The Atlanta Bass R&B revolution has begun! Fortunately, the ones kicking it off are a K-pop group, NewJeans, and they’ve already got a strong record of adapting the formulas of hyperspecific R&B subgenres and eras to their perky approach. On their new song, “How Sweet,” they employ the skittering laser-gun-laden sounds of groups like Ghost Town DJ’s and INOJ, updating them with pristine contemporary production and songwriting.
In previous singles like “Bubble Gum” and their inescapable breakout hit “Super Shy,” the quintet has smartly updated millennial R&B sensibilities to engage listeners informed by 2000s nostalgia. They’ve also wisely skipped around the straight-up radio hits of yesterday to ensure that their sound doesn’t get stale or come off as disingenuous, even though most of those hits came from before the group’s members were even born. There’s clearly a lot of appeal in their approach; the group was the fastest K-pop act to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and their previous single “Get Up,” even reached the top spot.
The video for “How Sweet” even uses some of the most familiar tropes of the era, like the wet stage and baggy clothes (they wouldn’t be out of place in TLC’s “Creep” video or other late-stage newjack swing visuals).

A party during the Cannes Film Festival was reportedly interrupted by a brawl involving rappers Travis Scott and Tyga as their crews exchanged blows during the event. The melee was confirmed by TMZ after grainy, dark video of the fight emerged online (those darn iPhones, am I right?) alleging that Travis and Tyga were directly involved speculated that they were scrapping over their mutual ex, Kylie Jenner.
According to TMZ, Alexander Edwards — a music executive at Universal who also moonlights as a rapper under the name “AE” and has been dating Cher (yes, that Cher) since 2022 — shouted out the rappers on the DJ’s mic. Travis reportedly snatched the mic from AE and exchanged some heated words with him. After initially leaving the stage, Travis returned with producer Southside, and AE and Southside exchanged blows. At this point, AE and Tyga’s assistants also jumped in, trading blows with Travis. Security eventually broke things up, and Travis and Southside both departed, with AE and Tyga remaining behind and staying until the wee hours of the morning.
One fight Travis Scott won’t have to worry about for the immediate future is the legal one stemming from the wrongful death lawsuits filed against him in the wake of the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragedy. All ten cases have been settled, leaving him with just two hundred or so injury suits set to be argued as one case starting in October.
Hot water bottle in hand, I snuggle up to the frosted window and open my eyes to a sublime view of Peru’s Andean countryside. The rugged peaks of the Andes, the sacred “Apu,” stand out across this vast emerald valley. Alpaca graze the slope behind my cabin. I sit and listen to their soft humming sounds until an eruption of giggles breaks the silence. The children have woken up and they’re playing with the herding dog, their weather-reddened cheeks puffy with smiles.
How lucky am I to be waking up in this magical place — the remote village of Chaullacocha, Peru.
***
Like many good travel stories, I have a serendipitous encounter with a taxi driver to thank for starting my time in Chaullacocha. I was seeking a guide to show me beyond the popular Cusco itinerary highlights (Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, etc.), so he brought me by a tour office, they made a few calls, and voila — I got connected with Domingo of Kallpa Travel. Over coffee and cheesecake the next day, Domingo spoke about his unique off-the-grid astrophotography tours, homestays, and glamping treks, and it felt like the stars had aligned!
EN ROUTE TO CHAULLACOCHA
Melanie Gordon
With Domingo’s promise of seeing the “real Peru,” we headed towards the home of Augustín: a father, alpaca farmer, and leader of the rural Chaullacocha community about 3 hours east of the Sacred Valley. From the passenger seat, my eyes traced swirls of ancient mountain footpaths and scores of purple flowering potato plants. The landscape here tells a story of millennia-old traditions; agriculture and herding as a way of life.
Remember, life in the Peruvian Andes has persisted relatively the same since well before the Inca Empire.
Melanie Gordon
As you can imagine, it was cold. The further we drove into the Andes, the more layers I added. First a beanie, then a sweater, then a jacket — all clothes I scored second-hand just in time for this trip. After a while, everyone we passed wore traditional Andean clothing: women in colorful pollera skirts and ornate montera hats, and men in beige trousers with red-tasseled caps on their heads. These are Quechua people, the largest indigenous group in Peru.
Of course, there were also Quechua people — mostly young men — in jeans and t-shirts. Though western style is more popular these days, the bright traditional clothing was the norm for over 1,000 years. Domingo (who is also Quechua) explained to me that this colorful, seemingly cumbersome garb keeps people visible to one another in the mountains while also bringing joy amidst the challenges of high Andean living.
WELCOME HOMESTAY
Kallpa Travel
We ditched the car at a pass with a sign marking the elevation at 15,000ft and headed off on foot, weaving around alpaca and llamas (and their droppings) toward the homestead. The mountain terrain felt unfamiliar to me. Bouncy and full of craters like the surface of the moon. And so green. Every few steps Domingo crouched over the earth, adjusting the micro-lens of his smartphone to capture the “pequeños universos” of the flowers.
The delicate dimension and sacred patterns of perfect nature; revealed only to those who care enough to see.
Melanie Gordon
Homestay tourism in Chaullacocha slowed after 2020, so it had been a while since the families had seen anyone who looks like me. Domingo warned me they might be a little shy. But when we reached the wooden gate, four joyous ladies in beautiful Andean dress draped me in a pink strewn flower necklace, warmly welcoming me to their village for the night. Their skirts swished back and forth as they led me to my cabin on the hill behind the main house.
All the rooms — a kitchen, small bathroom, and four guest cabins for homestay-ers like me — are made of adobe and stone. I was glad to find the essentials when I got in my room… A big bed, lots of blankets, and a light. But the electricity happened to be out. Of course, my reasons for doing this homestay didn’t include amenities and comfort. So I made an intention to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and be grateful for the opportunity to connect with people who know a life far different than I do.
And that is why we travel… isn’t it?
BREAKING BREAD
Melanie Gordon
I consider myself fairly well-traveled, but I did not expect to eat the most divine ceviche of my life at 15k feet. It was buttery soft and perfectly acidic, topped with toasted tricolor maiz and a couple of sweet potato slices. There I sat at the long wooden table in the dining room, scraping the inside of the little ceramic bowl to get the last morsels of what might be the only Andean ceviche I’ll ever eat.
Melanie Gordon
The eldest sons brought in more food and the rest of the families joined. We grazed elbows; sipping soup and passing silver platters of rice, chicken skewers, and potatoes five ways, ooh-ing and ahh-ing over a peeled tomato rose on one dish and a radish mouse on the other. Even breakfast the next morning was creative – a star-shaped frittata. Augustín played a few songs on the charango (Peruvian guitar) as we digested our feast.
For years he worked as a chef on the Inca Trail, hauling gear and cooking three meals a day for groups trekking to Machu Picchu. With homestays, men like Augustín can serve food from their own land (or lake), help the women weavers sell their goods, and share Quechua traditions with people from all over the world. Homestays help sustain their ancient way of life, which is especially important as younger generations drift away from their roots in hopes of economic gain.
THE WOMEN OF CHAULLACOCHA
Kallpa Travel
The Weavers
Kallpa Travel
After lunch the women weavers of Chaullacocha gathered on the lawn to showcase their artistry. Weaving alpaca and llama fibers is a skill passed down through generations in high Andean communities. At around eight years old, girls will begin spinning fur into yarn while walking the mountains and valleys with their mothers and aunties. It becomes so second nature, they don’t have to think about what they’re doing. They achieve a flow state with their craft.
Melanie Gordon
Peruvian weaving has garnered admirers from around the world for its intricate designs and vibrant colors. I was stoked to buy some one-of-a-kind gifts for my family and learn about the symbolism of the animal patterns and various color threads. Purchasing directly from the hands of the women rather than at urban markets felt good; proceeds go directly to those who truly deserve it.
The fathers and children were performing traditional dance on the slope in front, of course, I joined in. Laughter filled the air as we spun and I tried to follow their steps, bridging cultural gaps through the universal language of dance.
Cuy Breeding
Melanie Gordon
We then visited the home of a matriarch who breeds guinea pigs — yes, guinea pigs! They’re an Andean delicacy called “cuy”, and I ate them a couple times while in Peru. Among the Andean nations, Peru boasts the largest population of 35 million guinea pigs. It’s common for each village to have a cuy breeder, and in Chaullacoha, we were looking at her, Lucia. She sleeps above the few dozen guinea pigs on a bed made of wood, natural fibers, and woven blankets. Fascinated by this, I bought one of her stunning fine woven table runners to take home.
I was intrigued to learn from Lucia that guinea pigs are used in traditional healing to treat human illness. The rodent is passed around an individual to absorb disease. Interestingly, the guinea pig often dies after the healing. Before we departed Lucia’s home, the little girl who’s been tracing our footsteps captured a baby guinea pig and placed it in my arms.
The little girl lives just down the road, so we head that way to meet her mother, Benedicta, who has engineered a remarkable rainbow trout farm using a PVC pipe system. I was mind blown. This is the rainbow trout in the ceviche! Benedicta set up plastic tubes to funnel trout from the stream behind her house into hand dug pools. Quechua people work with nature, not against it.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I could no longer deny the lingering thought in the back of my mind, these people – -this way of life — it’s nothing short of a miracle. It’s brutal and trying but beautiful, and has managed to stand the test of time.
Melanie Gordon
I asked Domingo how aware the families are of the state of the world: the wars, expansion of globalism, and virtual reality… He said they hear about these things — they know they exist — but the concepts don’t preoccupy their thoughts. The people of Chaullacocha live a life that most people in modern society don’t understand: simple, in communion with the natural world, living closely with their lineage, and in support of their neighbors.
Surrounded by expansive mountainous terrain, I caught a glimpse of the humble yet resilient lifestyle of Peru’s high Andean communities, witnessing traditions and heritage that can serve to teach the collective about returning to our roots. Children of the earth and siblings to one another, the mountains, stars, and sky. It was unique to any other travel experience I’ve ever had. And that’s what made it so sacred.
The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a fascinating offseason, as the team is in the market for a new coach on the heels of a 47-win season and a first-round loss to the Denver Nuggets. LeBron James isn’t getting any younger, and the team has real stuff it can play with in the trade market in an effort to upgrade the roster.
Through all of this, Anthony Davis is coming off of one of his best seasons as a professional, both in terms of performance (he earned All-NBA Second Team honors) and availability (he appeared in 76 games, the most in his career). For the uncertainty surrounding the team in its efforts to get back to a championship level, Davis is a constant. Perhaps that is why, in a new interview with Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Rich Paul stressed that Davis, not James, is the Klutch client the Lakers should focus on as it builds its team. Haynes asked about James’ involvement in the team’s current coaching search due to J.J. Redick’s candidacy, and after expressing that James is not involved, Paul slid in his belief that Davis should be the team’s centerpiece right now.
Via Bleacher Report:
But as for the coaching search, this is a Lakers’ decision. I always advise LeBron or anybody for that matter not to really position yourself in a manner of which you have a hand so strong in a decision that could come back to bite you down the road. With every team he’s been on as the best player, you have some type of insight or the team may ask about your thoughts.
That goes for every superstar. In my opinion, the Lakers focus should probably be more so on Anthony Davis than LeBron at this point. I think for him being so good for so long, people just think he controls the team. There’s no controlling of the team.
It makes sense on the surface — Davis is younger and under contract until at least 2027, while James keeps dropping hints about his time in the NBA coming to an end sometime soon. Still, James has been the focal point of every team he’s been on from the day he stepped into the NBA, and it’s quite the sea change for his agent and longtime friend to explicitly say that his team’s focus should be on someone else.

Have your stress levels still not recovered from the guest star-filled “Fishes” episode of The Bear? Then maybe don’t watch the teaser trailer for season 3, which finds Carmy (played by Jeremy Allen White), Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) doing what they do best: cooking and yelling.
“You feel good?” Sydney asks Carmy while they’re prepping in the kitchen. “We’ll see,” he replies. Later, Richie yells about “getting drilled out there.” Sounds like someone needs to relax with some Taylor Swift.
You can watch the teaser above.
The Bear season 3 follows Carmy, Sydney, and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they attempt to “elevate The Bear, their beef stand turned fine dining establishment, to the highest level, all while doing their best just to stay in business,” according to the FX synopsis. Surely opening a resturant is easy and no anxiety-spiking issues will arise, right? Right…?
Here’s more:
It’s a losing battle every single day in the restaurant business. Carmy pushes himself harder than ever, and demands excellence from his crew, who do their best to match his intensity.
All 10 episodes of season 3 of The Bear, which also stars Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Matty Matheson, Oliver Platt, and Molly Gordon, premiere on FX on Hulu on June 27.
What exactly does “BBL Drizzy” mean, and why is this song everywhere?
“BBL Drizzy” is the name of an instrumental beat created by St. Louis producer, Metro Boomin, as a response to Drake exhorting the beatmaker to “shut up and make some drums” on his Kendrick Lamar diss track, “Push Ups.”
That’s exactly what Metro did, crafting a beat from an interpolation of an AI-generated song. But you knew all that; what you really want to know is WHY. So, strap in, folks. We’re going for a RIDE.
First of all, we have to explain: What, or who, is “Drizzy?” I’m starting here because it’s the easiest part to explain. Drizzy is a nickname for Drake. If you don’t know who Drake is… I mean, come on. You know who Drake is.
Secondly, we have to contend with just what the heck “BBL” means. I’m sorry to be the one to inform you, but “BBL” stands for “Brazilian Butt Lift,” a cosmetic surgical procedure also known as lipoinjection or autologous fat transfer (fun fact, it was actually invented by a Venezuelan guy! Those dang Americans and their poor geography skills!). Basically, the surgeon sucks the fat from somewhere else on the body, e.g., the stomach, and injects it into the buttocks. It’s a popular procedure among so-called “IG baddies,” who would be “video vixens” in millennial-speak.
Okay, so, we now know what a BBL is, and who Drizzy is, but why “BBL Drizzy?” Well, because of long-circulating, unconfirmed rumors that Drake got liposuction done to give himself an enviable six-pack of abs. The reason that surgery is being turned into a completely different one is because, well, it’s funnier that way, and the whole point of the song is to make fun of Drake.
Drop a response or tell the kids you don’t respond #bbldrizzy
The original song was prompted by a comedian named King Willonius, who was inspired by a Rick Ross tweet in which the Miami rapper accused Drake of getting a BBL done. Udio, the app used to make the song, produced a vintage-sounding song that Metro then interpolated to make a beat, which he then offered up on social media for anyone to use for any purpose, which pretty much ensured its spread.
I wasn’t aware king but thank you for your contribution to history
Meanwhile, Drake, in an effort to take back control of the narrative, has co-opted it by attaching it to the end of Sexyy Red’s Tay Keith-produced new single, “U My Everything.” You can see the thinking behind it; he’s proved adept at flipping the internet’s jokes in the past, but this time, he may be in over his head.
Summer is just around the corner, that means it’s time to break out those razors and put on some shorts. That means retailers are starting to advertise their their summer collections to prime people for the newest trends. But there are some trends that may need to be retired before they catch on if you take the reviews of women online.
Free People, a specialty lifestyle brand for bohemian styled fashion, have released a new style of shorts. The internet seems to be slightly confused on if the material they received from the retail brand is supposed to be shorts or something else entirely. They’re supposedly shorts, but they’re “micro shorts,” which are similar to shorts you’d see in the wild.
They have two leg holes, a hole for your body and less material than pants. Checks off all the requirements for a pair of shorts…except, they appear to be about the length of underwear. That’s not an exaggeration and to prove that point a couple of women bought some to try on so you don’t have to. The videos are not only honest but hilarious.
In one video Nicole Walters, a New York Times best selling author and mom to three girls decided to order the shorts to see how they looked on someone with, “thigh meat.” She wears a size 12 and often jokes about being a curvier on the bottom. When she pulled the shorts out, it looked as if she was going to have to perform a magic trick to get them on. They looked to be the size a small child would wear, but they seemed to have gone on easily even though they looked extremely uncomfortable. She looked uncomfortable. The viewers likely looked uncomfortable.
“Oh wow. They’re in there and by in there I mean everywhere. There’s a lot of thigh meat happening right now in the, this region,” Walters says as she gestures at her upper thighs. “There’s some thigh meat, um…uh…I feel like they’re definitely in some places that I didn’t know I had.”
Walter’s review of the shorts has people in stitches as she jokes about her Christianity falling out of the shorts.
“It’s the Barbie walk for me lol!!! Thank you for your service,” one person says.
“The way you warn us that you’re going to turn around almost made me scream with laughter,” someone writes.
“I’m just going to go ahead and dial 911 for help bc looks like you may need the jaws of life to come out them shorts…lol!! Your commentary had me dying laughing..lol,” another commenter jokes.
In another Free People “micro shorts” try on video, Nicole Story Dent braved the itty bitty shorts to show her audience the summer trend they can look forward to seeing. The first pair of shorts has multiple flaps that appear to be large pockets which inspires Dent to pretend to fly in them before the discomfort sinks in.
“It’s kinda giving waitress…if they ever want to make a Waffle House-Hooters hybrid, we have their uniform, she says. “We have been asking for more pockets so they delivered. Speaking of delivered, you could deliver a baby without having to take these shorts off.”
Dent guesses that the shorts would be more like “jundies” or “janties” than jorts, the shorthand term for jean shorts. Commenters couldn’t stop laughing at her description of the shorts while others provided her with words of wisdom.
“Do NOT drop it low in these jundies, that kind of contact with the club floor is NOT hygienic,” someone writes.
“‘There is nothing vegan about these. There is absolutely a cat being harmed!’ I’m cackling! You really should win something from Free People for this! @freepeople we found your next model,” another person jokes.
“This is the kind of content the internet was made for, it’s just so good. However my thighs started getting chafed just watching this,” someone laughs.
Surely these shorts were made for someone and they will look fabulous on whoever that person may be. But right now, there are a lot of confused, thoroughly tickled ladies on the internet who know they are not the target audience. If you’re brave enough to give these micro shorts a try, go ahead and stock up on some baby powder for all the chaffing.
Kevin Costner is a Hollywood mainstay, but it’s fair to say that the directorial side of his career has ebbed and flowed. For every Open Range and Dances With Wolves, there’s a Waterworld or The Postman, but Costner persists. He’s determined to bring the world his Horizon: An American Saga in four parts, for which two films are already finished and on the theatrical schedule. The final pair’s survival will depend upon how the first half fares with audiences, but Costner is in it to win it, even if that meant saying goodbye to John Dutton on Yellowstone in the midst of the Taylor Sheridan force of nature’s final season.
Much of the current Costner chatter revolves around him setting his record straight on what, exactly, went wrong with the timing of his rebooted movie career and scheduling for his Taylor Sheridan show’s final episodes. Yet the Field of Dreams star knows his current and most enduring audience, and he asked them to expect a different kind of Western experience than is usually found onscreen because Horizon does not revolve around a previously established settlement. And it’s time to get down to cowboy business with what fans will see in Chapter 1 arriving soon.
Plot
Costner previously let Variety know that his four-part saga will allow the audience to “in a sense, feel themselves in this movie.” That statement sits alongside the fact that Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 takes place in the 1860s during the U.S. Civil War from the viewpoint of settlers in the American West. Costner believed so strongly in this project that he’s going full James Cameron here.
That is to say, Horizon was preannounced as several films without waiting for a studio greenlight after a traditional box-office run. Costner even decided to make that leap because (as he told Hollywood Reporter) “When no one wanted to make the first one, I got the bright idea to make four.” That’s a difficult goal to finance in the 2020s from any angle, but perhaps even more so for Costner, who has had his share of big-budget directorial busts. Still, he believes in this project enough to have poured many millions of his own money into the endeavor and even sold his ranch to do so. Heck, Costner declared that he would sell even more homes if necessary, and he’s even hitting the early days of filming Chapter 3 before the first film arrives.
Costner’s Yellowstone audience should be fairly sticky for these movies, and he did pull off a standing ovation that ran (accounts do differ on length) anywhere from 7-10 minutes, during which those eyes did not remain dry:
Kevin Costner gets teary-eyed during the standing ovation for his film “Horizon: An American Saga” at Cannes. pic.twitter.com/ddOxeGUprm
That ovation (and his obvious gratitude) hopefully helped him raise funding in Cannes, and perhaps those unsubtle negative reviews, including from Ryan Lattanzio of Indiewire, who described the film as though Costner was “trying to out-Taylor Sheridan Taylor Sheridan.”
However, Warner Bros. had enough faith to bet big on releasing two Horizon films within months of each other. Here’s the Chapter 1 synopsis:
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.
Cast
Costner, of course, stars in the movie. He has also pulled together a vast ensemble cast befitting a tale of the frontier. Those actors include Sienna Miller, Tom Payne, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, Jamie Campbell Bower, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Owen Crow Shoe, Angus Macfadyen, Tatanka Means, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Amos Jason Charging Cloud, Bodhi Okuma Linton, Giovanni Ribisi, Gregory Cruz, James Russo, nd Ella Hunt.
Release Date
Horizon: An American Saga will arrive with Chapter 1 in theaters on June 28. The already completed Chapter 2 will follow on August 16.
