Reggaeton and Afrobeats have had their time dominating the American music market. Now, the genres amapiano and música Mexicana are ready to snag the public’s attention. A budding talent in the música scene is Grammy hopeful Xavi. His latest single, “Corazón De Piedra,” makes it clear that he should be the entertainer to carry the torch for the sound.
The self-proclaimed “sierreño kiss-off anthem” is here to jump-start your romantic recovery after heartbreak.
“And you think that I’m here for your bullsh*t / I tell you to your face, there is a line behind you / This time it won’t be the easy ones / Keep your desires to yoursеlf and get out of here / Evеrything was ruined / You realized that sooner or later this was going to happen / So please let me be / If you see that I have already forgotten you,” sings Xavi.
“Corazón De Piedra” follows Xavi’s standout single “La Diabla,” which helped him earn his debut Latin American Music Awards nomination for New Artist Of The Year. As Xavi finishes his forthcoming debut album, if it sounds anything like “Corazón De Piedra,” he’s on the right track.
The past few years have seen quite a turn from the disappointing video game adaptations of yesteryear. From The Last Of Us to Five Nights At Freddy’s and even Super Mario Bros., gamers have repeatedly been pleasantly surprised with results. This strange era comes after this target audience has learned to live with crushing disappointment when productions failed to translate essential elements to the screen in live-action form. Or arguably even worse, they’ve witnessed when a project starts out fairly strong, like The Witcher on Netflix, but begins to fall apart to the point where the leading man takes flight or another video game project waiting in the wings.
That would be the long-gestating Borderlands film that has been ebbing and flowing in production since 2015, when Eli Roth was initially announced as director. However, all things do happen for a reason, so perhaps the timing for this film — based upon the wildly popular shoot-’em-up game series — could not be better, given how well other video game adaptations have been received lately. Let’s discuss what to expect from this project.
Plot
The film is co-authored by Joe Crombie and Roth, although The Last Of Us showrunner Craig Mazin was reportedly once attached to the script but has since denied being involved.
How will the film compare to the game? Obviously, the characters and setup will be very recognizable, but Roth has been very effusive about how this will not be “too slavish” or a carbon copy of the source material. Further, Roth specified that the movie (or eventual movies) will adhere to their own canon, which will be distinguishable from game canon. Coupled with high expectations, that factor should be telling on how this film is eventually received.
The cast, at least, is stacked, as we will see below, but for the moment, it’s worth highlighting how Roth is re-teaming here (after The House With A Clock In Its Walls) with Jack Black and Cate Blanchett. Black will portray the robot Claptrap, and Blanchett will portray the notorious outlaw Lilith, who has returned to Pandora, and she’s not happy about it. Lilith will be on hand while attempting to locate the “missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas” on Pandora, according to Lionsgate’s description:
Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland, a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina, a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg, Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis, the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap, a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.
Cast
The motley crew of fellow vault hunters will also include Kevin Hart, who previously revealed to Collider that the movie “looks like the game. It’s unbelievable.” Other famous faces include Jamie Lee Curtis (as Dr. Patricia Tennis), Gina Gershon (as Mad Moxxi), and Ariana Greenblatt (as Tiny Tina).
Release Date
As of now, Borderlands will hope to capitalize upon the heat of the summer with a August 9, 2024 theatrical release.

Jeopardy! is all about stone-cold facts (well, most of the time), so it honestly feels a little disrespectful that on Wikipedia, it says the game show has aired “over 8,000 episodes.” Not a specific number, but over 8,000. That’s not technically wrong, but come on. The late, great Alex Trebek would have not put up with this estimation. Thankfully, the official Jeopardy! account on X has the exact number. “Tonight’s broadcast of Jeopardy! will conclude with a celebration of our 9000th episode, each and every one of which has been announced by the legendary Johnny Gilbert! Be sure to tune in!” it reads.
Over 9,000 episodes! For perspective’s sake, the longest-running scripted series in American television history is The Simpsons with only (“only”) 762 episodes, one of which featured a guest star appearance from Trebek. And the 9,000 episodes only includes the syndicated edition — it’s even higher with the original versions.
“I started taking voice lessons when I was still in high school, got a job with a little band and traveled around in that area for a while,” Gilbert told Fox News about how he got started. “That was the beginning of it all.”

I’m flying from the beautiful sunny Los Angeles to Miami for Ultra this year! I’m doing a week of studio time before the festival to wrap up some new music and get prepped for Miami.
The grilled chicken sandwich is a dying breed in fast food. That’s a real shame, too — because while grilled chicken, the healthier sibling of fried chicken, doesn’t have the allure of its fried counterpart, a great one can be just as delicious as the best fried chicken sandwiches in the game. I know, I know, that sounds crazy but a few fast food chains are doing grilled chicken the right way — keeping it juicy and tender and full of flavor.
So if you haven’t given grilled chicken a chance, try it, you might surprise yourself how delicious the experience can be. Seriously.
Despite menus nationwide dropping their grilled chicken options (RIP Wendy’s Grilled Sando and Burger King’s Tendergrill sandwich) the ones that are left are mostly pretty damn delicious. To help guide you to the best of the best, we’ve rounded up all the grilled chicken sandwiches still on fast food menus and ranked them from least to most delicious. When we do big fast food rankings we tend to keep it to just one item per restaurant, but since grilled sandwiches tend to be a bit more varied and creative than fried chicken sandwiches, we’ve decided to include multiple variations from the same restaurant if the build is radically different (this also helps us provide a longer list, who doesn’t love options?).
Let’s dive in and get grilled.

HONORABLE MENTION: Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich (Chill, we know it’s not grilled, let us explain)
Popeyes
Thoughts & Tasting Notes:
I know, I know, I know, it’s not grilled. This is a fried chicken sandwich, but it’s not breaded, so if your whole draw to a grilled chicken sandwich is the slight reduction of carbohydrates, this will satisfy that.
The Blackened Chicken Sandwich is tossed in a blend of black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, salt, a hint of cayenne, and onion powder, and then dropped in a frier until cooked. The result is, unsurprisingly, delicious.
You get that fragrant slightly spicy Popeyes seasoning, without any of the crunch. Since the breast filet here is still fried, you’ll get an interesting texture. It won’t provide an audible crunch, but it scratches that Popeyes craving.
I didn’t want to rank this sando because it seemed unfair, but if I had this would’ve easily dipped into the top 5.
The Bottom Line:
It’s still fried, but it’s not breaded so it lives in this weird halfway point between a fried chicken sandwich and a grilled one. That halfway point happens to taste pretty damn delicious.
Have you ever wanted to just chew into a bulb of garlic? No? Then you probably won’t like this sandwich.
I cannot speak enough about how much I find this sandwich absolutely vile. The sandwich features rotisserie chicken (not technically grilled, but not fried so we’re counting it), bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, and a creamy roasted garlic aioli. Sounds great right? Well, it’s not. This sandwich has exactly one tasting note: garlic. It tastes so overwhelming that it’s inedible.
Roasting garlic is an art, you want it blistered and slightly caramelized, offering a flavor that has a touch of sweetness, floral and caramelized earthiness, and a noticeable depth. It’s supposed to elevate a dish, not drown it. This garlic aioli Subway serves is extremely bitter — which suggests it’s not roasted, it’s burnt.
The Bottom Line:
It sounds good, but if you order this, ditch that garlic aioli and replace it with one of Subway’s other sauces, like the Baja Chipotle.
Again, this isn’t grilled chicken, it’s rotisserie (Subway seems to have discontinued grilled chicken in any of their signature sandwiches), and it’s not even tender juicy rotisserie chicken — it’s dry and stringy.
We’ll grade the chicken for you — it gets an “F” and everything else about this sandwich misses the mark as well.
Mexican food, and I’m totally biased here, is the best food on earth. The flavors are rich, complex, and excite the palate as they dance across your tastebuds. The Mexicali has none of that. There is avocado, which is great, but everything else about this sandwich is bland. Lettuce? Why not cilantro? Tomatoes? Okay, but how about jalapeños? Why is this sandwich so lacking in flavor?
The only saving grace is the Baja chipotle sauce, which tastes fine, but… I mean why not just have some sort of salsa? Do you know how many people would order their sandwich with salsa if it was an option?
In short: Subway makes me so f*cking mad.
The Bottom Line:
Run away from Subway, find your nearest taqueria, and order a f*cking torta.
In the past year, Jack in the Box has made a subtle change to its Grilled Chicken Sandwich. It has removed the mayo and instead replaced it with JiB’s Good Good Sauce. I think this is a massive improvement.
Good Good Sauce is a mix of sweet and savory flavors with a sharp tangy finish, which helps add a bit of life to this sandwich.
Here is what works: The sauce, the sourdough-style bread, which is airy and chewy, the bacon is, well, bacon (hard to mess that up) and… that’s it.
The filet is fine, it’s a bit dry but has a decent flavor. The tomatoes, and the lettuce all leave something to be desired. There is a stunning lack of flavor in the produce that I really think holds this sandwich back.
If you’re looking for an easy tweak to make this sandwich better, order some Frank’s Red Hot on the side.
The Bottom Line:
Respect to JiB for still f*cking with a Grilled Chicken Sandwich and actively trying to improve it. But it’s a few tweaks away from being truly delicious.
If you’re a big Chick-fil-A fan this one is going to feel like it’s ranked very low, and it is, but Chick-fil-A offers much better grilled chicken sandwich and this one is just a bit too bare bones to rank any higher for us. This sandwich features a grilled chicken filet on top of tomatoes, green leaf lettuce, and a toasted multigrain bun. That’s it!
The chicken is delicious, it has a balance between charred flavors with some brightness from lemon and a floral-herbal flavor, it’s some of the best seasoned grilled chicken in all of fast food, but it’s dry like the desert. Yes, you can fix that by choosing your favorite Chick-fil-A sauce and dipping it or smearing it on the top bun, but that’s not how the sandwich comes, so we have to take it and rank it as it is. Ultimately, it tastes too empty to rank any higher.
We’re officially in the category of grilled chicken sandwiches that taste amazing. I don’t have any notes of improvement for Carl’s Jr’s Charbroiled BBQ Chicken, it’s a solid grilled chicken sandwich that is worth ordering if you love BBQ sauce.
Carl’s Jr has some of the best BBQ sauce in the game, it’s tangy, smokey, sweet, and obliterates the dry texture you’re going to get with a charbroiled chicken breast filet. The chicken has a great flavor, I’m tasting salt, black pepper, and that delicious charred flavor, but as a result of the cooking method, it’s a bit dry. Trust me, the BBQ remedies that.
Rounding on the sandwich is tomato and lettuce and while the lettuce is low quality offering more texture than flavor, the tomatoes are deliciously juicy and ripe, bringing brightness to counteract the darker smokey flavors.
It’s the same chicken that’s in the Charbroiled BBQ so it’s good, juicy, charred, and flavorful, and the build here is much better. You’ve got smokey notes from the bacon, a nice infusion of salty and creamy Swiss cheese, and a buttery brioche bun that is soft and easy to chew through. Here is the thing though — instead of BBQ sauce you get mayo, which is fine but… this sandwich would taste better with BBQ.
Why isn’t bacon on the Charbroiled BBQ sandwich? Bacon and BBQ is an unbeatable combination!
While the rule here is to take these sandwiches as they come, I’m going to rank the Charbroiled Chicken Club just a bit higher than the BBQ because I think the addition of bacon and cheese makes this a more satisfying sandwich. But between you and me, switch out that mayo for BBQ.
The Bottom Line:
Bacon, chicken, cheese, what’s not to love? (The mayo, mostly.)
This sandwich is simple, it features a seared chicken breast filet (not technically grilled but we’re counting it) atop a layer of slightly bitter and earthy greens, parmesan crisps, and a garlic aioli sauce-smeared brioche bun. It’s simple, direct, and delicious.
The chicken is tender with a sort of citrusy zest to it and the parmesan crisps, while not particularly flavorful, add a great textural mouthfeel. The garlic aioli is fragrant and savory and elevates the dish. Subway take note — this is how you make garlic aioli!
By searing the chicken, Panera has managed to offer a nice semi-crispy crust to the meat, giving you a similar texture to fried chicken without the crunch. It’s an all-around winner and definitely worth seeking out if you haven’t given Panera a try.
The Bottom Line:
Simple and delicious, Panera offers one of the best-tasting and newest non-fried chicken sandwiches in the fast food space.
6. Carl’s Jr — Charbroiled Santa Fe Chicken Sandwich

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:
I have a bone to pick with Carl’s Jr. This sandwich used to be served on a honey wheat bun and it added a sweet element to the flavor profile that really helped to make this one of my favorite grilled chicken sandwiches, but somewhere over the past two years Carl’s Jr has gotten cheap and dropped the honey wheat bun and replaced it with brioche. It changes the flavor profile, and while it’s still good, I can’t help but miss the old sandwich.
Two things make this sandwich delicious, the Santa Fe Sauce, which tastes like a savory blend of mayo, smokey paprika, earthy curry powder, and a hint of cayenne on the backend to give it a spicy lift, and the mild green chili. More chicken sandwiches need a giant chili in them!
This chili isn’t hot, at all, if you’re looking for spice, look elsewhere, but what it does provide is a nice earthy, vegetal, and smokey top note to the sandwich that makes each bite a true pleasure. There is a delicious medley of natural flavors here, and on top of that you’ve got salty American cheese, and that char-broiled chicken. I rarely say this about any sandwich but: ditch the cheese, you don’t need it.
The Bottom Line:
One of the most interesting and flavorful chicken sandwiches in all of fast food. The green chili here really brings something fresh and interesting to the fast food space.
I love a good grilled chicken sandwich as much as the next person, but one thing most chicken sandwiches are not are decadent and savory in the same way a big bacon cheeseburger is. Smashburger’s Truffle Mushroom Swiss Grilled Chicken sandwich is different though, it takes on the challenge of making a decadent and savory chicken sandwich, and it knocks it out of the park.
This sandwich is bursting with rich flavor, thanks to a mix of toasted crimini mushrooms, truffle mayo, and nutty creamy Swiss cheese. A single bite is an explosion of deep umami flavors with a little bit of funk and a rich savoriness that makes the burger more satisfying than its modest size would suggest.
My only gripe with this sandwich is it’s a bit hard to taste the thin grilled chicken filet underneath all the rich mushroom tones. But ultimately, that’s a small complaint.
The Bottom Line:
A grilled chicken sandwich with big and rich flavors. As savory and delicious as your favorite burger.
4. Chick-fil-A — Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich With Pepper Jack Cheese

Thoughts & Tasting Notes:
The fact that this sandwich exists makes Chick-fil-A’s other grilled chicken sandwich just seem sad by comparison. Joining the tender lemon and herb-marinated chicken are a few strips of smokey bacon, and a layer of cheese (your choice of Colby Jack, American, or Pepper Jack). My suggestion is the pepper jack — it’s creamy, slightly sweet, and adds a small kick of spice to this already delicious medley of flavors.
Like all Chick-fil-A sandwiches, this thing comes sauceless, which is fine. It’s delicious even without sauce, but Chick-fil-A suggests you eat this with some Honey Roasted BBQ and we agree — it strengthens the smokey notes of the bacon and pairs excellently with the citrus-marinated flavor of the meat. I’m going to suggest you try it with Polynesian sauce as well. The Polynesian sauce adds a touch of sweet and sour flavors that help to take your taste buds on a journey, and that’s what good fast food should do.
The Bottom Line:
Hands down, Chick-fil-A’s chicken filet is the best in all of fast food. If you’re looking for the best chicken, this is your sandwich. But if you’d like something a bit more inventive, there are a few more sandwiches we think you should try.
Grilled chicken is marketed as a healthier fast food option, and smartly so, but Panera’s Spicy Take chicken sandwich looks at that marketing, and goes in the exact opposite direction. Guess what? It works! Featuring a seasoned and seared chicken doused in a spicy buffalo sauce, this sandwich sports a double smearing of garlic aioli and a layer of thin-cut crispy fried pickles. The result is an explosion of flavor that shifts from spicy and sweet, to floral and rich, with an earthy tang and a satisfying crunch.
This sandwich is executed perfectly and, on top of that, you can add bacon and avocado.
The Bottom Line:
A must order, we never thought we’d say this but — get to a Panera as quickly as possible to try this sandwich!
The Habit absolutely nails its chicken sandwich. There is an attention to craft here that most of the other sandwiches on this list just can’t match. The chicken is hand-filleted, offering something that isn’t quite as thick as the other filleted breasts on this list, meaning the chicken is juicer and more tender. It’s well-marinated and perfectly seasoned, offering hints of bright lemon and earthy black pepper with each bite.
The idea of a thinner piece of chicken might not sound great to you, I get that, but remember that attention to craft I was talking about? The Habit anticipated the “thin chicken” letdown and added a layer of crispy bacon to the sandwich, which more than makes up for the thinner cut of meat, and on top of all of that, is a layer of freshly cut seasoned avocado, adding a creamy butteriness to this sandwich in both flavor and texture. It is sandwich perfection!
The sandwich has mayo on it too, just to make sure it doesn’t come across as too dry, but it doesn’t need it at all, so if you’re looking to cut calories, look there! Everything in this sandwich is absolutely on point, and then it’s served on some of the best, airy but chewy perfectly toasted sourdough in all of fast food.
Let me make one thing clear — I think The Habit makes mid-tier burgers, so if you share that view and you’re reading this thinking, “This review can’t be for real,” trust me: try the sandwich, it’ll change your mind.
The Bottom Line:
Last year we gave it the top spot in a ranking of 11 chicken sandwiches, this year we have one above it. But make no mistake, this is still a great sandwich and worth a trip to the Habit.
Smashburger’s Colorado Grilled Chicken Sandwich is hands down the best grilled chicken sandwich in all of fast food.
This sandwich is perfect. The breast filet is flattened out a thin, allowing it to get a good char on Smashburger’s grill without drying out. It’s tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The chicken alone is better than most of the competition.
On top of that, you have a layer of pepper jack and cheddar, offering a creamy, nutty, and slightly sharp cheese element to the sandwich. But what sets it apart from everything else is the inclusion of grilled Anaheim chilis.
Anaheim chilis aren’t the spiciest out there, instead what they offer is a very mild heat, a bit of sweetness, some smokiness, and a vegetal tang. What they lack in heat, they make up for in flavor, bringing a lot of depth to this sandwich.
The build is rounded out by crispy lettuce, thin tomatoes, and mayo spread on a toasted chipotle bun. For some extra cash you can add bacon and smashed avocado on to this sandwich to elevate it even further, but try it the way it comes first. You’ll find that it’s perfectly thought out with flavors that all work in harmony.
The Bottom Line:
Our favorite grilled chicken sandwich in all of fast food. A near-perfect blend of flavors.
Following increased speculation about her health and whereabouts, Kate Middleton released a video where the Princess of Wales announced that she’s been diagnosed with cancer.
Since January, Middleton has been missing from the public eye. The official story from Kensington Palace has been that she was recovering from emergency abdominal surgery and would return to her royal duties after Easter. However, Middleton has now confirmed that her health condition is more serious than publicly revealed.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” Middleton said via CNN. “The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”
“As you can imagine, this has taken time,” Middleton explained. “It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok.”
The Princess of Wales concluded by requesting privacy for her and her family, but promised to return to her official duties.
“We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” Middleton said. “My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery.”

This new version comes with eight bonus tracks, which include new remixes from MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden, Jacknife Lee, Dan The Automator, and more. The 2LP vinyl edition is a real looker, with gorgeous “baby pink and opaque spring green” LPs and an eight-page booklet. The digital version comes out on April 5, while the vinyl release will follow on May 17.

Completing her three-part travel docuseries, global dance music superstar and activist LP Giobbi has released the final episode of All In An Airstream.
Teaming up with DJ Tennis, LP Giobbi’s three-part docuseries highlights the duo’s 20-day cross-country road trip in (you guessed it) an Airstream motorhome. The tour – which made stops for pop-up performances in forests, lesser-known venues, and even a library – allowed the producer to slow down and connect more intimately with her fans.
Fans were able to watch the two producers embark on the first leg of the tour in Asheville and Nashville in the first episode, while the second episode showed Giobbi and Tennis popping up in an abandoned aircraft at Tucson, AZ’s Pima Air & Space Museum, cooking meals in the desert, creating magic in Escape Studios in Pioneertown, CA, igniting fire beats in Joshua Tree, and more.
LP GIOBBI
In the final episode, the road tripping duo vibe out on Italian accents and lead a crowd down the streets of Santa Barbara, CA while playing a mobile DJ cart before returning to Giobbi’s college roots in Berkeley to perform at Amoeba Music, conjuring perfect creative symmetry at Henry Miller Library in Big Sur, meeting up with DJ Chloé Caillet in Sun Valley, ID, and parking the Airstream tour at Club Superstition in Austin, TX.
“There’s nothing like watching people dancing and smiling while you play,” Giobbi notes. “Sometimes I daydream of the days of rock n’ roll and not having to do Instagram…what a dream. I used to think it was a selfish endeavor to pursue being an artist, but it was my mom that said her happiest memories with my dad are going to Grateful Dead shows and that fueled them to push through everything and anything. So this job was an important one and I feel very honored to be a part of it.”
To celebrate the fully released docuseries, LP Giobbi has announced her return to the open road with a set of Airstream tour dates. This year’s tour will see the producer perform at scenic stages across the Northwest, including Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and more. Charli XCX has been an “it” pop girlie for a while now and has the classic hits to back it up. But ever so often, she needs to remind those trolls and overall nasty people who diminish her accomplishments. On her forthcoming album, Brat, she’s aiming to do just that. The track “Von Dutch” is all about that.
But she wasn’t done dragging the jealous folks. So she’s back with Addison Rae and frequent producing partner A.G. Cook with a sweat-inducing remix to continue the conversation. The remix (officially titled “The von dutch remix with addison rae and a.g. cook”) is a fuzz frenzy of Charli’s best electronic and pop sensibilities riddled with nostalgic references.
The duo valley subtle jabs at their hates on the track’s opening verse. “I’m just living that life / Von Dutch, cult classic, but I still pop / Every time my track drops, you’re jealous / I’m just living that life,” sings Charli as Addison layers on, “While you’re sittin’ in your dad’s basement / Bet you’re disappointed that I’m shinin’ / I’m just living that life.”
Brat is sure to follow this confident thread of sass.

After lusting after the Maldives for over a decade — and feeling like I was seemingly the only travel journalist who hadn’t visited the ultra-luxe beach destination — I finally experienced what the hype was all about while staying at one of the newest properties in the region. I spent a few blissful days frolicking around on the serene heart-shaped Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) at Avani+ Fares Maldives, located on the western edge of the atoll and encircled by a reef that’s home to vibrant aquatic creatures. Avani+ is situated on one of only 61 islands in the marine-protected waters of the reserve and boasts white sand and turquoise waters. It’s the newest property of the Minor Hotels groups, opened in May 2023, and still feels brand-freaking-new.
The Island of Fares is the place to stay in the Maldives to unwind in a modern fun-centric atmosphere that attracts a young crowd of international travelers. Situated on what was once a coconut plantation, the island is full of shady groves that are fully protected by sustainable building regulations — meaning trees cannot be cut down when building new properties. It also boasts the largest collection of rum in the Maldives.

At the laid-back 5-star tropical island you’re quite literally encouraged to leave your shoes behind. Beyond enjoying the beauty of white beaches, there are daily DJ sets, moonlit dance parties on the beach, and otherworldly excursions around the aquamarine Indian Ocean. Throughout 2024 there will be coveted events including an upcoming music festival, a ballet retreat, and an adults-only month.
Speaking specifically on the hotel, Avani+ Fares Maldives is simply the very picture of paradise. Of course… that can probably be said for most Maldivian resorts with overwater bungalows. While many properties in the Maldives offer astronomical all-inclusive room and board packages, Avani+ can be booked on an a la carte basis, which helps reduce expenses and makes the luxurious property more accessible than other nearby resorts. While packages are available, by creating a bespoke itinerary you can ensure you’re only paying for what you want to experience while on the atoll from meals, cocktails, and experiences.
IN HOUSE FOOD + DRINK

Like most private island resorts guests are limited to drinking and dining on-site. Not to fret, Avani+ has many establishments offering a variety of cuisines. Each restaurant utilizes locally sourced, sustainable, organic produce. Breakfast is a buffet at the Ocean Terrace which is also open for dinner and has an abundance of dishes on offer including local and international items. Lunch is at Skipjack, the poolside bar that offers poke bowls ($28-$34) and cocktails such as the Miami Vice which is a pina colada with strawberries ($22).
Out of all of the restaurants, I enjoyed the offering at Charcoal the most — if you’re vegan like me, don’t skip the charcoal grilled leeks ($15) and coconut sorbet ($8). Both are special and both feel light for a day spent on the beach and in the water.
Drinks, such as spiked coconuts, can be enjoyed at all establishments. If you love rum, you’re in luck. Smuggler’s Shack has the largest collection of rum in The Maldives. If you gom, order my favorite drink, the Shark Tooth ($22) with cherry, lime, lemon, and white rum. Into bubbles? Don’t miss sipping on something fizzy with your toes in the sand at the Veuve Clicquot beach. The most innovative cocktails can be found at Tribe which is open a few nights a week and drinks are served in pits sunken into the sand as guest DJs set the mood.

If you don’t splurge for a room with a private plunge pool don’t worry — the massive infinity pool is fantastic and drinks are encouraged (served in plastic glassware for safety). If you’re feeling sporty, there’s an on-site gym with Technogym equipment, tennis, football, and badminton courts, complimentary yoga classes, and sound bowl healing.
Unwind at the AvaniSpa with a vinotherapy treatment ($160) of hot wax from a red wine candle to soothe your muscles after traveling quite far to reach this slice of paradise. Aroma, Thai, and Swedish massages are also available. Carve out some time before or after your treatment to enjoy the complimentary sauna and steam room.
My favorite amenity was Island Bazaar, the resort’s boutique. Resort shops are usually full of junk that has nothing to do with the destination, but that’s not the case at Avani+. Island Bazaar is the second outpost of the boutique which is locally owned and offers a collection of handcrafted Maldivian fashion, beauty, and decor items.

Avani+ feels intimate with a collection of only 176 beach-front villas and overwater villas. The rooms are full of comfortable amenities including Bluetooth sound systems, Nespresso machine, and glass water bottles featuring seawater that’s treated onsite to become potable — an eco touch that really impressed me.
I stayed in the entry-level Over Water Villa (no private plunge pool) which starts at $870/night including breakfast. The spacious villa was complete with a sitting area, a day bed, an indoor and outdoor waterfall shower, and a private outdoor soaking tub. My patio was equipped with two lounge chairs and a sitting area. It looks directly out over the Indian Ocean with its endless hues of blue and nearly constant aquatic life sightings. Without even getting into the lagoon I saw sharks, sea turtles, various rays, and countless fish species from my villa.
BEST THING TO DO WITHIN A 15-MINUTE WALK

Fares means “the land on the reef” in the Maldivian language, Dhivehi. The heart-shaped Baa atoll has 105 coral reefs. While I saw an abundance of marine life from land — what drew me to the Maldives was the chance to get in the water and see the tropical residents up close and personal. I borrowed a complimentary snorkel set and jumped straight into the water from my overwater villa to peruse the house reef.
I encountered many incredible creatures on the house-reef every time I got in the water including a rare guitarfish and a massive eel. I’d regularly see some of my favorite marine life creatures including spotted eagle rays, parrot fish, and black-tip sharks. The water was consistently crystal clear making it superb for visibility while snorkeling. As Baa Atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with many marine protected areas, it’s important to be conscientious and use reef-friendly SPF. (If you forgot to pack sun protection there are options from local brands in the Island Bazaar boutique.)
THE BEST THING TO DO/EAT/DRINK WITHIN AN HOUR’S DRIVE

Many of the Avani+ excursions take some 45 minutes to reach such as the Dolphin Quest and Turtle Quest. I partook in both experiences and had the magical experience of swimming with over a dozen critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles. It’s well worth the long journey to get there — the Avani+ boats are equipped with Bluetooth speakers and you can bring a few bottles of champagne to enhance the journey. Although we attempted unsuccessfully to find manta rays to snorkel with at Hanifaru Bay, we were greeted by a massive pod of spinner dolphins.
Wildlife activity can’t be predicted and regardless of your sightings, it’s fantastic to get out on the water and go by Maldives’ many blue holes.
BED GAME

Jet lag was defeating me until I laid down on the decadent bed in my overwater villa. Maybe it was the set of four plush pillows, the sound of the ocean lapping underneath me, or the faint starlight, but I finally got in a solid eight hours after a massive travel day, so the bed gets all the gold stars from me.
Due to the time change, I was waking up around 6 am most mornings, and watching the sunrise from bed made for the best start of the day.

SEXINESS FACTOR

Let me just stress how private the overwater villas are — no one can see into your villa unless they happen to swim by. This is unlikely, as the current around the villas is actually quite strong so folks tend to just swim outside of their villa or off the beach around the island. I took full advantage of this and enjoyed a few hours of letting the sunshine where it normally doesn’t daily by sunbathing in the nude.
Since the property allows kids, we had to knock one point off.

THE VIEWS & PICS SPOTS

Paradise is picturesque — full stop. You can’t take an ugly picture here but if I had to recommend a few spots they’d be the stretches of white sandy beaches, the overwater nets on the arrival jetty, the infinity pool, and the poolside cozy round beds—with a fresh coconut in hand.

BEST SEASON TO VISIT

Early March was an absolutely perfect time to visit — occupancy was low, the heat was bearable, and it was the tail end of the dry season. Dry weather in Baa Atoll lasts from January to April and then June to September. If you’re basing the timing of your visit around wildlife sightings, consider that the best time to swim with mantas at Hanifaru Bay is from late June and October and that May to December is the best time to try your luck at swimming with docile whale sharks.
IF I HAD TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ONE THING

I was a bit disappointed by the lack of cultural experiences available during my stay. When there’s higher occupancy there are fire shows and drumming sessions. Avani+ is formulating new cultural experiences including an on-site museum dedicated to Maldivian history and lore.
