2024 NBA Draft Grades: Oklahoma City Thunder Get An ‘A-‘ With A Long-Term Buy On Nikola Topic At 12

Team Needs: Center depth, Rebounding, Talent Consolidation

The Oklahoma City Thunder took a huge leap in the 2023-24 season, earning the 1-seed in the West and making it to the conference semifinals, where they stumbled against the Dallas Mavericks. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander became an MVP candidate, Jalen Williams emerged as one of the league’s best young two-way wings, and Chet Holmgren impressed in his redshirt rookie season.

Now the challenge for the Thunder is going from a really good team to a great team and building a roster that’s playoff ready around that trio. They took an early step in the right direction by flipping Josh Giddey, who struggled in the playoffs, for Alex Caruso, but there are still things to improve upon. The question for OKC is how they go about filling those holes, as they have cap space, a ton of future picks, and some young players that other teams will be interested in that they might be looking to consolidate into more immediate help.

With the 12th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Thunder had a chance to add some more young talent to their roster, or make a more aggressive move in a trade to bring in some veteran help. With the top big men already off the board and no trades materializing, the Thunder opted to make a long-term play at No. 12 by taking Nikola Topic.

Nikola Topic (No. 12 Overall), A-: Nothing could be more Thunder than this. Topic is coming back from a significant knee injury, and he may not be available for much of the 2024-25 season. However, Topic received real top-five buzz earlier in the cycle, and he is a big guard with the ability to play on the ball and pass. His fit with OKC’s current roster might be a bit clunky, but Sam Presti simply takes his guys. Topic may have been the best talent available.

2024 NBA Draft Grades: Chicago Bulls Get A ‘B+’ Taking A Swing On Matas Buzelis At No. 11

Team Needs: Shooting, Center, Perimeter Defense

The Chicago Bulls made the first big trade of the 2024 offseason, flipping Alex Caruso for Josh Giddey straight up in a trade that was curious to many (and infuriating to plenty in Chicago). The big question for the Bulls is whether that’s an indicator they are about to shift their priorities to building for the future, or if they really think Giddey gives them the playmaking that was missing to help push their way into the playoff conversation in the East.

With the 11th overall pick in Wednesday’s first round, the Bulls could give a bit of an indication of their plans, but we really won’t know what Chicago’s short- and long-term vision is until DeMar DeRozan agrees to a deal, either back with the Bulls or elsewhere. Either way, the Bulls have to address a handful of roster holes this summer, from a continued need to add shooting, seeking out a long-term answer at center with Nikola Vucevic nearing the end of his deal, and now needing to bolster their perimeter defense after trading away Caruso.

However, as the draft board sorted itself out, the Bulls couldn’t help but take an opportunity on a high upside guy in Matas Buzelis.

Matas Buzelis (No. 11 Overall), B+: This could be said for many prospects in this draft, but can Buzelis shoot? That’s the biggest question. He shot it well in high school but had a rough year in the G League. He also needs to get stronger (and bigger in general), but Buzelis is very athletic and has the length and fluidity you’re looking for in a modern forward.

2024 NBA Draft Grades: Utah Jazz Get A ‘B’ For Nabbing Cody Williams At No. 10

Team Needs: Point Guard, Small Forward, Shooting, Center Depth

The Utah Jazz are a fascinating team this offseason, because after a couple years of continuing to play respectable ball just outside the Play-In out West, they have a ton of flexibility with how to approach this summer.

With $60 million in cap space and a ton of picks, they could be big players on the trade or free agency market if they want to, but they could just as easily use that space to take on a bad contract or two and truly embrace the tank with a much more intriguing Draft class in 2025 at the top. Their first decision will be what to do with Lauri Markkanen, who has emerged as an All-Star caliber player in Utah but is going into the final year of his contract, earning $18 million in 2024-25. Plenty of teams are interested in Markkanen’s ability to space the floor as a 4-man, but the Jazz have never really indicated an interest in going for a full youth movement and bottoming out.

If they are not going to enter the Fail For Flagg sweepstakes, there are some serious needs on this roster to address in the Draft and free agency to start closing the gap on the teams in front of them. Point guard remains a bit of a shaky spot, and while they may like Keyonte George, they could use a veteran upgrade at that position. They need more shooting on the wing, as well as center depth behind Walker Kessler. They have a lot of money and roster spots to make that happen, and there are a number of directions they could go this summer.

With the 10th pick, they opted for Cody Williams out of Colorado to fill out a hole on the wing, and hopefully follow a similar development trajectory to his brother.

Cody Williams (No. 10 Overall), B: He is probably best known as the brother of OKC’s Jalen Williams, but Cody is a lottery-level prospect on his own. He is exceptionally thin and battled injuries during his freshman year at Colorado, but Williams has real two-way appeal long-term. He projects to shoot and, if he can add strength, he should be able to hold up on defense.

2024 NBA Draft Grades: Memphis Grizzlies Get A ‘C’ Landing Zach Edey At No. 9

zach edey

Team Needs: Center, Shooting, Wing Depth

The Memphis Grizzlies are the rare team where you almost have to completely disregard everything that happened last year. They were injured to a ridiculous degree, ultimately playing 33(!) players due to various injuries and absences throughout the season.

The hope is that key players like Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, Marcus Smart, and Brandon Clarke will all be back healthy, joining forces with Jaren Jackson Jr. once again to try and return to the top of the West standings. However, to get there, they do seem to need to make some additions, as they traded away Steven Adams last season (as he was also injured) and have a pretty big hole to fill at the center position. Shooting, as has been the case for more than a decade, also remains something the Grizzlies could use more of after finishing 29th in three-point percentage a year ago.

Zach Edey (No. 9 Overall), C: This is high for Edey, but it’s also understandable. Make no mistake, Edey was a generational college player and he is more than just big. But he is truly enormous. His rebounding, screen setting, hands, and finishing near the rim are tremendous. The big question is how he’ll translate to the NBA, particularly when asked to defend in space against NBA athletes. Memphis also tends to play fast, which Edey may not be suited for, but the Grizzlies clearly wanted a center and they got one.

The Timberwolves Made A Stunning Trade To Get Rob Dillingham At No. 8 From The Spurs

The Minnesota Timberwolves weren’t supposed to be on the clock til much later in the night during Wednesday’s first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, but word broke as the Spurs took Rob Dillingham with the No. 8 pick that the Kentucky guard was actually being redirected to the West’s runners up for first round picks in 2030 and 2031.

The Spurs use the trade to stock up on more future picks, while the Timberwolves addressed a serious need at the guard spot, jumping up to take one of the most explosive scorers in this year’s Draft. Minnesota, given their cap situation, needed to find ways to add talent that would be cost controlled, and knowing free agents wouldn’t really be an option beyond vet minimums, they saw an opportunity to jump up and fill a need with Dillingham.

Rob Dillingham (No. 8 Overall), B+: Dillingham is far from a “safe” bet given his stature. He’s tiny. Everyone knows this. However, he does have legitimate on-ball upside in a draft that doesn’t have much of that. In Minnesota, they can also take it slowly with him on a team that features Mike Conley, and Dillingham does pair snugly with Rudy Gobert behind him on defense, where the young guard projects to struggle.

2024 NBA Draft Grades: Portland Trail Blazers Get An ‘A’ Landing Donovan Clingan At No. 7

Team Needs: Shooting, Wing depth, Roster clarity, Health, Talent Upgrades

The Portland Trail Blazers began their rebuild in earnest last year after trading away Damian Lillard, and as expected it was a tough season for the young Blazers. They were plagued by injury issues, with Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpe, Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and Jerami Grant all missing extended time. Scoot Henderson (who missed 20 games himself, which was the fewest of that entire group) took his lumps as a young guard learning to play the NBA game, and certainly wasn’t helped by the inconsistency with who was in the lineups around him.

That makes this offseason a bit tricky for the Blazers to figure out exactly how to proceed. They can’t feel extremely confident about who is definitively part of their foundation for the future after an incomplete year for so many key players. Still, there are clear needs for this team, most notably adding shooters, as they were last in the NBA in three-point percentage a year ago. They started their effort to bolster their roster early on Draft night, trading the 14th pick and some 2029 selections for Deni Avdija from the Wizards, and then arrived at the No. 7 pick with Donovan Clingan still available and scooped him up.

Donovan Clingan (No. 7 Overall), A: For me, Clingan has the highest floor in this class, and his rim protection is the best single trait in the class. That is a strong foundation, especially with Portland able to stay put at No. 7 and take him without any additional investment. It does create a bit of a challenge with Deandre Ayton but, from a draft perspective, Clingan was my highest-rated player available and he can help to transform Portland’s defense.

Europeans asked Americans about life in the US and here’s what they said

Over on Reddit, Europeans asked Americans different questions about American life, covering every topic from tipping culture to favorite landmarks to football fascination (not to be confused with soccer, of course).

It’s clear from the candid conversation that there are both many wonderful, awe-inspiring things Americans take for granted, and things that, well…aren’t exactly superior, despite USA pride.

Still, it’s interesting to see what mundane aspects of living in the US, both good and bad, might be a source of fascination to someone living outside the country. It can, after all, be easy to forget that the world contains a vast number of lifestyles, and one of the biggest benefits of existing in the modern age is being able to explore those different ways of life. Hopefully physically, but sometimes a good old fashioned internet thread does a pretty good job at giving us insight.

Check out what Europeans wanted to know about America below:

1. “Americans, do you think that political extremism is rising as drastically as it’s portrayed in media?”Jo-Gama

“Unfortunately, yes. The media likely makes it out to be worse than it is, but by doing so, they continue to push people in that direction.”Fat_Feline

“I think the media makes it sound worse than it is. We’re mostly aware it’s a problem, but we have so many other things to worry about. Rising prices of food, housing and gas affect us way more on a daily basis than racial/political issues. That being said, I also think that the fact we have protests and people speaking out means there’s a large part of this country that is actively working towards change. It’ll just take a while because many current politicians have been alive since polio was a legitimate concern to Americans.”carminie

america vs europe, reddit, politics, media, fake news

“I’ve seen it in person…Discourse is growing further and further from center and no one wants to talk about it anymore. My parents would often hold parties where their friends would talk politics and sure, maybe get a little heated – now politics is a no-go zone because no one can get along. Conversations evolve into arguments and fights and it’s just not worth it. And it’s leading a lot of people with differing views to refuse to mingle together, which makes things worse. The media certainly amplifies extreme voices, but the day-to-day reality is that those voices are all around us.” uarterRobot

2. “Do you acknowledge your heritage from European countries?” Mitchelljvb

“Yes, Americans love learning about their ancestry, we have DNA test and tv shows where people will learn about their families past. Most people with European ancestry are able to track their family to the original country they came from.” Nimzay98

3.” How can y’all call football (soccer) a boring sport but like American football, which has like a billion interruptions, and baseball, which has close to zero action?”TheCatInTheHatThings

“I think people dislike football (soccer) because of the lack of scoring, a team can make 10 attempts at goal and end up not scoring but the other team can make 1 attempt and make it in. And that one goal may be the only goal for the whole game. American football, on the other hand, with its yard system, means that any progress by either team ultimately counts towards the end result. There is also more scoring. As an American, I do not understand why anybody watches baseball. That still eludes me.”rand0m-nerd

“Which city in the US has the best public transit system in your opinion?” RoboGen123

“New York City, hands down.” kmobnyc

“Chicago over NYC imo.”Uhhsoka

4. “Do you ever get tired of how big your country is? Like getting from state to state could take much time as getting to France from England.”pasta_and_lobster

“Not at all. It’s actually one of the things I love most about the states. If you’re into outdoorsy activities, you’ll never run out of new places to explore. It’s also nice to be able to travel so far without the need for a passport.”anonandlit333

“Yep. Only problem is gas money lol.”SouthernMuadib

5.” Do you believe the US educational system needs a reform?” lotlotov

“Which US education system? It has like 3000 different education systems.”Due_Satisfaction2167

“It’s a very real and scary problem that our government is choosing to ignore.”wildflowersandroses

“Yes. It’s inequitable. Our taxes fund education, so rich towns have great school systems while those with lesser means get a lesser educational experience.”Username_goes_here_0

america vs europe, reddit, education

6. “How tf does the imperial system work?”Small_Cock_Jonny

“It’s mostly based around units that are intuitive and useful for daily tasks rather than scientifically rigorous. An inch is about the…the length of your top thumb joint…A foot is 12 inches because 12 is easily divisible by a lot of things, you can break it into quarters, halves, thirds, sixths or twelfths…The temperature scale goes from 0 degrees, which is about as cold as it naturally gets most places and also corresponds to the coldest temperature that saltwater can be before freezing, up to 100 degrees which is about as hot as it gets most places and also is close to the temperature of the human body. Overall there is a lot more emphasis on being able to cleanly divide things into halves and quarters, which doesn’t exist in metric. A pound is 16 ounces so it can be divided in half four times. A gallon is 16 cups, for the same reason. A cup is 8 ounces. All powers of two.” Cryptizard

7. “Your favourite place in the us? (city, landscape, landmark, whatever)” Ovreko

“This is kind of a cop out but National and State parks, Teddy Roosevelt did us good by protecting our natural resources for recreation.”RosePrecision

“I’m probably biased but southern California is a great place to visit. There’s a lot of climate diversity thanks to the mountains and deserts. There’s also the beaches, although I do think Hawaii has better beaches. New Mexico and Arizona are good to visit if you like indigenous culture.”FantasyBeach

North Carolina…. Such a slept on state, I miss that place. Mountains, beaches, food, major colleges, and nice cities all within 3hrs.”-Piff370z

america vs europe, reddit, american landmarks

8. “What’s with you guys and tipping, don’t get me wrong it’s great to tip but the way you guys make it seem bothers me.” Armysars

“Companies don’t pay their workers. It’s not entitlement but survival, especially if you’re on a tipped wage. You make around $2 per hour if you are under this wage. Keep in mind that you would need at least double minimum wage to afford an apartment.”Alarmed_Inflation_68

“It annoys us too. It gets worse year over year as well. I would rather we pay people a liveable wage from the outset than have them survive on tips. Tipping culture won’t go anywhere though, it gives business owners an excuse to pay their employees as little as possible.”Fat_Feline

9. “What do you learn in ‘science class’? Don’t you have separate classes of like physics, chemistry, biology etc.?” Gilbert_Grauschwanz

“Usually the early years are clumped together as ‘science class.’ When you get to middle/high school, the classes are separated. I remember taking earth science/geology, biology, physics, and chemistry.”Arumidden

“The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.”Alexandria-Rhodes

america vs europe, reddit

10. “Since WW2 the US has been at the forefront of innovation and has been responsible for many of humanity’s great accomplishments during this period…Does this give you a sense of pride or is it not that important from your perspectives?” Torridesttube69

“Honestly my national pride depends solely on who’s criticizing my country. A fellow American criticizing our economy? “yeah dude this country’s a shithole” A Brit*sh tourist criticizing our economy? “🇺🇸America🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅greatest🦅🦅 nation 🔫💪💪💪 on earth 🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸” overcork

Guy’s ‘buy again’ option for Walmart reveals how wild grocery inflation prices have become

People have been complaining about the increase in basic necessities for a while now. It seems that things are simply costing astronomically more now than they were jus a few short years ago Some people have been wondering if they’re nostalgically imagining things costing less or if there was a time where you didn’t need to take out a personal loan to buy groceries.

One TikTok creator that goes by the name Sewerlidd found himself in need of more groceries so he opened up his Walmart account to order some food. While in the account he saw the “reorder all” option (which is handy in a pinch) and decided to check out how much his groceries were a couple of years ago. Turns out, his groceries were a pretty reasonable price for 45 items.

It was when he clicked the “reorder all” button that the price of those exact same items seems to have sent him into a cold sweat.

“I feel like I’m going to be sick. I just looked through my Walmart history and I found my order from two years ago for the whole month worth of groceries. 45 items costs $126,” the man says before revealing the price jump. “Now, this order of 45 items for one month would’ve cost $414. That is four times more.”

The price difference is outrageous and commenters agree with the man, including a few of the sentence enhancers he uses to express his frustration.

@sewerlidd

“And this is why I went from buying healthy food back to only buying sandwich materials,” someone writes.

“I used to spend $180 for 2 weeks for my family of four and the dog. I am now spending upwards of $430 and trying to figure out what else I can cut. sorry kids you don’t get barbecue sauce,” a mom shares.

“I knew it was going to be bad. I didn’t know it was gonna be this bad,” another says.

“Yep. Have had to adjust what I wanted to buy at the grocery store based on how expensive everything is. Definitely stretching meals with rice and beans already,” someone else writes.

Other commenters don’t believe that his groceries increased that much, believing he’s exaggerating for shock value. Pricing does vary depending on what state you live in and what items you order, so it may be difficult to recreate the same exact situation. Companies like Walmart have also recently lowered the prices of several items which may be causing the discrepancy for others as well. Either way, people are feeling the effects of inflation while grocery shopping so here’s to hoping the price cuts stick.

Passengers give 5-year-old kid mid-air ceremony after he missed his kindergarten graduation

Five-year-old Xavier Rivas thought he would be missing the milestone of his one and only kindergarten graduation. But thanks to the kindness of strangers, he got an extra special memory sure to last him a lifetime.

Aboard a Frontier Airlines flight from Florida to Puerto Rico, an attendant announced over the loudspeaker that the young boy would be given his own mid-flight graduation ceremony, and asked the other passengers to help cheer him on.

In a clip posted to TikTok, we see not only Xavier beam in his cap and gown as he walks down the aisle while “Pomp and Circumstance” plays, but also the fellow passengers as they applaud and give him high fives.

Watch:

@alldayloveme Kindergarten graduation on Frontier Airlines! Lets all congratulate him! #kindergarten #graduation #frontierairlines #fypage #flightattendant ♬ original sound – Laci Alvarez

Other viewers noted how folks instantly lit up at the chance to make one kid’s day.

“It’s so cute when she said ‘kindergarten graduation everyone perked up. Like yes, let’s hype this little kid up lol.”

“I love how everyone went from 😠 to 🤩with the announcement.”

“I love how instantly happy everyone was. If only things were as simple today as they were when we were in kindergarten.”

“I cried so fast. This is what being human is all about.”

“It is simple human to human kindness that keeps us sane.”

With all the stories of bad plane behavior out there, this one feels extra refreshing for the soul. It’s just a little reminder that, at least in some ways, humans are hardwired to care for one another…even while thousands of feets in the air.

2024 NBA Draft Grades: Charlotte Hornets Roll The Dice With Tidjane Salaun, Get A ‘C+’

Tidjane Salaun
Getty Image

Team Needs: Shooting Guard, Power Forward, Perimeter Defense

The Charlotte Hornets were hoping to take a step back towards Play-In contention in 2023-24, but once again found themselves near the bottom of the East as they dealt with injuries to star guard LaMelo Ball and center Mark Williams, eventually trading away PJ Washington, Terry Rozier, and Gordon Hayward at the deadline. The good news is Brandon Miller acquitted himself nicely in his rookie season, showing that his offensive game could quickly translate to the NBA and he looks the part of being their small forward of the future.

With Ball and Miller in place, it’s now about building around those two, with Williams as an intriguing center option who could cement his place in the foundation with a healthy season. They need to bolster their defense while also adding more perimeter shooting around their stars. Shooting guard and power forward both figure to be areas they look to upgrade this summer, and defense figures to be of particular interest to them. With the No. 6 pick in the Draft, they opted to take the third Frenchman of the night, with Tidjane Salaun.

Tidjane Salaun (No. 6 Overall), C+: This is a total upside swing for Charlotte. Given where the Hornets are in their building process, that is a very reasonable way to approach the pick, albeit a little early for me for Salaun at this slot. But Salaun has immense tools, including a 9’2 standing reach and tremendous athletic potential. The overall package is raw, but there is a lot to like.
