to each other entails — evoked a playoff atmosphere. Beloved Chicagoans Chance The Rapper and Lil Durk sat courtside, as was Chicago Bears president Kevin Warren, and the Sky demanded their attention.

Christina Jones

Reese played her most efficient and well-rounded game as a pro with a career-high 25 points and 16 rebounds for her eighth consecutive double-double (a WNBA rookie record). Cardoso posted a career-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. DeShields played ferocious defense, especially evident on an emphatic block on a Clark layup. Chennedy Carter opened the scoring for Chicago and was a consistent bucket on 8-of-12 shooting. Lindsay Allen was the glue, leading the team in assists. Marina Mabrey, the Sky’s leading scorer this season, struggled (2-of-14 from the floor, including 1-of-10 from three), missing two free throws that would have put the game away with 18 seconds left, but her calming leadership never waned.

“For me, the biggest thing I would say is just that, with all the controversy surrounding Chennedy Carter [after her Flagrant 1 foul on Clark on June 1] and Angel and their ‘attitudes’ or their ‘issues,’ you can see in the games how supportive they are of each other,” native Chicagoan Sarah Spain, an Emmy-winning journalist and host of Good Game With Sarah Spain, wrote to Dime. “[Coach Spoon] has been able to keep the team super tight and super connected to each other.”

Christina Jones

The Sky’s togetherness was apparent throughout their riveting 15-point comeback, clawing back and learning from their mistakes in real time. Before the game, Reese told The Chicago Tribune‘s Julia Poe that Carter is “the Chenn to the Barbie,” referencing her former Bayou Barbie nickname, and they danced to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” after sealing the win. After the game, Weatherspoon assured the press that Mabrey would be harder on herself than anyone for her missed free throws and lauded Mabrey as a “warrior.” Sure enough, Mabrey posted a self-deprecating TikTok showing her practicing free throws. An animated Weatherspoon cared so much that she screamed affirmations to her players during her in-game ESPN interview, which they’ve internalized. “We aren’t supposed to be perfect right now,” Reese said postgame.

The most promising piece is how unequivocally comfortable they are to be imperfectly themselves.

“Spoon encouraging people to be exactly who they are and go out there and have that confidence, that’s what she brings to the table,” said Mabrey, who arrived in Chicago via trade in February 2023. “She challenges me to be a leader, scorer, and creator at the same time — being that game-changer for us. I’m starting to take that on and believe in it. I learned from the people ahead of me, and now, I’m trying to figure it out along the way. I’m not doing everything perfectly, but I have Spoon constantly in my ear and encouraging me, like, ‘You got it.’”

Forward Brianna Turner, a two-time WNBA All-Defensive First Team selection, is in her first season with the Sky and feels a difference from her previous five years in the league.

“Even the fan base, Chicago just has such a high percentage of Black people, which wasn’t case with previous teams I’ve been on from a community aspect,” she said. “We can reach more fans, more people — young, old, gay, straight — there’s somebody [on our team] for everybody. [Coach Spoon] has really implemented a championship culture. Obviously, we’re still building our team and growing each game, but she demands excellence, and that’s the standard.”

Christina Jones

Reese’s excellence earned a hug postgame from Sheryl Swoopes, the first-ever signed player in WNBA history who became a four-time champion, three-time MVP, and Hall of Famer. Reese declined to go into specifics about what was said during their embrace, but while explaining what it means to have a legend like Swoopes believe in her, she made sure to note she’s “already being coached by a legend.” Reese and Weatherspoon both won NCAA championships in Louisiana, after all; Reese at LSU in 2023 and Weatherspoon at Louisiana Tech in 1988. Reese and her teammates follow Weatherspoon’s lead because her words are backed by decades of lived experience.

“When you experience something in life, and as much as I’ve experienced in the game of basketball, the beautiful part of it for me is to give back,” Weatherspoon said in response to a question from Maya Goldberg-Safir. “You don’t experience things to keep; you experience it to give it back. It’s emotional for me, sometimes, when I think about it because a group of young women are under my leadership, and it’s my duty — and I love my duty, and I love my challenge — is to make sure that they are the best version of themselves. […] It’s not all about the Xs and Os for me. It’s about the relationship with them.”

Christina Jones

So, the Sky snagged their first win against what promises to be their long-running rival in front of a reinvigorated fan base on Sunday. But Coach Spoon didn’t take this job to win one game in June. On Thursday night, June 27, the Sky will host the back-to-back defending champion Las Vegas Aces for the first time this year — serving as a long-term measuring stick.

“We’re still growing,” Weatherspoon said. “We’re still learning each other. We’ve had to do it at a really fast pace being so young and new — and new to each other. But we’re doing it. We’re embracing it. We’re embracing what’s necessary for it to be done. There’s a lot that goes into what’s necessary for it to be done, so we’re embracing it every single day.”

Under Coach Spoon, the Sky have already collected tangible proof that the hard way is the only way forward because it’s the most rewarding way, and if they have it their way, they will earn a lasting place in Chicago history.

Sexyy Red Teased The Long-Awaited Release Of Her ‘F My Baby Dad’ Video With A Hilarious ‘Maury’-Inspired Trailer

Sexyy Red’s run of ratchet excellence continues with a Maury-inspired teaser for the long-awaited video for her fan-favorite single “Bow Bow Bow” — better known as “F My Baby Dad.” For those of you too young to have caught the lowbrow classic daytime talk show while staying home sick from school, host Maury Povich would often have guests on the show with paternity disputes that the show would then “resolve” (with a disclaimer protecting the show from any liability for false positives) with Povich’s signature catchphrase “you are/are not the baby’s father.”

The whole thing was equal parts hilariously entertaining and depressingly gross, making a spectacle of desperate, low-income people for their lack of “class” and decorum — basically a precursor for today’s more slickly presented modern reality TV. What can I say, it was the ’90s.

With that being said, Sexyy Red knows her audience and owns the characterization with tongue firmly in cheek, presenting the song’s guest feature Chief Keef (with whom she’s been rumored to be having a fling) as the dirtbag potential baby daddy. She even jokes that “I’m pregnant rn” in a tweet sharing the teaser, which … seems unlikely, but isn’t out of the realm of possibility, considering she just had her second child and isn’t shy about her (ahem) proclivities.

You can watch the “Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Dad)” video teaser below.

‘The Boys’ Recap: Everything’s Coming Full Circle For Hughie Campbell In Season 4 Episode 5

The Boys
Prime Video/Amazon

The Boys spoilers will obviously be found below.

The Boys began with Hughie’s trauma — A-Train zooming right through Hughie’s girlfriend, Robin, while he kissed her on the street, soon to realize that he was holding her hands in front of her liquified bod — and it never really let up from there. And if you’re reading this, then you damn well know that Hughie is the character who is still always most likely to end up like this:

Hughie Whale The Boys
Amazin

That poor whale. Of course, that moment happened in the second season, and the world has moved onto the fourth season. Last week, the show went all in on Homelander’s not-so-sweet homecoming, and now, things are starting to come full circle for Hughie on a hard-hitting emotional note. I warned y’all at review time that things get rough for him this season. The show hasn’t had their last word on that issue (and my goodness, Jack Quaid is down for the challenge), but few things could hit harder for Hughie than this sight:

Prime Video/Amazon

Yup, that’s Hughie Sr. with Simon Pegg doing the acrobatic honors. This ^^^ horror took place after Hughie toyed with the idea of injecting his dad with Compound V. He pulled that punch, but Hughie’s mom seized that chance, and “Supe” Dad was born. This did not go well. Not only could Hughie Sr. not control his new powers, but those abilities strongly resembled those of A-Train, which is an all-too-direct reference to the speedy and brutal killing of Robin. And ironically, A-Train had actually (and finally) started to make amends with Hughie by snagging the drug, but dammit, Hughie cannot win.

As a result, Hughie Sr. commits various forms of homicide (mainly manslaughter but at least one straight-up murder by ripping out a vital organ of a security guard) while going berserk and being unable to figure out what the hell is happening after being jolted out of death and teleporting into chaos. The decision was then made, after Hughie calms him down, that dad should receive a lethal injection. That led to a rare, bittersweetly beautiful moment on The Boys, where tenderness ruled but only for a few moments:

Prime Video/Amazon
Prime Video/Amazon

This is perhaps the most straight-up honest exchange that we’ve ever seen on The Boys and a nice way to bring the show back down to earth, to remind the world that real human concerns exist behind this show’s super-inappropriate moments and Homelander fancying a creamy milkshake. Of course, the episode kept the other characters’ mayhem flying at warp speed, leading Hughie’s plight to feel even more dizzying.

The end result of this contrast: The Boys is actually, as much attention as it receives for its stunt gore and profanity, a series that can pull off hitting you in the face with humanity amid the monstrousness of what Vought has wrought. I suspect that viewers will be thinking about this exchange between Hughie and his dad long after the blood and guts settle.

Some loose thoughts about the rest of the episode:

Gen V‘s Cate and Sam are fully Guardians of Godolkin now in their own Vought-produced movie, Flipped. Cate seems to relish and embrace this development, and Sam appears to be simply going along with whatever won’t send him back to the Woods. This sure will make Gen V‘s second season awkward as hell, but there’s no telling whether Marie, Emma/Cricket, and Jordan will even be allowed to mingle with the university’s general population when the show returns.

– Homelander seems proud of Ryan for wanting to use his powers for good, but we will see how long that lasts.

– Ashley’s dynamic with her former bedroom underling tells quite a tale, if you think about how Homelander previously humiliated her with that wig stunt and how she reacted to Homelander faux-demanding that Deep “service” A-Train. She seems to be working out some resentment against Homie with the domme role for sure. Additionally, her interactions with A-Train show that he has not forgotten that she’s a toilet bandit.

– A-Train being the “leak” is both surprising and gratifying to see, considering how the series opened with him doing a horrific deed, for which he’s finally making some amends.

– Firecracker Lord’s Soldier movie shows her strolling into church in Daisy-Duke shorts. The character is largely based upon a certain congresswoman, but it sure seems like there’s some rootin’ tootin’ mixed in there, too.

– How about those Supe chickens and sheep? “Kentucky Fried F*cking Massacre” might be one of the better quips this season thus far. These scenes also delivered the “fun” type of mayhem to counterbalance the devastating variety that was uncontrollably carried out by Hughie’s dad. Because ultimately, this show’s audience doesn’t tune in for a fully serious ride. Also admittedly, I wasn’t initially thrilled with the idea of a Supe virus, considering what the real world went through, but The Boys (and Gen V) has managed to satirize the subject enough to make it entertaining, not depressing.

Prime Video/Amazon’s ‘The Boys’ streams new episodes on Thursdays.

Stephen A Smith Called Out The Pelicans Lack Of ‘Rough Riders’ To CJ McCollum While Discussing The Knicks

sas-cj-top
ESPN

Stephen A. Smith is riding an incredible high this week after the New York Knicks landed Mikal Bridges in a stunning trade with the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday night, following that up by agreeing to a $212.5 million contract to keep OG Anunoby as well.

There are still some decisions to be made to round out the roster, most notably whether they can keep Isaiah Hartenstein in town, but the Knicks certainly look the part of a top contender in the East. The question that will be debated for months is exactly how good New York is and where they fall in the NBA’s hierarchy. What happens over the next few weeks with free agency and trades will go a long way in determining that, but right now there are plenty of folks who see them as the No. 2 team in the East behind the champion Boston Celtics.

Stephen A. is, unsurprisingly, one of them, boasting that they’re a top-5 team in the NBA on First Take with CJ McCollum and Kendrick Perkins. McCollum wasn’t quite so sure of that fact, which led Smith to prod at the Pelicans point guard by stating that if New Orleans had more “rough riders” like the Knicks, they could be in that conversation too.

It’s pretty clear who, exactly, Stephen A. is talking about, as Zion Williamson has been a frequent target of criticism for not being able to stay on the floor. McCollum does his best to laugh it off (and Kendrick Perkins was genuinely delighted by it), but, similarly to Paul George when Smith made a crack about Kawhi Leonard to him, he was probably not thrilled with Smith going down that road.

David Fincher’s ‘Squid Game’: Everything We Know About A Possible American Remake Of Netflix’s Biggest Show Ever

squid game
netflix

David Fincher has been attached to enough titles that either someone else ended up making or they got stuck in development hell and still haven’t seen the light of day that there’s an entire Wikipedia page for the director’s “unrealized projects.” He was going to direct The Avengers (this one, not that one), for instance, until Jeremiah S. Chechik took over. He’s also been varying degrees of attached to Blade, Catch Me If You Can, Spider-Man, and Mission: Impossible III, all of which were handed to another filmmaker. The alternate-timeline of where his career could have gone extends to television, including the brilliant limited series The Terror and the pilot episode of Deadwood.

Will an American remake of Netflix‘s Squid Game — yes, that Squid Game, as if there’s another — be next? Or will it join his realized projects?

Here’s everything we know about David Fincher’s Squid Game.

Plot

Last year, Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider reported that Netflix was “courting” Fincher to produce and direct an American remake of Squid Game, the streamer’s most popular series ever. “No idea whether he’s engaging, but they want him to tackle this project BADLY,” he added. Fincher has been with Netflix for over 10 years, ever since he helped develop House of Cards (Netflix’s first original series), and he recently renewed his contract until 2027. Could Squid Game fill the Mindhunter-sized hole in people’s heart?

No, because the only substitution for Mindhunter is more Mindhunter (it ain’t happening). Besides, it sounds like Fincher is focused on Squid Game, ahead of even his a Chinatown prequel series. According to The Playlist, “Fincher has been quietly working on Squid Game for the last two years or so and even has a writer working on it: British writer Dennis Kelly.”

Kelly is the creator of British series Utopia, which was supposed to get an American remake on HBO with Fincher attached as co-creator. But discussions fell apart over money (Utopia eventually ended up on Prime Video, with Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn as the lead creative voice, but it was unceremoniously canceled after one season in 2020). “I thought we had really, really good scripts and a great cast and we were getting ready to do that and you know it came down to $9 million,” Fincher explained on the Empire podcast. Could the same thing with the Squid Game remake and Netflix?

Well, first, Netflix needs to acknolwedge it’s happening. As recently as February, Netflix honcho Ted Sarandos denied the rumors. “Since the main series is still ongoing, there’s no justified reason for Netflix to do a remake,” he said. But, as reported by The Playlist, “Last we heard, Fincher was still ‘working on’ [Squid Game], but presumably, given the hard pivot away from an already completed Chinatown, it’s intended to be his next directing gig.”

I guess we’ll see!

Cast

Maybe Fincher regular Brad Pitt can play the big doll? Just spitballin’ here.

Release Date

Fincher’s Squid Game doesn’t have a release date, but the original Squid Game, the one that made Netflix a lot of money (but not the creator), will be back for season 2 later this year.

Trailer

There’s no trailer, obviously, so instead I decided to pick a scene from my favorite David Fincher movie. But then I spent 10 minutes trying to decide what is my favorite David Fincher movie (Gone Girl? The Social Network? The Killer?) before landing on Zodiac. So, here’s the best — or at least the most tense — scene from David Fincher’s best movie. I’m sure no one will disagree.
