Everyone Is Calling ‘The Most Unnecessary Sex Scene In A Movie’ The *Most* Necessary Sex Scene In A Movie

crank
lionsgate

In terms of dumb Twitter debates, arguing the necessity of sex scenes in movies and TV shows is fairly harmless. But it’s still annoying. Usually, the person who did the bad tweet “doesn’t have many followers (they’re certainly not a major critical voice or creative in the industry), but their complaint is that they don’t like sex scenes in movies,” as Matt Goldberg wrote on his Substack. But this time, it came from an account with over two million followers.

“most unnecessary sex scene in a movie,” @everymovieplug tweeted over the weekend, along with a clip from director Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s wonderfully wild 2006 film Crank. In it, Chev Chelios (played by Jason Statham) bends Eve Lydon (Amy Smart) over a mailbox in public and begins having sex with her from behind while on-lookers cheer them on.

The sex scene rules because Crank rules, but I would also contend that it’s the most necessary sex scene in a movie ever. The plot of Crank is that Chev Chelios — who should always be referred to by his full name — has been injected with a drug and the only way to counteract the poison is to keep his adrenaline up. It’s like Speed, but Staham’s body is the bus (OK, it’s not really like Speed but just going with me here). If he doesn’t have sex in this moment, he dies. Sounds pretty necessary to me. The community note agrees.

Report: Bronny James Is ‘Expected To Stay’ In The 2024 NBA Draft After Getting Medically Cleared

Bronny James has cleared a major hurdle ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, and as a result, the eldest son of LeBron James is apparently slated to forego the remainder of his collegiate eligibility and make the jump to the league. According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Jonathan Givony of ESPN, the NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel gave James the all-clear in the aftermath of his cardiac arrest and an ensuing heart procedure before this past college basketball season.

While James can now go through the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago that runs through May 19 before making up his mind on whether he’ll go pro or return to college — the deadline for that decision is May 29 — Shams Charania of The Athletic brought word that the expectation is James will make the jump to the NBA.

ESPN reports that James is going to participate in 5-on-5 scrimmages in Chicago as part of the combine process. If he does end up going to the NBA, James will have to do so on the back of a difficult freshman season at USC which was severely hampered by his medical issues, as the former 4-star recruit averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 0.8 steals in 19.3 minutes per game — he did not suit up for the Trojans until Dec. 10, and only six of his 19 appearances for the team came as a member of the starting lineup. At the conclusion of the Trojans’ season, James declared for the NBA Draft while entering the transfer portal.

All The Best New Music From This Week That You Need To Hear

bnm
Getty Image

Keeping up with new music can be exhausting, even impossible. From the weekly album releases to standalone singles dropping on a daily basis, the amount of music is so vast it’s easy for something to slip through the cracks. Even following along with the Uproxx recommendations on a daily basis can be a lot to ask, so every Monday we’re offering up this rundown of the best new music this week.

This week saw Megan Thee Stallion slither in with a new song and Ice Spice goes Y2K on a single of her own. Yeah, it was a great week for new music. Check out the highlights below.

For more music recommendations, check out our Listen To This section, as well as our Indie Mixtape and Pop Life newsletters.

Megan Thee Stallion — “Boa”

Mean Thee Stallion crushed it with “Boa” last week. Aside from confidently shutting down her haters on the track, the video is a perfect tribute to the video game worlds that Meg loves so dearly.

Post Malone — “I Had Some Help” Feat. Morgan Wallen

Post Malone is seemingly making it his mission to work with all of today’s biggest stars. He notably had appearances on perhaps the two biggest albums of the year so far (Taylor Swift’s and Beyoncé’s), and now he has linked up with Morgan Wallen on a new single, “I Had Some Help.” It’s an upbeat tune and a natural fit for country radio, and given the star power of both artists involved, expect to hear this one a lot this summer.

Ice Spice — “Gimmie A Light”

Ice has become a major star over the past couple years and now her super-anticipated debut album, Y2K, is nigh. As fans wait for that to arrive, she released “Gimmie A Light” last week,” and it’s a great way to bring Sean Paul’s 2002 classic “Gimme The Light” to present day.

Charli XCX — “360”

Brat has so far been a relative departure from the radio-ready pop of Charli XCX’s preceding album Crash, but that’s not to say it’s not inviting and catchy. Last week’s “360” certainly is, and it arrived with a video featuring folks like Julia Fox and Emma Chamberlain.

Gunna — “Still Prevail”

Gunna’s One Of Wun has arrived, and even here, it seems Drake can’t catch a break: A line from the album has some thinking Gunna has joined essentially the rest of the world in going after the embattled Canadian rapper.

Camila Cabello — “He Knows” Feat. Lil Nas X

Post Malone and Morgan Wallen didn’t have the only star collab of the week. Camila Cabello is rolling out her upcoming album C, XOXO and she did so last week with “He Knows,” a Lil Nas X collaboration that’s rhythmic and steamy.

Orville Peck and Noah Cyrus — “How Far Will We Take It?”

On the new EP Stampede: Vol. 1, Orville Peck enlisted a handful of other singers to join him on duets. He links up with Noah Cyrus on “How Far Will We Take It?,” a bittersweet look at heartache and uncertainty.

Stray Kids — “Lose My Breath” Feat. Charlie Puth

Puth has become a friend to the K-pop community over the past few years: He and Jung Kook collaborated in 2022, he linked up with Jimin last year, and last week, he strayed from the BTS-osphere by teaming with Stray Kids on “Lose My Breath.”

Coi Leray — “Lemon Cars”

Coi Leray is primarily a rapper, but that’s also not all she does. Her new single, “Lemon Cars,” is indebted to synthpop and takes a vulnerable look at a strip club employee’s tribulations.

Beabadoobee — “Take A Bite”

Beabadoobee will grace this summer with This Is How Tomorrow Moves, a new album. She announced that last week and also shared “Take A Bite,” a lovely 2000s throwback (that guitar line sounds strikingly like Incubus’ “Drive”) that’s about, in Beabadoobee’s words, about “finding comfort in chaos.”

What Is The Most Popular ‘Star Wars’ Movie On Disney+?

phantom
lucasfilm

A wise man (Gungan) once called the Force “maxi big.” You know what else is maxi big? The Disney+ streaming numbers for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The fourth released Star Wars film in the Skywalker Saga — but first in chronological order — is “the most viewed Star Wars movie on the streamer worldwide,” according to Variety.

It finally happened: the prequels are cool. Do I think The Phantom Menace is “good,” especially compared to The Empire Strikes Back? No, not really, but I and millions of other millennials have (possibly misplaced) nostalgic affection for them. If I were a parent, I would be excited to show my child the first Star Wars movies released in my lifetime. Kids need Watto now more than ever.

In 2022, Ewan McGregor, who plays young Obi-Wan Kenobi, discussed the ever-shifting legacy of the prequels. “It was tricky at the time. They weren’t overwhelmingly embraced by everybody when they came out, our prequels,” he told Jimmy Kimmel. “It was nice to watch them now knowing that people love them. That the kids who we made them for at the time — they loved those films a lot. It was nice to watch them with that sense.”

If you’re still hating on the prequels, how wude.

Steve Buscemi Was Hospitalized Following An Attack In New York City

steve buscemi

Steve Buscemi was punched in the face by an “unidentified individual” while walking around New York City.

The incident occurred last Wednesday while the Boardwalk Empire actor (and NYC hero) was in Manhattan. Upon arrival, “officers were informed a 66-year-old male was punched in the face by an unidentified individual,” according to the police statement. Buscemi was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was treated for “bruising, swelling, and bleeding to his left eye.” He has since been released.

The alleged attacker is described as “a male with dark complexion, wearing a dark colored baseball style cap, blue t shirt, black pants, white sneakers, and carrying a book-bag.” The police are looking for the public’s help in tracking down the man (you can see a photo to provided to CNN here).

“Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city,” Buscemi’s publicist wrote in a statement. “He is ok and appreciates everyone’s well wishes, though incredibly sad for everyone that this has happened to while also walking the streets of NY.”

The seemingly random attack is the latest in a string of bizarre incidents in which New York City pedestrians — including several celebrities and influencers — have been attacked walking on the street. In March, fellow former Boardwalk Empire cast member Michael Stuhlbarg was also attacked walking through Central Park.

Stay safe, Michael Shannon.

Donald Glover’s New Childish Gambino Album ‘Atavista’ Is Here, Along With A Quinta Brunson-Starring Video

Yesterday (May 12), fans uncovered some info about Atavista, an upcoming Childish Gambino project from Donald Glover, and it turned out to be true: Glover released the album at midnight today.

He wrote on social media, “this album is the finished version of ‘3.15.20’, the album i put out 4 years ago. there’s a special vinyl coming soon w/ visuals for each song. the all new childish gambino album comes out in the summer.”

There’s also a new video for the Young Nudy collab “Little Foot Big Foot.” The visual itself is a collaboration between two TV comedy icons: Glover (of Community and Atlanta) and Quinta Brunson (of Abbott Elementary), the latter of whom plays the role of a club manager. The black-and-white visual takes place in the swing music era and sees Glover as part of a band playing at a club to unimpressed patrons. Partway through, though, things take an unexpected twist.

Glover has been teasing a lot lately. He announced a tour in April, but just the existence of it and nothing specific like dates or cities. Also that month, he explained, “We’re releasing Atavista, but after that, there’s the final Childish Gambino album — a soundtrack for the fans.”

Rudy Gobert Made The Money Sign At Scott Foster Again After A Game 4 Call

gobert-money-top
TNT

One thing you can always count on in the NBA Playoffs is for the losing team to be mad at the referees. We’ve seen it constantly throughout this year’s postseason, particularly as the officials have allowed more contact and players are trying to find where the new line is regarding physicality (which seems a bit different inside and on the perimeter).

However, Rudy Gobert being frustrated with Scott Foster is nothing new to the postseason, as the Defensive Player of the Year got tagged with a $100,000 fine for making a money sign at Foster during the regular season and then suggesting after the game betting had something to do with the calls. Foster was assigned to Game 4 in Minnesota between the Nuggets and Timberwolves, and Gobert had grown frustrated with the veteran official to the point where he tempted the fates once again by making the money gesture in the fourth quarter after Foster called him for a pretty obvious push going for an offensive rebound.

There were certainly some missed and questionable calls in the game, but that’s also every game ever (and went both ways). It’s particularly funny for Gobert to do this after this particular play because, yeah, you pushed Murray in the back. The league won’t care when you make this motion, as they’ll fine you either way, but you’d get a lot more sympathy from the general public if you were calling out unfair officiating on an actual bad call. They showed the clip on Inside the NBA after the game, and even Charles Barkley let out an exasperated “again.”
