‘Apartment 7A’: Everything To Know So Far About The Spooky ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Prequel

apartment-7a-5
Gareth Gatrell/Paramount+

Everyone loves a good origin story (sometimes), but what about the humble beginnings of an allegedly cursed apartment building infested with cult members? That would surely be interesting.

Apartment 7A is the upcoming prequel to the 1968 horror classic Rosemary’s Baby starring Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes as a couple that moves into a new apartment building and become pregnant, only to start suspecting that their neighbors are in on something a little bit more sinister. The movie was based on the hit novel of the same name.

After a panned TV adaptation, a prequel went into development back in 2021. After the success of the Quiet Place franchise, John Krasinski set out to produce another film with a similar existential tone, and demonic babies surely takes the cake. He is producing alongside Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Julia Garner joined the project shortly after, and now the movie is finally shaping up. Here is everything you need to know.

Plot

The movie takes place in 1965, just a few years before Rosemary and her husband move into The Bramford, and centers on Terry Gionoffrio, a former dancer who is taken in by an older couple after a brutal injury. But soon she learns that they might not be the warm and fuzzy elderly couple she thought. Here is the official synopsis:

When fellow resident and influential Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess, Across the Universe) offers her another chance at fame, it seems that all her dreams are finally coming true. However, after an evening she can’t fully remember, disturbing circumstances soon have her second-guessing the sacrifices she’s willing to make for her career as she realizes that something evil is living not only in Apartment 7A but in the Bramford itself.

Terry also appears in the beginning of Rosemary’s Baby, so we know a little bit about where she ends up, but no spoilers yet! It should also be noted that Amy Leeson is credited as Rosemary, so there might be some overlap in the story here.

Cast

Julia Garner will portray Terry, the ambitious dancer who struggles after a disastrous injury. She is taken in by a couple, Margaux “Minnie” Castevet and Roman Castevet (Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally), who seem to have some minor satanic connections. It happens! Early reports say that Wiest is “diabolically hilarious” while Garner acts “totally committed” to her role.

Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith also star.

Release Date

Filming took place in London in the spring of 2022, with reshoots last May. Apartment 7A will skip the theatrical release and head straight to Paramount+ on September 27th. You can also stream the original Rosemary’s Baby on Paramount+ now.

Trailer

There is no trailer just yet, but here is the original Rosemary’s Baby trailer, so you can get a feel for what they’re going for here. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Latto Claims She Has No Interest In A Rap Battle With Ice Spice, And Her Reasoning Might Be A Bit Of Shade

Uproxx cover star Latto has put everything on the floor when it comes to her foe Ice Spice. Anytime a subliminal was sent her way, the “Big Mama” rapper has stayed true to her motto, “Get in the booth, b*tch.”

However, when asked by Billboard if she would take on Ice Spice in a rap battle, Latto politely declined. This is quite ironic coming from the forthcoming season two judge on Netflix’s rap competition show, Rhythm + Flow. But in today’s (July 19) interview, Latto explained why.

“If I was to do [a battle], it would have to be with somebody I feel like I’mma go tit-for-tat with,” she said. “I really don’t mean it as shade. Would she even want to do that?”

Although Latto says she didn’t intend for the response to be shade, it can certainly be perceived that way. Latto doesn’t have any interest in a full on battle, but she isn’t above responding with a track.

At the top of the year, Ice Spice dropped “Think U The Sh*t (Fart)” a direct jab at Latto. Following the bathroom-centered bars, Latto responded with “Sunday Service.” In the official video, Latto reportedly even visited Ice Spice’s childhood neighborhood to film parts of the visual.

Kith Is Releasing A Vintage USA Basketball Collection For The Olympics

USA Basketball is in the midst of ramping up for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, with the men’s squad in Abu Dhabi for an exhibition slate (and off to a 3-0 start) while the women’s squad is in Phoenix where their camp coincides with WNBA All-Star Weekend, which pits Team USA against the WNBA All-Stars in Olympic years.

Both teams are the strong favorites to take home the gold medals, as has been the case for the entire existence of basketball in the Olympic games. The men’s side have won 16 of the 20 golds at the Olympics, while the women have won gold in 9 of the 12 women’s competitions. That is a considerable legacy for USA Basketball, and that rich history lends itself to some terrific retro merchandise opportunities. The looks worn by the Dream Team, in particular, are fan favorites, and ahead of the 2024 Games, USA Basketball partnered with Kith to create a special collection that will release on July 22 (Kith.com and Kith retailers) featuring that iconic logo — with USA star Kevin Durant modeling part of the collection.

The Kith for USA Basketball collection features jackets, crewnecks, hoodies, vintage-washed tees, sweatpants, and shorts. Kith also redesigned the courtyard at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris to be a USA Basketball court where fans on site in Paris can view the collection — with it being for purchase at the Kith Paris store down the street.

No One Is Kicking ‘Twisters’ Star Katy O’Brian’s Ass (Not Even Tom Cruise)

Katy O Brian Twisters Interview
Getty Image/Merle Cooper

Being busy suits Katy O’Brian. In fact, the few hours of downtime she’s enjoying between filming scenes for her just-announced zombie comedy (helmed by George A. Romero’s daughter) are enough to leave her “bored out of her mind.”

That’s partly why she’s stayed booked these past few years, skipping from Star Wars series to Marvel sequels, bodybuilding romance thrillers and disaster blockbusters. But forward momentum is only half the story. O’Brian’s unlikely rise to go-to action hire has also come thanks to her persistence, her willingness to confront the challenge of preconceived notions on which characters she can convincingly play, and the ease with which she smashes them (sometimes, literally). She did that in Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding earlier this year, playing a professional bodybuilder caught up in a dangerous love story, and she’s set to do it again — in Tina Romero’s Queer sci-fi comedy about a group of drag queens slaying the undead and in the upcoming Mission Impossible installment.

But right now? Right now, she’s chasing tornadoes in Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters.

O’Brian had just two hours to speed read Chung’s script before signing on to the role of Dani, a member of Glen Powell’s slightly unhinged Tornado Wranglers crew. Outfitted in a western belt buckle and ten-gallon cowboy hat, O’Brian admits that split decision came with unforeseen consequences – outrunning actual storms while filming in Tornado Alley during tornado season and dining on motel dinners for three months straight – but ultimately, she took the role so that when audiences flocked to theaters, they see her in a different light.

We spoke with O’Brian about the struggle to avoid typecasting, her Midwestern upbringing and its ties to the film, and her rom-com ambitions.

You’ve had a couple of big years. Do you feel the pressure to keep working at a certain pace now?

I really just love working with creative people on creative projects, so I’m hoping that I get to continue to do that. I’m getting to do a fun little project with George Romero’s daughter. I’m filming that right now. Then Mission Impossible comes out next year, and I don’t know what else. Just keep hiring me, please.

Has Tom Cruise been kicking your ass?

[laughs] I really can’t talk about anything Mission Impossible but … no one kicks my ass.

Stunts and fight scenes are one thing, mother nature is another. You’re from the Midwest, was anything about filming Twisters triggering for you?

The weather doesn’t bother me. I didn’t know that I would be there as long as I would. That was something that might’ve made me take pause just because it was a long time away from your family and we were kind of living in motels with just microwaves and mini fridges. I have a bowel disease and that’s very difficult for me. So I think I would’ve taken a little bit more pause and kind of come up with a better plan. But in all honestly, it’s really hard to say no to a project that Isaac is working on.

Would you call yourself an adrenaline junkie?

I would say no, because I tend to just be happy chilling at home, but the second someone’s like, ‘Let’s go do this crazy thing,’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, let’s do that!’ So I guess as long as I’ve got a partner and it feels competently safe, if someone asked me to go skydiving tomorrow, I would be a hundred percent down. I just started rock climbing because I’m afraid of heights. It’s one of those things that, if you fear it, chase it. Right?

Yeah, there’s a fine line between that adrenaline rush and the desire to actually help people that your character in the film has. You worked as a police officer before becoming an actor, so you have to be familiar with that. How much did your background play a role here?

Even in high school I taught disaster preparedness with the Red Cross — I would go around to middle schools and elementary schools and just little events and stuff. It’s kind of always been on my radar of how things affect people. My mom has always been a nonprofit volunteer. So it’s just taking into account that there are these spectacles of nature like a tornado or a hurricane, and they’re beautiful to watch because the world is so powerful and it just kind of humbles you. But if you are chasing it … some people maybe do it for the adrenaline rush, some people do it for research. I was talking to girls who chase and a lot of them are doing it to help guide people to tell them, ‘Hey, the tornado’s going this way.’

It’s to help people and not just to get excited seeing a tornado. So I wanted to bring that into my character as best we could, and I really did love that Tyler’s group does that. They go in and they respect nature, but they also understand the damage that it can do, how severe and serious it is, and they keep a level head in those moments where they know that they have to go in and help people out.

Being able to stay calm in a crisis, assess your emotions in the moment, is that important as an actor as well?

Yeah, you have to because then otherwise you become that person that is unsafe to work with. There was a scene in Love Lies Bleeding, for instance, where originally I was on cocaine and drunk. I was going around throwing things in the house or whatever and at the end of the day, I’m kind of manhandling Kristen a little bit. I’m bigger than her. And it’s one of those things, my heart is racing, I feel a little blurred or whatever, but if you can’t separate yourself from that just a little bit and maintain just a little bit of sanity, you could really hurt somebody and yourself. And that to me is just not worth anything. It’s really important to be aware of where you are in a space. You could turn around and smash your face in the camera. You could punch a wall and break your hand. There’s so many things you can do if you’re not really thinking it through.

After a film like that, do you still feel like you’re fighting against being typecast?

Yeah, unfortunately. That’s one thing that I really did love about Twisters is I just got to be this cowboy hat wearing bit of comic relief. It’s a role that people don’t usually get to see me in. I still get the badass military [offers] and if the script is great, look, I’m here for it. But yeah, I’m trying really to branch out and it’s so hard.

And a lot of it is because people like sci-fi action, they like military. I do enjoy action movies, but I like Jackie Chan Kung fu fun where the fight scenes are kind of the big thing and it’s not about the explosions. I like when the characters are well developed and people have onus of their characters. It’s one thing I love about Twisters, it’s not just your [typical] blockbuster movie. Isaac does a great job of making you actually care about the characters. So I’m trying to branch out and if it’s something that’s interesting and new and unique, then I want to do it. But throw a rom-com at me. I got you.

Your physicality helps you land some roles, then shuts you out of others. Is there a conflict between wanting to stay fit and strong, and knowing that certain parts are going to be harder to get because of it?

Yeah, that’s just not within my control. I’ve seen people get turned down for roles because the husband was younger and they didn’t want the wife to be older than the husband. And it’s just like, ‘What are you talking about?’ It’s such a silly reason to turn somebody down that’s the best actor for the role. So much of that’s outside of my control. It is something that definitely makes you kind of want to start producing your own stuff, writing your own stuff. I’m finding that it is important to do that just because it’s like, ‘Well, if this industry is not going to see me this way, then I have to show or I have to do it myself,’ basically. So I can’t let that bother me. I’m going to continue to do what I want to do for my own health and my own confidence. And if people can’t understand that you can be a strong muscular woman and also a mom. I just have to build my own stuff.

‘Twisters’ is in theaters now.

‘Trapped’ wife who married a ‘mama’s boy’ gets 10 helpful pieces of advice on how to move on

A woman on Reddit is sharing a problem that far too many women experience: being married to a man who won’t do his fair share around the house. But this woman, who goes by the user name Fantastic_Guess1918, 28, appears to be in an extreme situation. Her husband, 33, does absolutely nothing and hasn’t worked in over a year.

She says the big problem is that he’s a “mama’s boy” who never had any responsibilities growing up and hasn’t taken on any as an adult. His mother owns a business and created a position he’s had since 16, but he never goes to work and still gets paid.

Even though he doesn’t bother going to work, the wife still takes on 100% of the domestic responsibilities in the home. She was so frustrated that she asked for help on the Relationship Advice forum.

“My husband and I have been married for 10+ years and I’m now learning what weaponized incompetence is,” she opens her story, referencing a passive-aggressive tactic people use to avoid responsibility. He also lives like a slob, making Mountain Dew pyramids on the side of the bed and throwing rotten food down the sink, even though they don’t have a garbage disposal.

“I was young and naive when we got married and assumed that he would grow up. That he would share the housework and not leave me with literally everything,” she continued. “I honestly didn’t even expect 50/50. I would have taken 90% if he’d just do 10%. He did nothing. I mean NOTHING. I didn’t want to put up with it and I tried my hardest not to. We argued about it all the time.”

To make things worse, Fantastic_Guess1918 has severe depression which makes keeping up with household duties even more difficult. She hopes to one day have two children, but those dreams have been dashed because she is already raising a childish husband.

The situation got so bad she gave an “empty threat” of divorce, and he did the dishes. “I was in shock, the first thing he’s done. Immediately afterward my rocky confidence in his ability to change was shattered more when he approached me and wanted PRAISE for cleaning the dishes,” Fantastic_Guess1918 wrote.

“I just feel like I’m in such a bad place now, and I feel completely trapped,” she told the Relationship Advice forum. ”I don’t want to leave; I just want things to be better. I want him to hear me. I want him to care about how stressed I constantly am.”

The good news is that the forum posters gave her some very good advice, although it probably wasn’t exactly what she wanted to hear.

1. Get a divorce

“I can’t even begin to tell you how many women I’ve known in situations like this (it’s literally in the triple digits). Absolutely NONE of those men EVER changed. If anything, they just got worse the longer their atrocious lack of effort was enabled/put up with.”

“It’s easier to dump a mama’s boy than to divorce a mama’s boy, and both are easier than trying to change a mama’s boy.”

2. You’re choosing this

“You are choosing this life by staying. You are choosing to be stressed out by a partner who doesn’t care about you. He’s never had to care about or take care of anything or anyone. Why would he magically start now? Because you want him to? People don’t change just because we want them to; they change when THEY want to.”

3. Get a job

“The ability to leave is to negotiate from strength with a partner. As long as you sit there saying ‘I have nowhere to go!’ you are giving him all the power. Open a private account, put your pay there.”

4. Reframe the narrative

“It helps to keep this perspective: you’re not trapped, you’re in planning mode. Once you start making a plan for your escape, you will feel FAR less trapped. It doesn’t matter if that plan takes 1 year, 2 years or 3 years. You can come up with a plan that will allow you to leave your husband eventually.”

5. Stop working for him

“If he constantly leaves junk around the house, buy a big container and just drop all of errant junk into that container. If he doesn’t cook or do laundry, only cook or do laundry for yourself. You can even buy yourself a locking mini fridge and keep your leftovers and groceries in that fridge so he doesn’t benefit from your labor.”

“Find ways so his mess can remain his problem — even if that just means constantly putting his junk in the trash when he refuses to pick it up. Be petty with it (you’ve earned it) and have fun!”

6. Get a housekeeper

“Have him pay for a maid to do his half of the work and stop arguing about it. That’s the only way to continue the marriage. If he has ‘don’t go to work for a year’ money, he has housekeeper money.”

7. Men don’t grow up

“My dad told me something that made a huge impact on me. He said that men don’t ‘grow up’ and don’t ‘mature.’ They are who they are whether they’re 5, 15, or 55. That’s who they are and that’s who they are always going to be.”

8. Depression lies to you

“You are not trapped, that’s just the lie your depression tells you. You have the power to break free, you just don’t believe in yourself.”

9. Get a support system

“Do you have a therapist, etc? You need someone to talk to about these issues! There are so many concerns you have implied may exist, but not delineated. Do you not have any kind of support system? Parents, siblings, old friends, other relatives? If not, it’s time for you to put on your big girl panties and get a life. You need to make a life for yourself! That includes a job, money management, housing, etc. This balloon you are living within is about to pop.”

10. He was made that way

“The way your husband’s mommy makes excuses for him and treats him like a baby is how so many momma’s boys are raised. Mom Boys are raising defective men ON PURPOSE. Because they don’t want to be ‘abandoned.’ Do not be with a momma’s boy!! Look out for yourself.”

Even though the woman said she didn’t want to leave her husband and only wanted him to understand her situation, she was given a lot of hard truths about her marriage. She is fighting an uphill battle trying to turn her husband into a responsible man when he was raised to let the women in his life do everything for him. So, the good news is that even though she may not want to leave him, she received a lot of practical advice on gaining independence from him so she can at least forge her own path instead of being dependent on a man who gives little in return.

Bruce Springsteen Was Born To Make Money As He Joins The Billionaires Club Alongside Taylor Swift, Rihanna, And More

“Johnny 99”? More like Johnny 999,999,999 (plus one). Forbes reports that Bruce Springsteen is the latest musician to join the billionaire club with a net worth of $1.1 billion.

The other members include Rihanna, Jay-Z, and Taylor Swift. And like Swift, the first one to “reach the milestone solely from songwriting and performing,” Springsteen made his billion the ol’ fashioned way: releasing albums and touring.

Back in 1984, around the release of Born In The U.S.A., Springsteen talked to Rolling Stone about if becoming a rich man changed him, saying, “Yeah, there’s a change. It doesn’t make living easier, but it does make certain aspects of your life easier. You don’t have to worry about rent, you can buy things for your folks and help out your friends, and you can have a good time, you know?”

Springsteen added, “I don’t know if money changes you. I guess I don’t really think it does change you. It’s an inanimate thing, a tool, a convenience. If you’ve got to have a problem, it’s a good problem to have.”

Springsteen is 74 years old but still going strong. According to Forbes, “In 2023, Springsteen’s world tour sold more than 1.6 million tickets, generating $380 million in revenue,” with more dates (and a movie based on his life) to come.

‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 2: Everything To Know So Far About The Unexpected Continuation Of The Jake Gyllenhall Series

Presumed Innocent Jake Gyllenhaal
Apple TV+

Warning: Potential spoilers for the Presumed Innocent novel will be found below — you were warned 🙂

Jake Gyllenhaal is turning into the king of projects that were intended as one-offs or “limited series” into instant sequel material. That’s why the Road House reboot will receive a sequel on Prime Video/Amazon, and Apple TV+ recently decided to make the same move. Not only has Presumed Innocent received a renewal that will take it beyond the original source material (Scott Turow’s 1987 novel, which previously inspired a lone Harrison Ford movie), but the renewal has happened before the first season has even concluded.

In other words, viewers have not yet seen whether Jake’s accused-of-murder prosecutor, Rusty, will walk free or end up behind bars — a decision that will be made clear with the season finale arriving on July 24. Yet what was originally envisioned as an eight-part limited series will continue after Presumed Innocent became Apple TV+’s “most watched drama” series since the tech giant’s journey of streaming TV series launched in 2019.

Let’s get down to business on what could happen after the season finale.

Plot

A Scott Turow book (or books) exists that could provide plenty of material for a followup season, but first, it’s worth turning to Apple TV+’s press release, which understandably (since the season finale hasn’t aired yet) stays vague about a “brand new case” to be explored:

Following its widely acclaimed premiere last month, led by a gripping performance by Academy Award-nominated star and executive producer Jake Gyllenhaal, Apple TV+ today announced that its global hit series “Presumed Innocent” is set to return for a second season that will unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.

A “new case” could mean several different directions, but assuming that the show ends in the same way as the movie, Rusty would in fact walk free from murder charges, and the murder of his colleague/affair partner, Carolyn, will (publicly) remain unsolved. The book also includes Rusty’s awareness that Rusty’s wife, Barbara, actually committed the murder, but there’s no guarantee that the show will go the same way.

What could be next? Apple TV+ could choose an option for the second season to follow Turow’s 2010 followup book, Innocent, which also revolves around Rusty and deputy prosector Tommy Molto (Peter Sarsgaard in the first season) coming to legal blows again with the following book synopsis (and Rusty does have another affair, what a shocker) from Grand Central Publishing:

The sequel to the genre-defining, landmark bestseller Presumed Innocent, INNOCENT continues the story of Rusty Sabich and Tommy Molto who are, once again, twenty years later, pitted against each other in a riveting psychological match after the mysterious death of Rusty’s wife.

The catch here is that Innocent picks up 20 years after the end of Presumed Innocent, so that presents some obvious difficulties with casting continuity. Of course, the timeline could always be bumped up, and if, however, they do choose to keep Gyllenhaal as an actor, a Redditor has suggested, “They could just pull a Criston Cole on Jake Gyllenhaal and just age up everyone around him.” As long as they have someone else say, “Nothing’s beneath me, I once f*cked an ottoman,” that option would be worth rolling with for laughs.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that Scott Turow does feature minor characters from Presumed Innocent in other books. So there are a variety of second-season options if the story continues that way, and within Turow’s entire library, literally dozens of books that could be tweaked for second-season material. Hopefully, viewers won’t have to wait forever for some clarity.

Gyllenhaal will definitely return as an executive producer alongside David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams, and Turow will be onboard as co-executive producer. Whatever happens here, a built-in audience of devoted book readers will be ready to drink in the continuation of this no-longer-limited series.

Cast

Apple TV+ hasn’t confirmed whether Gyllenhaal’s character will emerge in the second season, either as a main character (with the timeline set differently than the book) or in a supporting role. Actually, the whole topic of casting remains a mystery.

Release Date

This isn’t a special-effects laden series, although we shouldn’t expect a quick turnaround because the second season still (presumably) needs scripts. So, 2026 will possibly be when we see the series continue.

Trailer

Since no trailer exists yet, here’s a blast from the past with the Harrison Ford trailer of yesteryear.

If you guessed that Rex Orange County would hit the road this year, you were right: Today (July 19), the “Open A Window” singer announced his live performance plans.

Beginning in October, Rex will travel across North America for the Finally: A Theatre Tour to support his forthcoming album, The Alexander Technique. Then in February 2025, supporters in the UK will have a chance to catch him live at The London Palladium.

In a statement, Rex discussed the intention behind the forthcoming tour’s structuring and venue selection.

“I’ve always played bigger and bigger shows,” he said. “But I wanted to do something different for this particular project because sonically the new songs lend themselves to being heard in a more intimate and traditional setting. These particular venues have allowed me to create a show with a theatrical stage set to further narrate the themes of the album alongside the music.”

The UK presale starts on July 24 at 9 a.m. local time. An hour later, presale tickets for North American dates will kick off. General sales for both the US and UK will launch on July 26 at 10 a.m. local time. Find more information here.
