Big Thief’s Max Oleartchik Is No Longer In The Band And The Group Explained Why In A Statement

Big Thief 2023
Noah Lenker

A big change has just hit Big Thief: Max Oleartchik — a founding member of the group alongside Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek (other current member James Krivchenia replaced founding drummer Jason Burger in 2016) — is no longer in the band.

Big Thief revealed this news today (July 11) in a statement shared on social media, explaining that the change “was made for interpersonal reasons with mutual respect in our hearts” but not offering any specifics.

The post also notes, “Our love for each other is infinite, and we are so grateful for all we have shared these many years together since the beginning of our journey as a band. We wouldn’t be who we are without Max. This separation marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one for Big Thief.”

It’s not currently clear if the band has found a replacement for Oleartchik, or if they intend to continue without him as a three-piece at least on a temporary basis.

Find the full statement below.

“A message from Adrianne, Buck, James, and Max –

After many beautiful years together, Max is no longer in Big Thief. Our love for each other is infinite, and we are so grateful for all we have shared these many years together since the beginning of our journey as a band. We wouldn’t be who we are without Max. This separation marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one for Big Thief.

This change was made for interpersonal reasons with mutual respect in our hearts. It’s a big change for us and the four of us ask for your trust, respect, and care as we grow into the next chapter of our lives.

xo Big Thief.”

The Most Fun Teams To Watch At NBA Summer League

zach-edey-top
Getty Image

The NBA world has descended on Las Vegas, braving record-setting heat in the desert for the USA Basketball into Summer League double feature. With the best players in the world going desert to desert, flying from Vegas to Abu Dhabi to continue their pre-Olympics exhibition slate, the focus stateside is on the youngsters and those fighting for roster spots.

Summer League basketball is not good, in an objective sense, as games can feature more turnovers than points, a ridiculous amount of fouling, and at times have the feel of a mediocre pickup run. However, at their best, Summer League games can be incredibly fun, as the chaos of hurriedly thrown together teams blends with some truly incredible talent that gets a chance to shine and make their names in Vegas. Rosters for Summer League are always fluid, as guys get added and dropped pretty regularly, and you always have the Too Good For Summer League All-Stars who will play a game or two for the fans and then shut it down.

As such, you can’t just lock in on a team because of one big name, as you might find that by the end of the first weekend they’re on the bench in street clothes. Here, I wanted to highlight a few Summer League teams that I’ll be keeping an eye on in Vegas for entertainment purposes. This will be my 11th Summer League and I’ve found the key to the most fun teams is often a mixture of good NBA prospects, guards that can play, a vet or two trying to stick on a roster, and, ideally, a former college legend who may not have a big future in the NBA but can still cook at this level.

Cleveland Cavaliers

I’ve got two words for you: DJ Burns. That’s right, THEBIGFELLA will be in Las Vegas with the defending Summer League champion Cavs after becoming America’s basketball sweetheart during NC State’s run at the NCAA Tournament. He’ll be joined by Emoni Bates (who will shoot), first round pick Jaylon Tyson out of Cal, former lottery pick Zhaire Smith, and Craig Porter Jr. (who was genuinely very good for the Cavs last year). Still, the main attraction here is Burns, who’s trimmed down some and is looking to show his tremendous skill set that made a fan out of Nikola Jokic.

Utah Jazz

The Jazz roster is just an absolute parade of Guys. You have this year’s rookie class with Cody Williams, Isaiah Collier, and Kyle Filipowski. You have former college hoops legends like Max Abmas and Armando Bacot. You have established NBA guys in Keyonte George and Walker Kessler. And you have everyone’s favorite floorbound bucket-getter Kenneth Lofton Jr. I’d be surprised if George and Kessler play too deep into Vegas, but even when they don’t play the Jazz have a very fun roster.

Washington Wizards

Washington is headlined by the No. 2 overall pick Alex Sarr, but they have a ton of names that will be recognizable to fans of the Draft and the college game. Bub Carrington was also a favorite of many coming into this Draft and could be extremely fun at Summer League, and their third first round pick, Kyshawn George, will also factor heavily. Beyond the rookies, they have Markquis Nowell, Jared Butler, Johnny Davis, Justin Champagnie, and Patrick Baldwin Jr. all trying to prove they belong on a roster.

Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis has been in Utah warming up for Vegas, and Zach Edey has proven to be a serious problem for the often undersized Summer League competition. That figures to continue in Las Vegas, and GG Jackson could be one of the best players at Summer League coming off of his breakout year as a bright spot for the banged up Grizzlies a year ago. Add in Cam Spencer, who is a maniac (in a good way) on the court, and this Memphis squad is pretty fun.

Houston Rockets

The Rockets were the runners up last year and once again have some fun young names on the roster, most notably a backcourt that should let it fly from deep. No. 3 overall pick Reed Sheppard joins former first round picks Kira Lewis Jr. and AJ Griffin on the roster, while last year’s standout, Cam Whitmore, is back for another run in Vegas (albeit, it’s not clear if he’ll play the whole way). Even if Whitmore doesn’t play the entire tournament, this Houston team should look to rain in threes and that ought to make for some entertaining games.

Philadelphia 76ers

Another team that’s been out in Utah playing already, the Sixers are headlined by rookie Jared McCain who can absolutely light it up from three and should get plenty of reps as he figures to be in the regular season rotation this year in Philly. Add in Adem Bona, who is a very fun high energy big and you’ve got a good start. However, the Sixers also have one of the all-time Summer League Guys in RJ Hampton, who has been at it for years on the Vegas circuit and has one of the highest shot-per-minute rates of anyone I’ve ever seen at Summer League. I don’t know if that’s fun for everyone, but part of the charm of Summer League for me is guys deciding they are the star even when that is not the case — two years ago he was on the Magic and would at times ice out No. 1 pick Paolo Banchero. We love a good Summer League gunner. Also, the Sixers have Tony Bradley who got drafted in 2017 (!) and is still grinding to try and get on a roster. I respect the hell out of that.

When Will Eminem’s ‘The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)’ Be On Spotify?

Eminem probably felt more empowered to entitle an album The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) after being immortalized in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Whatever the reasoning, he’s fully leaning into killing off his antagonistic alter ego. Slim Shady is seen in a literal body bag in the album’s cover art, after all.

At any rate, anticipation for a fresh Eminem album is alive and well.

Eminem Has A Good Reason Why You Need To Listen To His New Album ‘The Death Of Slim Shady’ Front-To-Back

Eminem 2024 Michigan Central Station Opening Celebration

Eminem is still going strong: In 2020, his album Music To Be Murdered By went No. 1 and spawned the hit single “Godzilla.” Now, he’s a day away from releasing his 12th album, The Death Of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce). Before fans get their hands on it, though, Em has a message for them, about how he thinks the project should be heard.

On X (formerly Twitter) today (July 11), Eminem explained, “Public service announcement: the ‘death of slim shady’ is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense. Enjoy.”

This isn’t Eminem’s first go in the conceptual space, as 2009’s Relapse is often considered a concept album, about drug rehabilitation and falling short.

So far, we’ve heard “Houdini” and “Tobey” from the new album. On the latter, some thought Eminem was dissing Jay-Z with the lines, “Ain’t feelin’ your top five favorite rappers / So I know they ’bout to be pissed at me / But this, to me, is a mystery / How rappers I’ve already ripped could be / Higher up on a list than me.” However, Eminem associate Royce Da 5’9″ shut that idea down, saying “of course not” to the diss speculation.

In The Latest Episode Of ‘The Street I Grew Up On,’ Peytan Porter Takes Us On A Trip To Dawson County, Georgia

“A lot of great musicians have come from Georgia, there is just a spirit that the mountains have that isn’t everywhere else.”

On the latest episode of Uproxx Studios’ new show, The Street I Grew Up On, rising country star Peytan Porter takes us down to Georgia. Dawson County to be exact, the small town that helped shape her artistry, and the site of her most potent memories of trying to find her voice as an artist. With many modern country stars, there is an element to their artistry that can sometimes feel like small-town cosplay, but that isn’t the case with Porter; one quick stroll through her hometown makes it clear that she’s the real deal. A certified country girl.

That’s probably why her lyrics are so potent. When you see the street she grew up on, you can imagine the characters that inhabit her songs, like Barbara Sue from “Lemonade,” sitting on her front porch, all dressed up, hoping to catch a glance from the mailman. You can see Johnny, the son of a drunk Pentecostal preacher, yearning to escape his lot. And escape is something Porter thought she needed too.

“I really had to force my way out of this ball of expectations. I thought that it was saying goodbye to these people and this place forever. They are still welcoming me. They’re still loving me, I don’t think that I ever really knew that was an option. To have the best of both worlds.”

It’s clear that even though Porter left Dawson County for the big country stage, she’s still very much a part of the community, whether it’s through the memories of a neighbor whose late mother would sit on the porch and listen to Porter develop her voice, or through the halls of Dawson County high school, where her name still echoes.

To learn more about Peytan Porter’s hometown experience, watch the latest episode of The Street I Grew Up On above.

Jenna Ortega Found Help With The ‘Scary’ Side Of Fame From ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Co-Star Winona Ryder

When it comes to legendary actresses of the ’90s, Winona Ryder was the alternative goth icon that only comes once every generation to inspire young women to rebel against society. In the 2010s, we had Aubrey Plaza, and now, we have Jenna Ortega, who just so happens to be working with Ryder in Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

In the highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 horror/comedy, Ryder reprises her role of Lydia while Ortega portrays her stubborn daughter, Astrid. “Everyone wanted to be Lydia after watching the first film,” Ortega told Harper’s Bazaar. “She’s so self-assured and smart and ahead of her time.”

Ortega also revealed that Ryder took the young actress under her wing when they first met while Ortega was shooting Tim Burton’s Wednesday series. Ortega has been open about her struggles with fame after appearing in the hit Netflix series.

“She definitely helped me feel less alone,” Ortega began. Ryder was only a few years younger than Ortega was when she took on the first Beetlejuice film.

Ortega conitnued, “It’s a very isolating experience and a scary one. Being able to speak to somebody who had witnessed that firsthand, maybe even more, was a great source of comfort for me, and I can’t thank her enough for that.”

Even though they are friendly off-screen, their on-screen characters don’t see eye-to-eye. If only there was an overly-eager poltergeist on the way to help them test their rocky relationship!!!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hits theaters on September 6th.

Americans are known for being great salespeople. People have some theories about why.

Americans are known as some of the best salespeople in the world. The country has been the home of some of the most influential business communicators of all time, like Steve Jobs of Apple or filmmaker Walt Disney. America is also the birthplace of people who became legends for their ability to excite people with their incredible, audacious promotional skills, such as P.T. Barnum or Muhammad Ali.

There’s also a dark side to the uniquely American gift of gab. Americans have the reputation of being masters of BS. Hunter S. Thompson, a writer with a fondness for exaggeration, once referred to America as a “nation of 220 million used car salesmen.”

An X user named Alz, born in Hong Kong, was curious about why Americans are so great at sales, presenting ideas, and (less favorably) BS-ing than people in other countries. The tweet went viral, receiving over 1.4 million views. Nearly everyone agreed that Americans are the world’s best salespeople, but there were many different answers to why.

“Why are Americans, on average, so incredibly good at presenting/selling/ (you could uncharitably call it) BS-ing? Is it something about early/middle/high school education? Culture? Parents teaching their kids?” Alz asked.

“I troll, but this is an incredibly important skill, and for some reason observationally, America, which has an early education system few are generally jealous of, seems to systematically produce ppl with a much higher distribution of presentation ability than anywhere else,” Alz continued.

Some respondents believe Americans are great at sales because so many work in the service sector. Over the past 50 years, globalization has altered the labor landscape, with many jobs moving from manufacturing to the service sector. Thus, Americans have learned to place a significant value on those who can communicate one-on-one, such as people who work in hospitality, retail, or personal training.

Others believe Americans have the gift of gab because its education system highly values communication skills, which are favorable in the business world. However, some believe this emphasis comes at the expense of STEM skills, which are seen as more important in other countries.

Many people think Americans are great communicators because it’s crucial to be able to sell and persuade in a competitive, free-market capitalist system. If you aren’t able to sell the goods and services you provide and produce, then it doesn’t matter if you’re in business at all. Further, American business culture is also seen as more relationship-based than in other countries, where buying and selling is merely transactional.

It could be that it’s all part of a culture that values openness and confidence which bleeds over into other aspects of American life. Persuasion and sales come a lot more naturally to people who’ve been raised with zero fear of calling attention to themselves. Outside the business world, Americans are also seen as friendly in social situations and have no problem engaging in small talk with strangers. Americans’ extroverted nature can sometimes shock people who travel to the U.S. on vacation.

Or, it could be that Americans just have a ‘rizz that’s the envy of the world.

Jaylen Brown Is Convinced Nike Kept Him Off Team USA, Which Grant Hill Denies

Team USA got its first exhibition game under its belt on Wednesday night, beating a formidable Canada squad comfortably in Las Vegas. However, the discussion on Thursday wasn’t about the terrifying defense the Americans showed or how fun the Stephen Curry-LeBron James combo looks on the court together for the first time in a USA Basketball uniform. Instead, it was about the roster shakeup that took place when Kawhi Leonard pulled out of the Olympics with continued knee soreness and was replaced by Celtics guard Derrick White.

White joins teammates Jrue Holiday and Jayson Tatum on the roster, but conspicuously absent is Finals MVP Jaylen Brown, who has been vocal about his desire to be on the team and is not happy by his exclusion from the replacement spot. Grant Hill has looked to diffuse the situation by noting their task is to build the best team, and sometimes that means taking a great role player over a great star player to fill a need. In this case, that’s someone comfortable in shorter bursts playing off the ball as a shooter and doing the little things on both ends. White certainly fits the bill, but Brown would argue he’s capable of all of that as well.

The Celtics star wing has focused his frustration on sneaker giant Nike, who sponsors Team USA, believing they were the driving force in keeping him — an adidas athlete — off the roster in favor of a Nike player in White.

This follows in a long line of roster conspiracies on both the men’s and women’s side dating back to the Dream Team’s exclusion of Isiah Thomas. It’s also not the first time Nike has come up in one, as Candace Parker’s exclusion as an adidas athlete drew some murmurs it was partially about adding Nike athletes — although in that case more of the focus was on the UConn-Tennessee rivalry and Parker believing Geno Auriemma’s role with USA Basketball kept her off the team.

It’s not the first time Brown has taken aim at the Swoosh, as he did the same back when they dropped his friend Kyrie Irving.

Grant Hill addressed the controversy on Wednesday night, joking about being a longtime FILA athlete before again explaining the goal is to build the best team possible and considering fit.

That won’t satiate Brown, who will likely carry this frustration forward, and there won’t ever really be a way for USA Basketball or Nike to prove it wasn’t a factor. Tatum was also asked about it and clearly was trying not to upset anyone with his answer — it’s a particularly difficult spot when one of his teammates got added over another.

This year’s USA squad does feature a lot of Nike/Jordan athletes, but that’s also in part because they sponsor a majority of players in the NBA. LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Tyrese Haliburton, Bam Adebayo, and Derrick White all either have Nike/Jordan signatures or wear Nikes. But Stephen Curry (Under Armour/Curry Brand), Anthony Edwards (adidas), Joel Embiid (Skechers), and, before he was replaced, Kawhi Leonard (New Balance), all represent other sneaker companies.

If nothing else, Brown has found his motivation for next year coming off of a championship, but after seemingly putting to rest the questions of internal friction between Boston’s stars by winning a title, those will once again reappear thanks to USA Basketball.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’: Everything To Know About The Christian Bale-Starring ‘Frankenstein’ Movie

Christian Bale Thor Love and Thunder Premiere
Getty Image

When a movie has an exclamation point in it, it can mean one of two things: that movie will be a modern classic or a forgettable horror attempt and there is no in between. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s next directed feature will be called The Bride! based on the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein. And you have to say it with the emphasis every time!

The Bride! has been getting buzz thanks to its all-star cast and the fact that it’s Maggie Gyllenhaal’s second directed feature. Her debut, The Lost Daughter, was critically acclaimed and even snagged three Oscar nominations.

Here is everything you need to know to prepare yourself for The Bride! It all seems so exciting with the exclamation, right?

Plot

Much like your classic Frankenstein’s monster plot, the movie is set to follow the monster as he makes a female companion to act as his bride.

According to the official plot, the upcoming film “sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”

Cast

Doing his best not to appear as a Joker clone, Christian Bale will play the Frankenstein’s monster, though Gyllenhaal refers to him as “Frank.” It’s a common debate. Gyllenhaal shared the first image of Bale sporting some tattoos and a couple scars. Being dead is not very easy on the body.

Jessie Buckley, who starred in Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter, will play the titular Bride (!) complete with her icy white hair. “We are just about to start [filming],” Buckley told IndieWire in March. “I feel so grateful that I get to be part of a coin of extraordinary women who have so much to say, such brilliant minds, and such imagination. It is beyond my wildest dreams getting to go back and work with [Gyllenhaal] again. We really fell in love working on ‘The Lost Daughter.’”

It doesn’t stop there. Penelope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Juliana Hough and Annette Bening are also set to appear in the film.

Always one to keep the business in the family, Jake Gyllenhaal will also apppear in his sister’s film. He seemingly teased it while wearing a The Bride and Frank shirt while on SNL this year:

Release Date

Filming for the movie began in March of this year. Right now, The Bride! is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 26, 2025, though the release date has already changed, so it could shift around once more before the time comes.

Trailer

No trailer quite yet, but here are some behind the scenes shots shared from Gyllenhaal’s Instagram:
