‘Dexter: Resurrection’: Everything To Know So Far About Michael C. Hall’s Inexplicable Return As TV’s Favorite Serial Killer

Dexter New Blood Finale
Showtime

Michael C. Hall was recently revealed to be narrating Dexter: Original Sin. That news then took a turn with the added detail that Hall will also physically embody Dexter Morgan again in the upcoming sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection. How is this possible? As the title indicates, TV’s most enduring serial killer somehow survived being (fatally?) shot in the limited series finale of 2022’s Dexter: New Blood. At that time, questions swirled about whether there would possibly be a sequel spin off featuring Dexter’s son, Harrison, who happens to have been nurtured by not one but two serial killers. Yet Showtime decided to head back in time instead for a prequel series, and now, they are hopping slightly forward in time, too, with no mention of Harrison.

On the bright side — and this is basically tradition at this point — this show now has a chance to go for three gut-punch endings after the frustrating lumberjack detour and the semi-anticlimactic “death” of the killer of serial-killers. Can they do it? I do kid — even the worst finales are far preferable to having no Dexter at all, so let’s talk about what has materialized for this surprise (m*therf*cker) sequel, or rather, threequel series.

Plot

To call this sequel unlikely would be an understatement, especially after Dexter: New Blood‘s finale showed Dexter apparently being a goner at the hand of Harrison (he even showed Harrison where to shoot him), who is presumably in the wind now. This seemed to be the definitive end for Dexter’s own Code-dictated lifestyle in early 2022 when Showtime Entertainment chief Gary Levine issued a statement including the words “a profoundly powerful conclusion to our beloved and extraordinary series.”

Additionally, showrunner Clyde Phillips had insisted, “Dexter is dead.” Only, he’s not dead, so what’s the explanation for this miraculous survival?

A few weeks ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Hall cagily hinted to Variety, “I don’t know what I am authorized to say other than, it’s really cold out there.”

In other words, the frigid, snowy weather slowed Dexter’s blood enough to save his life because fiction, baby. With Netflix viewers consistently devouring the original series’ eight seasons (which ended in 2013) this year, Showtime obviously decided that an upcoming prequel series wasn’t enough. They’re gonna trot Dexter back out for more blood-slide action, and Hall seems pleased at this turn of events after previously thinking that sailing into a hurricane was all they wrote.

“It’s unbelievable,” he remarked. “There’s something about this world, something about this character that captivates people.” Why do viewers adore Dexter so much? Hall has a theory:

“I think there’s many different ways this show appeals to people as there are people who watch it. But I think maybe a biding thing is, in a world in which we feel a sense of being out of control people like spending time with a character who’s taking his own, unique control of his little corner of the world. I think we all have our shadow side that we contend with and Dexter’s is obviously a little weightier than most. People enjoy spending time with someone who is doing his best to take responsibility for that side in his sort of outside-the-box way and morally grey way … maybe contending with it in a way that is arguably admirable — even though he’s doing what he’s doing.”

In constructing Dexter: Resurrection, Showtime has planned for possible multiple seasons after the story resumes “right where we left off.”

Cast

Michael C. Hall is the only currently confirmed cast member, although it feels like Jennifer Carpenter could be back as Debra ghost again. We shall see.

Release Date

Even though this sequel series was only announced at SDCC, Showtime plans to roll out Dexter: Resurrection sometime in 2025.

Trailer

While we await further developments, I need to ask a question: were you aware that Michael C. Hall portrayed Broadway’s Cabaret Emcee in the late 1990s? Nobody can beat Alan Cumming, but Hall was still spectacular:

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Dusted The Field For Another World Record In The 400m Hurdles

sydney mclaughlin-levrone
NBC

While there have been a bunch of incredible finishes in the track and field events at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the 400m women’s hurdles was never expected to be one of them. That’s because the field was chasing Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, who has broken her own world record numerous times, and as long as she ran her race, she was the massive favorite to take home gold.

The biggest question was whether she would set a new world record, and that might require Dutch star Femke Bol to run one of her best races to push her. On Thursday night at Stade de France, we did not get a duel with Bol, but we did get a McLaughlin-Levrone world record as she dusted the field once again, setting a new world record with an astounding 50.37.

It’s truly incredible watching her run this race, because while everyone else is managing speed and struggling with the stamina required in one of the hardest races in track and field, she just seems to be cruising at all times. To put her dominance and speed in perspective, her time in the hurdles final would’ve qualified her for the Olympic final in the regular 400m — where people run without leaping over obstacles.

American Anna Cockrell stunned Bol with a silver medal finish, as the Dutch star just didn’t have the gas down the stretch, but the story was McLaughlin-Levrone continuing to compete with history and herself — and winning that battle along with gold medals.

Will There Be A Ted Lasso Season 4?

ted lasso
apple tv+

In 2020, Ted Lasso became the quiet, wholesome hit that everyone needed. Jason Sudeikis won a few awards, and suddenly everyone was into soccer (football??) and it was a whole thing! The next two season continued to follow Lasso as he managed the sports team while also dealing with his own internal problems and eating cookies (biscuits??).

Season three premiered last spring, and while it was never fully confirmed to be the final season, it sure felt like a farewell. The last episode was literally called “So Long, Farewell” so it seemed like that was it. But co-creator Bill Lawrence hasn’t given up yet.

In a new interview with Collider, Lawrence said that a fourth season isn’t fully off the table. “Groupthink sometimes happens, even without talking to each other, and every actor, actress, writer, producer on that show — and [we didn’t get] together and decide this was the message — we all loved the experience. As fans, we’d all kill if it was going again, but everybody would say the same thing, which is: whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it,” Lawrence said. “Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children.” Much like the plot of the show, huh?

If the show were to return,it would take some time and planning. Lawrence added, “It’s a big deal. So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m down for whatever he wants to do.” Even if there is no more Lasso, there are plenty of quirky characters who could get their own show. Maybe a nice Roy Kent travel show, just for fun.

Noah Lyles Ran The 200m With COVID And Got Taken Off The Track In A Wheelchair After Getting Bronze

noah lyles

Noah Lyles entered the Paris Olympics with one goal: Win a gold medal in the 100 and 200 meters. Lyles, the American sprinter who has endeared himself to fans thanks to his big personality, did the first half of that last week when he narrowly crossed the finish line ahead of Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson.

Considered the weaker of his two events, Lyles winning a gold in the 100 meant that winning the Olympic double was truly on. However, on Thursday evening at Stade de France, Lyles finished third in the 200 for the second straight Olympics, finishing behind teammate Kenny Bednarek and gold medal winner Letsile Tebogo of Botswana in a stunning result.

After the race, Lyles was clearly gassed and nearly fell to the track while calling for water. He was tended to by the medical staff and eventually taken off the track in a wheelchair to get further medical attention underneath. Lyles, who deals with asthma, had been wearing a mask prior to his 200m heats, and NBC’s Lewis Johnson spoke with his mother after the race and learned that Lyles had tested positive for COVID two days ago after his 100m win.

Lyles opted to continue running for the double, and it does explain why he didn’t look like he had his normal finishing kick — and that he could run a 19.7 while sick is quite impressive. Hopefully Lyles will make a full and speedy recovery, but it was a bit of a scary scene on the track when he was clearly struggling to catch his breath.

UPDATE: Lyles came back out and spoke with Johnson for an on-air interview and said he wasn’t sure how this would impact his availability for the relay teams, and that he’d leave that up to the Team USA staff.

We Tried Jack In The Box’s New Ridiculously-Named Sauced And Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs — Are They Any Good?

Jack in the Box's Loaded Mini Chimi Dish(1024x450)
Uproxx/Jack in the Box/Marvel

The Deadpool & Wolverine marketing blitz continues! Always Sunny In Philadelphia tie-ins, Frozen pizzas, sneakers, popcorn buckets — everywhere you turn it’s Deadpool & Wolverine. Now the duo is coming for our fast food! Jack in the Box has just launched the ridiculously named Sauced & Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs, a side order of chimichangas covered in cheese and loaded up with even more cheese because Deadpool is canonically a huge chimichanga nerd.

Which begs the question — how the hell did Taco Bell drop the ball on this one?

While this seems like a dish tailored made for T-Bell, it fits a bit better alongside Jack in the Box’s chaotic sides menu. This is a fast food chain that has tacos, egg rolls, teriyaki bowls, and stuffed jalapeños on the menu, so sauced and loaded chimichangas? Sure… why the hell not?

But is this a worthy side to add to your meal? We found out ordering the Sauced & Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs so that you don’t have to. Here is the verdict.

Jack in the Box Sauced & Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

The Sauced & Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs win the award for the most exhausting name for a fast food dish ever. Typing out its full name is giving me carpal tunnel, so I’ll be awaiting your check for damages in the mail, Jack! Anyway, the *deep breath* Sauced & Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs feature shredded chicken, corn, black beans, and cheddar cheese stuff in three mini-flour tortillas, deep-fried, and topped with cheddar cheese sauce, taco sauce, and lettuce.

Visually, this dish is an absolute mess. Despite all the cheese and sauce all over these things, the shell remains nice and crispy (and that’s after a 15-minute transit time from the drive-thru to my apartment) offering a nice crunch alongside salty cheese notes, earthy herbal tones, and a zesty aftertaste courtesy of the taco sauce.

It’s the same taco sauce used on JiB’s crunchy tacos, but in a much larger dose — really accentuating the mild chili notes.

Dane Rivera

The weakest aspects of this dish are the chicken, which is essentially flavorless, and the weird strands of lettuce tossed on top of this dish. But as weak as those elements are, they don’t really hurt the dish.

This (last time) Sauced and Loaded Mini Chimi Bang Bangs is tasty and a full order is easily crushable, especially after a few drinks or a few hits from your vape pen, which if you aren’t aware, is the essential way to enjoy Jack in the Box’s food. As much as I like these though, they feel a little inessential. They aren’t a reason to go to Jack in the Box, but they make a nice accompaniment to any order.

The Bottom Line:

If you love Jack in the Box’s crunchy tacos, this dish feels like an elevated take on that. Worth adding to your usual order.

‘Shōgun’ Season 2: Everything To Know So Far About FX’s Unexpected Continuation Of James Clavell’s Asian Saga

Shogun
FX

With The Bear, Fargo and Reservation Dogs all having their own respective moments, FX is slowly becoming the home of Post-Peak TV. That was only emphasized with the debut of Shōgun earlier this year, and now the network has been nominated for a whopping 93 Emmys, making it a worthy competitor for HBO and Netflix. And it’s partially because of… well, this.

A second season of Shōgun is already in the works, despite the fact that it was initially supposed to be a limited series. The show is based on the 1975 novel of the same name, which follows the English ship captain John Blackthorne as he becomes marooned in Japan in the midst of political turmoil, which stirs up even more tension. A second season was quickly green lit after, though the plot will depart from the original text.

“We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence,” husband and wife duo/prducers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo revealed to The Hollywood Reporter in March. “We love how the book ends; it was one of the reasons why we both knew we wanted to do it — and we ended in exactly that place.”

While there are five other books in the saga, season two will bring the story somewhere else. “We don’t have the novel,” producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada revealed to Variety. “Freedom is there…I hope our writers will enjoy the freedom and respect the novel of course.” Even without a source text, the season will surely be a worthwhile adventure for fans of the series. Here is everything to know so far about season two of Shōgun.

Plot

Even without a book to adapt, Sanada (who is set to reprise his role of Lord Yoshii Toranaga in season two) says that there is no shortage of events to draw inspiration from. “There are so many famous episodes in Japan. Toranaga’s strategies are like a chess game. It’s not only about fighting. Human drama is important,” he said. Season one is set at the end of the tumultuous Sengoku period, which in turn leads to the Edo period.

The second season promised to bring in new characters, in addition to some familiar faces, that will lead into another (!!) season. “There will be new characters coming in, and we’re going to basically follow the real history in seasons two and three. Before the peaceful era came, there were a lot of dramatic moments,” Sanada said.

Cast

Sanada cryptically revealed that half the existing cast will be back, and “the other half will be new characters coming in.” Sanada will definitely be returning as Toranaga, though none of the other cast has confirmed to return at this time.

Sanada previously told USA Today, “Blackthorne is useful to Toranaga, who wants to keep him in Japan and not let him go back to England,” which could signify the return of Cosmo Jarvis.

Release Date

The writers are hard at work on season two, which is still in the early stages. Sanada revealed, “We have a writers room, and they’re working every day. Hopefully sometime next year, we can start shooting.” Filming for season one took about nine months from 2021-2022, so there we are still quite a ways away from a premiere. Assuming they use a similar schedule, season two likely won’t premiere until late 2025 or early 2026.

“It’s a long production period.” FX CEO John Landgraf told Variety in July. “I think between principal and second unit days of photography, that show shot between 180 and 190 days or more, could have been close to 200.”

Trailer

While there is no trailer or footage, the entire first season is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+ so you can get a feel for where the series is headed next. Check out the first season trailer below:
