There’s A Perfectly Acceptable Reason Why Eva Mendes Wasn’t With Ryan Gosling At The Oscars

Place Beyond the Pines
Focus Features

Ryan Gosling was one of the inarguable peaks of this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. He didn’t win an Oscar (that one went to RDJ), but he did bust out a spirited, super-sized, star-studded rendition of “I’m Just Ken” — a strong contender for the best musical performance in the show’s history. Some people did notice a big part of his life was missing, though: Eva Mendes, his longtime partner, with whom he has two children. Predictably, there’s a perfectly understandable reason for her absence.

Per People, a source says she simply decided to stay home to look after their kids. “They try their best to stay out of the spotlight,” the source said of the two. “For them, the most important job is their girls. Everything else comes second.” They added, “Of course Eva is proud and excited for Ryan. She still sees it as a job though.”

The source also said, “It seems like a healthy way of living. They’re amazing as a couple and very happy together.”

Another source echoed those sentiments, saying that Mendes is simply “not into” playing the celebrity game these days. “She’s moved past that part of her life for now — the glam and the red carpet and the photographers,” the source said. “It’s just not important to her. She knows that it’s part of Ryan’s job but it’s not part of hers at the moment. She’s content doing her thing with her family.”

On Sunday, Mendes showed her support with an Instagram post, in which she shared a video of her standing outside his dressing room. In the caption she wrote, “Always by my man.”

Mendes and Gosling met on the set of the 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines, which costarred another 2024 Oscar nominee, Bradley Cooper. Though not officially retired, Mendes hasn’t acted in a film since 2014’s Lost River, directed by Gosling, and she hasn’t been on TV since a voice role in a 2021 episode of Bluey. In 2022, she admitted she’s in no hurry to return to the screen, saying, “I don’t really miss it.”

Here’s Where Can You Stream The 2024 Oscar-Winning Movies

Poor Things Emma Stone
Searchlight Pictures

Most people like to check out all of the Oscar contenders before the big day, but the real cinema lovers wait until all the hype has died down to dive in. Yeah, it’s pretty important to see each movie and come to your own conclusion during awards season, but then you are left disappointed and hurt when your favorite doesn’t win and therefore you wasted a perfectly good Sunday. Why not just wait a few months or years or even longer before throwing your opinions into the mix? There’s already enough opinions out there anyway!

If you want to check out this year’s biggest Oscar winners, here’s where you can stream them. But be warned, if you watch them, people are going to want to talk about them with you. Watch at your own risk.

Oppenheimer

For an award-winning performance from Cillian Murphy (besides Red Eye), you can head to Peacock for Oppenheimer. The streamer has made watching the film practically unavoidable, and every time you log on you are bobared with ads for the film, but there are also several bonus features available on the site that make it worth the long runtime.

Poor Things

To watch Emma Stone’s Oscar-worthy performance in Poor Things, you will have to head over to Hulu+, or you can rent or buy the film on Prime Video or Apple TV. You can also check local showtimes to see if the film is still playing in your area.

Barbie

Best Original Song winner Barbie is over on Max, Hulu, and Prime Video, or you can rent the film on Apple TV and Prime. Even though Barbie did not receive the accolades it deserves, we will always have Ken.

Maestro

Bradley Cooper and his conducting skills in Maestro can be seen on Netflix. Though the film was shut out from winning any awards, it also features a lovely performance from Carey Mulligan. Netflix is home to a number of other Oscar-nominated films like Ruston, Nyad, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, and Nimona.

Anatomy of a Fall

To watch Messi’s breathtaking performance in Anatomy of a Fall, you’ll have to purchase or rent the movie on Apple TV or Prime. No streaming date has been announced at this time.

The Holdovers

Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s award-winning performance in The Holdovers can be streamed on Peacock, or purchased on Apple TV or Amazon Prime.

American Fiction

Best Adapted Screenplay winner American Fiction is currently available to stream on Prime with the MGM+ add-on, or purchase through Prime Video or Apple TV. The film can also still be seen in select theaters.

Killers of the Flower Moon

As for Killers of the Flower Moon, which unfortunately went home empty-handed, you can stream Martin Scorsese’s epic western on Apple TV+. Or you can watch all of Francesca Scorsese’s TikToks.

The Zone Of Interest

Zone of Interest is currently only available to rent on AppleTV and Prime Video, though it will likely land on Max later this year.

Past Lives

Celine Song’s film can be streamed for free with a library card (!!!) on Kanopy, or it can be purchased or rented on AppleTV or Prime Video.

Awesome chart shows you how far you can drive on empty

There are two types of people in this world – those who panic and fill up their cars with gas when the needle hits 25% or so, and people like me who wait until the gas light comes on, then check the odometer so you can drive the entire 30 miles to absolute empty before coasting into a gas station on fumes.

I mean…it’s not empty until it’s empty, right?

But just how far can you drive your car once that gas light comes on? Should you trust your manual?

Now, thanks to Your Mechanic sharing this information in a recent post, you can know for sure. Of course, they also want to warn you that driving on a low fuel level or running out of gas can actually damage your car.

Proceed at your own risk.

fuel efficiency, cars, science, gasoline, gas

Here’s a link to a larger version of the chart.

These are, of course, approximations that depend on several factors, including how you drive, your car’s condition, etc. So don’t automatically blame Your Mechanic if you find yourself stranded on the side of the road.

Will Jodie Foster Return For ‘True Detective’ Season 5?

True Detective
HBO

Jodie Foster was in movie mode last night at the Oscars, but of course Variety could not give up an opportunity to ask the actress for even just a drop of info regarding True Detective: Night Country. Even though she probably just defrosted herself from those frigid temps.

The Oscar-winning actress starred in season four of the anthology series, which followed Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives taking on one chilling case in Alaska (really it was Iceland, but it does look similar). While the series has been renewed for a fifth season, Foster says that she’s not involved.

The actress told Variety that season four was a “one and done” situation for her, and emphasized that the show is an anthology, meaning that there will be a whole new group of characters. When asked directly if she was coming back, she said “No.” There is no ambiguity there.

Foster also made it clear that she didn’t see any of the hate from Nic Pizzolatto because she’s not on social media. The series’ creator was initially on board with the series before handing the reigns over to Issa Lopez, only to criticize the season on Instagram. Being not online can be very useful sometimes!

As for season five, Lopez will return to run the show, but no casting announcements have been made. Hopefully, they will go somewhere warmer.

This Old Fashioned Recipe From Our Austin Takeover Will Leave You Ready For A Summer Spent Outdoors

Mash & Mallow Cocktail
Rabbit Hole/UPROXX

With SXSW in ful swing, it’s almost time for UPROXX’s Takeover at the Summit Rooftop & Lounge in Austin (tickets here). There’s going to be amazing shows — music and comedy — and amazing drinks. We’ve partnered with Rabbit Hole out in Louisville to bring the crowds at SXSW great whiskey pours and cocktails this year. One of the signature cocktails that we’ll be pouring is a S’mores take on the old fashioned.

S’mores are the ultimate backyard firepit treat, so it’s the perfect time to infuse that vibe into a great whiskey cocktail. For this drink, we’re using Rabbit Hole’s key flavored whiskey, Mash & Mallow. While flavored whiskeys can be tricky (that’s a nice way of saying “bad”), Rabbit Hole has perfected the style. Their Mash & Mallow pulls off the flavor profile by offering a drink that actually tastes like real S’mores — all the way down to the brown butteriness in the Graham Cracker on the nose and a whisper of firepit smoke on the finish.

In short, it’s pretty delicious.

If you can’t make it to this week’s UPROXX Takeover in Austin, then follow the recipe below to make this nostalgic elixir at home. It’ll be a pour of summer backyard festivities in a glass. Let’s dive in!

Cinnamon Maple Old Fashioned

Mash and Mallow Cocktail
Rabbit Hole

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Mash & Mallow Whiskey
  • 0.25 oz. maple syrup
  • 2 dashes of Cinnamon Bitters
  • 1 dash of Angostura Bitters
  • Orange peel
  • Ice

The key ingredient is the Mash & Mallow. You can easily buy it online here. It’s $30 and worth every penny. That’s especially true if you’re already a s’mores fan. The rest is easily available at any good liquor store, even the Cinnamon Bitters.

What You’ll Need:

  • Rocks glass (prechilled)
  • Cocktail mixing glass
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Barspoon
  • Jigger
  • Paring knife
Mash and Mallow Cocktail
Zach Johnston

Method:

  • Add the whiskey, syrup, and bitters to the mixing glass, add a large handful of ice, and then stir until the glass is ice cold — about 15 to 20 seconds.
  • Fetch the rocks glass and add a large ice cube. Strain the cocktail into the glass.
  • Express the oils from the orange peel over the glass and drop in. Serve.

Bottom Line:

Mash and Mallow Cocktail
Zach Johnston

This sounds like a fall cocktail on paper. I get it “cinnamon maple” is very coded for that season. This is not that. The s’mores aspect places this right in the summertime flavor-wise. The drink is lush and sweet with a nice touch of earthy maple and sharp cinnamon that elevates the s’mores vibe to something richer.

That all said, this is very much a dessert cocktail. It’s sweet and silky with a vibe that’s all about that singed marshmallow, chocolate, and spice — all very dessert-forward. So if you’re looking for a sweet and spicy cocktail, this is a great play.

Tickets for the Open House and Soul In The Horn takeover are on sale now, with proceeds for the event going directly to charity.

Whoopi Goldberg Wants Everyone To Leave Kate Middleton Alone Over That Janky Photoshop

Whoopi Goldberg rushed to Kate Middleton‘s defense after the Princess of Wales got caught up in even more conspiracy theories surrounding her seemingly suspicious absence from the public eye.

On Sunday, Kensington Palace released a Mother’s Day photo of Middleton that triggered a kill notice after several news agencies spotted several signs that the photo was digitally manipulated. The photo was pulled from publication, but it was too late. The damage was done. Social media sleuths pored over the image, which showed sloppy signs of photo editing. Needless to say, that only further fueled unfounded theories that Middleton is divorcing Prince William or in a far worse medical state than the royal family is disclosing.

However, in a bizarre twist, Middleton came forward and took responsibility for the doctored photo. Or at least a tweet from the royal couple’s official account claimed she did. Pretty suspicious, right? Not if you ask Goldberg.

While Monday morning’s episode of The View tackled the latest development in the ongoing #WhereIsKate mystery, Whoopi wrote the whole thing off as much ado about nothing.

“I’m sorry, I know very few people who don’t manipulate their own photos. I mean all your gotta do is swipe. Those editors swipe, God knows people look how those photos look,” Goldberg said via Page Six. “You know what, I have to tell you, she may be the future queen, she’s still an amateur photographer. That’s what they do!”

Alyssa Farah Griffin brought up the online conspiracies and how the photo just added more fuel to the fire. She then suggested that Middleton release a selfie video to put the matter to rest, but Whoopi wasn’t having that either.

“She doesn’t need to do it! She doesn’t need to do it!” Goldberg said before saying that photo editing has been a longtime practice for magazine covers and celebrity Instagrams for years.

Look, Walton Goggins Is As Eager For ‘Justified: City Primeval’ Season 2 As The FX Show’s Audience

Justified City Primeval Boyd Crowder
FX

Walton Goggins is a busy guy. Timothy Olyphant? Same. The former will soon enter HBO’s The White Lotus, and the latter will soon hit FX’s Alien TV series. Still, the world awaits news of the pair reuniting as fellow coal diggers Boyd Crowder and Raylan Givens in a second season of Justified: City Primeval.

Will this happen for real and when? Goggins has been promoting The Uninvited at SXSW (like we said, he’s a busy dude), and Screenrant asked him whether there would be official news on Boyd’s adventures after escaping prison, and The Righteous Gemstones star revealed what he’s thinking about timing:

“Always. I think everybody – all the players involved – want another lap. I didn’t anticipate that, and it took a while to kind of jump back into that. But once we did it, we kind of kept it from everybody. I had such a good time, and I think Tim was inspired. And there is more to say, actually. I didn’t think there was, but there is. Everything is in line. I think everybody’s just waiting for schedules and FX to say, ‘Go.’ We’ll see. We’ll see what happens.”

Well, that’s the official word from Team Goggins, but it must be noted that he is also very good at following directives to not let anything slip that could possibly spoil surprises for his audience. And since — let’s be honest — everyone involved would want to see Boyd and Raylan doing cat-and-mouse in, like, Brazil, the only thing we can do is hang tight and see what rolls forth. Heck, maybe Raylan Givens is still staring at his phone from that boat, and it could very well still be ringing. By the way, it’s probably Rachel Brooks (Erica Tazel) on the phone, right? Telling him to get his cowboy hat-wearing butt in gear. Please. Make that happen.

This son sent his mom a life-size cutout of himself. She got the last laugh.

To help them cope, the 22-year-old Tennessee native did what any selfless college student would do…

“I thought maybe they’d put it in the living room corner until I got back to remember I exist,” he explained about the cutout, which came with a short note: “You’re welcome.”

But like any clever mom, Susan Talley couldn’t just stash this amazing piece of work away when it arrived about two months ago.

No, no — she had better plans in mind.

Talley decided the cardboard version of her son could be a great companion “while the real one is in Europe.” So she brought him along with her to events, like basketball games …

“The attention is crazy,” Ross told Upworthy, noting the story has gained so much traction that a restaurant featured in one of the photos, O’Charley’s, sent the family a gift card.

“I hope my mom’s holding up all right,” he said. “It’s awesome though.”
