When it comes to spring and summer beer, it’s difficult to beat the appeal of Allagash White. This iconic brew from the Portland, Maine-based brewery is always ranked among the best wheat beers in the US beer marketplace. This award-winning Belgian-style wheat beer is balanced, flavorful, and a crushable 5.2% ABV — perfect for an unseasonably warm spring day, or a humid, hazy summer night.

Made to pay homage to traditional Belgian witbiers, this year-round favorite is brewed with malted wheat, oats, and raw wheat. It’s cloudy, unfiltered and gets added flavor from the addition of Curaçao orange peel and coriander. The result is a sweet wheat, yeasty, cloudy, gently spiced wheat beer you’ll never want to put down.

If you ever do decide to put it down but want to try something similar, there are at least a few beers that will appeal to you. Instead of making you find them, we did the work for you. Below, you’ll find eight of the best wheat beers (some American, some Belgian, and even one from Germany) to buy if you already love Allagash White. Keep scrolling to see which wonderful wheat beers made the list.

8.) Hoegaarden Wit

Hoegaarden Wit
Hoegaarden

ABV: 4.9%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

When it comes to Belgian witbiers, there are none more well-known than Hoegaarden Wit. This timeless wheat beer is brewed with water, barley, wheat, and hops as well as orange peels and coriander. The result is a classic, cloudy, yeasty, lightly spiced, citrus-forward wheat beer.

Tasting Notes:

The nose is filled with aromas of yeast, freshly baked bread, fruit esters, ripe bananas, cloves, coriander, and other light spices. The palate continues this trend with notes of sweet wheat, yeasty, bready malts, orange peels, fruit esters, bananas, wintry spices, and bubblegum. It’s sweet, spicy, and very memorable.

Bottom Line:

There’s a reason Hoegaarden is such a popular beer. It’s simple yet balanced and flavorful. It’s a great choice for fans of Allagash White.

7.) Ommegang Witte

Ommegang Witte
Ommegang

ABV: 5.2%

Average Price: $12 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Brewery Ommegang’s whole concept is to create the closest thing to an authentic Belgian-style brewery in Central New York. While it makes a variety of award-winning brews, one of our favorites is its Ommegang Witte. This Belgian-style witbier is brewed with malted and unmalted wheat, flaked oats, and Hallertau Spalter Select hops. It gets its classic flavor from the addition of sweet orange peel and coriander.

Tasting Notes:

Before your first sip, you’ll be greeted by aromas of yeasty bread, sweet wheat, cloves, coriander, bananas, and more light spices. The palate is loaded with citrus zest, yeasty freshly baked bread, wheat, cloves, coriander, bananas, and gentle spices. The finish is sweet, yeasty, and has very little bitterness.

Bottom Line:

Ommegang Witte is the kind of beer you imagine when you think of authentic Belgian-style witbiers. It’s that good.

6.) Hitachino Nest White Ale

Hitachino Nest White Ale
Hitachino

ABV: 5.5%

Average Price: $5 for a 12-ounce bottle

The Beer:

This Japanese-made Belgian-style witbier is the perfect choice for fans of Allagash White. Brewed with ale yeast, wheat, flaked wheat, torrified wheat, as well as Perle, Celleia, Amarillo, and Styrian Goldings hops. This popular beer gets extra flavor from the addition of not only coriander and orange peel but also nutmeg and orange juice.

Tasting Notes:

A nose of bready malts, yeast, sweet wheat, orange zest, tangerine, and gentle wintry spices greets you before your first sip. Drinking it reveals notes of bready malts, yeast, sweet wheat, lemon zest, orange peels, coriander, cloves, fruit esters, and other light spices. It’s filled with citrus goodness.

Bottom Line:

While it has the classic witbier spice element, it’s heavy (in a good way) on citrus aromas and flavors.

5.) St. Bernardus Wit

St. Bernardus Wit
St. Bernardus

ABV: 5.5%

Average Price: $19 for a 750ml bottle

The Beer:

If you’re looking for a classic Belgian witbier, you can’t go wrong with St. Bernardus Wit. The highly-rated witbier is loaded with sweet malty flavors as well as coriander, orange peels, and gentle spices. It’s as well-balanced as a wheat beer gets. What do you expect from a classic Belgian beer?

Tasting Notes:

Complex notes of funky yeast, bready malts, ripe bananas, orange peel, clove, coriander, cracked black pepper, and light fruit esters. The palate is a mix of yeasty bread, sweet malts, orchard fruits, esters, bananas, pepper, coriander, and clove. The finish is lightly floral, and hoppy, and has just a hint of pleasant bitterness.

Bottom Line:

When it comes to balance and overall flavor, you can do much worse than St. Bernardus Wit. This is an outstanding beer.

4.) Avery White Rascal

Avery White Rascal
Avery

ABV: 5.6%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

The Beer:

This popular Belgian-style white ale is brewed with Sterling hops, 2-row malts, wheat, and wheat icon as well as house Belgian wit strain. This classic, award-winning, unfiltered witbier gets its iconic flavor from the addition of coriander and Curaçao orange peel.

Tasting Notes:

Classic aromas of yeasty bread, sweet wheat, coriander, clove, candied orange peels, and light-cracked black pepper make for a memorable start to this beer. The palate is a symphony of yeast, fresh bread, caramel malts, orange peels, clove, coriander, and sweet wheat flavors. It’s malty, fruit, and highly memorable.

Bottom Line:

Spicy, fruity, yeasty, and loaded with wheat, what’s not to love? This is a great example of a well-made American-made Belgian-style witbier.

3.) Jolly Pumpkin Blanca

Jolly Pumpkin Blanca
Jolly Pumpkin

ABV: 4.8%

Average Price: $14 for a 750ml bottle

The Beer:

Also known as Calabaza Blanca, Jolly Pumpkin Blanca is a farmhouse-style witbier crafted to taste like the traditional Belgian beers that came before it. It’s sweet, tart, dry, and perfectly spiced. This is due to being brewed with Tettnang hops, pilsner malt, wheat malt, and raw wheat as well as coriander, sweet orange peel, and bitter orange peel.

Tasting Notes:

A lot is going on with this beer’s nose. It’s kind of funky, yeasty, and filled with sweet wheat aromas. There are also notes of cracked black pepper, coriander, and candied orange peels. On the palate, you’ll find notes of funky yeast, bready malts, orange peels, lemon zest, coriander, clove, fruit esters, pepper, and lightly floral hops. The finish is dry and lightly bitter.

Bottom Line:

This one is for the witbier fans who enjoy more funk, yeast, and unfiltered flavors. It’s a great choice for Allagash White drinkers.

2.) Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier

Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier
Weihenstephaner

ABV: 5.4%

Average Price: $13 for a six-pack

The Beer:

Weihenstephaner is the oldest brewery in the world with a genesis in 1040. In that time, the brewers have done a pretty good job perfecting their brews. One of the best is its Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier. This award-winning German beer is known for its unfiltered appearance and notes of bananas and cloves.

Tasting Notes:

This beloved beer begins with a nose of orange peels, lemon zest, yeasty bread, wheat, fruit esters, gentle spices, and a nice kick of ripe banana. The palate continues this trend with yeasty bread, sweet malts, ripe bananas, clove, bubblegum, sweet orange peels, and light fruit esters. It’s sweet, spicy, and leaves you craving more.

Bottom Line:

When it comes to German-made wheat beers, you’ll have a hard time finding one more well-balanced and flavorful than Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier.

1.) Unibroue Blanche de Chambly

Unibroue Blanche de Chambly
Unibroue

ABV: 5%

Average Price: $11 for a six-pack

The Beer:

If you’ve never tried Quebec’s Unibroue, now is the time. Its Unibroue Blanche de Chambly is a great choice for Allagash White fans. This award-winning, year-round Belgian-style witbier is known for its yeasty, wheat flavor, orange zest, and light spices.

Tasting Notes:

A nose of bready malts, yeast, wheat, cloves, coriander, orange peels, and lemon makes for a traditional start to this beer. Drinking it reveals hints of caramel malts, fresh bread, yeast, sweet wheat, honey, fruit esters, coriander, orange peels, and light acidity. Sweet, malty, yeasty, fruity, and perfectly acidic.

Bottom Line:

When it comes to well-rounded wheat beers to drink if you love Allagash White, you’ll have a tough time finding one better than Unibroue Blanche de Chambly.

The ‘Most Necessary’ Sex Scene In A Movie Has An Equally Memorable Sex Scene In The Film’s Sequel

crank 2
lionsgate

Earlier this week, we wrote about the “most unnecessary sex scene in a movie,” which is, in fact, the most necessary sex scene in a movie. If Jason Statham‘s adrenaline-junkie Crank character Chev Chelios (what a fantastic collection of words) doesn’t have sex with Amy Smart as she’s bent over a mailbox in public while a crowd cheers them on, he’ll literally die.

The (sigh) discourse around (double sigh) sex scenes in movies brought a lot of overdue attention to Crank and its batsh*t sequel, Crank: High Voltage, which has an equally memorable — and necessary — sex scene. As X user @Douggernaut_2 wrote, “was super heartening to see everyone go ‘No this sex scene is actually super necessary’ in response to the Crank scene. but i must remind everyone that the sequel’s sex scene is even better. amy smart super underrated in these ‘Give the kitty some more cream!’ is so gd funny.”

Fair warning: this scene is more NSFW than the Crank clip.

Back in 2006, Statham was asked about having sex in public in the original Crank. “I was concentrating on what I was up to,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I mean, the most challenging thing was because it was uncharted territory for me. I’ve done a lot of things in action films, but I’ve never had to do what we had to do in this movie, me and Amy [Smart, his costar]. Oh god! I have to take my hat off to her because you know she really did indulge herself, with no princely attitude — she was really game!”

You can see reactions to the Crank: High Voltage racetrack scene — tied for the most necessary sex scene in a movie? — below.

Crank: High Voltage is available to stream on Max.

The Packing Essentials For Electric Daisy Carnivals, As Told By DJs

EDC LAS VEGAS
MERLE COOPER/UPROXX

PSA: We’re just days away from Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas!

As the largest electronic dance music festival in North America, EDC Las Vegas will once again return to the Las Vegas Speedway to host over 230 global dance music icons across its multiple stages. Starring hitmakers Zedd, Tiësto, David Guetta, John Summit, FISHER, Kaskade, Diplo, Deadmau5, Peggy Gou, and more, this weekend will be one for the books.

EDC LAS VEGAS
ALEX PEREZ

EDC Las Vegas is slated to bring in over half a million attendees to experience Insomniac’s flagship festival. Those in attendance can expect larger-than-life programming across its nine music stages, all of which represent a distinct union of technology and nature — where elements mix to ignite the senses and inspire the imagination: kineticFIELD, cosmicMEADOW, circuitGROUNDS, neonGARDEN, bassPOD, wasteLAND, quantumVALLEY, stereoBLOOM, bionicJUNGLE, and EDC’s famed roaming Art Cars.

Knowing there’s no carnival without rides, EDC will once again host an oversized playground. There’s also the art, where attendees will be able to explore a world of three-dimensional superstructures, LED environments, and immersive art installations.

EDC Las Vegas
JAMAL EID

Then there’s Downtown EDC. As the festival’s “buzzing entertainment area,” Downtown EDC will welcome a slew of characters throughout its Kandi Kasino, Good Times (70s style disco party), YeeDC Saloon, The Queen (drag bar), Chapel of Technology and Chapel of Nature (because who wouldn’t want to get hitched here?!), Marry Me at EDC to honor non-legal ceremonies among lovers and friends, and more.

At this point, if you think festivals only offer a landscape for partying, you’re out of touch. As seen throughout our experiences at Envision Festival, Texas Eclipse, Deep Tropics, and Sacred Acre, festivals serve as a safe space for those wanting top-tier party programming while staying true to themselves. This year, EDC Las Vegas will host several new art installations, including The Hiyo House. Nestled within Camp EDC, this space will serve sober-curious attendees with free samples of Hiyo, the festival’s premiere non-alcoholic social tonic, paired with photo opportunities, aura readings, and more.

With that said, if you’re starting to pack for this weekend but need some motivation from EDC artist themselves, we’ve got you covered. We tapped some of our favorite artists performing on the stereoBLOOM stage to tell us their essentials for the festival, how far they’re traveling, their most-anticipated performance or happening at EDC, and more.

OMNOM (@imomnom)

OMNOM
OMNOM

What’s your #1 travel & festival essential for EDC Las Vegas?

My Theragun Mini. Last year we walked about 6 miles in a single night at EDCLV. I threw that thing in my backpack last minute as we left our hotel but it actually ended up being so clutch for my legs/back by the end of the night I bring it everywhere now.

What’s something that all fans should pack for EDC?

A massive external battery for your cell phone. EDC goes so much later than most festivals I think a lot of people underestimate how long they’ll actually be in there. And having a dead phone at the end of the night is never fun.

How far are you traveling to get to EDC Las Vegas this year?

Not far, just coming from Los Angeles. No jet lag thankfully.

What is something that everyone should know about EDC Las Vegas before heading inside?

They should know how massive the festival actually is. It’s difficult to put into words and you can’t fully grasp the scale of it until you’re in there. I recommend spending at least a few hours each night just exploring all the different areas of the speedway. There are so many crazy installations hidden away all over the place you’ll definitely make some crazy memories on some side quests.

Besides your own set, what other performance or area of the festival should be on your must-see itinerary?

Eric Prydz, Hamdi, Boys Noize, Eli Brown B2B Hi-Lo, Hedex, Bou, Worship are all must-sees.

What’s your favorite ride at EDC Las Vegas?

I remember the Swings right next to the Stereobloom stage were awesome last time I was out there for EDCLV. You get a such a great view of the nearby stage from above the crowd.

What’s a tip you want to share from your own personal Headliner’s Handbook?

The more fun the people around you are having, the more fun you will have. Everyone’s energy feeds off of each other, so make sure you try to spread a positive vibe wherever you go. Don’t be selfish with your experience and ruin that of others. Understand that everyone around you has been looking forward to this weekend just as long as you have and now you’re all finally at EDC Vegas TOGETHER.

Riordan (@riordan.uk)

What’s your #1 travel & festival essential for EDC Las Vegas?

Sunscreen. Hands down. You have to remember I’m from the UK, I am not used to desert-level heat. If it gets above 60 degrees here everyone has their top off. Without sunscreen I’ll look like a tomato by the time I get on stage, so it’s gotta be a top priority. Just looking at the weather forecast is already making me sweat. Come to think of it, deodorant is a close second.

How far are you traveling to get to EDC Las Vegas this year?

A long way. 5,217 miles to be precise. I’m coming from my home in London and will be flying in the evening before my set, and staying for the whole weekend after. It’s my first EDC and my first time in Vegas so I had to make the most of it. I have accepted that my time zones will be completely messed up, so I may as well party and enjoy it.

Besides your own set, what other performance or area of the festival should be on your must-see itinerary?

There are too many great names to put it down to just one, the lineup is so stacked. But a few artists I cannot miss are Hamdi, Interplanetary Criminal, Jamie Jones, Peggy Gou, and Sidney Charles. I’ve never been to EDC before so I don’t know the stages well at all, but it’s no surprise that wherever the house & UKG is, you will find me.

What’s your #1 travel & festival essential for EDC Las Vegas?

This might seem like common sense, but definitely comfortable shoes. You do a lot of walking at EDC! Additionally, it’s going to reach 100 degrees throughout the weekend so electrolytes are a must.

How far are you traveling to get to EDC Las Vegas this year?

Thankfully not too far this year, I’ll be coming in from Denver.

Besides your own set, what other performance or area of the festival should be on your must-see itinerary?

Sara Landry is a must see.

Honeyluv (@honeyluv)

Honeyluv
HONEYLUV

What’s your #1 travel & festival essential for EDC Las Vegas?

I can’t play my set without my USB.

What’s something that all fans should pack for EDC?

Water is life. Water is your friend.

How far are you traveling to get to EDC Las Vegas this year?

Very far! All the way from London, UK!

Burger King’s Glow Up Continues With Their New Mozzarella Fries

burger_king_Mozzarella_Fries(1600x500)
Burger King/Uproxx

Is Burger King in the midst of a glow-up?

Admittedly, I have not been kind to Burger King over the years. The restaurant routinely ranks near the bottom of our various fast food rankings. I’ve given BK the benefit of the doubt time and time again, only to end up disappointed. But so far, 2024 has been different.

Last month, BK launched the Buffalo Sauced Nuggets, a spicy and tangy take on its Chicken Nugget. Not only did they perform admirably in a blind taste test against a range of other delicious nuggets, but I named the new menu addition one of the five essential Burger King menu items. And now, just a month later, Burger King is back with another new menu item — Mozzarella Fries.

The Mozzarella Fries are available as a permanent menu option at BK restaurants nationwide. Considering I’m a big fan of fried Mozzarella, I have pretty high hopes for these fried cheese sticks, even if I think the name is a bit confusing (these aren’t fries in any way, shape, or form, it’s just what BK decided to call them because I guess “mozzarella stick” isn’t appetizing enough).

We picked up an order and put them to a taste test to see if Burger King is two for two in 2024. Come on BK, don’t let me down.

Mozzarella Fries Taste Test

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:

Before I get into what these taste like, let’s talk about the name. Why are these called “Mozzarella Fries?” Well, because Burger King’s branding team is a bunch of dorks.

The menu has both chicken nuggets and chicken fries, the latter being the same processed chicken as the nugget in the shape of a French fry. It’s a small change but ultimately features a different breading-to-meat ratio, and a different blend of seasoning that leans more on the zesty side. It’s altered enough to justify a name change. That doesn’t justify naming these mozzarella sticks “Mozzarella Fries,” in our opinion, but ultimately, who cares right?

All that matters is whether or not these taste good. And I’m happy to say, they do! (Mostly.)

The Mozzarella Fries have that zesty pepper and onion-forward flavor that fans of Chicken Fries will recognize, but with a small touch of Italian seasoning, giving this cheese stick an herbal note that pairs nicely with marinara sauce. The cheese is creamy and flavorful, but also very salty. Unfortunately, that means these require sauce to help mask some of that saltiness.

Dane Rivera

Another gripe I have is that the cheese isn’t quite as luxurious or thick as I’d hoped. If you’re looking for a luxurious and appetizing cheese trail, what you’ll find here is thinner and stringy.

Small issues aside though, this is a positive step for the BK-menu and will definitely have me back in the drive-thru sooner than later.

The Bottom Line:

This year BK is two-for-two when it comes to new menu additions. These Mozzarella Fries are a must order, we recommend adding them to whatever you normally get from BK. In fact, I’d even go as far as to say they’re worth a trip to the BK drive-thru ASAP.

Wow, that’s a sentence I never thought I’d write in 2024.

When Does ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ Season 3, Episode 4 Come Out?

Welcome to Wrexham
FX

Welcome To Wrexham has become a fan-favorite for both soccer/football fans and non-soccer/football fans and fans of either Ryan Reynolds or Rob McElhenney or both. There’s a lot to work with here.

A fourth season of the hit series has already been ordered, despite the fact that season three basically just began. Nick Grad, president of FX entertainment, said, “Wrexham AFC has exceeded all expectations on the pitch and with fans, scoring back-to-back promotions under the leadership of Rob and Ryan and rising to compete in League One next season,” Grad said in a statement. Get ready to see even MORE Ryan Reynolds on your screen, as if that were even possible.

Until then, season three is still going strong. Episode four, titled “Risky Business,” will air Thursday, May 16 at 10 EDT on FX. It will land on Hulu and Disney+ on Friday, May 17th by 3 am EST.

Here is the official synopsis for episode four, which features a prank war, obviously: “The Birthday Prank War between Co-Chairmen Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds escalates as Wrexham is reminded of the fragility of the city’s rebound on and off the field.”

Check out the season three trailer below:

When Do ‘Hacks’ Season 3, Episodes 5 & 6 Come Out?

Christina Hendricks Hacks Max
Max/WBD/HBO

If you aren’t watching Hacks, then you are missing out on a breezy, whip-smart, sexy, and funny comedy series that tackles the many sides of life in the spotlight. Last time around, the legendary Deborah Vance enjoyed her roast more than sensitive Tom Brady, and now, it’s finally time for Christina Hendricks to make her entrance on the Max comedy series.

When Doe ‘Hacks’ Season 3, Episodes 5 & 6 Come Out?

The two newest episodes will stream on Thursday, May 17 at 3:00am EST/12:00am PST.

The Episode 5 (“One Day”) description is not even half as entertaining as the episode itself: “As Deborah contends with writer’s block and Ava with a broken heart, the pair decide to clear their heads in the woods.”

As for Episode 6 (“Power Play”), the description is also much more businesslike than what actually transpires: “Deborah participates in a golf tournament to get face time with the cable affiliates who could decide her future.”

Will Deborah ever get her run as a late-night host? That’s the most pressing question of the season, but this show skillfully manages to be about several other different dilemmas of the human existence. As always, Ava and Deborah will get on each other’s nerves but be unable to quit their pairing. It’s not fun for the whole family, but for the intended audience, it’s remarkably effective.

Our Review Of The New Popeyes Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich

Popeyes New Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich(1600x500)
Uproxx/Popeyes

Popeyes doesn’t need to do anything else to be the king of fried chicken sandwiches. Since 2019, the chain has been the place to go if you want the best chicken sandwich in all of fast food. There have been some worthy competitors, to be sure — Dave’s Hot Chicken and Shake Shack’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich come to mind — but nothing hits quite like the GOAT.

So anytime Popeyes does decide to make a change, we treat it like a big deal.

In the five years since its release, we’ve seen a sweet and spicy celebrity-backed version of the classic Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich, an iteration with Havarti cheese and bacon, and last year, an unbreaded Blackened version. All three were still amongst the best in all of fast food, but what surprised it most was the Blackened version. That’s right, Popeyes can skip the breading — the very thing that gives chicken sandwiches their pleasing crunch — and still make one of the best chicken sandwiches in the game.

With all that success, we were fired up to taste the Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich. It’s currently available now at participating Popeyes locations nationwide and, as far as we can tell, this is a permanent menu fixture. So how does the new sandwich measure up to the rest of the Popeyes chicken sando menu?

Here are our thoughts.

Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich Taste Test

Dane Rivera

Thoughts & Tasting Notes

Thick and luxurious. That’s how I’d describe Popeyes Golden BBQ. The sauce is much sweeter than typical BBQ sauce with some floral cracked pepper notes and a mellow tang in place of smokiness.

The sweet and tangy sauce elevates the flavor of the Popeyes chicken breading, which features a mix of garlic and onion powder, black pepper, and the slightest hint of cayenne.

I already think Popeyes’ chicken breading leans on the sweet and buttery side (compared to KFC’s more herbal breading) and this sauce helped to accentuate the savory and indulgent quality of the fried chicken filet. Overall, I think the Golden BBQ is a nice — albeit, non-essential — remix of the typical Popeyes Fried Chicken sandwich.

The Bottom Line:

If you like your BBQ sauce tangy and sweet rather than smokey, the Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich is worth a pick-up. But it’s not a significant change, so if our tasting notes aren’t appetizing you, you’re probably not missing out on anything by sticking with whatever your preferred chicken sando build is.

His life is also spared after standing up to Douda, but it doesn’t come without a price, as Douda says Emmett will only live if he kills someone for him.
