When Does The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony Start?

Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
Getty Image

The 2024 Summer Olympics are nearly upon the world straight from Paris, France, bed bug fuss be damned. Snoop Dogg will be weed-free during his coverage gig, which means that he surely won’t be spotted lighting a blunt with the Olympic torch while carrying the relic. When can the public watch the ceremony to see whether Snoop breaks the rules with a smile on his face?

The opening ceremony will air via NBC (and simultaneously stream on Peacock) on July 26, 2024 at 1:30 PM EST. From there, get ready to vicariously live your basketball dreams along with wondering exactly how germy that the triathloners will get in the notoriously dirty Seine River. As well, sixteen days of wall-to-wall track and field events will be peppered with gymnastic feats and musical performances from Lady Gaga and Celine Dion, who are following after the video already filmed by Gwen Stefani and Anderson .Paak.

The fanfare will revolve around the first “normal” Olympics since the pandemic began, and 200 nations are there for the challenge. Hopefully, the 10,000+ athletes are rested and ready for their shot at bringing their countries to glory. Speaking of glorious, Snoop was pumped for the challenge of participating in ceremony coverage, and Salma Hayek (who is married to French business titan François-Henri Pinault) is also on the list of torch carriers, so the world will see them do their thing soon.

Shawn Mendes Teased His Album’s Tracklist And Sang An Unreleased Song While, Yes, Shirtless On Instagram

After canceling his Wonder tour in July 2022, Shawn Mendes is slowly re-emerging. In early March, Mendes announced he would headline Rock In Rio this September and slipped in, “I’ve also been working on a new album, and I can’t wait to play these new songs live for you.” Later that month, he teased a snippet of an unreleased song.

On Thursday, July 25, Mendes posted a full-blown behind-the-scenes teaser video to Instagram showing his process of making the album with collaborators Eddie Benjamin, Alex Pyle, Mike Sabath, and Scott Harris at Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, Washington.

At one point, Mendes is seemingly writing his forthcoming album’s tracklist on a whiteboard: “Honey,” “Just Wait,” “Isn’t That Enough,” “Hurt You,” “In Between,” “Heavy,” “That’s The Dream,” “The Mountain,” and “Why, Why, Why.”

Then, Mendes strums an acoustic guitar and records “Why, Why, Why.” The shirtless — Mendes is chronically shirtless on Instagram — Canadian pop star sings, “Opened up my journal to a page / Everything that hurts me’s still the same / Feels like there’s nothing new for me to say / Why, why, why / Why, why, why.”

Mendes has yet to officially announce anything album-related, but a release date seems likely to be sooner than later. Mendes’ last LP was Wonder in December 2020.

Watch Mendes’ video and read its accompanying caption below.

“Bear Creek Studio, Washington

“oh man this week in washington was magical. We were all living in this extremely special studio surrounded by these giant beautiful trees and i just have the most beautiful feelings when i think back to it

“i feel like this was when we really started to tap into the essence of the album and everything and it just started to flow…laughs, tears, truths, songs, whisky

“i wish i could show you every moment of making this album because it truly was so healing, but i’m glad you’re even getting a glimpse. This was to me some of the most memorable and enjoyable moments making music in my life

“i definitely learned so much about not taking myself too seriously in the studio those days & how that could actually often times lead me to exactly what i was searching for.”

SNX: This Week’s Best Sneakers, Including The Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4 RM SP ‘Grandma’s Driveway,’ Jordan 4 Wet Cement, Adidas Samba Made In Italy

snx_asphalt(1024x450)
Uproxx

Welcome to SNX DLX, your weekly roundup of the best sneakers to hit the internet.

After a brief bright spot last week, we’re back in the doldrums of this summer slump that has plagued us since the month started. But we’re almost out of it, we promise. We’ve looked ahead at the big brand’s sneaker release calendars and it looks like this low point in the sneaker year will end next week. We’re just going to call it right now — expect a full list of 10 come next week.

So what are we getting this week? Absolutely NOTHING. We’re kidding, there are still some notable drops arriving this week, including Nigel Sylvester’s latest Jordan 4 collaboration, a fancy elevated made in Italy Adidas Samba, and the Nike Air Jordan 4 Wet Cement.

It’s another short but strong list, so without further ado, let’s dive in to the best sneakers of the week.

Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4 RM SP ‘Grandma’s Driveway’

Nike

Price: $150

Pro BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester has joined forces with Nike once again for a new take on the Jordan 4 that celebrates the location of where Sylvester cut his BMX-teeth — his grandmother’s driveway.

Named, fittingly, “Grandma’s Driveway,” this Jordan 4 features an altered design from the OG. The upper is made from premium durable suede encased in a rubber caging system, with classic cotton laces and embroidered details throughout. The ‘Nike Air,’ branding at the heel has also been replaced with the word “Bike” above a swoosh.

There are enough alterations here that it looks like an entirely new silhouette! The sneaker drops in a rich forest green colorway, dubbed “Fence Green,” in reference to the green fence that ran parallel to Sylvester’s grandmother’s driveway. A “Driveway Grey,” colorway is scheduled to drop in the near future.

It’s a dope design and a clear sign that Nike needs to collaborate with more BMXers to provide a fresh spin on its classic silhouettes.

The Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4 RM SP ‘Grandma’s Driveway,’ is out now for a retail price of $150. Pick up a pair at Nike or your favorite aftermarket sites like GOAT and Flight Club.

New Balance 1906A Silver Metallic

New Balance

Price: $169.99
It’s not one of New Balance’s premium Made in USA releases, but there is still a lot to like in this week’s Silver Metallic 1906A. The sneaker features a mesh upper with synthetic overlays, an ABZORB SBS heel cushion, an ACTEVA LITE midsole, and inner tech that is designed to bring shock absorption and arch support to your step.

The colorway combines earthy rock tones and silver and gold metallic elements that make it simultaneously low-key and eye-catching. This sneaker is going to make a great beater pair for you to get things done in.

The New Balance 1906A Silver Metallic is out now for a retail price of $169.99. Pick up a pair at New Balance.

Adidas Samba Made in Italy

Adidas

Price: $350

Adidas’ roster of classic silhouettes is unparalleled, so anytime the brand wants to elevate one of those legendary silhouettes with premium construction, we’re here for it!

This Samba takes the classic silhouette and outfits it in shiny hand-polished Italian cow leather with hand-painted finishes and a classic black colorway with contrasting white stripes. It’s part classic soccer sneaker, part dress shoe.

The Adidas Samba Made In Italy is set to drop on July 25th at 7:00 AM PDT for a retail price of $350. Pick up a pair via the Adidas CONFIRMED app.

Nike Field General ’82 SP White and Black

Nike

Price: $100

2024 is the year of the Field General! This classic ‘80s football classic is fully back, we’ve seen multiple new drops, a high-profile collaboration with UnionLA, and now a classic white and black colorway.

This Field General sports a smooth leather upper with perforated details at the mid-panel, a thick-tread waffle, and a brown gum sole. This drop isn’t break-the-internet levels of exciting, but it would make a solid addition to your sneaker rotation.

The Nike Field General ’82 SP White and Black is set to drop on July 26th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $100. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Nike Air Jordan 4 SE Wet Cement

Nike

Price: $225

Sometimes, I can’t help but laugh at Nike’s colorway concepts. Let’s be real, this is an all gray Jordan 4, it looks great because gray is a classic sneaker color, all-over colors generally look interesting, and its a Jordan 4. For those three reasons alone, people are going to want to pick up this sneaker. But take a read at how Nike describes this shoe on its website:

“This ‘Wet Cement’ edition of the AJ4 draws inspiration from the cobblestone streets of Paris, evoking their rustic yet sophisticated aesthetic.”

Sure Nike. Whatever you say. The Wet Cement features a nubuck leather and suede upper in gray scale. It doesn’t make me think of Paris, but still, I love it.

The Nike Air Jordan 4 SE Wet Cement is set to drop on July 27th at 7:00 AM PST for a retail price of $225. Pick up a pair via the Nike SNKRS app.

Josh Hartnett Shared Matt Damon’s Very ‘Unhelpful’ Advice On The ‘Oppenheimer’ Set

Actors are known to change up their look for new roles, and some of them do it more intensely than others. You can get jacked up or get a perm or even CGI genitals, if that is what the movie requires.

For Oppenheimer, Josh Hartnett admitted that he gained 30 pounds for the role, which is not unheard of in Hollywood. But his co-star Matt Damon seemed to give him a hard time about it. “He gave me a lot of good advice. One in particular — one thing that was just so unhelpful: he told me not to gain the weight I’d already gained for the role,” Hartnett told Jimmy Fallon this week on The Tonight Show.

For his role of Ernest in Chris Nolan’s 2023 blockbuster, Hartnett put on some weight. “I gained about 30 pounds for the role, and [Damon] was like, ‘You’re never gonna get that off again, man.’” He said. Apparently, Damon has a strict “don’t gain weight over 40” rule for himself when it comes to choosing his movie roles.

Hartnett then explained Damon’s point of view. “He’s like, ‘You’re gonna spend the rest of your life trying to get that weight off and it’s never gonna come off because your body’s gonna want to get that weight back on. You’re just gonna keep growing back out to that size, and you’re going to try and get it off, but it’s just gonna go back,’” he recalled. “And he kept telling me, like, over the course of the production.” Statistically, this is what happens when most people diet, so in a way, he’s right, and you should never push your body to do something it doesn’t want to do. On the other hand, haven’t we learned not to trust everything that Matt Damon says?

Hartnett took the advice like a champ. “I was like, ‘Thanks, Matt. Thanks for telling me this now. I’ve already gained it.’” And he looks GREAT! Take that, Matt!! Coincidentally, Damon was also a guest on The Tonight Show last night, so they must have patched things up.

TRAP is in theaters on August 2nd. Check out the full interview above.

LeBron James Debuted The Nike LeBron 22 At USA Basketball Practice

Getty Image

LeBron James is getting set for an incredible 22nd season in the NBA, and as one of the very rare players to get a signature shoe as a rookie, that also means he and Nike are about to release the 22nd shoe in his signature line — the LeBron 22.

The LeBron line has had peaks and valleys in terms of popularity. There have been some sneakers (and some particular colorways) that have become cultural phenomenons — like the South Beach 8s — but there have also been plenty that have gotten a lukewarm reception. Part of that, for years, was that LeBron’s shoes needed to function for LeBron James on the basketball court, which meant they needed to stand up to an outrageous amount of force being applied to them, which led to some bulky, at times clunky designs.

In recent years, however, Nike and LeBron have recaptured their place atop the sneaker market with a more sleek design, starting with the LeBron 20s, tapping into the the low-top craze. The Olympics have long been a launching ground for new signature sneakers, dating back to the Dream Team, and on Thursday LeBron showed off a first look at the LeBron 22 at USA Basketball practice.

It’ll be interesting to see what the reception is to a pretty different aesthetic, although the overall silhouette is fairly similar to the 20s and 21s. The big Swoosh look is similar the Zoom Freak designs Giannis Antetokounmpo has been wearing, while there are also elements that are reminiscent of the Air Max Pennys.

Anderson .Paak And Gwen Stefani Could Medal In Vibes Based On Their ‘Hello World (Song Of The Olympics)’ Video

The 2024 Paris Olympics will kick off on Friday, July 26. Céline Dion and Lady Gaga are expected to perform at the opening ceremony, but Anderson .Paak and Gwen Stefani got a head start.

On Thursday, July 25, Anderson .Paak and Stefani released “Hello World (Song of The Olympics™)” with a video posted to the Olympics’ official YouTube channel.

“The Olympics and The Coca-Cola Company teamed up with Ryan Tedder, Gwen Stefani, and Anderson .Paak to create a song that celebrates the magic that happens when the world comes together at the Olympic Games,” the YouTube description reads.

Tedder co-produced and co-wrote the feel-good anthem. In the video, .Paak sets the tone by singing, “Hello, world, where ya been? / I’ve been waiting for you and your friends / One love begins / Tip-top, we’re starting at ten / If you believe that we can make some magic happen, say yeah.”

.Paak’s performance is spliced with footage of Olympic athletes being generally awesome, and eventually, we’re joined by a glittery Stefani. “I was mindin’ my business, taking care of business,” she sings. “Doin’ my thing / Woke up in the middle of the night like, ‘Ooh’ / Heard the telephone ring / I don’t need to tell you, I don’t need to explain / It’s ‘Hello World,’ we showin’ up, we changing the game.”

The 2024 Paris Olympics will run from July 26 to August 11, and you can expect to hear this song umpteen times in between.

Hugh Jackman Sweated Straight Through His Shirt On An Especially Torturous ‘Hot Ones’

Hugh Jackman is, just like his name, pretty jacked and intimidating. Yes, he seems charming and nice, but he’s known for playing Wolverine, so he is comfortable around violence and chaos. This is the type of guy you want on your side if the world ever came down to an apocalyptic situation. But we have recently learned that Hugh Jackman is, unfortunately, nothing when it comes to spicy food (as his armpits showed around the 13:00 mark above).

Jackman and his partner in crime Ryan Reynolds have been all over the globe to promote Deadpool & Wolverine, but it seems like the only thing Wolverine can’t do is tolerate hot sauce. The duo joined Sean Evans on Hot Ones, where Jackman appeared to be going through the various stages of grief, including:

Shock:

First We Feast

Pain:

First We Feast

Bargaining:

First We Feast

Depression

First We Feast

Acceptance

First We Feast

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds acted like he was taking the most serious proctored exam of his entire life.

The two talked about what it was like to reunite for Deadpool & Wolverine, which had originally included a fake-out plan. “The original idea with this movie was to shoot a fake movie called Alpha Cop, that was intentionally bad… It was about two guys that were sharing one brain and together they make the perfect cop…and the poster says Alpha Cop: two cops, one brain, all balls,” Reynolds explained. “And it was meant to be kind of like horrible. Like 10 people in America would go to see this movie on opening weekend and five minutes into the movie the Marvel logo would flip up and it would actually be Deadpool & Wolverine.” If that were the case, we would have missed out on all of this fun Wolverine promo.

While most of the discussion over wings consisted of Deadpool tidbits in between Hugh’s crying, he did share the story of his earliest job: a clown. “I literally rented a clown outfit…and we had no skills, literally no skills…I broke my rule and I did an 8 year old’s party. I always knew they were going to find me out and he found me out and this kid yelled to his mom ‘mom, this clown is crap’. And I’m like ‘shut up, kid.’” And this must have been what inspired him to play a loner superhero with metal claws. He can finally shut those kids up!

Check out the full interview above.
