Steve Martin has the best response to hearing that his book was banned in Florida

Over the past few years, book bans have been happening in public libraries and schools across America. In the 2022-2023 school year alone, over 3,300 books were banned in 182 school districts in 37 states.

Most books that have been banned deal with LGBTQ and racial themes. According to a report from PEN America, Florida has been the most aggressive state regarding book bans, accounting for about 40% of those taken off the shelves.

On November 5, Collier County, Florida, announced that it was banning 300 books from its school libraries out of an effort to comply with state law HB 1069, which says books that depict or describe “sexual content” can be challenged for removal.

Among the books banned by the school district was “Shopgirl,” a novella by author Steve Martin published in 2000. Martin is also the star of the hit Hulu show, “Only Murders in the Building,” featuring Martin Short and Selena Gomez.

Upon hearing about his book being banned, Martin responded with his iconic wit on Instagram, saying, “So proud to have my book Shopgirl banned in Collier County, Florida! Now, people who want to read it will have to buy a copy!”

“Shopgirl” is a story about a young woman who works in a luxury department store and has an affair with a wealthy older man. It was made into a movie in 2005 starring Claire Danes and Martin. It’s believed the book was banned for its mild sexual content. On Amazon, the book is recommended for readers ages 13 and up.

‘Britain’s Got Talent’ contestant blew Simon Cowell away singing a song he ‘hates’

Contestants on “Britain’s Got Talent” (as well as “American Idol” and “America’s Got Talent”) have long feared Simon Cowell’s judgment, so imagine auditioning with a song choice that automatically brings out his sour side.

That’s what contestant Sydnie Christmas did when she chose to sing “Tomorrow” from the musical “Annie,” which is Simon Cowell’s least favorite song. But much to everyone’s surprise, she totally blew him away with her beautiful soulful rendition, causing him to change his tune.

Before performing, Christmas bounded onto the stage with her genuine smile and spunky energy, which endeared her to the judges and audience immediately. She even cracked a joke about her middle name being “Mary” (Sydnie Mary Christmas would be quite the name choice) and got everyone laughing with her.

However, when she announced she’d be singing “Tomorrow,” Cowell winced and the other judges groaned.

“That is Simon’s worst song,” warned judge Amanda Holden.

But when Christmas, who works as a receptionist at a gym, began to sing, it soon became clear that this wasn’t an ordinary rendition of the musical classic. Soulful, heartfelt, sad but hopeful, she built the song up bit by bit, bringing the audience along with her on an emotional ride.

Watch:

Not only did she get the coveted Golden Buzzer, but she also managed to get Simon Cowell to say he now loves the song he said he’d hated just minutes before. Viewers loved it, too.

“That was the first time I could take this song serious. Before today I hated it, too,” wrote one person.

“When they say you have to make the song your own, she did just that. I have never heard a better version,” wrote another.

“Absolutely beautiful; love how the word “tomorrow” always sounded unique EVERY TIME! Listened over and over…” added another.

“I’ve heard that song a million times and she REALLY got the poignancy of it,” shared another. “It is a sad song, but a song of hope, and it is hard to walk that line and she KILLED IT. It’s not just about her voice, it is how she sold that song.”

She even pulled in people from various walks of life, moving them with her performance:

“I’m a 60 year old highway worker. Just got off work and my wife sent this to me. What I’m trying to figure out is who’s been cutting onions in my vehicle? Seriously, teared me up. This took me COMPLETELY off guard and I am so delighted to have experienced this diamond!”

“41 year old hip hop head here and never did I think I would be touched like this. The sound of suffering with a glimmer of hope in the sound. Who is cutting onions at this time.”

“I’m a 60 year old builder sitting in my van having lunch. I just watched this. The guys in the next van are taking the P coz I’m crying my eyes out! Brilliant!”

As someone named Annie, I’ve had “Tomorrow” sung to me countless times over the years, so I shared Simon Cowell’s initial grimace upon hearing what she was going to sing. But I too was moved by Christmas’s performance and gained a whole new appreciation for the song after her gorgeous rendition. Not an easy feat. What a delightful surprise for us all.

Blxst Drops His Debut Album, ‘I’ll Always Come Find You’ With The ‘I Need Your Love’ Video Featuring Ty Dolla Sign

It seems absurd to consider, but Blxst is only just now releasing his debut album, I’ll Always Come Find You, today. That’s right, despite his star-making project No Love Lost being nearly four years old, and Blxst dropping a wealth of music since then — including two Just for Clarity EPs, the Before You Go mixtape, and three Sixtapes with Bino Rideaux — and curating a soundtrack for NBA2K, I’ll Always Come Find You is technically the LA rap crooner’s first album. Here’s the thing: It’s a really good one.

See: the video for “I Need Your Love,” the Ty Dolla Sign colllaboration that displays Blxst’s newly increased range as an artist. Blxst previously showed off his expanded sound with “Dance With The Devil” featuring Anderson .Paak, and the album goes several steps further. By now, we’ve heard enough from him to know what to expect. All over the album, though, he subverts those expectations, expanding from the G-funk-laced neo soul he engendered on past projects to a new wealth of stylistic influences, including Afrobeats, dance music, and more. The results should speak for themselves.

You can watch Blxst’s “I Need Your Love” video featuring Ty Dolla Sign above.

I’ll Always Come Find You is out now via Red Bull Records / Evgle LLC. You can find more info here.

The Crowdstrike Crash Has Prompted Global Frustration And Chaos, Along With The Most Inevitable Movie Jokes

Crowdstrike airport
Getty Image

Americans awoke to chaos on Friday morning as a global tech outage, apparently caused by a CrowdStrike software-update issue, left travelers wondering what to do after becoming stranded in airports. The blip has essentially ground the world to a halt while pausing healthcare and banking systems with the “blue screen of death.” Reuters has reported that the cybersecurity firm “deployed a fix,” but of course, the chaos will take awhile to clean up, and people are coping as best they can.

Those mechanisms include jokes, which are frankly not the worst way to deal with a situation like this, which hasn’t (that we know of) physically hurt anybody but has sparked a world of frustration. And this honestly is probably the best time possible for a Space Force quip to surface on social media.

Elsewhere, a modified (but now fixed) Wikipedia entry claimed that the crash triggered the “second dark ages.”

And of course, a situation like this wouldn’t be complete without jokes about James Cameron’s The Terminator (which will soon launch a new Netflix anime series, by the way), and here we are:

Happy Friday? This has kickstarted the weekend early for a few people, but boy, being in an airport would not be fun right now.

Damon Albarn Thinks People On Phones At Concerts Is A Performer Problem, He Explained In Response To Bob Dylan’s Policy

Since the dawn of cellphones, there have been those who have used them to film videos at concerts, and there have been those who have complained about it. Uproxx’s Steven Hyden previously argued that filming at shows is good, but Bob Dylan appears to disagree.

Dylan has a tour coming up, and on that tour, he has banned attendees from using their phones during the show. This is a policy with which Gorillaz and Blur leader Damon Albarn disagrees.

In an interview with BBC, Albarn said of Dylan’s phone-free tour, “If you start banning things, where does it end? I think you’ve just got to turn up and do your thing. People won’t want to be on their phone if you’re engaging with them correctly.”

This comes not long after at a concert last week, Fantasia called out her fans for being on their phones, saying, “So I wanna tell you now: We’re living in a world where y’all can’t have fun because you’ve been too busy trying to film stuff. So wack now. And we as performers, we be up here working and y’all [gestures holding up phone]. You know the money that you pay in here tonight you could’ve done something else with it. So if you paid the money, you might as well get your [money’s worth].”

Did JT Diss Cardi B On ‘City Cinderella?’

City Girls JT 2021 Revolt Summit
Getty Image

After months of anticipation, JT’s debut solo mixtape, City Cinderella, has hit streaming platforms. Since the disbandment of City Girls, the “Sideways” rapper has endured immense pressure from the public to outdo her work in the culture shifting duo.

Unfortunately, during the transition, JT found herself in a heap of beefs (GloRilla, Sukihana, and Cardi B). So, naturally her super fans, the Juvies, hoped that she would address it on the body of work and that she did. The most notable being toward her former collaborator Cardi B.

Did JT Diss Cardi B On City Cinderella?

The answer to this question is yes, and multiple times, according to fans. Supporters of both ladies have taken to their social media platforms to call out the subtle jabs across the album on tracks “Intro (Hope),” “Servin,” and the project’s single, “Okay.”

On “Intro (Hope),” JT brought up a longstanding rumor about Cardi B’s time as an exotic dancer. Users alleged that Cardi performed a NSFW party trick during one of her shifts with an alcohol bottle. Back in 2018, Cardi B denied the rumors. But that didn’t stop JT from joking about it, rapping:

“Non-rapping b*tch who the f*ck you talking to / I was off in Saks Gucci alligator bags while you was laying on your back and shoving bottles in your ass.”

Then on “Servin,” JT clapped back at Cardi B’s remarks about her fashion sensibilities. Previously, the pair were entangled in a heated exchange on X (formerly Twitter) about JT ripping looks from Cardi B’s past, among other things. She raps on “Servin”:

“I got on sh*t you can’t pronounce, wait, let me spell it out / L-O-E-W-E and I don’t care ’bout the amount / These b*tches into fashion mad ’cause I’m into fashion / Mad I got that sh*t on and they sh*t was in the past tense / Talkin’ ’bout you had that sh*t on in 2017, b*tch, it’s 2024 / And you ain’t got that sh*t no more, hoe / You ain’t got that sh*t no more, hoe / I’m that b*tch, I’m that b*tch, and you can’t stand it, ho.”

Last, on the project’s breakout single, “Okay,” fans caught the shade JT threw about Cardi B cracking her tooth on a hard bagel. Although JT altered the details (which lead to a dust up with Sukihana), the line was supposedly intended to whack Cardi:

“Maserati mami, and the roof missin / She ate crab legs, now her whole tooth missin’ / Cheap-ass veneers, you stay talkin’ sh*t / Put a marker to this b*tch, she’s so counterfeit.”

City Cinderella is out now via Quality Control. Find more information here.

People share the most beautiful thing someone’s done for them and it’s a balm for the soul

News headlines have always skewed negative—”If it bleeds, it leads” is a saying for a reason—but combine the news with a contentious election year and the polarization we so often find on social media and the world can feel rather disheartening.

What we focus on is what we see, however, and if we want to see the good in the world, that’s what we have to look at. Part of our mission here at Upworthy is to demonstrate that people are a force for good, and nowhere is that clearer than in the stories our audience shares with us.

We asked our readers, “What’s the most beautiful thing someone has done for you?” and the responses are a needed reminder of what’s wonderful about people. From random acts of kindness to anonymous altruism to family and community stepping up in the most inspiring ways, here are some examples of humans choosing kindness, thoughtfulness and selflessness to make one another’s lives a little better.

“My very attentive GYN doctor kept me much longer at an appointment than it should’ve been. She did not want me to leave the room, being I expressed the verbal and manipulative abuse I was getting from my husband. She gave me a counseling session that I have no words to describe how it helped me.”

“When I was going through cancer treatment, and too sick and tired from the chemotherapy to leave the house or be on my feet for very long, my boyfriend (now husband) would take me out and drive all day through various scenic places just so I could see things, feel the wind and smell the air with the windows down. It pulled me out of a very dark hole a few times and gave me the will to keep going!”

“My best friend took me in when my life was falling apart and encouraged me every day that I would survive. She fed me when I was too depressed to eat, she let me bring my cat ( and she was not a cat person) because she knew I needed him for comfort. My husband had cheated on me , my mom was dying and I made it through several months with her until I finally found the courage to stand up on my own again because of her constant faith in me . Her acts of kindness , compassion and love were gestures of beauty from her heart to mine ❤️”

“As a poor college student majoring in music, I sold my piano to pay tuition. My brother bought it back and gave it to me for Christmas that year. My daughter has that piano now.”

“My 12 step sponsor. We had never met the day I asked her to sponsor me. We met at her house every Monday for 15 months. She brought me through the 12 steps and helped me learn to love myself, to forgive others, to make amends for my harms done and to be in service. I’m 7 yrs sober and happier than I ever imagined I could be. ❤️” “I once saw a man who looked exactly like my ex partner who’d passed away. It was shocking but also felt so surreal like he was standing in front of me again. I was crying so much but I asked that random stranger for a hug after explaining why. We stood hugging for a long time. It felt like the hug I never got to have. It was so kind of him. 💔 “

“When I had cancer, a lot of friends got together, unbeknownst to me, and folded 1,000 paper cranes. They signed and put kind words side them. Then they gave them to me at a party. I was blown away. They are now hanging in my house as art.”

“Mentor me! I grew up in poverty in an unsavory environment. Throughout my life I was presented with wonderful mentors, in addition to the wonderful mother I have present in my life , who pushed me be the best version of myself in the world so that I didn’t have to be a statistic of my environment. Here I am, a happy and thriving man in life because of that attention.”

“Probably the elderly couple who took me in as a grandkid adoptee when I was experiencing a lot of chaos and neglect in my family. I spent weeks at their house during the Summer for years and years, starting around age 4. They cooked me good food and sewed me clothes. They had professional photos taken of me for their mantelpiece. I thought they were my actual Grandparents.”

“After deciding to leave an abusive marriage with my two small children in tow (ages 2 and 5), my best friend and some of her friends that I did not know packed my apartment, moved all our stuff, AND UNPACKED IT! We got to our new place and it looked like home. I will never forget this act of kindness. It was 18 years ago.”

“I had just had my son and had a tough day. My coworker and friend who lived over 4.5 hours away was on the phone with me and could hear I was struggling. This beautiful human offered to drive down here, through LA traffic,to help over the weekend so that I could take care of me. I didn’t take her up on it, but that sheer act of kindness has stuck with me and I tell the story often. My son will be 15 and in high school in a few months and the thought of her complete selfless offer still brings me to tears.”

“I had a panic attack outside a shopping centre, and 2 teenage girls saw me upset, came over and offered to get me water and gave me a big hug. Changed my day completely.”

“My husband, who stayed by my side through my sickness. He put aside his desire to become a father, because he chose *me* as a partner above all. Throughout my endometriosis journey, 3 surgeries, and the 5 IVFs we had he stood by my side and supported me. We were blessed enough to become parents after all, after 7 rough years, but he would have stayed with me even if that hadn’t happened. ❤️”

“When my 7-year old niece was dying, I was in charge of arranging my other siblings’ travel so we could all be with my niece (and my sister, her mom) to say goodbye. I was pregnant, distraught, and barely functioning. Any other time, searching up airfare and making travel arrangements would have been a snap, which is why I was assigned the job. My neighbor stopped by and found me sobbing on the floor. She calmly took over — called my all my family members, none of whom she knew, and arranged travel for strangers while I returned to the hospital. It seems small but when someone does a task for you when you are most in need, it’s gigantic. I will never forget the relief she brought me, and the time she gave me with my niece. Her kindness is inextricably linked to my grief, a bright light in all that darkness.”

“My SIL made a freezer full of meals (maybe 25+ meals, desserts and snacks) for me when I was pregnant with my second. I didn’t have to cook for probably 2 months after we brought our baby girl home 🥹”

“Snuck my puppy into the hospital to visit me. Like she went full on incognito mode and put my puppy in a crate, covered it with a blanket and wheeled him in my room. The nurses considered it good medicine and looked the other way. It was in fact good medicine. I was in that bed for 3 weeks. It was and still is one of the most beautiful and special things anyone has ever done for me.”

“My disabled son swims in the pool at the gym with a personal trainer. We pay ahead of time for half hour units. But for some reason his month is already paid for. Every month. I don’t know who does this but I’m so grateful.”

“I was struggling with depression and basic functioning during my divorce.. finances were unbelievably tight..my kids & I took a train to visit my parents and left house keys with a friend so they could feed cats. When we returned, our house was stocked with food in pantry and fridge, even frozen meals to thaw..pads and tampons in the bathroom.. and a new oven. We had been cooking out of a toaster oven for a year because ours was broken & old and I couldn’t afford a replacement. 🥹”

“When I left my abuser I had a four year old and a four month old. We left with two backpacks and a handful of special items. I was so terrified to start over. A friend of mine posted on Facebook asking for resources to help me furnish my new condo and the post blew up. Strangers from all over my city came and brought blankets, dishes, furniture and a beautiful crib for my daughter. There was not a single item that I needed to purchase on my own. All I could do is cry and thank them all for their kindness. I had nothing to give in return except sheer gratitude. Some drove to me to drop off items and share their stories of survival with me. I remember feeling so awful when I left, doubting if I could stay gone and if I’d be able rebuild my life, but I did. Those people helped me to stand on my feet and gave me hope to help me find my voice again.”

“I was bartending at a hotel in Bloomington Indiana where I went to College. I kept myself busy during the slow daytime hours, rug hooking, crafting a gift for my mother. A stranger traveling through town for business (Otis Elevators) sat at the bar for a beer after lunch. He asked what I was doing and I told him I was making a rug for my mother. Because my family is in St. Louis. He asked why I was still here since school was out. I told him I needed to make money so I stayed at this job. He asked if I go home often I said, not enough. It’s too expensive. We chatted for a while and I remember he was kind and ‘fatherly’ – not at all like the other men who had other things in mind.

The next evening when I came to work there was an envelope with my first name on it. Inside was a one-way ticket to St. Louis and a note that said, “go home and see your mom. “ I will never ever forget that man and how he made me feel. And yes, I went home for an extra hug from my mom. ❤️”

“When I was a kid in 9th grade, my teacher believed me when I told her I was being abused at home. She was the first adult to ever show concern. I think about Ms. Oliver every day. I just needed one person to help me.”

“I live in Sacramento and l many years ago I had my purse stolen which is completely devastating. This was before cell phones and the phone book with all of my friends numbers were in it. A few months after it happened a package came in the mail, the return address was just a general San Francisco Post Office address. Inside the package was a number of things from my purse including my driver’s license, my phone book, and some other things (some that weren’t mine). There was a note inside with some misspellings and grammar errors, that said something along the lines of, I was hitchhiking and found some things on the side of the highway that looked like they were important, so I scrounged some money to send them to you. I think there was a signature, but there wasn’t an address for me to send a thank you. This was a true act of selfless kindness, and I still appreciate it to this day.”

“I have a facial deformity and I was bullied through elementary and high school and a bit in college. People stare at me, even today, rather than speaking to me as if I am a human being. This history has given me extremely low self esteem. I am 60 years old, but, for this reason, I don’t leave my house unless I absolutely have to (I am fortunate enough to work from home). One day, I was walking through Walmart, looking down, as I usually do, because I don’t like people staring at me, and a man, who must have sensed my unease, walked up to me and told me I was beautiful and to hold my head up and walk proud. It brought tears to my eyes and this random man hugged me – like a ‘real’ strong hug that a person who cares would give. It made my MONTH! I have no idea who he was, but I will love him forever. You always remember the way people make you feel.”

Stray Kids Enlist ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Stars Ryan Reynolds And Hugh Jackman For The ‘Chk Chk Boom’ Video

The music video for Stray Kids‘ “Chk Chk Boom,” a track from the group’s new mini-album ATE, begins with Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine giving a weather report. But he angrily walks away from the broadcast after being interrupted by newscaster Ryan Reynolds, who has issues with the studio’s bathroom. From there, we get to the song itself, but I must ask an important question: is “Chk Chk Boom” part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Ryan Reynolds is playing “Ryan Reynolds,” not Deadpool, but Jackman is in the Wolverine suit from Deadpool & Wolverine, and he has the grumpy demeanor of ol’ Logan. Which means he’s “actually” Wolverine, right? So I say yes, welcome to the MCU, Stray Kids, especially since one of their songs is on the Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack (as is Zendaya).

You can watch the music video above, and stream ATE below.

“Chk Chk Boom” is one of eight songs on ATE, alongside “MOUNTAINS,” “JJAM,” “I Like It,” “Runners,” “twilight,” “Stray Kids,” and “Chk Chk Boom (Festival Ver).” The festival version will come in handy next month when Stray Kids headline Lollapalooza 2024 with Megan Thee Stallion, Future x Metro Boomin, and The Killers, among others. The Latest Update In The Taylor Swift Vs. Kim Kardashian Saga Involves A… Birthday Cake

We don’t need to recap the entire Taylor Swift vs. Kim Kardashian feud, right? It’s a lot. So, let’s just focus on what’s happened so far this year.

First, Swift released a new album with a song, “thanK you aIMee,” that appears to take shots at Kardashian. “All that time you were throwing punches, I was building something / And I can’t forgive the way you made me feel / Screamed ‘F*ck you, Aimee’ to the night sky, as the blood was gushin’ / But I can’t forget the way you made me heal,” she sings in the chorus. It was her “final word” on Kardashian, but Sabrina Carpenter addressed modeling for Kim K’s Skims after opening for Swift on The Eras Tour.

The latest update involves a Trump, because everything does these days. Ivanka Trump’s daughter recently celebrated her 13th birthday with a Swift-inspired cake. Specifically, the one seen in the “Blank Space” music video, complete with a bloody interior. “Best cake for my favorite Swiftie,” the daughter of the former president captioned one photo on Instagram, to which Kardashian replied, “Happy Birthday Arabella.” Feud over?

Not for the Swifties, who “trolled The Kardashians star in the comments” with references to “thanK you aIMee,” according to Page Six.

At least they’re not mad at another, more iconic Kim.

Cardi B Is Irate With Joe Budden And Makes Striking Allegations Against Him After He Criticized Her

New beef alert: Cardi B is not particularly pleased with Joe Budden right now.

Recently, Budden spoke about the long-awaited follow-up to Cardi’s 2018 album Invasion Of Privacy, saying, “We’ll never get another Cardi album again. I am standing on it. Cardi got something dropping with my man Rob[49], big Rob, on Friday. That’s going to be crazy, but that’s what Cardi’s about to be now: just a single artist.” He added, “I’m sure Offset wants Cardi to put out an album. Hey, fellas out there, boyfriends: y’all know that feeling, right? When you want your b*tch to get a job. You in the house, your b*tch just won’t leave.”

In an X Spaces broadcast yesterday (July 18), Cardi responded, saying (as Billboard notes), “Bro, I gave you a lap dance two times in Starlets. You was high as f*ck. High as f*ck on coke, n****. […] I don’t give a f*ck when people talk sh*t about me. It’s the fact you always talk sh*t about me, Joe Budden. Out of nowhere, you would think I did something to this n****. […] For the past two years, this n**** has only talked bad things about me.”

She later added, “You really want my album to come out so you can criticize it, ’cause every time I drop something, you don’t like it. Every single time a b*tch drops something and they doing mediocre, you say they doing better than me. […] What are you talking about? The sh*t is in motion. Merch is in motion, the box sets is in motion. You don’t know sh*t.”
